A good dessert:
Gingernuts
Whipped cream
Tin peach slices
Brandy
Doesn't need much brandy, just enough to dip the biscuits, but I do think you lose something if you don't have that tiny bite of alcohol paired with the ginger. Use the cheapest brandy you can find.
A harder, potentially cheaper, gingernut is also good to use here. The "better" brand that we get here started making their gingernuts very light and crisp, which is good for just eating them, but turns to literal mush in your hands when you dip them. You need something more substantial.
And then you layer them. This can get very messy, particularly in the summer, but it's worth it. The ginger and the brandy and the peach make a very lush, extravagant seeming pudding that feels classy, because it has a very intense flavour and isn't overly sweet and revolves around only a few complementary ingredients, but is fairly cheap to make and difficult to screw up in a way that makes it perfect for entertaining.
