EVENT TIMELINE

IC Timeline: Canonically, the snowstorm will suddenly pass through New York on Tuesday, February 1st.

OOC Timeline: Members will have from February 1st through February 8th to post their initial starters around the snowstorm. After 2/8, no new starters can be posted, but writers are free to continue their event thread until it's conclusion. An announcement will be made on both days when the event has started and ended.

EVENT DETAILS

Now that the pairings are announced, members are encouraged to reach out to the mun of their paired partner to plan out what will occur between the characters. Members are free to take liberties with the snowstorm backdrop to create whatever situational atmosphere they'd like - they can be as comedic, lowkey, absurd, mundane, adrenaline-seeking, or subtle as you'd like! If you're interested in more concrete details prior to the weather report on Tuesday, the 2014 Gulf Coast Winter Storm serves as a reference point!

Pairing Threads:

The primary reason behind the event is to encourage character interaction between characters who may not have engaged with each other before. As such, character threads are highly encouraged between the assigned pairing. Members can choose if they'd prefer to have their threads set during the action of the snowstorm (ex. thread of two character chatting while stuck in an ATM vestibule together until the power comes back on) or after the snowstorm (ex. first thread are characters running into each other two days after being stuck together in the ATM vestibule during the snowstorm).

Threads have no set length, neither in writing nor in IC time. The encounter between characters can be as brief as twenty minutes or as long as an overnighter, while threads can be full on multi-paras or simple gif conversations.

Additional Threads:

Members are also free to take advantage of the setting to engage in other snowstorm related threads during this time period, and are not limited to only engaging with their assigned partner. Other plotted threads and open starters are welcome! (ex. after being freed from the ATM vestibule, your character briefly seeks warmth at a nearby grocery store with other patrons, where an open starter may be set - or they return home to their roommate for a closed starter!)

SAN FRANCISCO — Dr. Paul Turek was on his way to speak to employees at a cryptocurrency investment firm one recent afternoon about a growing anxiety for the men in the office: what’s going on with their sperm?

Is there enough? Is the existing supply satisfactory? Are we men enough?

“They’re worried, right?” Dr. Turek said. “And we’re O.K. with the worry.”

Last summer, a meta-analysis of 185 studies in which semen was collected over the past 40 years indicated that sperm concentration seemed to have consistently and remarkably declined in the course of a generation.

Different clusters of people — urologists, anthropologists, men’s rights activists and start-up founders — became quietly concerned about the state of sperm. Quiet, probably, because Americans are more used to talking about women and fecundity. And also quiet because there has not been much research aimed at discovering if anything is actually happening.

And this part particularly stood out:

Daryush Valizadeh, who runs The Return of Kings, a men’s rights site, called the situation “a biological crisis” and one that women struggle to understand.

“Tell your editor to stop being an idiot and reassign the article to a man,” he wrote in a direct message on Twitter. “Then get in touch with me.”

I never thought I’d see the New York Times quoting Roosh V., but this one not only quotes him (and what a quote!), but Rollo Tomassi and /r/TheRedPill as well.

But there’s much more to the article, and it’s worth reading.

A collaboration between researchers in the United States, Israel, Brazil, Denmark, and Spain, it opened a huge conversation about sperm and what might be happening to it.

And then, in terms of research, not much happened.

“The National Institutes of Health has been focused on males for so long, but reproduction was never considered a male problem,” said Shanna Swan, one of the study’s authors and a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai’s department of environmental medicine and public health. Of the research community in general, she said, “They don’t want to know what they’re going to find.”

“It’s an area that makes people uncomfortable. It’s about sex. It’s about men,” Dr. Swan said. “You can get a lot further if you have a nice finding on autism or obesity.”

The study’s lead author, Dr. Hagai Levine, a former Israeli military epidemiologist now with Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Public Health, said sperm decline shows no sign of slowing down and stigma around male fertility could threaten the human species.

“This is a symbol of our inability to look at the future of mankind, and for what?” Dr. Levine said. “We may be like the Titanic approaching an iceberg.”

Dr. Levine said that it seems exposure to pesticides, obesity and smoking could contribute to low sperm count.

He also suggested something more complex. “Social factors could definitely influence this,” he said. “We are animals. The social rank, the socioeconomic position, is important.”

There are also a few studies that show there may be decreasing testosterone levels over the last 20 years, and this trend line may be related to sperm counts, Dr. Levine said.

“There’s no funding. There’s none,” said Dr. Sarah Vij, who specializes in male infertility and andrology at the Cleveland Clinic. “When we try to develop a study, there just are not a lot of foundations out there looking to fund male fertility projects.”

One group of researchers — Janice L. Bailey, Jacquetta Trasler and Sarah Kimmins — is working on a study to look at environmental contaminants and sperm in Greenland and South Africa, as well as lifestyle factors like body mass index in Canada.

“Oddly enough there’s a lot of women in the field,” Dr. Bailey said. “We sometimes call ourselves Gals for Guys.”

Dr. Bailey began studying human sperm after working on farm animal reproduction and noticing that almost all interventions focused on the female animals.

“Whenever there was a problem, they always blamed the female, and I said, ‘For crying out loud, we have to do something to the male,’” she said.

On The Society and Lost: Parallels and Contrasts

So, I think we can all agree that The Society has some major Lost/Lord of the Flies vibes. It is a YA, sure, but it is done right.

Why do I say that? People aren’t just like ‘Hey we’re free, let’s all kill each other lol’, they miss their home and their parents, they miss normalcy, and the only people that have no problem with killing others are Dewey and Campbell. One is a school shooting waiting to happen and the other one is a confirmed psychopath. So it gives it depth. Allie doesn’t want to lead, she is forced to. She just wants to be a kid, as most of them do. Lexie wants to stop doing things Allie’s way, but much like most teenagers she doesn’t know how to actually improve things or make them different, she is just a teenager with a grudge towards Allie much like any of us would have against our parents when they make us do anything.

The Guard gets a bit power crazy, sure. But it’s not until months have gone by, and they are all starting to lose it at that point.Everyone is going stir crazy, they don’t know what they want but they know they don’t want to keep living like that. None of them understand it’s what they need to do to survive. Because they are teenagers, and they are lazy and susceptible to anyone that shares similar feelings or thoughts.

How this relates to Lost? I’ll tell you. What I loved about Lost was how even in that unreal situation, they all acted like real, actual people. They panicked, they struggled, they just wanted to go back. And that is one of the main similarities The Society and Lost share. The other, is the fantastical side. In Lost, their crash was not really an accident as much as “the Island’s mystical qualities” ahem ahem, let’s be real, Jacob. In The Society, they are not in a town that looks exactly like theirs by mere coincidence, something powerful put them there, most likely Pfeiffer. And most of all, in both shows, the characters are stranded, left to their own devices and with a couple hundred people to take care of and try to keep alive.

But what I like most, is how they contrast one another. In Lost, Jack is a natural leader, people take to him like flies and no matter what he has them do people agree with him and genuinely like him. Compare that to both Cassandra and Allie, though they are technically (though not really) chosen by the people, nobody seems to actually like them as leaders, even though they are doing what needs to be done, just like Jack, people don’t appreciate their efforts at all and think they are wrong a lot of the time.

Then we have the “antagonist”. And I use quotation marks because I will be using that term pretty loosely. Right now, I’ll use it to refer to Lost’s first season antagonist Sawyer. In the first couple of seasons Sawyer was a reckless character, if anyone was giving Jack trouble if was Sawyer or Kate. Mostly Sawyer though. He wanted to have things, just for himself. And at the beginning he hoarded stuff, even the things that weren’t his to begin with. Sound like anyone we know? That’s right. One of Allie’s rivals, Harry, more specifically.

There is only one season of The Society, so this could turn out to be a parallel rather than a contrast, but as of right now, Sawyer is a beloved character with some of the best character development in TV history. With a backstory that truly gets you to understand his selfishness and sympathize with him. With Harry however, we see him be selfish for no reason. He just wants to keep his stuff, and not work. He doesn’t have anything to contribute either, and he knows it from the very first episode. In the only season we have seen him so far, instead of developing, he regresses. He is so spoiled that working makes him depressed, which okay, is a mental illness, not his fault. But taking into account everything we know about him, if he had everything he wanted, he would not be depressed. And we clearly see that when everyone leaves his house and he is unbelievably happy. He cares about no one, and I hope that changes, because there is a real place for growth with his character.

Then I want to compare our very own psychopath to another main character Lost. They may be very different but it’s part of why I wanted to write this. On The Society’s side we have Campbell, said psychopath, who we are made to distrust from very early on. He doesn’t really do much in terms of villains, yet whenever he is around you just feel uneasy. You know nothing good can come from him. This may be a stretch, but he reminds me of Ben Linus. A man that doesn’t truly care what is wrong or right, he just wants to live and he doesn’t give a shit about anyone else. Except his (kidnapped) daughter, whereas Campbell has Elle. Who he didn’t outright kidnap, but has there by force. Ben killed a LOT of people in his life. And Campbell may have only killed animals, but I know that won’t be true for long.

A parallel I couldn’t ignore was Claire and Becca. Both pregnant, with no choice on the matter of parenthood. Claire was meant to give the baby in adoption and while it is never outright said, it is implied that Becca would’ve aborted given the chance. Or at least gone the adoption route, as she did not want to be a mother. Yet they are forced to give birth in the worst circumstances possible, in a place with already limited resources. And both of them have someone there with them at all times, Charlie for Claire and Sam for Becca. They may not be the biological fathers, but they are the parents of those babies as much as the mothers.

Now, do I think this means that they will all inevitably die in New Ham. Not really, I mean, they might. But I think they will return to their world, but maybe not all of them will. Much like in Lost, where only some of the survivors return to civilization. Maybe they do return afterwards, to save the rest. Or maybe the parallels and contrast don’t matter (most likely). But I wanted, nay, needed to talk about both of these amazing shows, and how much they remind me of each other.

Rachel Eliot had a plan. She would continue to date Grizz until he graduated, just a few weeks away. But then the smell came, and left, and came back again, and then the buses came. The busses took them away, and brought them back, and everyone was gone. West Ham was empty, shut off from whatever outside world might have still existed, just a couple hundred teenagers with no way of calling for help. And suddenly, Rachel needed a new plan. Adapt. Survive. Keep everyone alive. Protect them, no matter the cost.

Rachel Eliot had a plan. The busses came and left and took that plan with them. But Rachel was an artist, a writer, a survivor. And most importantly, she would do whatever it took to protect the people she loved.

Lucy Lawless On My Favorite Murder: “It’s Not Exactly Miss Marple”

Lucy Lawless’ legion of fans have watched her search for redemption as an ancient Greek warrior princess in Xena, deceive and seduce her way to power as Lucretia in Spartacus, witch her way through Salem as Countess Marburg, and hunting down Ash in Ash vs. the Evil Dead. But while she may be best known for her roles in science fiction and fantasy, she’s also excellent at bringing murders to justice in My Life Is Murder as Alexa Crowe, a retired police officer who continues solving mysteries.

Despite Alexa’s former profession, the show shares more with Murder, She Wrote than police procedurals. Or, perhaps “Murder She Wrote crossed with something a bit sassy, because Alexa actually gets laid on occasion, so it’s not exactly Miss Marple,” Lucy Lawless says of the show. In contrast to the more historical and fantastic roles Lawless has played in the past, Alexa is “a modern urban woman who can wear elastic and use zips instead of being laced and hammered into an outfit every morning.” Her modernity and her sexuality are unapologetically part of the narrative of the story—as are her relationships, despite the character professing that she doesn’t work in teams.

In fact, relationships are core to the storytelling, which is another factor Lawless believes is a clear contrast to the police procedural format. “We’re not cleaving to the world of police or the justice system,” she says. “It’s justice in the real world, and it has different payoff. It’s more emotional.”

Discussing the series with Den of Geek, Lawless explains the feeling of having a compact with the viewer that some things will be the same every week, and viewers and depend on that. “Our show is full of color,” she describes. “The city is a beautiful character that you’re going to fall in love with. There’s people you want to hang out with. And at the end of the day, goodness and justice win. That’s our deal.” That sense of justice, and that feeling that as each episode ends all is right with the world, is something that Lawless embraces as a contrast to the the news and a world facing ongoing complications of the pandemic. “I think we’re all exhausted,” she says. The show is “a little bit of balm for a moment—a psychic holiday.”

The show itself did face some complications due to COVID, which led to the second season being moved to Auckland, New Zealand, where both Lawless and Alexa are from. Melbourne, the setting for the first season, was hit very hard by the pandemic. When Lawless initially pitched the idea of moving the series to Auckland, she worried they wouldn’t be able to tonally deliver the same show, especially with an all new crew and different producers. “But we obviously migrated some key players—the head writer, the executive producers, and Ebony Vagulans, my beloved, extraordinary co-star,” Lawless describes. “The rest just fell into place, so it very much feels like the first season, but in a new, glittering environment.” In fact, it worked so well that she says confidently, “We could film every season in a different location!” But while it might be fun to continue moving locations, Lawless also comments, “I love to be able to shoot in my city and show our fans that. It’s a bit of armchair tourism for people.”

Aside from Vagulans—a newcomer in the first season about whom Lawless says enthusiastically, “What a discovery!”—viewers of My Life Is Murder can prepare for a full slate of big names to appear in season two. William Shatner, Martin Henderson from Virgin River, Michelle Ang of Fear the Walking Dead, and others are all on the guest star roster. Lawless hopes that viewers will be excited “seeing these people pop up in unexpected places. It’s part of the DNA of the show that you have this. It’s quite a tall order if you’re in a little country at the bottom of the world–how do we find people that Americans and Brits and people in Finland will recognize? It was kind of a magical synchronicity allowed that to happen.”

One guest star is likely to have huge appeal for Xena fans, especially as hopes of a rumored reboot of the series were dashed several years ago. The season two finale of My Life Is Murder features Renée O’Connor, “my dear friend and colleague … who played Gabrielle on Xena for all those years,” Lawless reminisces. “That was so blessed, because at the end of a season, you’re really burnt out. You’ve been there every single day, from morning til night, and to have the comfort and the excitement of your beloved oldest friend in the business come on—it was good for my soul. We’ve been wanting to do this [reunion] for the longest time,” Lawless says.

One co-star who isn’t returning for season two is Captain Thunderbolt, Alexa’s cat, who—in addition to appearing on the live action series—had his own animated spinoff. Series creator Claire Tomkin “knew that cats are important,” Lawless reveals. The cartoon “was a way of making the show bigger without more stress on my schedule.” The cat who played Captain Thunderbolt also had a misadventure during the filming of season one. As Lawless recounts:

Claire rang me one day in Australia [and said], “Oh my God, Lucy, I hate to tell you this, but they’ve lost the cat.” I just cracked up laughing. It’s one of those times when the world is … in a tough situation generally, and we could never have foreseen that the cat wranglers would take the cat on holiday with them. In Australia you stop to go to the bathroom on this 400 km road from watering hole to watering hole across the desert, and the cat will jump out, and you’ve lost the cat.

With the first season still filming, it could have been a disaster, but miraculously the handlers, “these uber cat ladies” as Lawless describes them, were able to return to the same place three days later with a little dog, who located poor Captain Thuderbolt.

Lawless didn’t participate in the casting process for her feline costar—“Unlike with humans, I feel like if I’m there, the cats get way too nervous and can’t do their bit,” she says—but she is a cat person. (She’s also a dog owner; currently, she’s down from four pets to one German Shepherd. “I’ve become a dog lady,” she says. “Who knew?”) After a number of auditions, the cast welcomed a cat named Zeppelin as Alexa’s cat for season two.

While viewers will be able to tour Auckland in the series premier of My Life Is Murder season two on August 30, Lawless won’t be able to return home from Los Angles for a bit, due to New Zealand’s recent lockdown. But she’s not worried. “I’m busy,” she professes. “If I get home before Christmas that would be a miracle. If I get home by March, that would be a win.” And if she gets homesick, she can always tune in to see Alexa Crowe’s adventures in her hometown.
