Is there a reason why Endeavor is such a popular character within the fandom despite his arc that isn’t very convincing or well done? Or would you say as an atonement it is well done. Despite only wanting to change after achieving what he wanted?

I think it's a number of factors:

Endeavor's popularity rose with him getting flashy fights (first in the anime-only scenes in the Stain arc and then the pro hero arc). I think it's undeniable that him being "badass" in a traditionally masculine sense was a huge factor in his support increasing in the fandom. And even when he spouts really outrages things (like how he's going to keep his eyes on Touya, when in fact he doesn't), as long as he shoots lasers from his ass, some people will not notice the hypocrisy.

I feel like his atonement arc was pretty well-written between Kamino and Ch 252 - from first realizing what he did to his family, to trying to redeem himself through hero work and then getting rejected by the family and finally being able to offer nothing but distance. However, Endeavor surviving the PLF-war, his family supporting his hero job, while at the same time Endeavor put his family last and kept running away from Touya really regressed this arc. But there was already this perception in the fandom that "Endeavor is the best-written character" which meant that people shut down valid criticism of how Act 3 destroyed what was good in it in Act 2.

He was propped up by his ties to a lot of very popular characters. Hawks obviously is the most prominent example. Hawks was widely popular when he was introduced and was already being used to give us a different version of Endeavor than Shoto's version. But also Bakugou and Deku - especially him being good teacher to Deku. All Might talking to him at length in the Remedial arc and worrying about him. Burnin'. Best Jeanist. Everyone who interacts with Endeavor, all cool characters, constantly praise him and raise him up. And of course there is the ambivalent, but somewhat improving relationship with Shouto (another fan favorite) that gets distorted into the "clueless doting dad" trope in the anime, movies, spin-offs, games etc.

Endeavor's crimes are relatable to a lot of the male audience. I think we can't ignore the number of incels / men holding toxic masculine views in the anime, especially shonen anime community. These people genuinely believe that Endeavor's crimes are exaggerated, because they do believe that a wife or children are a man's property and as long as he provides for them in the physical sense, he fulfills his obligations.

Having said that - I'm not sure how popular Endeavor is truly. I feel like he's more a niche character with obviously a strong and faithful supporter basis. Popularity poll results are one thing because in Japan, this was always paid stuff and the global poll had massive scale cheating (remember how low Endeavor was in Week 1?)

And if you look at merch, Endeavor is often left out of line-ups because there is not enough demand other than some high-end merch targetted at the EndHawks shipping community and some action figures. I think Endeavor fans and EndHawks fans in the fujoshi community tend to be a bit older than the average fan age, so they would have more disposable income to buy merch, but I think their number (observing the more low-end merch sales evolution) is not massive.

Hi, sorry for this very random and weird message, but this idea about Hawks has been in the back of my head for a long time and I wanted to share it with someone and also I love how you characterize and write Hawks, so I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

So I HATE EndHawks as a ship but the idea of Hawks having a small crush on Endeavor is interesting to me. Specifically, the idea of Hawks being in the middle of a love triangle with Endeavor vs y/n, but in a way where he ends up having a lot of realizations about himself and his attachment to Endeavor. Like, he realizes how he's been putting Endeavor on this pedestal as his savior when really, he was the one who saved himself, and his ideal version of Endeavor is different from the real version. And also realizing that his relationship with Endeavor is pretty one-sided whereas y/n unconditionally loves and supports him and that actually made him lean more towards Endeavor at first because he doesn't understand how to accept someone loving him as a person and not just viewing him as a tool or acquaintance. But at the end, he learns to accept y/n's love and hold a more realistic view of Endeavor as a person.

Sorry for all the giant pile of words, I just wanted to get this off my chest.

Honestly this is such a fascinating take! I am very pleased with how deeply Horikoshi goes into Hawks' parasocial relationship with Endeavor and why that is, but you are right that it doesn't get resolved, so to speak. Afaik.

I do wonder if Hawks will ever realize how he puts Endeavor on a pedestal and why exactly he is so attached to him. I think Hawks very quietly has realizations about Endeavor when it is revealed how he treated his family. He gets quite serious around Endeavor for a minute and pauses to scrutinize and analyze him. Even questions him regarding Shoto's abuse; but he ultimately makes his own decision to support him (which is in accordance with Hawks' values and was very in-character).

I think Hawks having a crush is a very interesting angle and one I would like to hear more about, if for nothing else than my own interest in all things psychodynamic in fiction because it is extremely fun.

Agh. Hawks accepting love that is unconditional... Oh, that is so hard for him. That is genuinely so scary for him. I keep thinking about the kids in bnha, including Tokoyami, saying he should be protected too and the absolute terror on his face when they said that. How deeply he protested it at first.

"You don't have to be alone anymore" is one of those phrases that makes Hawks' eyes go round. The idea of being loved and supported for real is extremely difficult for him. He is used to being a lone act. Because it's efficient, but also because it's safe— not for him, but for others. Hawks doesn't care about his own safety except to calculate whether or not he can be more of use alive than dead.

I agree with you that he would not know what to even do with unconditional love and support. I do suspect he would reject it at first in favor of what he knows (parasocial attachment). I would love to see how he grows and progresses in a situation like that!

Funny, tangentially related: I started watching My Hero Academia once and quit because it was very overstimulating in the first couple of episodes. What made me go back and start actually watching it for real was porn.

There's an incredibly talented porn artist who draws almost exclusively EndHawks. (The show is about teens, but these characters are both adults.) I became curious about the characters through his diverse and varied takes through many different alternate universes.

So I went back and started watching again. That's how I came to gradually realize that 1) several adults from the show are in his content, 2) these versions have nothing to do with the originals except for appearance and sometimes quirks, 3) I was actually interested in the plot and characters of the show in a non-porn related way.

If it wasn't for this very extra-canonical material (I still subscribe to him; I have literally never seen someone draw anatomy prettier and simultaneously as accurately), I never would have gone back to the source media. If I had only interacted with this extra-canonical material, I never would have had any idea about the actual characters of the show, either.

I also saw some GhostSoap porn that was pretty well drawn, but the source material for that was a first person shooter that looked like a series of bummers to me, so I let that one go.

mini rant im so sorry but my god im so tired of seeing endhawks content be like the vast majority of hawks content, i adore hawks but literally everything of him is either him getting shipped with a man twice his age who he's admired since he was a child, or that mans abusive son (i get fandom but there could not be a healthy dabihawks but i see the appeal, just wish it was so ooc) hawks is a really lonely character like he doesnt really have friends and doesnt interact with a lot of ppl meaningfully but do people HAVE to cling onto some of the worst possible ships for him my god. He literally saw endeavour as his hero as a child, like he 'saved' him, how are ppl not finding that weird??? "hawks is an adult now" he barely is in japan, doens't changed how he's viewed endeavour for almost his entire life, endeavour literally has a kid older than AND the same age as hawks. I'm not a huge fan myself (don't hate him, just not a character that automatically clicked w/ me) but man gets stuck with the shittiest ships /hj.

Db/hwks i kind of get, i guess? I can see the appeal in the fanon version & it has cute fanart, even if it's not for me. That 1 is more of me being very specific with how I like my enemies-to-lovers ships & the canon version making me go :/. But like- they're both in the same age range so it doesn't squick me out quite as much.

But him & end/eavor just seems so weird to me, especially because he's around the age of his daughter. Like sure they're both legal but there's a clear...i dont wanna fully say weird power dynamic but there's a difference in stuff like experience & other things like that. Hawks has looked up to End/eavor since he was really young so i just..can't see their dynamic ever working out in a completely healthy way.

So the first ship I had that was in a proper fandom space was,,, oh god it was thorki. Don't judge me, I was 12. I've moved on significantly from that point.

Goodfellas, I think? I'd never seen it before. Obviously as a Goncharov fan I enjoyed seeing Mr De Niro but other than that, I didn't enjoy it much. I think I hated every single character.

Reaffirming Faith with Mournful Chirps - hawks gets hit by a quirk that makes him really protective of tokoyami, it’s shenanigans until it gets deep and made me cry

Know Too Much - dabihawks, haven’t read the latest chapter of this one yet, but dabi captures hawks after the raid and they hash out their feelings. it gets really emotional and characterises them both really well!

A Tree to Perch On - hawks is de-aged, remembers nothing, and endeavor essentially has to adopt him (and yes, there is a lot of focus on how that’s potentially a very bad idea. other characters act super realistically about it). cute and in depth!!

The Sword of Damocles is Swinging - we’ve all read this masterpiece right? right? @prince-liest only went and wrote an awesome multi chapter study of hawks’ entire character and it’s glorious

Watch Your Tongue - hawks has a tongue piercing and it gets him into shenanigans. it’s crack and pretty silly but the characterisation is solid and the interactions with other characters are insightful! well written as a whole and it deserves more attention!!

a case of regret - a short piece about hawks just after he’s taken in by the hpsc. it’s heart wrenching, painful, and the child POV wraps it all up in a whole ball of hurt :)

do not call me back to say goodbye - dabihawks, post-apocalypse. people have been turned into mutated monsters but hawks is only half turned. monster!hawks is really, really cool but heartbreaking and the development of his and dabi’s relationship is masterful. this one has a prequel i’d recommend reading too!

and I still believe that I cannot be saved - a meeting between edgeshot and hawks that hits all the sweet spots for hawks interacting with other pros, beautiful, stunning, i covet this

butterfly effect (or lack thereof) - this one is endhawks and i get if that’s not for you but i decided to try it and it left me... different, idk. hit hard. set a little while in the future, a child version of hawks appears and hawks and enji have to deal with that and all the emotions it stirs up. basically a really poignant study of how hawks’ childhood shaped him

Lies - hawks/twice, a bittersweet moment before the raid, made me feel all kinds of things. even if you’re not that into the ship it’s a beautiful read and explores hawks’ inner conflict so well!!

A Room with No Shadows - a series of fics, I haven’t finished it yet but the characterisation pulls no punches. the league kidnaps tokoyami and hawks has to work out how to keep them both alive. very focused on the bird bro relationship and the darker aspects of hawks’ character

as usual during this quarantine, i went through a challenging quest, searched through every single fic on ao3 about a single ship and made a rec list, ended up with around 25 works out of 630. nearly all of them should be free of explicit, problematic and triggering content besides one or two in the mature content sense. and i’ll note those down separately but i always suggest reading the tags before starting a fic regardless the rating, just so you know what you’re diving into. furthermore, there’s this author note at the end of a fic that i’ve found which pretty much sums up my feelings about a mess that’s called todoroki friggin’ enji:

Ok, so, this is based on how I perceive canon Hawks, or more specifically, canon Keigo as the Hawks persona is damn-near its own character.

Canon Keigo is an insecure man (he's made comments about not having faith in his abilities as a hero and "his back not being broad enough" to make the public feel safe) who has had very little control in his life and is painfully aware of that fact. While it's also true that he's largely resigned to that fact, he also has called out the president of the Commission for being cruel. He also, for as much as he claims not to be, is an incredibly self disciplined and controlled person. He's a spy and very likely an assassin if he truly filled the same role as Lady Nagant. We also know for certain now that insubordination against the Commission meant a bullet between the eyes. Not to mention before all of that, he is a childhood abuse survivor where he himself has said that the only thing he could do to survive while still with his parents (father specifically) was sit there and endure it.

I honestly don't think a person who was raised in an environment like that, where it was submit or die every day of his life up until a couple of months ago at the current point in the manga (aka until just after the raid arch when Redestro destroyed the Commission) would get off on the idea of being submissive in this aspect as well.

Now, I am not saying that Keigo, who probably has little to no sexual experience at this point in the canon, would jump right in the deep end and start acting as a dom for his first time. Hell, it probably takes him a while to get into BDSM at all, because its overwhelming and one should REALLY do their research on proper safety and etiquette before actually joining the scene.

Hell, even when he does finally try BDSM, i can see him subbing his first couple times to get a taste for it. But I don't think he'd enjoy it. Giving up control is scary at the best of times and he has pretty severe trauma attached to having no control or power. I think that he would find a lot more pleasure in actually taking control and would get off on the power and confidence being the dominant one would give him.

I mean, for a lot of people who are into BDSM (but obviously not everyone) they desire what they lack in their daily lives. Those who either have a lot to control (like people in powerful positions or a lot of responsibilities) or who feel as though they have to have control over everything (such as myself, I've got anxiety and if I'm not in control of pretty much everything in my day to day life I get super anxious and panicky) tend to be subs so they can escape from the pressure and just feel good. Those that lack control in their daily life or who often feel powerless tend to be doms. (Again, this is not everyone, this is just a generalization I feel fits to Hawks and a few other characters. It's way more complex for most real people).

Going into more fanon stuff, I think a lot of the more popular characters shipped with him, such as Dabi and Endeavor, are both subs, though different kinds of subs (though in all honesty, HotWings and EndHawks both make me uncomfortable for various reasons.)

Of course, this is all ultimately fanon but I wanted to give a more fleshed out version of my thoughts and my basis for them.

Why do people think Hawks is a sub? That man is not a sub. Like at all.

Hawks has never had control of anything in his life. Ever. He is literally government property, the Commission bought him from his mom when he was like 6. Do you really think he gets off on giving up control in the bedroom?

No! That man is a dom. Maybe a dom-leaning verse, but he is NOT a sub. Now, remember, dom does not equal top and sub does not equal bottom. When it comes to that, I see him as a switch who more or less equally enjoys both. But he does not enjoy subbing. At least not nearly as much he enjoys finally taking control of something in his life.
