Deep Dive Papers: The exceptional diversity of visual adaptations in deep-sea teleost fishes
Tumblr media
(X) | Published: October 2020
Key Findings:
This study investigated the visual adaptations of deep-sea teleost fishes, which inhabit the dark and often extreme conditions of the deep ocean.
It was found that deep-sea teleost's exhibit an exceptionally diverse range of visual adaptations, including modifications to their eyes, retinas, and behaviours.
Many deep-sea teleost's have large eyes with a high density of rod photoreceptors, which are specialized for detecting low levels of light. Some species also have tubular eyes that can rotate, allowing them to scan their surroundings for prey or potential mates.
Deep-sea teleosts also exhibit a range of behavioral adaptations to enhance their vision, such as swimming close to the seafloor or moving their eyes and heads to improve their field of vision.
The study suggests that the diversity of visual adaptations in deep-sea teleost's is likely driven by the challenges of living in the dark and often isolated conditions of the deep ocean, as well as the need to locate prey and avoid predators.
The authors finish the paper on the note that understanding the visual adaptations of deep-sea teleost's is important for conservation efforts, as many species are threatened by overfishing and other human activities such as deep-sea mining.

i still think poseidon's more powerful than zeus idk... bc yeah the sky might be larger than the ocean BUT the ocean is deep and mysterious so it's automatically more scarier and more powerful to me

In the act of working on Ponzu’s reference and solidifying that she’s an ambassador from a deep-water zora realm, I got to thinking about what the other residents might look like. Very rough concepts here.
Ponzu is based on a species of chimaera that travels to shallower waters at night/to spawn, so by extension she’s more suited to go ashore to the main zora domain for diplomatic reasons. The other deep-water zora, however... generally most of them are not so suited to it. Both as far as what they can put up with physically, and how their appearance is taken by the mainlanders. They can be standoffish towards anyone not of their realm, don’t speak much to the point they can be mistaken for mute entirely, and the inability for some of them to emote with facial expressions makes them come off as unnerving.

Was asked by a friend what public domain property I would adapt if I had the time/money. One of my answers was 20,000 leagues under the sea comic, but with a mostly women cast.
Anyway here is my oc Caldera being Captain Nemo. I couldn't quite capture the rage filled emotion I wanted in her.

Going off my prior Dungeon post, I gotta say I love fantasy biology so much that its honestly a special interest of mine. It's seldom encountered but Dungeon Meshi really does wonders with it for world-building. Other fantasy stories don't really tell you why a certain creature developed its unique quirks or how they work other than the baseline of ~magic~. Yes, dragons can breathe fire, but how? And why? While DM doesn't exactly go into depth at the latter, it still shares a lot of biological information by explaining how to cook certain creatures.
Of course if you're gonna eat a Walking Mushroom you're still gonna want to know how to tell toxic fungi apart from the actual friendly fungi. Of course that suit of armor isn't really haunted, it's instead used as a shell for a soft-bodied creature who otherwise is like a hermit crab. Yeah this creature isn't meant to be eaten but if you remove the poison sacs, cut around the extremely combustible liver, and cook out the flammable juices from its skin you can still enjoy this rare delicacy.

Genuinely so disappointed with how little worldbuilding there is of Jotunheim in the mcu AND the comics. Like you mean to tell me theres a whole realm made of ice that can sustain a population of literal giants and huge terrible beasts, and youre not even a little bit interested in how it works??

k'uk'ulkan is basically immortal and stopped aging after a certain point, but that also means he has to live and watch his people grow old and die right in front of his very eyes... he's known them since they were children and he takes the time to record their names so he won't forget them.

oh dear. thinking about deep sea life again. The hadal amphipod lives 10,500 miles deep underwater. they're living at 14890.41 psi and it is so so cold down there. but they survive. They live. They keep going despite how hard it is to sustain life at almost the bottom of the ocean. But by god they did it. I'm not crying you're crying
