Ruba delle crostatine e rischia la pena capitale

La vicenda avrebbe dell'incredibile se la cronaca non fosse stata puntualmente annotata da un famoso e stimato cronista dell'epoca.

La cuoca aveva preparato un vassoio di tortine e il malvivente, con gesto abile e repentino, era riuscito a sottrarlo in un attimo. Il giovane non ebbe però il tempo di far sparire il corpo del reato, prova n. 1 al processo, e fu arrestato in flagrante. La vicenda si svolge in un ambiente altolocato, anzi, regale: querelante la Regina di Cuori, imputato il Fante di Cuori; in aula presiede il Giudice Re di Cuori. Testimoni, ma ben poco informati sui fatti, il Cappellaio Matto, il Leprotto Marzolino, la Cuoca e Alice.

L'Autore descrive la comunicazione ufficiale dell'accusa fatta dal Cancelliere, preannunciata da tre squilli di tromba e letta da un rotolo di pergamena:

On this the White Rabbit blew three blasts on the trumpet, and then unrolled the parchment scroll, and read as follows: The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts, All on a summer day: The Knave of Hearts, he stole those tarts, And took them quite away! (*)

Il processo si avvolge in mille rivoli di quisquilie, condite con giochi verbali che prendono il sopravvento sulle questioni fondamentali di giusto e sbagliato, di innocenza e colpa. Alla fine non è dato sapere se il Fante sia condannato o no, dato il caos che si crea in aula e anche perché, mentre Alice protesta ad alta voce contro le sciocchezze che sta dicendo il Re, la bambina si risveglia dal sogno che stava facendo con la testa appoggiata in grembo alla sorella.

(*) Una mia resa: Di Cuori la Regina fece qualche tortina, d'estate un caldo dì; di Cuori poi il Fante le prese tutte quante e le rubò da lì!

It's funny how a lot children's TV shows based on Alice in Wonderland try to add some sort of moral, since Lewis Carroll wrote the Alice books as an antithesis to the sort of moralizing literature of the Victorian Era. I feel like if you wanted to make a TV show that captures the spirit of the Alice books, you'd basically have to make what amounts to "G-rated Smiling Friends."
