VERY long overdue, this was wip that was supposed to be a sketch of what i want Athy, Jetty & Kiel’s outfits to look like in my Reincarnated!Jennette au that continuously haunts me for some reason. except i got bored at some point and just now i decided to rush coloring them now for some reason now that i remembered it's existence.

i did this because i ended up feeling dissatisfied with my first attempt at designing a debutante dress for r!jetty since to me i just don't like how i executed things. granted i'm not really serious about my art but the colors looked too muddy lol. aside from that though, i also wanted to finally draw Athy's and Kiel's outfits mention in my other posts since they're obviously integral to this au.

i went more in depth in my first design post, but i decided to stick more true to the neoclassical silhouette that came after the rococo era which heavily influenced Jetty's dresses in both timelines in the manhwa. obviously a huge departure imo bc i think Jetty and her bows are too iconic to be left out of this one and i find it unfortunate that even when redoing my design i still couldn't find a way to incorporate bows lol. besides that, i'm quite happy with how her dress turned out this time.

i didn't point this out in the actual photo but if you're wondering why there are green marks on her neck and hands, long story short it was Viscount Patterson's fault (not to spoil on my own au but they do meet earlier).

Athy's dress is an homage to traditional debutante dresses being white, with the added edge that Athy's dress isn't supposed to stay white and turns into the iconic pink the more she dances. i wanted this to look more elegant and as if she is becoming a blooming flower as the night goes on. though i do wish i did more with the dress since it's supposed to represent how Athy is fully taking her life in her own hands to become Ruler of Obelia and thus, blooming into a new person. i should do a separate sketch for her dress bc it's more complex than what i had intended.

Kiel basically went full-on duke of the north with this one haha. full-disclosure, yes Kiel and Athy do have a thing with each other in this au though i don't intend for them to end up with each other, so i drew his outfit to compliment Athy's which ended up making him look like a Izek clone. however i specifically chose the dark colors because at that point, he and Jennette are still grieving the death of the Duchess due to... very unfortunate circumstances.

for the accessories Ijekiel and Jennette are wearing i'm keeping their connection to Duchess Alpheus, she's like the Lily in this au except she tragically passes away in their late childhood. it's an event that acts as a turning point for their characters and puts a strain on their relationship since she was the only adult in their lives who saw them for who they are outside of being Roger's pawns.

While most of their core details remain the same, I gave them an overdue update to reflect the current changes to the au. As a whole:

The kids were born in the Three Broomsticks during the Battle of Hogwarts (long story lol)

Because of their vast Magic, they were approved to start Hogwarts one year early, so they're a year younger than most of their classmates during the events of Magic Awakened.

Like Reina, they're dual enrolled at Vytaria, so they only take core classes at Hogwarts.

They inherited their mother's ability to detect people's true emotions and intentions, so they're well aware of who to avoid.

Oldest of the four. Due to the Chimerism that runs in his mother's side of the family, he fused with what would've been their 5th sibling.

He's known to give of a very cool kid vibe, is usually calm and collected and easy to get along with.

Corvo is Narcoleptic and prone to sleeping a lot. He can still retain info while asleep, which proves to be a big help during classes.

From an early age he has always loved music, and manifests Symphony Magic when he's older. His spells are said to have a musical beat to them.

His signature green discs are created from Magic, allowing him to create beats that enhance the spells of his own as well as allies, and can disorient opponents.

Explored different musical instruments, and his favorites are the violin and piano.

Second oldest of the four

Loves food and is almost always snacking on something in between meals. Would manifest Food Magic as one of her types.

Was always the most energetic of her siblings, and was already fast as soon as she could crawl.

During early childhood, she played all kinds of sports. Her top favorite is skating, and she was taught by her mom how to transfigure her shoes into skates. Ava is usually seen skating around the castle.

Bonded with Robyn almost immediately. The two would then try out for Quidditch in their second year, and Ava herself becomes a Chaser.

Second youngest of the four.

Raven was born on the Autism Spectrum and her biggest focus at an early age was baking. She often helped her mom out in the kitchen as soon as she was old enough to, and would manifest Food Magic.

At Hogwarts, she often spends most of her downtime in the kitchens baking.

Thanks to her quiet and reserved nature, she found herself becoming good friends with Daniel. She'd often give him sweets during times he'd stay up late brewing potions.

She often sells her sweets to any classmate or staff member interested, much like Reina once did during her school days. Named her mini business The Witching Flour.

He's often seen with his sketchbook and ink case. At school, he becomes fast friends with Lottie thanks to their shared love of art.

from there very little went on to change between the two of you: you two still snuck out of your rooms in the middle of the night to indulge in all of the left over treats from that day’s evening meal, she still ranted endlessly to you about her relationship with her mother and you were still there to comfort and assure her, you still accompanied her out into the nearby forest with the overused excuse of ‘keeping an eye on the princess so she doesn’t get hurt’, and you still shared glances in the middle of the banquets her parents forced her to attend that wordlessly conveyed her endless frustration at the outfit she’d been shoved into and your promise of helping her escape the festivities at the first opportunity

but there were little additions here and there that were brought on by your freshly budding romantic relationship

the lingering touches when you helped her adjust her clothing or fetched her something to eat or drink from the far end of the table — not quite long enough to draw suspicion, but intimate enough to have you both averting your eyes and covering your smiles with bitten lips or a cough

the fleeting glances whenever you’d pass each other in the castle halls, her usually in the middle of a lecture from her mother and you always in the middle of some task assigned by your superior — only lasting a second or two at most before you went your separate ways, but more than enough to have your moods lightening as your minds drifted away from the ‘now’ to that not-so-distant ‘soon’ when you’d finally get to spend time together again

the nights spent sneaking out of your rooms now used as an excuse to do everything that couples should do now that there were no prying eyes to judge you — she was by no means a good dancer, never had been, but you couldn’t bring yourself to care as you clumsily stomped and spun around the empty courtyard; smiling and giggling until your sides and cheeks ached, so disgustingly in love that you forget about why you need to hide yourselves from the world for just a little while

the horse rides out into the highlands where she gets to show off to you and gloat about her abilities and affections as freely as she longs to do back home — hitting bullseye after bullseye without a single miss just to hear your praise, and cheekily coaxing her horse to speed up or suddenly stop at random just so you’ll have to cling to her even tighter (of course you catch onto her plan after the first sudden stop, but you let her have her fun as it’s not often you two get the chance to be so affectionate with one another)

and, naturally, when you’re alone you two are much more affectionate with each other: kissing, cuddling, offering reassuring touches, and even doing stupid crap to make each other laugh

it’s difficult to be forced apart during the day and to be unable to express your love for each other as openly and proudly as you both crave, but somehow you still manage to keep your love for each other a secret like you’d agreed — or, well, it stays a secret from her parents and the other servants up until the whole bear situation… her brothers, on the other hand, found out a few months in when they went looking for some extra baked goods and found the two of you cuddling and sharing a large helping of sweets

(their silence was easily bought with the promise of extra food in the future, but the two of you remained on edge whenever any of the triplets lingered near her parents for longer than usual)

I am shocked that this is the first time I’ve drawn these two together aha. I made Seabreeze back in June before yesterday, had only drawn her once aside from her ref. I love Seabreeze sm tho so I was super happy to get to draw her again <3 And then ofc it was great to include Luau in this as well! I hadn’t drawn her since last May, so she’s been long overdue for some time in the spotlight as well haha

This was a super fun piece to make as well, I loved the posing here hehe. I had to fudge their height difference a little bit to make this work (Luau is a little bit taller than she’s shown here) but I still think it came out rlly cute :]

there's a bunch of filipino words here (i took advantage of the fact that izana is half-filipino lol) so i'll explain them under the cut along w a bunch of other stuff

mundo means world, ang tahanan at mundo roughly translates to the home and world but in the full lyric it says aking sinta, ikaw na ang tahanan at mundo which means my love, you're my home and my world. i just put ang tahanan at mundo bc it's short and wouldn't come off cheesy versus if i put in the entire lyric lol

i chose mundo by iv of spades bc it was one of the most popular love songs in 2018. i loved it sm (still love it now). christina specifically requested that i draw izana in the final timeline which takes place in 2018, so it all fits perfectly.

sana all roughly translates to i hope everyone but it's kind of an indirect way of saying that you're jealous (not the bad kind of envy that u wish others hell it's acc the opposite) of someone's experience and wish for everyone (including yourself) to experience it; it's really like saying i hope everyone experiences that.

my freebie which i call the white day ver. is inspired by taylor swift's i'd lie. it just screams izana/izatina to me (ㅅ´ ˘ `) it was from her debut album that was released in 2006 that's why i drew teenager versions of izatina.

Hey, everyone, so besides commissions and all my SPECIL SALESMAN art, I would also like to share more things (like original art) and draw fanart for other things. Spamton G. Spamton is a mainstay on my blog. He is very important to me, and if you don't like him, then too bad!

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (17+ GORE HORROR. Do not look up if you are sensitive.) - Recently fell in love with this series. I consider the original anime from the 2000s to be a masterpiece. I want to draw my favorite character, Takano!

Taimanin universe (17-18+. Seriously don't look it up if you're a minor lol.) - I really love some of the characters of this series, like my waifu Ingrid. I've drawn her before, and I want to draw her again. Funny enough, one of my pieces is featured in the mobile game Action Taimanin as a poster on the wall for a level. Sometimes, I see people use my art as an icon. It's very flattering!

Dragon Half (15+) - One of my all-time favorite mangas ever made from the 1980s. I think it's long overdue I make a fanart for it.

Winx Club - I have numerous unfinished fanarts for this series. I love it so much, even though Sailor Moon is superior lmfao.

Shoujo Tsubaki (18+. BANNED WORLDWIDE. DO NOT LOOK IT UP if you are sensitive or if you are a minor) - I watched this two nights ago, and it's so sad... I plan to do an analysis of it. I honestly don't think it's the worst thing ever, but I can see why people find it offensive, as it touches upon A LOT OF taboo topics.

Psychonauts - This game series man... So good. I want to draw something of my favorite character, Helmut, and his husband, Bobby. I just absolutely adore them. 😭

Touhou Project - It's been a long time since I've drawn proper fanart for this series. I have A LOT on my DeviantArt account, but I'd like to draw my favorite girls again.

Super Mario Bros - Peach is my original waifu. I've tried drawing her many times in my style, but I've kind of failed. I also really like Princess Daisy's N64 version and want to draw her again. Rosalina/Rosetta, I will also think about it.

The Legend of Zelda - This one is a little... Difficult for me. This is one of my favorite game series ever, but I really struggle to make art for it. I want to since it heavily inspired my work, but damn is it hard... Hopefully, I can break out of my shell for this.

Various other Eroge titles (18+) - Eroge are any games with erotic elements that originate from Japan. There are so many I like that range from simply being romantic to utterly insane. If you're a minor, do not look up anything.

Runescape - How I love thee. It's been a while since I've drawn fanart for it. I love the Elves haha!

Creepypasta or ghost legends/stories - I've been listening to a lot of these lately and I feel a bit inspired to draw some of the things that pop up in my imagination.

an | the way i just wanted to troll the shit out of this fic but i couldn't bc i want to be a good friend to @starksbabie lolol- so here it is!! my first and probably last tony piece ever. when i had the idea of dedicating a few pieces through whumptember and kinktober to close friends, nyx was the first gal i thought of. and if you know our relationship at all, you KNOW our (pretty much only) point of conflict is tony lol. so as an ode to her, a favor to the tony fans, and a brutal therapy exercise (lmao), i made myself do this. and it's probably shit, but hey. i did it.

Chewing on the end of your pen, your eyes ran for what felt like the millionth time over the jumble of notes in front of you. Zeroing in on the lame attempt of a diagram you had managed to scribble out, you tried to hold in your groan as you heard your boss ending his call.

"Alright smarts, better give me what you got. The team over there's been riding my ass all day- they're not in the mood to be patient." When you shot the dark-haired man a look, he chuckled lightly at you. "Oh- what's with the face? Don't tell me you're grumpy. I told you to take lunch like an hour ago."

"Whatever. No time to eat," you sighed, clicking your pen shut.

"Nope, but apparently enough to make a snack of the stationary," he nodded at the chewed end of your writing utensil as he rolled his chair over from his desk to yours. "Wanna show me what you came up with?"

"Not really," you mumbled, keeping your gaze lowered as the man peeked over. Raising an eyebrow at you, Tony studied your work.

"Doesn't look half bad, they're gonna like the specs. It's a good thing you're doing the drawing and not me. But I thought we discussed this part..." Reaching a finger up, he pointed at the box you had left empty. Setting down your pen, you let out another huff of air, running a hand over your hair to smooth it back as you finally let out a long-overdue groan.

"I couldn't figure it out," you admitted, crossing your arms in defeat. "You can check my math, but I did it over. Twice. The model won't run, when I plugged it into the simulator I got an error code. We can't send it off like this."

"Oh?" Tony asked, eyes glossing over the notes and calculations you had written out in the margins of the page. "Well that's fine, it must be something in the-" His finger moved to point to a table, only earning a shake of your head as you sighed again.

"Tony," your voice was soft, almost approaching vulnerable as you finally lifted your eyes to look over at the man. "It's the whole thing. I made a mistake somewhere back in the beginning, and I can't figure it out. And now I... whenever I look it over, I just... everything..." To your surprise, as you stumbled over your words, he only appeared to listen patiently as he leaned back in his chair, crossing one leg over the other. "Tony... can you help me? I really don't fucking get it."

Sucking in a breath, you waited. Knowing your boss's usual disposition, you weren't exactly expecting a compassionate response, so you were surprised when he simply offered a nod. "Sure thing, smarts. D'you have your original drafts? That'll probably be where we need to look if you're thinking it was something way back."

You paused for a second, blinking. "What," he asked, "do I have something on my face? That cupcake Pepper brought me in was more frosting than it was red velvet."

"No, sorry," you tried to snap yourself out of it, shuffling through the mess of papers in front of you until you found your original outline, gingerly offering it over. "I just... I don't know. I was expecting some disappointment, maybe."

"Nah," he shook his head as he took your papers, "to be honest, I have no idea what the hell's going on with this thing, either. I've been following your lead, and you've done a pretty bang-up job, minus whatever this hiccup is. No disappointment here, I'm sure between the two of us, we'll find the error."

Trying not to get too hung up on your surprise, all you could do was nod as Tony began to read through your notes. "See? Brilliant stuff you've got here," he commented, waving the paper in his hand. "Even the cat doodles at the bottom, this stuff's the work of a pure genius."

TL;DR I have a LOT of different AU ideas, and they really can be separated into three categories: multi-chapter story AUs, AUs focusing more on one-offs/three to five chapter arcs, and aesthetic-based AUs I would want to draw.

Between time, energy, and mental health I sadly can't engage in all of my AUs to the same degree I have Genesis Day/Kaiju!AU and Offline Valor/Borrower!AU. But if I was to only tell you about two other AUs that I haven't touched on yet, I'd say...

Urban Fantasy!AU: Unlike my University!AU (which absolutely will still be getting its own story, just waiting for the right inspo), the Urban Fantasy!AU takes place in the modern-day but in a fictional city akin to New York City or Chicago. Think something akin to Percy Jackson, where magic dwell just beneath the surface of perception—with mortal heroes fighting the forces of darkness. This would be an ensemble cast featuring Freyja, Alice, Rowan, and Zelly all as Humans (probably) and average jobs in the big city—though Freyja and one of the sides of Rolly (potentially Rowan) would be Shifters.

Sci-Fi!AU: Not much to say about this one yet! I've always loved Space Anything, so this will be me dipping my toes into it. What I can tell you is that the two main characters will be a Humanoid cloned ex-soldier (name TBD) who is brimming up with optimism who is trying to make his way in this ruthless galaxy, along with a Jovian (Giant) named Io who is an outlaw paladin on the run from her people. New couple this time! But chances are Herbeau and Rolly will have one-shots/three-to-five chapter bits off to the side.

Aside from that we have a TON of others bubbling and in the works like my Post-Apocalyptic!AU (brand new as of this morning lol), CyberPunk!AU (ideas for both Herbeau and Rolly), Gulliver but Freyja, Jack and the Beanstalk (Alice & Frey edition), Mad Max-esque Demolition Derby + roller derby with Frey as a reigning champion called “She-Wrecks” (very like, wrestler-esque AU. Just a bunch of Giants being silly and putting on shows), something with Giant!Zelly (but not QUITE sure what yet), Shrinking!Rowan (maybe tied to Doctor!Zelly?), Monster Hunter!Rowan + Werejaguar!Zelly, Gladiator!Frey, something like Sea Beasts + Mer!AU called “Cold Light!AU.”

(And ofc still having stuff like Kaiju!AU, Borrower!AU, University!AU, and the other previously established AUs on the side too<3)

The very definition of a “social butterfly” and a picture perfect example of networking, Juro is almost never seen by themself. He thrives in social environments, flitting from one conversation to the next in her tireless search for gossip at Night Raven College. They don’t mind small talk, but can get visibly antsy if a meaningless conversation drags on for too long. He’s one of the central hubs for controversy, after all, if she’s not doing something useful with her time then it’s all just a waste.

And although they were born blind, Juro seems to have a heightened spatial awareness due to the sea bunny blood running through their veins. So while she still has some trouble navigating new environments, she has a general sense of whatever’s within 5 feet (or less) of her, so he doesn’t bump into or fumble around with things as often as some people would assume he would. He also takes a tremendous amount of care into their appearance, as they were often the test subject of their parents’ (a photographer and a journalist respectively) photographs and exorbitant praise. So although they can’t see themselves, it always fills Juro with delight at being told that they look cute today. It wouldn’t be too far off to describe them as vain, as Juro is often seen enlisting the help of her peers or siblings when it comes to things like outfit coordination or making sure no accessory is out of place.

Background:

Juro was adopted at five years old by his fathers. They don’t remember much of what happened before then. One of his dads is a professional photographer while his other dad is a journalist. Juro remembers having to travel a lot during his younger years while his parents were still both relatively new in their professions, trying to break into their fields as quickly as they could by seizing any opportunity they could find. Most of his siblings (all of whom are younger than him) were adopted a little bit later, once their family became more financially stable.

She loves her family dearly, and her family loves her, often shown in the amount of praise she received when she was younger, especially when it came to her appearance. Although she couldn’t see it for herself, she adored the attention that came with it and continues to take great care of her looks to the present day. Their siblings sometimes get tired of being used as a “magic mirror” everyday by Juro (and sometimes mess with him by occasionally lying about him looking ok; they get their asses handed to them as soon as Juro finds out lol), but they depend on him a lot. He gets told that he shouldn’t stress too much over them, but with how free-spirited his parents are, he can’t help but be a little concerned.

Her penchant for sticking her nose into other people’s businesses may have stemmed from her parents as well. She never became too intrusive though. He always makes sure to take care of both his physical image as well as his figurative one. It would be a shame if everybody stopped paying attention to him because of a tarnished reputation, so he always does thorough research and makes sure to build up/fortify his social standing before spreading word of some of the more weightier scandals around campus. And even if the information given to her wasn’t entirely true, Juro might be able to work her way around it, either through the use of her unique magic or by leaning heavily into half truths that make things appear worse than they actually are. As long as everything continues to work out in their favor, Juro doesn’t really mind who they have to tear down to get what they want.

Powers:

Toxic Glamour (Unique Magic): Allows Juro to verbally or subconsciously “push” a thought into people’s heads, forcing them to believe it’s true. Those more deeply rooted in their convictions are harder to ensnare, but not impossible. Can be used on multiple people at once.

Mild Toxins from Touch: Allows Juro to temporarily numb a body part through direct touch; can try to numb more body parts or the whole body but the victim may experience major bouts of nausea if Juro chooses to do so. This ability provides a protection against toxins as well, but only for Juro.

Trivia

They’re a part of the light music club but only drops by once and while. If begged to, Juro normally joins in on the keyboard or as vocals. They know some guitar due to being taught by Cater and Lilia, but this is less frequented by them.

Her dislike of experimentally prepared food stems from Jade feeding her some strange dishes without telling her what it was beforehand. It was only halfway through her meal did he reveal that he slipped in some poisonous herbs + mushrooms in order to test her immunity to certain toxins. Juro was fine afterwards, but now she refuses to eat anything prepared by Jade.

They also really don’t like Floyd on that matter, still resenting the time he shifted everything in their dorm room slightly to the right without telling them. Juro temporarily numbed Floyd out of anger but became even more upset upon seeing him become delighted at the weird feeling their ability brought him.

Juro likes Azul slightly more than the tweels but knows not to enter into any contracts with him. They often exchange pleasantries as they pass by each other in the hallways or during slow days in the lounge. Their quid pro quo views on life are pretty similar, so it’s not uncommon for them to do small favors for one another as well.

As reference to the sea sponges sea bunnies typically eat, Juro “absorbs” information almost obsessively. Whether it be what he’s learning in class or whatever he can glean from the people around him, he can’t go one day without learning something new. The sponges sea bunnies eat are also toxic which alludes to his “toxic” personality as well.

I do have a vague concept of one of her siblings in my head! He’s gonna be a 1st year Octavinelle student (my… 3rd… octavinelle… oc… oh god) who often checks in on Juro. He helps run Juro’s social media accounts as well, acting as Juro’s personal photographer.

Juro’s never seen without their bunny eared headbands. To draw Juro without one is sacrilegious idk what else to tell you :/

As for pronouns, Juro doesn’t really care which ones you use for them. They themselves tend to change the way they refer to themselves depending on the situation (cycling between “boku (僕)”, “watashi(私)”, “atashi(私)”; rarely uses “ore (俺)” unless they become angry/upset, but even then Juro tries to keep up their facade as best they can.

Juro’s blindness is also due to irl sea bunnies not having any eyes or visual systems to rely on (or maybe they do idk some sources say otherwise), so their fur and ears are used to navigate their surroundings instead. I could’ve gone for the full “no eyes” route, but (*´-`) coloring in the eyes is my favorite part of drawing, even if they’re faded.

new (old & overdue) project !! - HAND AND EYE

the latest and final project of year 1 was Hand And Eye!! the outcome for the project was to have three identical copies of a publication - preferably to be sold at the zine fair!

(a publication which contained no words other than the name of whoever made it and a title, if any, and only used two colours, along with the colour of paper used!)

to start this project off, i attended a supervised workshop that was held with a focus on narrative sequencing. this was where we began to consider the ways in which a story could be communicated without words.

to begin, we were given some photos to analyse; what is going on in this photo? how did it happen? when and where might it have been taken? and so on. in my notes above, i did this.

this task was interesting in the sense that a LOT can actually be communicated without any words or context; literally a picture is worth 1000 words. i guess as an illustration student that would be obvious, but it was nice to apply this perspective in such a direct way.

we were then given a new task with some new photos, which encouraged us to draw in the past and the future, so to speak.

for the sketches and photo on the left, the task was to draw a few seconds before the photo might have been taken, and a few seconds after. from my perspective, the photo was pretty mundane (i could not see her face very clearly in class - she looks super worried but i didn't know!) so i created a mundane narrative; she almost missed the bus she wanted to take, but didn't in the end.

on the right, the task was to draw what things would have looked like a month before and a month after the photo might have been taken. at this point, i wanted to move on so my sketches were a lot less detailed (sorry🛌🏾) but from what i DID get down, a month before things must have been pretty normal and stable, (to me it kind of looked like a barn in the photo?) and a month later, reconstruction is underway - as can be seen by the 4 lines meant to be scaffolding show.

next, the task was to chose a picture (i picked this cool pic of some guys putting a washing machine in a boat) and to make this chosen picture the beginning, middle and ending of a narrative.

this was meant to be a fast and rough activity, where each 3 panels acted as one 'narrative'. (i really loved the look of outlining my student ID to make the panels, so this style does come up later lol)

my first row - there is a birds nest inside the machine, that the guys are carefully trying to transport.

my second row - the guys have stolen the washing machine and are being chased by a riot!

my third row - not much they're literally just struggling with the washing machine👍🏾

i think this activity was a cool way to try and reinforce the idea that without any context, an image can be interpreted in anyway very easily.

the next task was to tie two of the images together with a narrative - the whole thing being 9 panels long. for this i chose this picture of a woman sharing her singular chip with a bird with the washing machine photo, recycling my very first narrative idea from the task before ^w^

So first off, my ACOFAF art! My first ACOFAF art, to be specific. :3 I started it earlier this week and am currently on the final lineart stage. It's Wuvvy in the "burn" scene from episode 3 because I love to hurt myself.

For "Patron Saint of Lost Causes," the only context that you need is it's an essay where I just reflect on death lmao. I'm going to be self-indulgent and just post several paragraphs of the very beginning. (Discussion of death starts under the cut in case you'd prefer to avoid it.)

This is a story about the time I did not have a panic attack in the discount holiday decor aisle of the CVS on 53rd and Kimbark. The most important thing to know about the CVS on 53rd and Kimbark is that it's carpeted. The carpet is a not-quite-navy blue and contains much of the store's overwhelming menace. In tandem with the fluorescents, it makes the interior at once too dark and too glaring. This exacerbates the sensory assault from the constant pinging of self-check-out machines and the screaming red 40%-off signs that jump out from around the other side of the aisle like haunted house ghouls. I suspect that's all meant to disorient and send you weaving in deeper. Either that or someone thought it would make the place homier, which is the only other reason I can imagine for giving a drugstore carpet, as opposed to some sane and moppable linoleum like any god-fearing Target. There's an uncanniness to it, like those robots with synthetic flesh stretched over their machinery to give them supposedly friendly faces. The lack of attempt at reassurance would have been preferable.

No one looks at you in the carpeted CVS, because no one looks at anything in the carpeted CVS except for the things they came in to get, because that way they can leave the carpeted CVS faster. This is to say that it's not a bad location for a breakdown, which almost happened because I saw a stuffed rabbit in the picked-through Easter aisle. This was in May. The rabbit had been deposited onto a metal shelf crowded with items in pastel colors that look how a cube of solid fondant tastes. I thought about buying it, thinking I could bring it back to Judith, because Judith might like it, and then I became aware of the weight of my guts like a sack on a string inside me. There was no reason to buy the rabbit, because Judith was dead, which was annoying, because before I would have had a reason to buy the rabbit. This was an interruption to routine.

And I really, honest-to-God tried to have a breakdown about it. The grief was overdue anyway, so it might as well come here and now.

Come on, I thought as I slapped myself around in the aisle, with neither customer nor clerk to stop me. Say uncle. And then after a couple minutes I bought the lightbulb I'd come in for and $16.99 of discount Easter candy that I hadn't.
