Neben coolen Mitrednern aus der Branche wurde darüber diskutiert, was das Dortmunder Nachtleben im Bereich Rock und Metal macht und warum Konzerte meist nur im Rest des Ruhrpotts stattfinden, waren wir doch jahrelang eine Hochburg der Rockkultur.

Neben mir auf der Bühne gab es Anja Rinne (Artworx), Joe (Booker, Junkyard), Waldemar Sorychta (Produzent, Grip Inc.) und Axel Hermann (Illustrator). Moderiert von Didi Stahlschmidt vom Kulturbüro.

Man kann nur hoffen, dass die Diskussion etwas gebracht hat und auch die Politik etwas aufrütteln konnte. Zumindest war die Beteiligung so groß wie noch nie und es gab einleitend ein kleines Set der Band SmackBallz, die zum ersten Mal nach 10 Jahren wieder auf der Bühne stand.

Es ist von einigen Leuten geplant, einen Verein zu gründen, um endlich nicht mehr nur alleine an der Front zu kämpfen. Hoffe, dass es klappt und natürlich kann sich jeder auch bei mir melden, der gerne aktiv werden will.

KEVIN KLINE (Tulio) has been honored for his work on the stage and the screen. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the comedy "A Fish Called Wanda." More recently, he was recognized with the IFP’s Gotham Award for "The Ice Storm," and a Golden Globe nomination for "In & Out." He had previously received Golden Globe nominations for his performances in "Dave," "Soapdish" and "Sophie’s Choice."

Kline is a two-time Tony Award winner for his work on Broadway in "The Pirates of Penzance" and Hal Prince’s production of "On the Twentieth Century." He also garnered Drama Desk Awards for both productions.

A graduate of the Juilliard School of Drama, Kline is a founding member of John Houseman’s The Acting Company, with which he made his Broadway debut in Chekov’s "The Three Sisters." His additional theatre credits include "Arms and the Man" and "Loose Ends," both at Circle in the Square; the title role in Chekov’s "Ivanov" at the Lincoln Center Theatre; the title role in the 1986 and 1990 productions of "Hamlet" at New York’s Public Theatre, the latter of which he also directed, both for the stage and again for PBS’ Great Performances series; and the New York Shakespeare Festival presentations of "Richard III," "Henry V," "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Measure For Measure."

Kline made an auspicious feature film debut in Alan Pakula’s "Sophie’s Choice," opposite Meryl Streep. He then joined the ensemble cast of "The Big Chill," which began his long association with writer/director Lawrence Kasdan. They have since collaborated on "Silverado," "I Love You to Death," "Grand Canyon" and "French Kiss." Kline’s other film credits include "A Midsummer Night’s Dream," "Wild Wild West," "Fierce Creatures," the voice of Captain Phoebus in the animated musical "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "Looking for Richard," "Princess Caraboo," "Chaplin," "Cry Freedom" and the screen version of "The Pirates of Penzance."

KENNETH BRANAGH (Miguel) is an award-winning actor, director, writer and producer. He adapted, directed and starred in 1989’s "Henry V," which brought him dual Academy Award nominations for Best Actor and Best Director and for which he won BAFTA and National Board of Review Awards for Best Director. He was more recently Oscar-nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for the 1996 release "Hamlet," which he also starred in and directed. Branagh also received a SAG Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Othello," and produced, adapted, directed and starred in "Much Ado About Nothing," which earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Feature. His upcoming film credits include a musical version of Shakespeare’s "Love’s Labour’s Lost," which he adapted, directed and stars in.

In addition, Branagh directed and starred in "Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein," which he also produced, "Peter’s Friends" and "Dead Again." His other credits as an actor include "Alien Love Triangle," "Wild Wild West," Robert Altman’s "The Gingerbread Man," Woody Allen’s "Celebrity," "The Theory of Flight," "Swing Kids," "A Month in the Country" and "High Season." He also narrated the Oscar-winning documentary "Anne Frank Remembered," and, in 1993, received an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short for "Swan Song." That same year, he was honored with the British Academy’s Michael Balcon Award for Outstanding Contribution to Cinema.

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Branagh studied at England’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, and made his professional stage debut in "Another Country." Joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, he was seen in such plays as "Love’s Labour’s Lost," "Hamlet" and "Henry V" before leaving to form his own successful theatre company. His other stage work includes sold-out productions of "Hamlet," "King Lear" and "A Midsummer Night’s Dream."

ROSIE PEREZ (Chel) received an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for her work opposite Jeff Bridges in Peter Weir’s "Fearless." She was discovered by Spike Lee, who cast her in "Do The Right Thing," and she subsequently starred in such films as Ron Shelton’s "White Men Can’t Jump," Jim Jarmusch’s "Night on Earth," Tony Bill’s "Untamed Heart," Andrew Bergman’s "It Could Happen to You," Alexandre Rockwell’s "Somebody to Love," Seth Zvi Rosenfeld’s "A Brother’s Kiss" and Nancy Savoca’s "The 24 Hour Woman," which she also co-produced. She will next be seen starring opposite John Leguizamo in Seth Zvi Rosenfeld’s "King of the Jungle."

Perez began her career as a choreographer for such artists as Bobby Brown, LL Cool J and Diana Ross. She went on to choreograph and direct the Fly Girls on Fox TV’s "In Living Color."

She made her first foray into producing with "Rosie Perez Presents Society’s Ride," which ran as three parts on HBO. She conceived and executive produced "Subway Stories," an anthology of short films by prominent and new directors, which also aired on HBO. Most recently, Perez entered into a unique deal with Artists Television Group (ATG) to develop, star in and executive produce a television comedy series.

ARMAND ASSANTE (Tzekel-Kan) has most recently been recognized for his work in a number of acclaimed network and cable projects. He won an Emmy Award and garnered Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for his portrayal of John Gotti in the HBO movie "Gotti." He also earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as Odysseus in the miniseries "The Odyssey," and both Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his work in the miniseries "Jack the Ripper." Most recently, Assante starred as the Confederate commander of the first submarine in TNT’s true-life Civil War drama "The Hunley."

On the big screen, Assante received a Golden Globe nomination for his work in Sidney Lumet’s "Q&A," and won a Special Jury Prize at the USA Film Festival for his performance in the title role of "Belizaire, The Cajun." Among his additional film credits are "Striptease," "Judge Dredd," "Trial by Jury," "The Mambo Kings," "Hoffa," "1492: Conquest for Paradise," "The Marrying Man," "I, the Jury," "Little Darlings," "Private Benjamin" and "Paradise Alley."

A native New Yorker, Assante graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He made his professional acting debut on the stage in "Why I Went Crazy," under the direction of Joshua Logan. His subsequent stage credits include the Broadway productions of "Boccaccio," "Comedians," "Romeo and Juliet" and "Kingdoms."

EDWARD JAMES OLMOS (The Chief) has received honors for his work in films and on television. He garnered both Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations and won an Independent Spirit Award for his portrayal of inspirational teacher Jaime Escalante in "Stand and Deliver." He more recently earned acclaim for his role in Gregory Nava’s biopic "Selena," in which he starred as the Tejano singer’s father. He had previously worked with Nava in the film "My Family/Mi Familia."

On the small screen, Olmos won a Golden Globe Award and earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the HBO drama "A Burning Season." He had earlier collected his first Golden Globe for his starring role in the series "Miami Vice." This season, Olmos appears in the recurring role of Judge Mendoza on the new series hit "The West Wing." He has also starred in such longform projects as "Bonanno: A Godfather’s Story," "The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three," "12 Angry Men," "Hollywood Confidential," "Dead Man’s Walk" and "Menendez: A Killing in Beverly Hills."

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Olmos first gained attention for his performance in the Broadway musical "Zoot Suit," for which he received a Tony Award nomination. He later recreated his role in the film adaptation. His film credits also include "Wolfen," "Blade Runner," and five films for director Robert M. Young: "The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez," "Saving Grace," "Triumph of the Spirit," "Talent for the Game" and "Caught."

In 1992, Olmos made his feature film directorial debut with "American Me," in which he also starred. He also executive produced the award-winning documentary "Lives in Hazard," which addressed gang prevention.

new directors / new films 2017: ‘beach rats’ q&a w/ eliza hittman, harris dickinson, madeline weinstein, nicole flyus, frank hakaj, and dave ivanov

here are some hightlights:

writer/director eliza hittman said her biggest visual inspiration was danny fitzgerald’s photography, who would take cultural portraits of young men he would meet at various gyms. her appreciation of capturing the images of these everyday men echoed in her decision in casting unknowns and non-actors (“ordinary people”). she also explored hyper-masculine and homoerotic images men would share on facebook. the angles of these selfies influenced her decision of where to put the camera.

hittman used her own experience with aol chat rooms and other anonymous online interactions as inspiration for the online video chats depicted in the film. this type of communication, according to hittman, is inherently filled with “erotic strangeness”: you’re sitting alone in your bedroom, at night, speaking to the unknown...

the title “beach rats” is based on the slang term identifying the type of working class brooklyn families who live near coney island. drug addiction, particularly meth, is a struggle for many living in these neighborhoods, which is exemplified in the film. 

all of the protagonist’s friends (including frank hakaj and dave ivanov) in the film were young people street casted in coney island on the beach or in basketball parks. both hakaj and ivanov admitted that they were just themsleves on film and pretty much only did what they would probably do in all the situations if they were to deal with them in reality. they wanted to “leave the acting with the actors.” nicole flyus was street casted on the boardwalk. they all did have to “audition” after being noticed on the streets, but they all already felt like they had the parts. 

harris dickinson is from london, and sent a casting video to los angeles during the film’s first casting session. 

most of the actresses auditioning for the lead actress role, according to hittman, were purposefully “upping their sexuality” and wearing excessive makeup in an attempt to relate more to the part, so madeline weinstein stood out instantly because she just came in as herself, which made her almost more alluring to hittman. weinstein’s grandmother was born in the neighborhood where the film was shot. 

dickinson and weinstein bonded and learned the neighborhood together before filming mostly by taking the subway and exploring the influx of people coming in and out.

when talking about the film’s frank and sometimes beautiful intimacy, dickinson agreed with the interviewer as he was personifying the camera, alluding that the camera was participating in a “three-way” with the actors during sex scenes because of how close it was to the actors. 

when filming those sex scenes, hittman had to remind herself on set that, as the director, she holds the power to clear the set and remove unnecessary crew members when that intimacy was even more essential to any given scene. 

hittman chose hélène louvart as the cinematographer because she specializes in capturing “youth.”

the fireworks motif used throughout the film was originally designed to represent the “stagnancy” in this neighborhood, a repetitive and cyclical experience these young people all seem to do no matter what every friday night: go see the fireworks. it also comes to represent a longing, a searching, since, in a way, the fireworks act as a restart until next week’s festivities.

In Gedenken an meinen Basser Markus Gertzen † 18.03.2024

Es ist kaum noch ertragbar. Erst Jörn von N8O und jetzt auch noch Markus, mit dem ich jahrelang bei der NDH-Band Scharfrichter gespielt habe. Ich erfuhr schon recht früh, dass er gesundheitliche Probleme hatte und wollte ihn eigentlich noch als DJ auf seiner Hochzeitsfeier bespaßen, als er mit Angela eine neue Liebe fand. Unvergessen sind etliche Auftritte auf seinem Geburtstag, wo wir oft in seinem Hobbykeller nächtigten und wild über das Leben diskutierten. Aber auch das Rocktoberfest in Rees bleibt im Schädel oder das THW-Fest, wo die Electric Callboys als Teenager in der ersten Reihe standen. Zuletzt haben wir sogar darüber nachgedacht, Scharfrichter-Songs zumindest nochmal für die Nachwelt aufzunehmen. Vielleicht wird das ja mit dem Original-Basser irgendwann noch passieren, bevor wir alle ins Gras beißen. Scheiße, dass die, die Leben wollen, sterben, und andere, die die Schnauze schon lange voll haben, zu diesem Leben verdammt werden. Euer sogenannter Gott ist ein perverser, sadistischer Wichser.

“the renegade blade” snippet: after the ability exam

it’s been a long time since i provided any actual content about “the renegade blade”, so here’s a small snippet of chapter five!!!

It has been dark for a long time now —six hours, Iara says— and there’s a chill in the air that has me feeling giddy. My clothes are still wet, and there’s a shiver that never seems to end running up and down my back. I have never in my life experienced the faintest feeling of cold before. It makes my skin crawl, but I welcome it. I don’t welcome the blisters in my feet that wearing my wet boots have provoked, though, nor the dark bruise on my right hip that makes me jump every time I put unwanted pressure on it.

              Only two other candidates make it to the meeting point before the time runs out. One is a boy with broad shoulders and long tangled blonde hair who arrives just some time after the sun has sunk behind the horizon. When he emerges from the forest line, Master Abelardo rummages inside the folds of his robe, and then runs his hand over the length of his cane and then, out of nowhere, there’s a steady fire dancing around his left hand. He examines the boy, who is panting and has an ugly-looking bruise covering the right side of his face, and before he has time to ask for it, the boy shows him the snake’s scale. Master Abelardo nods, shakes his hand once to extinguish the fire and takes the scale.

               The other candidate is a girl, and she comes sprinting out of the forest like a wild animal. I can see her properly because it has been some hours since the sun came out again and woke me up from the dreamless sleep I had fallen into sometime during the night on the hard ground. Her brown skin is flecked with blood, and what must have been a beautiful braid of raven hair is mostly a mess of knots and tangles. She falls on her knees before Master Abelardo and raises her hand without looking at him. Her breathing is a ragged thing. Master Abelardo takes the scale from her trembling hand and observes it silently. Then he nods and mutters the words that still got me light-headed: “Welcome to the Hunt”. The girl blinks once, twice, and then, with a throaty roar, she raises her other hand, with which she’s holding a curved knife I hadn’t noticed her holding before, and sinks it to the hilt in the hard ground.

               This wakes up the curly-haired boy, who had been the only one able to keep on sleeping under the unforgiving hot sunrays. He jolts and looks at his surroundings like a scared animal, and then relaxes when he remembers where he is.

               “The time is up,” says Master Abelardo, raising his cane and hitting the floor with it once.

               The girl, who is still kneeling before him, lets out a breathy whimper.

               “That was close,” whispers Iara.

               There’s a rustle coming from the forest, and then Soma and Sora Kurokawa are trudging towards us with easy and carefree steps. The only disruption to their perfect image is a shallow cut on Sora’s marble forehead, and a blood-stained bandage tied around Soma’s left thigh, which causes a wave of guilty pride to wash over me when I spot it.

               Master Abelardo turns towards us and we all scramble to our feet, except the girl who came last. She tries to stand up, but her knees give in under her and she falls on them again. Iara shifts and so does Samira Chaib, but before either of them can step forwards, Soma Kurokawa is kneeling next to the girl and throwing her arm over his shoulders.

               “I can walk,” she snaps.

               “Then walk,” he snaps back.

               So she walks, leaning on his shoulder and dragging her feet to where the rest of us are watching uncertainly. He leads her to Samira, who has stepped towards them with her arms open.

“I’m sorry,” I hear him say, as the girl grabs Samira’s arm with something akin to exasperation. “I was harder on you than I should have been.”

It surprises me to hear him say something like that, even though it shouldn’t because I know absolutely nothing about Soma Kurokawa.

The girl looks at him with hard amber eyes, and then she says, “I’m here, am I not?”

Soma looks taken aback for half a second, but then he recomposes himself, nods and turns around again. Sora’s looking at him with a raised eyebrow, but she doesn’t say anything to him when he leaves the girl safely tucked under Samira’s arm and goes back to where Sora and Master Abelardo are standing.

               “The Ability Exam is now over,” says Master Abelardo, and only then do I realize that he has been standing for twenty-four hours without sleep. “Out of the nineteen candidates that started the exam exactly twenty-four hours ago, only you seven completed it successfully.”

               He points at the middle-aged man with the twisted end of his cane, and says, “Please, say your name with pride, for you are now a member of the Hunt.”

“Daveed Dewnight,” says the man, voice deep and somehow tired.

               “Samira Chaib,” says Samira when Master Abelardo points at her. There’s a glint of recognition in his eyes as he nods at her. The veil covering her hair is as perfect and neat as it was before the exam started.

               The girl who arrived last is still mostly leaning over Samira, and she’s clutching her side with white knuckles, but her voice comes out strong and firm when she says, “Radha Laghari.” She reminds me of one of those wild striped animals with huge fangs that appeared on illustrations in books I found at the palace library about the fauna of the Kingdom of Garunayda, at the other side of the ocean.

               “Iara Mbayi,” says Iara beside me, and the glint of recognition is there on Master Abelardo’s eyes again.

               I don’t realize I’ve been searching for Sora’s gaze until her dark eyes meet mine. I hope I’m not just imagining the smile on her lips as I say my own name.

               “Ander Mirasierra,” says the curly haired boy, who can’t seem to keep still for more than three seconds. He pronounces his name with a kind of awe, as if he still can’t believe that he is standing right here.

               Finally, Master Abelardo points to the last of the candidates who managed to pass the Ability Exam, the tall blonde boy with a bruise on the right side of his face. “Vanka Ivanov,” he says, chin raised and shoulders squared.

               Master Abelardo looks at each of us once again, slowly and minutely, like Queen Fatimah examined the sorrowful fruits I brought her from the market before sinking her teeth in their tasteless flesh.

               “You should all stand tall and proud,” he says. “You are now part of an organization that dedicates their lives to ensure the safety of others. For two years, you will receive the training necessary to combat and annihilate the horrors that destroyed our beloved land so many years ago. You will suffer and you will learn, and then, you will inherit the will of Yaruma the Creator, who saved us all and laid the groundwork for what is now the Hunt.

               “I trust that you will work hard and continue to honor the labor of so many Hunters before you. Here, under the rays of the sun that the people of Marakahala can no longer see clearly, I welcome you all to the Hunt.”

               He raises his cane and hits the hard ground one, two, three times, and moves his right hand to the left side of his chest, just where the emblem of the Hunt, a red heart surrounded by an ivy, is emblazoned on the black rough fabric of his robe. Sora and Soma do the same.

               “In blood lies the truth,” they all say, at the same time.

               It’s a strange moment, almost eerie: the three of them looking regal and enormous, with their straight backs and their black clothes and their hands clutching their chests. It makes my heart beat faster, and before I realize it, I’m imitating them. Everyone around me does the same, and we repeat those last words too, in unison. Inside me, my blood boils like endless thunder. It’s like we are all the same breathing entity, with the same objectives and the same passion and the same beating heart. I don’t know where this feeling comes from, but I don’t want it to go away.

If a legacy is something valuable to be passed down, we should be well on our way to the ultimate gift.

When orbital construction commenced on the ISS Legacy X in 2019, it was the natural extension to these ideas. A safeguard. An archive. A collection that preserves and juxtaposes humankind’s achievements and the diversity of the natural world, and asks us to confront the complex relationship between the two.

Though valuable beyond measure, humankind’s true hope for the Legacy X remains that we need never use it.
