On October 28, 1993, the Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror IV" aired. The wrap-around segments were done in a parody of the "Night Gallery" anthology series with Bart in the position of Rod Serling. The three segments were "The Devil and Homer Simpson" (based on "The Devil and Daniel Webster"), "Terror at 5 1/2 Feet" (based on the Twilight Zone episode and movie segment "Terror at 20,000 Feet" with Bart taking the William Shatner/John Lithgow role), and "Bart Simpson's Dracula" (based on various vampire tales, in particular "Bram Stroker's Dacula", "Nosferatu" and "The Lost Boys".) This episode marked the last episode with Conan O'Brien as a writer and the first appearance of exchange student Uter. ("Tree House of Terror IV", The Simpsons, TV Event)

Movie #5 of 2025: Big Trouble in Little China

Benedict looks horrible, emaciated, tired and depressed. He looks as though he is being physically and sexually abused again.

It is a direct result of Scientology and their handler, this subhuman parasite and it's partners, Adam Ackland, David Birkin, the Bronfmans, Laurene Powell Jobs, and Yuri Milner, keeping him within a circle of abuse. Disney is in such bad shape...AND FAR TOO COMPROMISED...to be of much help. I would ask those who still care, and I know that it's a lot, to keep Ben in your prayers. Sophie Hunter may already have used Benedict to get herself off the hook, just like when she snitched out Weinstein, years ago.

The man has literal demons, breathing down his neck.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

Big Trouble in Little China is an odd duck that blends several different genres together. It may not be for everyone but it’s got a lot of personality and is certainly memorable. It’s got such a unique feel that those who like it are sure to call it a new favorite.

Trucker Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) is accompanying his friend Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) as he travels to the airport to meet his fiancé after years apart. After landing, Miao Yin (Suzee Pai) is immediately kidnapped by a Chinese street gang. When our heroes learn that she is to be wed to an ancient sorcerer named Lo Pan (James Hong), what choice do they have but to infiltrate his lair and rescue her?

As soon as you meet Jack Burton, you know this will be a different kind of movie. Kurt Russell’s performance, his dialogue and his swagger make this protagonist an instant icon. He sticks out even more once we're properly introduced to the story because he doesn’t belong. He’s a no-nonsense meat-and-potatoes kind of guy. What does he know about ancient prophecies, a trio of warriors armed with elemental powers, or magic? It’s like the movie was originally meant to have Wang Chi as its protagonist but Jack stumbled in at the last second and stole the spotlight - which is precisely the appeal. He’s so out of place that everything feels like a surprise. The fact that everyone but him (and the audience) are “in the know” means that sometimes, this movie is just plain weird. There was no buildup to that monster! Where did it come from? Where did it go? If this was “Grave Dangers in the Great Kingdom” with Dennis Dun and Suzee Pai as the main characters, you wouldn’t question it. With Jack? it’s wild stuff.

Everything I’ve told you about this film so far should be a detriment. Instead, it’s a strength because this movie is effortlessly cool. Big Trouble in Little China does its own thing and is having a great time. You get the sense that everyone on set probably didn't understand what this was all building towards but they all got along so well and had such a great time that it didn’t matter. The enthusiasm is infectious. Though best known for his horror and science-fiction films, director John Carpenter’s mark is all over this movie. It's unmistakably his, even if it stands out among everything else he's made.

All that said, I wish I liked this movie more than I did. While it is fun, sometimes it can feel aimless and unpolished. Maybe it has a few too many characters. Jack and Wang Chi are joined by lawyer Gracie Law (Kim Cattral), an old enemy of Lo Pan played by Victor Wong, Wang’s friend Eddie Lee (Donald Li) and Eddie's love interest Margo Litzenberger (Kate Burton). Then there’s this other girl the villains mistake Miao Yin for… but then it turns out she also fulfills the role Lo Pan wants her to in the prophecy… and it gets to be a lot of a lot. It’s clear Jack Burton is not the kind of character that could ever learn any sort of lesson or change. He’s exactly who he needs to be now, and forever. That’s why you like him. Everyone else, however, is in major need of story arcs or character development, particularly in a story like this one that is under constant threat of being overwhelmed by its special effects, creatures and wild developments.

I was hoping a second viewing of Big Trouble in Little China would make me fall in love with it. Looks as though this movie just isn’t my thing. That makes it sound like I don’t like it. I do like it. It’s just that everything I see on screen tells me I should fall head over heels in love and I'm not. A funny thing happened when I did view it, however. Someone else in the room did fall for it completely. Their instant enthusiasm makes me wholeheartedly recommend the picture. I hope it turns out to be your kind of thing. Even it isn’t, there are a lot of laughs, surprises, and memorable moments in Big Trouble in Little China. (April 7, 2022)

US interference in European elections largely began with the manipulation of Italy’s 1948 election by spreading propaganda, fabricating grassroots initiatives and funding their preferred candidates to ensure the electoral defeat of the political Left. The successful Italian election interference operation of 1948s became a “template” that would be replicated (Shimer, 2020). Towards the end of the Cold War, greater steps were taken to manipulate the politics of foreign nations by constructing “private” international non-governmental organisations (NGOs), which could conceal and legitimise actions by intelligence agencies. The label “non-governmental” organisations are very deceptive as they are almost completely funded by the government, often staffed by people connected to the government and intelligence agencies, and pursue the strategic objectives of the government. NED was created in 1983 as a private organisation, inaugurated by President Ronald Reagan and funded by the US Congress. Covert operations were instead made overt under the legitimacy of democracy and freedom. As Reagan argued in the inauguration ceremony of NED: “This program will not be hidden in shadows. It’ll stand proudly in the spotlight, and that’s where it belongs. We can and should be proud of our message of democracy”. Allen Weinstein, a co-founder of NED, acknowledged that “a lot of what we do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA” (Ignatius, 1991 ). [...]

By the late 1980s, NED began providing funding to anti-communist groups behind within the Soviet bloc. Washington Post reporter David Ignatius (1991) argued that NED has been the “sugar daddy of overt operations” in which Washington can support regime change under the auspices of “democracy promotion”, paramilitary operations under the guise of backing “freedom fighters”, and “what used to be called ‘propaganda’ and can now simply be called information”. [...]

James Woolsey (2005), a former CIA Director and former head of Freedom House, explained that Freedom House contributed to “help bring about a movement toward democracy in Ukraine” during the Orange Revolution. The Guardian described the Orange Revolution in Ukraine as “an American creation, a sophisticated and brilliantly conceived exercise in western branding and mass marketing”, which replicated the template of “winning other people’s elections” as had been done in Serbia and Georgia (Traynor, 2004). Another article by the Guardian referred to the Orange Revolution as a “postmodern coup d’état” and a “CIA-sponsored third world uprising of cold war days, adapted to post-Soviet conditions” (Steele, 2004). [...]

Gleb Pavlovsky, an advisor to Putin’s administration, argued that the Orange Revolution engineered in Ukraine “was a very useful catastrophe for Russia” as Moscow learned from the interference: “It very quickly became clear that they [the West] would try to export this to us and that we should prepare for this, and very quickly strengthen our political system” (Popescu & Wilson, 2009: 29). The same government-funded NGOs were involved in the Arab Spring, at which point in time US Senator John McCain tweeted on 5 December 2011 a direct threat to Moscow: “Dear Vlad, the Arab Spring is coming to a neighbourhood near you”. Carl Gershman (2016), the president of NED, similarly advocated that the US government should “summon the will” to carry out regime change in Russia. On its website, NED also lists how it spends millions of dollars annually in Russia to fund activities such as “engaging activists” and “fostering civic engagement” (Shane, 2018 ).

Every single day matters. Every single voice matters. Every single kindness matters. So whatever is going on in any given day, please remember to take a moment to be kind to yourself too. You are a very vital piece of this complex ecosystem we call Earth, and you make the world a more unique, diverse, and fantastical place. Things will get better because you are kind, and you are resilient. Things will get better because you will make them that way-- simply by being you. Reading these comics is an interesting experience, since they ran for a whole decade, and the writers changed throughout the years. Under Peter David, the slashy parts were mostly spones. But ever since Howard Weinstein's arrival, is all mckirk. Not a problem for me, since I like all the combinations...
