Welcome to my new AU! AKA The Utena AU, I've been revisiting this anime lately, and god I think it's better than the last time I saw it, super recommended for anyone interested.

Anyway, basically this AU came about as a way of coping after reading Doth (Yeah, yeah, what a surprise) for anyone who doesn't know The Dawning of the hour, is a fic series written by @thedawningofthehour where Draxum kidnaps Donnie and stuff.... happen. Anyway, they still haven't reached the happy ending and I need a way to deal with it, and after watching a video analysis of utena I came up with a way to do it.

Pants, moans and occasional growls slipped out from both of your lips, swallowing each other’s sound in heated and passionate kisses, your lips pressing on his, his tongue made its way inside of your mouth, exploring every inches of you with his warm hands, feeling up from your thigh, to your waist down all the way up to your chest before resting softly around your neck, barely applying any pressure just so he could angle your face the right way to kiss you how he wanted.

You pulled away from his to admire his every features, the way his eyes were slightly glimmering under the faint light coming from outside, how a few drops of sweat would pearl near his hairline, his black hair sticking to his forehead, beautifully framing his face, his mouth agape as his hot breath fans on your lips, low and barely audible sound making their way out of his beautiful swollen lips.

It had been a while since you and Jun saw each other and finally being with one another, sharing your love and adoration felt overwhelming, it was a lot to take in, almost too much.

You ragged breath turned into faint sobs, your emotions getting the best of you, the sound that you made brought Jun out of whatever trance he was in.

“Baby ?” he asked worriedly, getting no answer from you he halted his movements and brought your face for you to look into his eyes.

“Y/N ? Love, did I hurt you ? Please tell me I didn’t hurt you.” every alarm was setting in his brain, he knew you guys were the passionate type during those moments but never has he done anything that could hurt you, so the thought of doing it made panic rose within him.

“No - I’m fine, you didn’t do anything wrong,” you began, seeing him untense above you, rubbing both his thumbs on your cheeks to sooth you from whatever made you break down like that.

“I just missed you so much and all of this feels overwhelming and I didn’t mean to cry like I’m so sorry I just -” he hushed you with a kiss, firm and quick but which held so many words.

“I missed you too, a lot. Don’t apologize for that, okay ?” he reassured you, obvious care in his tone, his words and acts never failed to make your heart swell.

“You’re not going to leave again, are you ?” you whispered against his lips, your eyes closed to hold back the tears that were threatening from rolling down your cheeks.

“I’m not leaving. Ever.” Jun truthfully said, finding himself getting emotional on his own, seeing you allowing yourself to be so vulnerable before him always made him feel some type of way, the more the time passed by, the more he was helping you out of your shell, and so were you.

You guys were like two flames, even more powerful than soulmates. In addition to being made of each other you also made each other grow, when you met, your lives just completely changed. You started seeing the world differently. You were pushing one another to engage with the divine, shift consciousness, and become a better, soulful being in this experience.

And this is why your relationship was so intense and challenging.

It was making you deal with both of your unresolved issues and become bigger persons.

Tonight was most certainly another moment of growth and emotional bonding.

“I’m not ready to lose you.” Jun confessed, blinking and allowing a few tears to slip from his eyes.

You brought his face down to yours and kissed his tears away, messily rubbing your nose against his as a sign of reassurance, holding his face close to yours, as if you were one.

“You’re the reason I’m still here..” you replied, sincerity blooming out of your sentence.

This moment was intense to say the least, what started as a passionate and loving night was taking a complete turn and slowly grew onto a night of deep hearted confessions.

“It’s us against the world, right ?” he said chuckling softly, subtly referring to that one night you were the first one to say this, you had decided to meet up atop of a hill which was hovering the city, being visited by a few couples and group of friends who wanted to stargaze just like you.

That night was meaningful, the world felt small and you were on top of it all, it was really you two against the world.

“I love you so much Jun, I love you so much it hurts.” you admitted, pouring your feelings directly within his heart, “And I love you more than any words or stars could express Y/N.”

The atmosphere was heavy, the warmth previously enveloping you had cooled down, a small breeze could almost be felt as no words were being spoken.

Kisses were being shared, even deeper and more passionate than before, it was almost becoming messy, none of you dared to pull away too much nor for too long, your lips barely leaving his, a thin layer of spit covering your lips as his tongue swiped against it, offering you the softest french kisses you could ask for.

You were just staring at each other, losing yourselves in one another’s loving gaze, his breath tickling your chin as you two tried to ease the tension that had made its way in your systems.

After a while, just staring at your lover, he leaned down to kiss you again, one quick kiss, earning a relaxed smile from you as you both let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding, that simple gesture had eased the tension and you kissed again.

Your bodies started moving under the covers once again, your right hand tangling in his hair to pull him closer to you, if that was even possible, while you left hand held onto his arm for dear life, scared he might just disappear under your touch.

Jun wasn’t doing any better, one arm sneaking under you to press your chest flush against his, as his other hand mimicked yours and ran through your hair.

At this moment, you two really made one, unable to be without the other everything fell into place. The way he was holding you close to him, as you were half laying on top of him, completely out of breath, stroking your sticky hair out of your face, lowering his gaze to admire your face, a lazy smile adorning your lips as you absentmindedly drew random shapes on his chest with your fingertips.

“I’m never going to leave you Y/N. I promise.” Jun breathed out, kissing the crown of your head as you slowly drifted off to sleep, wrapped in his warm embrace and endless love, being with him feeling as comforting as it could.

It felt like home, he felt like home. Yes, no matter what happened, you knew you could always run to him to find whatever you needed, you silently admitted to yourself that Jun is home.

You told yourself never to agree to be anyone else’s maid of honor. It was just too stressful. If you were to marry in the future, you noted it would just be an elopement.

Looking at your list, there were still a few things that needed to be checked before you could head off to hair and make-up. There were only a few more hours until the wedding started.

“Need any help?” Jungkook asked, sneaking in from behind, wrapping his arms around your waist.

You peered quickly at him before returning to your clipboard. “Yes, please. Here take these and bring them to table seven.”

“You got it, boss,” he said before giving a quick peck on your lips before doing as he was asked.

Your eyes widened, looking around to make sure no one was watching. “Kook! What if someone sees?!”

He smiled and ran off. Were you excited that you and Jungkook were finally together? Yes, but only a few people knew about your relationship. The next big thing was to tackle your mom, but you didn't even want to think about that right now. You’d deal with that later.

You heard your name, and quickly, you turned to see Yuna running to you.

“The flowers are set up on the tables as we speak, and your bouquet is here. I'll put it in your room, and then I'll return after getting ready.” Your eyes scanned the rest of your checklist, ensuring everything went smoothly.

“Thank you. You're a godsend. I don't know what I'd do without you,” Yuna said, pulling you in for a hug.

You straightened and wrapped your arm around hers. “Let's not find out...again,” you chuckled.

After the hectic morning, you were able to find some time to quiet down and get ready. You slip on the sage green velvety off-the-shoulder bridesmaid dress, the gold drop-down pearl earrings, and the strappy beige Jimmy Choos. You took one last look at yourself in the mirror before grabbing your bouquet filled with eucalyptus, peonies, and blush pink roses.

Stepping out of your door, you found Jungkook leaning against the wall, looking dapper in a three-piece navy suit and hair slicked back, showing off his defined and chiseled jawline. You could kiss that jawline all day if you could. He took one look at you, mouthed a 'wow,'and whistled.

You narrowed your eyes at your hunky man. “Shut up.”

He stepped closer to you and took your hand, spinning you around to get a better look. “Damn, you're sexy,” Jungkook groaned in delight.

“Shhh —”

“You should dress like this more often so I can take everything off.”

“KOOK!”

He laughed and grinned as he tried to bring you in for a kiss. You tried to push him away, but he held on tighter. “I'm not letting go until I get a kiss from you.”

“You're trying to get us caught.”

“Mmhm, I want everyone to know we're together.” He let out a soft giggle as you rolled your eyes.

“Fine. God, you're so bad.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Admit it. You like it.”

“Maybe a little.”

“Ouh, you're kinky.”

“Okay---I'm leaving.” You tried to pull away from him again, but he chuckled and rolled you right back into his arms as he gave you a back hug.

“I'm kidding. I love seeing you like this. Flustered, that is,” he smiled, pressing his lips to your right shoulder, making his way up to your neck, leaving subtle marks behind. You let out a slight whine as he continued.

“I'm going to have to cover up these marks if you keep going.”

“Mm…” He continued, not caring in the world if anyone walked by.

You weren't sure if he even heard you. “Koo…” you muttered softly. He pressed deeper into your skin, and your head began falling back into him. You quickly turned around to face him. “You have five minutes. FIVE!”

“I can do that.” He grinned as he opened the door to your room, letting you go in first.

You quickly straightened your dress and grabbed your shoes, scrambling to get yourself ready again. You ran to Yuna's dressing room and knocked lightly.

“Yuna..?” you muttered before opening the door, peering in to see her sitting in front of the vanity.

“Finally, where have you been?” she asked, putting on a diamond earring.

“Sorry I got held up,” you said, closing the door behind you.

Yuna laughed as she took a look at her best friend. “Uh huh--I can clearly see.” She was pointing to the nipple pasty stuck to the side of your dress.

“OH SHIT –” You quickly grabbed it and tucked it into place. Fucking Jungkook–you told him not to remove the pasty, but he wouldn’t listen. He just had to feel all of you.

“Spare me the details,” Yuna chuckled while matting down her hair.

You nervously chuckled and began walking over to her. She turned to the mirror, taking in one last look before it was time to go. “You look gorgeous. Namjoon is going to cry.”

“He's definitely going to cry.”

You leaned down to hug her from behind. “I love you.”

“Love you too.”

The wedding was beautiful and everything you and Yuna had dreamed about when you were younger. After Yuna and Namjoon's first dance, the MC invited everyone else to join in. You sat there with twinkles in your eyes, watching your best friend so happy. Then you felt a tap on your shoulder. Jungkook stood there with his hand out.

“May I have this dance?”

You gazed at the doe-eyed young man, asking so sweetly. “What about my mom?” you asked, worried about what she would think.

“She'll just think we're being friendly,” Jungkook suggested with a sly smile and puppy dog eyes.

You bit your bottom lip, hesitating to take it. You weren’t just worried about your mother. A slew of people you knew would whisper and gossip about the two of you.

“Come on. I promise I'll behave.”

If there were no one around, you’d dance the night away. You loved the thought of being in his arms–kissing, giggling, touching…

“You better.”

“I don't know if you'll behave, though.”

You lightly hit him in the chest as you stood up. He led you to the dance floor and held you close with one hand on the small of your back, the two of you swaying to the song playing. His honey-brown eyes glistened from the night sky, his smile beaming from ear to ear, revealing the cutest dimple carved within his cheek.

“What..?”

“...I love you,” you softly said as you reached up and pressed your lips against his, forgetting where you were, forgetting all the complexities that came along with your relationship. Nothing else mattered at that moment—just you and him.

It started with a pair of pearl earrings.

Well, it started with a pair of enchanted gloves, but Lucien still cringed to think of the way Elain never wore gloves and had never worn gloves. Really, it wasn’t his fault; he couldn’t get within ten feet of her without one of her sisters spitting fire, and then a war had been on, and then, after months of being not-so-subtly herded away from his mate and her garden, he’d finally taken the assignment overseeing the Spring Court and the mortal lands to give her the space she clearly wanted.

So he’d gone to a plant nursery in Spring and asked the kindly old faerie behind the counter what a female who liked gardening might want for Solstice. He’d bought the gloves on her recommendation, hoping they would at least fit Elain’s delicate hands.

He was pretty sure they had, but that was beside the point. The fact of the matter was that Lucien liked to forget about the gloves. He was fairly certain Elain had donated them to one of Feyre’s charities that collected coats and blankets and gloves for orphans or widows or the elderly several weeks later, and that was fine by him.

But she did wear jewelry, and quite a lot of it.

So it started with a pair of pearl earrings.

Jewelry was easy. Jewelry was simple. Jewelry was hard to fuck up, as long as one stayed within the bounds of good taste. 

And Lucien had known for centuries that good taste was hard to come by in the Night Court, so he made sure Elain never wanted for elegant, classic pieces.

So the pearls were followed by a band of diamonds for her wrist the next year, and then a long rope of pearls to match the earrings, and then several bangles of twisted gold and jade that he picked up on assignment in Xian. A few decades passed where he and Vassa sent a joint gift of thick teardrops of turquoise or garnet or rose quartz from Scythia every winter, and Elain started sending back letters with small, thoughtful odds and ends. 

When he’d finally returned to Prythian, finally forgiven his mother’s secret-keeping and accepted his place—mind-boggling as it was—as the sole heir of a Solar court, he’d offered up his services as a diplomat to his new High Lord.

To his father.

It was then, when Helion dispatched him to give their regards to Rhys at the Hewn City’s Solstice ball, that Lucien caught sight of Elain wearing a pair of onyx studs embellished with her initials… as if someone were carving a secret place for her in the brutal dark. In a fit of something approaching jealousy, he gifted her a ring studded with fire opals that winter. Another year passed, and the next Solstice she wore a tiara formed from twisted vines of jasmine, studded with dusky amethysts and warm rose quartz and fat pink pearls—a new piece for the royal family’s collection, commissioned especially for a lifelong princess of the Night Court.

It was a tiara, he realized as he caught the barely there glint in the eye of Rhysand’s spymaster and information broker, that was meant to make a statement.

He saw her again at the autumn equinox celebration in Velaris—Helion had outright refused to send him to Eris’s week-long revel—with thick silver cuffs on each wrist, topped with cabochon sapphires as big as Siphons. Azriel caught his eye over a glass of whiskey, and Lucien could have sworn the shadows wreathing the tips of the other male’s wings were laughing at him. 

So he called in a favor with his friends in Dawn.

Nuan had teased him, but he secured a signet ring engraved with whorls that were just a little too reminiscent of his eye to be entirely innocent for Solstice. It even contained wondrous little mechanisms that whirred and ticked like clockwork, just a bit too loudly for the wearer to ignore. 

Elain sent back a new lap desk crafted of warm redwood that reminded him of home, and it wasn’t until months later that he found a small thank-you note tucked in a clever, hidden compartment.

And so the years passed, and suddenly fifty had gone by. The tension between them melted into comfortable, if distant, companionship marked by gifts and whichever family gatherings Feyre saw fit to invite him to, and Lucien was happy to leave it to rest. 

She was young—so, so young. She deserved to heal in peace, to find herself without a mate breathing down her neck; Lucien had decided long ago, when he first set out to find the firebird queen, that he wouldn’t stand in her way. 

Anyway, Elain made no noises about dissolving the bond. She hadn’t begrudged him when he took up with Vassa in the aftermath of Koschei’s defeat and spent the rest his fiery queen’s too-short, mortal life at her side—the faint echoes of emotion he felt from her whenever she was reminded of him were only ever happy—so Lucien shoved down the instinctual, possessive urges of the mating bond and left her to her Night Court intrigues.

That is, until the next Solstice, when he caught a ticking, whirring glint of gold on the Shadowsinger’s smallest finger.

But before instinctive jealousy or irrational fury or the gut-punch of betrayal could set in, his own clockwork eye shifted and focused anew on the fresh scar that ran the length of his third finger—and the invisible, thrumming band of power that stretched away from it…

All the way to the identical scar on Elain’s hand.

Thinking of making an Olrox/Edouard fic! Basically Olrox hangs around Edouard in the cell because he enjoys his singing and let’s face it, Edouard NEEDS the company! Olrox enjoys the singing and so he comes by bringing small gifts and treats to Edouard like croissants, and small pastries and macaroons are his favorite. Even roses he slips through the cracks of the bars and Olrox being his number one fan! But really it’s because Olrox already knows Edouard and met him five years ago when Edouard was in the opera hall and San Domingue and Olrox was part of the crowd and was captivated! After the show Olrox swoons Edouard by asking him out. They end up dating in San Domingue and it’s a whirlwind of romance until it becomes a little too serious and Olrox was catching feelings for Edouard and had to abruptly leave.

This hurt Edouard because he was falling in love and Olrox just ghosted him! He gets angry that his very hot vampire boyfriend just grew board of him and left! The same year Edouard hooks up with his current boyfriend and a couple years later meets Annette and join the Maroons.

Now in the present Edouard is remembering his past and who he is and Olrox and is still very bitter how they ended things in San Domingue! He tells Olrox to go screw himself and Edouard pouts in the corner. Olrox comes back and feels terrible of what had become of his ex boyfriend which is common in Olrox’s track records of his low life expectancy of his relationships tries to make it better. Basically kidnaps Edouard and puts him in Olrox’s inn. Mizrak clutches his pearls on why there is a night creature in Olrox’s inn. Olrox shrugs and the three deal with their shenanigans before and after the eclipse!

I think that while Rose being gone helped Pearl be more independent and grow as a person, it wasn't necessary for her to go away for Pearl to reach that state.

Pearl's low self esteem and the fact that she was literally made to serve others made her latch into every big strong gem she loved and admired. Who she hoped would compensate for what she lacked and make her feel complete. Bismuth, Garnet, Rose. Things she struggled to come with but never fully unpacked until Sardonyx.

Add that to her overwhelming romantic love and devotion to Rose, love that she herself defined as "And I'm not yours, but, I make you so happy anyway!" and to her genuine belief in Rose's vision for a better future on Earth, and you'll see that as far as Pearl came, learning to build robots and swordfight and pillow spaceships and thousands other things,

She still defined herself as Rose's lover. Rose's knight, Rose's confidant, the one who knew everything about her, the one she trusted the most, the one she loved the most.

Their relationship was way different than a diamond and her Pearl, but it was still influenced by it. As even though Rose tried to make it equal by going as far as 'kill' her old self, he'd Diamond self, in order for Pearl and her to start over as equals, Pearl's baggage thst I listed above still made her put Rose above herself.

There's a high chance that she would have done that to Rose even without the whole diamond stuff, but it likely helped. Pearl idolized her. Even seeing so many of her flaws she accepted her fully and loved her for the transformation she went through, for becoming the version of herself she always wanted to be, and encouraging Pearl to go through a similar transformation herself. Pearl idolized Rose the way many people who are heads over heels idolize their crush, or the way people with low self esteem idolize people they look up to..... But, her being a pearl likely made it easier, to develop those tendencies and lean into them.

As much as they both tried, their relationship wasn't as equal as they wanted it to be. And a part of it was Pearl, and a part of it was Rose.

After Rose lost her first pearl, she was so scared to love again. To hurt someone again. And this fear guided her in everything she did. It made her transform her powers from ones of destruction to ones of healing, because she wanted to be a person who heals and grows and brings life. How fitting that her end was in the bringing of a new life for this world. But this fear is what made Rose close parts of her from everyone else, including Pearl. Parts of herself and mistakes she made she felt like she had to run away from and to bury deep down because she didn't know how else to deal with. She was never taught.

"There's one last thing I need to do. No one can ever find out we did this. I never want to look back. So, for my last order to you as a Diamond, please, let's never speak of this again. No one can know."

In a way, she likely thought she was doing Pearl some sort of a favor. If Pearl can never refer to her as her diamond anymore, then surely their relationship would be equal from now on. A fresh start. But in the end, her fear of confronting the past and her need to get away from it locked Pearl into an order she physically couldn't break. And how can any relationship be fully healthy when one of its member did something like that to the other?

Rose didn't tell Pearl about her original pearl. Just like how she never told the other crystal gems thst she used to be Pink Diamond. Deep down she had this fear that they wouldn't love her if they knew the truth. They would see her as "the monster she really was" (more accurately, the monster she *felt* she was).

And all those things led Rose to hide more and more things from Pearl, to keep even the closest person to her in an arm's length somewhat, to have no one she could be fully vunrable with.

And all the other gems idolized Rose in one way or another, which increased the pressure on Rose to never fully rely on them, to keep hiding and lying and covering up the truth and running away to maintain this idolized picture because she can't let them down, she can't let them know the truth, they'd *hate* her, they'd leave her alone!

Greg must have been such a breath of fresh air in that regard. He idolized her at first, but in "we need to talk" he broke the pattern and treated her as an *equal*. The stairs he used in order to meet her at her level and look her in the eyes are a good visual metaphor for this: Greg wanted to be taken seriously. He wanted to communicate and commit. He knocked Rose off the pedestal everyone including herself put her on. Even Pearl.

But he also understood her in a way almost no one else did. He came from a similar background after all. Leaving home, changing his name, reinventing himself, changing.

Rose admired change maybe as much as she admired life.

Gems are immortal and if they never get poofed, they look the same forever. They get made a full person, expected to be the same and do the sake thing forever.

But Greg... Greg is a human. They change all the time. He

Rose tried so hard to change but in the end she concluded that she failed. Rose tried to heal and help and grow but concluded that she failed. Biamuth. Jasper. The curropted gems. Spinel. Her original Pearl. The kintergarden where nothing else will ever grow. Rose looked back on her life and thought that she was a screw up and a fraud and a faliure. That she could never truly change. She was made a selfish diamond that destroys everything the touches and that's what she'll always be.

But Greg... Greg is a human. They change all the time. He changed in front of her own eyes! Physical changes like balding and growing a beard and emotional changes like becoming more mature after babysitting Sour Cream. He's like.... Everything she could never be. He kept surprising her and showing her little wonders she's never seen in all her thousands of years on Earth. He came from a similar background to her but his kindness was 'real'. And he never judged her when she told him about parts of her life. He also never dug in though, never asked, which let Rose only be as vunrable as she wanted to. She kept the really 'ugly' parts to herself.

So on the end, when the negetive feelings Rose felt and the burden she carried were too much for her to handle-she found an out. Steven. This way she could both take herself out of this world she believed she only caused damage to, and bring to it instead new life capable of growing, evolving, changing the way she never could. She'd be gone but she'd leave someone else for her family to love and cherish to feel the void she left.

And she underestimated how much she meant to them when choosing to do so, because she believed that in the end they'd be better without her. Unknowingly leaving them a broken family and her newborn son with a terrible burden to carry (and that's without even the Homeworld stuff Rose never imagined would ever come back).

But as tragic as it was, it forced Pearl to do something she never had to do before: define who she was without Rose Quartz.

For someone with such low self esteem and such strong devotion it was easy to define herself as a part of a couple, as only who she is for someone else. And it wasn't healthy. As a result, Rose dying left her not only aching and grieving, but with a full on existinal crisis.

She tried to fill this hole in her at least somewhat by lunching to other gems, specifically Garnet. But only the gems she felt were more confident, stronger and more expirianced than her (which is why she never did that to Amythest and Steven who she treated as people she needed to guide).

After Garnet made it clear to her that she refused to be used like that and that sometimes she had to rely on other people too instead of being the strong one all the time, Pearl had to learn how to find power in herself. This arc started before that in "strong in the real way" where Pearl knocked down Sugilite on her own despite being 'just a weak pearl'.

Over the course of the series Pearl never abondoned Rose's vision or stopped loving her (and nither should she), but she found out things that were only hers.

Friendships she made with local humans and human costumes she adopted to herself. Things she was made to do thanks to Steven being half human and having a close relationship with Beach City. When Rose was around Pearl mostly kept herself away from other humans since she saw no need to engage with them, but Steven took her out of her comfort zone over and over and with time she started to do it on her own.

Pearl's style also changed as the show passed to more masculine and with less pink, showing her development from her initial design as Pink Diamond's pearl.

Pearl found a lot of herself with Rose, but she could only find the rest once she was forced to think of herself as a part of a matching set.

The episode where Ruby and Sapphire broke up and Ruby discovered a love for comics and cowboys is a good example for that. Ruby and Sapphire self reflected and examined themsleves and who they were without each other. What they wanted and liked and who they wanted to be, only to choose to be together in the end of it, and more whole people this time.

They had to spend some time on their own but they didn't break apart forever. If Rose would have opened up and gotten help, if Pearl would have gotten a higher self esteem and dared to confront Rose a little more, maybe things would have been different.

Because Pearl and Rose really did love each other, and I think that they deserved to be happy together.

(S1E1) Steven Universe: Revolutionizing LGBTQ Representation in Cartoons

Hey there, I’m Mia, and welcome to the first entry of my blog! All of my posts are going to follow a similar structure, with the first half being about the show I’m covering, with a summary, what I enjoyed about it, and all that good stuff. The second half would explain what effect it had on the greater cartoon landscape, or what it represents in the industry. Today I’m going to be talking about a cartoon that’s very close to my heart: Steven Universe. The show first aired in May 2013 on Cartoon Network and ran for 5 seasons, a movie, and a single-season epilogue series. It’s about this kid named Steven, a half-human half-alien hybrid, who’s being raised by three ancient alien warriors named Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl (as you can see in the intro). Together they fight monsters and protect the earth from danger. These aliens are called gems, and every member of their species is based off a different kind of gemstone, from physical, chemical, and spiritual standpoints (which I think is REALLY cool, by the way). Over time, Steven Universe’s focus goes from wacky adventures to exploring deeper themes, such as grief, toxic relationships, depression, and living up to other people's expectations. The show has been praised for its absolutely stunning animation, incredible songs, and the way they developed their characters. It also has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, if you care about that kinda thing. 

Now let me tell you, I absolutely LOVED this show as a kid! I watched every episode as it came out, I drew fanart (see the picture below… Also ignore how bad it is. I drew it when I was like 13, okay?), I made my own gem-inspired characters, and it really impacted my view on the world. A major part of the show is its message of treating others with kindness and acceptance, which I try to live by to this day. 

Now then, how did it revolutionize queer representation, do you ask? Well, a majority of the characters on this show are part of the LGBTQ community. Stevonnie is a nonbinary character, the first out of many to appear on the show. Pearl is in love (though it’s unrequited) with Rose Quartz, Steven’s late gem mother. Every gem character on the show, in fact, are feminine-presenting agender beings. And Garnet, the most important character for this section, is actually two characters: Ruby and Sapphire, who were so in love that they vowed to fuse together and live as one for eternity (super adorable by the way oh my goodness). All of these characters were probably my first time seeing prominent non-cishet characters on TV, and the same thing can be said for a lot of people around my age at the time. It wasn’t easy for the show to do this, however. The most explicitly queer characters, Ruby and Sapphire, had to be censored in many non-North-American countries, with kisses cut out and some languages using masculine pronouns to refer to the more butch of the two, Ruby.

Despite all this pushback, Rebecca Sugar (the creator of the show) and their crew worked hard to make sure their characters were allowed to be who they really were on-screen. All this came to a climax during the 2018 episode “Reunited”, where Ruby and Sapphire have an entire on-screen wedding ceremony to celebrate their love. This was a HUGE deal at the time, and even countries where equal marriage was banned HAD to air the episode, due to about a million other plot-essential things happening during the second half. I vividly remember staying up until midnight JUST to watch the episode as it was released online, as I was extremely invested in the pairing.

Being able to have a queer wedding episode was no easy feat, and the Steven Universe crew had to fight hard with the network executives for them to allow it, but in the end, it was all worth it. After SU was able to break boundaries for queer representation in cartoons, other shows came along and were able to have out and proud LGBT characters as well! Adventure Time, which Rebecca Sugar started working on before moving to their own show, featured a kiss between two of its lead female characters: Princess Bubblegum and Marceline. The Owl House had the Disney Channel’s first openly bisexual protagonist AND first nonbinary character, Viewers were able to see a beautiful relationship blossom between Luz Noceda (the main character) and Amity Blight, her girlfriend, and Raine Whispers, who uses they/them pronouns has to be one of my favourite characters in the entire series!

Though this representation doesn’t only mean a lot to the world of animated television, it also means a lot to ME. I’m nonbinary and queer, and my family isn’t the most accepting of people who share my identities, so it meant the world to little 13-year-old Mia, who was ashamed of who they were, being able to see characters who were just like them! Those characters, as unimportant as the casual viewer might find them to be, allowed me to see parts of myself represented for the very first time. People like me were able to exist and be themselves, unapologetically, and it inspired me to do the same, many years later.

Okay, I just realized how long this entry was, so I’m ending it here, but in my defence, I had a LOT to talk about! You brought up something interesting about Pebble’s characterization the other day! You mentioned that he has self-respect and now I’m curious how you define it.

For me, I’ve always thought Pebbles was a kind of person who hid his own insecurities, fears, and vulnerability under his prickliness. He struck me as someone with an ego but didn’t think high of himself as a person. It’s not something he actively thinks and is just in the background of his own subconscious. Most of this headcanon comes from his entire existence being controversy, his constant comparison to Moon, and many people just not liking him. That sort of treatment would wear anyone down and affect their internal dialogue.

So I think Pebbles has self-respect and doesn’t tolerate the more obvious slights that push him past his limits, but regarding things like Sun? Not so much. Canonically, we get dialogue on his anger of Suns own faults in the Incident (TM), yet there’s nothing on Suns as a person (to my knowledge). How they failed Pebbles as a mentor and friend.

The only reasons I can think of are the rose-tinted glasses of Suns not quite coming off despite the anger, and Pebbles having low self-esteem. At least to the point where he wouldn’t consider how Sun’s personal faults have dragged him down.

Most of this just comes my own headcanon mind you. There was an immense amount of expectations placed on Pebbles from his colony, a controversy over his existence, demeaning opinions from other iterators, and then the comparisons to Moon. Put all of that on our little spitfire and you have what you see. Expectation combined with belittlement leaves little room for a healthy self-esteem.

My own idea of Pebbles healing comes from him learning to love himself. Part of self-love comes from acknowledging your own faults and holding yourself accountable. Another part is seeing what you deserve better people in your life.

This entire rant is summed up by, “Pebbles never seems like he loved himself enough to realize just how much Suns failed him. It was not just the rot pearl. It was their entire relationship.”

my idea is basically just that i like the idea of this person (Suns) who presents themselves in a glorious perfect light n ofc people are going to flock to that (as they want and intend) and this is something that Pebbles finds himself looking up to (+ the fact that in my stuff all of them are family) and so this intense sense of trust comes to be. even self-respecting people can slip and stay with someone if it's subtle enough. because there's no way this person who i trust and love so much could hurt me so much. and through the subtlety and the long time it takes to get better it evolves into smth worse without being noticed

the "godlike in comparison" comes to mind, too. he knows he's mighty, that's just a fact to be stated, and he won't downplay it and will rather flash it. he talks to survivor about it and i'm just imagining a person preening themselves in front of their pet. y'know. as a healthy n certain of themselves person would. Pebbles also says that the discourse over his creation never really bothered him and only gave to amusement. for the sake of variety and uniqueness, i choose to believe him, because everyone always likes to jump the "oh he has to have deep internal issues that causes this, what a poor guy" wagon. this repeats absolutely everywhere, everyone always goes to the "this character is very bad on it and emotionally unhealthy", how many times has one worked with a character that is actually stable and has strength in themselves?

as a person who has gone through dark things. as a person who believes that i'm good and stable now despite all the shit i did go through. i want to see a healthy fictional character dealing with social injustice and a rotten apple, fight for themselves because they know their worth and have a clear righteous goal set in front of themselves

it's a result of personal preference and perception, as well as my stated lack of care to stick to the canon guns religiously

While being Dark Quartz, the diamonds come and see the fusion and knowing that Rose Quartz! Reader is Pink Diamond.

They demand they unfuse this instant, but Dark Quartz refuses, and as punishment, White Diamond has no choice but to corrupt Rose Quartz! Reader, which causes both Darkiplier and Rose Quartz! Reader to both be corrupted.

Steven and Eric see this, and Pearl has no choice but to bubble both of them so they won't cause any harm.

Now all Steven and Eric do is be in Rose Quartz! Reader's garden and cry their eyes out, knowing they lost their parents.

Garnet is the one to comfort both of them and, when doing so, unfuses because they know it will only remind them of their parents.

Pearl is dealing with the grief of losing Rose Quartz! Reader ( like in the show ) and is with steven because she doesn't want him to meet the same fate.

Amethyst is the one to take their mind off it by going to Funland to cheer them up and make them smile.

[Analysis] Pearl Appreciation (Steven Universe)

I must admit that when Steven Universe (SU) was airing, I wasn't a fan of the show. However, I did watch the series at random intervals due to my friend group being largely obsessed with it. As many friends moved on from the series, I continued to check back in because of my favorite character from the show, Pearl. The Pearl we knew long before Blue Diamond’s Pearl and Yellow Diamond’s Pearl appeared or even the original Pink Diamond’s Pearl (now called Volleyball) joined the cast. 

 Despite her cold color palette and sharp edges, Pearl had a warm and motherly demeanor that was endearing to me. I liked that they said things that were sometimes wrong, but they were always confident in their words.

What truly stood out was Pearl's moments of grief and guilt, which were a result of their complex relationship with Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz (Rose). Pearl was privy to many of Rose's secrets, and her devotion was completely intertwined with Rose's influence. This was evident throughout the show, and Pearl's desire for freedom and independence often reflected Rose's own wants and desires rather than appearing as though it was their own wish.

Pearl’s whole inspiration is Rose, and their devotion is entirely engrained with Rose’s influence, this becomes more and more evident as we see flashbacks of Pearl and Rose's relationship in the series wherein Pearl still aligns themself to what they think Rose wants them to want over time. In a reflection of the earlier seasons, Pearl’s want for freedom and maintenance of independence is often just an expansion of Rose’s wants and desires going so far as to repeat Rose's words to themself in a rehearsed way. This likely stems not just from Pearl's affection toward Rose, but from having been born into a society of slavery and brainwashing. As a result, I feel that Pearl had the hardest time adjusting to the pressure and freedom of life on Earth, at least when compared to Garnet and Amethyst.

Garnet embodied the freedom that Rose wanted for gems. Garnet has let go of Home World, merged with another gem, and founded a peaceful existence on Earth. While Garnet grieves the passing of Rose as a friend, their self-identity is not defined by Rose as we see when Sapphire and Ruby are able to reflect and rejoin. And Amethyst, being younger, never knew the oppression of Home World, therefore can only understand from an outside perspective what Pearl, Garnet, and Rose have seen or experienced as gems who escaped from an oppressive society to find refuge on Earth. Losing Rose–while painful–is not nearly the same for Amethyst as it is for Garnet (by extension, Ruby and Sapphire) or Pearl.

So while Garnet and Amethyst are dealing with the loss of a close friend and family member, Pearl is dealing with the loss of her reason for being. Sure, Pearl was "free" under Rose, but she was maintaining her status as a servant or slave under Rose. The series did try to combat this by having Pearl "chose" to follow Rose, but–realistically–what other options did Pearl have? It was either return to Home World and become the slave to another gem (if not being poofed/destroyed) or follow their new, kinder master into an unknown, but less oppressive lifestyle.

Unlike Rubies or Sapphires, whose roles had their own levels and advancements within the system of oppression, a Pearls' station on Home World and other Gem-run planets had nothing to do with their achievements. Their existence was purely for the convenience and pleasure of other gems. It was to the extent that Pearls, from what I understand in seeing the show, were forced to take on a specific shape/figure and attire chosen by their owners, unlike the other gems who could choose, to some extent, a form of self-identity in the form they take when reforming from the gem-state (Steven Universe Future, Episode 4 “Volleyball”).

It is these underlying pressures that really drew me to the character, even before we learned about all these details surrounding Pearl's character. I felt like it was clear that this kind of story was intentional and meant to come out at some point since Pearl always seemed to take Rose’s death harder than the others, and it never felt to me like the only reason for that was an unrequited love. I think that a very telling scene leading up to this feeling is when Pearl meets Lion for the first time and ends up running away:

In the scene where Pearl meets Lion, they are destroyed emotionally at the idea that something about Rose is hidden from them, because they likely didn't have any secrets from Rose and because it seems to betray that idea of Rose trusting Pearl. Pearl's outburst from grief speaks a lot to their trauma and relationship with Rose. Amethyst gets upset but doesn’t follow and most likely does not really understand the depth of pain Pearl has suffered. Meanwhile, Garnet remains silent at Pearl's outburst, probably understanding that Pearl suffered a lot more as a gem with a significantly lower status when they lived on Home World but not knowing that Pearl had been Rose's, a Diamond's, pearl.

In the minutes following the outburst, we get to see how Pearl's character is a form of devotion to Rose's chosen path for her, rather than an independent choice or path Pearl came up with or joined after hearing about other gems wishing for freedom. It was Rose's idea, and Pearl, her Pearl ("my Pearl"), followed.

Amythest, again, can't really understand the difference in how Pearl views the loss. Garnet, while empathetic towards Pearl, is understanding that there is a difference in the feelings of loss because Pearl's different experience from their former lives on Home World, but also can't fully experience the depth of Pearl's pain because–unlike Pearl–Garnet was truly free of the Diamonds and their dictatorship while Pearl was still living directly under one and keeping that Diamond's secret.

It’s why I think Garnet remains so much more grounded in reality than Pearl–such as when Steven is born and Garnet accepts that Rose is gone, while Pearl can’t stop crying. They’re at two very different stages in the grieving process (Season 4, Episode "Three Gems and a Baby"). At times, this means that Garnet comes off a little cold to Pearl. Maybe not from the audience's perspective as viewers see Rose's passing as having been a long time ago by this point, but from a gem's perspective, it has only been, like, a few months or days even since the loss. Remember, that Pearl has been with Rose for more than 5,000 years, so 10-20 years with Steven is an incredibly short period of time for what is, essentially, an immortal life. That's not even taking into account that during those 5,000 years, Pearl really didn’t fully explore their freedom since Pearl spent it at Rose’s side, walking the line of what is permissible by Rose and what isn’t in terms of boundaries–unlike Garnet did who has had the chance to grow up apart from Rose, the Diamonds, and other parts of gem society.

I think a scene that speaks to this idea of Pearl never being free until Rose's passing comes from Season 2, Episode 9, "We Need To Talk," wherein Rose and Pearl fuse.

Rose, as a Diamond, and as the leader seemed to abuse Pearl without meaning to simply by stringing them along. Remember that fusing is a deeply personal experience for the gems. On Home World, it is a heavily regulated act and as Garnet, as well as Sapphire and Ruby, show and tells us, it is not a process to be taken lightly. While Pearl may have instigated the above scene where the two fuse, Rose is the one using Pearl here. Rose is doing so to entertain Greg, while Pearl is trying to show how close they are and disuade Greg from getting closer. When the two gems separate again, Rose’s focus is on Greg, and Pearl is clearly jealous and unhappy, trying to then tell Greg that he'll never be as close as they are.

We know that this is even more personal for Pearl, as she fantasizes about a relationship with Rose that Rose has fully encouraged, as seen here:

I thought about this a lot in the earlier seasons, and I realized that it’s not until Steven is beginning to enter his teens that Pearl really begins to assert themself fully as a separate, independent, and free being--likely because Steven is no longer as reliant on them for care. The "Back to the Barn" episode is a great example of this as we learn about Pearl’s former life as a gem-slave. It’s also a great episode because it’s them asserting themselves and finding themselves again after losing Rose and realizing that Steven won’t rely on them forever.

It sparks, in my mind, the journey that Pearl's character has to make is one that reflects on their grief, allows them to overcome trauma, and particularly one that allows them the attempt to overcome a secret trauma without anyone knowing. It is what made Pearl's story much more compelling to me from a character's storytelling perspective, as Pearl must first overcome their grief and then find a new definition of identity and path based on their own wants, needs, and desires–something the other main-cast gems developed years ago.

It is also why I liked later seasons where Pearl is shown to be moving forward in the grieving process beyond the state of reliving Rose’s death over and over (which, they seemed to be doing via reenactments during self-isolation away from the other gems and Steven). 

This development really showed itself in “Mr. Greg“ (Season 3), when Pearl sang “It’s Over, Isn’t It?” and by Steven Universe Future, Pearl’s character arc enters a state of healing–both from the grief of losing Rose and from the suffering they had undergone as a Pearl in the formerly oppressive gem society. 

Is Pearl completely healed? Probably not. I mean, again--they are very old and it has not been that long for them. However, they are, at the very least, free of the shackles and dealing with the pain, as noted in Pearl’s Song, featured in Steven Universe Future, "Happily Ever After."

In this Dark AU, Brienne struggles between Yvette and Annette's personalities who make her existence.

Two personalities, one full of rage, despair, fear, envy, apathy, disgust

And the other is full of love, hope, selflessness, empathy, kindness, and trust.

Brienne has Dissociative identity disorder or in short DID.

The two personalities are Yvette and Annette Moreau.

Two twin sisters from the 60s, souls with unfinished business.

In "The Tale of two sisters" both were brutally murdered unknown to the world and their parents.

The girl's souls were bound to a puppet named "Brienne Velvet" a vessel, their fusion.

Unfortunately, this brings Brienne to deal with a vengeful soul and spiritually kind soul.

But this is what makes Brienne, "Brienne" she is cocky, confident, and unique but she is also kind and loving.

Brienne isn't the same as OG Brienne due to being a fusion and defective.

This is NOT the Brienne, you know.

This is Brienne Moreau, different from Brienne Velvet.

A darker version of OG Brienne, tortured by two personalities with dark intentions...

I'll put it in this way, Annette is like Pink Diamond, and Yvette is like Rose Quartz from "Steven Universe.

Brienne pink collar eyeball is a reference version of "Rosario + Vampire"

The puppet Brienne Velvet being a fusion, a different person part from Yvette & Annette Moreau is a reference to Garnet from "Steven Universe".

It's like Garnet but a sister version, with their soul merging into a different person with both their qualities.

Brienne being a fusion is also a reference to Darkiplier but inside of the two souls being gone.

Yvette and Annette's souls are still in Brienne.

Wally and Home meet the fusion as Brienne Moreau much like from "Steven universe" like Rose quartz and pearl met garnet officially

Annette & Yvette talked to Brienne, only she could hear them until Yvette gave her the idea to turn her pearl into an eyeball.

The purpose is to talk to not only Brienne but to all the neighbors.

When the eyeball is blue, it is Yvette speaking, and when it's red, it's Annette.

When it is purple, it is Brienne while Yvette or Annette take control of her body.

Brienne's eyes are blue, and Yvette shows combat and her smarts.

When her eyes are red, Annette shows compassion, kindness, and manipulation.

When both eyes are blue and red, the sisters take over.

This is only for emergencies...

The sisters help Brienne in this world of choices on paths and make sure she stays alive.

Brienne fully believes she must save Wally from Home while many others and the sisters want to kill him.

Or the very least the neighbors want to leave.

Brienne has been titled "crazy" "nut job" and "The Mad Neighbor" due to her naive and " delusions".

Brieenne was never accepted by the neighborhood due to her unique aesthetic.

She convinced only Wally liked her, accepted her and her ONLY Best friend.

That wasn't the case, Julie joyful really enjoyed her company as well as poppy and Eddie.

Brienne and Y/n's relationship is vague, as Brienne means well to save the neighborhood.

By saving Wally, however, YOU and the neighbors don't believe Wally deserves mercy or is worth saving.

Y/n just wants to leave but can't help but have second thoughts.

Brienne knows Home has something to do with this and Wally was manipulated and brainwashed.

She tried to tell the neighbors but they won't help her and she begs Y/n to help her.

Y/n feels bad for her but can't tell if she is insane or just grieving...

Brienne and Y/n have a potential friendship or romantic relationship much like in the Evil Wally AU.

As for her pet, Nancy the black house spider went missing.

Brienne was so worried as were Yvette and Annette.

What they feel, Brienne feels much like their feelings for Julie and Y/n.

It was known in the show that Brienne had feelings for Julie joyful, as she was the one who accepted her.

A reference from "Killer Frequency" that brings a closure to Nancy "disappearance".

Brienne saves Julie from Wally only for her leg to be stuck under a wood.

She groaned in pain as she yelled at the neighbors to run.

Yvette and Annette tried to move the wood off but they weren't strong enough.

It ended to Brienne trying to cover her mouth as Y/n was on the walkie talkie.

"Brienne! Are you alright?!" Y/n yelled over.

"My...leg it's stuck. I don't what to do...he's looking for me." She whimpers

"Wait...oh no. He saw me, shit! Ugh!" Brienne grunts as she tries to move her leg.

It nearly brings her into tears as this is how she dies.

"Brienne, stay calm maybe" they tried to say but everything silent and they fear the worst.

"Brienne!" They yelled out, "he...he just pull the wood off and walked away." She whispered.

"W-what?" Y/n asked in confusion, "he put Nancy in my hair and left" she said as she was still in shock.

"Nancy...alive?" Y/n said as they heard Brienne get up and grabbed the walkie talkie.

She was running, "I'll meet you back at the base!" She said before ending the call.

Home wanted to get rid of Brienne as her personality would get in the way

Brienne wasn't acting her role, being the joyful gothic neighbor who doesn't question anything and is friends with everyone.

But Brienne seemed to be unliked, Wally and Brienne were friends but in the end, he kept shutting her out.

Brienne's only friend was Wally and she just wanted to know what did she do wrong.

What was wrong?

Why is so distant?

Angry, frustrated?

She was so worried, Annette. was worried while Yvette had a bad feeling making Brienne not only worried but frightened.

Not knowing what was to come...

Darkness came, the world was no longer light or bright....just dark.

Neighbors hiding from a monster.

Much like the others, Brienne hid but was worried where was Nancy?

Her pet spider was nowhere to be seen.

What if that monster ate her?!

Brienne wanted to cry, Nancy couldn't fight.

But then she covered her mouth as she heard Barnaby but she knew it wasn't him.

It's not HIM.

Lucky for her, the doors and windows were locked and curtains closed.

She couldn't sleep but who was the monster?

She wanted to look but Yvette told her not to.

It wasn't pretty and...she knew who it was. She knew it was the puppet they loved.

Brienne kept Yvette smart so she kept quiet throughout the night.

This went on for weeks, still, Brienne tried to reach out to Wally but the neighbors wouldn't let her.

As if they knew something and as time went on...she notice Eddie and Sally were missing.

Ever since the disappearance of the neighbors.

Brienne changed her wardrobe, she was wearing a unique outfit she designed herself and knife pocked on he red legs with sharp boots.

She had a pink collar with her pearl that Yvette turned eyeball.

Now, Yvette and Annette could talk through the eyeball.

It was Yvette's idea, Brienne needed to be prepared for anything and dressed for the situation.

One night, against Brienne's better judgment.

She went into the night against her voices, They begged and told her, through the eyeball for her to turn back.

The neighbors saw her leave the house not attempt to leave the neighborhood but to who the monster was.

The neighbors wanted to stop her but they knew.

They would get themselves killed too.

Brienne couldn't make out the figure until she squinted and saw...it.

Wally Darling...her best friend.

Brienne was horrified, betrayed, confused, and melancholy.

Yvette couldn't bare seeing this and Annette was horrified

She saw arms of her friends...body parts of those who she had meaningful connections with...

Why?

Why did he do this?

Wally would never do this...

Brienne had Yvette's smart and Annette's heart.

Deep down, she knew Wally didn't do this...he was brainwashed by his house.

Before Wally could grab her Annette and Yvette took over.

Her right eye was red while her left was blue and raised her axe in the air.

They raised it down on him, while missed him a blast came from the exe pushing him away from their body and they fled back into the neighborhood.

They ran into the house, locking the doors and windows.

They weren't taking any chances, they could hear Wally crawling towards the neighborhood looking for new parts.

Ss time passed...

Julie tried to convince her that it was Wally's fault for what happened to their friends.

She only cared for Brienne's safety and didn't want Brienne delusions to get in the way.

But...she knew Wally wasn't right in his head and he needed to be saved.

Or else Home was going to torture the neighborhood for eternity.

For Wally does not know he was killing his friends...
