I saw someone talking about Yellow being the colour they put Shannon (Chris' mom) in a lot and the fact that Buck didn't start wearing yellow till after she died.
The 911 costume designer said that they are very deliberate with their clothes and the colours and that they have meaning....
So I noticed that there are 2 very important times we see Buck in yellow (and it's the same shade)
Tumblr media
During the will scene...
Tumblr media
And in 7x01 when he's talking to Chris....
(the images are low quality so it looks brown but it's more of a deep yellow)
So both of these are significant scenes for the co-parenting arc (which we already knew) but the thing is both times Buck is wearing yellow in a scene something major shifts in terms of his relationship to Christopher and Eddie.
In the will scene, he moved up from just some guy who spends time with Chris and Eddie, and he's told he has legal claim to Chris should something happen. He's literally legally given a spot as part of Christopher's (and Eddie's) family.
In the scene in 7.01 he's having a talk with Chris and it gets deep. So Buck is now seen actively parenting this teen. He's taking a step up from 'fun uncle' and he's being called in to deal with actual problems in their family. Again he's wearing yellow. So does this mean he's getting another promotion this season.... maybe to Dad?🙈🙈
Idk though maybe I'm just delulu 🤔🧐🤡
Also someone pointed out that Buck, Eddie and Shannon all sat in the same spot on Chris' bed....
At this point I'm unwell🤡🤡

Trailer park Steve AU part 14
part 1 | part 13 | ao3
fuckin' finally some FLUFF
Dinner is awkward.
It’s awkward, Steve thinks as he spears a Brussels sprout with more force than strictly necessary, because Dustin promised that it was just going to be the three of them tonight, and now he’s sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with his leather-clad metalhead neighbor.
It went like this: Steve showed up at the Henderson’s front door with a pie plate and a two-liter of Grapico under his arm, looking like a dork on picture day in his best jeans and a nice polo with his hair actually combed for once, and he lifted his hand to knock only to be greeted by Eddie throwing the door open and hollering, “Be right back, Henderson! Gotta grab— oh, shit.”
And then, more eloquently, “Uh…”
Uh. Like Steve was the one unexpectedly crashing the party.
Steve stabs another sprout.
They’ve been bumbling through stilted small talk about work and school and weekend plans for what feels like a painfully long time, and Eddie has his elbows on the table — didn’t even bother to take his jacket off because he was apparently raised in a barn — and it’s basically dinner with Barb’s parents all over again.
This is finger-lickin’ good.
God. Get him out of here.
“Okay,” Dustin cuts through the stalled-out silence in the room. He jabs an accusatory fork into the air, pointing between the two of them and narrowing his eyes. “You two are being weird.”
Eddie startles dumbly, and Steve just says, “Hmm?”
“You.” He aims the fork at Steve. “Are being.” It moves to Eddie; back to Steve. “Weird. What’s going on? I thought you two were getting along now.”
Steve dabs his mouth with his napkin. Wow. Okay. So they’re doing this now.
Eddie either doesn’t get the memo or just decides to rip it up, because instead of being honest he throws on a theatrical smile and flings an arm around Steve’s shoulders, proclaiming, “Of course we are! C’monnn. Me and this guy?” He reaches up to give Steve a gentle noogie. Steve wonders if you can get a more lenient sentence if the guy you murdered really, really deserved it. “Thick as thieves.”
Claudia smiles fondly.
Dustin’s not buying it. “You’re so full of shit, you know that?”
“Dusty!” Claudia gasps. She gives him a stern look as she tops off her wine glass, then leans over to do the same for Steve and Eddie’s glasses, too. “Stevie, honey, don’t listen to him,” she soothes. “I think it’s sweet. It’s good to see you with some boyfriends your own age.”
Dustin chokes at her word choice, and Steve blushes to his ears.
Eddie’s arm tightens around his shoulders. “Yeah, Stevie,” he smirks, leaning in a little closer. “We’re great boyfriends, aren’t we?”
“Oh, yeah,” Dustin joins in, “best boyfriends I’ve ever seen.”
Surely murder’s just murder, right? Like, from a sentencing perspective? Does it matter how many people you off, or do you just get thirty-to-life regardless?
“Steve, tell mom more about your boyfriend.”
Steve chugs his glass of wine.
The conversation turns to less embarrassing topics after that, the words flowing more easily now that everyone’s warmed up with wine and making fun of Steve. Claudia asks what everyone’s doing for Halloween, and Dustin tells her that Eddie and Steve are taking the boys trick-or-treating in the neighborhood with the good candy bars (which was news to Steve, goddammit), and that leads to a discussion of costume plans.
Dustin and Mike are going as a pair again, Marty and Doc from Back to the Future. Lucas is doing his own thing, but he's "totally delusional if he thinks a costume is gonna win Max back." Steve doesn’t really have a costume this year, so he’ll probably just pull some sweats out of the closet, throw a whistle around his neck and go as a basketball coach, and Eddie, surprisingly, has the lowest effort costume of them all.
“Oh, I’m going as a vampire,” he says when Claudia asks. He reaches into his pocket, pulls out some cheap plastic teeth and pops them into his mouth. “Ta-daaa.”
Steve wrinkles his nose. “You just carry those around?”
“Isn’t it awesome?” Dustin asks.
“Not really, no. It’s not.”
“But S’theeeve,” Eddie lisps around the fangs. The wine’s made him weirder, playful and too-friendly and berry pink in the cheeks. He holds his sleeve in front of his face like a vampire hiding behind a cape and drawls, “I vant to s’thuck your bloood.”
Steve vants to jump out the window. “I’m gonna go serve the pie.”

an angel's kiss in spring |mafia!eddie munson x reader|
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
prompt: the mafia!eddie fluff you all wanted is here.
contains: fluff lol. just pure fluff. some mafia themes but really just super sweet fluff.
"Eddie!"
He shouldn't have jumped the way he did, startled and gripping the glock on his hip, fingers wrapping around the piece. Lucifer growled at the jostled movement of his master, ears perking and turning towards you.
It wasn't a distressed call by any means, more excited than anything, but Eddie still found himself on edge. Far too consumed in his own anxieties and fears, years of stacked skeletons in his closet did that to him. He knew it was silly to look for threats here. It was a farmer's market in the shit hole middle of nowhere, a thirty minute haul out to the boonies. He didn't conduct business here; hell, he was convinced that the only business done out here was this farmer's market. Yet, he still was ready. Guard up and on alert so at any moment, he was ready; he had to be.
You hadn't seemed to notice his distress, Hades' leash in your hand while you stepped closer to the small vendor. Eddie pushed his band tee back down, covering the holster, eyes scanning the area. His curls were frizzing with every passing second in the muggy, hot air of the summer. He felt out of place, out in jeans and Reeboks instead of his usual work attire.
"What'd ya find, baby?" Eddie pushed his sunglasses further up the bridge of your nose, free hand skating over your back gently.
"Look," You grinned, holding up the small plastic bag. "They're dog treats."
Diablo's ears perked at the use of his favorite word, sitting at attention with his brothers, eyes trained on you. Eddie clicked his tongue, a signal to relax. "That's nice."
"It's banana, peanut butter, and oats- and oh! These have pumpkin! Vecna loved the pumpkin bread I made-"
"-That you weren't supposed to give him." Eddie gave you a stern look that bore through the tinted lenses of his frames.
You blushed, thighs twitching at his tone. "Well, he loved it." You chirped, swiping a bag. "I'll get him these, and... oh, there's bacon ones? Oh, they will all love those. Look, honey, they're all home made. Isn't that so cute?" You gushed.
Eddie nodded at the older woman, who beamed at your compliments. "Very cool." Eddie gave a half smile, already reaching for his wallet in his back pocket.
"I got it." You pushed his hand away, reaching into your bag.
Eddie paused, blinking behind his glasses before scoffing. "C'mon," He rolled his eyes, passing a fifty towards the woman. "You lost your mind?"
You smirked, huffing at him with feigned annoyance. The woman cut her eyes up to you two, warm and kind. "You two are very sweet. Have you been together long?"
You grinned. "Almost two years." You hugged his waist tightly.
Eddie let himself melt into you. There was no need for the frigid exterior here. No one knew who he was, this woman certainly didn't or her hands would be trembling when she handed him the bag. "Keep the change." Eddie nodded towards her when she went to her little change box.
She blinked at him, mouth rounding in surprise to match her eyes. "Sir, that's-"
Eddie waved her off. "Have a great day." He smirked, taking the paper bag for you, his free hand still on your waist.
"That was very sweet." You smiled up at him. "Probably made her whole day."
Eddie blushed, lips pressing together to hold back his own smile. He beamed in your praise, wanted to drown himself in it. "'s nothing, really. Just thirty bucks."
"Yeah, but that's thirty bucks to her. Might mean something different than to you." You tilted your head at him.
He nodded easily. "Hope it does. She made you happy. She deserved it."
It was your turn to blush, hiding your face gently in his chest, walking through the gravelly dirt. Eddie let you pile up your bag with fresh vegetables, fruits, jams. You liked coming here. You insisted "fresh produce" was better than the stuff at the store, and he'd believe you. Of course, he would. He'd believe anything you told him.
"You're sweet, you know that?" Your tone is love drunk, dazed and warm, blinking up at him. The sun illuminating his curls, the hints of those walnut flecks through his hair shining with sunshine.
Eddie grinned, dimples deep in his own cheeks, pulling you closer to his side. "Yeah? Don't tell anyone." He muttered, pressing his lips to the top of your head. "Don't blow my cover. Got a reputation to uphold."
You snorted, shaking you head lightly. "Think you've gone soft since you've been hanging around me, Munson."
"Sure." Eddie rolled his eyes. "Don't get too ahead of yourself, kitten. I can show you how mean I am if you keep teasing me." He growled lowly, the hand on your hip sliding down to the fatty flesh of your ass, giving it a firm squeeze that had your shrilling in giggles.
The dogs turned, glaring and snarling at Eddie at your distress sound. He clicked his teeth, louder this time, and they fell back into line. Normally, he'd be mad at their disobedience, but he couldn't blame them for looking out for you. Made him proud that they wanted to protect you. That they loved you.
"You've ruined them." Eddie shook his head at you, watching you scratch Diablo's head with a coo. "Spoiled them rotten."
"Whatever. They deserve it, don't you? Yes, you do my little precious baby boys! You deserve it!" You cooed at them in a high pitched voice that had them wagging their tails, jumping and panting to get closer to you.
Eddie opened the door, unclipping their leashes, whistling for them to pile in. You slid into the passenger seat, grinning back at the boys, panting and scrambling around in the back. "Put the windows down for them, please." You asked, setting your produce below your feet.
Eddie obliged, one hand putting the car in reverse while the windows lowered, hand pulling out of the spot expertly. His hand found your thigh easily, cupping it gently, lips curling at the way you flushed, wrapping around his arm and kissing his elbow sweetly.
You giggled, watching Diablo and Vecna in the window, wagging tongues out in the wind, ears blowing in the breeze. "Look at them, baby." You leaned your head against his, looking out the side mirror. "They're just the cutest."
Eddie smirked, looking over at you. "Not as cure as you, honey." He muttered, squeezing your thigh so you'd squeal. Like clockwork, you did.
You rolled your eyes, propping your chin on his veiny forearms to look at him. "That was cheesy." You sighed, kissing the hem of his shirt.
Eddie flushed, tingling under your kiss. He wanted to reach over, pull the car over and kiss you all sloppy and sweet, press you up against the seat and make out with you until his lips were numb. Until you were clawing at his back and whining in his ear. Normally, he would, but with the dogs, that would be a challenge.
So he grabbed your hand instead, bringing your knuckles to his lips, kissing each one with a gentle softness that had you blushing. "How about that?" Eddie muttered, winking at you. "That cheesy too?"
"A little." You giggled, tightening your hug around his bicep. "'s alright. I liked it. Like it when you get all cheesy and cliche-y on me. It's sweet."
Eddie snorted lightly, looking at Lucifer biting the air out side of the window. "Not many people would describe me as sweet."
You shrugged. "Not many people know you like I do." You said simply. "You're pretty sweet, Munson. The sweetest person I know."
Eddie didn't reply, his hand squeezing yours affectionately instead, but you saw the bob of his throat. You saw the way his jaw flexed, not angry but more emotional. You knew he wouldn't ever say it, couldn't say it, but it meant a lot to him that you saw him that was. Soft and sweet... kind even. For you? He would be.
How could he not?
When you smothered him in kisses and sweet words. When you loved him so unconditionally, without limits or consequences. He trusted you, loved you, would do anything for you.
It's why he drove an hour and a half out to the middle of no where for you. To a Farmer's Market when he could go to Melvald's and get most of this. You wanted to go here, it made you happy, so he took you. The smile on your face when you got something new and fun, like the treats for the dogs, oh, it made it all worth it.
Eddie loved when you'd get home, cutting up the fruit and mixing it in a large bowl, scooping out some for him. It reminded him of his mother, how she'd always bring him some when he was upset, her silent way of showing love and care for him.
He loved spending time with you, in the garden, throwing a slobbery tennis ball to the dogs that clambered over each other to get it and bring it back to you. You sat in the grass with him, snuggled into him even in the heat. He didn't mind. Just happy to be with you, feel normal and peaceful in these moments with you.

Found this in my drafts and had forgotten to post it soooo...
This art is based on a twitter thread drabble I wrote about Steve and his soft toy Bunny and growing up in difficult situations and loving people that are sick the best that you can.
It's also posted in full on AO3 if you wanna support me there ❤️
(CW: depression and neglect of a child) Steve’s mom suffered with poor mental health and Steve didn’t understand. Eddie does too, and maybe Steve understands better now.
When Steve was small, his parents’ door was open a crack most of the time, the sweet grown-up scents of perfume and cologne drifting out. Their bedroom was a treasure trove of wonders, their expansive closet full of clothes that swished and slipped over his little fingers, his mom’s dressing table cluttered with ornate glass bottles of perfume, sweet-smelling waxy lipstick, and delicate compacts of powders, her silver-backed beautiful hairbrush. Sometimes his mom even brushed his hair like hers, til it gleamed, shiny and soft.
When the bedroom door was closed, Steve knew to knock first, knew he should probably wait and ask for their time later.
Sometimes though, sometimes his mother would shut the bedroom door and she would not leave the room for days. His father would sleep on the couch, or make excuses and go away on “business”.
There would be no sweet smells of perfume, only dark and silence. His father told him that his mom was sick, to let her rest. Steve didn’t understand why she didn’t want to see him. When he was sick, he wanted cuddles and toast and hot drinks with honey and his Bunny with one ear loved almost all the way off.
Steve would sit outside her door with his Bunny and wait. He would wait and wait and eventually when he was lonely and tired he would knock quietly and creep into her room.
With the heavy damask curtains drawn, it drowned the room in blue shadows, the looming frame of the four poster and it’s mounds of blankets piled up. Steve felt like he was climbing a mountain to find his mom amongst them all.
“Are you sick? Do you want toast?”
He would offer her his Bunny, cuddle close. She did not smell like perfume, just something stale and forgotten.
“Mommy’s tired Stevie.”
Sometimes she wouldn’t speak at all, just touch his hair. Sometimes she would tell him to leave her.
“Go and play Stevie.”
Steve didn’t know how to explain with her there was nobody to play with and that his father had gone away somewhere and he was hoping she would make him macaroni.
Steve learnt to get to the high up pantry shelves for snacks until his father got home, or til his mom stopped feeling tired.
She seemed more than tired, but what did he know?
The older Steve got, the more often his mom was tired. He learnt not to ask anymore, just to lie down with her, to be patient, to be sweet.
He learnt to bring her food, even if she would not eat it, to make her tea and open the curtains up. He learnt to coax her from bed and to her vanity, so he could brush the dark tangle of her hair until it gleamed and fell like silk down her back. He ran her hot baths and always gave her his Bunny.
When his parents started to go away and not come home, Steve wondered who took care of her. If his father still left her alone.
She would sound far far away when he called her. “I’m tired Stevie, we’ll speak soon.” The dial tone felt heavy.
Steve gets tired too, but there is nobody who will come to check on him, so he cannot sleep through it.
Eddie is like his mother was, sometimes.
After the Upside Down, after Vecna, Eddie is dogged by the shadow of consequence. They won, yes, they won, but Eddie is scarred and scared and sometimes he is very tired.
Steve knows how to take care of Eddie when he’s tired.
He can come to Eddie in his quietness, in his tangled unwashed sheets and his dark bedroom and he can offer, piece by piece, the things he knows.
He can kiss Eddie’s clammy forehead, his tangled hair, curl up with him and pay no heed to the mortification of dirty sheets for a while. He can crack the blinds and bring him his painkillers and water and coffee. He can coax Eddie to a shower, washing the sleep and the sadness from his skin. He can change his sheets, trade them for clean soft cotton and comfort.
When Eddie is clean and so tired again, Steve can brush his long hair until it’s free from tangles and falls long and dark down his back.
Sometimes Eddie needs time to be tired, but Steve can care for him still, with quiet affection and patience.
Eddie may need time, sometimes, but he never entirely closes the door to shut Steve out.

The King, The Bat, and The Runaway Part 3 (Steddie X You)
Tumblr media
A/N: Not sure why this took me a billion years to complete but alas lol what's odd is I like writing for this three this way...maybe all the angst lol but it kills me to! I've said it before I hate (love) reading stories where couples have spent time apart for one reason another but pinning...ugh. Maybe it's cause I've experienced it with an ex and that hurt sucks lol
I do want to write like an alternate time line where she does go looking for them after like 5 years or something. Or even one where they do get on a plane and follow her to Europe to find her. Or both. Hey... I'm flexible lol
Warnings: Steddie relationship and all that implies (I regret nothing!), Smut for sure with angst and feels, they do have a conversation where they show off their scars to each other and talk about what happened within those 10 years, mentions of domestic abuse and shitty relationships (its brief), flashbacks involving Eddie first being in Hawkins so there are mentions of the bruises from his dad :(, um...I think that's it.
Word Count: 4559
You stare into the void of your closet, tuning out your boyfriend as he shouts at you from the bedroom.
“I don’t understand why you insist on avoiding this question every damn time! I get they are based on people you knew in high school but the way you write them… it feels like you were in love with them!”
Sighing you hang up your dress from that evening and come out in your pajamas.
“Let it go, Noah. It doesn’t matter. They are kids I used to know. End of story.”
“See, Y/N, it’s not ‘end of story’ because you’re still writing said story!”, he points at the manuscript on your desk. “Why won’t you tell me more?”
“Ugh. I’m done having this argument. I’m going to bed. You can either join me or go home.”
Noah exhales as he places his hands on his hips before sitting on the edge of you bed. “Y/N, baby. I love you so much. I just… You keep this locked up so tight. Should I be worried?”
You softly smile as you sit beside him and kiss his cheek. “Honey, you are the only man in the world for me.”
He smiles as he places a peck on your lips. “I better be. Okay, let me take a shower and then I’ll go to bed with you. Hey, you probably already know this but your favorite band released a new single today. You should listen to it. Tell me if it’s amazing.”
After he shuts the bathroom door, you immediately grab your headphones and search for Corroded Coffins new song. You leaned against your pillow, closing your eyes as Eddie’s voice filled your ears.
#################
You smiled tenderly in their direction, neither one of them making any real move towards you. After making a decision, you take one of Steve’s hands, bringing him to the bed and placing him next to Eddie. Your skirt falls to the floor as you kick it to the side before slowly unbuttoning your blouse and tossing it away as well.
“I’m, uh, I know I don’t exactly look the same but—”
“Don’t.”, Eddie cuts you off. “Don’t even finish that sentence. You’re still fucking gorgeous.”
“What happened here?” Steve’s fingers gently traced along a scar on your outer thigh.
“I’m an idiot.”, you laugh. “I went hiking on this remote island off the coast and tripped. They warned us about slick slopes but I’m me so… cut a big gash that bled everywhere.”
“What about this one?” Eddie points to a small but noticeable scratch on your arm.
“My literary agent and I were coming back from an event and someone hit our car. We were fine but some glass from the window cut me. Here to.” You lift his fingers to graze the much tinier scar on your shoulder. Steve’s eyes linger on a circular scar near your ribs. “Oh, you don’t want to hear about that one.”
“Hey. Yeah, I do.”, he gently tugs on you so your more in front of him. “It looks deep.”
“When I got home from traveling, I met this guy…We weren’t together very long but—”
“He hurt you.” Steve’s voice filled with anger.
You hung your head. “He didn’t mean to. We got into a fight and he meant to throw something behind me but hit me instead. After that, I uh, did what I do best….I ran.” When you finally found the courage to look at them again, they both seemed extremely upset. “See, I told you didn’t want to hear about this.”
“No, hey, no.” Eddie pulled you so you were back in front of him. “We do. We just… hate that you experienced that…especially alone.”
“Because we would have beat his ass.”
“That’s for damn sure.” You grin as they both laugh.
The metalhead brushes your hair away from your face before leaning back to lift off his shirt. Your grin stretches further along your face as the pads of your fingers trace all the new tattoos, hovering over the heart you noticed when you saw him play.
“I got that one after we signed with our first label. If I had known you were going to refer to me as a vampire, I would have gotten some like Dracula teeth or something.”, he chuckled.
“What did you say when he got it?”, you asked Steve.
“Pfft. I didn’t even know he got it until over a year later. Mr. Sex Appeal here took off his shirt at the first concert I was finally able to make and I won’t lie, it surprised me. I don’t hate it though. Better than this other bullshit.”
“Wow. Rude.”, Eddie teases. He turns his attention back to you and twists his body so you can see the scar on his back. “We were playing at one of those festivals and I was fucking wasted. I jumped into the crowd and those kids fucking dropped me; landed on some glass on the floor. I kept playing though.”
He lifts his hips as he pushed his pants and boxers to the floor. Steve grabs your hand, tugging you out of Eddie’s way and onto his lap. You leaned your head against his as you wrapped your arms around his neck.
You absorbed all the never-before-seen tattoos on his thighs and calves as he points to a scar on his right leg. “About 5 years ago I was dating this girl who was just off the walls. We got into a bad argument in our hotel and she went full Sid and Nancy literally throwing a fucking knife at me! Jeff drove me to the hospital and I needed like ten stitches.”
“How come I didn’t hear about this?”, Steve asked.
“Probably because our manager kept it out of the papers AND paid her off as long as she agreed to stay away from me.”
“And you didn’t tell me because…?”
“Sir, you’re a lawyer. I aint tellin’ you shit.” You giggled as Eddie laughed. “No, man. I was just a little embarrassed. Everyone warned me about her but… Plus you were doing so well with what’s her name at the time.”
“Ah, yes. What’s her name.” Steve grins sarcastically as he unbuttons his shirt and points to the long scar leading from the top of his belly button to just below his chest. “Yeah, things were going so well, I needed surgery to remove the ulcers she gave me.”
“Steve, oh my god.” You pushed him back as he balanced on his arms so you could get a better look.
“You told me you were getting your appendix removed, you asshole!”
“I told you that because you were on tour and I didn’t want you to cut that short to come stay with me in the hospital because I know you would have. It’s fine. The doctor said it was a routine type thing.”
“Did your mom or dad come?” You feel yourself start to panic slightly.
“Of course not. You know my family.” He chuckles but stops when he sees that look in your eyes. “Hey seriously. It wasn’t a big thing.”
“You were all alone in a hospital having surgery. I…I would have been there. I didn’t know. I…”
“Y/N, honey, it’s okay. I know you would have.”, he kisses your cheek. “That’s why I didn’t tell your parents either.” Steve sighs as he turns to Eddie. “I told Michelle—”
“I’m still calling her what’s her name.”
“AND she said I was being overdramatic. When I came back home, she was gone, thank God. That relationship was the worst. She was basically a 5’4 version of my father. I didn’t realize it till after I got sick.”
He taps your back with his fingers and you take the hint, sliding over to sit on Eddie’s lap as he slides off his slacks and underwear. “Do I have any on my legs?”, he mumbles as he looks. “Oh! That case you guys mentioned last night? I didn’t just add money to the settlement but a couple of weekends I went over there to help them with some other things if they needed it. One family had a roof that was leaking and damaging their ceiling. Me and some of the other people were able to help fix it for a cheap price but my dumbass slipped off the ladder. Thankfully, I just cut my knee.” Steve gestures towards the line along his knee.
“So, nothing has changed in ten years. We’re all still clumsy and we all pick terrible fucking partners.” You and Steve laugh but Eddie just sits there smiling up at you.
“I think I made a good choice in choosing you that night.” His arms wrap tighter around your waist as he leans his head onto your chest. “Shit, every time I chose you, good things always followed.” Your fingers tangled in his hair as his lips travelled up your skin to your neck. “I missed you so fucking much, Y/N.” His palm gently rested against your cheek as he guided your lips to his.
###################
“Class! Settle!”, the teacher claps her hands, trying to be heard. “Now I want you all to welcome our new student here. This is Edward Munson.”
“Freak.” Jason Carver pretends to hide his remark behind a cough as you roll your eyes. The teacher scowls at him as she lightly pushes the new boy towards an empty seat.
He definitely was different than a lot of the people around here; at least visually. The only contact he made with anyone was glaring at Carver as he passed him to his desk. His hair was buzzed to the point that he was almost bald. The black shirt he wore hung off his frame, seemingly two sizes too big but when he leaned over to put his backpack on the floor his sleeve rose and you noticed the bruises on his arm that looked like fingerprints.
Your heart broke from him as you connected those bruises to the black eye that was prominent on his face. This boy had been through something awful.
When lunch came around, you found him sitting alone at a table near the window, his arms folded across his chest defensively.
“Hi. I’m, uh, Y/N. Is it ok if I join you?” Eddie sighed through his nose as his jaw tightened. You slowly descended into the chair in front of him. “I see you didn’t get any food. You can share some of mine if you want. I never finish it anyway.”
You found yourself getting self-conscious as he continued to glare out the window. “So…how do you like it here—”
“Can’t you people just leave me alone?!” His sharp tone made you jump.
“Well, excuse the fuck out of me.” You get up and move a couple chairs down, away from him. Out of the corner of his eye, he watches you pull a book out of your bag as you pick at your tray.
The table shuffles as he stands up and you keep your eyes on the pages in front of you as you hear the screeching of the chair being pulled back across from you.
“Have…have you read that book before?”, he asks. You glance over at him before placing your novel down on the table.
“Invasion of the Body Snatchers? No but in class they showed us the black and white movie. It was so cool so I begged my mom to buy me the book.” Eddie’s eyes meet yours for a brief moment before he glares down at the floor. “Have you read it?”
Eddie slowly nods his head. “Have you seen the 70s movie they made? It’s actually pretty scary.”
“There’s another movie!? I didn’t know that. You should come over to my house sometime and we can watch it.” His eyes widen in amusement at your excitement making you panic slightly. “I mean you don’t have to, of course. I just…I think you seem cool and I think it would be fun to hang out with you.”
“You think I seem cool?”
“Yeah, and don’t let people like Jason “douchebag” Carver get you down. Don’t let him make you think otherwise, okay?” For the first time since you saw him, a smile gradually paints his lips and you return it with one of your own. “Do you want some of my pretzels, Edward?”
He leans forward taking the snack that you offer him. “Eddie. I prefer Eddie.”
###############
You revel in the taste of him as his tongue invades your mouth and you gently guide him back against the mattress. His hands abruptly grip your hips when he feels you begin to grind against him.
“Wait. Wait, wait. Shit. I just… I’ve been wanting to taste you again so fucking bad.”
You smirk as you playful squint at him. “Are you not devouring me right now?”
“Not yet.” Eddie winks before lifting you, spinning you around so your hands and knees were on the bed, your ass displayed before him.
As you searched for the other man, Eddie’s tongue licked a long stripe through your sex causing you to close your eyes as you moaned. A strong hand reached for your face, pulling you to a set of lips that tasted like a mixture of mint and whiskey from the previous night.
Steve.
You reached for his neck pulling him closer to you as Eddie’s tongue moved in and out of your entrance, whining when you feel him abruptly move away.
“Shit, Harrington. I’m being selfish. You didn’t get to taste her pussy last time, did you?”
“Not directly. You coated my fingers so I literally only got a taste.”, he chuckles.
The bed jostles as they switch places and you cry out when you feel a tongue enter your body again. Steve’s technique was much different than Eddie’s. While the metalhead seemed to play with his food, the other man knew exactly what he wanted, hitting every sensitive spot with an aggressive passion that had you seeing stars.
“F-fuck, Steve. Just like…don’t stop. Ed-Eddie?”
“I’m right here, sweetheart.” He came around towards your end of the bed, stumbling forward as you reached for his cock and wrapped your lips around him. “Jesus! Whoa. Slow down, baby. Mmm-- it’s ok.” Eddie’s hands lifted your hair into a ponytail so he could watch you take him.
You pulled back, pumping him as your eyes looked up into his. “Don’t—mmm—Don’t want slow. 10 years was—fuck—slow enough.”
He smirked at you. “Did you hear that, Stevie?” The boy didn’t verbally responded but you felt his head shake against you as his lips wrapped around your clit.
“Show me…show me the men you are now…please. Please, please. Fuck!”
Your body trembled as the coil snapped and you came, your upper half falling flat against the mattress.
##################
“Y/N Y/L/N.”
“Steven Harrington.”
You didn’t even glance his way as you continued putting books in your locker. You were supposed to meet Eddie near the front of the school so you two could bike over to the movie theater to see District 9 and you didn’t want to keep your best friend waiting especially for King Steve.
“I was thinking you and I could go out sometime. Maybe go see a movie or something.”
“Wow. I’m not sure why you would think that. Now fuck off and leave me alone.”
As you shut your locker and start to leave, he loops around you, blocking your path.
“Shit. Look I’m sorry. Believe it or not I’m not very good at this. I just…always see you at lunch with the other kid that makes you laugh and hearing it… I think you’re really beautiful and sweet so I thought I’d shoot my shot, you know?”
As you listened to him speak, you took note of his demeanor and words. What stood out to you most was that he didn’t refer to Eddie as a freak like the other kids did. He seemed so jittery as he bounced on the balls of his feet and as he said that last sentence his eyes shifted nervously to the floor.
“I’ll, um, leave you alone now. I’m sorry if I bothered you.”
“Steve?”, you called as he started heading down the hall. “Eddie and I were going to go see a movie tonight. Would you want to tag along?”
“Oh. Um…is it ok with him? I don’t want to impose.”
“Naw, he’ll be fine. He may seem scary on the outside but he’s a sweet person. Plus, for some reason, he trusts my judgement. If I trust you than he will to.”
Steve flashes you a big toothy grin. “Ok. Sounds like fun.”
“And just so we are clear, Harrington! This is not a date. I don’t like you like that, okay?”
################
Steve’s hands roughly grabbed your hips, lifting your ass higher in the air as he guided his cock into your entrance. You both moaned at the feeling before he gradually pulled back until it was just his tip, watching between your bodies as he pushed himself back in. As your eyes rolled back, you clawed at the sheets underneath you, relishing in the feeling of him again.
He bent over you, placing his chest against your back as his hand came around to grip your jaw.
Opening your eyes, you were met with Eddie’s face as he kneeled in front of you.
“Does he feel good?” You nod your head as he moves some hair away from your face. “Tell him, Y/N. I think he’s earned it.”
Steve’s lips kissed your shoulder before he aggressively delivered slow, hard thrusts that pushed him so deep he punched the air from your lungs.
“Steve! Fuck… feels… amazing.”
He pushed up on to his knees pounding into you as you whimpered, your upper half collapsing flat on the bed, allowing him to take what was his. What was always his and Eddie’s. No matter how many men you had dated or been with, hell even before graduation night, your heart belonged to them.
“Steve, I…fuck… I love you. I love you both.”
His movements stalled as he and the metalhead exchanged a look. The man leaned over you again, his breath warming your ear.
“Do you mean that?”
“Yes. I love you so much. I missed you.”
He slowly began pumping into you once more, his hand sliding under your body and reaching to circle your clit.
“I love you to, honey. Cum for me, Y/N, please. I’ve waited so long to feel you again.”
With your body pushing back against his, the coil snapped and you mewled into the mattress below you.
“That’s it, baby. Fuck. Can…can we cum inside you?”
Your arm reached behind you to bring your lips to his. “Please, Steve. I need you to.”
His strong hand held the back of your neck, pressing you into the bed as he chased his high. The sounds of his grunts echoes through the room before his hips sputtered and you felt his spend warm your insides.
#################
“Yes! We are finally free! Ha ha!”, Eddie tosses his graduation cap in the air and away from you three.
“Really, Ed?” Wayne shakes his head as he smiles.
“Oh, I’m so proud of you guys!” Your mom excitedly hugs the three of you. “Steve, sweetie, where’re your parents?”
“Uh, Sweden, I think.”
You wrap your arms around him as he does the same.
“So…what’s the plan for the night?” Your dad quickly tries to change the subject which the boy appreciates.
“Well, Mr. Y/L/N, we are going back to my trailer—”
“MY trailer.”, Eddie’s uncle interrupts.
“And we’re going to sit on the floor, reading the bible and going over college applications.”
You and Steve laugh at the metalhead as your mom rolls her eyes. “Yeah, yeah. Just stay safe and don’t do anything stupid. Now get together I want to take a picture.”
Wayne obnoxiously forces his nephew’s graduation cap back on his head before stepping out of frame as Eddie wraps one arm around your back as you do the same. As he holds up the rock and roll symbol with his fingers, you and Steve can’t help but laugh as the camera flashes.
###########
Steve collapses on top of you as you both try to catch your breath. Your hand reaches behind you, your fingers running through his sweaty hair as you gently place your lips on his. He rolls off you and as you turn on to your back, you are met with Eddie’s soft but passion filled kisses.
“You ok, sweetheart? Do you need anything?”, he whispers.
Grinning, you climb onto your knees and wrap your arms around his neck. “I need you.”
He smiles as he kisses you again, his own fingers running through your messy hair.
“Do you want me to show you how rockstars do it?” Eddie playfully sticks out his tongue when you giggle and nod. “Keep your arms around me, ok?”
“Always.”
His smile grew as he hooked his own tattooed arms under both your knees and lifted you into the air. After adjusting you slightly, he moved his hips, thrusting his cock inside of you. Your jaw went slack as your eyes squeezed shut in pleasure, never feeling anyone this deep inside of you or at this angle. The muscles in his shoulders and chest tensed as he pumped into you.
“Oh…oh my god, Eddie. Please.”
His eyes scanned your face before your forehead fell against his. “Fuck, Y/N. I missed you so much. Mmm-I love you to, baby. I…I never stopped.”
You gripped your arms around him tighter as you lifted your hips to meet his, your pussy fluttering around him as you watch his eyes roll back and close.
Eddie swivels his body around falling flat with you onto the bed, unhooking your limbs from his neck and lifting your leg over his shoulder, holding it for leverage as he pounded into you.
You whimpered as his thumb abruptly came down to play with your clit.
“Please…please, please, please, Eddie!”, you begged; your body trembling as you came.
The metalhead hovered over you, his hair lightly brushing against the sides of your face as his beautiful eyes penetrated yours. Your palms reached up to cup his face as his pace quickened nearing his own release.
“Cum for me, baby. Please. I need you to cum inside of me just like Steve did.”
Just as he had on graduation night, his head fell into the nook between your neck and shoulder, his hips faltering before you felt him thrusting his seed deep into your pussy.
You try and cover the hiss that leaves your lips as Eddie pulls out knowing how he’ll react.
“Fuck, princess. I’m sorry. I didn’t hurt you did I.” He smiles as he watches you laugh. “What?”
“Steve’s right. You’re a big rockstar yet you’re still exactly the same. No, Ed, I’m fine. I’m just sore.”
Steve comes around to the side with a rag in his hand and gently cleans between your legs. “Do you need anything? I’m sure Hugh Heffner here has a pretty awesome shower.”
Eddie narrows his eyes at his friend. “I do actually but I also imagine Elle Woods over there also has an expensive shower so he needs to calm down.”
#################
“Steve. Steve. Jesus fucking Christ, STEVEN!”
Steve rolled over onto his back slowly, trying carefully not to move you too much. “What, Munson? Lower you voice.”
“Y/N’s not here.”
“What? What the fuck are you talking about?” He fully opens his eyes as he reaches for you but to his dismay his friend was right. “Where is she?”
“I don’t know. She’s not in the trailer or outside anywhere but all her stuff is gone.”
The man immediately bounced up from the bed and started reaching for his clothes. “Maybe…maybe she went to go food or something.”
“Without telling us? Or hell even inviting us. That’s not like her.”
“Yeah but neither was last night…”
Eddie grabbed one of his shirts from the floor as he waited for Steve to get dressed. “Did we fuck up?” The other man was silent as he tied his shoes. “Do you regret it?”
He rose to his feet and collected his keys. “No. I mean… she’s our girl, right? I’ve never…cared about anyone the way I do her. She makes me feel—”
“Wanted.”, Eddie finished. “Yeah… I know how you feel. I don’t regret it either.”
Steve pats his back comfortingly. “Come on, dude. Let’s go find her.”
#############
Steve woke up to the sound of thunder crashing against the house.  His head leaned back against the pillow as he listened to the sound of Eddie snoring next to him. A familiar sense of panic washed through him when he reached over and realized you weren’t in the bed with them.
He hastily tossed back his covers, grabbing his boxers as he flew down the hallway. His hand gripped his chest when he found you in one of Eddie’s band t-shirts, leaning against the backdoor as you watched the rain.
You smiled when you saw him standing there offering him the cup of coffee in your hand.
“You phone buzzed a few times. It may be your law firm but they can’t seem to get along without you.”, you giggle until you notice that panicked look in his eyes. “Steve? Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m, uh, I just woke up and—”
“And I wasn’t there. Fuck, baby, I’m sorry. I didn’t think. It started to rain and rockstar has a nice view.”
“You know, you two keep making fun of me and my house but I didn’t hear any complaints.” Eddie saunters into the room, coming up behind you as he wraps his arm around you and rests his chin on your head.
“Your phone kept going off too, Eds. To be fair, we did sleep all day but damn.”
“No one’s bugging you?”
“No one I care about more than you two right now.” You grin as Steve leans down to kiss your lips before Eddie gently pulls your hair to do the same. “I, um, I don’t actually have a permanent address I’m attached to. Before a book launch, they have me on the road. I was thinking, maybe, I could get an apartment or something near your firm.”
“Why don’t you move in with me? You and Eddie…if you guys want to. I mean I’m sure Munson has like 50 mansions but—”
“I’m not Mick fucking Jagger.”, he laughs. “I have this house and a relatively large house near the beach in California with the guys. All I have to do is pack a bag and my guitar.”
They both look at you with earnest, waiting for your answer.
“Let’s do it.”, you smile. “Geez, when word gets out, I guess people are going to finally figure out who The King and The Vampire are based on. Maybe now they’ll stop asking me who The Runaway is in love with.”
“Who IS she in love with?”, Steve grins snarkily in your direction.
You meet his sarcastic smile with one of your own.
“Both.”

across our great divide (6x08 coda)
minor spoilers for 6x08 <3 i wrote this mostly on my phone and the screen is shattered so please forgive any mistakes <3 // (ao3)
"So," Buck says slowly, drawing out the syllable. "'Fess up, who was your first kiss?"
Eddie snorts. He pinches the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger and pops the cap on his second beer, already feeling the first tendrils of tipsiness settle on his shoulders. "You're not going to let this go, are you?"
"Nope." Buck shrugs. "Chim told us his on the way back. Bobby told us at the station. You're the only one who hasn't."
"It's not an interesting story."
Buck perks up. "Oh, so there is a story." He looks like a dog with a bone, bright eyed and endearingly intrigued.
Eddie rolls his eyes. "You're an idiot."
Of course, nothing has ever been further from the truth. Buck is the smartest person he knows. Why he can't connect the dots Eddie has so clearly laid out for him is a mystery not even Holmes and Watson could solve.
Eddie shrugs, fingers picking at the label on his beer bottle, the edges peeled back from the steady drip of condensation. "Alright. What the hell?" He takes a long pull of his drink, wiping the back of his mouth with his hoodie sleeve, wondering why it is he's stalling when Buck already knows his juiciest secrets. He clears his throat. "Yeah. So. His name was Matthew O'Brien. Sixth grade. Laser tag lock-in with our middle school soccer team. Lasted for all of a second before we realized we hated it. Or he did, at least."
The silence that falls between them is a physical thing. Eddie feels Buck freeze more than he sees it, a disruption in the atmosphere that has him drawing his bottom lip between his teeth, picking at the dry skin there. He doesn't look up from his bottle, instead studying the emerald green of the glass as he sinks into memory.
He was so young then—not in a bad way, either. Eddie's done viewing his childhood sweetness as a badge of shame wrapped noose-tight around his neck. He's forgiven himself the so-called sins of his innocence, but it's all so humiliating when he thinks about it, in the same way adolescent reminiscence makes everyone cringe every now and then. His first kiss was terrible—barely a brush of lips in a broom closet while waiting their turn before they blushed and scurried away from each other like a pair of mice.
Suspended in the dreamlike haze of the afternoon, Eddie wonders what Matt's up to now. He hopes he survived their youth with less scars than Eddie himself did, but he's not sure about that. El Paso has a way of drawing blood, all hometowns do. That's how your roots grow, after all, right through the soil upon which you bled and then back up under your skin, forever tying you to the land that birthed you.
After a few moments, Buck nudges his foot underneath the table. He waits until Eddie meets his eyes and cocks his head, eyes soft and kind. "Matthew O'Brien, huh?"
"Yep."
Buck hums. He watches Eddie for a long moment, a careful look that feels more like a warm hand upon the shoulder than it does a judging assessment. Finally, the corner of Buck's mouth turns up into a small smile. "Guess you've got one up on me, then. I didn't kiss my first boy until I was in high school."
"Oh yeah?" Something like relief soaks into Eddie's lungs, the oxygen in the room suddenly tasting just a little bit sweeter than it did a moment ago. He moves his foot so it's resting more firmly against Buck's. "Share with the class."
Buck's laugh is a honey-soaked, rueful thing. "Oh man. Not much to tell. Swear. His name was Avery Johnson. Captain of the football team. He was a senior when I was a junior and we used to make out in the locker rooms every now and then before and after practice. We thought it'd be a good idea if we pretended the other didn't exist outside of that room, but when we were in it?" Buck's eyes go distant with a sepia toned memory that has his smile softening even more. He shrugs again. "I don't know. It was nice."
If there is a right answer here, a proper response that somehow encapsulates the dewdrop pockets of intimacy and honesty they've dropped in each other's laps, Eddie doesn't know it. He wishes he did. Wishes the words came easier, that poetry rolled off his tongue the same way it swirls in his head whenever he and Buck share the same air. But he's just a man, and a firefighter at that. He's never been a master of the spoken word, nor a poet whose lyrical vulnerability will last until every star in the last galaxy gutters out and dies. Oh, but if he was, though; all the stories he could tell, all the nuances of love he could spill if he could.
Instead he snorts a laugh and says, "What a fucking Sean Cody cliche."
And something about the way Buck throws his head back and laughs loud enough to fill up the entire space tells Eddie that maybe that was the right response after all.
Buck says, "Pennsylvania, man. You to tell me you don't have any queer clichés of your own, El Paso?"
And Eddie says, "Shut the hell up," because for a moment he's robbed breathless and struck stupid at the sight of a weak beam of sunlight choosing that moment to peek its head through the clouds and spatter Buck's hair with a warm pale light.
He almost says it then.
Right there at Buck's dining room table, he almost says, I love you, you know? But he swallows it back at the last second. Keeps it dammed up behind his teeth, tucked under his tongue for safe keeping.
Not yet, something far deeper, far wiser than himself whispers. Soon, but not yet.
He's lived enough life by now to know to listen to that little voice when it whispers because sometimes its whispers are louder than its screams. So he says something stupid to get Buck talking and laughing again, watches the way his hands flail about as he gets caught up in some story, voice slurring around the edges, and settles back into his chair to soak in every molecule of this moment.
Soon, that voice whispers again.
It's okay, he thinks. They have all the time in the world.

Author's Note | storm. my absolute beloved. my short king. I love you terribly and I'm so so so excited to finally fulfill this request. your support and your love has impacted me in a way that I don't think I'll ever be able to explain or repay you for. genuinely adore you with all my heart and I am hoping and praying this insane dose of comfort hits the spot for you. 🥺
Tumblr media
You'd insisted Edward go to work; maybe spend the next week at his own apartment this time. With the limited amount of sick days Edward has saved up in his arsenal, it would only end up being a disaster. He'd get sick and if he didn't take time off, he'd have to trudge himself miserably to work and struggle through the sniffles and coughing fits. It's something he could've easily avoided if he wasn't insistent on being right by your side through all of it.
He also insists that he knows how to take care of you better than any doctor could. And you bet that's not far from the truth. He didn't like talking about his past much. He lived in it often enough in his mind. You're the escape. His safehouse. But based on the little he's let you in on, you figure the harsh winters had turned him into a self-sufficient person. Someone who could stave off the bitter cold and the pervasive rot in order to survive.
But this doesn't simply feel like survival. This feels like living--thriving--as Edward puts himself at your disposal. A continued rotation of mugs of warm tea with honey comes through your door. He'd managed to make sense of your mess of a hallway closet and picked out every blanket you owned. The weight of his care is almost deafening.
Even when he's silent for hours at a time, he seems to sense exactly when you need help getting up to go to the bathroom or when your mug of tea is getting low or when you're too cold or too warm. The day is already half over and Edward has spent all of that time, waiting hand and foot on you.
"You don't have to do this," you chuckle hoarsely. "You should really go home before you get yourself sick."
"I have a strong immune system, bunny. No need to worry your little head." he replies absentmindedly, eyes fixed on the morning paper's crossword puzzle laid across his raised knee. His fingertips gingerly graze across your spine before the flat of his palm lays protectively on the small of your back. The gentle assertion over your being could knock the breath out of you and send you into yet another coughing fit.
Your strained throat struggles slightly to voice the internal spiral you're going down. "Why shouldn't I? You've wasted the day away sitting with me...and if I get you sick...you'll have to take more time off...and I know that you don't get paid time off. I just do-"
Edward's voice raises, "Wasted? You think I've wasted my day by taking care of you?"
Rephrased that way...it almost sounds like an insult. You find another way to begin profusely apologizing for the implication before he scoffs.
"I wouldn't be here if I didn't want to be." From where you lay on your stomach, you can't see his expression. But you can picture his round cheeks flushing from the vulnerability; could picture him looking down through his glasses at his lap in order to regain some composure.
You feel him shift as he lays on his side and pulls you into the warm alcove in his arms. Instinctually, you melt into his grasp. In just those few seconds...nothing else seems to matter. He envelopes your figure quickly with his own lumbering height. His long arms seem to cradle your existence. And it quells an ache you didn't even know existed inside.
Head already fogging up from the feeling of his body wrapping around yours, you mumble, "I don't think anyone has ever loved me like you do."
He giggles airily--almost to himself--and kisses your hair, "Good. Because I can assure you...there's no one else like us in this entire world. That's why I can't lose you."
The intensity might've unnerved you if you were in your right mind; if you weren't half loopy from cough syrup and from Edward's suffocating passion. But now...now it just feels normal. It feels like home.

arkham riddler x fem!alternative reality!reader
good looking series? should i do a part 2? this is a pilot.
cw_villans_hero riddler_alternate reality_implied death_ooc riddler.
based on this idea: link!
overview; eddie and y/n have been together for years, since they met somewhere in between childhood, they became the other's soulmate. eddie's work with batman puts his wife on edge many times, but he calms her into believing it's just another shift, but is it?
Tumblr media
"honey, it's late."
"yes i know, but i need to finish this, batman needs this tomorrow."
"well, i'm sure bruce isn't right now stressing and is with selina right now."
his exasperated sigh reaches your ears just as his chair spins to look at you, eddie looks tired, he normally doesn't overwork as much with villans. y/n got closer to eddie and offered her hand for him to grab, he did, bringing it close to his face where he cuddled it. his tired face leaned towards it, acting as if he was sleeping on it
"c'mon eddie, let's get you to bed," he mumbled yes and nodded in agreement. he stood up and you guided him into the room, eddie flopped into the mattress and you sat on it, looking at him with strange fondness. suddenly you were pulled down to lay with him while being wrapped in his arms, he delivered you a short kiss and then layed his head onto you shoulder.
the sheet was very soft, your hand grabbed it and pulled it up, eddie had fallen asleep quickly, it wasn't of him to pull an all-nighter, most of the nights after 9 pm he was already in bed and ready to sleep, his face seemed in peace, the soft brown locks were straight in his forehead, you picked his glasses and left them in the nightstand, only to come back to his fully embrace.
the hug continued for a couple of hours, and eddie didn't stir, y/n fell completely asleep next to him, and the night continued safe and sound, but the ambient was broken by a phone.
eddie's phone
eddie sat up groggily and grabbed the phone, y/n didn't move from her laying position, only waking up a bit. his stance changed from relaxed to stressed and she heard some mumbles of protest, then a sigh, a very deep sigh. when he hanged up the phone, eddie got her attention
"what is it eddie?"
"i gotta go, this new villan appeared again, i got the coordinates."
"eddie, this was dangerous from the second you joined bruce's work." you started
"you accepted this as my wife, y/n!" eddie called from the closet
"yes, but can't i be worried for you?" you sat up "can't i be worried for us?"
"i'm not going to get hurt."
"you don't know that!"
"well have some faith in me!" he exclaimed matching your angry tone, there were time like this, times in which his stubbornness was a bad thing, even though it was directed to good. and it would blind him horribly, and just show him that the only way was his. soon the screams became more strong and violent.
"goddammit! you are going to die if you continue like this, you need to listen!-"
"no y/n! this is for gotham, this city needs to be protected and we have a lot of things to take care of in here-"
"and what about me?! don't you need to think of how your death would affect ME?"
he fell silent, and mumbled your name while massaging his temple, he was going to apologize but you continued
"you are right now thinking of only gotham and you are willing to give it all away! what about you?! what would be of you if there is nothing else?! you aren't aware that i love you, and you think you can just leave and i'll be okay! and i can assure you IT'S NOT!" the phone ringing stopped you mid argument, he looked at it, then at you again.
sigh "just take it." and you flopped into bed, facing into the wall
"y/n.."
"go, we'll talk about this later."
he kept quiet, then eddie walked towards you and kissed your forehead
"i'm sorry, sweetheart."
the goodbye was silent, very silent, eddie left like a breeze, your eyes were screwed shut but they opened again when your phone rang, you quickly woke up and answered
“hello?” you heard from the other line a cough and your name, it took you sometime to recognize the voice,
eddie’s voice
“eddie! what’s wrong?-”
“y/n, listen, it was a trap, fuck, i should’ve listened to you-” he coughed a bit more
“what? what was a trap?” you asked confused
“this! th-the call!” he exclaimed, you were feeling on edge “i’m- shit, i’m gonna die, y/n.” that’s when your world dropped
“EDDIE WHERE ARE YOU?!”
“y/n, it’s too late, i’m dying” you stood up, and left the house with your phone in hand, eddie continued
“i love you, and i’m sorry i put my work over you, many times.” you never registered when your tears began falling, but it could be triggered by the sobs that racked from his throat “i’m stubborn, a-and,  everything hurts, y/n, it hurts.”
“i know, eddie, i’m going to the police station-”
“it’s too late, the fire’s consuming everything, i’ll die before bruce get’s here. listen, i love you much, and i’m sorry i’m leaving you like this, i should’ve listened to you, i’m sorry, i’m so, so so sorry you have to go through this, but the most thing that i’m sorry about is that i didn’t spend more time with you.” you were at the doorstep to the police, ready to make a mess and save him, so you could scold him for being so careless
“y/n i love you, please, don’t cry for me.”
“i love you, i’ll save you eddie-”
what you heard while going into the police was your song, the one you both loved; eddie my love. suddenly heard through the speaker a bang,  a piece of wood fell over the phone.
the police could hear your screams for him.

CW: daddy kink, dom Steve and sub reader, fem pronouns/body parts, smut, fluff, soft Steve, pet names, kinda mean Steve. If i missed anything please let me know
Steve was always in a caregiver type mood, though he never really understood what it meant
his sex life was pretty vanilla up until he met you tbh
you always seemed to not mind the antics Steve did to keep you safe. So Stevie boy slowly upped the antics
it went from not letting you tie your own shoes, to helping you pick out clothes because as Steve says “trust me, pretty girl. I know what’s best”
which you didn’t think much of it, because yeah, Steve did know best. but he never said it to make you feel less than him and you knew that
Steve eventually got you to a point that if you were with him, no matter who else was around, your brain went BURRRR
no one really brought it up either.
Steve would order your food for you, and always held your hand, and was on the side closet to the road, and lead you place’s because he can’t let his baby get lost
and as of lately, between all of Steve’s gestures and praises your brain can NOT shake the thought of “Daddy” whenever you even got a glimpse of him
though, you held that in. didn’t say anything to him in fear he’d think you’re weird
you thought you were holding it in well until today
it’s been on the tip of your tongue since you walked into Steve’s house at 8:30am
but when Steve got you upstairs, and in his bed, holding it in? out the window
Steve was being such a tease, soft touches, soft kisses
“Awe baby, what’s wrong? you need somethin’ from me?”
too shy to speak, you simply nodded. eyes glassed over, need and desperation clouding your brain and Steve knew it
Eddie told Steve one time about how being called daddy in AND out of the bedroom
since that conversation Steve’s been imagining you whimpering underneath him
“daddy..please”
and during the day, when you’re alone and spacey
“can you get me the cup daddy? can’t reach”
he needed it. absolutely needed it
today was the day he was gonna get what he needed
Steve came back to reality when he heard you huff
“need me to take care of this pretty cunt?”
a soft please would leave your mouth
“sorry pumpkin” he’d remove his hand from your core and continue speaking. “need you to ask me real pretty. can you do that for daddy?”
he watched your face, looking for any sign of discomfort in his wording
your brain short circuited, simply blanked and every thought of holding back was GONE
“please daddy..please. i’ll be good, i’ll do anything. please please touch me”
that’s all Steve needed, to hear your desperate tone begging him to ruin your cunt
“aww baby, you’re soaked. don’t even think you need my fingers to spread you out. do i?”
you shook your head at him, eyes already teary, “need you, all of you. please.”
without much warning, his tip was pressing into your entrance. eyes rolling into the back of your head
you tried to grind against him. immediately he pushed your hips flat against his bed
“don’t be greedy baby. thought you were daddy’s good girl hmm? you’ll take what i give you, when i give it to you. Understood?”
with a fast nod of the head, he pushed all the way in
your brain was empty
between the feeling of Steve’s cock so deep inside of you and the words leaving his mouth, you were done for
“fuck, you feel so good. swear this pussy was made for me huh?”
“squeezing me like a damn glove”
“look at you honey, i’ve barely fucked you and you’ve already gone dumb”
he felt you wall squeeze him just the way he was wanting
“close already? wanna cum pretty? cmon, ask daddy nicely and maybe i’ll let you”
moans were falling from your lips
“pl..” and “can’t” “need”
he decided he’ll be nice today
“too dumb to talk? it’s okay baby, daddy’s got you. cmon, cum all over me.”
as soon as he gave you permission, you were done. orgasam taking over
Steve stopped moving as soon as he saw your eyes screw shut.
slowly pulling himself out of you
“Stevie..you didn’t-“ he cut you off
“it’s okay, promise. wanna get you all cleaned up. daddy knows best, remember?”

Vecna’s Curse
‘“ Uhh... Steve.” Dustin froze in his spot, his finger shaking.
“ Mom.” Y/ N called out. 1 second ago she was at a gravesite, and now she was back at her old house, in her own town. “ Mom, is that you?” she called. It couldn’t be her mom, it was impossible. It had to be Vecna, but it sounded so real.
“ Honey... are you home?” her mother called after her.
“ Mom... what are you doing here?” she asked stupidly. This was her mothers’ house obviously.
“ YOU COULDN’T SAVE ME!” her mother shouted. When she turned around her face was covered in bruises and she had a bloody nose. “ Why didn’t you save me?”
“ What do you mean?” Y/N asked.
“ You call yourself a hero, you spend all day protecting people, but you couldn’t save me!” her mothers voice seemed so real, but she was mean, and harsh, and was taller, towering over Y/N by about 2 feet.
“ I tried, I was only a ki-”
“ Why didn’t you help me, you should have saved me!”
“ STOP IT PLEASE YOU DON’T MEAN IT.”
“ I know why you didn’t save me, because you hate me.” she whispered. She was hurrying around the kitchen baking a peach pie. Y/N was allergic to peaches, but her dad would always make her eat them because “ he didnt want to waste food”.
“ I don’t hate you, mom. I never hated yo-”
“ Oh but you do... hate me. You hate me because I didn’t help you, you hate me because I didn’t protect you-”
“ I don’t hate you.... mommy please stop. Please believe me.”
“ You watched me die because you resented me for not believing you.” Y/n opened her mouth to say something, but the only thing that came out was babbling like she was a child.
She felt like she was a child, she was a child back then, she was just a underweight anemic kid who tried so very hard to save her mother, but it didn’t cut it. Not when she was protecting her father.
A firm knock fell on the front door. She heard footsteps appear behind her, they were big heavy footsteps, work boots, she could recognize that sound anywhere. That dreaded sound.
“ Ohh... daddys home.” her mother chirped.
When she turned around, it wasn’t her dad, it was him. He was tall and had large feet. His skin looked like it was peeling off. Y/N didn’t know what to do, she just knew to run.
She ran towards the door, but it was boarded shut. She could hear Vecna speeking, but the blood was pumping so fast that she didn’t hear a word. She ran up the stairs , and the only door that was open was the run to the bedroom. She hid in her closet, like she did when she little.
She always hid in her closet because her dad was too lazy, fat and drunk to bother looking for her. And due to all the clothes it was almost soundproof so she could pretend that she was somewhere else.
But as soon as she stepped into the closet, she stepped right through the floorboard and fell straight down. Landing on her butt in a crowed emergency room, she quickly scrambled up, and took off to the nearest exit. It was  boarded up and she kicked at it.
Alarms went off in the next room over, and it caught her attention. It was Steve, her Steve, the Steve that she swore to protect. He had a tube down his throat and his body was jerking around and thrashing madly. His heart monitor beeping loudly.
“ You can’t protect him.” a voice echoed in her head, and bounced around her skull.
“ STEVE... STEVE.... ARE YOU OKAY, STEVE!” she shouted, tapping at the glass, trying to wake him up. He looked dead.
“ You can’t save him.” the lights started to flicker. She should have ran, but she couldn’t leave him behind.
“ You can’t save Eddie.”
She turned around and there was her brother lying on the floor, bleeding out of his stomach. He was spitting up blood and convulsing.
“ Oh my god, Eddie.” she said running over to him. “ Eddie please be okay.” she pleaded falling to the ground next to him. “ Eddie, come on, get up, we gotta go.”
“ You cant save any of them.” The lights turned off, leaving her in darkness. They flashed back on and Eddie was gone. “ You can’t help any of them.” Vecna touched the back of her hair. She turned around and saw about a dozen hospital beds, all filled with her friends. Max, Steve, El.
“ No... no... no. I can help them. I can save them.” she pleaded, “ I can save them, I can, I can.” she was covered in blood, she could smell the metal on her hands.
“ You won’t be able to save them, like you couldn’t save your mom.” he whispered in her ear.
She scrambled upwards, running to the nearest hospital bed. “ MAX...MAX PLEASE GET UP.”
“ When they die, the blood is gonna be on your hands.” he spoke. “ Look it already is.”
“ NO.” she pleaded falling to her knees. She couldn’t bring herself to run, he was right, she couldn’t save anyone, she was no hero no matter how much she pretended to be one. She wasn’t able to save her mom, and she wouldn’t be able to save the man that she loved. She wasn’t going to be able to save her friends. Everytime that anyone got close to her, they would get hurt. She was better off dead.
“ Y/N... its ti-”
“ If I could.” music reverberated in her head, and bounced around in her skull.  She glanced around and saw a portal to her home, the portal where Steve was waiting, he was holding on to her like she was her life line.
“ I’d make a deal with god, and get him to trade our places.”
Steve was waiting for her, just on the other side, she just had to get to him. He was right there, her friends were right there. She scrambled up running off, Vecna grabbed at her but she was able to get away.
“ Be running up that road.”
Y/N eyes popped open, and she fell back to the ground. The blood was pumping in her ears, tears were running down her face and she was breathing so hard her face was turning red.
“ Y/N... Y/N are you okay?”  Steve’s voice was the only one that she could make out amongst the voices.
“ I...I-”
Someone was holding her, she wanted to run and hide, but the touch felt warm and comforting, and she for the first time in a while she felt safe. She stopped scrambling around and allowed herself to relax into his arms.
“You’re okay... you’re okay.”

Final Post (I think😅)
But the way Eddie is so uninterested in his OWN girlfriend and his OWN relationship is so funny to me, cause how is it that he's never asked anyone to watch Chris so he can take Marisol out, but he asked Marisol to watch Chris TWICE in ONE WEEK so he could go out with Tommy (Eddie, honey your gay is showing)
Eddie, when he's told to spend time with his girlfriend:

Ohhh 70 (“After everything we’ve been through, you still don’t think that I love you?”) OR 93 (“You’re more than that.”) for the prompt thing, whichever you prefer! I always adore your writing, thank you so much for sharing it with us ☺️
OR? No, both. And thank you, you're very sweet. On ao3 here.
Most of the time, Buck feels like there’s no one in the world who understands Eddie as well as he does. Most of the time. Because there are still some other times when he’s completely in the dark.
And sure, okay, it makes sense on some level because they all have their blind spots—of course he’s going to have a few where Eddie is concerned as well—but they never fail to catch him by surprise.
A month after Eddie comes home from the hospital, Buck is having coffee with Carla while Eddie’s at a physical therapy appointment and he offhandedly says—
“Not sure why I never see Ana. You would think Eddie being shot would make her want to be around more, not less—”
“Buck,” Carla interrupts, a strange look passing over her face. “Honey...Eddie broke up with her three weeks ago.”
That stops Buck short, makes him feel like he’s missed a step on the stairs.
“What?” His mouth is dry. He swallows. “He—why?”
Carla picks up her cup and takes a long sip, as if she needs the extra seconds to figure out what to say, and Buck backtracks.
“No, forget it, that’s—it’s not my business,” he says. It’s not. Even if it feels a little like it should be, even if he doesn’t understand why Eddie would tell Carla and not him, even if he’s Eddie’s best friend—
Buck knows that Eddie’s a private person. He knows that sometimes Eddie keeps things close to his chest while he’s thinking them through. Eddie hadn’t said a word about Shannon until she walked into the station and aired their business for all of them to hear. He barely talked about Ana in the first place. He changed his will and sat on that information for a year—
Buck’s not upset it’s just—it feels—
The thing is.
The thing is…He’s not oblivious. He knows how he feels about Eddie. How he’s felt for at least the past two years. Like he can’t breathe, can’t speak, can’t look at him without feeling like he’s screaming with it, bleeding love all over, unable to stop it dripping from every pore. Exposed and pathetically obvious, and the whole time Eddie has just—said nothing. Ignored it, Buck assumes, because he can’t not have noticed, can’t not have seen.
And maybe sometimes Buck has wondered if Eddie wasn’t ignoring it. If he felt the same and just couldn’t say it. Because he was grieving and wasn’t ready—
But then he was. He was ready. And he chose Ana Flores.
That was the end of it. That was supposed to be the end of it. Because Buck’s not a masochist, he knows he hangs onto things for too long, but he’s been working on knowing when to let go.
Except—except Eddie got shot. Eddie got shot and Buck sat on a hospital bed and stared as Eddie said no one will ever fight for my son as hard as you and you act like you’re expendable…but you’re not and the words felt…heavy. The air, weighted. And Eddie couldn’t look at him and Buck could swear that he was trying to say—
Buck knows he shouldn’t be. But there’s a part of him that’s angry. That wants to pace and run and clasp Eddie’s face between his hands and ask really? Now? Because—because Eddie got shot. Eddie got shot and Buck barely survived it, thought if Eddie died, he would have died with him, was more terrified than he’s ever been in his life. But he did survive. And he moved on. He kissed Taylor. He closed the door.
So Eddie’s not allowed to make big declarations that he could have made a year ago and then break up with his girlfriend when Buck is finally trying—
Okay, maybe he’s a little upset.
The rest of him though—most of him, really—knows he doesn’t have any right to be angry. Which is why most of him is just…tired. Tired and terrified and still so in love.
Buck thinks maybe Eddie was right all those months ago. The universe doesn’t scream. It just laughs. At him.
“Buck?” Carla’s gaze is soft. Steady.
Buck clears his throat. Drains the last dregs of his coffee. He tries not to feel like he’s swallowed glass.
“Did I tell you I’m seeing someone?” He asks, forcing a smile. “She’s a reporter. She was—she was at Eddie’s homecoming actually, maybe you met her. It’s still pretty new, but we’ve been friends for a while. Going pretty well so far.”
Something flickers in Carla’s eyes, but she takes a breath and smiles.
“That’s great, Buckaroo,” she replies. “I’m happy for you.”
He’s trying. He’s really trying.
He doesn’t ask Eddie about the breakup.
*
Recovery is slow.
Buck doesn’t really like thinking about it as recovery because Eddie’s the one who got shot. Eddie’s the one who was in a sling and in physical therapy and had to spend months waiting to be well enough to get cleared to go back to work.
Eddie’s the one who got shot. The one whose blood flooded the street. The one who spent days unconscious in the hospital. The one who almost died.
Eddie’s the only one who has anything to recover from.
Dr. Copeland doesn’t agree. Buck mentions that he’s having trouble sleeping, that his chest gets tight if he goes too long without seeing Eddie and Christopher, that he can’t breathe sometimes when he’s on shift and Eddie’s out of sight.
She refers him out to a trauma specialist. He tries to argue that it’s not his trauma, but she just looks at him for a long moment.
“When you say you can’t sleep, is it insomnia? Or do you have nightmares that wake you up?”
Buck bites his lip and looks down at his hands. When he blinks, they’re streaked with red. When he blinks again, they’re clean. He curls his fingers into fists to prevent them from shaking.
“A little of both,” he admits.
“And when it’s nightmares, what are they about?”
“…blood.” Eddie’s blood in the street, on his hands, splashed across his face, on his tongue—
She hums.
“Evan,” she says quietly. “It’s okay. It’s not a weakness to admit that you need help. And just because you weren’t shot yourself doesn’t mean you didn’t experience something traumatic. You’re allowed to seek treatment.”
Buck swallows. “I feel like…I should be better by now,” he admits. “Better than this. Shouldn’t it be easier?”
“Recovery is a process,” Dr. Copeland replies. “A journey. And it doesn’t always move in a straight line. There’s no timetable.”
Recovery. He makes a face.
But, he goes to see the specialist. He’s not sure how much it helps.
Blood splashing across his face, water running red, skin scrubbed raw—
Buck sits up gasping, cold sweat beading across his brow. Taylor is sound asleep on the other side of the bed, the distance between them a chasm he doesn’t know how to cross. He doesn’t know if he wants to even if he did.
He shivers. Grabs his phone. Quietly descends the steps of the loft to settle on the couch.
“Buck. Hey.” Eddie’s voice is gravelly and soft from sleep. Buck winces.
“Sorry,” he says. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“I don’t mind,” Eddie replies. “You know I don’t mind.”
Eddie pauses. “What was it tonight?”
Buck exhales shakily. “Your heart stopped in the truck before we could get to the hospital. I couldn’t get it to start again. I know it didn’t happen that way, but I still—”
“It’s okay,” Eddie says. “I’m okay. That—it wasn’t real.”
“Yeah.” It felt real though. Buck can still feel ribs cracking under phantom compressions, the slick of blood on his hands. He can taste Eddie’s blood in his mouth.
“What do you need?”
Buck stretches out and closes his eyes, the phone pressed hard to his ear.
You. Just you. Always you.
“Can you—” His throat clicks. “Can you just talk? It doesn’t matter about what, I just—”
I need to hear your voice. I need to hear you alive.
“Christopher picked a project for the science fair,” Eddie says. “You have to promise to act surprised when he tells you though. He’s really excited.”
“Oh yeah? I can do that. What is it?”
“Well…”
Buck falls asleep again with Eddie’s voice in his ear and he doesn’t dream again. Taylor wakes him on the couch in the morning, an odd look on her face—he doesn’t know how to explain that it’s not her fault. She just can’t help him. Perhaps she never could.
Buck thinks maybe there’s still a part of her that wants him to chase her. But he’s in no condition to chase anyone, even if he wanted to. It takes enough out of him to hold himself together. And to fight against what seems more and more inevitable.
So. Maybe he should stop fighting it.
He sighs and scrubs a hand over his face as he sits up.
“I think we should probably talk,” he says quietly.
Taylor tucks a strand of hair behind her ear and sinks down onto the couch next to him.
“I think we should.”
It ends as quickly as it began.
*
Christmas takes him by surprise. It’s not that Buck doesn’t notice the fall slipping away—a Halloween shift, a Veteran’s Day that has Eddie a little quieter, a little shakier, than usual, and Thanksgiving lasts practically a whole week with all the leftovers that end up in the station—but somehow it doesn’t fully register until he looks up at the calendar in the middle of December and sees a smiling Christmas tree sticker on a date ten days out. They’re not working, so the only question is where he’s going to end up, if anywhere. Although, he supposes even that’s not really a question.
He knows where he’ll end up.
Five days before Christmas, a last-minute tree has been wrangled into the Diaz house and Buck is fighting with a tangled set of lights while Eddie pulls out wrapping paper and ribbons and retrieves the hidden stash of gifts for Christopher from his closet. Christopher himself is fast asleep in his room, worn out from the day of running around, and without the extra person to focus on Buck takes a moment and lets himself just...watch Eddie. Sitting on the floor in low light with his legs stretched out, surrounded by ornaments and boxes and stray clippings and a small pile of somewhat lumpy, clumsily wrapped gifts, his lower lip caught between his teeth as he focuses on trying to figure out the right way to fold the wrapping paper—
There’s a stray piece of tinsel in his hair and a laugh catches in Buck’s throat, even as the rest of him aches with a sudden, fierce urge to brush it away.
He aches. Because this—this is what he wants. Eddie and Christopher and going around town to finish the Christmas shopping, picking out a tree and decorating it as a family, coming home to this day after day after day and knowing it’s where he’s supposed to be—
Eddie got shot. Eddie got shot and it was the worst moment of Buck’s life. He thinks sometimes that he would rather have his leg crushed under a thousand ladder trucks than risk going through that again, but—but running away didn’t make him stop loving Eddie. Dating Taylor didn’t make him stop loving Eddie. Time hasn’t made him feel anything less, if anything it’s just cemented things.
So...so if Eddie is going to have the power to hurt him that badly regardless of whether Buck admits it out loud, if the risk of loss is going to be there anyway...shouldn’t he at least get to have everything? All the good parts?
Don’t they deserve the chance to be happy?
“Buck?” Eddie’s brow is furrowed in concern. “You okay?”
Buck opens his mouth, intending to reassure him, but what comes out is—
“Are you in love with me?” Eddie freezes and Buck resists the urge to panic and take it back.
“Because—” Buck clears his throat. “Because sometimes I think you might be, and—”
“Yes.” It’s quiet, barely a breath, but that single word hangs in the air. Buck’s heart races.
“You could have told me,” he replies. “Why—why didn’t you just—?”
Eddie looks away and Buck catches a familiar look flickering across his face. Doubt, shame, fear—everything that he himself has felt—
Oh.
Blind spots.
He never considered that Eddie might be just as afraid of rejection as he is. He never considered that what’s been so painfully obvious to him, might not have been to Eddie himself.
Buck gets up from the couch, stepping carefully around the mess on the floor until he can kneel down next to Eddie. Eddie, whose jaw is tight, shoulders tense, like he’s waiting for a blow.
“After everything we’ve been through...you still don’t know that I love you?” Buck asks quietly.
Eddie sucks in a startled breath, turning back to look at him, his gaze searching. Buck holds it steadily and waits. It’s not the first time he’s walked out on a limb. But it is the first time he’s had someone else out there with him.
If it cracks this time, they’ll fall together.
“I didn’t think—” Eddie’s eyes close briefly as he clears his throat. “I didn’t think I was enough.”
“You are,” Buck replies. “You’re more than—Eddie—”
“We have a life,” he says when he can get his thoughts in line. “We built a life. Together. Even if we didn’t say that was what we were doing, it’s what we did. So, maybe—maybe we can try being a little more honest about what we want while we’re living it? I don’t—I don’t want to waste anymore time.”
Eddie looks down—then, he reaches out slowly for Buck’s hand, his fingers finding the spaces between Buck’s and slotting in.
Buck squeezes gently. Eddie squeezes back.
“Okay,” Eddie agrees. “Let’s try that.”
Buck does pluck the tinsel from Eddie’s hair, but when he tosses it away, his hand comes right back, fingers sliding into the strands to keep Eddie still. Eddie’s eyes are dark in the dim light, but his lips curve faintly up as Buck leans in.
Kissing him feels like coming home.

Daughter of the Sea - Chapter 1
Series Masterlist
Main Masterlist
Tumblr media
(Y/n) stands in the kitchen of her mother and step-father's apartment, making the bean dip Smelly Gabe liked so much.
(Y/n) fixes her gaze on the counter but then she lets out a yelp as something hits her in between her shoulder blades.
"Hurry it up, girl!" Smelly Gabe snarls.
"Yes sir," (Y/n) murmurs.
A few minutes later, Gabe stalks into the kitchen, takes the dip without so much of a thank you.
(Y/n) fixes her gaze on the shoe on the ground before she moves to her room. She climbs into her bed, getting under her covers. (Y/n) turns, facing the wall.
She closes her eyes, falling to an uneasy sleep.
(Y/n) watches, disconnected from the others in the dream, as one of her brother's teachers turns into something that reminded her of a demon, or something similar that she'd read books about. The woman had bat wings, claws, and a mouth of yellow fangs.
Then (Y/n) looks around, her eyes widening in shock as she sees her brother holding a bronze sword.
Percy swings the sword, the demon exploding into yellow powder, vaporizing on the spot.
A hand on (Y/n)'s shoulder has (Y/n) jolting awake. "Honey? Are you okay?" Sally Jackson asks.
Catching the wide-eyed look of horror on (Y/n)'s face, Sally wraps her daughter in a hug.
(Y/n)'s breathing steadies, and she breathes in her mother's familiar scent - chocolate, licorice, and all the other things she sold at the candy shop in Grand Central Station.
"Did you get all your work done?" Sally asks softly, her thumb brushing over a slightly visible bruise that had appeared at the base of the back of her neck.
(Y/n) hums in reply.
. . .
The next day, (Y/n) is once again lying in her bed, not wanting to have to deal with Gabe throwing more shoes or glass bottles at / near her.
. . .
Percy walks into the apartment, dragging his suitcase behind him, hoping his mom would be home from work. Instead, Smelly Gabe is in the living room, playing poker with his buddies. The television blares ESPN; chips and beer cans are strewn all over the carpet.
Hardly looking up, he says around his cigar, "So, you're home."
"Where's my mom? (Y/n)?"
"Mom's working," Gabe says. "The girl's in her room. You got any cash?"
"That's it. No Welcome back. Good to see you. How has your life been the last six months?
Gabe had put on weight since the last time Percy had seen him. Gabe looked like a tuskless walrus in thrift-store clothes. He has about three hairs on his head, all combed over his bald scalp.
"I don't have any cash," Percy replies.
Gabe raises a greasy eyebrow. Gabe could sniff out money like a bloodhound, which is surprising, since his own smell should've covered up everything else.
"You took a taxi from the bus station," he says. "Probably paid with a twenty. Got six, seven bucks in change. Somebody expects to live under this roof, he ought to carry his own weight. Am I right, Eddie?"
Eddie, the super of the apartment building, looks at Percy with a twinge of sympathy. "Come on, Gabe," he says. The guy just got here."
"Am I right?" Gabe repeats.
Eddie scowls into his bowl of pretzels. The two other guys pass gas in harmony.
"Fine," Percy says. He digs a wad of dollars out of his pocket and throws the money on the table. "I hope you lose."
"Your report card came, brain boy!" He shouts back at Percy. "I wouldn't act so snooty!"
Percy slams the door to his room, which isn't really his room. During school months, it is Gabe's 'study.' He doesn't study anything in there except old car magazines, but he loves shoving his stuff in Percy's closet, leaving his muddy boots on the windowsill, and doing his best to make the place smell like his nasty cologne, cigars, and stale beer.
Percy drops his suitcase on the bed. Home sweet home he thinks.
Gabe's smell is almost worse than the nightmares about Mrs. Dodds, or the sound of that old fruit lady's shears snipping the yarn.
Percy sits, lost in his thoughts.
Then he hears his mom's voice, "Percy?" She opens the bedroom door, and his fears melt. "Oh, Percy," she hugs him tight. "I can't believe it. You've grown since Christmas."
Sally had brought Percy a bag of 'free samples' the way she always did whenever he'd come home.
The two sit together on the bed. While Percy attacks the blueberry sour strings, she runs her hands through his hair, demanding to know everything that he hadn't put in his letters. She doesn't mention his getting expelled. She doesn't seem to care about that.
Percy tells his mother that she is smothering him, but secretly, Percy is really, really glad to see her.
From the other room, Gabe yells, "Hey, Sally - how about some bean dip, huh?"
Percy grits his teeth. My mom is the nicest lady in the world. She should be married to a millionaire, not to some jerk like Gabe.
(Y/n) pads into Percy's room, and the dark haired boy brightens at the sight of his younger twin.
"I've got the dip, Mom," (Y/n) says softly. Sally gazes at her daughter for a moment, her gaze sad.
"Wait, (Y/n)," Sally says, and (Y/n) turns back to face her mother. "I've got a surprise for the two of you," she says. "We're going to the beach."
Percy's eyes widen. "Montauk?"
"Three nights - same cabin," Sally replies.
"When?" (Y/n) asks, looking excited.
She smiles, "As soon as I get changed."
(Y/n) can't believe it. Mom, Percy, and I hadn't been to Montauk in the last two summers because Gabe had said that there wasn't enough money.
Gabe appears in the doorway behind (Y/n) and growls, "Bean dip, Sally? Didn't you hear me?"
Percy wants to punch him, but he meets his mother's eyes, and understands that she is offering him a deal: Be nice to Gabe for a little while; just until she's ready to leave for Montauk.
"I've got it, Gabe," (Y/n) says.
"Sorry, honey," Sally says, looking at her husband. "We were just talking about the trip."
Gabe's eyes get small. "The trip? You mean you were serious about that?"
"I knew it," Percy mutters. "He won't let us go."
"Of course he will," Sally says evenly. "Your stepfather is just worried about money."
(Y/n) turns to face Gabe, smiling as kindly as she could. "What if I make a seven-layer dip that'll last the whole weekend?" she asks. "Guacamole. Sour cream. The works."
Gabe softens a bit, then turns back to face Sally. "So, this money for your trip . . . it comes out of your clothes budget, right?"
"Yes, honey," Sally replies.
"And you won't take my car anywhere but there and back."
"We'll be very careful."
Gabe scratches his double chin. "Maybe if the girl hurries up with the seven-layer dip . . . and if the boy apologizes for interrupting my poker game."
Maybe if I kick you in your soft spot, Percy thinks. And make you sing soprano for a week.
"I'm sorry," Percy mutters. "I'm really sorry I interrupted your incredibly important power game. Please go back to it right now."
Gabe's eyes narrow. His tiny brain is probably trying to detect the sarcasm in my statement, Percy thinks.
"Yeah, whatever," Gabe decides; he goes back to his game.
"Thank you, Percy," Sally says. "Once we get to Montauk, we'll talk more about...whatever you've forgotten to tell me, okay?"
For a moment, (Y/n) can see anxiety in her mother's eyes, but then her smile returns, and (Y/n) figures that she must've been mistaken.
. . .
An hour later, the three are ready to leave.
Gabe takes a break from his poker game long enough to watch (Y/n) and Percy lug the bags to his car. He keeps griping and groaning about losing her and (Y/n)'s cooking - and more important, his '78 Camaro - for the whole weekend.
"Not a scratch on this car, brain boy," Gabe warns Percy as he loads the last bag into the car. "Not one little scratch."
Like I'd be the one driving. I'm fourteen, Percy thinks.
Watching Gabe lumbers back towards the apartment building, Percy gets so mad that he does something he can't explain. As Gabe reaches the door, Percy makes the hand gesture he'd seen Grover made on the bus, a soft of warding-off-evil gesture, a clawed hand over his heart, then a shoving movement towards Gabe. The screen door slams so hard it whacks him the the butt and sends him flying up the staircase as if he'd been shot from a cannon.
. . .
(Y/n)'s POV
Our rental cabin is on the south shore, way out at the tip of Long Island. It is a little pastel box with faded curtains, half sunken into the dunes. There's always sand in the sheets, spiders in the cabinets, and most of the time the sea is too cold to swim in.
I loved the place.
Mom, Percy, and I had been going ever since Percy and I'd been a baby. Mom had been coming even longer. She'd never exactly said, but I know why the beach was special to her.
It's the place where she'd met my Dad.
As we get closer to Montauk, Mom seems to grow younger, years of worry and work disappearing from her face. Her eyes turn the color of the sea.
We get there around sunset, open all the cabin's windows, and go through the usual cleaning routine.
Mom, Percy, and I walk on the beach, feed blue corn-chips to the seagulls, and munch on blue jelly beans, blue saltwater taffy, and all the other free samples Mom had brought home from work.
I guess maybe I should explain all the blue food.
Gabe had once told Mom that there was no such thing. They had had this fight, which had seemed like a really small think at the time, but ever since, Mom went out of her way to eat blue. She baked blue birthday cakes, mixed blueberry smoothies, bought blue-corn tortilla chips, and brought home blue candy from the shop. This - along with keeping her maiden name, Jackson, rather than calling herself Mrs. Ugliano - is proof that she isn't totally suckered by Gabe. She did have a rebellious streak, just like Percy.
When it gets dark, we make a fire. We roast hot dogs and marshmallows. Mom tells Percy and me stories about when she was a kid, back before her parents had died in the plane crash. She tells us about the books she wanted to write someday, when she had enough money to quit the candy shop.
Eventually, it seems that Percy gets the nerve to ask about what is always on our minds whenever we come to Montauk - our father. Mom's eyes go all misty. I figure she would tell us the same things she always did, but neither Percy or I ever got tired of hearing them.
"He was kind, Percy," Mom replies. "Tall, handsome, and powerful. But gentle too, like you, (Y/n)." Mom says and I soften. "You have his black hair, Percy, and you both share his green eyes.
Mom fishes a blue jelly bean out of her candy bag. "I wish he could see you two. He would be so proud."
I wonder how she could say that when I'm the girl who cowers from her stepfather. The girl who hides in her room to get away from said stepfather.
"How old were we?" Percy asks, pulling me from my thoughts. "I mean . . . when he left?"
Mom watches the flames. "He was only with me for one summer, Percy. Right here at this beach. This cabin."
"But . . . he knew us as babies."
"No, honey," Mom replies. "He knew I was expecting twins, but he never met you. He had to leave before you were born."
I try to square that with the fact that I seem to remember . . . something about my father. A warm glow, maybe a smile.
Percy and I had always assumed that our father had known us as babies. Mom had never said it outright, but still, I'd felt that it must be true. Now, to be told that he'd never even seen us . . .
I feel angry at my father. Maybe it is stupid, but I resent him for going on that ocean voyage, for not having the guts to marry Mom.
"Are you going to send me away again?" Percy asks. "To another boarding school?"
Mom pulls a marshmallow from the fire.
"I don't know, honey," her voice is heavy. "I think . . . I think we'll have to do something."
"Because you don't want me around?" Percy says and I flinch, avoiding both his and Mom's gazes.
I glance up to see that Mom's eyes had welled up with tears. "Oh, Percy, no. I - I have to, honey. For your own good. I have to send you away."
"But you never send her away," Percy says and I look up, eyes wide with surprise.
Mom looks at Percy, eyes wide with shock.
Finally she says, "I have to keep both of you away from each other as much as possible. I thought you'd finally be safe."
"I tried to keep you as close to me as I could," Mom says. "They told me it was a mistake. But there's only one other option, Percy, (Y/n) - the place your father wanted to send you two. And I just . . . I just can't stand to do it."
"Our father wanted us to go to a special school?" I ask.
"Not a school," Mom replies. "A summer camp."
My head spins. Why would my dad - who hadn't even stayed around to see me and Percy be born - talk to Mom about a summer camp?
"I'm sorry, (Y/n)," Mom says, seeing the look in my eyes. "But I can't talk about it. I - I couldn't send you two to that place. It might mean saying goodbye to you for good."
"For good?" Percy asks. "But if it's only a summer camp . . ."
Mom turns towards the fire, and I know from her expression, that if we asked any more questions, she would start to cry.

The Castle Operation
Alright I posted it on AO3 like one hour ago and I’m already overwhelmed by the comments you guys are crazy but I’m so grateful. I was feeling very insecure about my writing and all the comments made me smile like an idiot.
Find it on AO3.
Christopher sighs as he chews on his pencil.
This Math exercise is hard and he’s been working on it for more than half an hour. It’s a long time, and if he gets stuck any longer then he won’t have time to play video games.
Buck is usually the one to help him with his homework. Especially Math. His father is very bad at Math and Buck is not very good at it either but they usually manage to get through it together, as a team.
You and I make a great team – that’s what Buck told him a few weeks ago and Christopher doesn’t understand why he’s not around anymore. He used to be there all the time after his dad got hurt. He used to make breakfast and drive him to school and help him with his homework and read him stories just before nighttime. But that was before.
He’s alone again with his dad now. And Christopher loves his dad. In fact, if you’d ask him he’d say he’s the best dad in the world, for sure. But he thought that maybe this time Buck would have stayed. He thought that maybe his dad would want him to stay.
But his dad never asked.
Christopher presses his small hands over his face and rubs his eyes. He’s tired and he wants to sit on the couch and play video games and talk with his friends but he’s stuck on this chair because of this stupid Math exercise. He doesn’t even like Math.
“What’s going on in there?” Carla asks after a few seconds. She sits down next to him and Christopher drops his pencil on the table.
“I don’t like Math.” Christopher only answers, shrugging his shoulders. He raises his eyes and sighs when he realizes it’s only 5pm. He still has to wait two hours for his dad to come back and maybe then he can ask him if Buck can come too, for a movie night.
“Why do I feel like there’s something more than that?” Carla asks, raising her eyebrows. Christopher doesn’t like it when she does that. She always knows when something is bothering him and he can never lie to her. He tried before but it never worked.
“I miss Bucky.” Christopher says, slowly.
“Oh honey I miss him too.” Carla answers. “But you know he’s not far, right?”
“I know.” Christopher whispers. “But he used to be around all the time. He used to be around all the time and now he’s gone.” Christopher adds, taking the pen to scribble on his notebook. “I don’t understand why Dad didn’t ask him to stay.”
“Did you want him to stay?” Carla asks, smiling.
“Of course I did.” Christopher frowns. “I want him to stay forever.” He clarifies. Because he thinks it’s important, for people to know that Buck belongs here with them. Not in his own flat. Not with anyone else. Here . With him and his dad. “And I know dad wants that, too. He didn’t ask him to stay but I know he wanted to. I’m not stupid. He’s always happy when he’s around. He smiles all the time and sometimes he looks at him the same way he used to look at Mom.”
“Oh, Christopher.” Carla says, wrapping her arms around his back. Christopher sniffles and hides his face on her chest, closing his eyes. “You’re too smart for your own good.”
“So you see it too, then?” Christopher moves away from Carla’s embrace and adjusts his glasses on his nose.
“I do.” Carla agrees. “Very much so.” She adds. “But maybe your dad hasn’t seen it yet.”
“But that’s not possible.” Christopher shakes his head. Surely, his dad has seen it, too. His dad notices everything. He always does.
“Maybe it’s easier for us to tell because we can see it from a distance.” Carla explains and Christopher frowns.
“What do you mean?”
“You remember the Lego castle you built with Buck?” Christopher nods and smiles. It was a very big castle and Buck and him had taken an entire afternoon to build it. It was very complicated and messy and his dad had even said they could take some snacks upstairs in his room so that they could be done before diner. But it was a long time ago and Christopher doesn’t understand what it has to do with anything.
“I do.” He says, looking down at his hands.
“And when you stand very close to it, you can’t really see everything all at once, can you?” She asks and Christopher nods again. It’s true – he thinks. He usually has to move his eyes a lot if he wants to see the whole thing. “Maybe you can see one of the windows very well, or even a tower or the drawbridge.” She continues. “But the only way to see it all, the only way to see the whole castle is if you stand a bit further.”
“But I don’t want Buck to go anywhere.” Christopher argues.
“And he’s not.” Carla reassures him, ruffling his hair. “He’s not going anywhere. He’s always gonna be there, Christopher. But maybe that’s why you can see it so clearly and your dad doesn’t.”
“Because I can see the whole castle.” Christopher smiles. “That’s okay, then.” He says.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” He nods. “Dad can only see the drawbridge.” He says. “But I’m gonna help him see the whole castle, too.”
                                                      ---
Christopher spends a lot of time thinking about it. Whether it be in his bed, on the couch, in the play-yard or even in his classroom. He knows he’s supposed to listen to what his teacher is saying but he just can’t help it.
It’s only for a few minutes though, and Buck told him the other day that sometimes it’s important to take small breaks in order to be more focused on the problem at hand afterwards. And that’s what he does, taking small breaks, thinking about something else than what the teacher is saying.
So really, he’d say it’s even a win-win situation. He gets to reflect on the Helping Dad to See the Whole Castle situation and he’s then more concentrated on his exercises.
It’s only two weeks after his conversation that he comes up with a plan. A very good plan – he thinks. He’s not exactly sure it’s going to work out but he owes it to his dad to at least try, right? His dad’s happiness is at stake so the least he can do is give him a little push in the right direction.
The plan comes to him one day when he’s seated at the table inside the fire station, drawing a picture for Buck. Hen and Chim are comfortably seated on the couch next to him and Uncle Bobby and Buck are in the kitchen, cooking mac and cheese for the whole team. Christopher can hear them talking but he’s much more focused on his dad.
Because his dad is leaning against the fridge and he’s looking at Buck again, with the same expression he used to look at his mom with. He’s smiling and his eyes are so bright Christopher honestly thinks the whole thing is ridiculous. Surely his dad must know he’s in love with Bucky.
And that’s when he hears them. Hen and Chim. They probably both think Christopher is too engrossed on his drawing to notice they’re talking but he can hear them loud and clear.
“When do you think he’ll finally realize?” Chim asks, his voice low, almost whispering.
“I have no idea.” Hen answers. “But it better be soon because you and I both know Buck’s never gonna make the first move.”
Christopher frowns. First move? But to do what? He thinks. From the way they’re talking in hushed voices, he knows it must be important and so he keeps on drawing and listens carefully to the rest of the conversation. They seem very serious. Which Christopher decides is weird. They’re usually always laughing and sharing jokes but this time he can feel it’s more important.
“You know for a while I really thought it was one-sided.” Chimney says.
“Well you know Eddie. He’s never been very vocal about these kind of things.”
“I mean does he need to?” Chim asks. “I mean, look at him!” He adds, louder this time.
Christopher turns his head until his eyes fall on his dad again. He’s still in the kitchen but this time he’s whispering something in Buck’s ear, his hand holding Buck’s arm. They’re both laughing, and that makes Christopher smile. No one makes his dad happier than Buck does. Except him, of course.
Then his dad taps Buck on the back of his neck with his hand and Buck only sticks his tongue out.
“Oh come on!” Hen exclaims and Christopher almost jumps in his seat. “I swear to god if they don’t come to their senses soon, I’m locking them in the closet downstairs.” She adds. “They’re literally acting like a married couple, Chim!”
And Christopher’s smile only gets a bit bigger at her words.
They see it too – he realizes.
They see the whole castle.
And maybe that’s what he needs to do. Maybe that’s what his dad needs.
And so he takes another piece of paper his dad brought with them and starts writing:
Castle operation:
Start telling people about it. But who?
My teacher.
The nice lady of the supermarket.
Uncle Bobby and Aunt Athena?
Abuela.
Find out if Bucky knows about the Castle.
Wait for dad to see it too.
                                                         ---
The first people Christopher tells are Uncle Bobby and Aunt Athena. He’s standing up on a stool and he’s helping Bobby making soup from scratch. Chicken soup. His dad’s favorite because they’re celebrating him coming back to active duty tonight and Christopher wants everything to be perfect.
He stirs the soup with the big spatula Bobby gave him a few minutes ago and smiles at the scent. It smells just like when his Abuela does it. That’s why Christopher knows it’s gonna be good.
“Where’s Bucky?” Christopher eventually asks after a few seconds. He usually always helps in the kitchen and he can’t see him anywhere.
“He’s talking to your dad in the garden.” Bobby answers, pointing at the glass window. “Look, right there.” He adds, making Christopher look up.
And here he is. Buck. He’s standing next to his dad but Christopher can instantly see that something is wrong. He seems sad. His dad seems sad, too. He’s running his hands through his hair and Christopher knows his dad always does that when he’s nervous about something. It doesn’t happen often but he always notices it.
Christopher tries to keep his eyes on the soup but his curiosity eventually gets the best of him. He darts his eyes towards his dad again and that’s when he sees it. His dad takes a few steps backwards but Buck catches his wrist before he has the chance to walk away.
Christopher squints and even from the kitchen, he knows what Buck is saying must be very important because he looks at his dad in the eye and the next second he wraps his arms around his shoulders and gives him a hug. He even kisses him on the hair and Christopher thinks that’s obviously something he needs to write down on his Castle Operation journal tonight.
“My dad and Bucky are in love.” He only says and doesn’t miss the smile Uncle Bobby shares with Aunt Athena who just joined them in the kitchen.
“You think so?” Uncle Bobby asks, tasting the soup with a spoon.
“I don’t think, I know.” Christopher clarifies. “They just don’t see it yet.” He adds. “But that’s okay. I’ll make sure they do.”
“You do that, kid.” Athena says with a laugh, ruffling his hair.
                                                     ---
Christopher is lost in the supermarket. It’s a big one and he can’t find Buck. They were doing groceries shopping in order to surprise his dad and cook him his favorite dessert and the next thing Christopher knew he was alone, looking for Buck.
It’s okay, though. Christopher is not scared. It’s not the first time he gets lost in here and it already happened a few times with his dad. He would usually roam around the shelves and look at his right, and then his left, until his eyes fall on Buck but this time, he decides to choose a more direct approach.
He thinks that’s a perfect opportunity to tell the nice lady about Buck. Him and his dad always go to her checkout because she’s always giving him a lollipop. He walks away from the refrigerated shelves and heads for the entrance of the store.
She’s here, at the checkout 6 as always and there’s no-one paying or placing their items on the conveyor belt.
“Christopher!” She exclaims with a smile. “You’re here with your dad again? Where is he?”
“I’m here with Bucky!” Christopher says excitedly. “He’s my second dad. We wanted to buy chocolate chips because we’re going to do a brownie for my dad. It’s his favorite dessert. But I lost Buck. I don’t know where he is.”
“Do you want me to call him with the loudspeaker?” She asks and Christopher nods vigorously. He thinks that’s en excellent idea. Like that, so many people will know that Buck is his dad. It doesn’t matter whether they know him or not. Christopher doesn’t care. In fact, he would happily scream it on the rooftops if it meant his dad would finally realize he’s in love with Buck.
“Christopher Diaz is waiting for his dad next to Checkout six.” She announces and Christopher smiles big at her words. “Alright Christopher, which one do you want today?” She asks, pointing at the bowl filled with lollipops.
“Cherry!”
“Cherry it is, then.” She says, handing it to him. He’s about to thank her when-
“Christopher!” Buck exclaims, rushing towards him, his eyes big, his face wrinkled in concern. “I looked everywhere for you, buddy.” He adds.
“That’s okay Bucky, I was right there.” Christopher says.
“Another lollipop?” He sighs, smiling at the nice lady. “God, you’ve already eaten at least six of these cookies this afternoon, your dad’s gonna kill me.”
“Well he doesn’t need to know… Does he?” Christopher asks cheekily and Buck laughs.
“You know what? You’re absolutely right. Let’s keep it a secret, yeah?” He asks. “Now come on, let’s find these chocolate chips, alright? We don’t wanna be late to surprise your dad.”
                                                          ---
“Goodnight, superman.” Buck whispers a few hours later, kissing him on his forehead.
It’s late and Christopher is tired but he knows his dad is in the shower and he’s pretty sure now is the best time to figure out if Buck is also seeing the Castle for what it really is. And so he just says it.
“Buck.” He calls him, waiting for him to sit back on his bed to continue. “Do you love my dad?” He asks and watches Buck as he opens his eyes wide, his mouth agape. He seems surprised. But Christopher doesn’t look away.
“Hum I- Of course I love him buddy, he’s my best-friend.” He says. “After you, of course.”
“That’s not what I mean.” Christopher insists, sitting up straight on his bed. He rubs his eyes with his hands and holds back a yawn. “I’m asking you if you’re in love with him.” He clarifies.
Buck doesn’t answer anything. He stays very quiet and for a few seconds Christopher thinks that maybe he didn’t hear him. He’s about to repeat the question but then Buck lets out a small laugh and looks down at his hands, like he’s scared.
“Would-would that be a problem?” Buck asks, meeting his gaze. “If I said that I was?” He asks. “In love with your dad, that is.” He adds. “Would that be okay?”
“Of course.” Christopher only answers, frowning. He doesn’t understand why Buck needs to ask him that question.
“Then I- yeah.” Buck admits. “I am. I’m in love with your dad.” He smiles. That makes Christopher smiles too and he nods as he wraps up warmly in his blanket.
“So you see the castle, too.” Christopher states, his eyes watching the lego set standing in the corner of his room.
“The castle?” Buck tilts his head with a confused smile on his face.
“You and dad.” Christopher explains, his voice tired. “You guys are the Castle.” He says. “Carla said I could see it because I was standing further away.” He adds. “She said my dad was too close and that’s why he couldn’t see it. But I don’t think she was right.”
“No?” Buck encourages him, running his hand through Christopher’s curls.
“No. I think he’s exactly in the right place.” He goes on. “He’s just too scared to see it.” His eyes are closed now. But he pushes through the fatigue and says the next few words anyway. He needs to stay awake. At least only for a few more minutes. Because this conversation is too important.
“And why do you think he’s scared to see it?” Buck asks, curious.
“Because he’s afraid it might break if he gets too close.” He says. “So he doesn’t look at it. He doesn’t touch it either. Maybe he pretends it isn’t there, too. Like that, he’s sure it can’t break.”
Christopher falls asleep. But he stills hears Buck’s answer.
“Or maybe he just thinks there’s no Castle to look at in the first place.”
There are two last thoughts crossing Christopher’s mind before he lets himself fall completely into Morpheus’ arms.
Buck definitely knows about the Castle. He’s just afraid his dad thinks it doesn’t exist.
Adults are too messy and complicated. Being a kid is easier.
                                                      ---
Christopher is at his Abuela's with his dad. He’s sitting on the carpet in the living-room, his Lego bricks scattered around him. He’s trying to build the fire station but it turns out to be much more complicated than he expected it to be.
His Abuela and his dad are in the kitchen and Christopher isn’t planning on eavesdropping because he knows it’s a bad thing but his name suddenly comes up in the conversation and if what they’re saying concerns him then it must mean he has the right to listen, right? It only makes sense.
“So, is Christopher excited about his summer camp?” His Abuela says.
“Yeah I think so.” His dad answers and Christopher nods vigorously even though they can’t see him. His dad is right. He is very excited. All his friends are going to be there and he knows he’s gonna have the best of time. He’s just afraid not to have the time to make his dad see the Castle before he goes. Because school ends in a week and then it’s only two days before the summer camp starts. It’s not much time and Christopher already tried to make a lot of allusions about the Buck situation in front of his dad but he’s afraid his dad might need a lot more help than he initially thought.
“It’s gonna be good for him.” His abuela answers.
“Who gave you flowers?” His dad asks, pointing at the stargazer bouquet placed on the table.
“Your boy brought them to me this morning.” She says and Christopher frowns. Your boy? Is she maybe talking about B-
“He’s not my-" His dad starts but marks a pause. “Buck brought you flowers?” He asks and Christopher’s smile only gets a bit bigger.
“He did. I needed to change a bulb on my bedroom ceiling light but I didn’t trust myself to do it.” She says and Christopher thinks it’s very nice of Buck to have come help his Abuela, like he does with him every day and like he did with his dad after he got hurt. He’s always taking good care of his family and if you’d ask Christopher, he would say that’s probably the reason why he loves him so much.
“So you called Buck?” His dad asks incredulously. “Why didn’t you call me? I would have come.”
“Oh I would you would have, Eddito.” She answers and pats his dad on the cheek a few times. “But you were already busy with Christopher’s medical appointment." She says. "Besides, Buck was already supposed to come so I could give him the tamales recipe.”
Chris opens his eyes wide and whirls his head around towards his Abuela, his Lego set long forgotten.
His Abuela was very secretive about her recipes. Especially the tamales one. Christopher knew her own dad taught her how to cook and she always refuses to share the recipes with anyone who wasn’t family. Even Miss Flores didn’t have the recipes privileges. This was very sacred. And if Buck could have them then it could only mean one thing: His Abuela definitely knows about the Castle too.
“You-” His dad says but stops mid-sentence. He seems very surprised, just as much as Christopher. “You shared that recipe with him?” He asks. “I thought- I thought it was only reserved f-”
“Only reserved for family?” His Abuela cuts in. “Eddie, are you really telling me this boy is not family? After everything he’s done for y-”
“No, no I know.” His dad says. “And he is.” He adds. “I just-”
“You just what?” His abuela asks. “You know, I never really understood why you wasted your time with that girl.” She continues. She’s talking about Miss Flores – Christopher thinks, sticking two Lego bricks together to pretend he’s still very engrossed in what he's doing – but really all his attention is focused on their discussion.
“Ana?” His dad asks, his eyebrows raised. “What about her? I thought you liked h-”
“I did.” His Abuela answers. Christopher did, too. She was very nice, and she was always helping him with his homework. But Buck was Buck. Nobody would ever measure up to him. Nobody could ever measure up to him “She was a very nice woman. But I knew it wouldn’t last. Not as long as Buck was there.”
“Abuela, I-”
“Edmundo, this boy is a ray of sunshine. Agradezco a Jesus que lo encontraste todos los dias.” She says. “Es perfecto para ti y sé que lo amas.”
“He’s too good for me, Abuela.” His dad admits and Christopher frowns.
“That’s not true.” He says in a whisper even if he knows his dad can’t hear him.
“You deserve nice things, Edmundo.” Abuela concludes, patting his dad on the cheek once again. “Don’t forget that.”
“I wish you could see the whole Castle.” Christopher tells him later when his dad tucks him in.
“The whole Castle?” His dad asks, his smile confused. “What do you mean, mijo?”
“I can’t tell you, yet.” Christopher says, closing his eyes. “You need to figure it out on your own."
                                                        ---
It’s the last day of school and Christopher is running out of time. Buck hasn’t spent a single night with them this week and his dad seems sadder than usual. Or maybe not sad – Christopher thinks, but distracted. He always has this faraway look in his eyes, like he’s thinking of something very important but he can’t make a decision.
Christopher wishes he could help but he knows his dad doesn’t really like to talk about himself and how he feels. And so he observes him quietly from afar, trying to find ways to make him feel better. That’s why he convinced his dad to invite Buck for a movie night after school. Because there’s no one who can cheer him up quite like the way Bucky does.
He’s seated on his chair and he’s drawing a picture of himself with Buck and his dad. He’s been drawing a lot of pictures just like this one for a few weeks because he will be away in that summer camp for Buck’s birthday and so he decided to do a drawing for each day he spends without him to make up for it.
“That’s a nice drawing you did there, Chris.” His teacher says, squatting down next to his table.
“That’s for my second dad.” Christopher nods. “For his birthday.”
“Oh so that’s the famous Buck I keep hearing about.” She says, pointing at the person standing next to his dad.
“Yes, that’s him.” Christopher nods excitedly. “He’s the best.”
“I’m sure he is.” His teacher agrees and turns her head when someone knocks on the door. “Oh, looks like your dad’s here.” She says. Christopher whirls his head around and smiles wildly at his dad who starts conversing with his teacher.
“Are you and your husband going to join us for the end of year picnic tomorrow?” She asks and Christopher smiles cheekily while putting his stuff back in his schoolbag.
“My- my husband?” His dad asks. He sounds very confused.
“Your partner?” His teacher corrects herself. “I’m sorry, from the way Chris talks about his Bucky, I assumed you guys were married.”
“Uh no we’re not- we’re not married. He’s… He’s just my f-” His dad starts but marks a pause. “We’re not married.” He says again.
“My apologies. But you should bring him anyway.” Ms. Walker says. “We’d love to meet him.”
“Uh yeah I- I’m sure he’d like that.” His dad says with a smile.
Christopher follows him out of the classroom and to the car. He fastens his seat-belt and takes the book about space Buck bought for him a few weeks ago. He’s still not done reading it and he really wants to finish it before summer camp so he can discuss it with him.
“Christopher.” His dad calls him from the driver seat. “Why does your teacher think Buck and I are married?” He asks. Christopher was scared his dad would be upset but he only sounds curious. Confused, too.
“Because I told her he was my second dad.” Christopher answers matter-of-factly.
“Why… Why did you do that?”
“Because he is.” Christopher sighs, pressing his hands over his face.
Christopher thinks his dad is going to say something else but he stays very quiet instead. The whole drive is silent until he parks the car on the driveway where Buck is already waiting for them in his truck. He waves at Christopher excitedly and engulfs him into a hug as soon as he’s out of the car.
“Buck!” Christopher exclaims, his smile big. “You’re here early.”
“It’s never too early for my favorite Diaz boy.” He answers, ruffling his hair.
Once inside the house, Christopher lets go of his school bag, takes off his shoes and sits at the table. Buck serves him cereals with milk, accompanied by a glass of orange juice. His dad is seated at the table but he’s still very quiet and for a few seconds Christopher is afraid he might have done something stupid but then Buck slides a second bowl filled with cereals and milk in front of him and his dad smiles softly at him and rolls his eyes.
“What?” Buck defends himself. “I know you’re a sucker for cereals when you’re all cranky.”
“I’m not cranky!”
“Right.” Buck answers, raising his eyebrows, unimpressed. “Eat your cereals, Diaz.”
“Yeah dad.” Christopher repeats. “Eat your cereals.”
Christopher spends the next half hour telling them about his school day and then Buck tells him all about a documentary he saw a few nights ago about the Egyptian Pyramids. Christopher thinks it’s fascinating and after making both his dads promise they would take him in the Egyptian Museum in San Jose, he sits down on the sofa and goes on reading his book about Space.
“Bucky.” He still says after a while.
“Yeah, buddy?”
“I have a drawing for you. Wait here.” Christopher answers. He stands up and opens his school bag, taking the drawing he did in class while he was waiting for his dad to pick him up. He wanted to give it to Buck just before leaving for his summer camp but he feels like maybe it needs to be given now. Maybe that’s the only way for his dad to see the Castle.
Because it is . A Castle. Chrstopher drew a big one at the center, with him, his dad and Buck standing next to it, all smiling.
Christopher gives it to him and he can instantly see a soft smile breaking in on Buck’s face. His dad is watching too over his shoulders, and when Buck looks up at him with a knowing look on his face, Christopher smiles too. He knew Buck would understand.
“It’s… It’s the Castle.” Buck says. Christopher can see that his eyes are filled with tears and so he wraps his small arms around Buck’s shoulders.
“You know about this?” His dad asks after a few seconds, his eyebrows raised in confusion. “You know about the Castle metaphors?” He add. “I mean he actually explained it to you?”
“Uh… Maybe?” Buck says, apologetically.
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“Well I’m not sure you’re quite there yet.” Buck answers and Christopher nods sadly.
“What do you mean I’m not quite there yet?” His dad asks, exasperated. “Can you both stop talking in riddle and tell me what’s going on?”
Christopher signs and looks down at his hands. Maybe this has gone off long enough – he thinks. Maybe it’s time to tell him directly. Maybe that’s what his dad needs, for Christopher and Buck to tell him that’s it’s okay, that no Castle is too big for him. And so he takes the sheet of paper and turns it the other way, revealing what’s written on the back.
“Me and my two dads.”
“That’s the castle, dad.” Christopher finally says. “You’re the castle. You and Bucky.”
“And you too.” Buck adds with a smile and Christopher just nods.
“Hum I- I still don’t get it.” His dad admits and Buck lets out a small laugh. But Christopher can see he’s scared too. He knows it because he doesn’t look at his dad in the eye. He looks down at his hands instead.
“Of course you don’t.” Buck still says with a smile.
“It’s our family.” Christopher clarifies. “And Buck is a part of it.”
“Of course he’s a part of it Chris, but what does it have to do with anyt- Oh.”
“Buck’s been inside the Castle for a very long time, dad.” Christopher explains. “I thought you knew it too. But then you started dating Miss Flores and it wasn’t fair to Bucky.” He adds. “I- I’ve never been mad at you for dating again, dad. I was mad at you because I thought that Bucky was the only one with the key to our Castle but then she was there and he was gone. I felt like you were replacing him and I didn’t like that.”
“Christopher, I-” His dad starts but marks a pause, letting his eyes fall on Buck for a few seconds. Buck is still very quiet and his eyes are bright with tears and they’re still fixed on the few words written on the back of the drawing. “Why didn’t you tell me?” His dad asks.
“I tried.” Christopher says with a small voice. “And Miss Flores was nice.” He adds. “She was nice and I liked her very much but she was-”
“She was never Buck.” His dad finishes for him and Buck whirls his head around to look at his dad in the eye. “What? He’s a smart kid.” His dad says.
“The smartest.” Buck chokes up and tears are rolling down his face. But that’s okay because his dad places both of his hands on his cheeks and wipes them with his thumbs.
“Buck was scared you thought there was no Castle to see.” Christopher explains but frowns when that only makes Bucky cry harder.
“Of course there’s a Castl- Dios.” His dad says, pinching the bridge of his nose with his fingers. “Buck.” He goes on. “Evan.” He adds, and Buck finally looks up at him. “Of course there’s a Castl- god, I’ve had enough with these Castle references.” He says, and Buck laughs through his tears. “Of course you’re a part of this family, Buck. You always have. Always will.”
“Always.” Christopher agrees, placing his small hand over Buck’s. “You should kiss him now, dad.”
“I should, right?” His dad says cheekily, cradling Buck’s chin with his right hand and pressing their lips together. Only for a few seconds, though. Otherwise that’s just too gross – Christopher thinks. His dad then whispers something along the line of Christopher was right and you do have the keys to my heart and Christopher doesn’t really understand what that means but Bucky throws his head backwards, laughing, so Christopher only guesses his dad must be doing something good.
“You didn’t just say that, Diaz.” Buck says. “That’s sappy as hell, even for you.” He adds and his dad taps him on the back of his neck again, still smiling.
Christopher eventually looks away though and focuses on his book about Space once again because his job here is done:
The Castle Operation is officially a success.

“Jesus fuck” you quickly shuffled inside your front door escaping the cold air outside. You had hands cupped over your mouth, blowing warm air into them.
You’re father tossed your bag by the staircase as you turned the corner to the kitchen.
“Ayyy she’s back!” Negan said with a mouthful of chip and guac that he preparing.
“Hey” you waved at him before your mom swooped in to give you a tight hug.
You embraced her, “Hi mom! Missed you.”
“You have no idea!” She replied before releasing you and holding both your cold hands.
“Hey, Frankie this the one?” You heard a fimilar voice coming from the steps.
It was Diana, holding the velvet green table cloth your family used every year around this time.
She gave your hands a squeeze, before attending to Diana.
“Yes, that’s the one” your mom answered, reaching to take it from her.
“Diana this is Eddie, you’ve always just missed her”
“Diana is Negan’s girlfriend” your mom added.
“Very Nice to meet you honey” she said smiling and giving you a soft handshake “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
I’m sure you have
“Nice to meet you too” your cheeks flushed red. Luckily that could easily be explained by the weather.
You glanced over at Negan who was sipping on his mug to cover his smirk.
“What time is this game on?” Your dad indirectly asked Negan flipping through the channels.
“Uh, I think 7” he responded
“Oh, we got a good two hours then.”
“Alright, I’m gonna go get cleaned up. I’ll be back” you announced.
“Need help with your bag?” Your mom asked not wanting you to do a thing while you were here home.
“Nah, I got it”
“I’ll help you Eddie” Diana offered
“No no no it’s okay” you tried to deflect her help
Your words had to effect as he picked up your duffle and gestured with her arm for you to go up the steps first.
You walked up the steps, heart pumping extra hard, in sync with your steps.
On the last step the tip of your shoe caught the edge of the step and you tripped. Your quick successive steps prevented you from falling.
“Whoa, watch it!” Diana laughed trailing behind you, duffle over her shoulder.
“This is my room here” you walked in first
Diana set your bag down on your bed looking around the room, at your drawings pinned to your wall.
You began taking off your winter coat.
“I got you” Diana snuck up behind you, helping slip your arms through the sleeves
Feeling her close behind sent tingles from your neck to your toes.
“Thanks” you responded while she reached in you closet to put it on a hanger.
You shuffled through your closet looking for a clean shirt. You landed on a thick black tee.
You stared at it momentarily and turned to Diana.
“I’m gonna change...” you hinted that you needed some privacy
She reached for the hanger in your hand, “So, change...”
You reluctantly gave up the article of clothing.
It felt like an eternity reaching for the hem of your shirt before pulling it through your head and shoulders. You immediately had goosebumps, partly due to the change in temperature, partly because you were in front of Diana for the first time in months and already topless.
In the time you undressed your upper half Diana was standing behind you again. You became aware of her presence when she pulled your hips back into hers, lightly grinding.
She gently bit your upper trap as she nibbled towards your neck. You turned your face towards her. Once your lips met her tongue slipped into your mouth.
It was far too short. You sighed through your nostrils as Diana removed herself from the kiss, leaving you hot and bothered.
“Get dressed” she said handing you your un-hung shirt. She softly patted your hip before stepping out.
Fuck. Fuck Diana. Fuck Negan. Fuck Christmas.
You hated how they could cleverly peel back your layers until you were nothing but nerves, reacting to any stimulus, seeking pleasure. In less than 5min with them you were already pent up, release on your mind.
I’ll be quick - no there’s not enough time, you began debating with yourself, just do it. You’re wasting time. They’ll know - no they won’t.
Fuck it.
You locked the door and took care of yourself.
You headed back down right in time, as the table was now set up for dinner.
Negan and Diana were seated together across from your parents, your father in front of Negan and your mother across Diana. You sat the head of the table. Between your mom and Diana.
Dinner felt normal despite the secret affair.
You updated everyone on your semester and future plans. Negan cracked jokes with your dad, you added zingers to them. Diana asked questions about you, her attempt to get to know you was executed perfectly. She knew how to work a conversation.
Diana occasionally brushed her leg onto yours. Turning you on, you to shifted in your seat every time. Amusing her.
“You alright honey” your mom asked, noticing your movements.
“Uh, yeah, my back just a little locked up from the flight”
“Maybe Diana can help you out. She’s a PT y’know” your mom offered Diane’s services.
“No no wouldn’t want to mooch of her. I’ll be alright” you responded
“It’s no problem Eddie. I can loosen you up just say the word” she said before taking a bite of her food.
“I’ll be fine” you kindly reassured them.
Conversations on conversation led to Negan and Diana making an announcement.
“With Eddie graduating this year, you fine folks celebrating 25 years of marriage, we want to add to the good” Negan started.
“You’re pregnant?” Your mom jumped to conclusions excited for her friends.
“Your are outside your mind” Diana laughed chugging the remainder of her wine.
“No not that” Negan led to the announcement, “We’re getting hitched”
“Yay!” Your mom hopped of her seat give Diana and Negan a hug, almost putting both of them into a choke hold.
“Congrats man” Your dad shook Negan’s hand across the table and raised his glass to Diana before taking a sip
“Congratulations guys” you smiled, genuinely happy for them
“Thanks Eddie” the couple said together
“So what do you say Klause, plan my Bacholeor party?”
“Fuck yes” your dad grinned happy for his buddy
“Wait does this mean I’m your best man too?”
“I wouldn’t do that do you haha! My brother is, but he can’t plan for shit”
Diane and your mom having a conversation of their own.
“Frankie, it would mean so much if you were one of my bridesmaids?”
“Of course” she accepted.
“You guys decided on a date?” Your mom asked
“We’re thinking in late May of next year”
__________
After dinner you all were scattered in the living room watching the game.
“You said you’re studying graphic design right Eddie?” Diana asked during halftime
“That is correct”
“Do you mind if consult with you regarding invitations?”
“Yeah, no problem. Do you have some ideas in mind?” you asked
“We do. Let me get your number before I forget”
She handed you her phone.
__________
Later that night you were about to crawl into bed when your phone buzzed on your night stand.
It was an unsaved number. Diana’s surely.
It was 2 short clips.
The first clip was Negan’s legs splayed on his bed, Diana between them sucking his dick.
Good thing your volume was on the lower end because the next clip was the backside of Diana with Negan plunging in and out of her from behind. This clip was a little longer with Negan slowing down to show is entire member exit her and shoved himself back inside.
That was the last of it. Until you saw three little dots.
The next message was an image of Negan’s cum dripping out Diana’s entrance.
You could feel wetness beginning to pool between your legs.
Three little dots
- You could’ve been here if you didn’t take care of yourself earlier
- Goodnight sweat heart
How the fuck did they know?
__________
The next morning, once your folks left for work you barged into Negan’s back door.
“What the fuck!” he yelled from the kitchen, “You scared the shit outta me kid!”
“YOU what the fuck!” You were frustrated, emotionally and sexually.
“Hahaha, didn’t enjoy the show last night?” He asked nonchalantly as he continued prepping steak in a type of sauce.
“You can’t do that! What if I opened it in front of my parents?”
“What are you really mad at? That we sent it? Or that you weren’t invited?”
Shit. I don’t know. You thought to yourself.
“That’s what I thought” Negan responded to your silence.
“Well, I’m here now” your impulse taking over. You walked to him and palmed him through his black jeans.
“Woah, Eddie...” he said softly moving his hips away from your touch, hands still in the bowl, drenched.
“I’m— I’m cooki—“ he stopped, removed his hands from the bowl and rested his wrists against the counter as you pecked your lips over the rough fabric of his pants.
“Fuck. You really wanna do this right now?”
Your eyes staring up at him, you nodded.
You stood up and pulled him by his waistband toward the living room, Negan tried to stop at the sink first to wash his hands but you yanked him away.
“Ed-“
You plopped him in the couch and got between his knees.
“Diana won’t be happy if I dirty this couch” he gestured at his sauce covered hands “she picked it out”
“Then don’t” you challenged his self-control
“And you better not touch me with those dirty hands either”
You undid his belt buckle followed by his button and zipper. Negan helped you by lifting his hips of the couch while you slid his pants to his ankles. His hands slightly in the air, careful not to stain anything.
His semi-hard member rested against his thigh. You started at his inner knee, licking and kissing your way up. You could feel his quads tense up. Once you were a peck away from his shaft your mouth went to his other inner thigh, pressing your soft lips against his hairy skin.
“Oh Eddie, you don’t want continue what you’re doing” he warned you.
“Or what? You won’t fuck me again? You won’t have your wife eat me out again?” you retaliated, in hopes to get him to realize he can’t resist you either.
You took the head of dick on your mouth. Swirling you tongue around it.
Negan’s head leaned back, finally having enough stimulation, “agh! fuck!”
You eventually started sucking him mid-way, stopping at his tip every so often. He would frequently lift his hips trying to get more of himself in your mouth.
“You want me to go deeper?” You popped off him and pumped him slowly.
Negan looked at you with some rage but also desperation.
“Yes” he said reluctantly.
You slowly put his member entirely in your mouth. Having good control on your gag reflex. Negan taking notice.
“Not gagging I see. Did your little whore ass get some practice this semester? How many guys did you ask to suck off? How many got to come in that pretty little mouth?”
You continued to take him all the way. Then you deep throated him and held yourself there.
“Oh fuck, mhmm” Negan’s orgasm building.
You slipped off him all the way. Viscous saliva linking his dick to your lips.
You brought yourself to the brink again. Holding that position.
“I’m close” Negan breathed out quietly “and you’re gonna swallow all of it.”
You removed yourself.
“Actually” you said wiping your mouth “I think you can take it from here. Or I can text your wife to finish for me.”
Negan took a frustrated breath trough his nose.
Still on your knees, hips resting on your ankles, you stared at him briefly, giving him a in a what-now-? look
He swiftly took his shirt off, staining it with his hands, but he used it as a barrier between his sauce-covered hands and your hair.
He sloppily guided your head and mouth to his member. You didn’t expect this to take this turn, but it turned you on.
You felt the urge to gag as his dick was entirely in your mouth. You tried to control it.
“Breathe” His words helped you control it a little longer.
A few gags slipped out as he continued to hold you in place. He began talking dirty to you.
“Not so experienced now are we”
“Choke on it you little slut”
“You never know your limit do you? Or do love crossing lines?”
His comments built your own arousal.
Negan was on the brink of orgasm.
“I’m gonna cum, baby” He held your head in place while his hips began thrusting upwards.
His depth became more shallow the faster he thrusted, and you appreciated the decrease in restraint he had on your head.
On his last thrust he pushed deeply and firmly brought your head down. You felt his pubic hair brush your nose.
“ughhh!” he gritted as he came.
“Swallow.” He ordered as his orgasm subsided
He slowly released the pressure he had on your head, letting you come off him. Simultaneously gulping the warm liquid.
“You swallowed it all?”
“Yes”
“Say ‘I swallowed all your cum Negan’” he firmly cupped your chin.
“I swallowed all your come Negan” you spoke through your restricted jaw.
“That’s a good girl” he released his grip.
“Now go upstairs and shower. Diana will be home any minute now, and she’ll want you clean” he said before pulling his pants up and walking to the kitchen to wash his hands.

Title: I Went to College and All I Got Was This Lousy Degree
Summary: At the start of Hange's senior year, she's told that she must tutor the ill-tempered Levi Ackerman in Biology if he wants to graduate and keep his baseball scholarship. From that point forward, she does everything she can to keep it strictly business with Levi - until they keep running into each other, everywhere. It takes a little time and some self-discovery, but eventually, she finds herself falling for that baseball boy in the midst of her college career.
chapter 1 under the cut :)
1580.
The numbers were bold against her computer screen and seemed to be burning permanently into her retinas. What was that, like, two questions? It wasn’t fair.
“What did you get this time, honey?”
She turned the laptop to face her mother, who frowned. “It’s a ten point increase, at least.”
“I wanted a perfect score,” Hange moaned. “I hate the College Board. This is some crap.”
“Well, that’s three out of three. You’ve still done better than anyone I’ve ever seen,” her mother reassured her. “Can I take these cups?”
Hange looked over her desk at the array of cups, old bowls, and soiled paper plates. “Yeah, but I want the orange one. I’ll help you bring all this down – sorry about the mess.”
“You’ve been studying hard,” her mom reassured her. “I just don’t want any roaches to be drawn in.”
The warmth from the soapy dish water was soothing on her aching hands. Ever since eight that morning, Hange had been either typing, writing, or highlighting, and when her hands weren’t in use, her eyes flew across text resulting in the typical tension headache she felt directly behind her eyes. Now that it was six, and dinner was almost ready? Done. She was done. Hange thought that senior year would be the worst year for her, but so far, junior year was setting the bar pretty high with the combination of exams, state testing, entrance exams, and college applications.
“Leave the water in the sink. I made you some veggies,” her mom told her.
Perhaps it was weird, but one of the few things that Hange enjoyed out of her mom’s cooking was vegetables. Everything else was either too bland or too salty, too mushy or nearly burnt, but her vegetables were always well seasoned and just cooked right. Going vegetarian had been easy for Hange, especially since it was pretty much all she ate at home anyways.
“Are you going to Nanaba’s after dinner still?” Her mom asked as they ate their dinner together.
“Yeah, I’ll probably sleep there tonight, if you don’t mind,” Hange replied between forkfuls of carrots. “By the way, when does dad come back?”
“Wednesday morning, so you’ll have to take the truck into school, okay? And that’s fine, just check in with me at some point. Go ahead and take the truck tonight, too.”
“Yup, gotcha,” Hange replied, finishing her plate. “Thank you for the food – I really like that new sauce you’re using.”
Her mom beamed, a rare sight for her tired face. “I used balsamic dressing in it! I knew it’d be good.”
Hange grabbed her bag from the bottom of the stairs on her way up. It was way too hefty for her plans tonight, and besides, she really didn’t need her calc II book at Nanaba’s, anyways. She packed the usual: laptop, jeans, cute shirt, a long skirt, cardigan, flats, and some pajamas. Her deodorant and perfume got haphazardly thrown in there too, along with an extra hair tie and her chargers. On last thought, Hange reached for a couple of suspiciously heavy balled-up sock pairs, throwing them in there too. Nanaba would appreciate that.
The truck keys were on the counter next to Hange’s wallet, and she clipped them onto her belt loop on the way out. Everyone in the house had ended up with her trusty carabiner trick: can’t lose your keys if they’re always attached to your pants. Her logic was that if you lose your pants somehow, you’ve got more issues than your keys.
“See ya mom!” Hange called out to the house. Her mom’s jazz music was already audible from the bedroom, and the dishes from dinner sat soaking in the sink. It was always much more laid back when her dad was out on a business trip, and a nice treat in comparison to his uptight antics.
Dusk in southern California during April was always nice – it wasn’t chilly enough to warrant a decent coat, but it was warm enough that you could get away with a dress. Sure, the daytime was utter hell, but at night, her dad’s hoodie on the passenger side of the bench seat in his truck was a welcome blanket on her lap as she drove to Nanaba’s house just fifteen minutes away.
Nanaba had been Hange’s best friend since the sixth grade, and they weren’t planning on changing that any time soon. Once upon a chilly November evening, school had just let out and they sat waiting for their parents to pick them up. Fifteen minutes passed, then half an hour, then a full hour – somehow, the two had ended up being “those kids.” You know the type. Mom fell asleep or lost track of time, child has to try their hardest to remember the house phone number, mom freaks out and arrives in a panic. In that span of an hour, the two started an inseparable bond over Pokémon Sapphire on Hange’s Gameboy Advance.
Hange let herself in with the key under the mat, making her way quietly through the house and up the stairs to Nanaba’s room. She found her with a clear plastic bonnet on her head, cross-legged at the head of the bed on her laptop, and the room reeked of chemicals. “Yo,” she announced herself, dropping her bookbag on the bed and flopping down on it. “That time of the month again?”
“You make it sound like I’ve got my period,” Nanaba complained. “What score did you get?”
“A fifteen eighty,” Hange replied. “You?”
“Fifteen thirty,” Nanaba beamed. “My highest yet!”
“Yooooo!” Hange shot up. “I’m proud of you! That’s, what, a seventy-point improvement? You studied!”
“I took your advice and had my dad buy me that SAT prep book you kept talking about. It really did work, thank you so much,” Nanaba gushed. “I feel like I can finally relax, just a little. Next weeks is finals, but in a couple hours, it’ll be Sunday, which means I’m not studying for a whole twenty-four hours.”
Hange flopped back down on the bed. “Preach. You feel like going out tonight?”
Nanaba leaned against the headboard of her bed, the plastic cap on her head crinkling against the wall. “Nah, I don’t think anything is happening. Besides, I’m doing my hair. I need you to help me touch up the sides again.”
“All right,” Hange replied. “How long do you have left?”
“Ten minutes,” Nanaba closed her laptop and stretched before swinging her legs off the side of the bed. “We’re not going out tonight, but I do have a bottle, if you wanna.”
“I brought shooters!” Hange shot back up, immediately digging through her bag and extracting the balled-up socks. “Some different ones this time, for us to try. What did you get this time?”
Nanaba walked across the room and opened her closet, pulling a bottle of liquor out from a box labelled WINTER. “Eddy orange this time. Haven’t tried it yet, but I thought we’ve abused the lemon enough.” Glass clinked as she pulled out two shot glasses: one shaped like a miniature beaker, and a normal one that simply said BOOBS.
“Beautiful,” Hange grinned. “Today we’re trying… uhh… UV Blue, Jägermeister, and this weird peanut butter whiskey stuff.”
“Did you shoplift again?” Nanaba gave her a glance. “You know, it’s one thing to buy with a fake. It’s another to shoplift entirely.”
“Does it count as shoplifting if your parents don’t drink but keep getting gifted weird alcohol gift baskets from my dad’s customers so it all just ends up sitting in the liquor cabinet for years anyways?”
“God, your dad’s job is weird.”
“Yeah, I know.”
