Gina, the GENDER of it all!! First it's an all girl circus, and the men's bathroom is blocked off aka not being used in the scene where H is juggling. Meaning H uses the girls room (familiar to the sushi mv anyone?). Then it just shows how he's just one of the girls throughout the video. I love the hints he's always left over the years 🥺

I literally only JUST watched it 20 seconds ago and have only seen it once, so I didn't notice the bathroom!! I did notice that they all seemed to be women, though––but, as you say, he's just one of the girls. There's nothing sexual about the interactions. I did see someone say there was a trans circus performer, as well. I love the little nods to things that seem important to him

And I loved the video it was so charming and just delightful and happy.

The tightrope he walks. The hall of mirrors that changes his image, depending on your perspective. He’s a strong man, but are those weights legit? Yeah it’s a circus, but it’s fun, he’s having fun!

The metaphors!!! It’s such an incredible insight into another view he has of his fame. Basically the foil of MFASR’s message. So good.

The video has a weird energy to me because it somehow feels like he’s in the middle of the late night talking and as it was narrative, as you said, but also like he’s turning a new page. It was also made in the middle of this era but only came out now.

do you think maybe he’s looking for a way out of the circus or has given up and accepted it? The horse imagery feels really final from your analysis tho I believe the death card represents change?

So we discussed here somewhere (probably deleted) about the bird and the fish right? How in the first album the bird is looking down at him in water (the album cover) and then the second album is fish eye and the last album is upside down. Holy shit. The sky and the sea mirror each other and look the same upside down. The reason the ocean looks blue is because it reflects the sky.

Anyway, so I’m on instagram and I come across this quote from Ever After “a bird may love a fish, but where would they live” “then I shall have to make you wings” and it all fucking clicks. Guys, the bird and the fish—daylight and golden/adore you. In MFASR he is a fish. Did he try to become a fish and a bird only to still be Harry?

Ever After is a retelling of Cinderella, the fairytale where a prince meets a low status woman who is kind and falls in love and then searches for her throughout the kingdom… are you all seeing the parallels now?

Anywho, just made that connection, kinda curious it connects to Cinderella, but he is Prince Charming/God of Love. God it’s so mythic isn’t it?

So back to responding to your ask… yes he did have tarot, the moon and the fool card at Harryween.

Yeah there is a feeling of chaos in all the music videos, like fast moving, lots going on. I feel like the energy of the Daylight mv seems to me to be a continuation of LNT. If we were to put the videos from this album in chronological order (sorta) I’d think it’d be MFASR, LNT, Daylight, As it Was. At the end of LNT he’s falling and in the beginning of Daylight he’s coming down into the circus. It’s a circus in his dreams and reality, you could see Daylight as showing he’s gotten deeper into the circus.

The death card is a card of transformation yes. The ending of something, an era. To me it’s Pluto vibes, you lose so you gain. You sacrifice something now for a better thing later on. Very much those vibes. For him, he’s accepted he’s lost something, sacrificed something for this career he wants. At least that’s how I read it.

I didn’t really see the death card in the horse shot. But if so than we’ve had three tarot card instances— 0 the fool (beginning of a journey, naïveté), 13 Death (end of a journey), 18 the moon (emotions, dreams, illusions). Kinda interesting he put the fool and the moon together. It symbolizes to me what we’ve been discussing about him evolving.

it's not any kind of groundbreaking or secret analysis to say the Daylight MV might be about Harry's public persona being performative, about him playing the clown on a public stage for us, but it being the theme of 4 of his last 6 videos... I mean. it's kind of a lot! I want to say "we get it Harry! what we're seeing is a performance!" but of course a lot of people DON'T get it; I feel like it's the central Harry Styles dilemma, the conflict between his need for privacy and to keep some things just for himself and his yearning also to be seen for who he is and understood. But then again! Maybe it's not about telling us- maybe it's just that that is so overwhelmingly the reality and day to day of his life that it is the main thing he has to express in his art, what comes out over and over when he sits down to consider what he has to share...

You’re Losing Me Analysis

I wanted to do a short analysis on You’re Losing Me. My first impression of this song is that it’s another breakup song addressed to her fans in allegorical form like high infidelity (see this post). There are multiple lyrics that substantiate this interpretation. It’s horribly ironic that swifties think this is a song abt Joe when it’s really abt them and their refusal to SEE her. I’m more certain than ever now that the eras tour is a goodbye to her fans before she comes out

You say “I don’t understand” and I say “I know you don’t” // This is reminiscent of the bridge of Dear Reader. These desperate prayers of a cursed man spilling out to you for free but darling, darling, please, you wouldn't take my word for it if you knew who was talking. There is a communication issue between her and her fans. Her fans don’t know who she really is and are gonna be really confused when she comes out bc they thought they knew her

We thought a cure would come through in time…Now I just sit in the dark and wonder if it’s time // This parallels the archer. Should she stay in her dark closet or step into the daylight? Dark side, I search for your dark side. But what if I'm alright, right, right, right here? Also the mention of time makes me think of “meet me at midnight” and all the clock/time imagery she’s been using lately alluding to a countdown. Spring breaks loose, the time is near / Are we only biding time 'til I lose your attention? Her Cinderella facade is abt to expire at midnight

The heartbeat is an obvious callback to wildest dreams which she includes twice in the setlist, once in the 1989 era and once in the seven spoken word poem which again makes use of this Cinderella metaphor. This poem essentially tells her fans “You can cling onto this idealized version of me in my Cinderella dress or you can meet the real me at midnight”

Do I throw out everything we built or keep it? // Again the archer. Should she come out and potentially ruin her career and her relationship w her fans or stay in the closet? She chose the first option and burned the lover house down. Dear reader burn all the files, desert all your past lives / He's gonna burn this house to the ground…So yeah it’s a fire it’s a goddamn blaze in the dark / 'Cause there were pages turned with the bridges burned. Everything you lose is a step you take. So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it. You've got no reason to be afraid

You might have just dealt the final blow // Don’t Blame Me transitioning into LWYMMD. Her singing “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Because she’s dead” while all the glass closets keeping her past selves trapped shatter and they walk out finally freed. The Anti Hero mv where her daughter in law (representing the hardcore swifties) is the person that kills her and the younger son (gaylors) points this out which enrages her and sparks a brawl. Happiness, which includes a reference to the Cinderella/midnight metaphor, being a eulogy to the old Taylor and her relationship w her fans—“dappled with the flickers of light from the dress I wore at midnight, leave it all behind”

These lyrics make it pretty clear who she’s talking to imo. How can you say that you love someone you can’t tell is dying? I sent you signals // Sending signals to be double crossed / You didn’t even hear me out, I gave so many signs so many times

Now you’re running down the hallway // Dear reader, get out your map, pick somewhere and just run

I gave you all my best me’s, my endless empathy // After giving you the best I had, tell me what to give after that

Fighting in only your army, frontlines // Combat, I’m ready for combat / So yeah it’s a war, it’s the goddamn fight of my life

A pathological people pleaser who only wanted you to see her // All of mirrorball and Nothing New. The Dear Reader bridge. They see right through me. Can you see right through me? The delicate mv. Giant Taylor begging the audience to see her in the eras tour Anti Hero performance and storming off after being ignored

I know there is a lot of analysis and interpretation of daylight mv around, but one of the important things that was in my mind from the first moment is that we got a lot of momrry, babygirl, and meme content from Harry that we can use for a long time.

Same anon on Travis Kelce ask. I think what most haylors fail to accept is that Harry has been saying no to Taylor since 2020. The Daylight mv is a good proof. It's about & for Taylor but Harry saying, "If I was a bluebird..." But he is not. He's been yelling at her, so to speak on that megaphone, but she just won't listen. And haylors aren't listening too. I think it's best to help Taylor out as you just did on your answer but not push the Haylor narrative anymore. I just think that's more helpful to blondie.

I don’t agree with the view that “Harry has been saying no to Taylor since 2020”. No about what? I don’t think he would ever be willing to again be part of a banquet of boys with whom she hooks up (no more JALBOYL or Fool’s Gold stuff). So yeah, much firmer boundaries. (If I am being honest, my guess is his unwillingness to do so might have set the stage for May’s MH three weeks of yuck.)

But what I am documenting is the ways they seem to still be communicating, sending messages to each other, whatever the messages might be since their meaning is not fully clear to us fans. I wouldn’t classify that as “pushing the Haylor narrative”. These things are actually happening. I am citing sources and using data, and I am saying it’s spec when it is.

And the Daylight MV is an example, but I disagree with your argument about the Bluebird. I think that reference ties to this poem by Harry’s beloved Bukowski, and it’s a heartbreaker.

The bluebird? Is the vulnerability and softness he feels he can only let out (at night) sometimes (so it doesn’t die) and if he could share it? It would be with *her*.

And look at this timeline I outlined:

He filmed a whole video packed with messages for her on May 10/11, 2022 after weeks (or even months) of planning.

Then SIX DAYS LATER he films a decoy video.

Then he sits on the other Haylor-coded one for nearly FIFTEEN MONTHS. He could have never released it; he has done that before. But he chose to, on July 19, 2023. Why would he do that?

And the Satellite MV. He could have let us wonder who the song was about. But after the May 3rd video release: no more doubt. Blondie. And it was entirely developed after she dropped Question…?

And I do not have firm answers. I am just archiving what is happening.

It’s the same thing with his set list changes. Why add Stockholm Syndrome?

Why drop LOML and add Fine Line?

And her! Why did she make the it so clear that Question…? was about him? Why did she have it on the album at all, holy sh*t. It’s not fair to ask that Blondie, especially since you already know the answers!

Why did she approach him and touch him in public at the Grammys, twice?

Why did she play Question…?, a song that “brings me a lot of happy memories” on May 20th?

These are just some of the very obvious ways they are sending messages. And I don’t have definitive answers. I am noting what I see.

In-Depth Analysis of "You're Losing Me" by Taylor Swift

So this first part, I'm just gonna go line by line and point out comparisons to other songs or possible hidden meanings.

[Verse 1]

You say, "I don't understand" and I say, "I know you don't"

We thought a cure would come through in time, now, I fear it won't

Remember lookin' at this room, we loved it 'cause of the light

Now, I just sit in the dark and wonder if it's time

Damn, it gets deep reallll fast. Clearly from the first line, Taylor broke up with Joe, not vice versa, and he was confused why. The second line refers to the later line about being sick. She compares their relationship to a terminal illness.

The third line is a reference to Daylight, and the fourth line is contrasting like three. I wonder if it's a reference to her (possibly) writing the song before they broke up but she thought they might, so the song is the one sitting in the dark wondering if it's time, to be recorded and let the world know what happened.

[Pre-Chorus]

Do I throw out everything we built or keep it?

I'm getting tired even for a phoenix

Always risin' from the ashes

Mendin' all her gashes

You might just have dealt the final blow

Obviously the first line is a reference to the Lover House rooms being empty and later burned down during The Eras Tour. Taylor compared herself to a phoenix rising from the ashes, a reference to Reputation. Taylor has come back from so many things, but she doesn't want to repeat that cycle with her lover, Joe. The "final blow" is a mystery, but I have to think (going by the bridge) it was Joe's refusal to get married.

[Chorus]

I interpret this chorus as Joe upsetting Taylor and she's asking him to stop before he loses her, but he doesn't. By the third time, it has killed the relationship, and her "heart won't start anymore, for" Joe. 💔

[Verse 2]

Every mornin', I glared at you with storms in my eyes

How can you say that you love someone you can't tell is dyin'?

I sent you signals and bit my nails down to the quick

My face was gray, but you wouldn't admit that we were sick

Storms in my eyes could be a reference to Ready For It? MV, where she has lighting in her eyes, but the line is saying that she was troubled and you could see it, but he never did. The second line is just heartbreaking- but that and the fourth line are a direct reference to All Too Well's "dead, gone, buried/come back swearing it's the same". The third line is a reference to Exile (that they wrote together) saying "I gave so many signs"; it's also referencing the anxiety she's had in the relationship lately.

[Pre-Chorus]

And the air is thick with loss and indecision

I know my pain is such an imposition

Now, you're running down the hallway

And you know what they all say

"You don't know what you got until it's gone"

Joe clearly is not able to make a decision about furthering the relationship. Taylor feels like her pain of not getting married or taking the next step in the relationship is just annoying to Joe, and not something he cares about. The hallway could be a reference to Maroon "standing hollow-eyed in the hallway", but Joe runs down the hallway to get away. The hallway line could also be furthering the picture of the relationship being terminally ill, and he leaves the hospital room (to the hallway) because he can't take it. The 3rd and 4th lines show their regret and pain at it ending, but know they can't go back.

[Post-Chorus]

My heart won't start anymore (Stop 'cause you're losing me)

My heart won't start anymore (Stop 'cause you're losing me)

I think the post chorus is cool (in the saddest way) with the heart beat stopping at these lines.

[Bridge]

How long could we be a sad song

'Til we were too far gone to bring back to life?

I gave you all my best me's, my endless empathy

And all I did was bleed as I tried to be the bravest soldier

Fighting in only your army, frontlines, don't you ignore me

I'm the best thing at this party (You're losing me)

And I wouldn't marry me either

A pathological people pleaser

AHHH the best part. This bridge is sooo sad, but very eye-opening. I think the first 2 lines are referencing the songs they wrote together (the majority of them have sad overtones), but now THEY are becoming the sad song, and again, he ignores it. The 3rd lines is a direct reference to Mirrorball, with "all my best me's" paralleling with "I'm still trying everything to keep you looking at me." "The bravest soldier" line and the 4th and 5th line are a reference to The Great War. She's taking the worst of the arguments and battles, but he, again, ignores her pain. The 6th line is a reference to YOYOK, "I searched the party/just to learn you never cared."

Now the SADDEST part of the whole song T-T. "I wouldn't marry me either", clearly means Joe didn't want to marry her, and she blames herself for that, calling herself a "pathological people pleaser." Her goal in people pleasing, though, is so that he would see her. Very clear reference to the chorus of tolerate it.

And I'm fading, thinkin'

"Do something, babe, say something" (Say something)

"Lose something, babe, risk something" (You're losing me)

"Choose something, babe, I got nothing" (I got nothing)

"To believe, unless you're choosing me"

Taylor is now begging Joe to take action, in any way. Say something, take a risk, lose, and choose her. The chorus after tells us he doesn't. The last two lines here are a reference to hoax, "your faithless love's the only hoax I believe in."

All in all, this is my all-time favorite Taylor Swift song. There's so much more to dive into (I spent hours talking about it yesterday) so I'll probably do a part two with more stuff! Anyway, let me know what you think of the song!

Hellllllloooooooo, omg I had so much fun writing this, reading through everything and dissecting information. It reminded me how much I love to research and learn.

But buckle up peoples this is a long one. 

**Initial thoughts while watching the video (before any research or reading anything):

The ladder at the beginning

Is he finally coming down to earth? (The rover from mars, finally coming back down to earth.)

Where is he coming from and where does this ladder lead?

Was he up there looking for something?

Then later I had the thought if this was purgatory, but I’ll explain later

Celesine Venus and lyric matching

That caught my eye fast but I didn’t know where it was from

Yes that’s for sure that kind of bike, and it’s interesting because I always found those bikes scary, I’m scared of heights so that fall would hurt.

Charlie Chaplin:

Yes, let’s freaking go, I love old school Hollywood and the start of cinema, I don’t know if you ever listen to this podcast: http://www.youmustrememberthispodcast.com but its so good and gives great context to what was going on and stories lost to history.

This line you pulled is interesting: the third carries a balance scale, rides a black horse, and symbolizes famine. One of Harry’s signs is Libra and the symbol for Libra is the scales. The scales reveal Libra's need for justice, balance, harmony, and fair play. Libra's glyph is representative of an equal sign or the horizon with the Sun rising above it.

**My thoughts / more in-depth:

*The Ladder*

This was bothering me, like it was the first thing, where is it going, why is he coming down from it. So I started looking into a ladder leading to the sky to figure out the symbolism, I was starting to think is it stairs to heaven? But it’s a ladder. And when I think of the sky I think of the heavens and space etc. But after finding what I found it made me think, is he in purgatory?

So what I found was the story of Jacob's Ladder, I’ll pull some interesting things:

Christianity

Jesus said in John 1:51 "And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man." This statement has been interpreted as associating or implicating Jesus with the mythical ladder, in that Christ bridges the gap between Heaven and Earth. Jesus presents himself as the reality to which the ladder points; as Jacob saw in a dream the **reunion of Heaven and Earth**, Jesus brought this reunion, metaphorically the ladder, into reality. Adam Clarke, an early 19th-century Methodist theologian and Bible scholar, elaborates:

As I was surfing through Tumblr after the video dropped, I noticed some were asking, where’s the blue bird? Why wasn’t he dressed as a blue bird, why is he the yellow bird. And some confusion because he's singing about a blue bird but he's yellow. 

And I’m like exactly, and I’m like yes they’re catching on, because like we said he’s the yellow bird, he’s not fully free, he’s a performer, a singer, he can’t up and fly away. He’s stuck in this circus, practicing away. Not going back up that ladder. Who is this blue bird, talked about but not seen. Which leads to my next point.

So after the Celesine Venus and lyric matching and someone brought up on Tumblr the death card, I don’t have the link tho. But then cards started to pop into my head.

Death Card: Tho on the death card it’s normally a white horse and in the music video I can’t tell if the sun is rising or going down. I'm thinking its setting and its the golden hour.

THE FOOL DESCRIPTION

Totally separate from the music video but it came to me last night.

Was it all a dream?

Let me throw this out there. I was thinking about the past few music videos and the album as a whole. And I wonder, when we think of Harry’s House, we think of the physical space. The physical symbols, you are home door etc. But what if he was inviting us all into his mind, into his dreams? And I saw some comments that his videos don’t make sense,. But when do our dreams and fantasies we have in our head make sense? It’s our brain trying to figure out the outside world or its spirit sending out symbols. 

And when you look through his music videos through that lens and looking at dream symbolism that’s when it gets interesting and more fun as well. 😜🧐

When I saw it was Sagittarius I immediately thought about him being on the horse later so I wonder if that ties in. Sagittarius is known for being the sign of higher education, philosophy, and religion, and it rules travel. It makes me feels like the horse at the end may symbolize him either beginning this journey to higher understanding or highlighting that he reached the Sagittarius state, like he’s more self aware and educated and worldly.

I want to add that he’s the only male presenting one, I saw somewhere else that there are men in the video but they aren’t overtly masculine. It’s interesting because of the discussions around his gender, and sexuality.

That’s an interesting connection to make! When the TV is off, you can more clearly see yourself. It almost becomes a mirror.

Now I’m randomly thinking of the Greek myth of narcissus (yes where the word narcissist comes from). Basically narcissus fell in love with his own reflection “shut your mouth, open your eyes and see, I’m still the only one who’s been in love with me.”

Interesting because I think there’s a theme of fear of falling, or falling in love as dangerous, but he mentions it in many songs, literally falling. I totally think he has intimacy issues which can make falling in love scary. I can’t reference all his lyrics but some of the leaked ones had lines like “I could never get sick of you, I just bit off more than I could chew” “who’s this man holding your hand” I think falling in love freaked him out.

I immediately thought of this lyric “Go home, get ahead, light-speed internet.” And “all we want is automatic all the time” and “tea with cyborgs.” Harry seems to reference dissatisfaction with our current society in some of his music and he seems to be commenting on humanity and it’s short comings.

Sad clown

Okay basically I was talking about how I think Harry sees himself as Pierrot and is always pining for his Columbine. The sad clown becomes friends with the moon. This character is supposed to be a comic relief character.

There’s also a famous song called Tears of a Clown, by Smokey Robinson

Furthermore, the sad clown is a trope in art and creates the Sad Clown paradox, which explores the link between depression and using humor as a coping mechanism.

Vintage Circus

Okay! So I remembered after I posted my post yesterday about this tidbit I read at the Blues museum in St. Louis. It said that touring blues musicians started out touring with side show circuses as a way to reach people. We also see this in the Elvis movie, how Elvis started with touring with the local fair/circus. Many artists play fairs early in their career, specifically in the Country music field. Furthermore, the touring life is part of the circus as well as for Harry. There is a resonance there, it’s a similar lifestyle.

Yes! I thought of this Libra connection as well. But also famine, when we think of famine we think of people who are hungry, he brings hunger. Think about the rabidity of his fan base. Starving for more always. Ties into music for a sushi restaurant video where he’s literally going to be devoured.

Yes! Isn’t that interesting because Harry in his career embodies an ideal. There’s commentary there about reality versus impression. And later you commented on how horses became obsolete and Harry discussed how Billie Eilish sort of helped him come to terms with his own obsoletion and how his fame and career may change when he stops being “it.”

Bluebird

I think we talked about bluebird symbolism and how it was used in Bukowski poem to represent this hope or this dream, creative outlet as this bluebird that he has caged inside. Miranda Lambert has a song called Bluebird too. I think it’s interesting because he’s saying he can’t be a bluebird. Presumably he can’t be a bluebird like his person. But also it’s kind of this heartbreaking experience right. Like I wish I could be what you need but I can’t. If I could, I’d give you the world but I can’t be. And a lot of relationships have this outcome where ultimately you realize you just can’t be what they want or need and that means you aren’t meant to be together. It’s one of the most heartbreaking moments ya know? Also blue represents sadness and yellow represents joy. I think in his growth he’s accepting he can’t go back, he can only be who he is now and he has to release the past.

Isn’t it crazy how even back then he was leaving hints. I wonder how intentional or coincidental (synchronistic) it was.

Also I had this thought too, his head is literally in the clouds, an idiom that means like not being in touch with reality or like being a bit delusional, unrealistic. Head in the clouds made me think of Drake.

Was it all a dream?

In promotion of the album he said that he wanted people to feel a day in the life of him and his mind. So yes some of this may be more dreamlike or not seem logical because our minds aren’t always logical
