Anime list: ATLA-esque anime (aesthetically speaking)
This is a personal list, but more specifically, these titles I am marking here are stories I feel like are worth the read after finishing avatar the last airbender. I put these in the list mostly due to its East-Asia-esque setting as well as its fantastical elements with it. Most of these are surprisingly underrated, or that not a lot of people talk about these titles I've listed.
Twelve Kingdoms
Moribito
Sword of the Stranger
Dororo
Yona of the Dawn (aka Akatsuki no Yona)
Mushishi
Kemono no Souja Erin
Princess Mononoke
Children of the Wales (?)
Let me know what titles are worth adding to this list.

what’s your phone wallpaper : just aesthetic landscape photos lol.
last song you listened to : Big Town Banky Blaine's Rockabilly BBQ by Bear Ghost
currently reading : Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown. incredible book honestly but it is a tough read. i've never felt such dread and disgust reading a history book before. highly recommend though, it's insanely well researched and organized. last book i finished was Tender is the Flesh by Bazterrica.
last movie : Little Big Man. movie is still funny as hell. book is better but still
last show : aheem heem i don't know... i never watch tv shows sorry. it might be Dororo (2019) though since i think i watched that back in january.
what are you wearing right now: mario pj pants, sonic t shirt, socks
piercings / tattoos? : used to have ear piercings but they closed up years ago.
glasses ? contacts? : i'm a glasses wearer all mi life... my eyes are too blinky for contacts.
last thing you ate? : lemon cake. deliciouse
favorite color(s) : purple, pink, and blue
current obsession : Mother 3, the usual. um reading too. i'm really into reading again

for animes - (just my personal faves idk if theyll jive with you but i liked these + dunmeshi)
girl's last tour - really pretty post post post apocalyptic adventure that talks about nihilism etc. the manga is actually better since the anime stops halfway but its sooooo pretty
kino's journey (original not remake) - strange child and their talking bike have adventures. its weird the art is nice
dororo 2019 - really nice anime about a pretty fucked up cool premise. i really like the protagonist and his whole deal.
ive also heard the dorohedoro anime is good but im manga only on that so. shrug
good luck out there o7
oooh ive only heard about dorohedoro and dororo, the others are new to me! but all those sound pretty interesting, im definitely one to watch a show purely for the aesthetics of it (big reason i wanted to watch devilman crybaby in the first place back when it first dropped) so i appreciate these :33 more for the list!

currently from just a very rough looking up I got this for my list
D.N.Angel »it's the art style that makes me want to try it I didn't look up anything beyond that it is so good ♡ (˘▽˘) love it~
Princess Princess »aesthetic (っ˘ω˘ς )
Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch »music
Inu x Boku Secret Service »monsters living among humans is too hard to resist. living the life and wanting it seen ✌️
no comments on these just think they might be worth trying ლ(╹ε╹ლ

whats dororo?
Oh, man, where do I begin? (I'll try to keep this spoiler-free)
When I refer to Dororo, I usually refer to the 2019 anime adaptation. There was also an animated adaptation released in 1969, and both are based off of a manga published in the late 1960s. The 2019 version is available to watch on prime video, and it's only 24 episodes long, so it's very easy to get through. The first time I watched it, I binged the whole thing over the course of a single night, and if you know me, you know that that's something that I NEVER do. I stayed up until the early hours of the morning to finish this show. If I had to choose just one show to watch for the rest of my life, it would be Dororo (2019).
(WAIT IT'S AVAILABLE ON BLU-RAY NOW???)
(Edit: Somebody also put the whole thing on youtube)
It's hilarious. It's heartbreaking. The aesthetics are incredible, the fight scenes are great, and the quiet moments show their importance. A single episode can make me both laugh and cry. It's also vehemently anti-war, and a large part of this show focuses on ordinary people who are just trying to live despite the conflict around themselves. I also think it introduces just the right amount of fantasy; despite the magical aspects, the world always feels very real.
The only disappointing moment I can think of is the last five minutes or so of the final episode, but I've heard that the ending isn't necessarily canon to the manga, so???
Onto the two main characters:
Dororo
Tumblr media
Most of Dororo's backstory is revealed throughout the series, so I won't go into it here, but essentially, he's a young trans boy that uses thievery to survive. In the first episode, he is saved by Hyakkimaru and confidently slots himself into the role of Hyakkimaru's younger brother.
Hyakkimaru
Tumblr media
Long story short, Hyakkimaru's father made a deal with a bunch of demons wherein the demons could eat his firstborn, and in exchange, his father's land would see prosperous times. One of the demons failed, so though Hyakkimaru was born a husk, he was born alive. After being abandoned, he's found by a prosthetist. His face? A mask. His limbs? Prosthetics. His ears, nose, and eyes? All decorative. He has a fake spine and no senses except for maybe taste. Eventually, he figures out that if he kills demons, he can regain the parts of his body that the demons stole. There's a flipside, but it's a spoiler.
At first glance, this sounds like a story of disability being cured, and there is an aspect of that, but Hyakkimaru's new sensory experiences tend to lead to setbacks and challenges (as he has to learn to experience the world in a whole new way), though again, I don't want to get into any spoilers.
His story is moreso about revenge and justice, and though the show brings up a lot of moral questions, it never passes any moral judgements. I find it absolutely fascinating.
not to mention, Hyakkimaru is a gender envy icon
If you're getting into Dororo for the first time, be prepared for some disturbing imagery in the first few episodes. Iirc it's rated 18+, so some of the themes are VERY mature and the episodes aren't afraid to show some gore. When swept up in the charm of the main characters, found family, and exploration of trauma, it's easy to forget that this is also a war story.
Hope this helps!
