can an apprentice request to be given a specific suffix? or is that completely out of their control?

It's not a super common thing, but an apprentice can be approached by the leader about their suffix. This only really happens when they have multiple options and the leader wants them to have input on their name. For example, if Duskpaw is both a skilled hunter and a great storyteller, they could be asked if they want to be Duskwhisker or Duskthroat. Though, as said here, there's a hierarchy in suffixes, so if you're particularly handsome but also a great fighter, you'd be defaulted to -claw over -face. You could still be approached and asked what you want to be, but it's less likely than if you have options of equal standing.

Warrior name Duskthroat. Named after her excellence in swimming and hunting underwater for fish and frogs. Duskstar is a very outspoken leader, always expressing the need of her clan first as if it was the most important, not at all caring about how the others are doing. She has little respect for other cats, especially Silentstep, often picking fights with the rouge when she makes her way up to deputyship and eventually leader.

She is however very intimidated by Bearstar, looking frail and small standing next to him, she’ll immediately bow to his commands doing anything to stay on his good side.
