My message on Discord's new UI

"I have visual snow syndrome, a symptom of visual snow syndrome is that white text on a very dark background can cause afterimages. You know screen burn? Imagine screen burn in your eyes, where whatever you were looking at is stuck there for up to an hour. Light mode is physically painful and dark mode is disabling. Your new changes are an accessibility nightmare and have made the app fully unusable for me. And that's not even mentioning the fact that a lot of the changes you made to the app are absolutely awful, convoluted and just plain stupid for ease of use. I know companies love to pull the "well we know every single tester has hated it, but we spent a lot of money redesigning it so we're doing it anyway!" card. But this isn't the logo, this isn't the blue, this isn't minor changes you'll stop noticing after a while. This is a huge overhaul that is again AN ACCESSIBILITY NIGHTMARE! Cut your losses and listen to your audience because I'm seeing a lot of people posting API alternatives to Discord in other servers and Reddit. People will not be using your app. Do better. Discord mobile is fully unusable to me until you make changes, I physically cannot look at the text anymore. Please fix it and do the smart thing."

I downloaded the last APK file for Discord before the change, but this is genuinely disheartening. Discord is actively refusing to even read genuine complaints, telling people 'Well this is how it is now'. Much like Tumblr.

Please send feedback on the Discord app as well as on the store pages! Please let them know this isn't the same as just changing the icon or the colour of their blue. This is an actual accessibility issue!

I will admit though, the ONE good thing about the change is the new Media feature while searching chats, but it's completely overshadowed by everything else and the lack of pages (only infinite scroll) makes it difficult to find things.

Ok, no, I actually want to talk about how bad the new discord mobile design is as a user.

If I get a DM on discord, then a little notification icon appears at the top of my discord app alerting me of this. To view the DM, I then have to swipe to open the server list, and then look to the bottom of the screen to see that it's a DM. Upon tapping the messages icon, it opens the messages, and where is the new message? Near the top of the fucking screen.

Compare this to the old layout. The notification appears in the top left, and I swipe to open the server list. I can now not only instantly see that I have a DM (or DMs) because my eyes are already looking at the top of the screen, but I can also see exactly who has messaged me because it shows me their icon. And if more than one person has messaged me, I can not only see that too, but I can also choose whose message I want to read first.

In addition, not only is it significantly more inconvenient to view my DMs, it's also more inconvenient to get back to the server list.

It utterly baffles me that discord would change this design. I have to go through more screens now to see my DMs, and I have to move my eyes from the top, to the bottom, then back to the top of the screen to view them. It is just straight up worse design! What were they thinking???

who let discord cook on this new ui i want the old one back this one messes with my muscle memory so bad and it is actively less convenient like

the member list is way out of the way instead of being a simple swipe to the right, now swiping to the right triggers a reply on the message you swiped over instead

search tool is missing several results and no longer lets you go through pages you have to scroll down which makes finding stuff harder especially if it’s not recent

why is the invite members button right below the search that makes me anxious abt accidentally inviting someone to a server that’s supposed to be private or something

okay two good things uhh I like how voice calls look and being able to search for members is handy

but oh my god everything else is so much less convenient and it wasn’t needed

Seeing 50K people rally behind a discord protest (because of a slightly annoying UI change)…but people not protesting platforms using AI (despite it damaging artists), platforms censoring conversations about genocide, or any other potentially world changing digital protest is so upsetting.

Do you all realize how this discord protest is ridiculous in the face of the world’s issues?

In fact, protesting against discord after they made statements in support of trans people is the exact opposite of what we should be doing.

I really hope people reconsider and instead send those overloading data requests on New Years to Instagram or Twitter/X, to protest their active deadly censorship. That’s effective digital organizing.

Hey, you. Are you annoyed at the new Discord update and want to go back to the old UI*?

It's actually really easy to do. First things first, you need to uninstall Discord. Once that's done, locate an APK file of a legacy version of Discord. Anything is fine as long as it's before version 206 (for my testing I used version 204) https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/discord-inc/discord-chat-for-gamers/ here's the website that I used for mine. Make sure that you use a stable version of the application as you will be dealing with less jankyness that way. (if you use an .apkm file you'll need an additional application that can unpackage the compressed version of that like APKMirror)

Once you've installed this legacy version, you're going to have to log into your account and access the beta version of the new, current UI by sending a ✨

Now before you go through the same method to disable it, while it's enabled navigate over to the setting>appearance and scroll down until you see a switch to toggle of the New Layout. Once this is done, it's disabled and it'll stay off. Even into modern versions of the application. I'm on version 208 with the old UI.

*This only works on Android devices, I'm sure that it can also be done on Apple devices, but as I don't own one, I can't help find a way to get it working for you. Sorry

I've been watching the app rating for Discord drop at least .4 in the last day. Believe it or not, we're making a change.

Leave a 1 star review and cite the new UI as the reason. Cancel your Nitro if possible. Maybe we'll actually get these people to listen to their users for once if we threaten their bottom line.

for everyone who's tired of discord, i want to introduce you to the matrix protocol.

its an open source messaging protocol a bit like IRC but much easier for modern internet users to figure out and its brought up to modern standards.

it's like email in that it's a protocol, so it cant be owned by any one company, and you can choose between a variety of hosts and clients while still being able to communicate with people using different combinations of matrix hosts and clients. so if you're signed up with a matrix host that starts doing some fuck shit like discord, you can switch to a different one without having to uproot your whole social circle.

the client that I use and really like a lot is Element. If you're used to discord, that's a great one to start with, because the UI is very discord-inspired. I also use the matrix foundation's own host for my address (so i have a :matrix.org address) but the matrix website has a list of hosts and clients that you can sign up with and use. if you understand how email works, it's really the same idea! and once you have your address and client, using it is very similar to using discord.

matrix even has discord-like server functionality and if you really know what youre doing you can even bridge matrix with discord, IRC, and a few other chat services to send and receive messages with people who arent on matrix!

if youre thinking of moving away from discord, i would highly encourage you to give matrix a try, and encourage others to do the same!

Holy shit. the new discord ui update is a fucking nightmare. it's so inaccessible, where are my settings? where are my dms? where is fucking anything i normally look at? server list? girl where are you?

They added so many convoluted and moving parts and it's genuinely a fucking nightmare, even reduced motion doesn't help it. In fact, the reduced motion setting actually makes it worse, it's clunky and very very fast. it's jarring how bad all of the accessibility settings are.

How is discord going to roll out a shitty ass update and do nothing for their accessibility.

BACK ON TOPIC OF DMS. My neurodivergent ass is already fucking horrible at responding to dms, the fact that they don't show up at the top anymore and show me visually that i have a dm and who it's from is fucking awful. i don't look at pings, dms just being another little red number at the bottom is a fucking nightmare for me.

someone on twitter posted that they're using the firefox app to use the browser version of discord on their phone instead of the new mobile ui and I just tested it out and it works great!!!! just turn on desktop mode, it's slightly different from the old UI but way better than the new one!!!
