can I be real for a second. The descendants movies make no goddamn sense. Mal magics Ben to love her- this is never brought up again. They get together officially. Waved off as the magic wearing off. Uma does the exact same thing but this time it is bad because Mal is his GF Also Mal being blonde randomly for 5 minutes before its reverted. Jane bullies Mal after Mal helps her. Expects Mal not to undo the help she gave her. For some reason. Audrey expecting to become queen and deciding to be evil. Girl he dumped you two years ago!!! Why is this happening now?? It feels like none of these characters got development or arcs of their own outside of Evie.

Speculation: Why many people find Ben Florian unlikeable
Okay so just for the record, this is essentially an analysis post on the Disney series - Descendants. Specifically on the character of Ben Florian, but more so about the reception of his character and why I think people have responded to him the way they have. Gonna be fairly longish so yeah. Anyways, hope you enjoy! :)
Introduction
Pretty much ever since I first saw Descendants, I have been a huge fan of Ben. (Which is no secret if you've read my blog ;)). I think Mitchell Hope did a fantastic job with the character, and his performance really drove it home.
So it's always been quite... Confusing to me that so many people don't like his character. Tumblr isn't too anti Ben, but on YouTube videos and on TikTok, a lot of analysis around him is typically quite negative. The charms of the character that I see and that really make the series for me, really don't work on everyone. And that's something I've found very hard to understand.
But as of a conversation I have had with @hannahhook7744.. I had an epiphany. As to why this character just seems to be a breeze of annoyance to many. And I think the answer lies in tropes and expectations.
First let's talk a bit about another character, a fan favourite - Audrey Rose.
What role does the character of Audrey Rose play in feelings of spite toward Ben?
I think most dislike for Ben stems from the story of his ex girlfriend -Audrey. We get shown it to some extent in the first movie, but it's much more explicit in the third.
In Descendants 1, Ben and Audrey were together. And while under the influence of a love spell cast on him by protagonist Mal Bertha, he performs a love song to Mal in front of the entire school. Naturally humiliating Audrey and breaking her heart.
After the performance, Mal and Ben start dating each other, much to Audrey's understandable anger.
The movie ends with Ben and Mal happy together and everyone is delighted about it yada yada. And then we get an entire sequel where Audrey does not make a appearance.
It's then in Descendants 3 that she makes a comeback. We see that she and Ben have been friends since childhood, and that she's still hung up on him.
Then, again publicly, Ben proposes to Mal. Mal happily agrees and everyone is delighted, except of course, Audrey. She is further heartbroken by this.
The devastation Audrey feels from losing Ben to a girl who literally enchanted him, causes her to have a emotionally moving breakdown in her bedroom, singing "Queen of Mean", a song about heartbreak from rejection.... At least that's what it's about at first.
It then turns into a song of vengeance. Audrey swears revenge on Mal and Ben for the ordeal she has been put through. She takes Malificient's sceptre from the Auradon Museum, and it changes her look, style of talking etc etc. She's a new person. A person hellbent on getting even with the two people who are (intentionally or not) responsible for her heartbreak.
And that's where we enter - the tropes.
The Tropes
The kind of character arc Audrey has had is pretty common. A girl gets her heart broken by a guy. Maybe he cheats on her. Maybe he breaks up with her in a unfair manner (like in this case). And the girl decides to get even with the guy and the "other girl" who has taken her place in his life.
Except... Here's the thing.
Most of the time in this story archetype, the guy really is a heartbreaking douchey thob.
I mean think of any time you've seen this storyline other than Descendants. When is the guy who has dismissed the girl ever really portrayed in a decent light?
In this specific situation, it's not that simple. Yes, Ben did break up with Audrey by publicly humiliating her. And yes, that's extremely brutal. But he didn't choose to. He was acting under a mind controlling love spell.
But nonetheless, this is probably the only instance where the guy breaking the girl's heart like that genuinely was not his fault. It's pretty odd to get a situation where the guy cheating on the girl really didn't willingly do anything wrong. But nonetheless that's what this is.
Ultimately 9 times out of 10, the role Ben plays in this archetype storyline really is of the bad guy. And so it is very compelling to see this the same way. To overlook how at least as far as the break up incident itself, Ben was not at fault, and just see him as the jerk who hurt Audrey.
Audrey's story is also relatable to real life stories too
Another thing which sadly does not go in Ben's favour either, is that this kind of story isn't just found in fiction. Art reflects life, and what Audrey is unfortunate to experience, for the most part, is all too real.
Many people are unfortunate to get hurt by their partners in real life through things like cheating, or just something involving a "other girl/woman". And the pain from this.... Is not forgettable.
And so I think a revenge fantasy of hurting the unfaithful person and their new consort is very common.
Add onto that that lines Audrey speaks in D3 are written to be relatable and impactful. ("There's nothing to lose when you're lonely and friendless, I won't let another person take advantage of me, the anger burns my skin third degree, now my blood's boiling hotter than a fiery sea etc)
I think with that, it's all too easy for victims of these sort of situations to project their own case onto Audrey's. To see Ben the same way they see the guy who hurt them. And in some cases, to see Mal as how they see their homewrecker, and perhaps want to see her get hurt by Audrey too.
And in real life, there is no love spell that makes people cheat against their will, like there was for Ben. People in reality who do the thing that Ben did really are responsible for their hurtful actions.
So ultimately, the sorts of real life people Ben is being associated to by viewers, aren't particularly decent.
Also, the revelation that Ben and Audrey are childhood friends just exaggerates all these feelings. The people who have been hurt by partners who actually had significant meaning to them are the ones who will naturally relate to Audrey most. And again, project their own experiences onto this girl and the people in her life.
The mistake Ben DID make; wrong but taken out of proportion
Ultimately, while what Spell!Ben did is the sort of thing that gets done all the time irl, it is also pretty evident that as I keep saying; he wasn't in control of himself when he did it. So for many people, even the ones who can relate to Audrey, that fact will be acknowledged.
But the truth is, there is a mistake Ben made. After the love spell was lifted, Ben never went to see Audrey to comfort her after what happened. No doubt that inaction would have fuelled the already existing heartbreak. I mean if Ben had had a word with her, maybe he could have given her closure and made her feel better. But he didn't.
There is no justification for this. Ben was in the wrong for this failure.
But it should also be considered that Ben isn't a 40 year old man who has just left his wife of 10 years. He is a teenager. He is still developing in terms of maturity.
Communication, especially about difficult topics, isn't something teenagers are the best at. I mean if Ben were to approach Audrey, we can tell that it would have clearly been very understandably awkward for him (again, not an excuse, but a point to consider). I mean, if you had just done something so awful to your childhood friend/ex girlfriend, regardless of whether or not it was your fault, approaching someone who you'd expect is probably very angry about it is quite unnerving.
But none of these factors would be considered by a lot of audience members, and for understandable reason:
Because of the tropes, expectations and their personal experiences, they are pre set to see Ben in a negative light. So the thing he WAS wrong for, they understandably will find it harder to empathize with and see from his perspective.

Top 3 reasons people hate Audrey that I think are false
I've been wanting to post this for awhile but I've been just not really into being on tumblr all too much. But I was on tiktok and sometimes come across posts defending Audrey and the comments that rebuttal them have so much misinformation in them and it annoys me because it's usually being spoken as fact and if you just think you'll see why it's wrong.
1.) Audrey bullied the VKs
Audrey is not a nice person I'll get that right of the bat now. She's a royal princess she's had etiquette training and that's really the whole problem, she knows what it is and doesn't care to use it on people she doesn't want to. Name actually scenes or scenarios where she full blown bullied or harassed the VKs, I can't name one. Her whole suspicion/ not wanting to be friends with the Vks is why she's labeled as a bully. She's barely even spoken to them when you really get down to it. She let Evie know factual information, she had no royal status in Auradon, she didn't know Evie so it's not like she knew how significant royal status was to her but it was true. The Evil queen was seen as a criminal not a queen in Auradon so why would Evie be seen as princess? The problem comes with the etiquette problem I talked about Audrey knew this probably would've made things awkward or embarrassed Evie she just didn't care, but she didn't Bully her. I can't recall a scene where she has spoken to directly or talked ill about carlos or Jay. She didn't even have a problem with Mal, she had a problem with her mom, and never said anything to Mal about it she would talk to it privately to Ben. She didn't try to stop anyone from being friends with them or alienate them. She again, just talking to Ben, her boyfriend said she he should probably have some common sense and not blindly trust the vks. Even on Family day what Jane said was worse than what she said, all she said was that Ben was going through a bad girl phase Jane made sure to get in Mal's ear with what she said. In D3 her problem was with everybody so she never singled them out to bully them.
2.) She was a mean girl
To me personally there isn’t too much of a difference between a mean girl and a bully which is why even though she isn’t nice I wouldn’t say she a mean girl. She didn’t run Auradon by fear or brute force, and had people scared of her. The person I would say she was mean to was Jane and that’s just because she giggled when she got her hair unspelled. If we’re going according to the other resources besides the movies because we really don’t see much, Audrey was pretty well liked and popular and tried to behave like a ‘princess’ as much as she could.  She’s snarky and prissy I’d say that before I’d called her a full blown mean girl, when I think Mean girl I think Isle Mal, Courtney shane from jawbreakers etc actual evilness. She just needs to learn how to watch her mouth, because at least in D1 she hadn’t actual done anything to anybody. Like hey audrey, even if they ask your opinion it’s kind of an spoken rule to not tell your friend that the dress in fact makes their feet look big. Little out of touch shit like that I could see Audrey doing but then turning around and opening up her closet to them or taking them shopping if they can’t find something in her room because she wasn’t trying to be mean she was trying to be honest, they asked she told the truth and tried to help.
3.) Audrey never loved Ben she just wanted the crown.
FALSE!!! I'm so tired of seeing this narrative it’s the same false narrative as them being in an arranged marriage. These things were never stated as canon people just assumed because it’s easier to hate her that way and justify having them broken up. For starters they had a very high school like relationship according to her diary and canon. She wasn’t dreaming of taking over Auradon and ruling over people. She liked reading notes Ben left on her locker, walking with him through the halls to class, wearing his jersey before games and cheering for him. She liked talking to him and having lunch, she knew his biggest fear and insecurity so they definitely had meaningful conversations. According to her diary since when the first got together in high school she was excited because she really liked Ben and had been crushing on him when HE asked her to be his girlfriend. When her grandma found her she said she was clever for putting herself in first place for the throne and Audrey said it wasn’t like that, she wanted to take things slow and fall in love and then like every teenager who fantasizes about marrying their crush she said they’d rule together. She wasn’t thinking “let me lock him down as soon as possible” Most people date for marriage so if you’re dating a king who you plan on marrying on some point why wouldnt you be assumed queen. Audrey loved Ben but as a princess who was dating a King yeah she knew she’d probably be the queen JUST LIKE MAL DID. Mal immediately went into becoming a lady of the court when her and Ben became official. The only canon girls who were directly after the crown and so used Ben were Mal and Uma who both had their own motives respectable or not. Audrey was a teenage princess dating her teenage prince crush and because she knew that this would end up with her being a queen all of a sudden she never cared about Ben and just wanted the crown. She had pictures of this boy all over her room and took him on special dates just the two of them because she cared they were all more easier and quicker ways to get married to him if that was all she wanted.
Unless I said something was canon these are all of course just my opinion and you’re free to feel differently as that is your right, especially the first two because they have grey area because in the movies she wasn’t this super kind nice willing to say sweet words girl but when you really look into it was she the worst person ever who bullied people no.

Hey everyone!! The announcement of Descendants: The Rise of Red made want to post one of my Descendants fics that I've been working on for over a year now.
It's not related to the new movie, but instead, a story about Audrey going from her childhood to (at least that's what I'm planning) the aftermath of D3.
I think Audrey's life is so interesting to write about, especially since I headcanon her as a lesbian dealing with compulsory heterosexuality, which will be discussed on my fic later on.
Here's the link and summary. Please leave a comment if you decide to check it out <3
Tumblr media
Summary: As Princess of Auroria, it was her job to please her people and her family. Her hair wouldn’t leave the house unbrushed, she would pinch herself a few times during church and King Adam’s speeches if they made her sleepy.
If the press caught wind of that type of behavior, there would be major headlines on how disrespectful she’d been, and how Leah, Aurora and Phillip hadn’t bothered to teach the young girl proper manners.
“We don’t want to cause a diplomatic crisis,” Her grandmother would say. “You have to be perfect, Audrey. Especially since you’re destined to marry Prince Benjamin.”
~*~º~*~º~*~º~*~º~*~º~*~º~*~
Princess Audrey Rose of Auroria has been taught from a very young age that image is everything.
With a conservative and traditional Kingdom, and being heavily influenced by her grandmother, Queen Leah, she struggles to accept herself and embrace her true feelings. We follow Audrey from a young child to a young adult, as her mindset begins to change along with the world around her.
(Or: Audrey's life from childhood to post-Descendants 3)

Back with more Descendants redesigns Namely two news ones
Augustus and Briar
Augustus, canon name Anthony, is the son of Anastasia and the Baker. He currently works as Beau's squire/tutor/government assigned best friend. As the son of a redeemed villain, he is considered an outcast among his peers, and it appears everyone is expecting him to turn out ultimately evil. He takes his job very seriously and wants to prove both himself and his mother as good people. He befriends Evie during the "movie" and helps her get ready for an upcoming ball. He is well aware that it is going to be a test for her, and that everyone is expecting her to fail and label irredeemably evil, so does his utmost to train her to be ladylike.
Briar, canon name Audrey, is the daughter of Aurora and Phillip. She is the princess of her parent's kingdom and the fiancée of Prince Beau, with the goal of their marriage being the union of their two kingdoms. She is rather vain and self-centered, unaware of problems around her. While not completely malicious, she is in need of some humbling. She feels pressured to be an ideal fairy-tale princess, fit for her prince, but she finds this more and more difficult each day. She is in love with Beau, and is beyond hurt when he suddenly publicly breaks up their engagement and professes his love for Mal. After the love spell is broken, Beau doesn't go to see Briar, and it appears he never cared for her at all. And she's angry.
Tried doing a design for Jane too but maaaan was it UGLY. Like really not good, needs a lot of work lol.

Why I think Chad Charming is even worse than he seems
Needed warning: Not Chad friendly. If you are a fan of his, please proceed to read with caution.
I've noticed on Tumblr, Chad is a fairly popular icon. And that in itself isn't really an issue. Many people like characters that I don't, and that's okay. And I'm sure many people dislike characters that I do like.
But at the same time.... People appreciate certain aspects of his character that I personally feel uncomfortable with. And in this post I will explain what those aspects are and why.
His friendship with Audrey is actually quite troubling to me
Chad and Audrey's friendship, often named "Chaudrey" is quite well liked. I.... Find it a bit shady.
When I first watched through Descendants, I wasn't under the impression that we were supposed to take Chad's romantic feelings for Audrey seriously. I thought it was more of a joke that he had a crush on her and was ridiculous about it, so more of a comic relief thing than a serious aspect of the story.
But I've heard that in Audrey's Diary it says that after Audrey's breakup with Ben and humiliation, Chad was very much there for her and was supportive.
Big red flag.
What I find troubling about this is that it's during this very specific period of Audrey's life, that all of a sudden Chad is being so doting. As a guy myself, I would be somewhat suspicious of a dude who fancies a girl suddenly being very attentive and comforting to her after a breakup, suspicious that maybe it's just him trying to slip through and become her new boyfriend.
Of course it would be ridiculous to say that this is a general rule. Of course there would be guys in Chad's situation who genuinely would just want to be there for a friend in need. Maybe it really is that case with him.
But here's the thing.... Knowing Chad, would a logical conclusion really be that his intentions here were pure?
In School of Secrets, its shown that Chad was dating 11 girls at the same time.
In Descendants 2, we see that Chad actually holds somewhat sexist views on women.
And in Descendants 1, we can all remember how he was more than happy to pretend to be romantic toward Evie to just get her to do things for him, and then sold her out when it suited him.
In a way, whether or not Chad's comfort toward Audrey is sincere is a bit beside the point. At the end of the day, suppose you knew a guy with a similar personality and history as Chad's suddenly being a super friend to a girl he liked when she had just broken up with her boyfriend and was devastated about it. Would you not find him shady? Why should Audrey be any different to him than the other 11 girls he clearly fancied? What really indicates that he isn't using similar charms and manipulation that he used on Evie?
And this interpretation kinda is furthered to me by my next point.
2. In a way... Chad takes advantage of Audrey while she is mentally unwell
Descendants 3 on the surface seems as if Audrey is cruel to Chad and he is the poor victim.
But... Let's again, analyse this from a logical perspective, in oppose to the perspective the writers intend for us to take:
Audrey gets taken control of by the sceptre. It plays on her thoughts, her insecurities, and mental damage to turn her into this pink demon figure. It's messing with her brain.
Chad sees Audrey like this, and rather than act with concern that she is not being herself.... He actually genuinely sees this as an opportunity for him. He rushes toward her and offers to become her boyfriend (no seriously watch the scene, he does), or her sidekick, and also offers his support in whatever it is she is planning to do.
He's not worried for her. Not at all. He's *delighted* with this turn of events. Is this really the behaviour of a loyal best friend who cares deeply for this girl? Or the behaviour of a guy who is more than willing to take advantage of her situation to potentially become her man?
Contrast this with Ben's response when Audrey confronts him. He is concerned for her. He knows she isn't being herself. He immediately puts two and two together that she is under a spell and offers his help. How messed up is it that her ex boyfriend who she hasn't seen for an entire year is behaving more caring to her than her best friend?
It could be argued that Chad offering his help to Audrey is to be seen as him simply being afraid that she would put him under the sleeping spell unless he was of use to her. But look at his body language, his lines, and his attitude in the scene. Does it really seem like he is scared for his life? Or does it seem like he's happy?
Not to mention, even as she batters and intimidates him throughout the film, he still doesn't give up trying to get a date with her. At one point, rather than show self preservation instincts and go along with her quietly, he asks if they can hang out at his place. So... Even if he was afraid, would it really change him trying to pull this off?
If a true friend sees you making questionable decisions and not being yourself, they try to steer you back to the right path, they try to find out what's going on with you so they can help appropriately. Chad does neither of these things.
3. He is a hypocrite towards Ben
Okay this one is a bit more speculative. It could just be my protectiveness of Ben talking, but in D3, when Ben says it has been beneficial to Auradon for the VKs to live in it, Chad yells "yeah, especially for you!". Considering that Chad is standing by Audrey as he says this and it seems bitter, I get the impression that he is calling Ben out for Audrey's heartbreak.
And I get it, Ben didn't speak to Audrey after the love spell came off him. That wasn't acceptable.
But... As I said in my previous post, of all the people in the series, is Chad really one to throw stones here?
First of all, as of my aforementioned suspicions of his character's motives, I would find it more believable that this would not be anger at Ben for the idea that he has *hurt* Audrey, but rather envy of him being king and having formerly been Audrey's boyfriend. And using the fallout of the stadium performance as a self righteous justification.
Secondly, even if I were to give him the benefit of the doubt that he is mad at Ben for the right reasons..... He has no room to talk here. Chad literally has cheated on multiple girls, led on and manipulated Evie and just treats girls like utter trash. Ben's one situation of questionable neglect of Audrey is absolutely nothing compared to the hijinks Chad has pulled throughout the franchise.
Just for the record, I'm unsure the phrase "taking advantage of" can apply to a situation not involving sexual abuse. I'm pretty sure it can, but just in case I'm wrong there, please hold me accountable so I can correct it. Thank you.
