Dragon Ball Super 041

“Hey, this arc sucked.  We should have a better one.”

Last time, Champa was about to destroy his entire team for losing this tournament, when a new god suddenly appeared on the tournament stage.  Shin doesn’t recognize him, and the Elder Supreme Kai has to explain that it’s “Grand Zeno, the Omni King”.  I still think of him by the name given in the subtitles: The King of Everything”.  But I guess Funimation had to juice it up a bit with “Omni-King”. 

So this is a welcome change, as this whole U6/U7 arc has been Beerus and a second, fatter Beerus rubbing it in everyone’s faces that they can pretty much do whatever they want without any consequences.  As it turns out, they have a boss of their own, and they tremble before him just like everyone else trembles before them.  Zeno is the ruler of all twelve universes, and he could destroy them all in an instant if he wanted to.  Naturally, all the gods bow before him. 

Turns out Zeno found out about this tournament, and came to scold Beerus and Champa for doing this instead of... you know... their jobs.  Whis and Vados wholeheartedly agree, and complain that all Beerus does is eat and sleep, and all Champa does is eat and eat.  Zeno suggests finding new Gods of Destruction, but then he says he’s just kidding. 

As for the torunament, Zeno seems mildly disappointed that no one told him about this thing, but when he watched the matches, he was pleased with the idea.  And he believes that this could be even more fun if they included the other universes. 

Goku is all for that idea, and he steps forward to talk with Zeno.  His guards take exception to this, but Zeno agrees to talk with Goku, and they basically just agree to do the thing he just said he wanted to do.  Goku offers a handshake, and this is treated like a suspenseful moment, but Zeno returns the shake and says Goku is “funny”. 

After Zeno leaves, everyone gives Goku crap about how dangerous it was for him to approach Zeno, but Goku doesn’t see the big deal.  Just because he can destroy the multiverse doesn’t mean he will.  And if he wants this big tournament he’s proposing, then he needs fighters to participate in it. 

And this informs the entire dynamic between Goku and Zeno.  While everyone else is horrified by Zeno’s power, Goku understands him.  He sees that Zeno just wants to have a good time, and Goku is honest enough and genuine enough that he can simply speak his mind without Zeno feeling disrespected. 

Anyway, Champa and Beerus now realize that this tournament they’ve thrown is basically meaningless now.  At best it was just practice for the next one. So Champa can’t destroy his team after all, because he’ll need them later.  But Beerus still won, so Champa surrenders the six Super Dragon Balls to him and leaves.  Goku asks Hit to schedule a rematch, but Hit isn’t interested in that anytime soon.  Cabba calls Vegeta “Master”, which Vegeta isn’t too happy about.

And guess who’s awake.  Majin Buu slept through this whole business, but he’s up now.  Also, Mr. Satan wants Monaka to join his dojo.  I’m not sure if he bought into Monaka’s performance, or if he recognizes that Monaka was just pretending, the way Mr. Satan does.

That leaves the matter of the last Super Dragon Ball, which Beerus will need to get his wish.  Bulma has a radar to detect it, but she asks Beerus to promise not to wish for anything bad before she uses it.  At first, she thinks it isn’t working, but then Android 18 notices there are seven blips on the radar, indicating that they’re already together somehow.  Monaka suggests this is a matter of failing to think in three dimensions, something that comes up a lot in his line of work, since he has to read cosmic maps and such.  That gives Whis an idea, so he tells everyone to hop in the Hexahedron and get off the planet.

As it turns out, the planet they were standing on this whole time had been the seventh Super Dragon Ball all along.  Piccolo speculates that it ended up here and collided with an asteroid.  Over time, the debris would have been drawn in by the Dragon Ball’s gravitational field, and formed the rocky surface of the “Planet With No Name”. 

This leads to an elaborate, overwrought sequence where the Super Dragon emerges from the Balls.  At first he seems to be the size of a planet, but then he keeps getting bigger, until it looks like he’s dwarfing entire galaxies.  I’m not sure how much of this is literally happening, and Whis informs the rest of them that this is all merely necessary to interact with the dragon.

Finally, they face a smaller (though still enormous) version of the dragon, and Beerus relays his wish to Whis in the “language of the gods.”  He then tells Bulma and the rest that he wished for a more comfortable bed to sleep in, which seems very anticlimactic.

But then we cut to Champa and Vados on their way home, and Vados detects something new in Universe 6.   She shows Champa the planet Earth, which doesn’t impress him until she explains that it’s the Earth of Universe 6.  Apparently, Beerus wished for it to be restored, along with its population, so that Champa could enjoy its cuisine.  Awwww. 

This undoubtedly the best part of this arc.  A lot of it was just pointless filler and unsatisfying matches, but I like the poetry of Beerus and Champa having this wager over Earth, and then Beerus winning the bet and using his wish to give Champa what he wanted.  “What would a god wish for?” indeed.

On Beerus’ planet, we see Monaka return to his normal job, which is some sort of delivery truck driver.  And Beerus has loaded his truck with more cartoon treasure as payment for his services.  In spite of the stress Monaka was placed under, he seems to find this a worthwhile experience.

And that’s it for the tournament, although we do have one more episode with an epilogue of sorts...

New Life Festival Outskirts, Windhelm

The cloying smell of blackberries cooking filled the entire house. Wulfric had gone to much trouble concealing the purchase from Mirne, sneaking away to a vendor while she was busy. He kept the preserves hidden until this very day when Mirne was going to pick up some exotic herbs for her cooking. She always did the cooking, and for good reason. Mirne was good at it. He wanted to show his appreciation for it.

On top of that, he could show her that he cared for her. That was the one thing that she hinted about but never outright accused him of. She didn’t understand how much she meant to him. He only hoped that his blackberry tart would do the job. Unlike Mirne, he wasn’t very good at cooking.

While the tart was baking, he was busy hanging mistletoe all over. He pinned some up over the threshold, several bunches, in fact. Every few feet, he hung some from the rafters, spacing them out so that the entrance room was covered with dangling mistletoe.

“She’ll have to kiss me this time,” he muttered to himself.

It was not like Mirne had no interest in him. She had admitted to loving him, but she also protested any romantic relationship with him. Six months ago, they attended a wedding of his dear friend, Carmine. After he tried to kiss her, Mirne rebuked him and told him that she would love to have a relationship with him, but she couldn’t. Through tears, she told him she was afraid.

Wulfric didn’t know what she was afraid of. She didn’t talk much about her past before she joined the House of Dibella. When he asked, she would say that her childhood didn’t matter, as her experiences as a priestess was what shaped her into the woman she currently was. He never pushed her beyond those words.

That, however, didn’t mean that they would never have a relationship or that he shouldn’t do nice things for her. Carmine told him that she would be won over by Wulfric’s charms, but he didn’t want to win Mirne over. She would need to come to terms with her past.

The door creaked open. It was a funny thing. He couldn’t remember a time when the house felt so alive. Mirne brought such beauty in the house, and, although he secretly railed against it at first, he was appreciative of her and her devotion to Dibella. Was he really living before she came into his life?

"The house smells delicious." Mirne shook off the snow blanketing the thick white-fur cloak covering her entire body, and a second later, murmured, “Did you bake a blackberry tart while I was away?”

“Aye.”

“And this mistletoe?” She looked up and observed his handiwork. ‘Where did it all come from, Wolf?”

“It seemed to have sprouted all on its own.”

“Really?” she laughed. “You expect me to believe that this mistletoe sprouted and grew all on its own, in just the time I’ve been gone? It’s been a day, Wolf. That’s hardly enough time.”

“It must be magic,” he continued the ruse. “It’s growing all over the top of the doorframe. It’s growing everywhere. Look. Isn’t it strange? But look, you’re standing under some. You know what they say you have to do when you’re standing under mistletoe.”

She lifted an eyebrow.

“And look at this!” He pointed aloft to the rafter overhead. “I’m standing under some, as well!”

“What are the odds of that?” Mirne lowered her fur hood and shook her head, freeing her locks from the hood’s confines. Bits of her mousy brown hair danced from the movement. He thought it was impossible for her to appear more attractive to him, but every day brought something new.

Wulfric wanted her, but not only as one who would wish to revere the Aedra Dibella. He wanted Mirne as a lover and longed for her to confront her past, so that they could have a future together.

‘It’s never happened before,” he said.

“It couldn’t have anything to do with the reason you sent Alvis to market with me instead of you accompanying me?”

At the mention of his name, the gray elkhound sat next to her, looked at Wulfric, and wagged his tail. Alvis was always a happy hound. However, he seemed to be ore joyful since Mirne came into their life — and Alvis was not the only one.

“No, nothing at all,” Wulfric said, doing his best to sound innocent and failing. “I have no idea how this all got here. It must have been some sort of forest spirit.”

“Forest spirit? Why would a forest spirit cover your dwelling in mistletoe?” Her voice lilted like a jovial melody. It lifted his spirit as always. “What motive would they have for that? Does it want us to kiss so it can watch? That doesn’t make sense, Wolf?”

“I don’t deign to understand mystical beings, Miri,” he laughed, once more. “Their motives are beyond any of us. Could be, it’s just having a bit of fun with some mortals.”

She didn’t protest this time, and he tried to squelch the hope surging within him. He wondered if she were ready to pursue a relationship. Wulfric wouldn’t bring it up to her, giving her enough grace to make that choice herself.

Still, she needed to know that he was serious about them. He was not like one of Dibella’s patrons. Wulfric wanted to wed her, to watch their children grow, and live the rest of his life with her.

“Then get over here,” he growled, “and I’ll show you games. This might be fun, but it’s no game.”

As he kissed her, she tasted like the tart snowberries she must have eaten on her way home and wine. Her icy left cheek felt cold beneath his hand, but the fire in the fireplace would quickly warm her.

What struck him the most was that he was lost, lost in her and her warm arms. Wulfric closed his eyes. This would be a New Life festival he would remember for years to come.

Ten years ago I gave myself the challenge of watching 52 films in 52 weeks. I called it, "If you want to direct, watch things." My goal was to learn what I liked, why, and to encourage myself to write.

I exceeded my objective and ended my year with 150 films. I learned a little more about myself and what I could accomplish.

Over the years, I have lost motivation for my personal wellbeing. I've been overworked, stressed, depressed, unable to focus - but I'm feeling better now.

So, now I want to do it again. I want to push myself, challenge myself... because I can, because I'm up to it.

Machoke #067- It has infinite power, but don’t worry! This weird belt holds it back. Can still kill you with a finger. Be glad it's nice.

Machamp #068- Can now be as infinitely powerful twice as efficiently. Don’t ask it to do needlework

Bellsprout #069- Just a fly eating plant that can move at terrifying speeds

Weepinbell #070- A plant that poisons then eats anything that moves

Victreebell #071- Same as previous, but it definitely eats people

Farfetch’d #083- A duck that obsesses over a leek that it uses like a paper towel roll sword. Also what they’re holding changes names every other entry even though it is clearly either a leek or scallion. Oh and they’re endangered.
