Life and The Flesh vs. Doom and The Desolation
Life is concerned with healing, energy, growth, power and luxury - being unrestricted. Doom is concerned with harm, caution, withdrawing, equality and limits - being restricted.
The Flesh is concerned with having your body changed or destroyed or grown in some way. The Desolation is concerned with pain, loss and cruel destruction.
Life and The Flesh
The Life Aspect is about pushing past your limits - gaining power and authority and wealth, growing, rebelling, being reckless. Its symbols include animals, food and youth. The Flesh is about physically becoming more than what you are: having autonomy over your own body and doing with it what you like; rebelling against what you were born as. It is about mass farming and raising of animals for humans to consume, letting something grow so that you may use its body as energy and food for yourself. Having the power to butcher livestock whenever it's needed. Life's emblem within Homestuck is a growing plant; in The Magnus Archives, Jared Hopworth had a garden of human plants. Life and The Flesh are concerned with letting something grow and reach its full potential, even if that means pruning and removing unneeded parts.
Doom and The Desolation
The Doom Aspect is about caution and withdrawal - it is the great equaliser, setting limits for what you can do or be. If Life and The Flesh are about growing and gaining, Doom and The Desolation are about diminishing and loss. The Desolation destroys and limits what you can have - Agnes Montague cannot grow into the person she could have been, because she is restricted to being a messiah. She cannot have her own life or destiny; even falling in love with a single coffee shop worker disobeys the 'rules' of her life and only causes further destruction. The members of The Cult of the Lightless Flame enjoy destroying the lives of people who had reasons to live, and destroying things before their potential is realised. Doom's symbols literally include explosions, bombs, and fire. They destroy what you love and stop you from becoming anything more.
The Flesh and The Desolation are opposites in this system due to the above reasons. The Flesh is about mass growth, even if it disobeys the natural ecosystem, with livestock being killed en masse for humans' gain. The Desolation is about mass destruction, placing limits on people's lives and preventing them from growing and having power.

actually begging the people on my tumblr feed to stop mischaracterising the desolation PLEASE we don’t need the incessant fire parallels i promise you’re missing the entire point! it’s about the gradual losing of everything you’ve ever cared about, the crushing sensation that you can never fulfil your potential because there’s nothing left for you, the understanding that the way you claw to keep what you have will just mangle it beyond recognition and either way youve lost
it’s a metaphor for depression in the way the buried isn’t simply because of the numbness of loss as opposed to the crushing suffocation; it’s a metaphor for anxiety in the way the hunt isn’t because of the ever so slight creeping sensation that everything you hold onto will slip away like sand between your fingers, just slow enough that you feel unworthy of your fear but unable to release that fear because you know something is so deeply wrong NOTHING HAS EVER UNDERSTOOD ME AND MY FEARS SO COMPLETELY THAN THE DESOLATION
like please understand the limbo of not being afraid enough to face it, to reach fight/flight, to have the adrenaline to counter the problem, because the problem is trickling in so slowly from so many different places that you can’t find the source of the leak, but being too afraid to relax, the feeling that if you blink for even a single second you’ll have lost what can never be returned, paralysed with the need to stay vigilant, unable to enjoy what you have before you lose it because all you can think of is the overwhelming knowledge that you ARE losing it inch by inch
it’s fuck all about mindless destruction like i saw someone describe it as!! don’t do my bby the desolation like that it’s about infinite LOSS not DESTRUCTION
full disclosure i haven’t finished the show i may completely change my mind on this take but hhh i have so many emotions about the desolation it’s imo the most intricate and complex fear i HATE when people reduce it to ‘fear of fire’

Since I got into both The Magnus Archives and Vampire: the Masquerade, I found an interesting connection
Vampires in vtm are meant to be terrifying monsters that are the opposite of humanity, and there are 14 Clans, so it makes sense that the each could reflect a different primal fear that humans have, sorted into the 14 Entities (plus Thin-Bloods and the Extinction for fun)
Banu Haqim: The Hunt - The Banu Haqim are known as “the Clan of the Hunt” and are known for being assassins, which mirrors the idea of chasing and hunting that this fear focuses on. The Blood Addition Bane also fits well with the addiction to the Hunt that its avatars often experience. The Hunt is also attached to law enforcement and often uses justice to motivate its avatars, which is a core focus of the Banu Haqim
Gangrel: The Slaughter - The Gangrel originate as a warrior clan from Ennoia, which relates to the Slaughter’s attachment with the fear of war. The Gangrel’s Feral Impulses also matches well with the blood lust and raw aggression that the Slaughter induces and feeds upon.
Hecata: The End - The Hecata’s obsession with Death makes them a clear connection with the fear of the finality of death and all things morbid and dead. The Hecata’s necromancy can be related to the items of cheating death such as the Catalogue of Trapped Dead and the animated cadaver
Malkavians: The Spiral - The Malkavians loose attachment to sanity and their visions that cause them to lose grip on what is real ties in very well with the Spiral’s themes of insanity and lose of reasoning. Their compulsion of Delusion aligns almost exactly with the Spiral’s twisting of perception and warping of what is real. Malkavians also have a symbolic attachment to mirrors and distorted reflections, which is also common with the Spiral
Nosferatu: The Eye - The Nosferatu’s habit for being silent observers and spies aligns itself to the passive, watching nature of the Eye and the fear of anyone being able to see you at any time. Their compulsion towards collecting secrets also fits with the Eye since it revolves around secrets known and uncovered, something the Nos specialize in. They themselves also experience a fear of being seen because their horrid appearances can often break the masquerade or lead to ridicule
Ravnos: The Vast - The Ravnos are travelers and wanderers that countless move across the world, which fits with the Vast and the idea of infinite possibles and expanse. Ravnos being dare devils also fits with the fear of heights the Vast induces since they will preform dangerous stunts and acrobatic tricks.
Toreador: The Stranger - The Toreador are often the most human looking out of all vampires save for their extreme beauty which is almost outside of what is humanly possibles, which is very similar to the Uncanny Valley and the “almost-human” quality of the Stranger. Toreador are also tied closely with music, dance and theater, which are all symbols used by the Stranger.
Tzimisce: The Flesh - The Tzimisce are the legendary Fleshcrafters, inspiring fear of horrible monstrosities of sinew and betrayal of the body, which is basically the definition of the Flesh. Taking a piece of someone’s body can also be used as an anchor or a grounding object (Jon’s rib), which aligns with the Tzimisce and their Possessiveness.
Venture: The Web - The Venture’s need for control and their constant politicking makes them a perfect fit for the Hidden Machinations, which deals with the fear of being controlled or manipulated. Them being (supposedly) at the top of vampire society also fits with the fact the Web always had the upper hand and was behind most of the events in TMA.
Brujah: The Desolation: The Bruja’s strong passion and Violent Temper align well with the fiery devotion of the Desolation and its avatar’s general disposition. Their compulsion of Rebellion and desire to “burn down” systems of control also fits with the destructive nature of this fear.
Tremere: The Buried -
(This one is the one I like the least and was a hard fit, so I may move stuff around in the future). The Treme’s pyramid smothers the people inside of it with hierarchy and leaves them trapped in the system, aligning with the metaphorical suffocation and entrapment of the Buried. Their Bane of Perfectionism also presents as a “crushing” expectation, which would fit with the Buried on a more conceptual level.
Lasombra: The Dark - This one feels pretty self explanatory but the Lasombra’s cold nature fits the descriptions of the Dark and its icy waters. The Dark also has a cult and ties to religious beliefs as it uses ignorance to control people, which is something the Lasombra have strong ties to. Their Bane of Ruthlessness mirrors how coldly cruel many Dark avatars can be such as Rayner trying to kill and posses a child.
Ministry: The Corruption - The Ministry and the Corruption both deal heavily with temptation, as the Hive sings its song of love, safety, and pleasure to its victims in the same way the Serpents do. One of the nicknames for the Ministry are the Corruptors
Duskborn/Thin-bloods: The Extinction - The Duskborn are the newest of the Kindred clans and the Extinction was said to be a new development as a fear. They both are signs of the end of the world, with the Extinction’s full manifestation being said to destroy humanity and the Thin-bloods connection to Gehenna.
Salubri: The Lonely - The Salubri being isolated due to propaganda and hunted to near extinction makes them a very Lonely clan. They also have ties to being slightly more peaceful, as the Salubri tend towards nonviolent hunting methods and the Lonely very truly killing its victims.
Anyways, once again feel free to critic this or pose any additional supports for any of these categories.

Entities That Go Well Together, And Why
by ifthestarsarewilling on Tumblr
The Eye 🤝 The Web
How can you manipulate someone without knowing lots about them?
-~-~-
The Desolation 🤝 The End
The End is the fear of death, and the Desolation is the fear of loss. When someone dies, you lose them.
-~-~-
The Vast 🤝 The Dark
The unknown aspect of the Dark mixes well with the large and unknowable Vast
-~-~-
The Spiral 🤝 The Stranger
If you see something that seems so very wrong, are you going mad or is that thing actually uncanny valley?
-~-~-
The Flesh 🤝 The Slaughter
You are nothing more than meat, and you will be slaughtered for food like a pig
-~-~-
The Lonely 🤝 The Hunt
The ones that are hunting you are in a pack, but nobody is coming to save you. You are alone.
-~-~-
The Buried 🤝 The Corruption
You can't be underground for too long without seeing a worm.

honestly the world is so lucky I will never be a time traveler. I'd legit go to some random village in 1339 or smth and be like.
"Hi there, so you know the 7 deady sins and 7 heavenly virtues yes? Well let me introduce to you the 14 fears :)"
And each time I'd go in a cloak with slightly different properties. One time I would go with very gentle eye patterns with a few eyes painted on my hands with some elias bouchard jewelry, and others I would go covered in dirt and with a shovel on my back and each time I would look like and tell tales of each fear until I became a myth of some weird lady who'd tell you of the world with eyes and claws and knives and doors and holes and skies so blue and-
#That or I would do angel cosplays and teach 1600s men gender equality#Or both#Both is a option#But alas#No time travel shenanigans for me 😔#They knew I'd be too powerful with time travel#tma podcast#tma#the fears#the fear entities#fear entities#14 fears#the 14 fears#the buried#the vast#the spiral#the eye#the web#the stranger#the corruption#the dark#the dark tma#the hunt#the distortion#the desolation#the slaughter

Despite the "order vs chaos" dynamic that the Web and the Desolation have in the Magnus Archives, I believe that the two fears are capable of intersecting, just like the Buried and the Vast do in the ocean.
I just hope and pray that no one will ever hate me enough to put me on the receiving end of a Web & Desolation combo.
It’s a remarkably destructive synergy when it can be pulled off, and in my opinion the absolute worse combo possible.

I had a thought. Well, it’s been an ever growing through for a little while now. I started listening to the Mechs yesterday for the first time, but this started a little while ago when I learned that Nikola Orsinov’s VA was also part of the Mechinisms. And after learning of Gunpowder Tim. [I made the joke internally about Tim deal with explosives in every incarnation he’s in.]
What if the TMA fears are echoes of what the Mechanisms dealt with??
Brian being lost in the Vast and the Lonely—don’t know if that’s canon. I found a “Lost” poster online. But his fear being echoed out across the cacophony of space and ending up in our plane of existence kind of makes sense—in a Doctor Who sort of way, if you get my meaning.
The Toy Soldier being the inspiration for the Stranger makes sense too. A creature that is in a way like us—living, sentient—but in many ways unlike us, thus inspiring the fear of Uncanny Valley—and again that fear is echoed through the cacophony of time and space.
Idk how Gunpowder Tim dies, but if it’s in an explosion, there you go for the Desolation.
Jonny and his need for violence and action is drawn into the Hunt but it’s not clear if Jonny inspired the Hunt or if the Hunt inspired Jonny.
The Flesh is very animalistic so that probably started on Earth with prey animals. But that’s not my point.
There are many earth based fears—the Flesh, the Web, the Corruption, the Buried—but what if the more obscure ones—the Lonely, the Vast, the Void, the Stranger, and the Desolation—started with the Mechanisms?
Because I can’t help but recall planets getting destroyed in OUaTiS for however long Cole was ruling and destroying planets. Things had to have been released from some of those planets.
Things that lead to the Fears, things that inspired the Fears. Idk. Just my ramblings.
