hello! i’m so sorry if you’re not the right person to ask this, but i’m not sure who else to ask (if this is invasive or you know someone who is better equipped to answer the question, please let me know!!)
i know you do not like the term hard of hearing and much prefer the term deaf, i completely understand that and am NOT arguing about that. i was wondering what term may be preferred if i know somebody has a hearing disability but may not be deaf? is it just “hearing disabled” or is the term deaf still applicable?
thank you so much and i am so sorry for bothering you!! :)
deaf is still applicable! broadly speaking, within the community people consider anyone with hearing loss to be deaf. you could use hearing disability if you know someone actually identifies as disabled (not all d/Deaf people do) but it sounds a little awkward. there's also the abbreviation DHOH if you're talking about someone online, or just fully saying "deaf or hard of hearing" offline.
it's also worth mentioning that hard of hearing isn't an offensive term unless you're using it to strip someone of their identity. if you refer to someone as hard of hearing they probably won't be mad, you just might get corrected. it's only a problem if you know that someone identifies as d/Deaf and use hard of hearing anyways. (that's why it's a problem for me, I introduce myself as Deaf and people change it to hard of hearing because they don't think I'm "Deaf enough" my problem is with the action of having my identity stripped away not with the term)

Hallucinations and Poll
🗝️🏷️ hallucinations, flashbacks. Scroll to orange text for poll (last paragraph)
I hear and voices in the white noise. All the sounds that never left our head. Yelling in the rush of the faucet, singing in the electric hum of the fridge.
I feel the lofted bed shake as if the pounding is still at the door. Sometimes I see a child just turning the corner, sobbing or laughing in hushed tones.
When we tell our stories, we know what they will ask.
“Are you taking your meds?”
“Do you ever feel on top of the world?”
“Have you experienced psychosis in the past?”
All the distortions, the flow of then into now, none of them garner pity.
I can feel my heartbeat in my ears and I know I can’t hear those sounds anymore. Our ears don’t work like that in the present.
I wake up from screams I can’t locate; mine or other, here or back then. I’ve never been able to scream of my own accord.
Insiders hear it too. The authorities don’t care what the people in my head say, but it makes me feel less alone. Not all the same, we each dredge up our own trauma in our perceptions.
It’s pretty normal for PTSD. Echos of the past overlaying the present. Do other Deaf people hallucinate with non-auditory senses? Do you hear what you physically shouldn’t be able to?
I like the singing the best. Old hymns in the distance, organs and choirs barely audible in the blaring silence. It’s an awful kind of comfort, but it doesn’t get much better.
For the poll, consider d/Deaf an umbrella for any DHOH identity. If multiple apply, pick whichever you find most relevant. Feel free to add your experiences with other nonstandard senses related to hallucinations or flashbacks.

How does anyone dHOH or nonverbal manage to keep contact with doctors? Is there something that is only given to dHOH or nonverbal people for taking the place of phone calls, or is there nothing?
If I’m sick and can’t answer the doctor on the phone because of it, but they send me a text saying that they don’t consider texts to count as contacting them and to call(human typed and monitored btw here) to give them a reason for why I can’t make an appointment, what is the point of adding “or send us a text at xxx-xxx-xxxx!” to their system?
My other doctors wouldn’t offer options at all to me even when asked because misunderstandings and problems were happening because I would be stuck with no way to contact them when I needed to because of 3 reasons that cycle or stack up onto each other. Or because I got myself to call, but they can’t understand me for 2 of those reasons.
So, I don’t understand. Are they not adding anything to their systems that could make it accessible to anyone who’s dHOH? Nonverbal? Speech disorders? Phobias? Medical problems that get in the way of talking or hearing otherwise?
Only some of the doctors have video calling, too. Some now have systems for a health account with messages, but not all of them and they still say that messages don’t count, to call. & every time, I have to get a new doctor because I’m not going to call if I cannot call at the moment, and I’m not ok with some person leaving me 5 voicemails to tell me “I know you can’t call us right now because of xyz which is fair, and I’m sorry that’s happening, but you need to call us right now and say everything you sent in that text option or you owe us $185”.
I have to keep getting new doctors just because calling or walking in is the only option they’ll give me. I have bills from doctor offices who acknowledged over text that they read it and understood the reasons but still have to bill me because I didn’t tell them in person or over the phone with my voice to cancel or reschedule.
Is it that they legally have to have resources for dHOH and nonverbal patients to communicate, but don’t have to legally offer it to anyone else? Or that they seriously don’t even have anything for dHOH and nonverbal patients? Because that’s concerning if they rlly don’t have anything in place and don’t accept anything that’s not in verbal language from anyone.
I’m selectively mute(a bit more complicated/nuanced but nonetheless I go Mute=Not Capable of Vocalizations), have speech complications that lead to misunderstandings because people are too scared to ask me what I meant or to repeat it in a different format and make assumptions instead(ABOUT HEALTHCARE??? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU LMAO), I often do not have a phone that makes calls, I barely have service reaching my house so most calls are fucked up and cut off then they get pissy with me for living in an area with bad service, and it’s not easy for me to process what’s being said to me over the phone from the radio wave noise and issues processing between real and not real sounds and paranoia and swollen shut jaw and and
Guess you don’t have to worry about it if disabled people aren’t becoming your patients because they can’t fucking make an appointment with you.
My area sucks so bad sometimes lol

Hey the subtitles at the start of each watcher ep are ONLY joke ones *for that one single second with their logo on screen*, and the rest of the episode has fantastic subtitles for dhoh folx. If you watched their videos instead of overreacting to this one post you'd know this
leave me alone bro we're living different lives here and care about different things. I would care about what you're saying here if you'd said it with the intent to educate and inform instead of to fight or offend, but as you didn't, I do not

Hi I hope I'm not a bother!! I jist saw your blog and I was SO excited. I've been trying to learn ASL since this summer and I was wondering, do you happen to know of a reliable source to learn ASL grammar?? I would really appreciate the guidance 🙏
Hi, you're no bother at all! As I said in my "ask me anything" post, I'm more than happy to help other learners however I can. <3
ASL is tricky in that you can find a signing dictionary just about anywhere, but there don't seem to be a whole lot of resources for grammar outside of immersion. However, I recently came across a youtube channel called 'Learn How to Sign' that has some great videos on particulars like sentence structure, speaking in the affirmative versus the negative, etc that taught me some stuff I'd been wondering about for years.
Other than that, I've seen a lot of DHOH (Deaf/Hard of Hearing) people on tiktok teaching ASL and addressing particular, direct questions from their audience. I'd link them, but unfortunately I didn't do a very good job at saving them.
If anyone else has any resources they'd like to add, please feel free to! Or if anything I said was incorrect, please let me know and I'll fix it. Hope this helped! :)

I captioned yet another thing as a vent because haha Sad™ but this time it’s an EIA-608/EIA-708 hybrid that’s also formatted in a way that complies with the FCC standards for closed captioning but on tvs rather than Netflix/mobile stuff.
The formatting is supposed to aid in not blocking out major things being showcased on the display. However! I disliked the alpha opacity of the original closed captions on tv and how they’re formatted on EIA-608 ones, which are outdated and, frankly, ugly and distracting. Therefore, I’ve combined the EIA-708 and EIA-6078 formats and gave it a different font along with lowering the alpha opacity. I also try to make sure my captions align with captions fit for DHOH folks since accessibility is something not often found in most media.
Also we stan our queen Catra Elizabeth Applesauce Meowmeow and her mental breakdown caused by severe trauma :)
Haha anyway I may or may not have severe abandonment issues that caused me to literally do this (I threw pillows at the bed and punched them while sobbing) after my best friend said one(1) thing that lead me to believe they didn’t want to be my friend anymore and honestly? Vibe
