The Thirty-eighth Spirit is Earl Halphas, or Malthous (or Malthas). He appears in the form of a stock-dove. He speaks with a hoarse voice. He helps to build up towers, and to furnish them with ammunition and Weapons, and to send men-of-war to places appointed. Evoke Halphas to gather your allies and draw friends. Seek Halphas’ wisdom in social situations where group mechanics are at play. Wear the sigil of Halphas to be well received and to command respect by those around you. Halphas is a good spirit for supervisors and managers to work with to gain wisdom on how to lead. Halphas may be then invoked into the magician, as a part of recalling the spirit as an atavism. This will strengthen the mental aspect of the individual who seeks to create a solid essence of self which may not be attacked by spiritual means. He rules over 26 legions of spirits.

Day 23 - Halphas

The Lesser Key of Solomon is a common source for demons throughout the SMT series, and for good reason- our favorite Goetic grimoire remains as the biggest still remaining demonic compendium out there, having 72 Marquis of hell to summon to assist in one's daily life. The demons of the Ars Goetia are varied and strange, but one sticks out as a personal favorite of mine- the regal Stock Dove, Halphas.

Listed as the 38th demon within the Ars Goetia, Halphas, also known as Malthus, is known as a "Great Earl," referred to as follows.

"The Thirty-eighth Spirit is Halphas, or Malthus (or Malthas). He is a Great Earl, and appeareth in the form of a Stock-Dove."

While, as with many goetic demons, the description of Halphas is vague, his reign seems to paint a picture of him being well versed in battle and blades, as his domain resides over the stocking of weaponry and sending people out to battle, almost like a tactician. He can also apparently build up towers, likely alluding to an ability to erect massive buildings from the ground in only an instant, owing to his immense demonic power- as a duke of hell, after all, his strength is nigh-unmatched. With a rule over 26 legions of spirits strong, the demonic warlord this bird turns out to be stands in quite interesting contrast to the typical representation of peace that a dove represents.

Design wise, the feathered cap and ruffled frills around the neck paint the image of this bird being some sort of great rich royalty, something supported by its reign as a Great Earl, and the gold blade he wields also gives way to the idea that this bird is a marquis of warfare. Overall a fantastic design filled with unique symbolism, and a personal favorite of mine.

Goetia - Earls, Counts, and Knight

Goetia – Earls, Counts, and Knight Happy Samhain and Halloween 2023! Concluding my rough notes on the Goetia before getting into the first draft of my book, we will discuss the Earls and Counts,  beings holding two ranks at once, and the one knight of Hell, Furcas. The Earls and Counts are governed by the planet Mars, The Element of Fire, and the South The Knight is governed by Saturn.  In this case, Furcas is also governed by Fire and the South.

The Earls and Counts can be called upon at any time but prefer solitude and quiet places.    The Knight Furcas prefers Sunrise to Sunset. While normally associated with Water, The Firey Earls and Counts live Silver and Copper!  The Knight enjoys Lead.

Earls and Counts enjoy stones of  Bloodstone, Garnet, Red Tourmaline The Knight enjoys Apache Tear, Coal, Jet, Onyx Herbs and Spices the Earls and Counts enjoy include Allspice, Garlic, Ginger, Pepper, Peppermint, and Wormwood.   The Knight Enjoys Elm, Hemp, Ivy, Patchouli, Wolf’s Bane The Earls and Counts are 17th Botis – Governed by Earth and the North 21st Marax – Governed by Air and the East 25th Glasya-Labolas – Governed by Fire and the South 27th Ronove – Governed by Fire and the South 34th Furfur – Governed by Water and the West 38th Halphas – Governed by Fire and the South 40th Raum – Governed by Earth and the North 45th Vine – Governed by Air and the East 46th Bifrons – Governed by Water and the West 72nd Andromalius – Governed by Water and the West The Knight 50th Furcas – Governed by Fire and the South

“So?” the Countess hissed out, still not moving an inch; like a statue of marble before them that could miraculously talk and nothing more.

“Where is she? Where the Hell President Amy gone, pray tell?”

“Her.. her highest legionnaires, her guards, they.. they report she went.. above, your grace. To--”

“SHE WENT TO EARTH?! WHY THE HELL WOULD A PRESIDENT EVEN THINK OF DOING SUCH A THING?!”

The Countess roared, almost standing from her perch, her glossy grey and violet plumage fluffing up in her outrage.

“W-W-We have no clue, your grace!! We tried questioning them further but th-they.. They didn’t know either!!”

“THAT... THAT... THAT LITTLE... IDIOT!!!!”

As her servants flinched away and trembled where they stood, the Countess seethed and snarled, tiny fangs bared.

She couldn’t possibly imagine why ANY President of Hell would dare bother to go above among the mortals when they, like all the high ranks among devils, didn’t need to take contracts nor hunt out prey!

Not unless.. they.. wanted to go of their own volition for some ridiculous reason!!!

And the very idea of “Madam President Amy”, who preened and prattled about her position; how she had worked so hard to earn it--

“Unlike you, little “Dove Princess”,” She’d cooed to the Countess, “who merely was raised knowing you’d get that rank among Earls and other Countess’s eventually~ Being so well off-- Related to none other than one of Hell’s greatest Matriarchs of all time--”

“GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!!!”

She’d screamed then at Amy, and now at her own servants.

And when they’d all been long gone..

The Countess-- Helen or Halphas as she was so known to so many humans thanks to their blasted curiosity and research --collapsed.

She covered her face with trembling claws, growling and sobbing.

Why...

How...

How did things come to be how they were...

Why was she, such a high ranking demon, so.. so miserable??

While her old.. beloved rival from youth.. 

Was thriving somehow? Even in her lowly position??

“What.. or who... could have taken you.. away from me... little fire?” She whispered uncertainly to the air.

And not even her loyal servants were there now to answer her.

Cu Alter in America for the demon pillar thing

“You know Nightingale,” Gudako said. “When you said ‘I recommend suicide’ I didn’t think he’d actually do it.”

Rama, Mash, Nightingale and Gudako stared as Cu Alter bled from his chest. The Mad King Cu Chulainn had succumbed to his wounds, defeated by the nurse’s ability to identify and immediately destroy his body’s pressure points. Unwilling to yield even as the life drained from his eyes, he impaled himself with Gae Bolg and dripped the contents of the grail into the opening.

“I wish you luck.” Cu Alter whispered before his head lolled to one side.

The four waited.

Nothing.

“Stay behind me Senpai.” Mash whispered.

Still nothing.

Nothing but dead air and an even deader Cu Chulainn.

“Well,” Gudako said. “That was pretty anticlimactic. Let’s go get the grail before-OH MY GOD!”

From the hole in Cu Alter’s chest arose the bloody head and neck of a giant stork, it’s crimson eye gazing slowly over the party.

“Steel yourselves,” Rama said.

The stork opened its beak.What came out was a voice both high pitched and low

“Behold an Earl of Hell, Malthus, known as Halphas. Who here has summoned me, that they wish to make use of my great armory? Step forward, that I may smite them where they-GAACKckckcc”

Nightingale struggled with the stork’s great strength before the beast fell limp at her arms, its neck broken.

“Parasites must be dealt with quickly before they reproduce. How unsanitary of the king to have such a large one in him.”

Halphas is a demon described as a stock dove with a hoarse voice, though the Dictionnaire Infernal describes him as a stork. He is an Earl of Hell who commands twenty-six legions.

Halphas provides weapons and machines for war. He can also send men into battle.
