Digimon Unity

During a class trip to a tech company six students stumble onto a hidden lab where they find six digivices and accidentally open a portal into the digital world. As they arrive in the digital world the six are scattered across the world and each find a trio of digimon who agree to help them find the capitol to find their way home. Along the way they discover the digivices allow them to unite with the digimon to defend themselves from the dangers of the world. When the six reunite they are told a legend of the Digidestined, a group of children who once saved the digital world, they also learn the tragic fate of the seventh digidestined. Upon arriving in the capitol they begin to discover a conspiracy that crosses the world leading to a betrayal upon their arrival home. With the help of a new ally they must act to save both worlds. Plot

Years ago two young men accidentally stumbled into a world parallel to Earth, a world made of data and code. They found that this world was inhabited by beings calling themselves Digimon. One of the men embraced the digimon as friends while the other began to plan on how to exploit them. Over the following decades the men began a cyber-tech research and development company in the hopes of finding a way to make the worlds closer together. Eventually they created devices known as the Unity Digivices they could use to bond and merge with digimon. However when one of the men tested the process it nearly ended in tragedy. As he recovered the other man took the chance to initiate a hostile takeover of the company. Years later a high school class is visiting Cyber Zenith, a cybernetics company, on a field trip to learn about the latest in cutting edge technology. However six of the students, Theodore Crossman, Felicity Harte, Grant Nichols, Melissa Meadows, Riley Collins, and Drake Walden get lost and get on an elevator. Unknown to them the man who left the elevator before them put in a code to take them to a secret area known as Unit-D.

It is here that they find six experimental devices, the newest model of Unity Digivice. Picking them up they accidentally activate them opening a portal to the Digital World. When they get their bearings the teens realize they have been separated and soon they each encounter the inhabitants of the world, the Digimon.

One teen finds himself aided by a three digimon delivery company, another finds herself in the company of a trio of wannabe magicians, the third finds himself with a group of dark dwellers, the fourth finds herself with a trio of fighters, the fifth finds herself with a group of robotic cartographers and the last finds himself with a trio of dragons.

None of the digimon know how to get the teens back to the real world due to the natural gates being unreliable. A traveling Veedramon tells them that they can find the answers in Cyber City, the capital city of the Digital World. And so each of the teens begins their journey to the capital.

On their way the teens discover that in times of danger they can Unity Digivolve and merge with one of their digimon companions to become a digimon themselves to fight off the growing threats in the Digiworld.

Soon after the teens discover this they are given a warning by a Leomon who informs them that according to Digiworld legend any digimon who consumes a human gains the ability to manifest fully into the real world. As such many digimon will be after the teens to gain this power. Leomon also helps the teens learn to master their merged forms and truly fight like digimon.

In addition to this threat the teens each encounter a group known as the Gladiators who claim to have been tasked with eliminating all the weak digimon from the digital world.

After a while the teen all find each other and catch up on what each had learned about the world and their enemies. Soon after they reach RyCy Nursery where the digimon are shocked to learn from the Jijimon and Babamon running it that Digieggs have stopped showing up. At this point they meet the Veedramon again who dubs the group the Digidestined after an ancient Digiworld myth.

Along the way to Cyber City they meet many interesting digimon such as a cult that worships a floppy disk, a city where digimon dress and act like people and a group seeking out legendary artifacts.

Before reaching Cyber City the Digidestined meet up with Leomon again. The warrior brings them to a temple dedicated to the myth of the Digidestined and instructs them to place their Digivices within podiums in front of murals of ancient symbols. After a bright light they see that the case of their digivices have been marked with the symbols, each representing a trait. Mind for Theo, Dreams for Felicity, Heart for Grant, Endurance for Melissa, Joy for Riley and Creativity for Drake.

After this Leomon joins with them and they finally reach Cyber City but all is not well. Leomon learns from an Owlmon that the king, Victormon is acting suspicious and the warrior joins her in investigating.

Victormon meets with the Digidestined and explains that the royal gate has to be in sync with the gate on Earth in order to send them home. Fortunately this will happen soon so he allows them to stay in the city and enjoy the sights. During this time the Gladiators begin to attack causing the Digidestined to engage them in combat. During these battles the digimon gain access to their natural champion forms before the Digidestined reach their ultimate forms.

When the time comes to return home however the king betrays the Digidestined and directs the gate to Cyber Zenith’s lab where they are taken captive by security.

At this point the CEO of Cyber Zenith, Travis Wilson tells them the truth of the situation. He explains that he was one of the men who discovered the Digiworld and that when they did he began planning how to use the digimon to his advantage.

He was the one who came up with the idea for Unity Digivolution as a way to give humanity the power of digimon while the other man saw it as a way to strengthen the bond between them. However only the kind man was able to get the process to work and even then it nearly killed him due to a health issue.

So Travis came up with a new plan. Joining forces with Victormon with the promise of ruling the real world they set up the Gladiators to delete large numbers of digimon and redirect the Digieggs to a special server.

After experimenting Travis found a way to rewrite the Core Code of a digimon allowing him to force it to take any possible form. An Agumon for example could be forced to become Greymon, Allomon, Tuskmon or Tyrannomon and any of their variants. The process also removed all personality as well as leaving them devoid of color, nothing but mindless puppets. To make matters worse, due to the alteration of their Core Code if they are deleted they are unable to form a Digiegg meaning they die for real. In a final act of spite he calls these beings Cybermon.

When the Digidestined express shock and disgust he explains that digimon are nothing but zeroes and ones, a pale imitation of life. However he learned through Victormon that the teens are able to Unity Digivolve and he wants to know how so he prepares to experiment on them. Unknown to him one of the teens recorded him on their normal phone.

Fortunately an Ex-Veemon breaks in and rescues the Digidestined, retrieves their digivices and flies away. He lands at a mansion outside the city and brings them inside where he reverts to his rookie form Veemon and splits from his human partner. The man promptly collapses as the Digidestined help him into a bed for his staff of doctors to help. Veemon then returns to his preferred form of Veedramon, revealing himself to have been helping them all along.

Once stabilized the man introduces himself as Ron Jones, the other man who discovered the Digiworld. He fills in the gaps of Travis’s story and confirms the details. Explaining that after he lost the company he did not give up on the Digiworld and continued to monitor it with the help of Veedramon. Learning of Travis’s plans he set to work to thwart him leading to the Digidestined ending up in the Digiworld in the first place for which he begs their forgiveness.

At this point he opens a gateway allowing the partner digimon to enter the real world explaining that the legend of “consuming a human” really meant that they had to have DNA added to their data, which happened during the Unity Digivolution process. Now it is up to the Digidestined to stop Travis’s plans.

Travis does not take this lightly as he has his minions inject their DNA into Cybermon allowing them to enter the real world and be controlled like puppets. He has them create chaos as a way to show off the power he controls and to draw out the Digidestined. During the following battle the world learns of Digimon as well as the identities of the Digidestined.

As the Cybermon fall Travis has Victormon send the Gladiator Bosses to the real world by absorbing Core Code from many digimon. In the following battles the Digidestined reach their mega forms and defeat the Gladiators who oppose them.

Finally they battle Travis who by this point has learned how to Unity Digivolve with Victormon becoming Emperormon and now Zenithmon.

Backed against the wall Zenithmon absorbs the data of the fallen Gladiator Bosses gaining further power. To combat this the Digidestined combine as one to form Hexamon who keeps Zenithmon on the ropes until they play the video of Travis confessing about the Cybermon causing Zenithmon’s combination to fail as the various Gladiators each try to take control or escape in disgust and outrage. The fused warrior is able to defeat the unstable monster ending the threat as Travis is arrested for his crimes.

In the aftermath the Digidestined are named humanity’s ambassadors to the Digital World as Ron begins work to stabilize the gateways and create “digital DNA” allowing digimon to enter the real world.

The Digidestined and their partners of course are able to travel between worlds at will enjoying life in both.

Unity Digivice- Smart phone like devices with multiple functions such as scanning digimon information, maps, and communications.

Unity Digivolution- Unity Digivolution combines the data of a digimon with the DNA of a human being creating a hybrid of both based on the next level of that digimon. Natural versions of the result exist but are more bestial in nature, the rule of thumb is any mask on a Unity Digimon is an animal head on the natural version for example.

The Digital World- The Digiworld is comprised of data taken from the internet made physical. Older objects are more pixelated. The Digiworld spins backwards compared to earth with the sun rising in the west and setting in the east. Days last 20 hours with 10 hours in daylight and 10 hours of night. A year in the Digital World lasts 100 days without months or weeks.

The environment is a mix of nature and tech with trees having wires as vines. Water and other liquids have a paint like texture. Meat grows in the ground and is surprisingly safe for humans to eat.

Digimon “eat” by absorbing data from the environment. When a digimon is deleted the data they’ve absorbed is released back into the world while their Core Code returns to Rycy Nursery in the form of a Digiegg. If a digimon’s Core Code is damaged in any way it could risk their memories of their previous life. When a digimon absorbs enough data they can willingly return to a digiegg to begin again.

Multiple gateway arches dot the Digiworld allowing access to Earth. However they only open when the opening on both sides are perfectly aligned. Even then any digimon who passes through will only be a barely visible ghost like being in the real world. These “Wild Gates” also send the user to a random gate on Earth while the Royal Gate can select their destination manually.

There are two methods to allow a digimon to fully manifest on Earth. The first is to “consume a human” which many digimon take literally when it truly means to add DNA to their data. The second is to absorb a large amount of Core Code.

The Digidestined

Theodore “Theo” Crossman- “Digidestined of Mind”

16 years old- Brown scraggly hair, thick glasses and hazel eyes. Faded red t-shirt with blue jean shorts, white socks and blue sneakers. Dark red backpack. A cautious and skeptical boy, Theo was determined to get to Cyber City as fast as possible. However soon he learned he couldn’t ignore the trouble of those around him and began helping out wherever he could even when it delayed his journey. Theo prefers to plan things out before acting but in time learns to think with his gut as well as his mind. Ends up in a relationship with Felicity. Condormon, Toromon and Sharkmon: The three friends run a delivery business across the entire digital world using a wagon Toromon pulls. Their slogan is “only deletion will prevent us from delivering your package” and they intend to stick to it. Theo sticks a delivery label to his bag and uses it as a loophole to get them to take him to Cyber City without much hassle though before long the three consider the boy to be a friend instead of a package.

For a while he tries to deny his friendship with Theo saying that he’s only with him to “deliver” him to Cyber City but in time he admits he’s fond of the human. As Tribeastmon the four speak at once but their voices echo over each other.

Trinitymon Level: Mega Attribute: Vaccine Type: United Beast Digimon Family: Virus Buster Appearance: An armored winged humanoid digimon with a helmet resembling Tribeastmon’s face with bull horns, condor beak and open shark mouth with a human mouth visible inside it. A gold condor face clasp sits on his chest. Golden gauntlet gloves with the left having a shark design complete with biting jaw and the right having a bull design complete with horns. Boots have a hoof design in the front with a fin on the back and wings on the outside. Wields the Trinity Blade made of MineToromon’s pickax, SawSharkmon’s fin blades and CycloneCondormon’s arrow. 12ft tall. Personality: Calm and calculating. Able to plan ahead of the enemy. The four end up in a black void with red and blue digital code floating around. The digimon charge towards Theo with their natural champion forms briefly appearing behind them.

The digimon then turn into streams of code and flow into Theo as the boy glows. The image of Tribeastmon forms before breaking apart into code as armor forms along his body with wings growing from his back and the gloves forming next. The helmet is the last to form.

“TRINITYMON!”

From Tribeastmon: Text on the digivice reads out “Mega Unity Digivolution” Tribeastmon is in the void when Theo’s form glows within him and stands up before breaking into red and blue DNA strands and flowing into the Digimon causing it to glow.

“Tribeastmon Digivolve to...!”

He stands up with his back legs becoming legs and his front legs becoming arms as armor and gloves forms on his body. The tail and fins fade as the wings change in size. The last bit formed is the helmet.

“TRINITYMON!”

As Trinitymon all four speak as one but now in total unison.

Felicity Harte- “Digidestined of Dreams”

16 years old- Long black hair with pink highlights and green eyes. Pink tank top over a short sleeve white shirt. Pink skirt with matching star pattern, black leggings with white socks and pink sneakers. White purse. An optimistic girl obsessed with fantasy and the supernatural, Felicity at first thought she was dreaming until a close call woke her up. She is cheerful and befriends all those she encounters on her way to Cyber City. Much later she learns one of the legendary digidestined wrote her favorite fantasy book series. Her parents are both lawyers with her mother covering criminal cases and her father civil cases. Ends up in a relationship with Theo. Arrives in the digital world by the Lan Lake Digivice: Pink/White Symbol: A thought balloon PyroFaemon, SparkSpritemon and FrostNymphmon: The trio are studying magic trying to become great mages. However after meeting Felicity the trio must decide why they want to become powerful as they join her on her way to Cyber City vowing to keep the girl safe.

PyroFaemon Level: Rookie Attribute: Data Type: Fire Fairy Digimon Family: Nature Spirits Appearance: A fiery fairy digimon. Small with orange flame instead of hair. Purple smoke follows them. Small fiery fairy wings. 3ft tall. Personality: Headstrong and boastful. She’ll rush into a fight to prove herself. Carries a dark navy duffel bag with some sports equipment in it. Grant is the school’s top athlete, a triple threat at soccer, baseball and football. In time however her jokes become a coping mechanism to keep herself from breaking down from the stress of her situation, a situation the other digidestined are aware of and try to help. Arrives in the digital world by the Ping Plains Digivice: Lime Green/Cyan Symbol: A stylized smiley face Dronemon, Meltalmon and Roborgmon: This trio are dedicated to mapping out the digital world and tend to act more robotic than most digimon, however after meeting Riley they begin to open up and develop emotions. This isn’t always a pleasant experience but the three decide it’s worth the pain and dedicate themselves to protecting her as they escort her to Cyber City. Along the way Riley teaches them to truly experience the locations they map instead of coldly documenting them.

A cynical and sarcastic boy, Drake believes in being brutally honest and not holding back judgement towards those who deserve it. He is a talented artist but keeps this to himself out of fear that his veteran father would disapprove, unaware that all his father truly wants for him is to be happy. In time he learns to open up to his partners and the other digidestined. The Legendary Digidestined

The children who created the legend of humans coming to aid the digital world during crisis. Not much is known about them except that they appeared in the digital world in the 80s to help protect it from a monstrous virus. Their digivices resembled pagers. The leader was a boy who who endured numerous trials by fire whose partner was a Coronamon who became Firamon then Flaremon and finally Apollomon. A girl whose heart was as big as the sea had an Otamamon as a partner who became Dolphmon and then Whamon and finally IsleWhamon (KingWhamon). A boy so joyful his laugh could shake the very earth had a Gotsumon partner who turned into Golemon and then Gogamamon and finally Blastmon. A girl whose creativity kept her mind in the clouds whose partner Hyokomon became Buraimon and then Butenmon and finally Eaglemon. A boy whose mind was always in high gear whose partner Junkmon became Tankmon and then Tankdramon and finally Machinedramon. A girl whose dreams grew like trees around her whose partner Mushmon became Woodmon and then Cherrymon and finally ElDoradimon. And last was a boy who sparked like lightning and kept the team united. His partner Pulsemon became Bulkmon and then Boutmon and finally Kazuchimon During the final battle the seventh child and his partner gave their lives go give the others an opening to defeat the virus. After the battle the fates of the other Digidestined are unknown. Some believe they returned home to bury and mourn their fallen friend. Others believe they remained in the Digital World to protect the world he gave his life for. The partner digimon on the other hand were said to have left after the battle. Apollomon is said to rest within a volcano. IsleWhamon is said to have swam beyond any map. Blastmon is said to hide within a deep cavern. Eaglemon is said to fly the skies higher than any cloud. Machinedramon is said to rest deep within an industrial complex. ElDoradimon is said to have become the foundation of a great city.

Allies

Ron Jones- 46- The mind behind the Unity project he hoped it would bring humanity and Digimon together in harmony. However during the first test Unity Digivolution with his partner Veedramon the stress on his body nearly killed him due to an unknown health issue. Afterwards he continued to keep tabs on the Digiworld hoping a day would come when humanity would be ready to learn the truth. Not long ago He discovered Dr Matthew’s plans and set to work to sabotage his schemes including orchestrating the events of the accident that sent the teens to the Digiworld. Through Veedramon he advised the teens and guided them in the right direction when needed. After the Digidestined are betrayed by Victormon and lead into Travis’s trap Ron has no choice but to Unity Digivolve with Veemon into Ex-Veemon to rescue them. As Ex-Veemon he brings them to his mansion where he opens a portal and brings their partners into the real world. At this point he defuses and his condition returns and he nearly collapses before his staff get him medical attention. Once he is stable he explains the truth of the situation and Travis’s true plan. He begs for the teens to forgive him for his role in sending them to the digital world and to his shock they do and agree to help protect both worlds. The Digidestined even dub him their seventh member saying that even though he cannot join in battle he has been helping them this whole time. Not to mention that his goal honors the trait of the fallen Digidestined from the legend. Digivice: Gold/Silver

Veedramon

A kindly traveler Veedramon holds many secrets and hides them beneath a silly persona. When the Digidestined arrive in the Digital World Veedramon guides them both towards Cyber City and towards any areas he knows need help. He also instructs Leomon to teach them how to fight like digimon in order to get the most out of the unity digivolution.

In time his secrets are revealed including his connection to Ron Jones and the fact he has claim to the throne but chose to live among common digimon instead. After the Digidestined return to the real world Victormon makes his move and reveals himself as the villain to the Digital World and in return Veedramon gathers a force of those willing to fight back.

After Zenithmon’s defeat Veedramon takes his rightful place on the throne and begins working towards his dream of a world where humanity and digimon coexist in peace.

When he merges with Ron he becomes Ex-Veemon.

Leomon

An honorable warrior who fights with the ferocity of a beast. Leomon was once one of the Gladiator Bosses but grew disgusted by their mission and stepped down. After this he traveled the digital world advocating that the strong should use their might to protect those weaker than themselves not harass them. His words won over many but also earned him many enemies.

On Veedramon’s orders he sought out the Digidestined and taught them how to fight like digimon. Upon reaching Cyber City he learns from Owlmon how deep the enemy’s reach truly goes and that the king himself is involved.

Upon taking the throne Veedramon names Leomon leader of the Gladiators. Using this chance Leomon renames the group to the Guardians and instructs them to use their strength to protect those weaker to them and help them grow stronger.  

SnowAgumon and FlameGabumon

A pair of digimon who follow Leomon and train under him to get strong enough to defend themselves and others. In time they begin to digivolve allowing them to fight alongside Leomon and the Digidestined.

Eventually the pair learn to DNA Digivolve and form Omegamon Temperat. A mighty warrior of frost and flame.

After the crisis the pair join Leomon’s Guardians.

Cranemon, Ushimon , and Marlinmon

A rival delivery company on friendly terms with Condormon, Toromon and Sharkmon. They loved to compete for deliveries and raced to see who could deliver their packages the fastest.

However things took a tragic turn when the two groups along with Theo found a town under attack by the Gladiators. As Theo unity digivolved with his partners the others digivolved to Hurricranemon, Bulldermon, and Swordfishmon. However even all of them together were no match for the brutes. The three bravely stayed behind to buy Theo and his partners time to get as many civilians to safety.

After their deletion the trio’s Core Code was collected and months later when Travis needed an edge against the Digidestined he combined their code to create a Cybermon version of Tribeastmon.

After a fierce battle the original Tribeastmon reluctantly deleted the imitation permanently deleting their data.

Bardmon

A Koemon variant that carries a lute. After Drake saves his life he accompanies him and sticks by his side even after the group reaches Cyber City. He sings songs telling digital world myth and legend and writes songs about the digidestined. He prefers not to fight but if he must he can digivolve into Targetmon and then Etemon to help.

After Zenithmon’s defeat Veedramon appoints Bardmon as the royal bard.

Wizardmon, Sorcermon, Witchmon and Magemon Teachers of the mystic arts who each specialize in different elements. Wizardmon focuses on flame and earth, Sorcermon focuses on light and ice, Witchmon focuses on wind and water, Magemon focuses on darkness and lightning.

They eventually join Veedramon’s group as Mistymon, Wisemon, Bastemon and Doumon.

Owlmon A wise and kind digimon who loves to learn. As royal librarian she’s noticed that Victormon isn’t the benevolent ruler they seem and give the Digidestined as well as Leomon clues to lead them in the right path. She even discovers the stolen Digieggs. Upon Victormon’s betrayal Owlmon protects the partner digimon and safeguards them until Veedramon can arrange for them to be reunited with their partners. Upon taking the throne Veedramon names Owlmon his royal advisor in recognition of her wisdom. Plesiomon A kind and gentle giant of the sea who helps the cartographers when they need to map the oceans of the digital world. They assist the Digidestined in reaching a remote island to protect the village there from the Gladiators. Petermon and Kazemon

A mischievous trickster who mistakes Riley for his missing friend Tinkermon under a curse and attempts to “save her” however it turns out Tinkermon had digivolved into Kazemon. As the threat of the Gladiators grows more dire the pair open their forest up to any seeking shelter having digivolved into CaptainHookmon and JetSilphymon. After the crisis the pair join Leomon’s Guardians.

Dokugumon/Archnemon

A recluse who reluctantly allows the Digidestined to use her tunnel network to evacuate a group of villages in the Gladiator’s warpath. Inspired by the Digidestined the villagers begin to train and digivolve with many reaching champion or even ultimate. Dokugumon herself digivolves to Arachnemon before returning to lead the villagers in saving Veedramon’s group from a Gladiator ambush. After the crisis she joins Leomon’s Guardians.

HolyAngemon, Angewomon, Darcmon and MagnaAngemon

A group of holy digimon who rescue the Digidestined from a horde of Devidramon. HolyAngemon and Angewomon are peaceful healers while Darcmon and MagnaAngemon are powerful warriors. The two pairs often disagree on methods but all agree that life must be protected. They later join Veedramon’s group having digivoved to Dominimon, LovelyAngemon, Ophanimon and Seraphimon respectively. After the crisis they join Leomon’s Guardians.

Beelzebumon and BeelStarmon

Twin representatives of the Viral Council, a group of high ranking virus digimon who agree that Veedramon’s rule would be best for all digimon and that the threat of the Gladiators must be stopped. The twins were sent as representatives to aid Veedramon’s group to this end. After the crisis they join Leomon’s Guardians to insure that virus type digimon are protected.

The original Digidestined After Travis’s defeat the original Digidestined reach out to the current group and they meet at Ron’s mansion. They reveal their names and what they’ve been up to since their adventures.

Taylor, the original Digidestined of Endurance, became a famous celebrity chef with a series of restaurants world wide.

Mary, the original Digidestined of Heart, became a marine biologist and pushed for stricter laws against polluting in the ocean.

Josh, the original Digidestined of Joy, became a physical therapist and takes great joy in helping people.

Sarah, the original Digidestined of Creativity, became a pilot and actually flew the group to Ron’s mansion.

Issac, the original Digidestined of Mind, wrote a series of fantasy novels called Mystical Adventures about their adventures altering them with a fantasy angle. So the digital world was a kingdom of magic, the partner digimon were elemental familiars and the digivices were pendants of power.

Mindy, the original Digidestined of Dreams, went on to create perfumes and now runs a perfume business nationwide.

Luke, the original Digidestined of Unity, did indeed perish in the final battle. In order to avoid looking insane the others made up a story about running away from home to go on a great adventure and that Luke died saving some of them from a flash flood. This way he was still remembered as a hero.

The group agrees to help the current Digidestined in their mission to unite the worlds and keep peace on both sides. However they make it clear their days in combat are long behind them and instead will help Ron with the background details.

Enemies

Travis Wilson- 45- The head of Cyber Zenith and cause of the chaos in the digital world. His plan was to have the Gladiators delete weak digimon and using a special program to redirect the digieggs to Victormon’s palace where they are transferred to another server where he can reprogram and modify their data making them strong and obedient to him. He plans on selling his Cybermon to the highest bidders and as well as forming a small army. He views Digimon as nothing but pale imitations of life, weapons and tools, nothing more. The digidestined confuse and enrage him. In his mind they have the power he deserves. Digivice: Black/Gray Victormon Champion Black and Blue pallet swap of Magnamon Emperormon Ultimate, skipped over during the digivolution to Zenithmon. Zenithmon Mega Warrior in dark armor with glowing circuitry throughout it. Zenithmon Gladiator Mode Dark Mega Imperfect forced Union with the data of the Gladiators able to use their attacks. Armor is rusted, veins replace circuits, any exposed flesh is pale and diseased looking. Has an aura of code that changes to resemble a Gladiator when he uses their move. As they begin arguing amongst themselves they all appear in the aura.

The Gladiator Bosses

The leaders of the Gladiators who instruct their forces to delete as many “weak” digimon as they can. All but VictoryGreymon believe this is to weed out the weak and use their Core Code to travel to the real world. Unknown to all of them Travis redirects their data to his Digivice upon their deletion to use for Zenithmon Gladiator Mode.

The cruel and sadistic leader of the Gladiators. Victormon’s right hand mon. The only one other than the king to know the full truth of their mission. Deleted by Zenithmon to steal his power.

Obsessed with death and destruction. Deleted by Trinitymon, Chakramon and Twilidramon.

Day 3: Unity/Favorite Dynamic

Joe and Gomamon

This is probably the weirdest answer I'll give since I would've answered Sora and Biyomon before and while I was a child. As of my rewatch of Digimon Adventure back around 2018-2019 with my husband, I honestly like Joe and Gomamon's dynamic.

I saw Joe as a bit of a comedy relief, a low-interest character as a child. Mainly, his story wasn't nearly as flashy or loud as Tai's or Matt's, as those two needed a good punch or argument to resolve their issues (though Joe was rather loud himself at times, but it was never out of selfishness, it was usually genuine fear or surprise, and usually the English dub).

I didn't really see Joe past the jokes and the responsibility that he felt he needed to carry until my rewatch of Digimon Adventure in Japanese. I really felt how serious, earnest, and honest he was in Japanese once the constant jokes were taken away. And it also really made Gomamon shine in how much he wanted Joe to be true to himself instead of living someone else's shoes. The two seemed to be complete opposites… but that's what made them work. They carried what the other needed and leveled each other out. The lax Gomamon needed a more responsible and concerned Joe, while Joe needed to a chill Gomamon to get him unwind a bit.

While my husband relates to Joe the most (of course I had to ask him which Chosen he liked), in a way, I almost wonder if I love this dynamic because this is how my husband and I are. Usually I'm the more serious one and he's the one trying to get me to chill, so I'm Joe and he's my Gomamon.

For an honorable mention… My art-ner and I had a discussion on my Twitch stream for this prompt, whether or not "best dynamic" could have been a human-human dynamic (or digimon-digimon). But I'd also say my favorite human-human relationship in this series is Joe and Mimi. I don't see their relationship as romantic, but rather a sibling-like relationship of a younger sister-older brother, much like Tai and Kari. At the end of Adventure, Mimi needed some space and Joe respectfully chose to stay with her so the group could continue while honoring Mimi's feelings. I love that Joe got to have a 'senpai' moment, to be relied on by Mimi, and I could really feel that Mimi needed a person to lean on.

Regardless, shoutout to Jyou/Joe Kido and Gomamon. May your fish keep swimming marching. XP

Since I don't think I'll get to sit down to draw any more time-consuming pieces over the next two weeks, I thought about taking a look at how "well" my art has been doing this year.

I know, I know, I KNOW. Art shouldn't be measured by how "successful" it is. I shouldn't judge my progress by "the number of likes" or anything along those lines, but... Being an artist on tumblr has really left an impact on my self-esteem, especially because a lot of things, projects, challenges, doodles I've been invested in didn't cause much resonance at all. Which, considering how I'm mostly residing in a low-key fandom, shipping mainly ships that aren't exactly mainstream, makes perfect sense. So yes, one could say that I am a somewhat self-indulgent creator that, yes, mainly creates stuff for herself - and the 2-3 people who really enjoy my niche interests and are silent lurkers/rebloggers or scream into the tags void (you know who you are and I am incredibly thankful for you)!

But still, I couldn't help but wonder which were my most liked/reblogged art pieces of 2024 - including all posts of mine that got at least 100 notes. And it really turns out that there's been a pattern there: First of all, I am truly honoured, because the majority of these depict characters (and even series) I do NOT draw on a regular basis. So the fact that they still got so much attention makes me incredibly happy. Second of all, the majority of these are pieces that took several days, some even weeks to finish. Which, once again, gets me quite giddy, because it means that all the hard work paid off!

Last but not least - it gives an insight on how tumblr's fanbases work and that is just incredibly interesting to me. Characters/ships from "The Amazing Digital Circus" are pretty popular these days, especially because a new episode has been released just recently. When it comes to Digimon, it's not a loud fandom, there isn't exactly a lot of unity, but there certain niches for characters and ships alike that are unbelievably dedicated. Whether you take Takari - and Takeru and Hikari on their own -, Jyou or Yamato... You WILL find followers/enjoyers of those around once you look closely. I'm still relieved that one of my "main blorbos" and my "OTP" still made it into the top 10 - it still validates my personal dedication to keep these dorks alive and around, no matter what happens.

Can you give more context and you opinion to the idea that toei wants to “unify” the digimon brand? (See replies)

I still have a huge backlog of asks to get through (and unfortunately I don't have time to answer all of them at this moment), and I'm sorry about that!...but this one is a bit timing-sensitive, so I'll get it out of the way right now. In short, I think people are taking this way out of proportion; it's a blanket statement about their marketing strategy, and not much more than that.

The reason I say this is timing-sensitive is because they said this at around the same time they're becoming a lot more diligent about acknowledging non-Adventure series for the anime 25th anniversary and even properly integrating Appmon on the Digimon site for once. It's easy to have a strong impression of what the Digimon brand is made up of when you're a fan who's been neck deep in everything since 2002, but for most average people -- from the most mainstream of mainstream casuals to people who like Digimon but are somewhat on the fringe of the franchise rather than knowing everything -- there's kind of a sense of poor awareness of what this franchise is made up of or how they're supposed to be tied together rather than just "they work off the same encyclopedia" or something.

This is something that I'll let others who are bigger fans of the relevant franchises chip in with, but compared to other kids' franchises with a history as varied and extensive as Digimon (Kamen Rider, PreCure, etc.), Digimon has been really bad about presenting itself with cohesiveness. For frame of comparison, if you look at stuff the Kamen Rider franchise regularly puts out, like this anniversary logo they used a few years ago:

Every Kamen Rider series is as unique and individualized as a given Digimon series (perhaps even more?), but on a marketing and branding level, Toei and Bandai are much better at selling each series and work as a part of a greater "Kamen Rider" whole rather than just keeping them as disconnected fragmented parts that just happen to be part of the same franchise.

So most likely, what "brand unity" means is that they're planning on addressing this problem by being more clear in their marketing and categorization and presenting Digimon as a "brand" rather than a bunch of loosely connected individual works, so that if people get into one thing they'll be more inclined to check out the others or will be more conscious of the brand's history. For us who are already hardcore fans, this isn't really that relevant; at most, it means there's a good likelihood they'll be more diligent about acknowledging non-Adventure series and less popular entries, since they'll be allowed to tag along with the core unit, which is most certainly a good thing!

Digimon Adventure 01x09 - Clash! The Freezing Digimon / Subzero Ice Punch

Previously on Digimon Adventure: Devimon proved himself to be a remarkably talented centrist, working between the aisles to bring both parties together for a single goal. What goal? Doesn't matter. What matters is that he achieved unity, and isn't that what's really important here?

With File Island broken up, things seem awfully dire for our kids.

We open on Devimon's home gradually descending from dark clouds onto the top of Infinity Mountain. Surprisingly Greco-Roman in architecture, but this is Digimon World. Dub Tai calls this his "castle" but it lacks the defining qualities of a castle. It's more of a megaron or possibly a temple.

But Taichi has bigger things to worry about right now than a lesson in historical architecture.

Inside, Devimon announces his intentions to the audience: The Chosen Children are still alive, but they're isolated. He'll be able to pick them off while they're stranded out there. Devimon conjures up more Black Gears, sending them off into the scattered fragments of the island.

He's stranded on a frozen shard of what used to be File Island and will shortly die of hypothermia. Dub Tai comically exclaims, "Okay, so Mom was right; I should have worn a sweater!" which doesn't make much sense contextually. They can't all be winners.

By pure coincidence, all of his clothes happen to be on this shard, which he finds immediately. This is a bit of a plot contrivance, but one I'm sure we will all accept without question because it means Taichi doesn't have to spend the rest of this arc in his underwear.

His clothes are frozen solid, but Agumon thaws them out with a couple precision shots of Baby Flame. His shirt comes out great, but Agumon gets overzealous with the shorts and singes them.

Standing in front of another Digimon World anomaly, a long line of post boxes, Taichi takes out his telescope and scouts the surrounding area. While he scouts, he takes a moment to chat with Agumon and reflect on how bad this situation is.

Taichi: (examining Infinity Mountain) We're getting steadily farther from Infinity Mountain. I wonder what happened to Leomon? ...oh, and everyone else. (scans other island fragments) Everyone else is gone; We've all been separated. Agumon: Hey, Taichi? Where do you think we're headed? Taichi: How should I know? Agumon: (nervously) I don't know anything outside of File Island. Taichi: What about the other side of the ocean, that Devimon was talking about? Agumon: I know nothing about it. Taichi: (gazing across the ocean) The world on the other side....

This is the worst it's ever been. The kids are alone and crossing the ocean in every direction as Devimon's planned invasion of the rest of the world gets underway.

Taichi doesn't mention the post boxes. But in the dub, Tai's pretty interested in them.

Tai: What? Mailboxes? Agumon, maybe people really lived here at one time! I wish we could mail ourselves home... (examining Infinity Mountain) ...but it looks like the only way we'll ever leave Freeze Land is to take a real long, cold swim back to Infinity Mountain!And I have a feeling that... (scans other island fragments) ...if the mountain is drifting farther and farther away, then our friends are too! They must all be out there on those other islands! Agumon: Where will we end up if we just keep on drifting around like this, Tai? Tai: Why would I know that? Agumon: Because you're from another world, Tai; I've never left File Island! Tai: But Agumon, I've never left my world either! Agumon: Well, I guess it could be worse. There could be evil Digimon attacking us; It's too quiet here!

Dub Tai never mentions Leomon and is instead more concerned with the fate of his friends. Which. Y'know what? Fair. He met that guy this afternoon. He's known the others for at least five days!

But there's also a tone difference in how they talk about their separation; Taichi describes it passively, while Tai sounds determined and motivated to find them.

The dub also snips all the conversation about the other side of the world. They keep in Agumon's trepidation surrounding leaving File Island but snip out the talk of their destination.

All of this serves to distract from the important context of this dialogue: Tai's worried about his friends but more interested in seeing the other side of the ocean. This is vital context for what will become the plot of this episode.

Suddenly, Dub Agumon's tempting of fate conjures a new menace to the both of them.

Yukidarumon bursts out of the ground, roaring his own name like a Pokemon. Identifying him as an Adult-stage Vaccine-type Digimon, the narrator gives us his rundown.

Narrator: Yukidarumon. A freezing Digimon made up of icy snow. His special attack, Zettai Reido Punch, can freeze anything!

His name is derived from "yukidaruma", the Japanese term for "snowman". Meanwhile, "Zettai Reido" is the Japanese term for Absolute Zero, the theoretical coldest possible temperature. So that's an intimidating attack name.

The dub calls him Frigimon, based off the word "frigid", and has Agumon take over his rundown.

Agumon: Frigimon is a food-friendly snowman. But don't worry, Tai; He's a good Digimon!

What the hell does "food-friendly" mean? Weird. Though I appreciate the dub this time getting in on the "He's a good Digimon OH GOD HE'S ATTACKING" bit this time around.

Yukidarumon hurls a giant snowball at the boys, forcing them to slide down the ledge they were scouting from. As they slide, Agumon exclaims in confusion that Frigimon's a peaceful Digimon; He doesn't know why this is happening! The dub cuts that line because they already took care of that bit in the rundown.

As they slide past Yukidarumon, the problem quickly comes into view.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Yukidarumon turns on them, throwing his Zettai Reido Punch. The dub calls it Subzero Ice Punch, which is slightly underselling the coldness but nonetheless works. The boys dodge, causing his attack to hit one of the post boxes and demonstrating its power.

Let's not get punched by that.

Confidently insisting on taking care of this problem, Agumon lets out a Baby Flame. Yukidarumon blocks it easily.

(I don't know what he expected to happen there. Got a little cocky, Agumon.)

Plan B: The boys run for their lives and try to avoid being punched. Taichi asks Agumon to evolve, but as with last episode, Agumon's still tired and starving. He doesn't have the energy for evolution.

(At least he was able to put out a Baby Flame. The last one he tried petered out.)

Typical of corrupted Digimon, Yukidarumon's dialogue isn't sensible. All he says is his name. "Yukidarumon!" as he attacks. "Yukidarumon!" as he blocks Agumon's Baby Flame. Chanting "Yuki Yuki Yuki" as he chases them.

Yukidarumon corners Taichi and Agumon against a wall. At that point, they have no choice but to fight. Agumon has a plan: He wants Taichi to throw him so that he lands on Yukidarumon's back. Then he can destroy the Black Gear with a point-blank Baby Flame. Problem is, he's too heavy to lift.

Surprisingly, it goes pretty well, as Taichi and Agumon end up sliding between Yukidarumon's legs and avoid another icy fate. Yukidarumon's fist slams into the ice wall that had been behind them, burying himself in an avalanche.

While they have a moment to breathe, Taichi modifies the plan. He instructs Agumon to curl into a ball. Once Yukidarumon emerges from the snow, Taichi declares, "I'll show you the miracle kick of an ace striker!!!" and shoots.

Perfect shot. Agumon flies over Yukidarumon's head and manages to come down on his back. Just as planned, he vaporizes the Black Gear with his Baby Flame and frees the Digimon from its corruption.

With Yukidarumon released, he sits up and reveals his much more polite persona.

Yukidarumon: Huh? Why was I acting so violent? Agumon: Devimon was controlling you with his Black Gear. Yukidarumon: And you got rid of it for me? (bows) Thank you. You're not hurt, are you? Taichi: We're fine. We don't have a scratch on us.

The dialogue in the dub is mostly the same, but... uh... Except for this one thing....

Frigimon: Ugh, what am I doing laying here? What happened? Agumon: A Black Gear was on you and you almost turned us into ice sculptures! Frigimon: Oh, I'm so sorry! I just hate when I do that! But... (bows) Thank you for destroying the Gear. I'm glad you're both alright.

Hey. Uh. Hey, localization team? What the fuck is "I hate when I do that" supposed to mean? XD Apparently, murdering travelers with Subzero Ice Punch by mistake is a regular occurrence for Frigimon. We may need to review his Vaccine-type certification.

Moving along, the good news is that Yukidarumon saw another one of the kids land nearby. A boy with a Gabumon. The bad news is that he landed over there.

Ehh, we can walk, it's no biggie!

That is, in fact, how we get over there. As thanks for saving him from the Black Gear, Yukidarumon offers to use his Zettai Reido Punch to freeze the surface of the ocean as they walk, forming a path they can cross to get to the other island.

Meanwhile, on the other island, Yamato's not doing so well. His island's caught up in a blizzard, but he's exposing himself to the elements in desperation. Freezing cold, weak, and coughing, Yamato has only one thing on his mind.

He keeps going until his legs give out and he tumbles into the snow. Gabumon pleads with him to find shelter and points out a nearby cave. Yamato springs to his feet and races to it, screaming Takeru's name as he enters with hope in his heart. But the cave is empty.

Gabumon makes a small campfire using some kindling and his Petit Fire, and urges Yamato to stay here and get warm. He's already starting to come down with a cold. But Yamato insists that he's fine and wants to go back out to look for Takeru.

As a compromise, Gabumon volunteers to go look for Takeru in his place, explaining that his fur coat can insulate him from the cold. Yamato relents and stays behind, staring silently into the flames. But after several seconds, his anxiety gets the better of him; Shrieking Takeru's name, he abandons the fire and goes back outside.

The dub adds a bit of internal monologue to break up the long span of silence.

Matt (V.O.): Poor little T.K. It's just not right! He's my little brother. I should be the one out there looking for him!

Meanwhile, we check back in with Taichi, Agumon, and Yukidarumon. It's still a long way to Yamato's island, and the boys are getting tired. Taichi and Agumon want to stop for a break, but Yukidarumon points out how counterproductive that would be: The island's moving, so it will get farther and farther away the longer they linger.

Taichi laments that Agumon can't fly, with Tai in the dub directly comparing him to Birdramon. Agumon takes offense to that, forcing him to backpedal in the original.

Taichi: It's just a joke! Don't succumb to an inferiority complex. Agumon: I don't have an inferiority complex!

While in the dub, he tries to puff up Agumon to make him feel better.

Tai: Birdramon probably can't fly in the cold anyway. No one toasts my clothes like you! Come on, laugh! Agumon: No way!

They both try and fail, but American Tai makes the better attempt. Nobody has ever been made to feel better by being told they're having a complex or episode or what have you.

Yukidarumon has a solution for this whole thing. Picking up Taichi and Agumon, he rests them on his shoulders and gives them a ride for the rest of the ice march.

(Uh, be careful with that, American guys; Sometimes Frigimon murders people by accident.)

Yukidarumon walks in silence, but Frigimon has an anecdote for the boys. "Did I ever tell you about the party I went to that the Numemon crashed?" he starts as we shift focus back to Gabumon.

Back on Yamato's island, Gabumon laments his inability to find Takeru. But as he heads back to the cave, he comes upon exactly what he didn't want to find out here. Yamato unconscious and half-buried in the snow.

Gabumon brings Yamato back inside the cave and sets him up on a bed of leaves, but it's not enough. Though he's reluctant, Gabumon recognizes that extreme circumstances call for extreme measures and takes off his fur pelt, giving it to Yamato to keep him warm before curling up with him to share body heat.

Then Gabumon lays down to rest beside Yamato and we zoom out, lingering for a moment on a shadowy Digimon watching the cave from outside.

By the time Taichi's group finally arrives on Yamato's island, the sun's already come up. The boys seem to have gotten some cold but otherwise fairly restful sleep, riding on Yukidarumon's shoulders.

(Dawn of the Sixth Day)

In the dub, Frigimon is still telling the Numemon story.

Frigimon: This one Numemon kept following my sister but I handled it. A little Subzero Ice Punch show and tell! Hey, you two, wake up! We're here!

I'm not sure how much sleeping they got to do given that he's apparently been telling this story all night. He does tell them to wake up, but the shot of the boys yawning and stretching is reframed to them shouting "HOORAY!"

Yukidarumon directs them to the forest in the center of the island, which is where he thinks he saw Yamato and Gabumon land. It doesn't take them long to find Yamato's discarded bed.

Taichi and Agumon set to work, calling out for Yamato and Gabumon.

Meanwhile, back in the cave, Yamato finally wakes up. As soon as he stirs, Gabumon takes his fur coat back and flees around a corner, putting it back on as quick as he can. Recognizing what Gabumon did for him and that Gabumon caught his cold doing it, Yamato expresses his sincere gratitude.

He's so grateful that the art bugs out and accidentally gives him a thousand-yard-stare during his bow.

Those were not the correct eyes for this moment. XD That expression is not, "Thank you for saving my life." That expression is "Yamato has seen what must not be seen and he will never be the same again."

Clearly, Gabumon was not fast enough in retrieving his fur coat.

Suddenly, they hear Taichi calling their names and race out into the daylight.

Taichi explains that he found Yamato thanks to guidance from Yukidarumon. Yamato asks if Yukidarumon saw anyone else, but he insists that Taichi and Yamato were the only ones who fell on these islands. He speculates that their friends would have landed on other islands.

Gabumon sneezes, revealing his cold to the new arrivals. This gives Yukidarumon an idea, and he stomps off without explaining himself.

It takes these boys no time at all to start bickering again.

Gabumon: (sneezes) Taichi: (playfully) Oh, so even Digimon can catch colds! Yamato: (grabs Taichi by the arm) Stop making fun of him! Gabumon was-- Taichi: Oh come on, I was joking! Why are you getting all worked up!?

This harkens back to Taichi threatening to steal Gabumon's fur way back in the Seadramon episode. Taichi's a jerk to Gabumon sometimes.

Though the dub takes his side over Yamato's.

Gabumon: (sneezes) Tai: How'd you get sick? You're the one with the fur around here! Matt: Stop making fun of him! Leave him alone, Tai! Tai: Hey, why don't you chill out, Matt!? I was only trying to see how we could help him!

Instead of Tai acknowledging that he's being a dick here, the scene is painted to make Matt look like the unreasonable one. Tai's trying to check up on Gabumon's condition and Matt flies off the handle for no reason.

Agumon takes Gabumon into the cave to rest while Taichi and Yamato discuss next steps.

Taichi: Now then, what should we do? Yamato: Isn't it obvious? We're going to look for the others. Taichi: Okay but how are we going to look for them? I'm sure everyone's separated and they're all on different islands now. How can we look if we can't fly? Yamato: I'll swim if I have to! Taichi: You idiot, this place is like the North Pole. We'll die of heart failure within a minute. Yamato: Then I'll build a raft from the trees, okay!? Taichi: Yamato, calm down. Everyone is fine! I'm sure everybody's getting along fine even though we're separated. More importantly, aren't you concerned with where this island is heading? Yamato: "More importantly"? Taichi: I think it's heading to the other side of the world, just like Devimon said. Yamato: What do you mean, "more importantly"!?!? (shoves Taichi) Is there anything more important than looking for the others!? What's all this talk about "the other side of the world"!? You can go there yourself; I'm going to save Takeru! And the others!

Taichi's curiosity about the other side of the world crops up here again, in the worst possible way. He slips up, revealing priorities that Yamato violently disagrees with. No sooner are they reunited than the boys are fractured once more, as Yamato bails on Taichi to go figure out a plan for himself.

The dub translates all of this almost completely faithfully, with only one significant difference: The part about Yamato wanting to swim and Taichi pointing out they'll freeze to death is removed and replaced with a different option.

Matt: So I guess we'll ask Frigimon for help. Tai: Weren't you listening to me!? He said they're scattered all over the place. He only has two arms; He's not an octopus!

The delivery here's a bit off. Matt's line is delivered in a sarcastic tone, with a jealous sneer as he says Frigimon's name. He says this like he's being passive-aggressive about Tai's new bestie. But from the context of the conversation, he's clearly supposed to be proposing this idea sincerely; Yamato/Matt's desperately grasping at straws to find any possible way to reach the other islands.

Additionally, when Tai blows off the wellbeing of the others with his whole "Ehh they're probably fine it's fine" bit, his dialogue is written to be more sympathetic.

Tai: Matt, calm down! Wow, what's eating you, dude? I'm on your side; I'll help you get off this island if we have to build surfboards, okay? Look, the others will be fine without us for now; We gotta focus on the real deal.

The core sentiment, that Taichi is more interested in riding this island to its destination than in going to look for the others, still gets expressed. But his flippant dismissal of them is replaced by an expression of concern and solidarity for Matt.

This tonal difference in their argument continues into the next scene.

Putting those soccer legs to work, Taichi runs Yamato down and tackles him into the snow.

Taichi: If we go to the other side of the world, we might find a way to see the others again! I understand how you're feeling but-- Yamato: Like hell you understand how I'm feeling! (punches Tai in the face, knocking him off) Your insensitivity is pissing me off! Taichi: What did you say!?

Tensions explode from there as the boys' argument devolves into a full-blown bare-knuckle brawl. The dub censors out multiple shots of Taichi and Yamato punching each other in the face.

Dialogue-wise, the dub version is basically the same, but Tai gets to talk more which weakens Matt's side of the argument.

Tai: Nobody runs away when I'm still talking; Now listen! Maybe there's something across the ocean to help us find the others! Why do you have to get so bent out of shape!? I know how you feel, Matt. Matt: (punches Tai in the face, knocking him off) You haven't got a clue how I feel, Tai; You're acting like such a jerk! Tai: Who are you calling a jerk, jerk!?

It's a bit more unfocused, again pulling the attention away from Tai's insensitivity, as Yamato put it, to instead focus on Tai and Matt here in the moment.

Watching their fight in the original Japanese, Taichi comes across like a complete asshole in this argument. Yamato may be a little too gung-ho about finding everyone; He almost died last night because of it. But it's super easy to take his side over Taichi, who's ready to abandon the rest of the group to their fates in order to satisfy his curiosity.

But in the English version, it's Matt who comes off like a total dick. Tai's the one who now seems like he's grasping for ideas to solve this problem, with "the other side of the world" being more sincerely expressed as an idea to save their friends. Meanwhile, Matt comes across like he's just freaking out, too overcome by his anxieties to think straight for five minutes and see Tai's point of view.

Either way, it all comes to a head when their fight nearly takes them off a cliff, and Yamato opens up.

Once Taichi sees this, he understands and relents. The fights ends on a softer note, as Yamato expresses his feelings about Takeru. Feelings that are slightly different between versions.

Yamato: Takeru... he can't do anything on his own!

Again, this harkens back to the Seadramon episode. Remember that moment with the cooked fish, when Yamato wanted to de-bone it for Takeru but then Taichi taught him how to eat it instead? This is part of Yamato and Takeru's arc through the series.

In the dub, we get:

Matt: It's T.K. He's out there on some strange island and he's all alone!

We get Matt's concern for T.K., the love and terror that's driving this moment, but we don't get the signaling to Yamato's chief character flaw with regard to his relationship with Takeru. It's a purely sympathetic moment, missing that little nugget of poison buried in the original.

And then the ledge gives out and they go off the cliff anyway.

Taichi catches Yamato and hangs on to a branch, swearing to hang on.

Taichi: I won't let go, even if we both end up dying!

That's a little dark for the dub, so they go with:

Tai: Whatever you do, just don't let go of my hand!

Notably, Matt can't let go; Tai's holding him by the back of his wrist. Yamato has no control over this situation.

Agumon and Gabumon climb down to try and help, but there's little they can do. They're both still hungry. Fortunately, backup arrives to make things much worse.

Oh good, it's that guy that was watching the cave earlier. He's an Adult-stage Vaccine-type Digimon. The narrator gives us his rundown.

Narrator: Mojamon. He's an elusive rare animal Digimon said to live deep in the snowy mountains. Normally, he has a quiet personality and does not pick fights.

For the diegetic rundown, Agumon skips the part about Mojamon's elusive nature and goes straight to the Good Digimon gag.

Agumon: Mojamon is a peaceful mountain Digimon that doesn't like fighting! Gabumon: You'd better tell him that! He doesn't look very peaceful right now!

Seizing a perfect opportunity to kill the children, Mojamon strikes with his Icicle Rod, destroying the ledge and sending them all tumbling to their intended deaths.

The dub calls this Ice Cloud, presumably to pull attention away from the gigantic icicle spear he uses for it.

By purest of luck, the kids land directly on top of Yukidarumon, breaking their fall on his big floofy snow body. He's on his way back from foraging for food as well as herbs for Gabumon's cold.

In the dub, Frigimon quips, "It's raining kids and Digimon again; I'm going to have to start carrying an umbrella." XD That's a good one.

(If he had a nickel for every time children plunged from the sky these last couple days, he'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.)

Gabumon eats the herbs while Agumon finally satisfies his hunger. But the fight isn't over yet; Mojamon descends the cliff to finish the job. While the kids run for cover, Yukidarumon steps up to fight Mojamon.

He tries his best, and briefly knocks Mojamon back into the cliffside hard enough to expose the Black Gears moving the island.

But Mojamon quickly overpowers him nonetheless, slamming him into the ground in front of the kids with a shoulder throw. Mojamon then reveals his other signature move, Hone Hone Boomerang; "Hone" being the Japanese word for "Bone", as previously seen in Ogremon's Hone Konbou. It's a curved bone that he throws in a curved arc, returning to his hand.

The dub calls it "Boomerang Bone", which flows better in English than Bone Bone Boomerang.

The kids and Yukidarumon narrowly avoid the boomerang, and then it's Agumon and Gabumon's turns. Finally getting their strength back up, they evolve to Greymon and Garurumon, the latter of whom shows Mojamon exactly what he thinks of Hone Hone Boomerang.

With Mojamon disarmed, Greymon lets off a Mega Flame. But Mojamon's too nimble to hit; He dodges the blast and kicks Greymon in the face, knocking him to the ground.

Creeping up behind Mojamon, Yukidarumon has a solution for this problem.

The full nelson. If it's good enough for Raditz, it's good enough for Mojamon. Yukidarumon holds him in place while Greymon lets off another Mega Flame, nailing the Black Gear and sending them both hurtling back into the wall. The impact exposes even more of the Black Gears responsible for the island shard's motion.

Garurumon lets off a Fox Fire to take care of those too.

No longer corrupted by the Black Gear, Mojamon shrinks down to about half his previous size. The Digimon explain the situation to him, while Taichi and Yamato revisit their argument.

Yamato still wants to go out and find Takeru, but before they can talk about it, the damaged Black Gears suddenly throw into reverse. Their island piece begins moving back towards Infinity Mountain, returning them to Devimon.

Recognizing that they have bigger problems right now then their previous difference of opinion, Taichi and Yamato agree to focus on this. Taichi offers Yamato some reassurance of his main concern.

Taichi: I'm sure Takeru is doing his best. Yamato: Yeah. He is my little brother after all.

While in the dub, the boys ignore T.K. and instead just agree that they're very cool.

Tai: Hahaha! No stinkin' Gears are gonna stop us! Matt: Yeah! Together, we're gonna be allllright!

Glad to see you boys are gung-ho about this.

Then we close on the boys waiting at the shore with their Partners, as well as Yukidarumon and Mojamon. Waiting in silence for their island shard to return to Infinity Mountain, and for the battle ahead.

As it often does, the dub fills this space with dialogue.

Matt (V.O.): And now I know my little brother will be alright because he has Patamon to take care of him when I can't be there. And I think, as long as we can all trust each other, together it's a sure bet that we'll be able to fight and beat Devimon!

...he says "I know T.K. will be fine because he has Patamon" like that's a valuable lesson he learned over the course of this episode? But. Like. The only place he could possibly have learned that was when Gabumon took care of him, and that was before the big fight with Tai.

Probably should have just stuck with "He'll be fine because he's my brother," which isn't so much a lesson learned as it is Yamato trying to reassure himself because he has no other options.

Assessment: Yeah, like the Meramon episode, this is another one that the dub butchers. They screw up the core argument between Tai and Matt which serves as the episode's emotional core. Taichi wants to see what lies beyond the ocean and Yamato wants to go save their friends.

Taichi's kind of a dick in this one, but that's okay. He's a flawed character. They're all flawed characters. Taichi's defining characteristic is his courage; He takes bold action and assumes everything will work out for the best. In this bitter fight with Yamato, we see the dark side of those assumptions.

But we also see the dark side of Yamato's overprotectiveness towards Takeru and to an extent the rest of the group. The way he nearly kills himself because he can't bring himself to just be still even when he's dying of hypothermia. Not if Takeru's in danger. Yamato is the kind of person that those airplane "Put your own mask on and then help your child with theirs" notifications are for.

We get that in this episode for Matt. We see plenty of Matt's rough edges on display here. But the dub of this episode sands off a lot of Tai's, resulting in an asymmetrical conflict that leaves Matt looking bad - sympathetically so, but still the sole aggressor - and Tai looking good.

The development of my au Marx

I watched some character analysis type videos and felt the urge to do a deep dive on my au Marx's development and stuff. Many many words under cut.

My previous major hyperfixations were the protagonists and worlds of two of my favorite ps2 games Spyro, and Scaler. (There was also Pokemon and Digimon but I didn't have a central character I latched onto with these.) More with Scaler than Spyro, I tinkered with the character some to make what I guess would be an au but I didn't know that was a thing yet.

It was the summer before I think either my second or third year of high school; I'd be around 15 or 16, when my siblings discovered there was a Kirby anime and decided to watch it. Then I obtained a hyperfixation on Kirby. (Even before this, I enjoyed Kirby games.) Rather quickly, this shifted over to Marx. Originally he was round like a regular Kirby character; then over time made changes: removed shoes because I dislike wearing shoes, gave him claws on feet and then arms with claws (unaware of manga Marx.), made the bow tie just for special occasions, randomly thought to myself what if I made Kirby characters not round; resulting in an anxiety attack and then major redesigns. Marx's not round redesign was in development hell for a long while, maybe even more than a year; it was a miserable time as I took my major perfectionism plunge into realistic anatomy and physiology. His body was gradually stretched out and head shrunk until I have my current design which I really like so it was worth it in the end.

Not sure why I decided that he used to be one of Kirby's species altered by Nightmare's underlings. It did add some tasty angst as I was an edgy ish teen getting into grimdark. And my decision to make him a regenerative immortal was partly based on 'how the heck could he have possibly survived Nova otherwise' and I guess partly something to do my interest in whump starting as a strangely(?) young age. He can go on all these dumb reckless adventures and reap the consequences of his actions, sometimes involving military involvement. There's also this conflict between his nature; influences, and wanting to belong; not be shunned and feared as a monster.

I'm with the group that believes that Marx had his powers before Nova. (Nova just temporarily increased his power level.) The game called his winged form his 'true form' like this was something he already had. Also how else could he have gotten to space?

I later added Magolor so he could have a permanent found family. He was more of a more serious foil until I started being on Tumblr and got influenced by others Magolors and realized how his character actually was. (How did I miss that??) Decided to have Magolor be immortal too, if he tends to join Marx on his misadventures sometimes he'd need it. Later realized this immortality kinda fits in with canon lore more than I thought, as Magolor and Marx seem to be the only antagonists who seemed to meet their ends in their original games yet come back later (there's also dark meta knight but he's not the hyperfixation).

I enjoy daydreaming with my Marx. Putting him in situations. When I watch shows I like I imagine him in there. So he gained the ability to travel to other universes. He just travels and goes on adventures. He wants to use his powers for good. To be liked. To belong somewhere. He doesn't really seem to have an end goal. Its just off to the next adventure. He's kind of purpose less, but I guess that's the point. He's searching for a purpose. He has no idea who or what he is. Magolor has a purpose. He's charting stars on the Lor; searching for his home world and to save his family and right wrongs. Maybe become a benevolent ruler to guide his species out of conflict and into peace and unity. Make sure no one else has to go through what he did when he still lived there.

My Marx is also a power fantasy thing to me. Not just the super powers. Parts of him feel like over corrections for my mental/sensory issues. I have a limited list of things I can eat, partly due to my sensitive stomach causing me pain from things, some processed stuff especially processed sugary baked goods (even just a small piece with some things) that the majority of people have no problem with. If I eat a non organic banana I feel Off. (My mom actually agrees she does too????) I can't eat oranges due to the pesticide nonsense or whatever they put on it - makes stomach hurt. (Glad to have a garden so I can at least have vegetables and strawberries some.) City water makes my stomach hurt. Lactose intolerant (why does dairy make my ears and throat itchy too????). I have contamination ocd and any thought about bugs/etc potentially being in my food makes me nauseous. My Marx can eat whatever the heck he wants, including things in the garbage and plenty of bugs. Blood and guts and old carrion? Absolutely! Drinks puddle water and is fine! No stomach aches from the biggest bunch of sugary processed mess! More sugar actually makes him more powerful! Nothing is safe! He can be filthy and sleep on the ground - he doesn't care! You adventure all the time you need to get used to a low standard of living, after all. Often what he considers a bath is just playing in a lake or river for a while. I have hyper empathy, making me distressed about fictional animals (mostly birds), and broken things, and fictional broken things, and objects in general sometimes. Marx can be all destruction and violence and hunting things in the woods to eat.

Although we share having anxiety and depression.

I like to try to enjoy my dreams, and I often end up playing as my Marx as soon as I realize I'm dreaming. Its fun to fly fast.

I've kinda gotten interested in the pokemon gun slavery game since I learned it was actually a base building survival type deal but $30 seems like a lot to pay to watch someone piss on an established franchise. I'd bite for 15, maybe even 20 for a completed game, but I just feel like I'm getting hustled for the current price. It's funny watching nintendo take knee to the balls after decades of stagnant slop but I won't be overcharged for event, sorry. It's a project made out of spite and designed to fire a few shots in the air to scare a company but it isn't really anything else. I think I'll just wait for like a year and catch it on a sale.

Otherwise I would like to see more contenders in the creature collection ring. I can't go back and play old pokemon games because the level of difficulty is nonexistent I've realized as time has gone on that the combat system is really fucking basic and broken. Give me an actual attempt at making an even semi-original competitor with a decently balanced combat system and some challenge and I'd happily throw money at it, full price even.

I've said for years that the hard part about standing against pokemon isn't about making something better than the original IP, it's about putting in a consistent level of effort and continuing to do so while trying to make a fun video game. Literally just do anything besides rushing out half-baked entries designed to siphon money from recognition and nostalgia. Literally any effort at all it seems.

Palworld, when viewed on it's own, looks like a modded unity game with someone's OCs added in and it still makes the official pokemon releases of the last 5 years look like absolute shit out of a butt. Scarlet and Violet in particular look like cheap copies in comparison and it really sells it to me that pokemon kind of needs to die. When the big name IP is so absolutely dunked on by an early access indie project it shows that the only real staying power it has is monopoly.

Pokemon exists as it does today only really because adults with money get addicted to nostalgia and Nintendo is an extremely litigious company. How many pokemon fan games have met their axe? How many developers have avoided even trying to make a similar game because featuring things even tangentially like a pokemon is just begging for a cease and desist from the hip? There should be multiple fan projects that consist of all regions and pokemon wrapped up together in one package but there aren't because the plumber's heel finds them every time. The greedy giant jealously guards his golden goose.

I don't think I'll even probably buy palworld, in fact I think no one will remember it this time next year, but we do need more games like it. Nintendo won't take this sitting down and if the developers can somehow avoid getting C&D'd into the dirt, I really hope that more people try to make the pokemon game they want, not just eat at the trough and be grateful for anything. If you want good and entertaining pocket monsters you need to say so by being the change you want to see in the world. Realize that collectible creatures aren't exclusive to pokemon and Nintendo's control of that genre only extends so far. They know this and that's why they act so aggressively to keep that the truth.

In fact, if I was a holder of the digimon (or the monster rancher) IP I'd be getting some talks going at least. Players are hungry on a lean diet and they've just gotten a taste of a thicker, more nutritious gruel. How quickly and happily they would run to people serving even cafeteria food? Bring something truly delicious and you could boot the king off his throne.

@atsoraasayoma From a general point of view, I agree with you. Liking the things we like and letting other people enjoy the things they like, from a general perspective, is the right call. Respecting each other's opinions and preferences is the foundation of community.

I have had people in my askbox asking me to not tag/name the ships I talk don't talk "100% positively" about, because it may offend them. Personally, I can generally agree with the sentiment here - because I wouldn't want to see negative things in my ship tag either. On the other hand, I do think that constructive criticism should be allowed in a way that is not vile or condescending towards either ship or shippers. You can say "I don't like a ship, but I get/have to accept when others do".

However: If I am not being constructive, I should probably think my words through. If I am trying to make a post calling for unity in the Digimon fandom, saying that we should all stick together and keep writing and ship the things we ship - I probably shouldn't go and exclude a big chunk of the fandom completely.

Instead of calling for togetherness, this person called for division. And that is exactly why so many parts of today's society - even outside of tumblr and general fandom culture - are falling apart. Because there are people who insist on division. YOU can have a preference towards sexuality - but then don't go write a post calling for action for the WHOLE FANDOM and tell people who are a part of this fandom that they shall not interact due to their preference. That they are not welcome.

It's the context of this post - that was put in the Digimon Adventure tag - that is concerning. I can agree to disagree with a person who simply doesn't like my ships - so if that person had made a post about their ship, asking about its shippers to stick together, that's perfectly fine.

But don't address the whole fandom like that. I will not address the faith aspect in all of this, but in general, I PERSONALLY wish religious viewpoints would call less for division and more for a sense of togetherness. Like you basically did. Because this person did not - they didn't, in your own words, "ignore things they disagreed with".
