Todd is a lot more psychic than I first thought. And yes, I use the term psychic for him and Amanda, I have my reasons and I have a whole theory about it but that’s for another post. But I digress. My point is, that I forgot about this moment.
For those of you who haven’t read my books, I do write Todd as psychic like Amanda, but not to the same extent as her. They both have visions with pararibulitis, but his visions are like Amanda’s when she first got them, choppy and vauge. Only Todd won’t ever be able to get past that point because he was never supposed to be psychic and Amanda was. How he became psychic is a whole other thing that takes place after season two and if you want to learn about that, read my books. (Book 2 isn’t finished but I hope to do that soon)
But this is season one, meaning that the event that made him psychic in my continuation hasn’t happened yet, and I forgot about this. Every time I rewatch the show I pick up on something new and that’s the beauty of DGHDA. And I find it amazing that this is canon and I didn’t think about it when I made Todd psychic.
Because how could he know that? I mean, yeah, the police thing is obvious, and the blowing up thing is just a statement… but how could he possibly know about Lux Dujour? There are so many other reasons why Gordon could be obsessed with him, and being a man of the machine doesn’t change anything to make it more obvious.
And Dirk… at first I thought Dirk’s face was like that because he was worried Todd was going to figure out the loop… but no. His face is like that because he’s realizing that on some level, Todd is like him. He’s realizing that this is why the universe handed him Todd. This is the reason he’s with Todd.
Spoilers for drink gently’ s1 but holy FUCK I finished s1 and Jesus oh my heart my body I’m quaking oh god oh my oh my sweet castor ple my emotions my feelings who made this I’ve been bamboozeled the feels went up then DOWN then OH MY GOD <333
But at the end of it all I love this show hahshahshahsha
God season 1 of this show was so good only for it to end on a cliffhanger, *and* for the next season to be complete dogshit and end on a worse cliffhanger, thinking abt it makes me so sad
HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO DIRK GENTLY: ALL THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE REFERENCES I'VE NOTICED IN DIRK GENTLY'S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY (a.k.a. everything is connected)
(spoilers)
this took a good couple of hours and I tried to do this in order; buckle up!!
SEASON 1:
the posters on the windows as todd is walking by the convenience store place has a silhouette of a falling whale, what I assume is a reference to the infinite improbability drive whale, and an ad that says "zaphod," a reference to zaphod beeblebrox (s1e01 'horizons')
(also todd's stance here is so funny to me)
the rowdy 3, consisting of four (and later five) members, could be a reference to how the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy is called a trilogy that happens to consist of 5 books ("there are four of them!" "I'm wildly aware")
one of the screens in the death maze has the number 42 on it (s1e04 'watkin')
SEASON 2:
there are 42 blackwing subjects
farah's awesome jacket with "D Adams" on it and the number 42 (multiple episodes)
the boretons' dog is named agrajag, which is the entity that arthur dent accidentally kills in every incarnation. unfortunately he dies here too (multiple episodes)
in the tree car, farah remarks that "the odometer's only on 42 miles" (s2e02 'fans of wet circles')
the book francis cardenas has by him as he's having the nightmare that says "PANIC!" on the cover (in what can only be large, unfriendly letters), with the subtitle "attack devil dolphins." (s2e07 'that is not miami')
the executioner guy in wendimoor calling dirk a "hoopy frood" as he helps him unload the scissor blade things (s2e08 'little guy, black hair')
the blackwing phone number on the business card, "555-424-2424" with a wild amount of 42s (s2e09 'trouble is bad')
dirk telling himself "don't panic" before jumping into the portal (s2e09 'trouble is bad')
god i love dirk gently’s holistic detective agency because there’s this one moment in season 1 where dark haired fbi guy says that “divorce is like becoming a whole different person” to light haired fbi guy then the guy he’s talking to gets soul-swapped into another person and the dark haired guy gets killed by the aforementioned soul swappers and the divorce is either with/a result of his relationship with sammie who was in the hotel when the murder happened and she gets killed by the head body swapper guy who she had a relationship with when he was a different person and i may be reaching but wholly shit everything really is connected
"I think of you and me as Module "B" of the detective agency. Todd and I being Module "A", the investigative arm, but you and I, we're the strike team, for when things get physical."
"local lizard betrays his entire species (plus a few others) because this one (1) human taught him empathy. i am 95% sure there was going to be True Love's Kiss in s3 and I'll never be over the fact that tbs renewed the show and then immediately turned around and canceled it."
"the series is lowkey about a cosmic battle of order vs chaos which was gearing up for a showdown in season three but then it got cancelled. Bart is very much on the chaos side, she introduces Ken to the world of the supernatural, and then he becomes the leader of the order side. Beautiful, tragic, beautifully tragic."
me not having watched any popular stuff as a kid led to some pretty funny results in the way i think of actors. elijah wood? that's todd brotzman from bbc america television series dirk gentlys holistic detective agency. martin freeman? he's lester nygaard from fargo season 1. what the fuck is the hobbit, never seen that.
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (season 1) hates cops so much???!!!! There's about 6 cop characters and not a one of them does any damn thing useful or helpful! All they do is wave guns and ask people invasive judgemental questions, Like real cops do! - but in an American/British TV show! From 2016! The world is replete with riches and wonders 🥰
Ok I’m binging the first season of X Files and finished it yesterday …. What paranormal/aliens/ fantasy crossover would you want!
1) Doctor Who! I’m not sure which Doctor but any would be fun!
2) Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency! There’s so many weird kids Dirk could easily have gotten on Fox’s radar! Plus Mulder went to school in England so lol
3) Roswell New Mexico of course lol
4) The Librarians! Ok hear me out, Scully and Mulder both give me the same nerd vibes as these guys I think it’d be fun!!
5) Ok hear me out, hear me out! Leverage crossover where Parker or Hardison or someone need to use the FBI alias and run into our basement dwelling nerds! Please?!
Best use of music in a TV show: First Things First by Neon Trees in the last episode of season 1 of dirk gently's holistic detective agency, at the very end of the episode, "you are never gonna get everything you want in this world, first things first, get what you deserve"
