you know I wasn't going to comment on anything s3 in detail or write a super long divisive post because that's draining and tiring and I just want everyone to have fun and find joy in fandom in whatever way is best for them. And yet here we are. Who'd have thought?
All I wanted from season 3 was for Wilmon to talk to and with each other, to get to know each other (better) and to try to understand and support each other and grow together. To be a couple in love and working on their relationship, learning from each other. Them against the world, facing problems together as a team. I wanted romance and hugs and honesty, and all I got was them being horny. I mean don't get me wrong I love them being horny, but I don't want that to be their entire (positive) relationship and the only thing they have going for them as a couple. Please just have an actual, proper conversation with each other?
This post however is not about that. This post is about Kristina.
I hate what they did with her. I hate her entire character arc (if you can call it that) in s3. I hate what triggered her breakdown. I hate that instead of breaking the circle of abuse and emotional and physical neglect she no doubt suffered, she perpetuated it.
She left her son alone when he needed her most. When all he needed was a hug and a good long cry and the assurance that he's not alone, that she's there for him. That she understands. For someone (his family) to be there and listen and assure him that for them, Wille comes first. (I mean not all, he also needed proper therapy for one, but that'd have been a great and important start)
Wille is a child. Her child. Wille needed her and she failed him. She pushed him away and she sent him away and she left him alone.
(the same is true for Ludvig of course, it'd be extremely sexist etc to not put the exact same expectations and blame on him as well, but alas this post is only indirectly about him as everything always is at best)
However.
Her son is dead.
She's been groomed to believe her entire purpose in life is to be a mascot (which comes with very specific expectations and restrictions she herself said she struggled to adapt to) and to give birth to the next mascot.
I don't pity her for that, but that's still her entire identity and purpose in life. It's always been, and now the next mascot is dead and she has to burden the son she thought would be spared with it all, pun very much intended.
But let's return to my first point first. Her son is dead. Not just the next mascot. Her son.
Yes, Wille's brother died as well and I'll never make light of that. It's horrible and a grief and pain impossible to put into words. Especially as a kid or young teen. Wille needs all the support. Still.
It's not the same.
I know it's not the same because I know exactly what it's like. Both of it.
Granted I'm not a queen, but I did have a cousin who died aged sixteen. We lived in the same house their entire life and shared a bedroom for years. We were like siblings. It was my first time experiencing the death of a close loved one and it was horrible. We all struggled for a long time. Their siblings and I and the entire family, and they will never be forgotten, but it broke my aunt and uncle. Fifteen years later and they're still broken.
I also have two sons and a spouse who are dead (no I didn't lose them, I know exactly where they are) and I promise you it's not the same. A dead sibling is nothing like a dead child. (not that it's a competition)
I'm not going to talk about what it does to you internally, but I will tell you what you'll experience from the outside world when your family dies excitingly enough to make it to the local newspaper. Then feel free to multiply it by a large number of your own choosing when you're royalty and the entire country is looking at you and you've been groomed to never lose composure.
Everyone will call and show up and want to show their support and their condolences (that lasts until about a week or so after the funeral). And they will get two words in and break down and cry, each and every one of them, and then it's your job to console them and be strong and deal with all the arrangements and lawyers and bureaucracy. And it'll have to be you for most things no matter how supportive your family might be, because it's you who needs to sign shit and show the school a death certificate. Everyone will mean well, but it'll be everyone else who'll require reassurance and you who'll have no choice but to function because at first there's so much to do. So much. You won't have time to breathe until after the funeral, and after that there're still so much more to do and take care of you'd never have considered before. For weeks. You can ask someone else to drive you but it'll still be you who's required to show up and do the thing. Some things will drag out for months and more. You don't have time to break down and be weak. You can't afford to, because you also have a job and other responsibilities and a duty to your dead loved ones.
But then the day comes when it's 'over' and there's nothing more to do. Sure people still look at you with pity and whisper behind your back wherever you go and fall quiet, unsure how to react or what to say, because you're now the lady who lost her family in a freak accident, but everything and everyone else moves on. That's normal. It can't not. But it's that quiet after which is the most dangerous.
I hate that they made Kristina's breaking point her son publicly coming out as queer, renouncing following traditions without thought and admitting to having been in the video. I hate it so much, because that was a choice made with an entirely different motive behind the one I'll expound on now and I hate that. Don't instrumentalize grief and the loss of a child and sibling to further prove and underline your political agenda (which I agree with). It cheapens it and was very much unnecessary. We all would've gotten the point without it as well.
But you know what? I can't fault Kristina for that.
You don't know your breaking point until you reach it. It can be anything. There's a reason the saying goes 'the straw that broke the camel's back'. Everyone has a different one and they often feel very ridiculous to oneself (which is a very helpful feeling in that situation, believe me /s). I've talked to numerous people who've gone through something similar. In my support group and in grief counseling and group therapy. No one I've met had a 'logical' breaking point.
Mine came late last fall when I saw a robin outside my window. Yes a bird. We'd have one come every winter to eat the oats and raisins etc we put out for it, and my youngest would spend endless hours every day before dusk looking out that window waiting for the robin to come and eat for a few moments at a time, less if he started clapping out of excitement.
That was it. Boom. I was useless for the next seven weeks.
You don't let your grief overcome you. That isn't a choice. You don't choose not to function when a loved one dies. You don't choose to be depressed or to have the most ridiculous thing be your breaking point. You don't choose to be too strong to not let the grooming break you or to be too weak to be unable to break out of it. And you don't choose to be unable to sit at a birthday party and enjoy cake with a son you know you'll have to force into a role he never wanted, the one your dead son was supposed to fill.
Does that make Kristina any less of a shitty mom? No, of course not. Nor does it change anything for Wille. Kristina's grief shouldn't be Wille's concern. But you don't choose any of that, and the stronger you have to appear the farther you'll fall once you just can't hold it together anymore.
I grew up with a very large, multicultural extended family. There wasn't an hour I was awake at home as a kid when I wasn't hugged or kissed by a younger cousin or aunt or my mom (it was super annoying). We talked and still talk about everything. I married into a family which was a bit less physical and more Swedish in showing their affection, but they are still very open and loving and genuine. I had all the support I could ask for. They're the best and I couldn't have asked for more.
It's not enough. Your child is dead. And Kristina had none of that.
Is Kristina (and Ludvig) super annoying for going on and on and on about Erik and how perfect he was? About always bringing him up when they have a son right there who needs them desperately?
Yes. It annoyed me too. I kept catching myself being furious on Wille's behalf and Simon's with how Wille reacted to the not-comparison between Erik and Sara. But I understand Wille's reaction to Simon and I understand Kristina and Ludvig.
Because once your child / sibling / spouse / dog dies?
They become perfect. My oldest once poured syrup where he shouldn't (it was a Nordic winter night and the car was thirsty) resulting in us being out of our only car, our insurance laughing at us, and us unable to afford a new one. It cost a lot of money, my spouse almost their job and made our life a lot harder for well over a year. He was old enough to know better (and leave the house by himself to go outside and play). He never did anything wrong in his life. He was perfect. They were all perfect.
Erik? What we learn about him is horrifying, and it being normalized and dare I say institutionalized, with him probably not having second guessed his actions, makes it worse instead of better. I do believe Erik was the kind of guy who just didn't (care to) think and merely did what was expected without further thought. That doesn't make it better either, because those kinds of people are the ones who keep corrupt systems running. I might be wrong about his character entirely, but it doesn't matter, because as soon as he died he became perfect.
It's weird what death does to our perception of a loved one. Or maybe not. It's also weird what death does to our perception of everything, because suddenly everything will remind us of that person.
A cloud? A scent? A sound? Toilet paper? Kristina is at the stage where everything she sees and feels and smells and hears will remind her of Erik and his death. Of how he's dead and now Wille has to become him and that is the worst.
Also her son is dead.
No she can't just pull herself together and eat the damn cake. Everything she talks about is Erik because everything she currently is is Erik. Her son who is dead.
There is a reason this is such an often used trope in fiction.
Kristina spent all her life being told that her duty to the throne is her only purpose in life. Be queen. Represent Sweden. Produce an heir. Part of why she's as old as she is is no doubt because Pernilla August is awesome and you can't not hire her when that's an option, but nothing else in this show is a coincidence and done without thought, so I refuse to believe that Kristina hasn't always been meant to be an older mom.
Maybe she had fertility issues. Maybe she for whatever reason didn't want kids and put it off for as long as she could. She's certainly not maternal. Unlike every other woman her generation, no one ever expected her to be maternal. That's not her job.
Quite the opposite. Kristina is old enough to have been raised at a time when royal mothers weren't expected to have any hand in raising their children except for approving (or rather disapproving chosen) nannies and playmates and tutors and the like. She was very likely the first female heir apparent, or maybe she was simply the heir because she had no (male) siblings. Either way her job was always to be a monarch, not a woman or a mother. That's what staff is for. That's not an excuse, but it does explain her as a character.
She was groomed and forced herself to adjust (I do believe forced is the right word, because unlike Erik she seems to (have) be(en) a lot more like Wille than she'd like to admit). She had to be strong and queen and represent Sweden. And then her son and heir died and she failed at both.
I do believe Erik was always the 'easier' child, doing what he was told and taking only the freedoms he knew he'd be granted, while Wille is willful, argues, has a temper and his own head. (that doesn't mean Erik was happier or better adjusted)
And now Erik is dead and Wille has to fit the mold. Wille who got to go to a normal school and clubbing and was let to run wild with little preparation for the role he'd someday have to support his brother with. Arguments can be made that Kristina and everyone else never cared about Wille until they needed him, but I'd like to think she meant well and gave him the freedom she could, and because she is a bad parent she thought she was being kind, and because she is queen no one told her otherwise until it became a problem.
Kristina has never been a good parent, and I honestly believe saying someone meant well is an insult and not an excuse, but I do believe she tried the best with what she knew, the best she could.
It wasn't enough, it was the opposite of enough, but she tried and her breakdown is not a weakness but something which was a long time in coming.
She's not maternal. Her job wasn't to be maternal. Her job is to be a mascot and have other people make sure the next mascot is fed and watered and able to perform. Her being too brainwashed to see how horrifying that is does not make her innocent or any less of a bad mother, but why would she think of acting any other way?
She's ashamed of her breakdown. She can't be weak. Not in front of the nation and not in front of her son and heir. Wille can learn and grow and change. Everyone can and it's never too late, but Kristina here is meant to be what Wille risks becoming if he doesn't, if he gives up and becomes a thoughtless mascot.
Kristina is not a victim and I can't forgive her for being a shit mom, but she's also not the devil. She's a mother who lost her child, and she's spent her whole life being told that the worst thing she can do is to appear weak.
Well guess what? At one point that simply doesn't work anymore.

I originally planned on reblogging and merely adding my own thoughts, and I did talk to her before posting, but then it became something even more personal than originally planned, and considering the difficulty of the subject I found myself more comfortable making this a standalone post. I know that's not proper tumblr etiquette, but please bear with me. Many thanks to @voldiebeth for motivating me to put my convoluted thoughts and feelings in writing and order them a bit. It was very cathartic.

The (Dysfunctional) Holy Trinity Theory
So random thought/theory that sorta went into a rabbit hole. I was thinking about how the Variya situation worked as we know from K.F. since she's supposed to be dead by Adrest's account, and she's clearly not. I used to think Karma was pretending to be her... until I realized Karma making its presence known is WILDLY different than the few moments we see Variya doing it. Which lead to me to think that she probably did the classic mad scientist move of backing up her conscious/soul in the Core and became a part of it and the Karma Files doc that Adrest had was before she decided to pull that shit.
Alrighty cool, then it made me think maybe Karma and Variya being the god/leader of the Core works kind of like the holy trinity. Where they are separate beings but they act as one God. When Flora failed at Eclyssia Pyramid and had her meltdown on the monitor we see both Variya and Karma appear and the very ominous anniversary picture of Variya where we see on Aelita's photo an transparent eyeball which is an obvious reference to her being marked by Karma at the end of Renegade Ch.0. So it's clear that they work together.
And then just to double check my sources I saw a symbol of the holy trinity which I thought nothing of until I noticed the shape and well...
I always thought the core was supposed to be a sci-fi version and very simplified version of the Creation Glyph (which is probably inspired by the trinity anyway) but this is way more specific. We already had a Karmafied version of the Creation Glyph in Aelita's platinum route anyway. Could this be just a coincidence, probably, but also could be intentional.
So to keep this theory brief, that the current high players in The Core represent each aspect of the holy trinity.
The Father (or the mother in this case) = Variya- I feel like this should be self-explanatory, she created this system and assigned roles to her followers. According to the Space Hags, Variya is their master and queen.
The Son = The Interceptor- Having Adrest's soul, you know Variya's literal son helped narrow this down. Jesus was sent to earth to be a man in order to atone for the sins of humanity. The Interceptors are humans given authority by the system to rewrite fate and have the choice to save or condemn humanity. Resurrection is also an obvious parallel between the two. Finally the Space Hags (god they nails this shit together) former interceptors after finishing their mission ascended to godhood.

Karma controls the fate of every person and just an disembodied eyeball lacking a physical form (as we know right now.) They are the controller of the Core and as we see in Renegade can talk and forcibly lend power to a person that it marks.
Okay, I'm tired and I'm turning 23 tomorrow so let's wrap this up. The 17 overseers besides Adrest, Nymeria, and Vitus throw a wench into this, but they probably follow Variya/Karma, so it may work (idk if Vitus does, but that's another story entirely). This trinity is dysfunctional as shit bc of Variya being sus as all hell, Karma forcing people's fate and making them Karma beasts in desperate situations, and the existence of Renegade Interceptors, Interceptor like Crescent who only cares about her goals, and how non-Variya Interceptors like V or psuedo-interceptors like the Mysterious Figures fit into this. I feel like that might be the point, it's a computer-based system attempting to recreate god being led by people who are morally dubious at best, despite the best intentions (Nymeria, Space Hags) to Vitus "Indraid "Sirius" Theolia. Sorry for the Theology lesson in my funny Pokemon fangame, but I gotta let my delusions out that's going to be wrong in 5-9 months (hopefully) See you!

"For the Strong Women": Dark & Cold's Poignant Commentary on Women in Society
Dedicated explicitly to the "Strong Women", my debut novel, Dark & Cold portrays multiple female characters presented in connected circumstances that mirror the experiences and issues faced by women in society today. Despite the fictional landscape of the story, many of the illustrations of female presence and power are representative of the very diverse means with which women in our society navigate a complex, continually perpetuated patriarchal system. The following is a comprehensive (but by no means all-encompassing) breakdown of SIX prominent Dark & Cold women, their roles in society, significant personal experiences, ultimate fates, systematic gendered strengths and limitations, relationships with power, and outcomes or consequences of asserting autonomy.
1. Princess Ericia Charlotte Avington
Ericia stands at the center of Dark & Cold, her life a harrowing testament to the realities of abuse, loss, and survival within a patriarchal monarchy. After witnessing her mother’s suffering and losing her to the machinations of power, Ericia is thrust into queenship-not as a sovereign, but as her father’s puppet, her every move controlled and her voice suppressed. Her body and spirit are scarred by relentless physical and psychological abuse, and her value is repeatedly reduced to that of a political commodity, bartered in alliances with Rowan and Henry. Ericia’s understanding of love, marriage, and trust is deeply shaped by her family’s dysfunction and the traumatic loss of nurturing figures like Marie, leaving her wary of intimacy yet quietly yearning for genuine connection. Her platonic bond with Avie offers rare moments of light, while her romantic entanglements are fraught with manipulation and the ever-present threat of being used. Despite these overwhelming adversities, Ericia’s resilience and empathy shine through; she refuses to let cruelty define her, and her gradual journey toward reclaiming agency and voice is a powerful feminist narrative. 2. Queen Olivia Avington
Queen Olivia is a figure of quiet dignity and tragic endurance, her life marked by profound loss and unending suffering. Plagued by miscarriages that strain her marriage and become a source of blame, Olivia endures escalating emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse from King Charles. Yet, she remains gentle and gracious, advocating for the marginalized- particularly the Callie family, those stripped of power and wrongfully punished by the kingdom’s corruption. Olivia’s nurturing presence as a mother and queen stands in stark contrast to the violence she endures in private. Even as she is manipulated, framed for treason, and faces her unjust death, Olivia refuses to betray her values or those she loves, meeting her fate with remarkable courage. Her resilience, moral clarity, and advocacy for the voiceless make her a quietly radical figure, embodying the strength that can exist beneath outward gentleness. Olivia’s story is a powerful commentary on the intersection of gender, motherhood, societal expectations, and the enduring strength of women who survive and resist within oppressive systems. She is a testament to the cost of enforced silence and the dangers of unchecked patriarchal power, her fate a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by women who dare to care.
3. Marie Callie
Marie’s journey is one of resilience, loyalty, and ultimate sacrifice. A migrant from Lystotia and lifelong member of the Callie family in Vynier, she rises from humble beginnings to become a surrogate mother and protector to Ericia. Marie’s unwavering love and courage place her in direct danger; she is executed by King Charles specifically because she knows about -and is a witness to- his abuse of Olivia and Ericia. Her knowledge and willingness to protect Ericia make her a threat to the king’s power and secrets, and her death is both a punishment and a warning to others. Losing Marie leaves Ericia deeply scarred, instilling both a fear of trusting adults and a longing for genuine connection. Her story underscores the vulnerability of women who challenge or threaten corrupt authority, especially those who are outsiders or “othered.” The trauma of losing Marie shapes Ericia’s outlook on motherly and womanly figures and her ability to trust from a young age. Marie’s legacy is a stark reminder of the precariousness of women’s roles in patriarchal societies, and the tragic consequences for those who dare to stand against injustice.
4. Avie Archer
Avie, Ericia’s lady-in-waiting and best friend, is a beacon of hope and emotional strength in the midst of palace darkness. Serving the princess directly, Avie is uniquely positioned to observe the underlying political issues while maintaining a positive, grounding presence for Ericia. She weaponizes innocence and naivety, using intelligence and emotional awareness to support Ericia and offer realistic, healthy companionship and a sense of normalcy and hope. Avie’s romantic relationship with a Montien soldier, Carter, challenges social and gender norms, as she navigates the risks and societal judgments of crossing class and national boundaries. Her ability to balance friendship and duty, optimism and realism, makes her a lifeline for Ericia. Avie’s character is a testament to the power of female friendship, the importance of emotional labor, and the subtle forms of resistance women employ in restrictive societies. Her story invites reflection on feminist theories of agency, intersectionality, and the value of “soft” strength, as well as the societal implications of women’s choices in love and loyalty. Through Avie, I explore the complexities of women’s roles in both public and private spheres, and the ways in which emotional intelligence can be wielded as a form of quiet power.
5. Princess May Wright
Princess May of Lystotia is a master of social maneuvering, her intelligence, wit, and charisma matched only by her ability to wield her royal status to project strength and maintain her family’s reputation. She often displays mistrust and superiority, particularly toward Ericia, and feels closely attached to Henry. Her relationship with Rowan is complex, marked by both sibling loyalty and rivalry. May’s agency and freedom to make her own decisions set her apart, marked by her position as royal daughter while notably not the heir to the throne. Her choices sometimes expose her to the consequences of gendered expectations and social scrutiny. May’s intelligence and ability to navigate court life are both her shield and her burden, challenging simplistic notions of female power. Her fate and choices prompt readers to consider the costs of freedom and the persistent barriers women face, even at the highest levels of society. May’s character is a nuanced exploration of the complexities of female agency, reputation, and the social costs of autonomy.
6. Gaya Archer
Gaya, lady-in-waiting and closest friend to Queen Olivia, is a figure of resilience, emotional intelligence, and quiet strength. As both confidante and servant, Gaya is privy to the abuse and corruption within the palace, skillfully balancing loyalty and boundaries. Her worry for her daughter Avie, who also serves the royal family, adds another layer of emotional complexity to her life. Gaya’s ability to witness and survive the palace’s darkest moments, while maintaining her sense of duty and compassion, is a testament to her strength. Her association with Seth and her navigation of gender and class dynamics further complicate her experience, highlighting the difficult choices women must make in patriarchal and class-stratified societies in order to survive. Gaya’s story brings to light the often-invisible labor and emotional toll borne by women in service roles. Her perspective enriches the novel’s exploration of intersectionality, class, and the limits of agency, emphasizing that the struggle for dignity and justice transcends rank and title. Gaya’s resilience and discretion, her ability to separate personal loyalty from duty, and her sacrifices for the safety of those she loves, make her an unsung pillar within the palace and a mirror for the struggles of working-class women everywhere.
Through these six women-Ericia, Olivia, Marie, Avie, May, and Gaya-Dark & Cold offers a powerful, multifaceted exploration of women’s lives under patriarchy. Each character’s journey is marked by trauma, endurance, agency, sacrifice, and solidarity, revealing core messages of the novel: that women’s lives are shaped by both personal and structural forces; that resilience and compassion are forms of power; and that the pursuit of justice, autonomy, and healing is both necessary and possible, even in the darkest of circumstances. This body of literature is my tribute to the strong women -real and fictional- who continue to resist, survive, and inspire change.

Texas, other states should fully fund due process
OPINION The constitutional crisis of public defenders
Six decades ago, a Florida judge asked a suspected burglar whether he was prepared for trial.
“I am not ready, Your Honor,” replied the defendant. “I have no counsel.”
He was nonetheless tried and convicted without a lawyer by his side — and sentenced to five years in state prison.
A year later, that same individual, Clarence Earl Gideon, submitted a handwritten appeal to the United States Supreme Court.
He argued that absent a lawyer to assist him, the court had denied his Sixth Amendment constitutional right to a fair trial.
All nine justices agreed.
Their decision — Gideon vs. Wainwright — required that states provide adequate legal representation for criminal defendants unable to afford their own.
Last month marked the 60th anniversary of the Gideon decision.
But despite its promise, our judicial system still teems with Clarence Earl Gideons — defendants going to trial without adequate legal representation.
An estimated 4 out of 5 criminal defendants cannot afford to hire a lawyer and rely on public defenders or court-appointed lawyers, according to reporting by The New York Times .
Public defenders are among the most dedicated and passionate advocates for an effective criminal justice system.
However, in state after state, public defenders offices are overwhelmed, under-resourced and understaffed.
Despite the constitutional guarantee, necessary resources simply aren’t flowing to public defenders.
In some states, legislatures dedicate inadequate funding to public defense.
For example, in Oregon, the American Bar Association concluded that the state needed the equivalent of 1,900 full-time attorneys.
At the time of the report, Oregon had only 592 public defenders.
A similar study from the American Bar Association found New Mexico’s Offices of the Public Defender needed to hire 602 new attorneys — essentially tripling in size — in order to provide the constitutional minimum of effective assistance of counsel.
In Texas, rural jurisdictions are often in the most need of help. A recent report by the Deason Criminal Justice Reform Center at SMU found that fewer than 900 lawyers — less than 1% of all Texas lawyers — were practicing criminal justice law in the state’s 159 smallest counties.

Other states try to fill the gap by allowing judges to appoint private attorneys for indigent defendants — often with disastrous results.
Judges have been caught playing favorites, prioritizing family, friends or campaign contributors.
Sometimes lawyers take on impossible caseloads in order to rack up hefty bills courtesy of local taxpayers.
The result of this broken system?
Thousands of defendants are deprived of their constitutional right to counsel.
Without a lawyer to advise them, defendants often simply plead out, regardless of guilt.
Men and women serve prison terms they could have avoided.
Their criminal records translate into a lifetime of punishing consequences such as prohibitions on business licenses, housing restrictions and exclusions from essential government programs.
Simply put, we are paying for a broken system and then paying again for the consequences of its dysfunction.
This needs to stop.
Policymakers in every state, on both sides of the aisle, must step up.
They must ensure that they’re fully funding public defender offices with the same vigor that they demonstrate when fighting for higher law enforcement and prosecutor budgets.
Some states have begun this work.
Idaho passed a statewide public defense plan earlier this year.
In debating the bill, state lawmakers noted not just the benefits to criminal justice, but also that the legislation will allow localities to cut property taxes.
South Dakota, which is one of two states that does not provide any state funding for public defense, has taken the first steps toward reform by creating a public defense task force.
And in Pennsylvania, the other state that does not provide state funding for public defense, Gov. Josh Shapiro has similarly opened the conversation.
At a time of tense partisan divides, public defense is that rarest of issues — one that unites our duty to the Constitution with direct benefits to taxpayers, while also having bipartisan and popular support.
A 2017 survey by the U.S. Department of Justice found that 66% of Americans favor using tax dollars to provide public defense for people accused and presumed innocent of a crime who cannot afford a lawyer.
After Clarence Earl Gideon wrote his letter, he was retried with competent defense counsel.
The verdict?
Not guilty.
He spent two years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Without his efforts, “the vast machinery of American law would have gone on functioning undisturbed,” then-Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy noted after the Gideon decision. “And the whole course of American legal history has been changed.”
Sixty years later, it is time for us to address this crisis and honor the promise of Gideon , and of our Constitution, by fully funding public defender offices.

However, this may be a reflection of the realities of life in modernity which creates conditions that perpetuate alienation, loss of fundamental human values, and dysfunction. Hierarchical social relationships overwhelm the concept of family and biology. Despite his years of support and care, Gregor’s transformation becomes a topic of shame for the family. His eventual death arrives not due to the physical effects of the insect body but because of the abuse he suffers at the hands of those for whom he dearly cared. The family’s emergence as a working unit is a perverse form of redemption which is the product of Gregor’s demise. Estrangement is a common aspect of modern times. Despite complex technology which enhances connectivity, many feel alienated. Gregor felt similarly in the story, working an interpersonal job but having no real relationships. Superficial relationships are a critical factor in the story. Gregor’s metamorphosis further alienated him by creating a psychological divide with even his family. The inability to communicate and his physical state becomes a point of isolation which was simply an extension of his human form. Gregor feels strange in his own room, personal tastes, and relationships. The metamorphosis simply confirmed the environment of alienation which is created by the modern social order. Through metamorphosis, Gregor was reduced to a primitive creature. Human history suggests that society has evolved into a sophisticated state. However, Kafka created the effect of reverse evolution in Gregor by making him an insect suggesting that species can change into primitive forms. This is a commentary on the realities of modernist society which highlights that the attitudes of the Samsa family are an indicator that humans may not have evolved that much. In modern urban society, identity is derived down to economic contribution, only having value as long as one can earn a salary at a dehumanizing job. People are artificially isolated, and ethical or familial values are degraded, especially if one is different. Gregor’s humiliating demise is an accurate reflection of humans in the current modernity of the technological era. Information systems and complex computer networks highlight the importance of material existence and the speed of its deterioration as more aspects of life move into cyberspace which is a “subversion of an ethical universe” (Michaelides 101). The insect, which is some horrendous vermin acting purely on automatic instinct is symbolic of the degradation of the human spirit which is disappearing within the modernity of technological achievement and social structures. However untenable the thought, humans are being reduced to digital files of information. Automation and such inorganic reality make humanity similarly primitive to that of an insect’s existence. Conclusion The Metamorphosis creates doubt about the assumptions of daily life. Relationships, social status, and materialistic success may be ambiguous and not matter in the end. Gregor’s transformation highlights the transitory nature of human life that can be affected by the slightest change of fortune. Remember, even when discussing ‘cycles’ within the world aspect of the Grand Dream, we are still discussing a ‘dream’.

Our solar system began entering what is called the Photo Belt in a 26,000 year cycle, in 1987 during what was referred to as The Harmonic Convergence and completed this ‘entrance’ in December 2012. This phase lasts approximately 2,000 years and represents a ‘relative ‘balance’ [what the mind calls ‘peace’] between the ‘inevitable opposites’ predestined to dance together as a result of the original ‘idea’ of SEPARATION … an illusion that is essential for the ‘appearance’ of the universe to come into existence … since Reality is EMPTY [the ONE SELF] with infinite potential.
None of it is ‘real’ but as said, IS essential in order to manifest a ‘stage’ upon which the ONE SELF can ‘know’ IT SELF.
This phase is called the Great SHIFT and no matter what forces and influences were dominating the phase before [in this case a patriarchy], this RELATIVE BALANCE ‘will and is’ unfolding as we speak. As the current saying goes: “Nothing can stop it”.
In the dream most call reality, this SHIFT is being played out by the change in administrations in the US … at least that is how most of humanity is experiencing it SO FAR. In reality it’s a GLOBAL event that is still mostly behind the scenes. The mind or false self that most call ‘me’ is experiencing this as a rapid change in the status quo of daily events … that few [at this precise moment] cannot miss. Many are already ‘reeling’ in disbelief as what was in place only weeks ago is being dismantled. Mostly, the shock is occurring with those who were deep-sleeping most of their lives and particularly for these last 4 years [dream years].
ALL these changes are designed very consciously to take-down the dysfunctional patriarchy whose ERA has only just ended and is currently known as the DEEP STATE [DS]. Remember, we are speaking of ‘actors’ on a grand stage playing out a dream-script with but ‘one’ Purpose – to remember Who We Really Are – The ONE SELF.
Over these next few months what humanity has called ‘normal’ WILL SHIFT dramatically and some of it will ‘shake’ many out of their deep sleep. This will be very traumatic for them and this is why MOST of the changes now occurring are being ‘presented’ to the world ‘piece-meal’ in tiny snippets [despite looking very large] so that the collective consciousness does NOT melt down with very challenging ‘kinetic’ consequences.
Be assured that what IS unfolding IS inevitable, is benign and IS heralding a moment in the dream that will be spoken of as ‘heaven on earth’ in the coming years. While those IN [so-called] control are largely UNAWARE of the larger picture [the one Purpose just spoken of], they ARE the conduits through which the LIGHT of this magnificent SHIFT is occurring.

DNF: The Poisons We Drink

Man, I wanted to like this one.
Set in a world where people who can use magic, called witchers, the mundane human population has reacted with less than stellar relationships. Powerful enough to hurt someone but weakened by common things like iron, the book follows Venus, a potion maker, has she navigates the complicated world of dysfunctional family drama and political oppression.
There is always a danger when you create a world with an oppressed people who have superpowers. The reason something like the X-Men can fall flat is that when you compare the oppression found in those stories with the oppression found in real life, it can feel a little more justified. After all, bigotry is stupid because we're all the same, but would it be so stupid if those you hated could shoot lasers from their eyes, or control the weather?
Thankfully, The Poisons We Drink avoids this trap, insofar as I read. The witchers may have spectacular powers, but when introduced to iron it can rapidly poison and burn them. There is a sense of, if not an even playing field, a dynamic one, not quite so one-sided. There is a great sense of the power that witchers represents, but also the power that is held over them by the system they live in. Pointedly, the main character is very capable of creating a love potion (a horrible intrusion on the personal choices of whomever its victim is) that is purchased for a grotesque amount of money to pay for a single purchase, demonstrating that while magical power is quite fearsome, economic power can be quite overwhelming as well.
But for all of this world building, the prose can be blunt. I understand it is a fantasy novel as well as a semi-alternate history novel, so you need to do some things to get people caught up, but man the exposition was not very good, nor particularly entertaining.
Building on that, the way information is delivered to the reader is blunt, and if I, of all people, can notice the bluntness it's got to be like five times as blunt for neurotypical people. Exposition will be delivered by the narrator and then a character will speak and deliver much the same information the narrator did. There are also a few notable scenes where characters are leaving an emotion unsaid that can be read in the subtleties of the scene, but then subtleties are lost when the narrator tells us how they're feeling. And I want to be clear when I say: this is beyond the scope of the main character being empathic. There are several creative descriptions of negative emotions ( the only emotions Venus can read ) that paint building tension during a spat or a fight. But emotion is different from context, and we get the context from the conversations the characters are having. Having the context in the conversation, and both the context and the emotion in the narration is kind of like looking at a red and blue 3D image when all you have is a single red or blue lens.
As for other, more minor complaints, I found a lot of the character interactions to be really wooden and functional at best. The best interaction I can remember off the top of my head is between the uncle and the mother, where there's so much emotional baggage that you can sense an argument wouldn't even be treading new ground. Most other interactions beyond that didn't create a character voice for me.
I'd recommend this novel for anyone getting into young adult fiction. As opposed to a lot of other dystopian novels that attempted to ape the success of The Hunger Games, this one feels less fantastic and more realistic even despite the less than mundane setting. The added element of the main characters being criminals also adds a wrinkle to the dystopian narrative: though our characters may be criminals, they were forced into it by the system, but they are also not fully innocent victims. That is an interesting aspect of this book: it insists you have respect and sympathy for someone who is not particularly nice or sympathetic. I think it's a good exercise for anyone who reads it to keep these two thoughts in their head while they see the events that play out. As for me, I'm just not interested right now. I may come back to it, or given that this author recently broken I might pick up the next book she writes. For now, I'm pressing on.

Shadows of the American Dream: Unpacking Class, Identity, and the Tethered in Us Before taking this class, I had never actually seen the film Us, despite the commercial success the movie reached, so I was delighted to find out that the film and themes in it would be a major piece for this course (plus, I love anything Lupita Nyong’o’s is in because of our shared Kenyan ancestry). While I may be shamed for this among the Black community, I am not afraid to admit that it was not until I got older that I really started to appreciate Jordan Peele’s work. When I first watched Get Out as a middle school student, I didn’t fully grasp the layers of social commentary the film portrayed, but over time, I have come to admire how Peele uses horror to explore deeper issues affecting the Black community. His films are not solely for entertainment or thrilling purposes – they are intentional and rich with social commentary and insight into the experience of the Black race, identity, and power, and the movie Us is no exception to this statement. It is a movie of suspense and anticipation, but above all else, Us tackles some issues surrounding how people live in society, who gets to thrive, who gets to thrive, and what it costs to fit in. One of my favorite aspects of the movie is how it deviates from typical portrayals of Blackness and Black families. The story centers on a wealthy, united Black family—Adelaide, her husband Gabe, and their children—living in a predominantly white suburban neighborhood, with a Black woman at the forefront of the narrative, challenging the stereotype of Black families being single-parent, struggling, and dysfunctional. Adelaide’s family literally survives because of their unitedness and refusal to leave anyone behind. The most powerful aspect of the movie to me, however, is its exploration of class and economic hierarchy. Adelaide’s family lives a very affluent life, including a nice house and brand new boat, contrasting vastly from the Tethered, who live underground, away from society in
filth. The Tethered represents marginalized groups and those seen as the “underclass.” In a way, the Tethered’s violence is a symbolic reawakening of the oppressed and the consequences of ignoring them. Peele does a phenomenal job of critiquing how the privileged remain disconnected from the struggles of those less fortunate. It’s a reminder that wealth and success can come with a price, and even the affluent are trapped in a system that ultimately leaves everyone enslaved to the idea of success.

Integrative Transcriptomics Reveals Layer 1 Astrocytes Altered in Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders with unclear pathophysiology despite a century-long history of intense research. Schizophrenia affects multiple networks across different brain regions. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is the region that connects the limbic system to cognitive areas such as the prefrontal cortex and represents a pivotal region for the etiology of schizophrenia; however, the molecular pathology, considering its cellular and anatomical complexity, is not well understood. Here, we performed an integrative analysis of spatial and single-nucleus transcriptomics of the postmortem ACC of people with schizophrenia, together with a thorough histological analysis. The data revealed major transcriptomics signatures altered in schizophrenia, pointing at the dysregulation of glial cells, primarily in astrocytes. We further discovered a decrease in the cellular density and abundance of processes of interlaminar astrocytes, a subpopulation of astrocytes specific to primates that localize in the layer 1 and influence the superficial cortical microenvironment across layer 1 and layers 2/3 of the cortex. Our study suggests that aberrant changes in interlaminar astrocytes could explain the cell-to-cell circuit alterations found in schizophrenia and represent novel therapeutic targets to ameliorate schizophrenia-associated dysfunction. http://dlvr.it/T8xPXK
