I think the reason why Steve and Robin's friendship works so well is because Steve is one of the loneliest characters you will meet. He had surface level friendships and relationships that were more so transactions before he met Nancy. He was always desired, never loved. And then when he found someone whom he could love, it wasn't reciprocated in the way he wanted, and he got his heart broken. Then he met Dustin, and he gained a little brother through him and gained the other kids to some extent. And while yes they are his friends, his family, they are still children and quite younger than him and are at different points in life, it's hard to connect on a certain emotional level that way.

Enter Robin.

A girl who up until this point has struggled with friendships and people. Who used to be best friends with Barb until Barb got closer with Nancy and they wanted separate things. Robin who tried to not stand out for the longest time, who has wanted to run away from Hawkins, who jumps to conclusions and is so intelligent but never really had a friend who could understand her on a deep emotional level. Who, was probably closest to her English teacher for some time than any of her peers. Who has always been a people watcher, and rarely took part in her own life.

Both of Steve and Robin were lonely, and both weren't able to live authentically as themselves, granted for different reasons, but when they finally did open up with each other, they were able to find different parts of themselves in the other. They understand what it's like to be lonely. They understand what it's like to hide away certain parts of yourself. And they finally found someone they can just exist and be comfortable around
