Natasha was a lot of things, a romantic was not one of them, nor was she really a big dater. She did what she wanted, when she wanted, and with whom she wanted. Then came this grumbling, scruffy, smartass (the ass itself not being too bad either) man that worked with Suit. 

Now, she was pacing the office, in a dress that was usually used for missions, and not recreation while he clacked away at his computers. She knew that things have been rough with Suit and Steve’s weirdness being prattled to him every day, or with the coding for his project running close to deadline, but if she could manage to sit out on one mission for this stupid dinner, his idea by the way, than he could walk away from the keyboard. 

“How’s that ‘bug’ of yours coming?” She called out, the air quotes thick in her voice while her hands firmly attached themselves to her hips. “Any changes?” 

Dawson’s eyes flickered towards her from the screen, he furrowed brow just as briefly un-scrunching. “Nope, not really, I’d have you come look, test out what I’ve been showing ya but-” 

“Classified I know.” She clipped out, rolling her eyes. “Above even my clearance.” 

There was silence now, as Dawson, with is tie pulled away from his neck, and the sleeves of his button-up (over jeans mind you, he could only compromise so much), bunched up at his elbows as his clicked and typed away with a feverish pace. Suddenly, his phone pinged in Nat’s clutch where they both had forgotten it was placed. Taking out with a quirk of an eyebrow, Nat looked to see a small banner with a rather embarrassing image of Suit attached to it. 

Q: No luck on my end, I told you to do this weeks ago, anyplace good is already booked for the year at this point.

Nat couldn’t help the small smile that spread across her face, nor could she resist the urge to take advantage of the fact that Dawson had also forgotten that she had his phone. 

“Hey, Daw?” She called out, making her way over to him. “Any progress?” 

“Not since the last time you asked, Nat.” He grumbled, his hands never stopping in their task. “May have to reschedule just to fix this.” 

She sat at the edge of his desk, keeping her back to the screen. “For your super secret project...when I could have been out kicking ass?” 

“I know, I’m sorry.” He said, and though it was in his usual irritated tone, she couldn’t help but feel that he meant it. But if she was going to have her night ruined, than so was he.” 

“That’s too bad.” She frowned, holding up the phone where he could see it. “Because I just did some calculations, and I’ve been able to determine that you’re full of shit.”

“What do you-” Dawson stopped when he finally toward her only to see that once again, his well-meaning friend had screwed him over. “Fucking Q.” 

“Come on, Smartypants, let’s go get some pizza and I’ll let you pirate any movie you want.” She said, taking his hand to guide him out of the chair. 

“Well that’s not really necessary, I can just find it on any streaming service.” He grumbled, trying to hide his embarrassment. 

“But that won’t nearly be as fun...” Nat said, throwing a wink at him for good measure. “Or Hot.” 

And without another word, Dawson followed the scarlet haired assassin out the door, forgetting his annoyance with his friend.

Welcome to the Pidjamas Party.

VLD season 8 broke my heart. I still adore the show, but healing from the end is going to take some time.

But heal I shall and part of that reason is a little ship we call Jidge, or Pidjamas. I ship Pidge and James Griffin.

Now, hear me out: I am a hardcore Plance shipper and will always be part of the Garden, but let me invite you to the party. The Pidjamas Party.

It’s a great ship, wholesome and intense. James is just the kind of man Pidge needs. He’s skilled, smart, respectful, and canonically works closely with the Holts after the end of VLD.

Back in August, in a discord server, several of us were discussing how we wished that Pidge would have some sort of love interest, and Jidge was born.

It’s an awesome party, there’s a ton of headcanons and ideas and we are all working on fics and art. I want more of you to know about Jidge. Come ask us. We’ll try to and convince you why it’s a great ship. Hit us up.

Basic Language Families

Vorin: Alethi, Veden, Herdazian, and more distantly Thaylen. Nathan is close to dead, but shares a root, and Karbranthian is basically a dialect. Other minor languages like Bav are in here.

Makabaki: Azish is king here, and most the languages around split off this. There are around thirty of these.

Dawnate: A varied language family with distant roots in the dawnchant. Shin, Parshendi, Horneater. They share grammar, but they diverged long enough ago that the vocabulary is very different.

Iri: Iriali, Reshi, Purelake dialects, Riran, and some surrounding languages.

Aimian: These two are lumped together, but are very different. Probably what you were looking for.

Related Tidbits

Alethi is a Semitic language mashup with some Mediterranean influence. [Source] Alethi has some Hebrew to it too. [Source]

I used Semitic language roots for the Dawnchant, which had a huge influence on Rosharan languages. While there are a few oddballs rules, and some linguistics that stand on their own, both major language groups on Roshar (the Azish family and the Vorin family) would probably sound very Arabic to you. For example, the Alethi Kh is a voiceless velar fricative. The Azish kk or q sound is a voiceless uvular, sometimes stop, sometimes an affricate. Sometimes a uvular ejective. [Source]

Shin is its own language, as is Iriali. [Source]

Eastern Rosharans using the word "wine" for a variety of types of alcohol, when only rare imports from Shinovar actually come from a grape, and naming animals things like "hound" when they only vaguely resemble a creature from Shinovar. (Or the term "silk", which is harvested from plants that float in the ocean. Or using the word "cremling" for any kind of small crustacean or insect, which is a linguistic expansion of the word over the centuries, when there used to be two distinct terms for them.) Vorin languages, in particular, lend themselves to this kind of simplification of terms. [Source]

Alethi vs. Thaylen

The inspiration for the shapes [of the Alethi women script] was an EKG readout. [Source]

The glyphpairs are more Chinese influenced. [Source]

Thaylen and Alethi are related kinda in the same way Korean hangul and Chinese chars are related. [Source]

Name Origin

I use Arabic in some of the creation of Alethi names, and Kaled (or Khaled) was the root I started playing with to come up with a new name for Kaladin, as I didn't like the one I'd used in 2002. I'd already designed Kalak after this, the Herald, and wanted a common name version of this. When I arrived at Kaladin, it sounded right to me--likely because of the similarity to Paladin, as others noted below.  [Source]

Suffix - like Kaladin is Kalak (Herald) + din which is a suffix, all of them mean things, like the old Hebrew names have "born of" or "comes through". Stick that on and drop the last letter. Dalinar, Elhokar, all of those have suffixes - nar, kar. [Source]

Polynesian names are the direct inspiration of Horneater names. [Source]

Shin naming system: "Female-daughter-Mother" + "Male-son-Father". [Source]

Nohadon with many names (Bajerden, Behardan, etc.): In this case it's more like how in some Asian countries, they would give honorific names to famous scholars or rulers after they pass away. [Source]

In Vorinism, the Heralds’ names often contain an “Elin”. The word means “Herald”. [Source]

Trivia

How to say Bridge 4 in Alethi: "vev gesheh". Vev = 4, Gesheh = bridge. [Source]

Calligraphy has also made it into Sanderson's novel. At the end of The Way of Kings, one of the characters paints a calligraphic symbol on the ground then burns it [Navani painting the “thath” glyph.]. "You paint it and set it on fire, and that is a prayer in this world," Sanderson said. "That is something I drew from the Chinese culture." [Source]

The Rosharans seem to pronounce j as y: This is a modern Vorin upper-class thing. But it might appear in some other countries as well…hard to say. Lower-class names like Jost and Jest would still be [dʒ]. Jezrien’s name in the Prelude would be pronounced with [dʒ], but by the modern day Jezerezeh is pronounced with y and Jezrien is also usually pronounced with y. [Source]
