Lost Chinese Lore: The Six Gods

In 2021, I began a project to dig through the Guild Wars 1 websites of all the languages, mostly hoping to recover trailers that were lost to time (mostly successfully too). I also found some lore articles that weren't available to western audiences. Such articles were known to exist - mainly lore on Abaddon for Nightfall - and those were later (mostly) canonized by ArenaNet in Guild Wars 2.

So I decided to gather and begin slowly translate them. They are now completed. And I am making this post as a link to the other posts:

Disclaimer: While there is overlap with canon lore, there is no guarantee this is all canon as well. China is known to have alterations to the story to account for regulations in that nation, so it is unclear how much of this is expanded canon or simply reworked for China and thus non-canon.

Dwayna smiles as she holds the babe, her granddaughter. Such love swells in her heart as the babe, sleeps gently in her arms. Despite being faceless, Dwayna can't help but see her son in her. The goddess smiles as the babe stirs and grips one of her fingers tightly, as if she was afraid the goddess would put her down.

“What is her name?” Dwayna asked, sparing a glance to her son- now the god of death. Grenth shifts closer to his daughter, barely a week old and already his pride and joy.

“I've decided on Caligo, mother.”

The Goddess Mother quirks up an eyebrow, “You've decided? What of her mother?”

“Desmina had made it clear she hadn't cared, as long as Caligo lives.”

Dwayna frowns at the thought of losing the babe, having to watch little Caligo dying of something makes her heart clench and tears spring to her eyes.

Her hand began to glow with a bright teal color, and gently, as to not disturb little Caligo, touched the babe's heart. She could not stop everything from harming her, but she could at least stop age from harming her.

first of all, sending <3, exams are a ride and i very much understand your pain. second, nyra brainrot! :D i feel like i'm going to word this weirdly, but does she have specific thoughts on any of the six gods? like ones she feels closer to, or relates to more or less, or literally just any thoughts at all? (we talk a lot about balthazar but less about the others, and i've been thinking a lot about the gods in general, so...ye! if you feel like talking about that go for it xD) @kerra-and-company

So first in the order of business, Alysannyra quite literally means "To Lyssa (be) the glory" in older Ascalonian (and the male version of her name is Lyssen, btw.) And I'm not saying this just for the fun, it's actually foreshadowing of her discovering she was one of Lyssa's humans when she was a small child.

And she's closest to Lyssa because of it. In season 3, in Siren's Landing, Lyssa actually expressed that yes, Nyra's the daughter of chaos and one of Lyssa's people. She calls her little Lyss, which at the time was kinda painful bc she's still grieving for Traho, whose nickname for her is Lyss, but does the goddess care? No. Little Lyss stuck, what little they've had the chance to talk. I imagine Lyssa's like "THAT'S MY GIRL GO FUCK THEM UP" in the Mists lmao

She's also fond of Dwayna, as a traditional guardian deity and the one who, she believes, can soothe all wounds, physical or otherwise. The fact she never really received that immediate soothing doesn't matter here, this is a matter of faith that she potentially could someday.

She's lowkey scared of Grenth now, so there's that. I mean she's bound to have a really interesting conversation about her coming back from the dead at some point and for all my PS brainrot mutuals, the Reaper in the Temple of Grenth on level 80 asks you to kill in Grenth's name and they'd help you so, she's been.. lowkey killing in Grenth's name, nice

All that babble about my new GW2 character and I tragically failed to actually show her off!

I had a lot of fun figuring out the design and aesthetic of a human from two different diasporas who has been blessed from childhood by Balthazar and is capable of both skilled martial fighting and fire/light/buffing magic as a Guardian. And I had two total makeover kits floating around my bank, so I broke one out to give her properly fancy hair :)

Amazing savings on the original Guild Wars on steam right now for the Autumn Steam Sale. If you've ever wanted to try out the original and gone ".... nah" at the 40 bucks price tag then this is the time. Sales don't come around often for this game, and especially not one this large. GW1 is a great game on its own merit, but for GW2 people, if you link your accounts you can earn skins and titles and achievement points from doing stuff in GW1! A few things I should point out:

If you play GW2 through steam you cannot link a GW1 account to your steam gw2 account, sorry. You'll still have a great game to play! But can't earn rewards to move over.

No such thing as a "GW1 steam account" it's just.... part of your anet account. So don't worry about the above in reverse

Eye of the north is needed for the HoM rewards and you need a base game to add eye of the north to, so you will need to own the Trilogy, or a stand-alone campaign (Prophecies, Factions, or Nightfall). Considering the trilogy is this cheap, no point going after just one campaign.

For the love of Dwayna, play the game for the game first of all, then worry about Hall of Monuments rewards later.

This is a very very very very different game to GW2 or any typical MMO. (GW1 is not an MMO anyway, it's a COORPG, Co-operative online roleplaying game). It's old, it shows its age. You can't jump, don't worry, you'll get over it.

I highly recommend starting a character in each of the campaigns so you can see the starting story as it were, then when you get to the point where you can travel to the other lands you'll have some idea which of those 3 characters you want to play on.

You will actually have to play the game to get gw2 rewards. I know this sounds silly for me to say, but I've seen my fair share of people buy the game and go "how do I get my stuff. what, I have to *play* this?"

Be patient with it, it's old and crinkly in parts, but it's a great game. <3 And seeing all the original stuff and going "I've been there in the future!" is always fun.

GW1 has a wiki just as great as the GW2 wiki. A lot of passionate people put time in it and like the gw2 wiki it's a massive community labour of love.

I'm always down to talk about all aspects of GW1 (and gw2 ofc) so if you have questions about anything, please hit me up. GW1 is where I got the nickname "Faepedia" after all :D

Ascalonian Catacombs

Fixed an issue that caused a Disarm Traps lever to be out of the reach of players.

Fixed a bug that caused King Adelbern, as well as various immobile enemies across Tyria, to be knocked down despite an active defiance bar when struck by knockback attacks.

Fixed a bug that could cause markers on active traps to not clean up after the patriarch's defeat.

Fixed a bug that could cause Tzark to interrupt himself while resetting essence collectors.

Fixed an incorrect marker on the cave troll encounter.

Caudecus's Manor

Fixed a bug that allowed Sigfast to be attacked by Separatists and potentially knocked around the area while sleeping.

Fixed a bug that caused Zojja to not be wearing her headgear during a cinematic.

Fixed an issue that allowed the “Search for the captured sergeant” objective and goals to appear before the “Overwhelm the bandit defenses” objective was completed.

Several houses no longer close their doors after the nearby gate is destroyed, to prevent players from being trapped inside.

Bandit archers now apply confusion, matching their description.

Fixed an incorrect marker on the Bridgette encounter.

Fixed an incorrect marker on the Prototype Golem encounter.

Twilight Arbor

Fixed an issue that caused the Ooze Font Waypoint's name to appear incorrectly.

Fixed a bug that could cause the Unstable Nightmare Husk to fail to become vulnerable after being hit by four Nightmare Essences.

Fixed a bug that could cause Sparki's Ground Bloom skill to continue launching fireballs after Sparki finished spinning.

Fixed a bug that could cause an airship to be untargetable with EMP skills during the bonus objectives of the Aetherblade path.

Sorrow's Embrace

Fixed a bug that could cause the Elite Dredge Resonator near the beginning of the dungeon to not retreat when players approached after choosing a path.

During the "Help Rasolov free workers by defeating foremen" event, the last four foremen will not reveal themselves until Foreman Kreutzerova has been defeated.

Fixed a bug that could cause Tarleov to fail to begin working during his event.

Fixed a bug that could cause an Elite Dredge Rifleman to overzealously announce the presence of intruders.

Fixed health bar and marker display issues during the final confrontation with General Zadorojny.

Fixed an incorrect marker on the General Molradovich encounter.

Citadel of Flame

Gaheron Baelfire no longer resets his health when the party wipes during the finale battle in story mode, preventing a desync between his health and attack pattern.

Collision has been removed from a number of flame turrets to prevent players from being stuck inside them.

Honor of the Waves

Fixed a setting that caused Honor's Voice to move erratically during combat.

Fixed a bug that caused Kulag the Fallen's Ice Storm attack to not drop ice crystals if the target was out of Kulag's line of sight.

Lowered the level of some enemies that exceeded level 80 in explorable mode.

Fixed an incorrect marker on the Champion Icebrood Goliath encounter.

Fixed an incorrect marker on the Kodan's Bane encounter.

Crucible of Eternity

Fixed an issue that allowed players to enter the Crucible of Eternity dungeon from Mount Maelstrom even while the dungeon was contested.

Fixed an issue with the front door and teleporter exits that allowed them to be used before the dungeon was completed, allowing players to escape to Mount Maelstrom before receiving rewards.

The Ruined City of Arah

Added poison aura to Risen Defilers that were missing it.

Added a teleport mote that will let players join their party if they fell behind before Alphard, Serpent of the Waves was engaged.

Adjusted Simin, High Priestess of Dwayna’s heal skill to start its recharge when her heal effect ends instead of potentially being able to immediately restart a healing phase.

Luna Montenero pronouns: they/she sexuality: lesbian age (in the year of 1336): 30 preferences: Luna needs someone who values their intelligence, they want a person that knows to to speak up, that isn't a doormat, and isn't afraid to go against the grain. somebody that shares her interets in music would also be nice. about her: Luna grew up with her cousin Ambrose, who also happened to be her best and only friend. When she was 16, their mother took them away from the Wolf family and began raising her as a priest of Lyssa. After years of abuse within the church of Lyssa, she escaped with a bang, quite literally, and became the assistant of a mists researcher. Though they enjoy their job very much, things have gotten... lonely, lately.

Vesta Blazestrike pronouns: she/her sexuality: bisexual age: 37 preferences: she won't admit this, but she needs someone who's gentle, patient and calm. she needs time, and trust. about her: Vesta is violent, because she's never known how else to respond to unjustice. her sire was a smoke shaman, and she inherited some of his powers. among flame, she was hated for being a woman, and when she fled and joined the blood legion, she was hated for being flame. she was set up to be killed by her warband when they were sent on a mission, but Vesta ended up being the only one left alive. She's always been treated like dirt, for her magic, her tendency to fall mute whenever she is angry or overwhelmed, and now the fact that she's killed her own warband. if only there was 1 person to treat her right...

Darryean "Rye" pronouns: they/he sexuality: queer age: 9 preferences: Someone with an interest in fishing, and herding dolyaks, and herding skimmers, and herding raptors, or fishing... someone to see past his early year problems. about him: Rye was born shortly after Mordremoth woke, and was vulnerable to his call. they began turning into a mordrem but snapped out of it at last. When he was shunned by other sylvari that had watched his slow and rather short lived transformation, he decided to move to Elona instead and just. start fishin. start cowboying. nowadays he's travelling with their two (only) friends Rhea and Junko, and he is tasked to be their bands manager and only fan.

Brum Flausch pronouns: he/him sexuality: pansexual age: 40 preferences: Brum is t4t, but otherwise he has no preferences about him: Brum is just kind of a guy. He's a gladium after his warband kicked him out for being besties with a human, and then that human betrayed him, and now he's just kind of. chilling. alone. he does have a friend, Lysania, and she gave him the name "Flausch" after he split off from his warband. He's very kind, and also very big and strong :]

Lucien The Lost pronouns: he/him sexuality: i don't think he knows this age: he also doesn't know this preferences: I also don't think he has any about him: Lucien came crawling out of a cave one day and wandered into a camp of Dwayna's priests that swiftly took him in when he started blabbering about being a priest and having come back to serve his deity- except that he couldn't remember who exactly he was serving. after a couple of years of being kinda useless though, he started working for a particularly grumpy inquest asura. Lucien still doesn't know anything about his past, or what god has reawakened him, or if that god is ever going to come back, or when was the last time he lived, or why he has the quiet urge in the back of his head that tells him to destroy. hes fine tho dw

Lorelei Celestia pronouns: she/her sexuality: lesbian age: 28 preferences: every woman ever <;3 about her: Lorelei grew up in Lion's Arch. She was trained in an undergroud fight club when she was a teen, though that one shut down when a child literally exploded and opened a demonic portal in the process problems came up. Nowadays she's a roller beetle racer and general bad-guy-smasher, together with her asuran brother Vinzz, and her new wet hamster Ambrose.

Kang Ryumi pronouns: she/her sexuality: bisexual age: around 18 or 19, probably? preferences: someone that's free and rebellious, someone that shares her passion for music, someone that doesn't have a problem with presenting themselves to the world about her: Ryumi awoke somewhere in cantha, and stumbled into a little fishing village where she was taken in by two siblings that, just like her, were kind of outcasts. She had always loved music, and slowly worked herself up to become canthas biggest pop idol. she had planned to tour through all of tyria, until her label dropped her. now she's on her own, working on becoming properly independent.

Léandra "Léa" Rose Grey pronouns: he/she/they sexuality: bisexual age: 32 preferences: man. just anyone at this point. about them: Lèa's had a- complicated life. A bit too much to get into now. But I'll let you know that love has never ended well for Léa, having a onesided crush for years on the most pathetic man in Divinity's Reach, then being dumped by the literal commander, then having a onesided crush on his best friend. Maybe they've kinda given up by now. She's a contract killer nowadays, and quite lonely. They haven't seen their friends/ex guild members in a long time, and the only person he's been around in the past, what, four years, was her mentor. And that mentor isn't the best company, to be honest.

Prima Glittergore pronouns: she/her sexuality: asexual lesbian age: 29 preferences: strong, tall, sexy. about her: Prima technically was a head pact engineer, except that people didn't really listen to her as much as they should. Her work was often seen as over the top and not as practical- and to be clear, her inventions ARE very practical, but they're ALSO very stylish, and it's not her fault you're scared by a little bit of glitter. She's an incredible engineer with a love for pink, ribbons, rainbows and blood.

Wrennih "Wren" pronouns: he/him sexuality: lesbian age: 32 preferences: Wren would probbaly prefer to be with other asura, but aside from that he doesn't care a lot. about him: Wren used to be Inquest, but he doesn't talk about that a lot- they just happened to be the only one's to fund his fascination with time and space. he left after breaking up with his then girlfriend and decided to redeem himself by joining the pact during the fight against mordremoth. he still feels the need to help tyria in any way he can, though he does kind of miss the chances he had with the inquest and the research he was able to do there.

Song Byungjoon pronouns: he/him sexuality: bisexual age: 27 preferences: EVERYONE!!!! about him: Byungjoon is an outlaw, a gambler, a flirt, and most importantly: a large dumbass. He gets himself into trouble with every breath he takes. he's been travelling around the jade sea for a long while, and somehow, slowly, absorbed a suspicious amount of draconic energy. during his travels, he also met the one person that is willing to save his ass everytime he gets himself jailed again:

Nagisa Shadowshot pronouns: they/them sexuality: asexual lesbian age: 33 preferences: someone a little calmer and more responsible, to balance out their mess of a brother, but also someone thats willing to take the first step and apporach them about them: Formerly a shrine maiden near the harvest tample, Nagisa now travels cantha and beyond with Byungjoon. theyre swift, smart and deadly. Shadows surround them, certainly more than their own one. Thyr're hesitant to talk to new people and prefer to keep to themselves.

Cynorion "Cyno" pronouns: he/him sexuality: bisexual age: 30 preferences: someone that can ground him, that he can relax around. someone that is able to rest, someone that isn't chasing a big goal about him: Cyno is a Secondborn and has taken on many different roles in his life. he's been a mender, a guide to the newly awakened, has tried to be a healer, a warden- in the end, nothing he does ever feels right. he feels like he doesnt belong, doesnt have a purpose, the grove isnt his home, but neither is any other place in tyria. he really just wishes he could sit down with his animal companions and play his lute forever, somewhere in nowhere.

Bo pronouns: she/her sexuality: pansexual age: 23 preferences: someone who is willing to give her a lot of attention about her: Bo, or as she prefers to be called, Musical Genius Bo, is tyrias BEST music producer ever and ever, for real, like really. her tunes are so good and great and by the alchemy shes so fucking good at music. she can just feel it. she can feel the vibes and vibrations in the air and all. truth is, Bo's music is absolute dogshit, but shes a girl with a dream and one day she will produce even for people like Ryumi or something. shes freespirited and positive, and probably the definition of the word "girlypop".

Liang Haoyu pronouns: he/him sexuality: gay age: "25" preferences: a cultured person that appreciates good music and fashion and art, and maaaybe someone who doesnt mind blood and murder and being tenderly bitten about him: Haoyu is a diva, he's dramatic, he's artistic, he's an instrument maker and quite the performer. he has mastered nearly every instrument there is and once was, probably because he's had a lot of time on his hands to do so, having been "alive" since long before the jade winds destroyed his home. he's seen his friends and lovers come and go, come and go, come and go, and he's gotten used to it, but that doesnt mean that if he makes a connection, it's any less meaningful to him.
