Death: has never done anything wrong in their life, the one I’m going to romance

He Without Name: testing my resolve to romance Death, the mystery/slowburn potential is hard to ignore

okay, i don’t know if this has been asked before,, but how would Death feel if the MC (probably after they’ve known each for a while) offered to give them a nickname? something sweet and thoughtful 🖤

Death has been known by many names - but getting one borne of a connection? That will be a first.

But I think a truly thoughtful nickname for Death must reflect their character rather than their work.

Something sweet and thoughtful, like... Cookie 🍪

"Cookie?" Death repeats, the word unfamiliar yet delightful on their tongue.

"Because... because I'm sweet?" they ask, a rare hint of amusement threading through their voice.

It’s a term so far removed from their usual associations, but it fits them like a glove.

"Thank you," Death says, with a blush spreading on their face like ink dropping on water. Their smile is of genuine happiness.

"I've never been given such a... name. Wait - can I call you Cookie as well? What are the rules?"

Oh, you can bet they get jealous 👀

Death doesn't typically experience jealousy - As long as they know they are important to you. But in the rare instance, they do, it's a silent storm. You'd only notice by the wistful, sad look in their eyes, a glimpse into their concealed turmoil.

When Lilith/Damien feels the sting of jealousy, it's less about you and more about them feeling left out or replaced. They wouldn't confront you directly, but the third party might find themselves the target of subtle yet cunning mind games, a devil's way of reasserting dominance.

Morgan/Morgana's jealousy is as fierce as their magic. They're not one to hide their feelings, and a green-eyed scene could very well be on the cards. Their confrontational nature means they'll make their feelings known, and it might just be a tempestuous spectacle.

If Peisinoe feels jealous, expect a performance of passive-aggressive comments, veiled in their usual theatrical flair. They'd never admit to feeling jealous, but their behavior might become tinged with a hint of bitterness: a diva scorned.

Behind Hastur's stoic front lies a deep ocean of emotions, including jealousy. But you'll likely never see it. He deals with his feelings privately, never letting them show or burdening you with them. His poker face remains impeccable.

For He Without Name, the concept of jealousy might as well be a foreign language. His existence, so different from the norm, doesn't lend itself to such human emotions. Understanding, let alone feeling jealousy, is a concept far removed from his reality.

Hello everyone! Down with covid (insert "so 2020 and late!" joke here) and the new update will have to wait for next week :(

But worry not! I'm actually very productive in the meantime and have begun to write the complete character arcs for the story, which was something I never got to, so thanks, covid, I guess.

Sharing everything will be, of course, super spoilery, but I thought I might share some of my thoughts after writing the endings for each character!

No actual big spoilers ahead, but still might want to avoid if you hate any sort of spoilers, even nonspecific ones.

Hastur His arc was mostly realized in my head already; I just had to put it into writing. I just... love this character so much. I can't wait for you to know him - the real him. Hope you'll still love him - I sure do. His story is about the meaning of forgiveness, guilt, and hope.

Yaga

Yaga's arc turned a lot cooler than I thought it would - with a lot of scheming and politics involved. She actually has tons of possible endings. Yaga's arc theme is a story of faith in humanity and its innate goodness.

Shelly

Shelly's story is going to surprise you. That's all I have to say. It's super sad and wholesome all the same - it's about coming to terms with the past, learning to let go, and finding peace and purpose. 

Peisinoe

Their story became darker than I expected, but the conclusion is so satisfying. If you ever grew up with a talent ruined for you by the demands of your peers, you might relate. It's a story about searching for meaning and making peace with the unchangeable.

He Without Name

I just want to say that I am so sorry. Please don't hurt me.

Death

I might never write another character as intricate as Death, and I'm ok with it.

Lilith / Damian

This turned out way more emotional than I had thought it would??? Get ready for a date in hell and some redemption arcs!

Morgan / Morgana

Damn, I kind of regret I added the option to avoid them in the game. I'll have to work hard to make the story without them as inspirational as it is with them.

The Raven

Well, he's too connected to the overall plot to say something explicit about but I loved that I wrote him as a temporary character and he became basically the most important to the plot. GO RAVEN GO

One day, the person who used to bully MC in their life walks into the bar. When MC sees them, bad memories start to resurface in their mind. Since they don't want to deal with their bully, they hide in the staff quarters. RO sees them and decides to follow them to ask if there's something wrong. When they find them, MC is on the verge of crying.

How would each of the ROs react? What would they do after MC told them about the bully?

Oh, this is a spicy one. Let's see... 👀

Death would focus on comforting MC rather than confronting the bully. "You know, in the grand scheme of things, they're just a blip in eternity. And if it helps... their demise was rather undignified – choked on a sandwich, alone in their apartment," Death would say in an attempt to offer some perspective, albeit awkwardly.

Lilith/Damien would react with a sly, menacing grin. "Let's give them a show they'll never forget," they'd whisper, their eyes burning with a profane light. They might use their infernal powers to torment the bully with nightmarish illusions, pushing the boundaries of retribution. Eventually, their actions might be so extreme that MC finds themselves feeling a pang of pity for their bully.

Morgan/Morgana, after hearing MC's story, would express a fierce protectiveness. "Who's the wretch that dares upset you?" they'd ask, ready to take action. They'd likely cast a spell that would cause the bully to experience a series of frustrating and embarrassing mishaps in the bar, providing a satisfying sense of poetic justice for MC.

Peisinoe would see this as an opportunity to demonstrate their own prowess in handling bullies. "Darling, leave it to me," they'd say confidently. They would approach the bully with a mixture of charm and intimidation, using their stage presence to publicly humiliate them.

Shelly would rush in with a worried look, immediately trying to cheer MC up. "Hey, what's wrong? You know you can tell me anything," she'd say with a comforting smile. She'd be indignant on MC's behalf and suggest telling the others or finding a way to make the bully leave. Shelly's approach is more about lifting MC's spirits, offering to make them their favorite drink or treat.

Yaga's approach would be one of tough love. "Crying in the back isn't going to solve anything," she'd say, her tone gruff but not unkind. She would encourage MC to face their fears and stand up for themselves. "You're stronger than you think," she'd add, perhaps sharing a personal anecdote about her own experiences with bullies to motivate MC.

Hastur, upon understanding the situation, would assure MC of their safety with a calm but firm presence. "They will not dare cause trouble under my watch," he'd say. His towering presence alone might be enough to deter the bully from any antagonistic behavior.

He Without Name would enter the room silently, his presence almost unnoticed until he's fairly close to you. "Sad... Why?" he'd inquire in his usual cryptic manner. Understanding the situation might be challenging for him, but he'd stay near MC, offering silent support.

The Raven, true to their nature, would take a more mischievous approach. "Time for the art of subtle revenge," they'd muse. They might orchestrate a small but humiliating incident, like discreetly dropping a... surprise... on the bully's head from above, much to the amusement of the onlookers.

For this special occasion, the characters have made some date plans for you. 🌹

Death will greet you with a bouquet of freshly cut chrysanthemums from their ethereal garden. Your date will unfold in a serene, secluded beach at the edge of the abyss, where the stars above mirror the luminous creatures of the deep below. Here, amidst the soft sound of waves, you'll enjoy a peaceful evening, finding beauty in the tranquility of the universe's edge.

Lilith/Damian gifts you a necklace adorned with a captivating red opal, its warmth a whisper of the fires of the inferno. Your date is set in an exclusive hotel cradled by the arms of a volcano in the depths of Hell. The hotel boasts stunning views and luxurious accommodations, but the true delight of your stay might just be the time spent in the privacy of your room, exploring the... depths of your connection.

Morgan/Morgana's present is a book with moving illustrations that recount how you first met, each page a spellbinding tale of your encounter at the bar. They whisk you away to an ancient grove under the stars, where magic pulses with life, and you dine on enchantments and the essence of starlight, enveloped by the forest's mysteries.

Hastur offers a hand-carved wooden animal, symbolizing a virtue he admires in you. He then dons the chef's hat to prepare a sumptuous feast right in the bar, showcasing his culinary skills in a meal that's both intimate and grand, served amidst the familiar surroundings turned extraordinary for the night.

Peisinoe invites you to an all-night gala in a realm floating through space, where celestial bodies provide the backdrop to a party like no other. The music, the dance, the company—all blend into an unforgettable experience that transcends the ordinary, with Peisinoe ensuring that for the night - you're the center of attention.

And then, there's He Without Name, who leaves a single flower under your pillow at night. It's a silent gesture, but in its simplicity lies a profound expression of care and connection, a reminder of the bond you share without needing words.

Lilith/Damien, reveling in physical contact, responds with a sultry smile and a confident embrace. The cuddle quickly turns more intimate, with them initiating a passionate make-out session, their touch both inviting and fiery.

Morgan/Morgana, amused by the request, teases the MC playfully before pulling them into a comforting hug. Pepper watches with mild amusement before sighing and walking out of the room.

Peisinoe responds with humor and grace, enveloping the MC in an elegant embrace. After a minute, they declare, “OK now, fun’s over!” clearly valuing their personal space.

Stoic and composed, Hastur might seem a bit rigid initially but gradually offers a protective and sincere cuddle, holding you with quiet strength.

You might have to do most of the work with He Without Name, who responds with a subtle, comforting embrace, akin to being wrapped in a gentle, shadowy breeze.

Getting Death flustered is almost too easy. Something as simple as a sincere compliment about their appearance can send them into a spiral of awkward thanks and bashful stutters. They're so unaccustomed to positive attention that genuine kindness hits them like a bolt from the blue. If you really want to break them, though, try being more... intimate with them - especially in public.

Lilith/Damien, on the other hand, is a tough nut to crack when it comes to getting flustered. You could mention the concept of marriage, and then you might catch a rare glimpse of them caught off guard. The idea of such a human and binding commitment can stir a mix of confusion and a flicker of something deeper in their otherwise composed demeanor.

Morgan/Morgana, with their confident and self-assured demeanor, would find it unexpectedly flustering if you gave them a cutesy, endearing nickname, especially in front of others, like calling them "bunny" in a room full of patrons or during a serious discussion.

Hastur would be taken aback by a grand romantic gesture in the midst of his duties, like presenting him with a bouquet of flowers or reciting a heartfelt poem dedicated to him during his security shift.

Here are some New Year resolutions from the cast of TBOTA 🥳

Death has resolved to finally take more breaks from their eternal duties. They've also decided to dive into their extensive reading list, which has accumulated to an impressive 7 million books so far. Wish them good luck!

This year, Lilith/Damien plans to party even harder, pushing the boundaries of excess. They've also decided for a change to prioritize their own desires and happiness, putting themselves first. Because last year they didn’t. Obviously.

Morgan/Morgana has set their sights on mastering some advanced-level spells, undeterred by the potential risks involved. Pepper is ready to deal with the chaos that might follow.

Hastur has taken an interest in fusion cuisine. He's determined to expand his cooking repertoire beyond mortal definitions.

Peisinoe humorously toyed with the idea of quitting smoking but decided against it. They remain as indulgent in their habits as ever.

Shelly is enthusiastic about starting her own recipe book. She aims to compile all the unique drinks she's crafted over the year.

Yaga has decided to try her hand at yoga, hoping to find some physical and spiritual balance amidst her usual number-crunching routine.

In this chapter, you join Death, The Witch, Hastur, and He Without Name on a journey to another realm - the realm of dead gods, Memoriam.

There, you will meet deities of remembrance embroiled in an eternal conflict. Perhaps all they truly need is a sympathetic ear over a drink?

And to get you hyped, here's a snippet from the upcoming chapter, especially for all of you who fancy Death.

You join Death's side as Memorium envelops you both in its haunting beauty.

The graveyard around you stretches endlessly, an ocean of memories sprawling across rolling hills and dipping into unseen valleys. Here and there, you can see books, flutter through the air like a flock of bats, their pages rustling softly in the wind.

"They must be flying to Bibliotheca," Death muses, watching the books with a sense of wonder in their eyes.

Then, turning to you, a gentle note enters their voice. "I know our reason for coming here is grim, but... I'm enjoying this time with you. It's strange. We've only met recently, but everything feels new since then."

You notice Death's gaze drifting to your hand, a moment of hesitation flickering across their face as if they are contemplating a significant decision.

You take Death's hand in yours, and their reaction is immediate - a broad smile lights up their face, transforming their expression.

My COVID era has officially ended, and now I can dive back into writing!
