Random thought: where did drain flies live before there were drains?
bogleech answered this already, coincidentally! I have had drain flies of various species including the household Clogmia albipunctata (haha. Clogmia) develop in containers where I macerate animal bones or dead leaves.
as often the case with household animals, there’s usually a lot more elsewhere that people don’t come into contact with and don’t realize exist! I believe there’s over 2,500 species in the family Psychodidae. one group of the drain flies are known as sandflies, and the subfamily name—Phlebotominae—hints at the fact that they’re hemtophagous (blood drinking) like mosquitoes! they’re the vectors of a few tropical diseases like leishmaniasis.
anyway, like cockroaches, house centipedes, silverfish, and pigeons among others, drain flies are an example of where the rare one or two synanthropic species become the most familiar to humans to the point of being synonymous with the larger group, even if they’re fairly unique among them

A Drain Fly’s Happy Place Is Down Your Pipes | Deep Look
Ever wonder how those tiny, jumpy flies got onto your bathroom wall? Well, they came out of your sink drain after growing up down in the pipes. A goofy, long “mustache,” fuzzy wings and some aquabatics help them survive in that soggy environment.

This is a drain fly. I can't stop myself any time I see one anywhere from fawning over it. They may be flies that live in muck, but they sure are incredibly fluffy. They are your personal plumbers, so don't be afraid of them.

Let me introduce you to one of my favorite insects, the humble drain fly.
Also known as the moth fly, we are specifically taking about Clogmia albipunctata. These adorable little cuties are true flies and their natural habitats are swampy wet areas.
"But Alex," you scream, frothing at the mouth, eyes bulging, "Why are they called drain flies?"
While the adults eat nectar or just water, the larvae are aquatic and eat decaying matter. Drain flies have discovered that our sewage system is a neverending supply of disgusting organic stuff just decaying away. Yummy! As such, they can often be found in drains. Maybe you've had drain flies? Rejoice, for you have been blessed.
The best thing about these guys?
They fly like drunk idiots.
They are special little guys, perfect in every way.

I'm so averse to making phone calls that I can force myself to do entire lists of chores just to get out of it. Want me to do anything? Threaten me with a vaguely formal phone call to any adult human

hell brain likes to go i need to draw one million different fun scenarios all day but as soon as I actually get home where I can actually do this all it wants to do is to design a logo for a fictional phone provider that only exists in the background of the extensive clusterfuck of endless worldbuilding for an AU that I know I will never actually make anything for
