Ladies and gents, my first Billy Batson-centric fic! It’s called: The Batson Family Soap Opera: Ft. The Justice League
Here’s a snippet of the first chapter, already released on AO3 under the name SunShade878
In Study Room #1, Billy propped himself up on a chair and opened his laptop. The screen lit up the room, showing a half-finished Whiz Radio broadcast script. On another tab, Billy pulled up a bullet point list of topics to cover, and got to work.
He took bites out of the sandwich he got from the cafeteria as he worked. Looking from tab to tab, Billy paraphrased some of his talking points and left slots open throughout the script for a few brief questions.
He tapped a nail against the table when he paused after a commercial break slot and glanced at the time.
“Five minutes ‘til monitor duty,” he muttered. “Better close off for now.”
Not to say Billy was satisfied with his work, but he was proud of his clean punctuality record from his time with the League. It also translated to his reporter work, so that was a nice bonus. Now that he thought about it, Morris told him he could give Billy a small bonus if he turned everything in today…
Nope! He shook his head. Monitor duty now, Whiz work later.
Billy quickly packed his things and slotted his laptop in a cubby before making his way toward the monitor station. He checked the time on his watch, sighing in relief when he saw he was two minutes from the beginning of his two hour shift.
Okay, good.
He quickened his pace toward the familiar room, dutifully ignoring the concerned and curious looks on several familiar faces.
I swear, you’d think I was catatonic with the way these people look at me.
The monitor room had a large, imposing window that showed the expanse of space. It was something Billy could never get over, no matter how long he stared at it. Multiple screens were lit, showing various cities with superheroes of their own, helping children out of burning buildings and stopping robberies in progress.
A transparent hologram of Earth spun around slowly in the middle of the room. Graph lines went over and across each section of land and sea. Several small, red dots blinked green, and Billy smiled in satisfaction that they were doing good. He was doing good.
“Hey, Little B!”
Billy rolled his eyes. “Hey, Hal.”
Billy doesn’t have to turn around to see the Green Lantern’s cheeky grin as he sauntered into the room, power ring glowing emerald. “Ya seem tense, little man.” The grin faltered, revealing what Billy knew to be truer than the smile. “You okay?”
Now, you remember what Billy said about loving how protective the League was, right? And the thing is, he didn’t lie. He didn’t blame them for it, and he understood the need to protect people younger than you. Hell, he was well known enough in Fawcett for the younger street kids to know him by name. For them to know he knew all the best hiding spots and hoarding spots around the Cobbler District.
But sometimes it could just be so. Damn. Annoying.
“Oh, it’s just some last minute revisions for my broadcast tomorrow. Nothing major.”
“You remembered to eat, yeah?
Don’t roll your eyes, he’s not being condescending. “Took a sandwich from the canteen.”
“Cool, cool.”
Yeah, this was definitely one of those times where he felt coddled instead of protected. Now, maybe seven year old Billy, who’d just learned that he was now responsible for the wellbeing of an entire community and subcommunities of ethereal-infused life, would’ve loved the worry on Hal’s face.
Fourteen year old Billy, on the other hand, couldn’t help the queasy feeling in his stomach.
“Anyway, we should get started, huh?”
The whites of Hal’s domino mask widened. “Uh, yeah. Let’s.”
Billy mustered a small smile as he propped himself on one of the two chairs facing the screens. Hal flopped unceremoniously onto the other one, the smile on his face more prominent. Weird. Before, the smile seemed…dim, somehow.
Now, though, with the two of them looking through screens and chatting quietly as the hours ticked by, Hal’s nervousness and tenseness was chipped away, revealing the bumbling idiot Billy knew and cared for. The easy way with which they communicated was something Billy was thankful for. If anything, his identity reveal only strengthened their relationship.
It sort of felt like he was the reason for Hal’s better mood. But that was silly.
Right?

You should have known better, honestly. With the birth of your first child you should have at least waited until the man was out with his sister before you decided to put decorations up around the home.
“Y/n! What do you think you are doing.”
Suppressing the urge to roll your eyes you held up one of the stockings. “What does it look like I am doing, I’m hanging up the stockings.”
Ebenezer stepped close to you doing his best to hide his scowl as he placed his hand on your growing stomach. “The only thing you should be doing is resting, taking it easy. You shouldn’t be walking about straining yourself.”
You had thought he would have calmed down with this being his second child, yes the first birth was hard. You were in bed for days while your husband fussed over you. You hoped he would tone down his protectiveness but then he wouldn’t be your husband if he did, he wouldn’t have been the man you’ve fallen in love with “I’ll be fine Ebenezer and I promise I will take it easy.”
Tensing for a moment he then hugged you, doing his best not to hug you tightly. Burying his face in your neck he let his fingers run down your back. “I’m sorry I’m like this….I just can not fathom the thought of losing you. When Fan was born, there was just so much blood.”
Sighing you stepped back cupping his cheeks, your thumb sliding down his cheek. “You have nothing to apologize for love, it’s cute seeing you protective even if you won’t let me do simple tasks like hanging a sock.”
Adverting his gaze, he grasped your hand gently feeling a bit embarrassed now. “Well I do feel a bit foolish now.” He muttered about to step back only for you to grab his hand.
“How about we do this together.”
Relaxing his shoulders, Scrooge did wish his sister didn’t take Fran with her. It would have been a nice family moment but he would have to figure something to do with his three year old besides it’s not like you two weren’t alone. Rubbing your belly he then gave you a gentle kiss, squeezing your hand.
Smiling he glanced at the fire place then guided your hand to the mantle hooking the stocking, pulling you close Ebenezer kissed the side of your head. “It’s going to be a wonderful Christmas.”
“They will be even better years to come”

I know it’s only October but I have fallen so deep into my Scrooge (2022) obsession! I drew this last year in the week between Christmas and new year following on from Scrooge’s comment “I’m glad Isabel found the happiness she deserved. Perhaps… perhaps it’s not too late for me to find my own!” So here’s Scrooge… finding his happiness, all be it later in life 😏 and yes, she’s modelled on me.

9th October 1900 saw the birth in Edinburgh of Alastair Sim, the actor best known for his character and comedy roles.
He was the youngest of Alexander and Isabella Sim's four children. His father was a tailor who owned his own shop on Lothian Road, it is still a shop selling running gear nowadays. To use a suitable phrase for his father, I like the jib of the man, Alexander was one of a group of professional people in Edinburgh who noted the plight of wounded Veterans returning from the front who had little or no prospects of suitable accommodation or employment ahead of them. They founded the Scottish Veterans Garden City Association during the 1st World War and, under the chairmanship of Lord Salvesen, paid for the construction of houses for the use of returning servicemen.
Alexander Sim was offered, but refused, a knighthood.
For a time, the family lived above the shop, but as Alastair entered school, the business picked up enough that they were able to move to a house in Craigleith. Young Alistair was educated at Bruntsfield Primary, James Gillespie's High School and George Heriot's School. He worked for his father then another Edinburgh tailor but showed little aptitude and decided to enter Edinburgh University, studying analytical chemistry, but his further education was cut short when he was called up to the army. After the war he returned home and announced to his parents he was going to take up acting, this wnet down like a lead balloon and there was a falling out, Alistair left the family home and spent a year in the Scottish Highlands with a group of jobbing workers.
On returning to Edinburgh Sim took post in the burgh assessor's office. In his spare time, he entered poetry reading classes, winning the gold medal for verse speaking at the Edinburgh Music Festival. This led to him taking a job as a Fulton lecturer in elocution at New College, part of the University of Edinburgh.
Alastair Sim began working as a stage actor in 1930, taking on minor roles. His deep talent was soon discovered, and he was cast as Othello that same year. In 1932, he met and married Naomi Plaskill, his muse and wife for life. The couple had one child, a daughter named Merlith. It wasn't long before Sim moved to films in supporting roles. One of his more memorable characters was that of Detective Sergeant Bingham in the film series Inspector Hornleigh. His on-screen presence was so dominant that he has often been credited with "stealing the scene" from the film's star actors.
Throughout the 1940s, Sim was cast in several lead roles; he starred in the thriller Green for Danger, the comedy The Happiest Days of Your Life and Alfred Hitchcock's Stage Fright, among other major films. One of Sim's better-known portrayals was that of Captain Hook in the production of Peter Pan, a role he reprised six times during his career. In a national cinema poll in 1950, Sim was voted the most popular film actor in Britain.
I think quite a few of us will remember Alastair Sim in a slightly different role to those I have already pointed out, growing up before we had all the TV channels we have now and watching the old black & white films and the classic Belles of St Trinians where he played headmistress Millicent Fritton.
Looking through his other roles, I spotted he played the notorious Dr Knox, not once-but twice. For those who don't know, the doctor of note was a professor of Anatomy at Edinburgh University, he paid Messrs Burke & Hare for fresh cadavers to demonstrate the human anatomy at the University.
I mentioned Alistair's father refusing a knighthood, and it pleases me to tell you he too refused the offer of becoming Sir Alistair Sim in the early 70's.
He died of cancer in August 1976, insisting that his body be used for medical research - and that there should be no memorial service for him. His widow lived until 1999; she published a memoir, Dance and Skylark: Fifty Years with Alastair Sim in 1987. There is a plaque, commemorating Sim's birth, outside the Filmhouse Cinema in Lothian Road, Edinburgh, only a short distance from where he was born above his father's shop.

I adore living in this era because I can simping over Scrooge shamelessly despite him being an old capitalist man who exploits people. Outside here I might have cheered for a union to give his office a fiery makeover. But well that's just me and my cognitive dissonance loving the fact that internet exist lol
