2007 Thanksgiving Remembered
2007 Thanksgiving Remembered: Boulder, Randy, Doug (Photo: Geo Davis) Nine years ago I sat in Rosslyn’s front parlor on Thanksgiving morning and started drafting a blog post. I’m sitting in the front parlor (aka the “green room”), drinking coffee, scratching Griffin behind the ears, and allowing my mind drift to back to that first Thanksgiving we celebrated at Rosslyn. It was actually one day…

Day 195: Saturday July 13, 2024 - "Quiet Nights On Rialto"
The car was rented and the permit in place for me to be spending this Saturday night out on Rialto, but the bags weren't packed and the last thing any of us needed was a stressed out sideways misadventure. And so I did the grown up thing - I pulled it. I stayed home, I rested - a full two hour afternoon nap, thanks to Audrie, I packed slowly, I helped around the house, made dinner, and an evening fire. I made a conscious decision to not pout or poo one bit about the slight change in plays - as badly as I wanted to be mad at work - I knew that was a deflection to my own doing too. Just let it be and ok with it, I told myself immediately on Friday night. And with that positive attitude, I had a productive restful day, and I am ready to go get after it tomorrow.
And in the reflection of this being the painfully right call, an insight came to me about all those nice quiet nights out on Rialto, in self reflection, were about hoping for and striving for exactly this. Those nights led me here. And while I had traded the view of sunset over the pacific and a driftwood fire in, the return on that trade was equally as beautiful. A quiet night at home with my family. And I can imagine, that old aesthetic cowboy, sitting out there in the salts of time, affirming my decision. "Id rather being doing that right now" I am sure I would catch myself thinking. And We'll go, some time soon now, I promise - with him in tow, to see those tidepools and join me at that fire. And I can be thankful for the important places like Rialto, that can take us back into their folds in our memory and remind us what is most valuable....everything I ever wanted then, is sitting right here, with a fire in my own blessed backyard. And the game is to continue to see it, and continue to look for it. Those reminders are there, outside the grind.
Song: Mikey Mike - Cooler
Quote: “The hardest thing in the world is to simplify your life. It’s so easy to make it complex...what is important is to lead an examined life.” Yvon Chounaird
“In response to people saying “you can’t go back,” I say, “Well what happens if you get to the cliff and you take one step forward? Or, do you do a 180° turn and take one step forward?” Which way are you going? Which way is progress? The solution to many of the world’s problems is to turn around and take a step forward. You can’t keep going trying to make a flawed system work.” -Doug Tompkins

A Horse is a Horse, Of Course, Of Course
“I’ll fake it through the day with some help from Johnny Walker Red”-Elliott Smith
Rewatching Netflix’s seminal animated series, Bojack Horseman, I had the music of the late Elliott Smith and the poetry of the late Charles Bukowski (I believe both are name checked in the series) flowing through my head. The show begins as a Hollywoo(d) satire pitched somewhere between Robert Altman’s “The Player” and Doug Ellin’s “Entourage” and ends with the gravity of The Sopranos or Breaking Bad.
Bojack Horseman (Will Arnett) was the star of an artless but charming family sitcom called “Horsin’ Around” in the late 80s up to the late 90s. His “friend” Mr. Peanut Butter (Paul F. Tompkins) anchored a watered down knockoff called “Mr. Peanut Butter’s House.” The series kicks off in 2014 with our heroes in middle age clawing back to the A-List.
The premise makes me wonder why the untimely death of Bob Saget didn’t reignite interest in the show, given that Horseman and Peanut Butter are fairly obvious stand-ins for Bob Saget and his long time friend and collaborator John Stamos.
The premise starts off with a tone akin to Entourage and ends in a tragedy similar to The Sopranos (also wisely name checked in the show, with an appearance by David Chase.) Nearly everyone Bojack has ever loved has died or parted ways on poor terms with him. He faces a life as a pariah, persona non grata in Hollywoo and even serves a prison sentence for his misdeeds.
Bojack is an alcoholic wreck of a horse (or is he more man than a horse?) - cursed with the family disease by his cruel mother Beatrice and detached father, Butterscotch. The generational trauma passed down from the Horseman and Sugarman clans that preceded Bojack is immense. Beatrice and Butterscotch are also intelligent, perceptive, and acerbic. Bojack carries the genealogical gifts they gave him to dizzying heights as an actor and comic. He’s as smart, funny, and talented as he is broken.
Bojack is flanked by his impish, couch crashing pal Todd Chavez, long-suffering manager/agent/house-cat Princess Caroline, and biographer/journalist friend Diane Nguyen. Diane spends much of the series in a fraught marriage to Mr. Peanut Butter. These characters help manage the tone of the show, with Todd often brought in to lighten heavy stories and Diane as a sobering voice of reason to check the behavior of our very un-sober equine hero.
Bojack Horseman does some incredible world building on par with the prime seasons of The Simpsons in its 77 episodes. It would be impossible for me to name check every character or touch on every plot. I can and sort of did tell you how things end but how they would unfold before you watching is incredible.
I finished my rewatch of Bojack Horseman thinking of Bojack’s mother, Beatrice’s grief for her husband Butterscotch “Everything is worse now.” I felt like my time with a friend came to an end; as awful as Bojack is - and he is awful- I saw a lot of myself in him. And I believe his pain helped me manage my own.
Bojack Horseman was shockingly canceled before the end of its intended 8 season Netflix run, wrapping in the twilight of the pre pandemic ‘10s at the dawn of 2020.
The series deftly juggles tones somewhere between a trip to the zoo and a trip to therapy. It is fun and funny and the emotional, painful episodes feel cathartic for their realism in a surreal setting and have a heartfelt sincerity. The apex of the show is “Free Churro” an episode that is almost entirely Bojack eulogizing his mother in an unflinching and bracingly honest way.
The show is not flawless. It has a few episodes I find skippable where it shoehorns in hamfisted politics. It has characters I find insufferable like Yolanda the axolotl and the 30s screwball comedy reporters. But much like Bojack himself you’ll find so much to latch onto and identify with amongst the flaws.
This is one of the best, most important, and most creative animated series of all time - don’t act like you don’t know.

Matt Damon and Tony Hale in The Informant! (Steven Soderbergh, 2009) Cast: Matt Damon, Melanie Lynskey, Scott Bakula, Joel McHale, Thomas F. Wilson, Tom Papa, Rick Overton, Tony Hale. Screenplay: Scott Z. Burns, based on a book by Kurt Eichenwald. Cinematography: Steven Soderbergh. Production design: Doug J. Meerdink. Film editing: Stephen Mirrione. Çomposer: Marvin Hamlisch. Both Erin Brockovich (Steven Soderbergh, 2000) and The Informant! are based on true stories about people who exposed corporate malfeasance. But while the former movie was a solid piece of entertainment showcasing a star turn for Julia Roberts, it was also one that could have been made by any good director. The Informant! is the work of an auteur, a director with a distinct, even idiosyncratic style and a clear point of view, a measure of how Steven Soderbergh has grown in technique and confidence. You can sense that from the gratuitous exclamation point appended to the title and the clunky font, redolent of rock posters from the psychedelic era, that has been imposed on the screen credits. Soderbergh is out to play with our expectations of what a film about a whistleblower cooperating with the FBI should be like. The cast is full of comedians and actors who usually play comedy, such as Joel McHale, Tony Hale, Scott Adsit, Patton Oswalt, Paul F. Tompkins, and both Smothers Brothers -- Tom is a senior executive at Archer Daniels Midland and Dick is a judge -- all of them playing it straight. Their presence creates a kind of tension in the film: We keep expecting them to break out into familiar comic shtick -- for Tony Hale, for example, as Mark Whitacre's continually surprised lawyer to turn into the busybody political factotum he played on Veep -- but they don't. Soderbergh's ironic tone is designed to fit the facts: Mark Whitacre may have been out to expose the crookedness rife at ADM by cooperating with the FBI, but he was a crook himself. We begin to sense that Whitacre may be a little bit off when we start hearing his thoughts in voiceover, meditations on polar bears and butterflies and anything else that crosses his mind, a delicious stream of consciousness that doesn't begin to hint at the complications of the character. Matt Damon gives one of his best performances as the chubby, cheerful, and morally unhinged Whitacre, and Scott Z. Burns, who had previously written a very different character for Damon in The Bourne Ultimatum (Paul Greengrass, 2007), gives him wonderful things to say and do. Under his pseudonym, Peter Andrews, Soderbergh is his own cinematographer for The Informant! and he chooses slightly faded colors and casts a soft haze over many scenes, creating a subtly dated atmosphere for a film set in the early '90s, the era before ubiquitous cell phones and laptops.

Remembering Doug Tompkins
One of the few economic philosophers, Anders Indset, has made it clear with quantum economy that the world will turn even faster in the future. Processes will become faster, decisions can be made more quickly, distances will be shorter. We humans are part of this acceleration because, on the one hand, it is natural and, on the other, because we demand it in the interaction of technologies and resources. The question for the individual is always how to deal with it.
In times of upheaval, we return to certain values and virtues. These naturally give us the stability we need in life. A product, a brand, an idea that has survived for decades or centuries has also survived crises. It is considered as trustworthy as possible. However, we have the greatest trust in ourselves, even if we often don't realize it or can't find inner access to it. You often have to rediscover it. The clear philosophy of a company or a brand expresses what every person longs for.
The recurring question of identity. Doug Tompkins, the founder of The North Face, was able to pinpoint the essence of need fulfillment. When your life comes down to something very essential, when something is at stake, when you need the bare minimum to survive, what do you choose? "Necessity before luxury" (Doug Tompkins) means weighing up what is really important in the smallest, most micro-expressive decisions. Not only under extreme conditions, in sport or when faced with challenges, but also in everyday life, small and seemingly one-off decisions become automatisms that are difficult to reverse. Being able to identify with something brings much more. It brings trust, loyalty and reliability. In times of upheaval, there is a growing longing for the cardinal virtues that Aristotle once developed, namely wisdom, justice, bravery and moderation.

Joyce B. Blackstone, 97, entered her eternal rest, Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at the Aroostook House of Comfort, while surrounded by family. She was born March 21, 1925, in Houlton, the daughter of Roy and Maude (Anderson) Barton Sr.
Joyce grew up in Aroostook County and graduated from Fort Kent High School in 1942. She continued her education at Bob Jones College in Cleveland, Tennessee, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education. Joyce returned to the County and taught seventh grade English at Caribou Middle School. She married Clayton M. Blackstone on December 30, 1947. They shared sixty-two years of marriage until his passing in 2010. Joyce and Clayton lived and raised their children on the family farm where she kept the home and worked alongside Clayton.
Joyce was a longtime member of the Dunntown Advent Christian Church serving as a deaconess, church collector, and Sunday School teacher as well as being actively involved in the Women's Mission Circle. Her faith was the most important part of her life, and she and Clayton instilled those Christian values into their children.
She enjoyed putting jigsaw puzzles together, doing crossword puzzles and word finds, and reading. Clayton often told people he would be a rich man if it was not for Joyce's books and music. An accomplished cook, she was well known for her fudge. Joyce was known as the "Card Lady" and many people received a card and fudge as means of encouragement from her.
She is survived by five children: Rev. Clayton Blackstone Jr. and his wife Hazel of Pittsfield, MA, Dale Blackstone and his wife Cynthia of Washburn, Doug Blackstone and his wife Barb of Easton, Gary Blackstone and his wife Laurie of Washburn, Karen Wark of Fort Fairfield, a daughter-in-law, Vicki Blackstone of Summerville, SC, eleven grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She also leaves behind a brother, Roy Barton Jr. and his wife Joyce, a sister, Betty Tompkins both of Greenville, SC, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Clayton Blackstone Sr., a son, David Blackstone, a great-grandchild, Liam Casey, a brother, Sherwood Barton, and two sisters: Phyllis Blackstone and Gloria Dinsmore.
Relatives and friends are invited for calling hours at 1:30 P.M. Monday, April 3, 2023, at the Dunntown Advent Christian Church. A celebration of life will follow at 3 P.M., with the Rev. Josh Cheney officiating. The family extends an invitation to a reception and continued fellowship at the church fellowship hall, immediately following the service. A committal service will be held at 10 A.M. Monday, July 3, 2023, at the Fairview Cemetery in Perham. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Joyce in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Dunntown Advent Christian Church (P.O. Box 491, Washburn, ME 04786). Arrangements were made by Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, ME 04769. Online condolences and memories may be shared with the family at: www.duncan-graves.com
