I sighed as I heard a loud knock on my front door. Grabbing the bag of flour I made my way to the door assuming it was just my neighbor Marcy wanting some for baking again. The girl never seemed to have any and always came over for mine which I didn’t mind. I just started buying more when I would go to the store.
“Marcy hun you should really just-” I froze as I saw Strange on the other side of the door and a young girl stood next to him.
“y/n nice to see you.” He spoke. With a sigh I sat the flour down on the small table by the door before inviting them in.
“Tea?” I asked while making my way into the kitchen as they both followed after me. The young girl politely nodded her head and took a seat at the island along with Strange who sat a very old looking book down on the countertop.
It was silent for a minute. The only sound being me getting down three mugs and the teapot whistling on the stove.
I sat the tea in front of the two along with some sugar as I took to standing across from them.
“What do you need Strange?” My tone came out more bitter than I wanted it to but I couldn’t help it. After I left what remained of the Avengers I had hoped I would never have to see his face or any of theirs ever again. That's why I moved to Ohio so that I would be away from the never ending drama that is New York and to be close to my sister's grave.
“I- We need your help. This Is America Chavez. She’s able to travel the multiverse.” With those words I choked on my tea.
“The multiverse?” I questioned not trusting my ears to have heard the right thing.
“Yes. You know about it?” He asks as he and the girl, America, looked at each other.
“Vision often talked of his theories during movie nights” The word Vision seemed to make me scowl remembering how he got the life with the person I had loved. The person who was supposed to be my wife.
“You said Wanda said the same thing” This was the first time the girl had spoken and the way she said Wanda had made your whole body shiver. It was as if she was scared of the woman.
“You spoke to her?” I hadn’t heard anything of her since that night I left. I expected to at least see something about her on the news but she never came up.
“Yeah. She’s after me. She’s been sending these weird creatures after me to take my powers.” America explained as she fiddled with the mug.
“She has the dark hold y/n” The words caused me to stiffen. I had only heard of the dark hold a few times while I was studying with Strange but I knew it was nothing good. It was described as the book of the damned and anyone who touched it became corrupted. “I need your help in protecting America. Yours and Wanda’s magic are almost complete opposites. While hers is chaos magic while yours is Order magic.” The two shared another look as if they both knew something I didn’t. I watched as Strange opened the book he had brought and flipped to a page. “With the help of the darkhold Wanda has become the Scarlet Witch. Everything anyone had ever known about her is written in this book like a prophecy.” I nodded as I listened to his words. “It also speaks of yours.” He slides the book over to me and setting my tea down I quickly read the page he had opened to.
The Scarlet Witch bringer of chaos and the White Fawn bringer of life and creation:
The Scarlet Witch is not born; she is forged. She has no coven or need for incantation. Her power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme. It is her destiny to destroy the world.
The White Fawn is the opposite of the chaos bringer. She is born to counteract the actions of the Scarlet Witch. Her destiny is to heal the wounds, love, and calm the Chaos Witch.
My eyes scanned the page three more times before I slammed the book shut. I watched as America jumped in her seat and I sent her an apologetic smile as I slid the book back to Strange.
“That can’t be right or it can’t be me. Wanda does not love me. I will not let my destiny be what is written in some book. What is she even after in the multiverse?” My question seemed to keep Strange quiet for a moment before he spoke.
“You”

Something had gone wrong.
Terribly, terribly wrong.
He wasn’t quite sure what had gone wrong, just that something had. He could sense it, traveling from his fingertips all the way to his heart. One minute he had been casting his spell, and the next, he felt a shift, and now he was here.
Stephen brushes his hand on his shirt, glancing around the busy street and trying to place a familiar sight. This was still New York, the same Empire State in the distance. But he knew better, there was a hint of something in the air, and Stephen knew to always trust his instincts. He thinks through his options and concludes that the best one is to find the sanctum. If he's right, he assumes he was in another universe and that they probably had their own Dr. Strange. He always did want to meet another version of himself. The question was, would they be best friends or enemies?
He walks down the familiar streets, noting that the names are consistent and nothing looks out of place. Which was a little odd given he had yet to find out what made this world different from his. Yet, that idea was quickly negated when he stepped foot in front of his home.
He could feel the energy wrapped around his wrists, and it wasn’t his. Someone else was here — someone that wasn’t him. He takes careful steps towards the door, sparks flying from his fingers just in case. The doors open with ease, and his eyes narrow in anticipation. He takes a careful step inside, hands up in defense as he prepares for whoever is guarding it to start a war. But no one enters and the doors slam shut behind him. He lowers his guard, left with nothing but the orange glow of his magic. The feeling was stronger now. It was so familiar on the tip of his tongue, like something from his past he can’t quite capture.
At the sound of footsteps, his hand flies out, a spell flying at the intruder. But they easily deflect it with their hand. “That’s not necessary.”
And that’s when Stephen knew what the feeling was. It was the feeling of you.
He watches as you descend the stairs, hood falling back to reveal the same eyes he always loved. He knew for sure what had gone terribly wrong. You stopped at the end of the stairs, tilting your head.
“You’re not from here, are you?” You asked softly.
Your voice is light, airy, and sweet like he remembered it. You were exactly how he remembered you, down to the curve of your nose. It makes his stomach lurch as he stares at what must be a joke.
“What gave it away?” He asked, trying to keep his voice steady as he meets your glassy eyes.
You point towards the Eye of Agamotto around his neck. “I’m the only person allowed to wear that.”
He shrugs, playing arrogant though his heart aches deeply. “That all?”
You press your lips into a thin line, feeling the weight of the room on your shoulders. “Well, that and Stephen Strange is dead.”
He wasn’t sure why that shocked him so much. Maybe he really was arrogant enough to believe he couldn’t die. But it was only after you said that did he notice the frown on your lips and the dark circles under your eyes. He glances around the Sanctum and notes the condition of dust and darkness. A place that wasn’t very suited to the you he knew. “Funny, where I’m from, (Y/N) (L/N) is dead.”
“It seems we’re not exactly the same variant then.”
Stephen quirks a brow. “How so?” He wanted you to so desperately not be a carbon copy of her. Yet, by the looks of it, you were. Nothing about you was different except for maybe the whole sorcerer supreme thing. He’s not really shocked by it. You were always so determined. He doesn’t doubt this Earth was lucky to have you. He just wishes he did too.
“My last name isn’t (L/N),” You said with a soft frown. “It’s Strange.”
Stephen’s lips part as his eyes fall to the ring on your finger. It’s identical to the one buried in his sock drawer. The one that should have been around your finger until…
You both stand in silence. Stephen, desperately trying not to shed a tear or kiss you. He’s dreamed of this day for so long, but now that it was here? It felt like a nightmare — it was a nightmare. He couldn’t stay. He got a taste of what he finally wanted, only for it to be taken away moments later. He often thought of doing it himself, going back to that night and changing it. You weren’t dead, you couldn’t possibly be dead, and if there was any proof, then it was this Dr. Strange.
You take a deep breath. “It’s weird, isn’t it? Everything you’ve ever wanted is right in front of you, and yet…” You trail off, sniffling at the end. Stephen wasn’t sure what happened to your Stephen. Maybe the same thing to him, but obviously, this Stephen had gotten lucky enough to marry you. He would kill for that opportunity. In fact, that thought has crossed his mind a few times. He could utter a few words and rewrite history as he knew it. Somehow though, the idea of everything he would miss out on stopped him. Not to mention the chances of him succeeding were little to none.
“Yeah,” Stephen chokes out in reply. He stares at his boots, refusing to look at you. He fears if he does, he might never go back.
Your fingers drift towards your ring, twisting it around your finger as you try to think of what to say. “Did she lead you on this path?” You gesture towards his outfit and the cloak.
Stephen nods, recalling the night his life changed forever. All it took was one accident, one mistake, and he found himself in the worst pain imaginable. A pain that didn’t go away, even after everything. Even after years and years, anniversary after anniversary.
“He led me on mine too,” You whispered. “I always did wonder what would have happened if it was me instead.”
And here Stephen was, wondering the exact same question. He finally looked up again, realizing just how broken you looked. It didn’t matter who died — the outcome was the same. One Dr. Strange, broken and just as alone.
“Did you ever try going back?” He blurts out.
You let out a small laugh, “Of course I did. I got so close once I could see him, but what good would it do?”
“You’d get to be with him again,” Stephen replied. “Is that not worth everything?”
“It is,” You whisper, lip trembling. “But I can’t change what made me who I am. Besides, you’re proof of my theory. I chose to believe that in the infinite number of worlds, we had to make it on one of them.”
Stephen shakes his head. “Do you really believe that?”
A tear slips down your cheek. “I have to.”
“Or else?” Stephen probes.
“Or else I’m going to beg you to stay here.”
“And I wouldn’t say no.” He takes a tentative step towards you, wiping the tear from your cheek and meeting your eyes again. Your eyes are so full of life, youth, wisdom, and all the things he wanted to see from you. The eyes of his wife.
“I still love you,” He whispered, letting his own tears feel as you pull him close. He knew this was dangerous. He might give in and just stay. He would never know what happened back home. This was home — you were his home.
“I still love you too,” You said. “And I know in some other world, we’re happy.”
“Perhaps we can indulge in that fantasy here just a little longer?” Stephen suggests, pressing a tender kiss to your forehead. He just needed a few more moments with you.
“You know what happens if we do.”
Stephen pulls back, pressing his forehead to yours. “I know, just please, five more minutes.”
“Five minutes could be forever.”
“If only it was.”
