Discovery and conquest of the Caribbean Sea by the Spanish, 1492-1595.
« Westermann Großer Atlas zur Weltgeschichte », 1997
by cartesdhistoire
On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus reached San Salvador in what is now the Bahamas archipelago, then he discovered the northeast coast of Cuba and Haiti (La Española). During a second expedition, he discovered Dominica and Guadeloupe, then he explored the south coast of Cuba and discovered Jamaica (Santiago). His brother Bartolomé founded Santo Domingo in 1498. In 1508, Ponce de León named a harbor on the island Puerto Rico, which took its name, then he founded San Juan in 1511.
During his third voyage, in 1498, Columbus reached the island of Trinidad and discovered the mouths of the Orinoco River: the flow of the river indicated that the hinterland was much larger than the islands previously discovered. So, the idea of “mainland” began to emerge. In 1499, Alonso de Ojeda, accompanied by Amerigo Vespucci, explored the coast from east to west, starting from Guyana. On the shores of Lake Maracaibo, upon seeing Indians living in huts on stilts, he named this region “Venezuela”, meaning little Venice.
Rodrigo de Bastidas discovered the mouth of the Magdalena River and was the first to land on the Isthmus of Panama in 1500. During his fourth voyage, Columbus sailed along the coast of the isthmus from present-day Honduras (1502). Vasco Nuñez de Balboa founded Santa María la Antigua del Darién in 1510, the first permanent colony on the mainland, then he discovered the “South Sea” in 1513. Pedrarias Dávila founded Panama in 1519.
In 1528, Charles V granted the exploitation of Venezuela to Augsburg bankers, the Welsers. The expedition of Nicolás de Federmán reached the land of the Muiscas in the Andes in 1539.
The first European to ascend the Orinoco was Diego de Ordaz in 1531 (he was also the first European to reach the summit of the Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico). Where the Orinoco narrows the most, Antonio de Berrío founded the town of Santo Tomás de Guayana in 1595.
In the Andes, Benalcázar founded the Spanish Quito in 1534, then Popayán in 1537, and Jiménez de Quesada founded Santa Fe de Bogotá in 1538.

narcos fandom smut alphabet - finished!
you know what goes really well with summer sunshine and narcos tv rewatches? SMUTTY FIC!
Tumblr media
(they put that bisexual lighting on Isabella for a reason, after all!)
this was our first month of prompts over at @narcosfandomdiscord! for every letter of the alphabet, we had two smutty prompts that fanfic writers used for inspiration. 🥰 our group ambition was to create at least one fic per letter—26 new narcos smut fics during the month of July—and we totally smashed it, in large part thanks to prolific work from @salt-is-a-terrible-currency. happy reading!
if you prefer reading on ao3, check out our collection. all fics tagged as #nffalphabet on tumblr. and it's just that simple 🥰
if you have any questions, you can message us on tumblr or join our narcos fandom discord here!

Hello
I know I'm barely here anymore
But unfortunately the Ritalin shortage in Summer caused me to become hyperfixation on Overwatch, Gabriel Reyes/Reaper in particular (AGAIN), against my very will.
But I'm here to make it everyone else's problem again and have been challenged by @wildissylupus to post my Martina Reyes HCs (or basically character summary at this point)!!!
So
Here
We
GOOOOOO
(Please note I am Filipina, not Mexican or Latine at all, I'm trying my best to research, but please correct me if I'm wrong)
- 1st of all, for me it is Dr. Martina Nuñez-Reyes, women in STEM, iconic
- Born and raised in San Diego, in particular in or by Barrio Logan!
- She is specifically Nahua Mexican with family in Guerrero, Mexico. She has learned a lot of Precolonial History and mythology, both in school and from her family. She also speaks Nahuatl fluently, as well as Spanish and ASL.
- Sweet, nurturing, professional, good tempered, graceful, makes lots of bad puns (she and Winston got along great), but occasionally slips in some "joking" sadism and morbid curiosity.
- Loves perfume even though she can't wear it often due to her work in laboratories and hospitals, will wear even just a little bit even at home to enjoy it.
- joined a ballet folklorico troupe up until High School, but still remembers the moves well. Specializes in Guerrero style folklorico!
- Excellent cook, amazing baker. Loves to adapt recipes to include lots of spices. (This will come back later)
- Interested in the medical field, specifically medicine itself, after learning about how advanced Mesoamerican civilizations were medically.
- Martina was a regular prodigy, attending an advanced secondary school academy in Mexico City, before continuing on to get PhDs in Medicine, Chemistry, and Pharmaceutical Science by age 24.
- By age 26 she had already made strides by synthesizing and creating medicine that was able to do things like naturally accelerate healing in the body.
- That's also when the Omnic Crisis began. She was inducted by the United States Military among swathes of other skilled doctors to create the Super Soldier Serum for the Soldier Enhancement Program (SEP) at a hidden facility.
- Six months, they managed to get it to an acceptable loss rate of 25%, and test it on 100 Soldiers. She was in charge of overseeing the injections of 20 of the 100 randomly assigned under her, which included Soldier 24, Gabriel Reyes, and Soldier 76, Jack Morrison. It was also done in doses, not all at once.
- She and Gabriel were attracted to each other but didn't act on it for quite a bit, due to the taboo nature of a doctor and a patient. They didn't flirt either, but had moments of "Oh fuck they're hot" before shaking it off.
- After the second round of doses, she lost her first soldier, which made the risk of SEP all the more apparent to her.
- Remember when I mentioned she's good at baking? She stress bakes because it helps make a zen sort of ritual of following steps/regaining a small sense of control. The reason Gabriel loves cookies? It's because he woke up at 2AM catching her stress baking a batch of Chili Chocolate Chip Cookies. It's where they had a heart to heart about Gabriel and the other Enhanced Soldiers trusting Martina and the doctors no matter the risk because they know they're liable to die in the Crisis anyway if they can't make headway.
- As the Crisis gets more dire, the General orders the doctors at the SEP facility to also go through basic military training, which Martina disliked, so she never really went past a machine pistol.
- 33 Soldiers make it out, and she sent with them on missions to retake cities across America. She wouldn't always be an active combatant, but she could hold her own if she had to.
- When Gabriel Reyes and Jack Morrison were selected to the elite Overwatch core team, she helped lead their medical support team. Also yes during this whole time, Gabriel and Martina still were attracted to each other but still sort of afraid to act because not only is she still his Doctor, he's now her commanding officer.
- Also during this period she helps treat a young Angela Ziegler during the bombing of Zurich.
- After fighting alongside Inti Warriors (Specifically Illari's dad) to help retake part of Central and South America, Gabriel almost died, which caused her to go full BAMF, and save him.
(Jack: "... can someone please tell me why our medic is rushing in alone, guns blazing?")
- They have to repair ships and stuff, so they decide to take R&R in reclaimed Guerrero, where Martina shows Gabriel around, and they end up dancing together. It's where they finally give in and end up in a relationship.
- Get married the last year of the Omnic Crisis, and have a son a few years later named Izel (who is the grown man with a family in my heart and soul in the Reflections Comic)
- Dr. Martina Nuñez-Reyes is the first Head of Medicine in Overwatch's Golden Age because goddamnit someone had to have that position before Angela.
- She's also Angela's mentor and sort of like an adoptive mom, Angela absolutely idolized her
Here's where my Canon deviates hard, because Blizzard's timeline makes no sense
(Fun fact this next part exists because I misread Code of Violence and thought that the ash and burning was from Gabriel's memories of Echo Park and not where he was so I straight up thought Martina was fridged a whole ass year before I heard the voicelines and reread it for clarity, but she's not fridged. Just stay with me.)
- On Izel's 6th birthday in Echo Park, there was an attempted assassination via explosions that caused Izel to lose his left arm and replace it with a prosthetic (the man in the Reflections comic has his left arm in his pocket)
- It also very nearly kills Martina, who is 6 MONTHS PREGNANT WITH THEIR DAUGHTER, Graciela
- The family lives, and Graciela has to be c-section delivered prematurely
- This ofc enrages Martina and Gabriel who, after recovery, hunt the motherfucker down to kill.
- It is not a quick death. Martina synthesizes POISON to make that fucker die screaming. (Basically I wanted to flip the Dead Wife trope where the wife lives and is FUCKING PISSED AND JOINS HER HUSBAND ON A ROARING RAMPAGE OF REVENGE)
- Oh yeah and that triggers the birth of Blackwatch lmao.
- Gabriel brought Cole Cassidy home for Christmas where she immediately enfolds Cole into the family.
- Martina and Gabriel also help Cole get his GED.
- Oh yeah Blackwatch
- So Martina supplies the poisons for coercion, torture, and assassination (and torture) to Blackwatch under the table for super covert missions, basically even people at Blackwatch didn't even know about. Ma'am was committing war crimes to keep the world and her babies safe. All while keeping up the sweet, dedicated, professional facade for like 14 years.
- Gabriel tries to get her to make another super soldier serum so he can be stronger, she refuses, they argue, him calling her a hypocrite, and it looks bad, UNTIL
- Shit happens and she accidentally lets a poison slip that gets reverse engineered and kills a lot of people, causing her to retire and Mercy steps up. Gabriel keeps her secret and they end up staying together
- HOWEVER, once the Venice Incident happens and Izel disowns his father, she chooses to not back up Gabriel's choices, whereas their daughter Graciela does, causing them to be separated but still married.
- Gabriel considers leaking her secret, but loves her too much to/wants the kids to have at least one parent they don't detest
- After the Swiss Explosion, Martina and Graciela mourn very badly, Izel rekindled his relationship with his mother but not Graciela
(Izel needs his own post probably lmao)
- Martina tries to move on, but finds she can't.
- listen once a man is willing to cover up war crimes for you, it's a very hard standard to meet
- She rejects the recall initially but to avoid this post from being even longer REASONS, Graciela goes with/gets kidnapped by (it's complicated) Talon, which is how Cole finds out Gabriel is Reaper
- Joins in to get her daughter back, and to redeem herself because she realizes how much destruction she caused even if people deserved it... lowkey she even doesn't fully regret it depending on the person she killed
- Her abilities are she got a CPR glove that can shock people in one hand that can pull Medicated/poison grenades out of a storage and a Pistol in the other and she can inject peeps with medication close quarters.
- She's like 63 currently also (in my Canon, Gabriel got a significant age bump with a bunch of other characters, he is 67 but is technically frozen at age 58)
- blizzard if you read this and wonder why I turned this nameless, possibly faceless character into someone that's committed war crimes, I don't got a fucking clue either
- wildissylupus I'm so sorry for subjecting you to this, like how I will subject my friends to a PowerPoint presentation about my character lore and alternate overwatch timeline on my birthday

I finally have ✨️the list✨️
these are all the characters competing, first two rounds will be randomized, then I will make a bracket out of the remaining competitors
polls won't start until at least this Wednesday as I'm having a very busy weekend and I still need to compile all the images, so in the meantime, if you wanna submit some images to help me out, please do!! images without backgrounds are the end goal and would be the most helpful but finding the images is what takes the most time so if you have one please send them!! you can via asks or dms. if you send via asks I won't post them and anons are still on if that makes it easier. once I get some I'll cross out the ones I have so you guys know what to submit
thanks everyone, and I'm sorry you guys had to wait this long!!!

MITOS EN AMÉRICA
MITO 7: LA SANTA INQUISICIÓN MATÓ A MILLONES DE INDÍGENAS
Tumblr media

Cinematography: Javier Julia. Production design: José Massolo, María Clara Notari. Film editing: Pablo Barbieri Carerra, Damián Szifron. Music: Gustavo Santaolalla.
Cast: "Pasternak" -- Maria Marull, Dario Grandinetti, Mónica Villa.
We don't see the "anthology film" of the type represented by Wild Tales much any more, except in movies like Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994) that take a group of somewhat interrelated stories and intercut them with one another. Damián Szifron's movie is unabashedly a group of six short films that bear no essential relation to one another, except that they all deal with people at the breaking point and they all produce a macabre laughter. The movie was Argentina's entry in the best foreign language film category for the 2014 Oscars. (It lost to Pawel Pawlikowski's Ida.) Wild Tales takes off even before the credits with the mood-setting "Pasternak," in which a group of passengers on a plane all discover that, though they are strangers to one another, they are all in some unfortunate way acquainted with the plane's pilot who has ingeniously managed to get them on board together. (The pilot's murderous and suicidal intent is such an eerie foreshadowing of the May 2015 crash of Germanwings Flight 9525 that some theaters showing the film posted a warning.) My favorite  of the episodes is "El más fuerte" ("The Strongest"), in which a road-rage incident snowballs to a deadly and hilarious conclusion reminiscent of a Warner Bros. cartoon in which Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck try to annihilate each other. My least favorite is probably the concluding one, "Hasta que la muerte nos separe" ("Until Death Us Do Part"), which depicts a wedding reception gone splendidly awry. It goes on too long, I think, but like all of the episodes it scores some satiric hits on its target, the wedding business. Other targets include the urban bureaucracy (everyone who has ever grumbled at the DMV will appreciate this one), the legal establishment, and the media's headlong rush to judgment.

US Fentanyl Crisis: Uniting for Action and Healing
Tumblr media
Secretary Blinken and Treasury Department Lead Joint Effort
In a resolute move to tackle the devastating overdose epidemic, the United States has intensified its multi-pronged approach, partnering closely with the Mexican government to designate three key members of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel. These individuals have been implicated in the illicit trafficking of fentanyl and other lethal drugs. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, spearheading this effort, highlighted the imperative of a comprehensive strategy aimed at curbing the global health and security threats posed by synthetic drugs.   Combating the Crisis Through Strengthened Measures The rise in the production and trafficking of synthetic drugs has exacerbated the opioid overdose epidemic in the United States. This issue has not gone unnoticed by President Biden, whose National Drug Control Strategy emphasizes bolstering public health while systematically dismantling criminal networks profiting from American deaths. As part of this broader mission, today's designations mark a pivotal step in disrupting the flow of illicit fentanyl and its precursors into American communities. By targeting key players in the drug trade, the U.S. government aims to starve criminal organizations of the funding vital for their operations, underscoring the nation's dedication to saving lives on a global scale.
Trio of Designations Strikes Blow to Cartel Operations
In a concerted effort to impede the illicit trafficking of deadly substances, the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has taken significant action. Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian E. Nelson expressed the gravity of this move, stating that it aims to disrupt all aspects of the drug supply chain, effectively crippling criminal entities that perpetuate the crisis.   Collaboration at the Core of Success This synchronized initiative between the U.S. and Mexican governments showcases the power of collaboration. La Unidad de Inteligencia Financiera, Mexico's Financial Intelligence Unit, played a vital role in this joint endeavor. Close coordination with various law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration's San Diego Field Division and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's San Diego Field Office, has led to the identification and designation of these high-profile figures.
Arzate Garcia Brothers and Felix Nuñez: The Architects of Mayhem
Among those designated are Alfonso Arzate Garcia and his brother, Rene Arzate Garcia. Operating as influential "plaza bosses" for the Sinaloa Cartel in Baja California, Mexico, they oversee drug trafficking operations, particularly in Tijuana and neighboring areas. Their involvement in importing substantial quantities of illicit substances, including fentanyl, into the U.S. has further deepened the crisis. The Arzate Garcia brothers, known for their extreme violence, also play a role in executing enforcement actions, such as kidnappings and executions.   A Criminal's Evolution and Continued Pursuit Rafael Guadalupe Felix Nuñez, also known as "El Changuito Antrax," has a history steeped in criminal activity. Beginning his career as a hitman for the Sinaloa Cartel, he evolved into a significant leader within the organization. After a daring escape from prison, Felix Nuñez solidified his position as a ruthless Sinaloa Cartel leader in the city of Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico. This port city, a gateway for illicit drugs, holds a pivotal role in the global drug trade, making Felix Nuñez a significant player in the network's operations.
Sanctions Echo Bold Intentions
These designations, executed under Executive Order 14059, underline the U.S. government's resolve to counter the international proliferation of illicit drugs. Through this order, all property and interests in the U.S. belonging to these individuals are blocked and subject to reporting. Entities that are at least 50 percent owned by these designated figures are also subject to the same restrictions, demonstrating the comprehensive nature of this strategy.   Unyielding Commitment to Public Health and Safety By taking these decisive measures, the United States is signaling its unyielding commitment to protecting public health and safety. These actions contribute to the Biden-Harris Administration's comprehensive approach to combatting the overdose epidemic, which combines efforts to treat addiction and cut off the drug trafficking profits that fuel the crisis. This approach aligns with the President's Unity Agenda, exemplified by substantial investments in public health initiatives spanning research, prevention, treatment, and recovery support services.
A Path Forward: Holding Criminal Actors Accountable
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), in collaboration with U.S. and international partners, remains steadfast in its mission to hold foreign illicit drug actors accountable. The power of OFAC sanctions rests not only in designations but also in their potential removal, contingent upon a demonstrated positive change in behavior. This overarching goal of fostering positive change underscores the administration's unwavering commitment to global health and security. In an era plagued by the catastrophic consequences of illicit drug trafficking, the actions taken today by the United States, in tandem with Mexico, serve as a beacon of hope. Through a united front and a multi-faceted strategy, these nations stand resolute in their pursuit of dismantling criminal networks, saving lives, and restoring security to communities.   Sources: THX News, The Treasury & US Department of State.
