Gather Conference
This looks like it will be very good! It is for LGBTQ Latter-day Saints and those who love them. September 15-16th in Provo, Utah.
I’m really impressed at the group of people they have involved in this.
Here is a list of presenters:
Steve Young - famous football player, stood against Prop 8 in California and for the LDS Church being more loving & inclusive of the LGBTQ community
Darius Gray - a Black man who joined the LDS Church in 1964, one of the first Black students at BYU, one of the founders of the Genesis Group, involved in the "Race and the Priesthood" essay, a supporter of LGBTQ rights and the church expanding to fully include them
Charlie Bird - gained fame as the BYU mascot Cosmo the Cougar who publicly came out as gay, author of the books “Behind the Mask” and “Expanding the Borders of Zion”, co-hosts the podcast Questions from the Closet, is an active LDS church member and public about having a boyfriend
Ben Schilaty - co-hosts the podcast Questions from the Podcast with Charlie Bird, they are the two most well-known gay men still active in the LDS Church. Ben wrote the book “A Walk in My Shoes: Questions I'm Often Asked as a Gay Latter-day Saint”, and works for the BYU Honor Code Office
Tom Christofferson - older brother of the LDS apostle Todd Christofferson. Is best known for leaving his long-time partner in order to rejoin the LDS Church and writing “That We My Be One: A Gay Mormon's Perspective on Faith and Family”, then publicly announced that he has begun dating
Allison Dayton - is founder of Lift+Love which seeks to provide a positive, uplifting space for LGBTQIA+ LDS church members and their families & friends
Liv Mendoza Haynes - best known from the 2021 BYU Women's Conference when Sharon Eubank presented her and Liv announced she is queer and that she once left the LDS Church but returned and shared the story of a bishop who made her feel welcome and asked how to make the ward a safe space. Liv is married to a husband and is a busy mom
Meghan Decker - is married to a husband, loves being a grandma, but she also is attracted to women, wrote the book “Tender Leaves of Hope: Finding Belonging as LGBTQ Latter-day Saint Women”
Michael Soto - a trans man who grew up LDS and spent the last 25 years being an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, including co-founding the Equality and Fairness Coalition, former CEO of Equality Arizona, and now is Chief Advocacy Officer for One Community
Iese Wilson - best known for his work of building bridges at BYU-Hawaii, where he publicly came out gay. His efforts include co-founding Hawaii’s first LDS LGBTQ+ support group off campus for students and staff of BYU-H, helped create and host the first LGBTQ+ fireside on the BYUH campus, and offered the first LGBTQ+ awareness training for the Guest Services Department at the Polynesian Cultural Center
Richard Ostler - host of the podcast Listen, Learn and Love and author of two books, “Listen, Learn and Love: Embracing LGBTQ Latter-day Saints” and “Listen, Learn and Love: Improving Latter-Day Saint Culture”
These individuals aren’t listed as presenting at the Gather Conference, but are shown to be involved in some way:

Ivan Desny and Ann Todd in Madeleine (David Lean, 1950) Cast: Ann Todd, Norman Wooland, Ivan Desny, Leslie Banks, Barbara Everest, Patricia Raine, Susan Stranks, Elizabeth Sellars, Eugene Deckers, André Morell, Barry Jones, Edward Chapman, Jean Cadell. Screenplay: Stanley Haynes, Nicholas Phipps. Cinematography: Guy Green. Production design: John Bryan. Film editing: Clive Donner, Geoffrey Foot. Music: William Alwyn. I wanted Madeleine to have the emotional depth of Brief Encounter (1945) or the imaginative finesse of Oliver Twist (1948), just to sustain my argument that David Lean was a greater director before he aimed for the epic scale of The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Doctor Zhivago (1965). But even Lean would later admit that Madeleine is something of a dud. The story of an "unproven" murder -- the verdict the Glasgow jury returned at the trial of the real Madeleine Smith -- the film needs to generate a Hitchcockian tension that Lean never quite masters. One reason, I think, is that it stars the rather pallid Ann Todd, Lean's wife, who had played Madeleine Smith in a stage version of the story, when it needs a more accomplished and charismatic actress, a Deborah Kerr or a Jean Simmons, to bring out the ambiguities in the character. Todd rises to the role only in the final scene, when Madeleine rides away a free woman, a mysterious smile flickering across her face as the voiceover narrator questions whether she was guilty or not guilty. Otherwise, she generates little heat in her love scenes with Ivan Desny as L'Anglier* and the scene in which she throws him over for her father's choice as a fiancé, William Minnoch (Norman Wooland), comes as an abrupt about-face. Lean seems to be trying to do something with the character of the lover, including much business with his brandishing a phallic walking stick, but it doesn't come off. On the plus side, there are good performances by Leslie Banks as Madeleine's father, the quintessential tyrannical Victorian paterfamilias, and André Morell gives a rousing argument for the defense in the trial scene. Guy Green's chiaroscuro cinematography creates the proper mood, as do John Bryan's sometimes oppressive interiors. *The spelling in the credits. The historical figure was called L'Angelier, which is also the way André Morell, playing the defense counsel, pronounces it.

Some months ago, I began featuring early publicity photos that had been taken after the studio had approved the second pilot and before the filming of the first episode. The last set involved Spock holding graham condensers and other pieces of laboratory glassware, suggestive of his role as Science Officer.  Here is a grouping of other photos from that time period, this time centering on Kirk and Spock standing in front of a radar vector screen, which was still being used in airplane navigation. A 23rd century version had not been created for the series yet, but this gave the public a familiar background for these two future “astronauts.”
Tumblr media
As with the previous photos of Mr. Spock, these were also used for various forms of advertising and media. Some showed up on local TV guides, for example.
Tumblr media
One of Mr. Spock’s was the main image on one of Gold Key’s Star Trek comics - with a green filter, no less.
Tumblr media
A later use of the first Mr. Spock photo was a copy of a sketch done by Virgil Finlay that was used to illustrate a poem by Dorothy Jones in an early fanzine, Worlds of If, (pp 48-49, Vol. 18, No. 9, September 1968).
Tumblr media
This was the original pen and ink Finlay sketch. Again, compare it to the actual photo where Spock is standing in front of the radar vector screen. Virgil Finlay was a well known illustrator for a wide number of pulp magazines, mostly in the sci-fi, horror, or fantasy genre.  The drawing was also used in several other formats. It appeared in The Monster Times at least once as well as for the cover of a 1972 mini-convention magazine, a postcard, and posters by two companies.
Tumblr media
So, what’s this photo doing in this grouping? Well, it DOES have a navigational grid, doesn’t it? lol All kidding aside, some of you may have recognized Leonard Nimoy in his role as Commander Phil Kettenring in the TV movie Assault on the Wayne. I threw this one in just to see if you were paying attention, but there actually are some interesting bits of trivia in this movie. Nimoy is reunited with the actor who played Alden, his communications officer on the second pilot, Lloyd Haynes. He played Lt. Dave Burston in this film.  Other familiar TOS names are William Windom (Commodore Decker in “The Doomsday Machine” ) as Captain Frank Reardon and Malachi Throne (Commodore Mendez in “The Menagerie” and the voice of The Keeper in “The Cage” ) as Dr. Dykers. Less familiar TOS figures are stuntman Charlie Picerni who was a stuntman/actor in the part of a security guard in “Day of the Dove,” and supervising sound editor Douglas Grindstaff who served first as the sounds effect editor and later as the sound editor for nearly the entire run of TOS.  There are more of these publicity photos with modern day props and the in-between costumes but we’ll save them for future articles.

AU-gust Details
Okay, so, I'm planning on doing AU-gust this year! But here's the dealio. I'm not going to try to make a post every day, because I'm going to be drawing. That way, if I fall behind or something of that nature, then I can draw extra on some day and publish 7 drawings all at once. It's just something that'll be easier on me, y'know?
Another thing is, I'm not always the best at keeping up with these things. I'm good for the first week, maybe a bit more, but it's sort of rare for me to do these things that last a whole month. But, then again, I've only ever done it with writing, so maybe with drawing it'll be different!
I'm also arthritic, and I feel the need to say this because my arthritis fucks up my fingers and wrists real damn bad. So I may have to take a day or so off. If that day happens to be day 7, 14, 21, 28, or 31, I'll post the pictures I have so far, and continue on with the week.
But, I have everything planned out, and I'm keeping with a common theme of Evan Peters characters. Why? Because that's my current hyperfixation and you can pry most of those characters from my cold dead hands. some of the others i'd sell to satan for a corn chip
Anyway, below the cut are the characters and what prompts their matched up with! Some of these are subject to change, and all of the characters were matched up with random prompts. Some fit better than others, so if some of these sound wacky, then my apologies.)
Todd Haynes (Kickass) - Ancient Gods
Pre-Death Kyle Spencer (American Horror Story) - Exotic Vacation
Jesse Varon (Invasion) - Hipsters
Peter Maximoff (X-men) - Dancing
Luke Cooper (The Office) - Sci-Fi
Post-Death Kyle Spencer (American Horror Story) - Gaming
Rory Monahan (American Horror Story) - Beekeeper
Jack Daniels (One Tree Hill) - Character Swap
Cooper Day (The Days) - Roommates
Malcolm Gallant (American Horror Story) - Utopia
Jeff Pfister (American Horror Story) - Summer Camp
Colin Zabel (Mare of Easttown) - Fairy Tale
Evan Peters - Bad Horror Movie
Charles Decker (Safelight) - Chef
Kit Walker (American Horror Story) - Crossover
Ralph Bohner (WandaVision) - Hippies
Tate Langdon (American Horror Story) - Wings
Kai Anderson (American Horror Story) - Pirates
Clay Walton (The Lazarus Effect) - Daemons
Charlie Hillridge (Criminal Minds) - Dystopia
Rachel (Gardens of the Night) - Soulmates
Donny (The Good Doctor) - Theatre
Jimmy Darling (American Horror Story) - Historical Fantasy
James Patrick March (American Horror Story) - Gangs
Stan Bowes (Pose) - Time Travel
Russell Hayes (Sleepover) - School of Magic
Seth Wosmer (Phil of the Future) - Royalty
Alex (Adult World) - Werewolf
Warren Lipka (American Animals) - Fake Relationship
Edward Mott (American Horror Story) - The Day The World Died
Jay Bahadur (Pirates of Somalia) - Mix Two Past AUs
So, yeah! There's a brief idea of what to expect! Of course, the AU-gust prompts came with 3 jokers, so I may mix some stuff up last minute if I'm having too much trouble trying to come up with something, y'know? Like, I'm already a bit stumped for what to do for tomorrow, but I do have a brief idea.
See you guys in nearly a week! :D

Jurassic World OCs – Ship Tests
1 – Tanner Kane x Christina James (Willa Fitzgerald) or Leora Malcolm (Emilia Clarke)
2 – Decker Haynes x Leora Malcolm (Emilia Clarke), Clarke Grant (Alicia Vikander), Etta Lockwood (Margot Robbie), or Tate Holmes (Brie Larson)
3 – Everest Ledger x Clarke Grant (Alicia Vikander), Etta Lockwood (Margot Robbie), Leora Malcolm (Emilia Clarke) or Tate Holmes (Brie Larson)
(the situation is this: leaning towards Tanner x Leora; want to use Decker with Clarke & Tate; want to use Everest with everyone, and I can't decide if I'm willing to use Everest in more than one story or not — if I do use him more than once then I think I'd do Decker with Clarke, Everest with Tate & Etta, but ugh decisions)

Jurassic Park OC Masterlist
Tumblr media
Name: Adelyn Mitchell
Story: Death Defying Act
Era: Jurassic World
Face Claim: Alba Baptista
Love Interest: Kai Forrest
When Adelyn Mitchell was two, her parents decided that having another kid would be the solution to their fighting.  He wasn’t.  When she was seven, they decided to try again.  Still no luck.  And so Adelyn found herself raising her two younger brothers, being both a mom and a big sister for their entire lives.  Which is why she found herself spending her last winter break of high school going to Jurassic World.   Instead of working on her college application essay - topic tbd - she was going to be stuck in Central America with her neglectful Aunt, making absolutely no progress on her essay.  And then the Indominus Rex breaks out of its enclosure, and tries to eat her baby brothers.
Tumblr media
Name: Christina James
Story: The One Where Henry Wu Ruins Everything
Era: Jurassic World
Face Claim: Willa Fitzgerald
Love Interest: Owen Grady
Get work experience, they said, it’ll be fun, they said.  Well, fresh out of college, with a double major in paleontology and marine biology and a minor in public relations, interning at Jurassic World should have been the most fun Christina James has ever had.  Being hired full time and getting her own exhibit should have been even more fun.  And it would have been, if Henry fucking Wu hadn’t created the Archaeornithomimus— sorry, the Indominus Rex—and doomed them all.

Name: Dalia Malcolm
Story: A Dinosaur Ate My Homework
Era: Jurassic Park
Face Claim: Alexandra Daddario
Dalia Malcolm wasn’t technically invited to Isla Nublar, but when her older brother got invited, he passed it along.  Dalia had just recently graduated from Oxford with a degree in palaeontology, and was just starting an honours research project on how dinosaurs would acclimate to the modern world–how to acclimate the modern world to dinosaurs, technically–and Ian convinced John Hammond that it would look good for him to be using his project as an educational resource as well as a theme park, so there she was on a helicopter sitting across from her personal hero, Alan Grant.  It should have been the trip of a lifetime, if only her project wasn’t trying to eat her–that was why she chose to study extinct predators in the first place, thank you very much.

Tumblr media
Name: Mackenzie Grady
Story: Seasons Change
Era: Jurassic World
Face Claim: Millie Bobby Brown
The best part about turning eighteen, if you were to ask Mackenzie Grady, is that her parents could no longer control her.  And if she wanted to take a gap year to live on Isla Nublar with her brother Owen, well, she would. Summer was incredible; she got to run some tours, hang out at the different exhibits whenever she wanted, even see the labs.  Fall was even better; she had finally shed the name Mackenzie, was known almost exclusively as “Grady” or “Baby Grady”, and she even got to help out with the exhibits. So when winter rolled around, and Claire Dearing asked her to “hang out with” her nephews while they visited, she was beyond excited–until her home turned into a war zone and she was fighting for her life against the animals she’d grown to love.

Name: Reese Masrani

Reese Masrani had been through a lot more before her eighteenth birthday than most people went through in their entire lives.  But where three kidnappings before her eighteenth birthday had made her paranoid, it was her never ending boredom that turned her into a part-time survivalist.
But Christmas was supposed to be a break from all of it.  All she had to worry about were her monthly rounds of employee meetings, organizing the staff holiday party, and spending an uninterrupted week with her dad.  Still, when Claire Dearing asks her to show her nephews around the island, she takes it in stride.  But when a dinosaur breaks out of her enclosure and turns the entire island into a war zone, well, that might throw a wrench in her holiday plans.

Earnings Call Notes: Retail Wasteland
Tumblr media
Each week we read dozens of transcripts from earnings calls and presentations as part of our investment process. Below is a weekly post which contains some of the most important quotes about the economy and industry trends from those transcripts. Click here to receive these posts weekly via email.
Earnings season is wrapping up and retailers are the last to report. The environment was described as a "perfect storm" and "hyper-competitive" with no signs of slowing down. Retailers are trying to move into omni-channel and putting on a good face, but "the definition of loyalty in the retail business for the consumer is the absence of the better alternative." Consumers will shop wherever they can find the lowest prices at the greatest convenience. At the moment Amazon is the elephant in the room.
Next week begins the summer doldrums for earnings, so we'll likely take the next two weeks off. Be back again in September.
The Macro Outlook:
We are beginning to see some inflation in food
"after several quarters of lower commodity costs, we are beginning to see some inflation. We anticipate this will curtail some of the hypercompetitive discounting we have seen in recent quarters." --Jack in the Box CEO Lenny Comma (Restaurants)
The transition has been a little more rapid than normal
"the transition from deflation to inflation has been a little more rapid than normal, and there are certainly some categories where we are seeing more than 2% to 3% inflation...I wouldn’t say we are seeing anything out there today that would be overly difficult for our customers to pass along." --Sysco CEO Bill Delaney (Food Distributor)
Millenials are becoming key decision makers in businesses
"Most of our chefs and operators in our customer’s kitchen are millennials. They want different type of equipment." --Middleby CEO Selim Bassoul (Kitchen Equipment)
Financials:
Home Depot feels good about housing markets
"You know we continually look at months of supply, there is 4.3 months of supply in the market of housing availability against a historical norm of six, that clearly is helping to drive improvement in home value appreciation...So, we see this housing favorability continuing as we look forward. And I think the watch out for us is, you wouldn’t want to see affordability become an issue, but that at this point doesn’t seem to be a concern for us at all." --Home Depot CEO Craig Menear (Home Improvement)
Mall rents are falling
"we think real estate prices a couple years from now are going to be less expensive than they are today. We’re starting to we’re seeing that as we renegotiate leases or relocate stores. The rents are coming down in all but the true A malls. So, if you take a look at the true A malls we actually think rents in those malls might actually go up...because they’re going to be in such high demand" --Dicks CEO Ed Stack (Sporting Goods)
Tumblr media
Consumer:
The retail industry is in a perfect storm
"The retail market is currently in flux. The environment is highly competitive and dynamic...It’s a perfect storm right now" --Dicks CEO Ed Stack (Sporting Goods)
CEOs are trying to stay optimistic
"I also know that we operate in an environment of intense and disruptive competition, and that our customer has more shopping options than ever, and we need to provide her with a compelling and a unique proposition. So winning in this environment requires us to act with a great sense of urgency to make changes in how we operate and to move faster. And as we do this, I am confident that Macy’s will win again." --Macy's CEO Jeffrey Gennette (Dept Store)
They argue that omni-channel is essential
"The customer is clearly telling us that brick-and-mortar retail continues to be an essential part of the shopping experience and certainly when it is executed right with the right values. All of this gives us confidence in our long-term global store growth potential." --TJX CEO Ernie Herrman (Off-Price)
Out of sight out of mind
"there is an impact on a market when you have fewer stores in it and share of mind is therefore decreased, and as a result, those areas where we’ve closed stores, the rate of growth in our omnichannel business has been a little less...Everything that we’ve learned from that store closure pilot has been that reinforcing the importance of a great physical footprint. And we’ve said over and over again, and we have seen nothing that doesn’t support this. In fact, I think the thesis is growing stronger." --Kohls CEO Kevin Mansell (Dept Store)
But everyone is trying to match Amazon
"I think we are in the time of hyper competition. People are out there trying to get market share. They are doing things that one typically wouldn’t do in a business. I guess, the elephant in the room there, you know who it is, is doing an awful lot of things without regards of the bottom line and is getting rewarded for it. And so there are an awful lot of other people trying to do the same thing. So yes, I think there is margin opportunity. I think we could get there, but I also am very, very aware of the hypercompetitive space that we are in." --Urban Outfitters CEO Richard Hayne (Apparel)
The price competition is impossible to avoid
"We tried to not be promotional. We didn’t want to be the price leaders in the industry. And as things got competitive and somewhat unpredictable, the consumer told us that they felt that we weren’t priced competitively in the marketplace." --Dicks CEO Ed Stack (Sporting Goods)
Retailers are doubling down on promotions
"when you look at the marketing strategy...number one, we’re going to remain very promotional. And what we’ve spent a lot of time on is reducing the overlap of promotions, reducing the amount of overlap of discounts on top of each other. But we’re doing that all the way through the back half and that really is a big focus of ours." --Macy's CEO Jeffrey Gennette (Dept Store)
Consumers are only as loyal as your prices
"We didn’t start the promotion, but we can’t sit around and pretend it doesn’t happen. We need to engage in that. And our customers have told us, you need to engage here in today’s marketplace...I’m a firm believer that the definition of loyalty in the retail business for the consumer is the absence of the better alternative." --Dicks CEO Ed Stack (Sporting Goods)
The competition shows no signs of slowing down
"The pace of change in the consumer and competitive environment doesn’t show any signs of slowing down." --Target CEO Brian Cornell (Big Box Retail)
If anyone can challenge Amazon, it should be Walmart
"We continue to gain traction in e-commerce with Walmart U.S. GMV up 67%...we continue our transformation to become more of a digital enterprise that moves with speed and agility...We’ve seen strong results from the rollout of online grocery...Marc Lore and the team delivered another quarter of robust topline growth" --Walmart CEO Douglas McMillon (Big Box Retail)
Tumblr media
Technology:
Home Depot spends half its advertising budget on digital
"Our overall advertising spend is up, lower single digits, but as we’ve essentially made more significant pivot to digital marketing it’s over half our marketing right now. That’s a medium that you can get good insight on the return on your spend and as Craig said, the team just done a great job continuing to increase the return on that spend, so leveraging that low single digit to a much more productive return on overall ad spend" --Home Depot EVP Ted Decker (Home Improvement)
Apple products sold well at Target
"on the Apple comments, they weren’t just driven by tablet, they are driven across the board in categories. And we had really strong showing in Q2 on the iWatch which we worked with Apple on clearly. And we have a lot in our plans for Q3 and Q4 with potential new launches as I have outlined." --Target CEO Brian Cornell (Big Box Retail)
Online video has tailwinds to revenue, but headwinds to profitability
"more and more people are watching online video at longer and longer time, on a daily basis...and at the same time, advertising revenue has been increasing, and there is also an increasing willingness from consumers to pay. So, the subscription number as well as revenue has been increasing quite rapidly. On the other hand, the flip side of this is the cost of content has been increasing, even faster. So, what we see is that over time, we believe the content will continue to increase, but the rates would probably be lower. And the subscription, as we continue to increase, would deliver higher revenue per active user. So, we will get closer to a more equilibrium between cost and revenue at some point in time. But I think unfortunately at this point in time, the net loss of the business is still increasing." --Tencent President Martin Lau (Chinese Internet)
Neural Nets are improving at a double exponential rate
"A neural net in terms of complexity is approximately – not quite, but approximately doubling every year. And this is one of the exciting things about artificial intelligence. In no time in my history of looking at computers in the last 35 years have we ever seen a double exponential where the GPU computing model, our GPUs are essentially increasing in performance by approximately three times each year...And...on top of it, the neural network architecture and the algorithms that are being developed are improving in accuracy by about twice each year...And so you’ve got these two exponentials that are happening, and it’s pretty exciting. That’s one of the reasons why AI is moving so fast." --Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang (GPUs)
The next revolution of AI is at the edge
"The next revolution of AI will be at the edge, and the most visible impactful evidence will be the autonomous vehicle. Our strategy is to build a ground-up deep learning platform for self-driving cars, and that has put us in pole position to lead the charge" --Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang (GPUs)
Industrials:
All in all there was good industrial activity in the quarter
"positives around oil and gas...infrastructure, aggregates, cement positives; seeing positives in machinery OEMs, transportation equipment and paper and food...all-in-all, we saw good activity in the quarter" --Applied Industrial Technology CEO Neil Schrimsher (Distributor)
Materials, Energy:
Dry Bulk shippers are starting to feel more positive
"We’re generally positive about the market from the second half 2017 onwards and we believe that every subsequent year will fare better than the year before...environmental regulations will thereafter not only contribute to a transition towards a cleaner environment, but it will also assist shipping in reducing vessel supply and will therefore lead us to better markets as of 2020 onwards." --Star Bulk Carriers CEO Petros Pappas (Dry Bulk)
Miscellaneous Nuggets of Wisdom:
Take care of your customer on their terms
"What we’ve learned is a customer comes with a return, that’s their errand they have to do, and the more efficient, the faster we are in doing that, the more free time we’re giving back to the customer. And oftentimes, they take that free time and start shopping. So we’re really looking to take care of the customer on their terms, and if they have a great experience in our store with a return, we certainly believe that ends up in good news for us." --Nordstrom President Erik Nordstrom (Dept Store)
