As a frequent "ugh, fanon," person it's not that I don't like non-canonical character designs or interpretations as a concept. I love unique and creative ideas about fictional characters that are informed by canon but diverge from it in interesting ways that build upon the original vision! I almost never see this in fanon.

#this is about a bunch of things but rn i'm thinking about halfling tails...uninteresting repetitive pointless and in conflict with canon #more generally i get that fanworks are derivative by nature and that's the point but there's similar and there's The Same.#like. my beef with fanon is not ultimately one of HOW DARE YOU DEVIATE FROM THE HOLY WRIT #it's that it's often dull and poorly executed by people who are gathering around a single kind of stupid headcanon #there are many great individual headcanons out there but they almost never make it to fanon status #bc fanon is not a garden of many new interesting ideas. it's a single dirty pink flamingo haphazardly stabbed into the lawn.#99% of the time canon was better bc it wasn't passed through a committee that stripped it of anything interesting and made it reproducible #anyway follow for more musing on how i believe that while capitalism has DEFINITELY made art worse social media also has #most of my favorite creators end up being the ones who are either very offline or at least have very hard boundaries #and most of my favorite fan creators are involved in fandom but are also fanon (derogatory) people

Bored and under-stimulated in my office so did a study of one of the backlog of statue pictures I have saved to draw. This is one is a statue of Saint Secunda by Giuseppe Croff (1876) from the Duomo museum in Milan

#my art #I started it with a pink pencil that immediately broke so we switched to purple #the facial proportions are a little off and the pencil was dull but #and I made the cross too dark #I wish I was using charcoal and white chalk and gray paper I miss that from my art class years ago #I did not drapé the fabric heavily enough on the sleeve hmmmhgggggg

Reduction-ed!

For a first go at reduction linocut it came out well. A lot of them didn't line up quite perfectly but it's not the end of the world

There's forty one prints in total in five different background colours (orangey-yellow, pale yellow, light blue, dull pink, bright pink), eight of each (7 of dull pink) + two odd ones (the two dark purple-ish ones on the bottom row)

For the ask game, what Ban would wear on a very cold day and what one of your OCs would wear to a formal event. Actually, throw in Elaine with the cold day fit too.

Trying to come up with what the characters would wear when cold was so hard when these guys are just. Not really affected by the cold at all. Still, twas fun. I hadn't drawn Elaine before so that was nice.

Sorry I don't have the OC request too. I tuckered out lol. Maybe I'll draw one later and swing back around to it. For now here's Ban teasing Elaine because she's not Purgatory-inoculated against sub-zero temps.

#having a lot of fun with art lately #but like i have to be under perfect conditions to actually finish smth haha #its hard to get past the sketch phase i think #trying to draw poses is where i get stuck a lot often its annoying #i like using blue primarily for shading bcs it makes it look colder #and i always preferred it bcs its a nice contrast #but i originally did purplish blue for this and just looked so dull and exhausted(????)#so i kept messing w the colors and somehow ended on bright pink: a color i almost never ever use #but hey ended up looking pretty fun! i just dont think id ever use it as a main color but shading w it isnt too bad actually #catie.art.#catie.rambling.txt #art #my art #oc art
