AI Costs Are Accelerating — Here’s How to Keep Them Under Control

Cloud usage continues to soar, as do its associated costs — particularly, of late, those driven by AI. Gartner analysts predict worldwide end-user spending on public cloud services will swell to $723.4 billion in 2025, up from just under $600 billion in 2024. And 70% of executives surveyed in an IBM report cited generative AI as a critical driver of this increase.

At the same time, China’s DeepSeek made waves when it claimed it took just two months and $6 million to train its AI model. There’s some doubt whether those figures tell the whole story, but if Microsoft and Nvidia’s still-jolted share prices are any indication, the announcement woke the Western world up to the need for cost-efficient AI systems.

To date, companies have been able to treat mounting AI costs as R&D write-offs. But AI costs — especially those associated with successful products and features — will eventually hit companies’ cost of goods sold (COGS) and, consequently, their gross margins. AI innovations were always destined to face the cold scrutiny of business sense; DeepSeek’s bombshell announcement just shortened that timeline.

Just like they do with the rest of the public cloud, companies will need to manage their AI costs, including both training and consumption costs. They’ll need to connect AI spending with business outcomes, optimize AI infrastructure costs, refine pricing and packaging strategies, and maximize the return on their AI investments.

How can they do it? With cloud unit economics (CUE).

What is cloud unit economics (CUE)?

CUE comprises the measurement and maximization of cloud-driven profit. Its fundamental mechanism is connecting cloud cost data with customer demand and revenue data, revealing the most and least profitable dimensions of a business and thus showing companies how and where to optimize. CUE applies across all sources of cloud spending, including AI costs.

The foundation of CUE is cost allocation — organizing cloud costs according to who and/or what drives them. Common allocation dimensions include cost per customer, cost per engineering team, cost per product, cost per feature, and cost per microservice. Companies using a modern cost management platform often allocate costs in a framework that mirrors their business structure (their engineering hierarchy, platform infrastructure, etc.).

Then, the heart of CUE is the unit cost metric, which compares cost data with demand data to show a company their all-in cost to serve. For example, a B2B marketing company might want to calculate its “cost per 1,000 messages” sent via its platform. To do this, it would have to track its cloud costs and the number of messages sent, feed that data into a single system, and instruct that system to divide its cloud costs by its messages and graph the result in a dashboard.

Since the company started with cost allocation, it could then view its cost per 1,000 messages by customer, product, feature, team, microservice, or whatever other view it deemed reflective of its business structure.

On the afternoon of April 14th, a hacker using a UK IP address exploited an out-of-date software package on one of 4chan's servers, via a bogus PDF upload. With this entry point, they were eventually able to gain access to one of 4chan's servers, including database access and access to our own administrative dashboard. The hacker spent several hours exfiltrating database tables and much of 4chan's source code. When they had finished downloading what they wanted, they began to vandalize 4chan at which point moderators became aware and 4chan's servers were halted, preventing further access.

Over the following days, 4chan's development team surveyed the damage, which to be frank, was catastrophic. While not all of our servers were breached, the most important one was, and it was due to simply not updating old operating systems and code in a timely fashion. Ultimately this problem was caused by having insufficient skilled man-hours available to update our code and infrastructure, and being starved of money for years by advertisers, payment providers, and service providers who had succumbed to external pressure campaigns.

We had begun a process of speccing new servers in late 2023. As many have suspected, until that time 4chan had been running on a set of servers purchased second-hand by moot a few weeks before his final Q&A, as prior to then we simply were not in a financial position to consider such a large purchase. Advertisers and payment providers willing to work with 4chan are rare, and are quickly pressured by activists into cancelling their services. Putting together the money for new equipment took nearly a decade.

In April of 2024 we had agreed on specs and began looking for possible suppliers. Money is always tight for us, and few companies were willing to sell us servers, so actually buying the hardware wasn’t a trivial problem. We managed to finalize a purchase in June, and had the new servers racked and online in July. Over the next few months we slowly moved functionality onto the new servers, but we had still been relying on the old servers for key functions. Everything about this process took much longer than intended, which is a recurring theme in this debacle. The free time that 4chan's development team had available to dedicate to 4chan was insufficient to update our software and infrastructure fast enough, and our luck ran out.

However, we have not been idle during our nearly two weeks of downtime. The server that was breached has been replaced, with the operating system and code updated to the latest versions. PDF uploads have been temporarily disabled on those boards that supported them, but they will be back in the near future. One slow but much beloved board, /f/ - Flash, will not be returning however, as there is no realistic way to prevent similar exploits using .swf files. We are bringing on additional volunteer developers to help keep up with the workload, and our team of volunteer janitors & moderators remains united despite the grievous violations some have suffered to their personal privacy.

4chan is back. No other website can replace it, or this community. No matter how hard it is, we are not giving up.

Finale thoughts!

Interesting to find out that Hillerska has had multiple warnings over several years and still didn't pull their heads in. Clearly they thought they were invincible.

Vincent and Nils stepping up to the plate when they see August's genuine distress, the way Vincent is stroking his arm. There's real friendship and love to be found, but you only see it when you're honest. Similarly, their reactions when they find out that August is backup. August receiving the posioned chalice. What else can he do now, though? He's lost Arnas, or at least part of it. He has to do the military service; he's in the position Wille has been in.

Haha, the housemaster having a drink with the boys. What else is he going to do?

Loved the scene with Felice dragging Wille to the party. Her facial expressions, she's so cute. Wille negotiating with Malin shows a level of maturity, but the male bodyguard is SO not impressed as he follows them to the palace, LOL.

LOVE that Simon brought Rosh and Ayub to the white party. And Ayub reassuring Rosh, after Stella shows herself for who she is. She's chosen the Hillerska way, all the way.

The scene between Wille and August in the clubroom. He didn't know it, but that was the closure he needed. THat they both needed. They've made peace, they can even develop a familial relationship again into the future, but right now this is as close to peace as they can have at this stage.

Nils, you giant dork. And also... They're shocked he didn't say anything earlier,  but would things have been different if he had?

No Royal house, no Prince, no socialist, no drama. No before. No later. Only now. As the previous song said, back to basics. Back to the pure connection they have with each other.

Simon's Song! Did Felice initiate that, do we think? A few of the choir were smiling at Simon. Nice to see they all (or most of them) wanted that and not the musty old version.

Oh, Kristina, that really is too little too late, but I'm glad you came through in the end.

The little token the Queen and Duke put around August's neck is a frog prince. The symbolism would be a sledgehammer if the direction or script drew attention to that, but they don't.

In the car, Wille beginning to feel the panic attack happening, the constriction of the collar around his neck, and realising what that means. This is an unhealthy system and if he stays in it, this will be his life. The constriction, the desperation, literally struggling to breathe. Echoing Simon's words to him, "I've seen how it makes you feel". Being calm because he's no longer coming from a place of despair, a place where he has no control. And Kristina knows it. It was important for Wille to tell his parents he loves them. He's coming to terms and making peace with everyone.

That closing scene, oh my god. The montage was cheesy as fuck and I am here for it. The dialogue and the execution were not cheesy. They established the important things. Wille is doing this for his sake, not for Simon's. For the first time in his life he is making an informed, calm, active choice.

Simon's FACE. OMG. The shock, barely daring to believe it, but knowing when Wille says 'For my own sake' that this is it. It's real. And then! The tears, the gasping, the incredulous joy! Omar is a natural who stepped it up even more this season, and I do hope he continues to take on acting roles because he is amazing.

Wille's FACE. The joy but more importantly the PEACE.  His entire being, his posture, his aura changes and he radiates rightness. Edvin is incredible.

Also? They both look so, SO beautiful in this episode. This closing sequence, but really the entire episode.
