David Dastmalchian Joins “Suicide Squad” Sequel

According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Dastmalchian (Blade Runner 2049, Ant-Man) has joined the cast of Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad sequel. Dastmalchian will portray Abner Krill, aka Polka-Dot Man, a crook who decided commit polka-dot themed crimes and covered his costume in polka-dots to disguise a variety of weapons.

Dastmalchian joins the previously cast Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, and Idris Elba. James Gunn is writing and directing the film, which is said to be less of a direct sequel and more of a new take on the property using new characters and characters from the first film.

The Suicide Squad sequel hits theaters on August 5, 2021.

The Belle Reve, a beautiful ship crafted from the finest wood some 50 years ago when Captain Arlo Holman first started out the life of a pirate. Now it is crewed by a new generation, led by Captain Arlo's daughter herself.

Captain Delphia Holman

Country of Origin: Jamaica/Britain

Abilities: hand to hand combat, master swordsman, sailing, master marksman, navigating, sewing, singing, and historical research

Date of Birth: March 27th, 1690

Duties: absolute elected authority over the Belle Reve and it's crew

History: Her father is a retired pirate captain, who everyone thinks is dead, and she inherited the ship upon his "death". Doesn't deal in people, but most certainly will take anything else. Secretly loves collecting artifacts and exploring new places for hidden treasures.

Commodore Richard Flag III

Face Claim: Joel Kinnaman

Country of Origin: Britain

Abilities: hand to hand combat, master swordsman, master marksman, expert tactician, advanced military operator, sailing, and navigating

Date of Birth: August 4th, 1685

Duties: Captains the Argus, authority over the ship set by the Governor/British monarchy

History: His father was a general in the British Royal Navy and he is following in the mighty footsteps of his family. He is in charge of the ship Argus, sailing from Port Royal in Jamaica under Governor Waller's command to deliver sugar and tobacco to Britain.

First Mate Robert DuBois

Country of Origin: Haiti

Abilities: hand to hand combat, master swordsman, master marksman, mediation, expert tactician, sailing, giving advice

Date of Birth: September 6th, 1675

Duties: second in command on the Belle Reve, acts as a representative to the captain for the crew, deals with punishments and discipline

History: Was first mate for Arlo Holman for several years and knew that once she took over he would go with her across the seven seas. He was ordered by Arlo to keep Delphia safe, but he also sees Delphia as the daughter he never had.

Sailingmaster Cleo Cazo

Face Claim: Daniela Melchior

Country of Origin: Portugal

Abilites: sailing, navigating, cartography, can work and fire a gun with some accuracy, master swordsman, multi-lingual

Date of Birth: November 1st, 1693

Duties: navigating, sailing the ship, cartography, map reading

History: Another pirate captain's daughter and great friends with Delphia. When Delphia got her own ship and needed a crew, Cleo was more than eager to join up and sail the seas as her father did. Has a parrot named Sebastian that is on her shoulder always.

Master Gunner Harley Quinn

Abilites: master marksman, master swordsman, hand to hand combat, gun and sword care, pretty good cook actually, hair braiding, and training

Date of Birth: July 2nd, 1689

Duties: looking after the guns, ammunition, canons and other weaponry during times of peace, and training crew members how to fight

History: Was master gunner for the ship The Joker, but when she met Delphia in Nassau she knew that she needed to leave that crew and join the Belle Reve. Does that mean that The Joker is fire on sight whenever they see the Belle Reve? Absolutely.

Boatswain Abner Krill

Country of Origin: Scotland

Abilities: carpentry, counting, keeping stock, can fire a gun with some accuracy and is decent with a sword, playing the fiddle

Date of Birth: July 21st, 1682

Duties: general running of the ship, making sure there are enough supplies, and keeping up maintenance on the ship

History: Converted from the British Royal Navy. Mostly because he didn't want to get thrown overboard but also because he is very tired of the British government dicking him and his country over.

Carpenter/Surgeon George "Digger" Harkness

Country of Origin: Britain

Abilities: carpentry, hand to hand combat, thievery, master marksman, master swordsman, some medical knowledge (enough to get by)

Date of Birth: March 15th, 1686

Duties: fixing holes in the ship and mostly sawing off the unrepairable legs of his fellow crew members, but he dabbles in medicine as well

History: Picking him up on a prisoner transport ship heading for Australia, being a pirate is pretty similar to the crimes he did back home so he was eager to join the crew.

The Suicide Squad is one kind of crazy superhero film – full of irony and bile.

Superhero films generally are of two types:  those whose creators assume that they exist in a world where the heroes are real and are a part of normal life and the other which presumes that they're not. They're really in a world that's exaggerated, metaphoric or ironic. In a classic superhero scenario – whether it's a film or TV series like Daredevil – the story is meant to feel like it's happening in the real world. The city is New York, the characters behave like humans behave and their lives exist beyond their "super-ness." In these films, though we don't necessarily see it happen on screen, they go to the toilet, have breakfast and see movies. And then there's the other approach. Take for example The Suicide Squad – the 2021 edition – the recent foray into imagining a world with meta-humans or super-beings. It's not quite a direct sequel or a reboot but a standalone variation on Suicide Squad (the 2016 version). As the 10th film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), the Warner Bros execs decided they needed to have another go at setting their franchise in motion. They favored the nefarious character Harley Quinn (Joker's former therapist and lover) but didn't seem quite as happy with the course the team had taken. Not that the first one, Suicide Squad, was bad in my eyes. It did a pretty good job at following the formula for a superhero/villains story despite the fans' expectations of it being something more. Now comes the new tale written and directed by Gunn. He drew inspiration from war films and John Ostrander's 1980s "Suicide Squad" comics and decided to explore new characters in a story separate from the first film's narrative, though some cast members do return from the earlier "Suicide Squad." David Ayer was set to return as director for a Suicide Squad sequel by March 2016, but he chose to develop a Gotham City Sirens film instead. Warner Bros. considered several replacement directors but then hired Gunn to write and direct the film after temporarily being fired by Disney and Marvel Studios as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). In the latest film, head intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) returns (from having been in the first film) to send two Task Force X teams composed of inmates from supervillain proof Belle Reve penitentiary. They are led by Colonel Rick Flag and Bloodsport, to the South American island nation of Corto Maltese after its government is overthrown by an anti-American regime. Most of the first crew – which includes Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and Brian Durlin/Savant (Michael Rooker) – are stupidly cut down with much blood-and-guts in full display. An ensemble cast plays the second team: Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Idris Elba (Bloodsport), John Cena (Peacemaker), David Dastmalchian (Abner Krill/Polka-Dot Man) Daniela Melchior (Cleo Caza/Ratcatcher 2), Joel Kinnaman (Colonel Rick Flag), Sylvester Stallone (King Shark), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), and Peter Capaldi (Gaius Grieves/The Thinker). They enact most of the action since the first group is gone. In exchange for lighter sentences, the squads are tasked with destroying the Nazi-era laboratory Jötunheim, which holds a secretive experiment known as "Project Starfish." In doing so, they are to destroy evidence of the giant alien Starro. It's a creature brought to earth by American astronauts and secretly held on the island to hopefully weaponize it for American defense and profit. As Gunn develops his narrative, he employs exaggerated B-film tropes throughout from the freaky love-making scene between Harley and the new dictator to the gore-engorged violent acts committed by either this team of meta-human villains or their adversaries. Gunn is out for bombast, laughs and some social commentary along the way. Once again, the military-industrial power establishment is the secret master behind this intergalactic menace and mess. After 50 years of secret testing, they still don't have a way to control the massive starfish, a mega-beast ala Godzilla which towers over the city spewing mini starfish. Once these little creatures land on a person's face, Starro takes control of them. It's finally defeated by a massive swarm of rats that enter a wound in its eye and eat it from the inside out. By the end of the film, several things are evident. The super-survivors are a black man (Bloodsport/Elba) and a woman (Quinn/Robbie). The government can't help but double deal. Waller keeps the computer disc evidence secret by cutting a deal with the remnants of the Squad. And chaos is essential to make a superhero film like this work.

2015

If you were to chart a graph of my happiness and passion for covering live music since the begging of this site in ‘09, it’d probably peak sometime in 2014, and 2015 would start the stow decline.  I now found myself pondering a question I wouldn’t be was possible many years earlier.  Is it possible to burn out on concerts?

I’ll dive into that question during my thoughts on 2016 (the end of my blog), but in 2015, I did manage to see some memorable shows.  I invite you to click on the bold print below for links to each of the 20 shows, where you’ll find photos, videos, and maybe even a few words.

The Lone Bellow at the Paradise Rock Club (2.12.15) - These guys were visibly enjoying their success.  This ended up being a super fun show

Sturgill Simpson at the Paradise Rock Club (2.20.15) - This would be my first time seeing Sturgill live, and even though he was feeling under the weather, his performance exceeded my expectations, and he managed to crank out some killer jams.

Damien Rice at the Orpheum (4.7.15) - I remember when he released his album, O, back in ‘02.  I love that album, and it took me 13 years to see him. 

Sufjan Stevens Hartford, CT (4.12.15) - I’m a huge Sufjan Stevens fan, and even though I enjoyed The Age Of Adz (2010), I was patiently hoping for a new album similar to his earlier material.  On February 16, 2015, he shared the first single “No Shade In the Shadow of the Cross” from his upcoming album Carrie & Lowell, and I couldn’t have been happier.

Luckily, I managed to hear the full album before it’s official March 31st release, and was blown away.  This album was a welcomed bright spot during a dark time in my life, and I couldn’t wait to hear it live.  On a whim, I decided to attend the third show of his tour and traveled to Hartford.  While I officially didn’t cover the show, I did capture “Fourth Of July” on video, which was an incredible and intense version of the song.  He was still working out a few kinks for many of the new songs live, so it wasn’t a flawless performance, but I loved the show, and the new tunes sounded beautiful..

Sufjan Stevens (Citi Wang Theatre) (5.4.15) - This show was slightly more polished than Hartford, and Sufjan seemed to be finding his groove with the new tour.  I recorded “Blue Bucket Of Gold”, which was an epic13-minute long version of the tune.

Album Review: Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell (5.11.15) - I wasn’t only enjoying the new album, I was obsessed with it.  So much so, I was inspired to write an album review, which is something I never do, but was pleased with how it turned out.  You can read it here.

The Tallest Man On Earth (Calvin Theatre) (5.13.15) -  I always enjoyed going to Northampton for shows, and this was a special one, as it was the tour opener for his new album, Dark Bird Is Home.  

Courtney Barnett at the Sinclair (5.18.15) - Courtney was touring behind her debut studio album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.

Levitate Music Festival - Marshfield (7.11.15) - The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Dr. Dog, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue - Levitate started back in 2013, and this was my first time attending this festival, which I enjoyed.

Newport Folk Festival Day Fri (7.24.15) - (Joe Pug, Bahamas, Elephant Revival, Angel Olsen, Leon Bridges, The Lone Bellow, Calexico, Strand Of Oaks, The Tallest Man On Earth, Iron & Wine and Ben Bridwell, Heartless Bastards, My Morning Jacket, Roger Waters) 

2015 was absolutely stacked for Newport.  On paper, it doesn’t  get much better, and they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan going electric back in ‘65.

Sadly, this would be my final year covering the Newport Folk Festival, as I ended my blog in the spring of the following year.  However, I’d attend the festival one last time in ‘16, just as I began - a fan looking to hear some music from artists I liked, in a beautiful waterfront setting among some fine folk.

Van Halen at Xfinity Center (8.1.15) - This was one of those bucket list shows for me.  Oddly, I’d never seen Van Halen, and this was a pretty cool experience. 

Boston Calling Day Fri (9.25.15) (Gregory Alan Isakov, Of Monsters and Men, The Avett Brothers)  - As far as three-artist, day #1 concert goes, it doesn’t really get much better for me.  

Boston Calling Day sat (9.26.15) (Stephen Malkmus, Sturgill Simpson, Father John Misty, Walk the Moon, Chromeo, Chvrches, Alt-J)

Boston Calling Day (9.27.15) (Alabama Shakes, Bully, Daughter, Mister Wives, Nate Ruess, Ben Howard, Hozier) - This would be the last Boston Calling I would attend, and the festival would move from Government Center to the Harvard Athletic Complex in May of ‘17.

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats (Royale) (11.6.15) - After first seeing the at Newport, I just had to see the band again.  I’d actually see them four times in Denver from 2016-’18.

Lake Street Dive (Club Passim) (11.18.15) - This was part of their “Memory Lane Tour,“ which included three Cambridge stops - two nights at Club Passim and one at the Lizard Lounge.  This very tiny Club Passim show (capacity 100) was quite special, and included songs from their upcoming album.

Continuano gli aggiornamenti su The Suicide Squad, il reboot del franchise targato Warner Bros. che vedrà alla regia James Gunn, e dopo la conferma dell’ingresso nel cast di David Dastmalchian arriva quella di Daniela Melchior, star televisiva portoghese, che nel film interpreterà Ratcatcher.

Nei fumetti originali viene presentato come alter ego di Otis Flannegan, criminale di Gotham City e antagonista di Batman, rinchiuso nel penitenziario di Blackgate per aver commesso aggressioni, rapimenti e rapine. Il suo più grande potere? Saper comunicare con i topi e addestrarli come servi mentre indossa una maschera antigas.

È evidente che la versione di Gunn non sarà un uomo ma una donna, e secondo quanto riporta Variety il personaggio verrà collegato a quello di Idris Elba (ancora ignoto). Dastmalchian entrerà invece nei panni di Polka-Dot Man, nome in codice di Abner Krill, un truffatore di basso livello che cerca di farsi un nome con crimini e un costume dagli effetti speciali, come macchie che si trasformano in seghe e dischi volanti, mentre John Cena dovrebbe interpretare Peacemaker.

The Suicide Squad: un attore del MCU entra nel cast

Per quanto riguarda il reboot, è stato confermato il ritorno nel cast di Viola Davis (che interpreterà di nuovo Amanda Waller) insieme a Joel Kinnaman, che riprenderà il ruolo di Rick Flag (il leader della task force), così come Jai Courtney sarà ancora Captain Boomerang e Margot Robbie Harley Quinn, anche solo per un piccolo cameo. Parlando invece delle novità, Variety fa sapere che Idris Elba, contrariamente alle notizie delle ultime settimane, non sostituirà Will Smith per interpretare Deadshot ma che la produzione ha eliminato il personaggio e ne affiderà un altro (per ora ignoto) all’attore.

Sempre sul reboot Justin Kroll di Variety fa sapere, basandosi su alcune voci piuttosto attendibili, che Dave Bautista non parteciperà al progetto come ipotizzato nei mesi scorsi a causa di un’agenda di lavoro troppo piena e impossibile da conciliare con gli impegni sul set del cinecomic. A quanto pare Cena dovrebbe sostituire proprio Bautista nel posto lasciato vacante, e i primi rumor suggeriscono che si tratti di Peacemaker, alter-ego di Christopher Smith.

Secondo quanto riferito nelle ultime settimane, la lineup dei personaggi del cinecomic non subirà molti stravolgimenti rispetto all’originale, ma è chiaro che il riavvio del franchise abbia comunque bisogno di nuove figure da introdurre in linea con la visione di Gunn e con le run originali dei fumetti a cui si ispira.
