The Easy Life in Kamusari

Book review:

Somewhat predictable but still an immensly charming forestchange bildungsdroman.

Nonplussed by mediocre results, fresh high school graduate and Yokohama city-boy, Yuki Hirano is unperturbed by his lack of career prospects. The same cannot be said for his parents and a teacher who saw this coming a mile off. Somehow, they have conspired to register Yuki into a forestry trainee program in a far-off, barely accessible village. It would be assumed that Yuki might have a dissenting say but a little blackmail and household severance later and he has been packed off on his way. This happens within the first 5 pages.

This short novel is written in first person from the perspective of Yuki. Typing away his boredom into a primitive offline PC, he recounts his adventures after having worked and survived a year in his new home. Besides the exponential learning curve of skilled manual labour, each moment is filled with new experiences from the bucolic, near alien traditions and customs observed by the village to the different aspects of natural scenery that abounds. 

Just when the pattern of work and festivals might be starting to wear thin comes the climactic event. Every 48 years the village observes a special ceremony and chooses a 1000 year old tree to fell. Normally a prohibited action but one that the village has been granted dispensation for. Not that cutting the tree down after hiking up a mountainside in the dark and cold is the main difficulty. There is the dubious reassurance that only 8 people have died in the event's recorded history.

This story has been adapted into the magnificently titled WOOD JOB! It featured in the 2014 Japanese Film Festival and the odd special screening at our centre. The original novel differs from the theatrical film but the underlying theme and unique setting make the two versions unmistakably the same story. Besides being packed with scenery candy, the fact the film exists means that the climax does too and the nigh unfilmable ending stunt is given a remarkable realisation. Those who enjoyed The Easy Life in Kamusari but felt it could do with fleshing out are apparently numerous enough as there is now a sequel Kamusari Tales Told at Night still narrated by the fish out of water Yuki.

If you want to see how harmful this “digital nomadic culture” is, you just need to look at what they’ve done to Bali, Indonesia. They have completely displaced local residents and pushed them out of their communities because locals can no longer afford to keep up with the COL. There's so many layers to unpack here. 'Tourism' in the Caribbean, for instance, is something I think about as well whenever I see people acting like this -these industries, which are highly exploitative towards the people and their communities and environments is one element -but the 'travelling to paradise' market itself is based in neo/colonialist frameworks and current mentalities and that itself is something that needs to be addressed much more. Especially with what is happening in Jamaica where so many Jamaicans are being pushed out of their own land when a tourist 'resort' wants to build or 'expand' because these 'ideal' locations are near the sea, where Jamaican people have been/are fishing for their own livelihoods and survival. I posted a video about this, but for those who haven't looked into these issues -I implore you to look into this.

I also think of Hawai'i, which has had many devastating impacts to their islands this past year -irreparable damages to both Native Hawaiians and the environment (and ongoing issues, such as the water being contaminated/and scarce there and yet tourists are prioritized for access to clean water sources) -and STILL people remained and traveled there during the Maui fires, and just overall despite countless pleas for them not to go they still do.

Among many the 'desirable destinations' marketed specifically to Europeans/Westerners as 'a getaway to' where they can detach from their busy lives, or to live permanently because it's 'too expensive' where they live -I sincerely wish they would come back down to earth and realize their imperialistic mentalities -especially when going to countries whose economies they perceived as 'poorer,' without looking critically at the country's infrastructure and history is just willful ignorance at best.

Paris-based research group interstellar labs is working to bring a Mars-ready village to North America’s Mojave desert – one of the driest places on the continent – to further research on how humans could live on other planets, while simultaneously learning how to create more sustainable communities on Earth.

The design employs space technologies called EBIOS (experimental bio-regenerative stations), the first closed-loop controlled environment habitats on Earth of their kind.
