while out and about lucanis stands up too quickly and promptly passes out because he's barely drunk anything but coffee and he hasn't sleep in a week and he's got injuries that are still in various stages of healing and despite all this whenever Rook asks him if he wants to come with them on an excursion he says yes without hesitation because Rook Saves Him so that he could Do A Job and even ignoring the job Rook Saved Him and he has to make it Worth It and so no matter how his body feels physically Lucanis Will Go Wherever Rook Asks because He Can Not say no to them (he very much can Rook would not be mad at him if he said that he was hurt and tired and had a headache so bad that he could barely see straight but he can still see straight enough to throw a knife so he's not going to say no)

Alex woke up the sound of a ladder being dropped on the floor.

Then, Clyde complaining.

“On Six’s name, Simon, what was that for?”

Alex opened their eyes slowly, turning over to the two velidgun bickering on the other side of the nest.

“The paint on the side of the barn is chipping, and I need help with it” Clyde rolled its eyes. “And?”

Simon gave Clyde an exasperated look “and you’re going to help”

Clyde rolled over, giving Simon an icy look. “Come on Simon, aren’t you supposed to be the good one? That’s why Six hates you so much”

Simon crossed their arms “Charming” they said, face deadpan “but unlike our creator, I have a barn to keep clean and two people to house, so you’re going to pull your weight.”

Clyde snarled “The human has a bullet wound, Simon.” Simon looked confused for a moment “I never said anything about Alex”

Clyde blinked a couple times, seeming like it had said something it shouldn’t have. It rolled its eyes and crawled out of the nest. Alex turned back to Simon, then sat up, turning to stand up.

“I can help, if you want.” They said, the turned to follow Clyde. “No it’s fine” Simon said, reaching out like they were trying to grab their shoulder but remembered what would’ve happened.

“It’s fine Simon,” they turned to Simon “I’ve been healing, really fast for some reason.”

Simon looked past them, sharing a concerned look with Clyde. “Clyde, don’t tell me-“

“Yes” Clyde cut them off nervously “it’s fine”

Alex turned to it with a concerned look on their face. “What are you talking about?” They asked. Clyde moved slightly closer to them “it doesn’t matter, I’ll explain later”.

Alex looked back to Simon, then followed Clyde outside

Alex balanced precariously on the latter, painting the side of the barn with white paint. Clyde was holding the paint can in its tail, painting the wall with much less enthusiasm.

“So,” Alex broke the silence “what was that about, with Simon”. Clyde paused, putting the paint can down on the ground. “It’s not important right now”

“It sounded important,” Alex responded, gliding the paintbrush closer to Clyde’s side “who exactly is Six?”

Clyde froze, almost dropping the brush. They cringed, and clenched their teeth. Maybe they shouldn’t have asked. They turned back the the wall.

“Us veldigun, we aren’t exactly natural,” Alex paused, then placed their brush down, focusing on it’s words. They stepped off the latter. “We were put on this world to cause madness, by what you humans would probably call a god,” Alex stumbled back in shock.

“It’s only known as Six. There are always six veldigun, there were veldigun before Me, Winfrey, Simon and the Flock, but when they die they are eventually replaced so there can be six. Me and Winfrey are the oldest pair I know of, Simon and the Flock came next. There are probably two I don’t know of somewhere” It paused “I hear it sometimes” it’s voice barely above a whisper, turning to Alex, before pausing at the look on their face.

“What does it sound like?” they sounded desperate, leaving Clyde confused. “What are you talking about-”

”Clyde please” Alex grabbed its shoulders, there was a desperation in their voice that it hadn’t seen from them since they had found Winfrey.

Clyde cleared its nonexistent throat. Trying to imitate the voice of its creator felt vaguely blasphemous, but Alex’s fear made it need answers as much at it did.

“Like this I believe”. It blinked. It had gotten shockingly close. Its attention was quickly stolen by Alex, their breaths getting shallow and panicked. “No no no no no” they muttered to themself.

“Human?” Clyde extended a claw slowly. “I’ve been hearing that voice Clyde,” their words were barely a whisper, “I don’t know what’s happening to me”

It gritted its teeth. “I think I might”

“Wait, conversion?”

Clyde gritted its teeth “it’s the best theory I have. You’d already be dead if it was veldigun sickness and you’ve been hearing, it” it paused, then turned back to Alex, their eyes crinkling at the edges in concern.

“Then why do I still look, human?” They asked. Clyde paused “remember what I said about my….our illusions?” Their eyes widened “they start subconsciously”

Alex took another pause “so I’ve been making myself, look human?”

“I assume” it shrugged. They two sat in silence for a minute. “Do I think I could, drop the illusion?”

Clyde stiffened “I guess” it said. Alex focused, and Clyde cringed slightly.

“Stop” they turned to the velidgun “you’re dropping an illusion, not creating one. Relax.” They gave it a small smile then closed their eyes.

Then, there were more eyes than just the closed ones.

Clyde stumbled back as six purple eyes blinked open in Alex’s hair, locked on it with utter apathy.

Alex opened their eyes as the new ones closed. “Did it work?” Clyde nodded quickly.

“Guys, the barn isn’t finished,” Their head whipped around to see Simon walking towards them. It saw the other eyes open in a panic, “if you needed help you could’ve asked-“ They froze, staring at Alex.

They turned to it, a look of confusion and shock dawning in their face. Clyde was blinking rapidly, crooked eyes widening. The two velidgun looked at each other, Clyde’s teeth bared back in nervousness.

Hi! Your BFF collage for Nate and Mallory made me very curious about them. What are their first impressions of each other (you mentioned a bit for Nate, but what did Mallory think about him?)? How does their friendship develop? No pressure to answer ♥️

Mallory and Nate are an interesting combo for sure. Mal is a pessimist, sarcastic, and rather apathetic at times, whereas Nate is obviously none of those things.

She tends to be suspicious of kind people, assuming they want something from her or are trying to get her guard down enough to take advantage of her. This is actually part of the reason that she immediately felt secure around Morgan, because she just laid it all out with her “I don’t want to be here and I don’t like you” attitude (which obviously didn’t last too long 🥰).

So meeting Nate, who was all bright smiles, open body language, and kind words put her on edge. She didn’t play nice with him, she made it clear she wasn’t happy any of them were there disrupting her case, and she wasn’t going to fall for his “sweetheart” facade. Until she started to realize that maybe it wasn’t a facade and she was being a dick for no reason (took a little bit for her to get to that point).

As for Nate’s impression of her, I think he pretty quickly came to understand how she operated. He didn’t take anything she said personally, especially because she wasn’t exactly wrong in being suspicious of them. Mallory shot Adam at Farris Wheelhouse, and if it weren’t for the fact that Adam didn’t have a wound, she probably would have kept pushing the topic until she heard what she knew was the truth.

They had a rough road until she was told they were vampires, and then hit another bump when Nate made that suggestion that she gets closer with Rebecca (or however that scene went, it’s been a minute haha). Mallory did not take kindly to his input there. All of my detectives have varying dynamics with Rebecca.

Iris is close with her, but has a lot of anxiety around the idea of her leaving for good.

Reina is just hurt. They’re not close, they probably won’t ever be close. She just wanted a mom and she never got that, so she’s angry in a “what did I do to deserve that” kind of way.

Sophie is very neutral about Rebecca, they’re not close, but there’s not necessarily any hurt or anger there. There’s potential for growth in their relationship.

But Mallory… oh she hates Rebecca. It’s a serious, bone deep hatred that doesn’t have a chance to leave. Mallory doesn’t want to be close with her, she wants Rebecca to stop trying to be close. If she never saw her again, she’d be perfectly fine with that. Unfortunately, that disdain has also extended to Rook, though it manifests differently. I’ll leave that for my deep dive on Mallory though.

The point here being, Nate prioritizes family, where Mal has never been prioritized by her family, so she couldn’t give a shit less about them either. So him suggesting she repair a relationship that she wasn’t the one to damage… She Did Not Like That.

I think the first time she starts to chill out and understand that Nate is just a well-meaning and genuinely kind person is that cafe scene in book 1, where he’s eating a muffin and making kissy noises at a dog 😭. That’s when she just has a moment of “oh, he’s actually just like that” and she starts doing the exact thing she swore she wouldn’t do: she lets her guard down. She stops being rude to him, stops being so quick to snap, and finds that she actually enjoys being around someone who is kind to her because he wants to be.

It’s really just up from there, by book 3 they’re very close. She hugs him in the hallway and preps breakfast with him; it’s the first time she’s had a friendship that’s just easy. Or any kind of relationship, really.

I said in the tags of her collage that Morgan brings out parts of her she’s kinda scared of showing, where Nate brings out the safe and comfortable. She feels safe in sharing her passions and hobbies with Nate, it allows her to display things she’s good at in good company. Cooking, baking, problem-solving, language-learning, debate—all of it can be shared with Nate. Morgan brings out emotions in her and that’s scary for someone who is honestly really traumatized but refuses to admit it.

Nate is a stable platonic companion that she’s been missing her entire life (I’m sorry to Tina but Mal does Not like her). Honestly, I think she challenges Nate in ways he appreciates (and he feels kinda special about how much she likes him, she’s the neighborhood feral that hisses at everyone except him 😭).

So I decided to replay Rhythm Thief so I can confidently write fanfiction when the school year starts. Anyways, some thoughts and observations

Vergier has been focusing on the Phantom R case since his wife died, and we know from Finding Fondue that Raphael has only been doing this for 2 years. So Emma's death is still a pretty recent.

It would've been interesting if Raphael had some sort of reaction when overhearing that Vergier has a kid he's been neglecting, but oh well.

Admittedly, I wish there was character flavor text, as it would flesh everyone out a little more, but I can understand why they didn't do that.

I also have thoughts on the special emblem, but I'll make that its own post.

Honestly crazy to reblog my "as a survivor of abuse & torture, here's some stuff I see in Ast*rion's story" with an unhinged analysis of him asking you not to pout at him and like... idk, talking about him being self centered & refusing to feel guilt etc.

Like girly pop, I was talking about trauma representation and the nuances of surviving abuse & torture. This was not an opportunity to make your hypothetical OC infallible & his savior via your love or whatever. I hate to tell you this but people experience abuse/torture irl and they're allowed to not like things you do/say at them. Setting a boundary or fucking hating someone witnessing another layer of that experience or not having the patience for someone to be like, "wow, you made bad decisions when you had no agency, you suck" is not a thing they need to necessarily heal from.

Not to mention that implying he's heartless when he handles being attacked at camp by his "siblings" in a way you don't like, implying he feels no guilt or is incapable of it completely erases how often he is near tears & about to pass out every time he has to tell you, what happened to me was actually worse, I had to do things and I am actually worse. Like do you need things blatantly spelled out for you? Good God.

I hope he dumps you in game and you learn to journal or something. Jfc. God forbid you have to sit with the nuance of the story & the added perspective of irl survivors of horrific shit. By all means, make this about YOU wanting to WOOB.
