I think part of what makes the older (50+) Naruto characters so interesting is that they're functionally from a very different time period than the main characters. I mean the Sannin, Danzō, Hiruzen, etc. Like Tsunade is literally Hashirama's granddaughter! He was still alive when she was young!

When you take into consideration how new the villages were when they were growing up, it really provides so much more insight into their actions and their thought processes. These are people who grew up when things were still new, still unstable, still full of the hesitation and trepidation of the promise of a better future. Of course they were willing to do anything they thought would help keep it. In their eyes it was still uncertain, and they wanted to hold onto anything that would stabilize it

Danzō is so weird to me. He never ever gets mad at someone for failure. He's just like somethings can't be helped. It's just so chill for a guy who is so horribly abusive to kids. And also just awful in general.

The only time he gets mad or punishes someone, namely Tenzō, is when a mission fails bc of a refusal to follow orders.

Can't do it bc of skills or just out matched? Fine it happens. Refused to do it? Horrible consequences to be had.

I think this strengthens my headcanon that Danzō set Sakumo up and pushed the smear campaign to be as bad as it was.

"You're afraid of me aren't you?" ~Danzou

I am, was on the tip of Shisui's tongue, but he didn't say it. Even after failing so spectacularly and ending up in Danzō's hands, he had thought himself capable of handling the situation, but he had been oh so wrong.

"You don't scare me," he said instead, doing his best to appear more angry than afraid, sure of himself despite his heart beating wildly in his chest and the anxiety rising in his stomach, "you're nothing more than a coward who hides behind his pawns because you're too scared to dirty your hands and face the consequences of your actions."

For a moment Shisui could have sworn he saw Danzō's lips twitch upwards in a smirk, but the expression was gone in the blink of an eye, even though a lingering sort of amusement clang to his captor's face. He didn't seem angry at Shisui's words, not even slightly fazed as he walked closer to him, towering over the Uchiha's kneeling form.

"You're still so young, Shisui-kun," Danzō's tone sounded sweet and patronizing, almost like the mockery of a grandfather. It made Shisui clench his teeth, fighting down the urge to take a step back. Not that he could, chained to the floor as he was, but he still felt like he wanted to run as far and as fast as he could.

A hand, old and gnarled, grabbed his chin, index finger gently pressing up from under it as Danzō took his time turning his face one way or the other, observing him in silence for long seconds while Shisui tried to fight his hold.

"You see, Shisui-kun, sometimes life is like a game of chess," the smirk returned, but this time it stuck around, pulling at Danzō's lips like it belonged there, even though Shisui had never before seen the man with nothing but a permanent scowl on his face that was able to put even Fugaku's to shame, "and a King always sends its pawns first."

The pull was sudden and rough, it made the chains around Shisui's arms rattle and bite into his skin as Danzō forced him even closer, their noses almost touching. His breath was foul, but Shisui had no way to get away from him, even though he tried, panic spiking up.

Danzō's golden eye was hard yet somehow amused, the man feeling empowered by Shisui's reaction giving away how he was truly feeling, just like a dog who was all bark and no bite.

"You're an interesting person, Uchiha Shisui," he said, relishing in the way Shisui's body tensed up, Adam's apple bobbing with a silent, nervous gulp. "And I like interesting people."

Danzō's hand slid down from Shisui's chin to his throat, thumb pressing just slightly against his pulse to savor the wild beat as he let his head tilt forward, dry lips grazing his ear, "I think I'll keep you, Uchiha Shisui," he whispered, not able to see Shisui's face pale but content with just listening to his galloping heartbeat.

"After all, there are plenty of ways to make you useful to me."

“Iruka-sensei,” he greets with a charming eye-smile. To Danzō he says, with neither emotion nor inflection, “Shimura.”

Danzō’s hands tense atop his cane. “Hatake,” he replies, clearly displeased with the intrusion. “May I help you?”

Kakashi eyes him up in silence. His arm tightens around Iruka’s shoulder. Iruka tries his best to ignore how easily he leans into Kakashi’s side in response, but there’s nothing he can do about the embarrassed flush heating his face. “Nope!” Kakashi says brightly after he stretches his silence for just a beat too long.

My Canon-Compliant Headcanons 'Bout Nohara Rin:

Her Number 1 most Favourite colour is black. She even befriended Uchiha Obito & Yūhi Kurenai initially coz of it. Rin saw their hair on the 1st day of school then instantly went to go tell them "Your hair is pretty!!" as soon as break-time started. Rin likes pouring black ink onto white sheets of paper & shift the paper around, watching the ink spread as she tilts the paper. Her 2nd Fave colour is shades of violet, but she's allergic to all flowers in the genus Viola and doesn't particularly care 'bout flowers nor flower language at all (Rin doesn't dislike them, though; she's fully neutral).

Rin fidgets with her hands a lot; whenever she's not doing so, her feet move instead. It's basically impossible for Rin to stay still unless she's unconscious or under the influence of a genjutsu. Even when asleep, Rin keeps moving the entire time; sometimes she falls off her bed as a result. The red headband Rin wears on her wrist is a 5th birthday gift from her mum since her fingers messing with it helps Rin concentrate when someone is talking to her.

She feels an ache behind her eyes each time Rin makes eye contact with someone, so she tends to look at people's noses or foreheads when trying to indicate that Rin is paying attention to someone who is speaking to her and she openly stares all over her surroundings if she thinks the person won't get angry at the incorrectly assumed lack of listening. Rin's eyes also are sensitive to light, so she carries sunglasses with her everywhere in a pocket or in her weapons pouch. Regardless of whether indoors or outside, she puts them on to give her eyes a break from the pain brightness causes to them.

Rin loves strawberries and sea turtles!! She ever since infancy is always eager to eat the former and ever since age 3 adores any strawberry or turtle themed item she can find. Her biological parents' 4th birthday gift to her is a strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) in a pot suspended from the ceiling of her bedroom. Rin's dad works as a gardener, so he helps her take good care of it. Her bio fullsister Nohara Ren's 4th birthday gift to her is a shuriken in the shape of a sea turtle (Chelonioidea).

Ren & Rin are very different from each other. Where the former is good at interacting with other people, the latter is fully socially incompetent. Where Ren easily wakes up early & enjoys sunlight, Rin can sleep through anything & anywhere and likes moonlight. Where the former can't use medical ninjutsu & is skilled at using genjutsu, the latter is skilled at using medical ninjutsu & can't use genjutsu. Where Ren can read a 205-paged textbook in 5 minutes and remember & understand everything she'd been reading, Rin needs to take a lot of breaks for the same book & give herself practice tests then revise before she manages to learn anything. The former is energetic, the latter is mostly quiet. Ren has zero issues with her eyes and can sit still without moving at all, Rin (as mentioned earlier) struggles a lot. However, despite all of these differences, the 2 sisters love each other and Rin (who is 5 years younger than her big sis) respects Ren a lot.

Until tragedy strikes. Ren graduated at 6 years old then was recruited into Root by Shimura Danzō (who secretly had the jōnin whose apprentice she was assassinated). The mental strain eventually caused 12 years old Ren to murder her loving bio parents and spare Rin (who witnessed the whole thing) solely coz her sisterly love had turned twisted. Ren knocked Rin out with 涅槃精舎の術/Nehan Shōja no Jutsu/Nirvana Temple Technique then snuck out of Konohagakure and lived the rest of her life as a nukenin, travelling all over the Human World 'til she died from microscopic polyangiitis at age 17. Rin started learning medical ninjutsu and how to identify & resist & break genjutsu due to her trauma from Ren's betrayal & their caring, civilian parents' death.

Rin usually is genuinely nice, but her social incompetence & her bluntness often get Rin into trouble. She dislikes arguments & so tries to be the peacekeeper between Obito and Hatake Kakashi, but often fails at it since Rin lacks diplomacy skills. She respects Namikaze Minato a lot for having the same background as her – a kid with civilian parents and no kekkei genkai – yet growing extremely skilled thus Rin develops a fascination for fūinjutsu.

Rin's most Fave word is friendship (in Japanese yūai which is written as 友愛 in kanji). She's a lonely person who holds tight to the very few friends (her parents, Ren, Kurenai, Obito, Kakashi, Minato, and Uzumaki Kushina) she manages to gain; although Rin doesn't always forgive them if they wrong her in some way, she does always give them a second chance and never holds grudges. It's not that Rin is unable to hold a grudge or incapable of spite; she feels those emotions, but they fade away as soon as Rin sees her loved ones since she's grateful that her family interacts with her at all. She's bad at setting boundaries and a hypocrite whose morality vanishes when her friends are the ones who do something she'd never tolerate from anyone else (not even if the person has always been sincerely nice to her). If she had lived past her suicide at 14 years old, Rin coulda grown out of these traits with some help from her family and a competent therapist. She also woulda bit by bit befriended Isobu the Sanbi (as Rin at the time of her canon death is the Three-Tails' jinchūriki).

Rin likes following her usual routine and dislikes it being interrupted (she's not a spontaneous person). She hates the taste of tsukudani and feels conflicted 'bout kids, in her teens wanting to someday become a bio or legally adoptive mum yet her whole time as a ninja up to that point always being utterly terrible at D-rank missions which involve babysitting (Obito is good at those and Kakashi relies on books to be at least semi-competent at them, her teammates' success lowering Rin's self-confidence since she sometimes compares herself to them, Kurenai, & Ren).

Ren & Rin's parents are civilians who were born in the Village Hidden in the Leaves, their respective bio parents having been civilians who were born there too to a few of the first civilians to join Konohagakure after the Village Hidden in the Leaves was founded. As stated above, the cisgender girls' dad Nohara Daisuke works as a gardener; he also grows as much of the family's food as he can. The girls' mum Nohara née Terada Ran is a housewife who (after a talk with her husband to figure out what they'll do) upon finding out she was 3 months pregnant with their 1st kid quit her job as a waiter in favour of focusing on raising the couple's children, Daisuke raising their daughters whenever he wasn't busy with work or his garden. Ran has the same violet filled-in square tattoo on each facial cheek her daughters have, getting the 2 tattoos on her 5th birthday same as her children do. The tattoos are a tradition started by Ran's bio mum Terada née Ōkan Ruki who at age 4 got them for herself; upon 3-year-old Ran wanting them, she told her only kid: "If you still want them next year, you can have them." Ren & Rin got the same choice too.

Her hobby is collecting sea shells, coz she ever since age 3 loves how pretty they are.

this is some of my favorite itachi characterization i've ever written. yes this IS a fundamental difference between itachi and hinataverse!hinata (itachi tends to consider a lot of things to be hard constraints that hinata puts in her cost function); simultaneously, "immutable constraint on the solution space" is a really fucking funny and itachi-esque way to describe shimura danzō imo

Thank you for the incredible amount of votes! It was fun seeing how results varied from region to region. I was shocked to see Minato at the top for all regions, and the fact that Sakura is so beloved by many people around the world made me proud as a writer. To tell you the truth, I was actually rooting for Kurama. I was planning on drawing only the top 20 characters, but I really wanted to add Kurama, who was close at 22nd... So I ended up including him and Guy, who was in 21st place! Sorry for completely ignoring the original plan to have the top 20 characters for the 20th anniversary because of my personal attachment. Right now I'm working on the short manga for Minato who placed 1st. While trying to make a story that would match the expectations of his fans, I ended up with more pages than I had originally anticipated. Please look forward to the secret story behind Minato's jutsu! I want to thank you all very much again for voting!

There is a private ship on discord between a younger version of Kagami and Hidan... And it's as toxic as one might imagine, but I am still absolutely in love with it.

And the number five that is ATM really digging itself into my heart is the rather fresh, still developing ship between Sakura and Kagami in the arranged marriage au with @hana-akari .

And now that's a tough question.. because by extension, both are at fault for the massacre of the Uchiha.. Danzō more actively so, but Hiruzen just sat at the sideline and watched him do it. (Can't convince me that he didn't know, he did know.. he just didn't want to speak out against a friend.. there is a lot more HC I got about the three of them, which I would gladly elaborate on if you like to hear it). It would be a tough decision... But knowing what he did to Shisui... Kagami would then rather have slept with Hiruzen.

Honestly really difficult to decide where to place things. For criteria, I decided to go with which villains I think fill their role well instead of 'favorites' as that would be a fairly different list. (I.e., Orochimaru is one of my favorite villains but I think is not done well, etc.) On that note though, placements are pretty wishy-washy.

Shisui Uchiha’s Mangekyō Sharingan (TW: suicide, death, body horror)

Alright I’m back. Had a bit of a slum there lol, but we’re rolling forward.

Warning: Spoilers!

So Shisui awakened his Mangekyō after he witnessed his friend die in a mission. With both of his Mangekyō he had the ability to wield Kotoamatsukami, a genjutsu that allows one to manipulate a target’s thoughts without them being aware of what is happening. After awakening the Mangekyō in both his eyes, Shisui was also able to use the Susanoo.

After Shisui’s right Mangekyō was stolen by Danzō Shimura, he entrusted his other eye to his best friend, Itachi Uchiha, for safeguarding (After which, he killed himself by intentionally fell off a cliff). Itachi later transplanted Shisui’s eye into a crow that he planned to use to re-alley Sasuke with the Hidden Leaf Village. After he was reincarnated, Itachi used the power of the eye on himself to release himself from Kabuto Yakushi’s control.

Today I woke up thinking of a Kingdom AU of some kind with king Fugaku basically selling Shisui's freedom to the nearby enemy kingdom with Danzō as its king as a way to form an alliance through marriage

If Team 7 were DigiDestineds (Part 12):

(Got legally adopted in his 20s by Senju Tsunade) Senju Yamato's Crests would be Sincerity (Virtue) and Pride (Sin). His digivice is a lime green D-Ark/D-Power (which lacks the card slot and) which has a forest green rim (around the screen) & matching buttons & a likewise strap with the clip for attaching the digivice to things being lime green. The digivice's dark grey square screen has 1 of Yamato's Crests appear on it in lime green whenever he connects with his Digimon partner emotionally in ways that link to either of the 2 Crests. He has a

Popomon who hatched from a DigiTama/DigiEgg and got nicknamed Hana by him (Yamato originally thought 'bout not giving Hana a nickname; but quickly realised that, in trying to distance himself from this infant, he's behaving like Shimura Danzō).

The 2nd ever time when Yamato & Hana manage to emotionally connect with each other either through Sincerity or through Pride, Hana digivolves into a

Tanemon. The 3rd time, he digivolves into an

Alraumon then

Shurimon followed by

Toropiamon or into

Woodmon followed by

Jyureimon/Cherrymon.

When his partnership/platonic friendship with Hana reaches its peak for the 1st time whilst Hana is in his Alraumon form, Yamato & his Digimon partner matrix digivolve into

BloomLordmon.

Yamato tries to keep his partnership with Hana professional, but they end up platonically loving each other any way and he realises his childhood trauma still affects him.
