Succession 01x05 and 01x06 Roman-Thoughts:
So despite the dominant Roman scene we got at the end of 01x04 we still get a little nugget of the Roman who's not Into It with Grace's "every 6 months" comment.
Absolutely seeing how any time you say anything to Roman that is Absolutely the Truth about himself he doesn't want to hear it and just tells that person to fuck off and walks away. Because God Forbid Roman actually deals with his shit like a mature adult.
---2.5 - I know that coming up(?) is a moment between Roman and Shiv about therapy (because I think everyone goes at one point?) but I really find it hard to believe that Roman and Therapy go well together given his propensity for not talking about anything serious related to his behaviors, especially if those behaviors are "negative" or perceived that way.
Got a little peek into Roman's brain with the "I'm not smart but I'm not dumb" and "I don't have the attention span" and "this is the most important time of my life and I'm thinking about six other things right now" statement. Do we have some ADHD-Roman?
I would have LOVED to see Roman's face in response to Logan hitting Iverson. Obviously I have been spoiled and know that Logan physically abused Roman but from the gif-sets I've seen Roman plays this off as Not A Big Deal and makes excuses for it. So I really would have loved to see how Roman reacted to seeing it happen to his nephew.
Roman absolutely flew into detachment when Grace left. He broke up with her, and they gave each other the cold shoulder the rest of the night (especially Grace's bite at him while saying Thanks), but when she was actually leaving Roman just straight up ignored her. He was physically present in the room but mentally and emotionally he was Not.
I see you Roman-Barely-Eats-Roy. With the picking at his stomach in the earlier episode, declining food when au devours were brought around passing over his plate completely at first during Thanksgiving dinner and only taking food after Grace. Taking small bites. When having dinner with Lawrence he was shown to put a small bite of food in his mouth like, once. During the meeting at the diner about the Vote of Confidence he ordered only a black coffee (which if I remember correctly this is actually the SECOND time on screen he was ordering food / offered food and only ordered/accepted a black coffee).
I know Kieran said that he saw Roman as having some sort of disordered eating but I wasn't sure how much he actually got to work it into the on-screen portrayal or how soon this occurred. So I'm kinda seeing, at the moment, that clearly he worked it in.
ALSO: to some psych diagnosis - I've seen Roman later on makes a "joke" about having borderline personality disorder and I am looking for evidence of it (because maybe I am biased with my own diagnosis) but having seen that I keep looking at him through that lens and I have been perceiving that his dumping Grace was a reaction to seeing her watching the movie. I see it as him feeling betrayed, maybe also embarrassed, and that caused him to split and therefore any love/feelings he had for her turned into hurt and he pushed her away by breaking things off with her. And his ignoring her leaving was absolutely him shutting down to block out any regret he may have been feeling or any further hurt.
And one more thing: As much as Roman talked about voting Logan out I knew the SECOND Logan decided to stay in the room during the vote he was going to buckle. I could also see the nervousness in him when Kendall wasn't there to help act as a buffer/support for him. Roman was absolutely squirming that whole time and when it came to be his time to vote, even though he did make a nervous attempt at sticking with his original vote, when Logan snapped at him he tucked tail. The shame and fear was written all over his face. When his turn came that was no longer an adult sitting in that seat but a child.

your recent succession meta post is interesting bc i always feel like kendall gets babygirled/woobifyed way more than shiv and roman lol. especially on twitter/reddit at least, roman is often afforded little nuance regarding the whole mencken situation and “but fascist” is kind of used as a gotcha @ anyone who dares suggest he’s even on par with shiv and kendall, let alone not as bad as either of them (which is not how i feel mind you lol.) and then shiv is just so demonised and arguably less humanised and sympathetic. personally i think it’s a pointless argument and they’re all bad but all have good in them. i do think it’s p much canon that roman was hit the most though so im interested in your pov there? we only see logan hit roman, and it’s brought up by both shiv and kendall and made out to be something specific to him
(x)
Oh, I definitely think Shiv gets the worst treatment and is regarded with the least nuance, but honestly, while that's forever disappointing, it's not surprising. Having survived many a fandom (including Breaking Bad, which was I think one of the worst for it's treatment of the women characters), it's the status quo and an indication of broader social views of women that rob them of agency and interiority. Gosh, even Kieran's not immune to it given the way he spoke about Willa and Connor's relationship and Justine Lupe's very elegant response to that. It's not necessarily malicious, it just shows how pervasive those sorts of views are.
And I'm sure it's different on different social media platforms. I'm not really on twitter or reddit anymore at all, so can't speak to them, but it doesn't surprise me that there are spaces where Roman is afforded less nuance. They're all complicated characters, and like I said in my original post, it does seem to be swings and roundabouts with the way characters are treated. At the end of the day, they're all deeply flawed and complex characters and they're all compelling across the board.
Re: the abuse - all of the Roy cast actors have talked about the fact that Logan hit all four of the kids, some probably less than others, but still - all four. We've only ever seen him hit Roman the once, but we've seen him come at Kendall and have to be pulled back, and I've talked about it in another post, but the blocking of the way Logan hit Iverson with Kendall out of focus behind his son to me read as a flashback without using a literal flashback.
Personally, I do think Logan probably hit Roman the most (although I actually don't think physical violence was especially common - Logan's rarely needed it to intimidate his children and the shock it was met with I think is telling), but I don't think the fact that Kendall and Shiv talk about it the way they do is indicative of them not having been hit themselves. I actually talked about this pretty extensively in this post if you're interested in a more detailed answer, but basically I think that Kendall and Shiv are the most in-denial about what they experienced, and I think the shared history they have in growing up together after Roman was sent to St Andrew's allowed them to create a shared narrative of themselves as the favoured children.
In other words, they lie to themselves, and they have that lie reinforced by each other. Roman's the one who got hit because he was the weak one. What happened to them is irrelevant, because they're the 'chosen ones'.

succession s3 e9 recap: what am i going to do with a soul anyway? 1/6
i'm going to hurl. i'm going to scream. i would like to cry, but i'm medicated.
i can't believe this season has come to an end. and WHAT AN END!
it's been an absolute delight to write recaps this season. a weekly highlight in the midst of winter and covid.
mere hours after finishing episode 9, our government alerted us that we will be heading into another lockdown. i will be spending my time drunk on zoom, talking about succession. if anyone is interested, hmu on discord.
now.... back to the recap. it is going to be a long one, because i have so many theories and thoughts and also i can't go outside anymore:)
Tumblr media
logan is reading a weird, morbid children's book to his grandson while telling both iverson and the audience that kendall was fine in the end.
he didn't drown, guys. but maybe by the end of this episode he wishes he had...
Tumblr media
logan screams out for gerri and i'm SO ANGRY WITH THAT MAN AND SO ANGRY WITH ROMAN WHO SAYS SHE'S A GOOD PAL FOR TAKING THE HIT FOR THEM.
fuck you, roman. fuck you and your dickpics.
you'll see i feel all of the emotions this episode in relation to roman. in this first monopoly scene (yes, they are playing monopoly), that feeling is rage.
Tumblr media
tom is on the up and up and leaves the game of monopoly to get interviewed because he is apparently successful now. oh, what selling your soul to logan can do.
Tumblr media
shiv is clearly surprised that tom is doing something well.
and she is surprised that you're not allowed to cheat in monopoly.
the roys don't play by the rules, willa.
Tumblr media
roman treats kerry like his own personal staff and i want to stab him in the eye with a piece from monopoly.
kerry says she'll have to go get the kids menu. love that for her.
(i also have what i think is a GREAT theory concerning her coming up)
Tumblr media
despite dickpicgate, gerri is still somehow part of logan's inner circle. he still respects her more than he does all his kids put together, i think. suck on that, roman.
Tumblr media
kendall shows up and looks like death and is reminded that he tried to drown himself. he blames it on having had a few too many.
i'm not convinced. the kendall brown era depresses me.
Tumblr media
gerri is still there and she looks great. i don't really have much more to add.
Tumblr media
something something something business related. gojo isn't a safe bet anymore and they need to go back to mattson's to chat.
roman asks if he should join him and logan says no. then shiv offers and logan quickly changes his mind. so it's roman and daddy on a day trip to switzerland to talk to some swede, i guess.
you'd think these people don't have phones.
what they do have, however, is
Tumblr media
HELICOPTERS!!!!!! <3 succession vibe: check
part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6

Newcrest University: Fresher’s Fair
Tumblr media
Here they were. The sports clubs and the popular societies. Of course these clubs were lead by the members of “Partihaus”, the most popular club in Windenburg, and at Newcrest. They’re well known for throwing the biggest and best parties, so it’s no surprise they’ve taken over the biggest and best clubs on campus.
Partnered with the Caliente twins. Newcrest’s answer to The Plastics. Well, half of them at least.
Tumblr media
So naturally, Luna and the popular boys had to go to their own kind. The boys were dying to join the college sports teams. They hadn’t decided whether they all join one team together or just join the team of the sports they’re good at.
Being a first year is so hard.
Luna had other plans. The only way she could be queen bee on campus was to take over these clubs.
Luna: Hey I’m Luna Villareal. Yes, the Luna Villareal.
The older girls looked at her like that name was supposed to mean something.
Eva: Umm...who?
Luna: Are you serious? Jacques Villareal is my father? Most notorious crime lord? Really bitches?
The boys look at her.
Noah: Babe, just chill. No need to be so hostile. Let’s just sign up for these clubs and go.
Eva, and Jade however, had other plans.
Tumblr media
Jade: I’m Jade. Jade Rosa. Leader of Partihaus. (she extends her hand for everyone to shake). We’re having a party tonight at our place Factory One and we’d like you to attend. Bring your friends. It’s gonna be a wild one. It’s our way of saying goodbye to the summer break. (she winks at the boys). Dates aren’t required. We’ll have that covered.
Of course all the boys started to go shy.
Surprisingly Luna kept her cool. Is this girl openly flirting with her man? She took Noah’s hand into hers...
Luna: Of course. That sounds excellent! And sorry for being so hostile earlier. Must be my hormones.
It wasn’t her hormones. Bullshit excuse.
Luna: We’ll see you later, yes?
And she pulled Noah away. The other boys followed.
Kieran (to Jax): Well, that was awkward.
Jax: You’re telling me...

Some notes
Not that I’m sure anyone cares, but a post’s a post.
The ages I’ve headcanoned specifically for this ‘verse are:
Connor: 55
Mencken (and Josh!): 49
Tom: 47
Ken and Stewy: 40
Roman: 36
Shiv (and Willa!): 32
Kids: Sophie (13), Iverson and Kitty (11)
Some of this has to do with less than one year of TV being filmed in 3-4 years’ time, but. I’ll always be headcanoning Roman as younger than Kieran if only because Kieran is closer to Ken’s age than I think Roman is, because I don’t see the age gap being that close, nor does Roman seem that old. Sarah was 31-32 when the show started, and I really don’t buy that Shiv’s approaching her mid-thirties closely enough to stick to Sarah’s 34.
This brought to you by “having enough time to post on Tumblr but not enough time to write a chapter at the moment.”

What do you think Logan was like when all of the kids were young? Do you think he was physically abusive (I mean we have to assume he was right due to the way we saw Roman shrug it off when Logan slapped him and the way Kendall reacts with his body language/stutter whenever Logan is upset with him) and how do you think they were treated individually I think they were each groomed to have a specific role which is why they’re always so at odds with each other. Please ramble as much as you like
I don’t think I have any particular new thoughts about it but I think Logan was volatile, so I think he would lash out in the same way he did with Iverson and Roman. I imagine Roman was more of the child who wouldn’t listen to him so I think Logan probably targeted him more? And Kieran said something about thinking he probably didn’t hit him when he was younger, but I think he did since in 2.01 shiv also says an anecdote of him beating with a slipper for ordering lobster at a restaurant and sort of shrugging it off. Tbh I find it hard to believe he didn’t hit the rest of them though, I imagine shiv not as much since she was a girl and also she seems less of the problem child, the competent one. But I think it’s just unrealistic to think he didn’t hit Kendall, Connor, and Shiv because that’s not how physically abusive parents are. Also the violence is very clearly normalized with the way Shiv talked about that instance in their childhood. I think Kendall’s the only one who knows it’s wrong hence why he steps in to protect Iverson and Roman, I think he was particularly always very sensitive about it when Logan did hit him which is why he always reacts so strongly to those instances, whereas Roman is much more used to it and probably resents Kendall for trying to step in those situations.
As for their roles, I think Connor was obviously ignored and thrown out once Logan re-married, “first pancake” he maybe at a certain point treated him like Kendall, but obviously at a certain age he gave up and forgot about him. Probably viewing him as tainted in some way because of issues with his mother. Kendall comes next and yeah I think he was just extremely hard on him growing up, but I don’t think that means he was anymore affectionate with him than he was with the others. Brian Cox said himself Logan is the most disappointed in Kendall for being so sensitive, so I think saying he’s the favorite child is just wrong. He definitely always saw him as weak growing up probably, but Kendall was always desperate to have his validation and approval but Logan regularly demeaned him. Roman was definitely one Logan had more issues with hence why he sent him to boarding/military school, not sure I think Roman lied about it being military school because the school exists and it’s listed as boarding, not military. But I just don’t think Logan ever really particularly liked him and was just as abusive towards him as he was towards Kendall, he just knew at a young age that Roman couldn’t run the company because of how he acts. I think Shiv naturally gravitated towards Logan as daddy’s girl bc of how Caroline treats her, but because she’s a girl Logan didn’t put much thought into her being an inheritor, so I think Shiv tried to get his approval but was never really impressed by her since it never would amount to anything in his eyes and she would just drift around, it would never matter to him. She’s not used to being a person who’s someone else is invested in, hence her commitment issues and why she’s used to getting what she wants and also impulsive at the same time and why she’s in politics. Lucy prebble, the writer who has the biggest hand in shiv’s character, said that Shiv is so competitive that she refuses to compete. And I think that sums her up very well.
But those are just my thoughts! Not set in stone since we’ll never Really know but it’s cool to speculate what it was like for them growing up.

top 5 fictional dads since you’ve done moms?
oh what a lovely companion...i feel like i had more trouble with this one because you’ve got Fictional Dads, you’ve got your fictional characters who happen to be fathers, you’ve got your fictional characters who technically have children but are kind of deadbeats, you’ve got your fictional characters who have very strong dad energy but don’t actually canonically have children....it’s a lot to differentiate between!
also I didn’t want to just copy my fictional moms list by listing all of their spouses/co-parents even though they’re all cases where I like or are interested in both halves of the couple. there will be some overlap though because I’m predictable.
Tony Soprano predictably (from The Sopranos, dad of Meadow and Anthony, quasi-father-figure of Christopher)
Kendall Roy (from Succession, dad of Sophie and Iverson, who I almost left off this list because I always forget he has kids, sorry, Kendall)
Loghain Mac Tir (from Dragon Age, dad and biggest fan of Anora, biological father of Kieran at least in my canon world state).
Rodrigo Borgia (from The Borgias, dad of Cesare, Juan, Lucrezia, and Joffre, although the real-life Rodrigo had several other kids that didn’t make it into this particular television adaptation)
Theoden, King of Rohan (from Lord of the Rings, dad of Theodred and Dad Figure of his niece and nephew Eowyn and Eomer)
we stan antiheroes/sympathetic villains with kids and epic fantasy fathers, evidently!

INTRODUCTION
Succession Season Three Episode Nine, “All the Bells Say,” directed by Mark Mylod, ends with Logan Roy (Brian Cox) “winning” but leaving his children with Lady Caroline Collingwood (Harriet Walter) in the dust. Logan begins to sell Waystar RoyCo to Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard) for a five-billion-dollar settlement. Now Siobhan “Shiv” Roy (Sarah Snook), Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin), and Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) won’t ever be able to take control of the company. The three siblings come up with a plan to stop Logan from selling the company. Tom Wabsgans (Matthew Mcfayden) betrays Shiv to gain status. Tom officially “trades” Shiv for Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun).
TWO GODS & THE GOLDEN PARACHUTE
Logan has grown tired of conquering the business world but can’t bow out without a significant win. The beginning of “All the Bells Say” foretells the media giant selling Waystar RoyCo. Logan reads the storybook Goodbye Mog to preteen grandson Iverson Roy (Quentin Morales). The storybook is all about a cat named Mog who’s “dead tired” and sleeps forever. Logan also feels dead tired and no longer completely understands the media landscape. When he meets with Lukas, the GoJo Tech God mentions how Logan is too tired to lead Waystar RoyCo into the twenty-first century. Lukas leaves Logan an opening to bow out without losing face or leaving any money on the table.
The introductory talk feels like an actual meeting of equals. Both Lukas and Logan are Gods who exist on a different plane from the rest of us mortals. Lukas doesn’t comment on things with his dry sense of humor. Logan doesn’t put on the charming old man act, and he doesn’t rely on Roman to do the heavy lifting. But, on the other hand, Lukas likes how Logan jumps right into business because he gets bored quickly. The two CEOs both agree that everything bores them except for business.
Logan and Lukas walk to the outside patio furniture faster than Roman, even though his father is an eighty-year-old man with health issues. Lukas straightforwardly explains all of Waystar RoyCo’s problems, starting with the fact that Logan can’t turn it into a tech company because of his age. Logan pushes back but reveals that he does not love the American business world anymore.
When Lukas proposes taking over Waystar RoyCo, Logan doesn’t storm off. Instead, Logan questions Lukas with, “Are you fucking serious?” Lukas promises that he doesn’t want to make the other CEO “small” and proposes excellent parameters.
Lukas reads how conflicted Logan feels about the proposed buyout, including how it would rob his children of the CEO spot. Instead, Lukas promises to make Roman the center of integrating the two companies and give all Waystar RoyCo’s top brass a chance.
After Logan says no, the two gods start speaking in code. The two men stare into each other’s eyes as they plan to “switch assets.” Lukas gestures with his eyes at Roman, who’s anxiously watching the conversation. Logan orders Roman back to Caroline’s wedding. Logan wants to talk about selling Waystar RoyCo without Roman present. All he cares about is “winning,” a.k.a. piles of money that he will never be able to spend.
SIBLINGS UNITE
Kendall, Shiv, and Roman unite against their father. After Kendall confesses to drowning the young waiter accidentally, he shares an emotional moment with his siblings. Shiv and Roman awkwardly comfort their brother with pats on the back and jokes about how they have all killed people. When Shiv confirms that their father plans to sell Waystar RoyCo, giving away control of the board, she orders a car for all three of them.
Before entering their car, Shiv tells her brothers they need to stop the deal. The Roy siblings drive through the beautiful Italian countryside, hatching a plan. Roman tries to stand up for Logan because he has been working closely with him. Shiv points out that their father selling to Lukas means he doesn’t think that any of them should run Waystar RoyCo. Logan believes all his children are mentally weak and wants to leave the company to another God who’s proven his business genius.
Roman questions if they can even legally stop Logan. Kendall explains a change of board control “needs a supermajority in the holding company. Mom got that for us in the divorce.” The sale requires their approval. Roman is still on the rocks because he thinks the deal with Lukas may leave him a chance to gain some power.
Shiv and Kendall team up to explain to Roman that Logan will never back him. Logans thinks his youngest son is a pervert who will leave Waystar RoyCo vulnerable to attack.  Roman reluctantly agrees to help them push their father out of the company.
Kendall and Shiv plan to use Logan’s health issues and their refusal to back the sale to blackmail him into stepping down. All three siblings will rule Waystar RoyCo equally.
FAILURE TO LAUNCH
Shiv proposes that the three of them fight for complete control of Waystar RoyCo, which both Kendall and Roman think will be fun. Even Roman admits they will make a good team. Sadly, the coup doesn’t work because Tom betrays Shiv by snitching to Logan. Logan uses the knowledge in his negotiations with his second ex-wife, a.k.a. their mother. Caroline agrees to take out the clause in their divorce settlement that gives her children veto power in exchange for the London apartment.
Tom wants to be the more dominant one in the marriage for once. Tom leaves Shiv in the cold without a parachute. However, he protects Greg by giving him a minor role at the top of the new GoJo Waystar RoyCo company.
LAST THOUGHTS
How will the Roy sibling survive without Waystar RoyCo? Let us know your thoughts on Succession Season Three below in the comments.

Odelia Kowroski didn’t remember a time before she was adopted. And how could she, really? She had been a newborn when she was taken to the orphanage and an infant when she was adopted. But it was okay, her childhood had been all that she could ask for. Her parents might have been gone most of the time, but she’d never wanted for anything. She had dance classes for hours upon hours every day until she’d been admitted at the Paris Opera Ballet School when she was 8 years old, where she’d spent the next ten years of her life training, and another ten years as one of their principal dancers. That was what had gotten her the role of her dream, dancing as Odette and Odile in their rendition of Swan Lake, the first time they would take their ballet oversees. But when their plane is rerouted to Maine and the dancers are split up into cars to drive them to New York City, Odelia can’t help but feel like something is wrong. And when her car, and only her car, is diverted to Storybrooke, she knows that things are far, far more than what they seem.

THANK YOU for pointing out the Logan getting physical in Austerlitz thing, I never agreed when people say that Logan only ever hit Roman because all things aside, that’s just not how physically abusive parents work, and it’s pretty clear from everyone’s reactions in that scene that if he had gotten physical with Kendall, it would not be surprising to anyone
(x)
You're welcome, anon!
Just quickly though - abusive parents can very much be abusive to only one child – it's often called target-child abuse (or sometimes the Cinderella effect, although that's generally more specifically about abusive step-parents than biological ones), and I actually think Logan was to an extent because I don't think he was physically abusive with Shiv. Because of that, his abuse was still targeted and not indiscriminate, which makes sense too when you consider how much his emotional abuse is different child-to-child.
But yeah, I think Logan was physical with all three of the boys, and in particular I think 1.07 really articulated that pretty clearly. Kendall in that episode is at the very start of his relapse and in the process of self-destructing, and goading his father into physical violence was – in my interpretation – a part of him courting that self-immolation. The fact that he knew exactly what to say to get his father to rush at him like that and didn't so much as blink when he did, coupled with Connor's non-reaction and Roman's half-hearted effort to stop their father - - I think it tells us that Logan going from 0 to 100 is no surprise to any of them.
I also talked about it a bit in this post, but I think the visual set-up of Logan hitting Iverson in 1.05 was specifically meant to feel like a personal memory for Kendall too.

re: the thing you said about kendall probably having issues with food as well, i really agree, i mean succession as a show really has such a good portayal with food where they make it as gross as possible or nobody really eats anything and i noticed kendall barely ever eats at all lmao. his party doesnt have food, he seems very hesitant with that burger in 1x06, plus the neurotic comment about the shaved salad. i know kieran said roman has issues with disordered eating but i kinda get that vibe from kendall too plus he seems like he would be into really weird diets, “health drinks” and workouts
Yeah, I totally agree, anon. I think food is this really compelling thematic touchstone with all of the Roy kids actually, but we definitely get the most on-screen depictions of it with Roman and Kendall.
I can't find my original ask where I talked about this (the tumblr search function is letting me down today!) but I do really like the way that the show utilises food a lot to underscore character beats and dynamics. @waystar-roycos actually has a great gifset here of where some characters use food as punctuation, but I'd argue too that the show broadly uses food as an indicator of power. The moments that immediately spring to mind are, of course, the sausages in Boar on the Floor, Tom eating Logan's chicken on the yacht in 2.10, the donut delivery in 3.02, and the way Logan has all the lavishly prepared food thrown away at the Summer Palace to order pizza instead after he reams out the builder.
There are more moments too - the way the meal is used at Thanksgiving dinner by both Marcia and Logan to strongarm Kendall into doing what they want (and god, you could even argue the way Logan hits Iverson with the jar of cranberries is a direct symbol of violence in power), the way the dinner Greg and Tom share together at the restaurant is them literally tasting power, especially after Greg was stealing scraps of food at work while powerless (another really direct symbol), gosh, even the way Naomi brings food into Rava's apartment I think symbolises a lack of power for Rava especially, but also for Kendall, who not only do we not see eat, but who also has no control over the food, wine, Naomi or situation overall.
Food and the way the show presents it is almost always a marker of who has power and who doesn't, and it's especially focused when it shows the Roy kids engaging with food. Connor tries to exchange it for his father's love with the sourdough, fixates on it at the RECNY ball because he understands it's synonymous with power, and showcases his sommelier skills with Shiv when trying to offer her a job aka leverage her power. We rarely see Shiv engage with food at all, but the key moment we have is when she at least presents that she's cooked for Roman and Connor when trying to get them to sign the letter in 3.03 – which importantly has an added gender dynamic to it as it's one of the few times she's played house at her brothers, and it's directly while trying to manipulate them, and I could honestly talk about that all day, haha – but it's Roman and Kendall who are the most frequently shown with food.
From the start of Kendall trying to talk in his father's sexual business language while eating the burrito (and notably receiving instead of giving) to the powerplay at his dad's birthday lunch, to his fixation over the salad to not eating when Stewy's stealing pastries (again, very notable that Stewy's eating when he's the one who has the power), and like you said, Kendall doesn't have any food at his birthday party. Interestingly to that point too, neither Kendall or Logan eat with Josh in 3.03, while Josh does, a point further underlined when Logan's asking Kendall for water.
Roman in that sense is actually pretty different – he tends to graze, and graze fairly widely. He'll pick at grapes or at his salad in 1.06 and take bites out of fruit like his dad does, and I think it indicates a similar degree of neuroses around food to Kendall, but one that's less fixated maybe on the food itself? Both of them look at food I think as reflections of themselves, but Roman's seems to me to be really grounded in his body and the control he tries to exert over his body, whereas I think Kendall's is more steeped in a sort of overall paralysis.
If food is power symbolically, then Roman can flirt with that power as long as he can control himself, but with Kendall, he either has none, or what he has doesn't fit. It's like a performance. He's not made for it.
It's just this fascinating thing too because I think all four of them understand the ways food can be weaponised, but they each fumble with it. They might have power, and certainly always be around it, but rarely know how to wield it. Roman does come closest, I think, by imitating his father, and Kendall stresses and internalises about the way it appears, Shiv can't work out how to untangle it from her status as a woman, and for Connor, it's a language he struggles to speak, so he comes away offering poor imitations – a sourdough starter Logan will never use and frozen butter. A basic grasp of a language he should be fluent in.
The only character in this show who truly eats what and when they want is Logan, and god, if that isn't just the show in a nutshell.

Spoilers Below
INTRODUCTION
In Succession Season Three Episode Eight,” Chiantishire,” directed by Mark Mylod, Logan Roy (Brian Cox) refuses to let Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) out of his grasp.
The Roy clan travels to Tuscany, Italy, for Lady Caroline Collingwood’s (Harriet Walker) wedding to failed businessman Peter Munion (Pip Torrens).
Siobhan “Shiv” Roy’s (Sarah Snook) tumultuous relationship with her mother Caroline inspires her fight for control over Waystar RoyCo. She uses Roman Roy’s (Kieran Culkin) sexual obsession with Gerri Kellman (J. Smith-Cameron) to take them down.
“Chiantishire” ends with what appears with Kendall drowning in the pool. Unfortunately, there are no clips of Kendall in the promo for the season finale leading me to think he died.
KENDALL’S LAST LEG
Kendall is at the end of his rope when he flies to Tuscany for his mother’s wedding. He no longer travels with a whole posse, just his kids and Comfry (Dasha Nekrasova).
His shaven head looks so shocking that Caroline makes a joke about it. Kendall wears casual clothing like jeans and a polo shirt during most of the episode (minus the wedding reception). Everybody else dresses up for the whole weekend. Kendall doesn’t make as many hard-cutting jokes as usual at his sibling’s expense.
During Caroline’s wedding weekend, everything that happens pushes Kendal off the ledge. To begin with, Caroline tells Kendall that he can’t go to all the parties and ceremonies. Logan refuses to be in the same room with as him. Caroline divvies up all the events. Kendall questions why Caroline even has Logan at the wedding since she hates him. She explains that Peter insisted they invite Logan because he wants to use her ex-husband’s British business and government connections.
A podcaster investigates the “Roy family curse,” covering everything from Connor Roy’s (Alan Ruck) mysterious mother to the caterer’s “suicide. “Kendall accidentally killed the caterer when he was high on drugs during Shiv’s wedding.  Kendall is starting to feel like the walls are closing in on him. Caroline pushes Kendall out in the middle of her wedding reception, leaving him feeling raw.
The last straw comes during Logan and Kendall’s dinner detente. Logan’s paranoia leads him to believe that Kendall will poison his dinner. Since Logan will go to great lengths to win a war, he projects all of his misdeeds onto his son.
The CEO tries to use the excuse that he has a limited diet to eat food that he brought with him. But Kendall made sure the menu fits his restricted diet. When Logan uses his grandson Iverson Roy (Quentin Morales) as a food taster, Kendall feels hurt. He would never poison his father. Having a child test for prisons shows Logan’s extreme paranoia and willingness to put his grandson at risk.
Kendall ultimately wants to be bought out of Waystar RoyCo. He doesn’t want to be at war or close to anybody else in the Roy family. Logan refuses because he cares about his son in his twisted way. He likes having all his children close. Logan will never give Kendall any real power in Waystar RoyCo, but he wants to have him around to be the “mail boy.”
Logan feels attacked when Kendall points out how he only won because Waystar RoyCo and the world are corrupt. Kendall bluntly tells his father that he monetized all of “America’s resentments,” creating an evil media empire. However, Kendall takes no responsibility for his part in building a toxic media landscape. Everybody in the Roy family benefits from Logan’s wealth culminated over decades. The last straw for Logan is when Kendall says he is a good guy who doesn’t want to morph into his father.
Logan strikes back. He brings up the fact that Kendall technically killed the caterer. Kendall is not the perfect angel that he pretends to be. Kendall deflates. Logan pushes back on Kendall, calling him wicked. He would be in big trouble if Logan didn’t clean up his messes constantly. Logan leaves the dinner without freeing Kendall from their destructive relationship.
Kendall appears to drown alone on a floatie in the middle of his pool, drinking beer. Logan wins, but at what cost?
MOTHER ISSUES & INSPIRATION
Caroline’s snarky comments lead Shiv to take back control of her life. Shiv meets Caroline in the courtyard of the restaurant hosting her bachelorette party.
Shiv starts the fight by calling Caroline heartless. Caroline “apologizes” for being a bad mother. Shiv points out that she was not a horrible mother, just an absent one. Caroline accuses her daughter of choosing Logan over her. Shiv exclaims that she was just a kid. Caroline accuses Shiv of always knowing how to twist the knife to get what she wants.
Caroline’s hurtful comments go too far in Shiv’s book when she comments she should never have had children. Essentially saying she wishes Shiv was never born. She compliments Shiv for choosing not to have kids.
Shiv bursts into the hotel room she shares with her husband, Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Mcfadyen), full of conversation. After her toxic talk with Caroline, she has decided that she wants to have children. She plans to fight for control over Waystar RoyCo.
In the morning, Shiv backtracks. She wants to freeze her embryos for now. However, she does begin her destruction of Gerri and Roman. Shiv uses the dick pics that Roman sent to Geri, attempting to discredit them.
