In honor of my birthday I want to talk about how fucked up purity culture is. Because "I am evil and bad and sexual (derogatory) and must cover up my evil bad sexual body to be less of all these things" is a horrible, terrible thing to think about yourself and others. And women who openly talk about their cycle are demonized and nobody tells you how you should be wearing cotton underwear because that's inherently sexual too, obviously, duh, and nobody is allowed to know how to care for their vagina unless they had a mother who knew because talking about it amongst yourself is also bad. Which you should've known.

Kinda obsessed with the historical context of Rise of the Guardians. Pitch wanting the Dark Ages to come back, which historically was the decline of culture and records. The Guardians rose at the same time as the Renaissance with the rise of culture, knowledge, and science. (Tooth in particular mentions that she hasn’t been out in the field for 440 years, give or take, which would put that smack dab in the middle of the Renaissance)
The way Pitch doesn’t want the world to change, the way the Guardians change in tune with the world. The way Jack, who lived in has a human in the 17th or 18th century, who lived in the time after the Renaissance and lived witnessing the world all the way to the modern era, is there to show the Guardians how much they missed and how they can further change and improve for the more modern world. These characters are immortal beings who have so much power over the world, it makes so much sense that when they fall and rise in power it impacts the world that they want to influence, for better or for worse.
#In the official comic where pitch is chosen as a guardian but refuses#he says that the guardians would rather put their destiny in the hands of children#instead of being the ones who influence their fates#he views it as ‘stepping back’ rather than protecting and guiding#it gives such good insight to how he views the world and his place in it#especially how he functions in history as ‘the dark ages’#And in Joanne Matte’s unofficial comics there’s an implication that the magical world has disappeared/died out because of colonization#I’m partial to that particular idea because this whole theme is very Eurocentric and the books are worse with it#it’s a contrast to the idea of the renaissance#and the ‘rebirth’ of culture#and the Guardians aren’t ‘in the field’ at that point and get caught up with their work so much#that they lost the point of why they do the work they do#to the point that Pitch can tip the scales and effect them so much#even though he cannot fight them at their full power#I really do like how they connected these characters and themes with history#it makes so much sense for immortal characters#even power struggles and scrimmages can change the world#rise of the guardians#rotg#jack frost#pitch black#sanderson mansnoozie#e. aster bunnymund#toothiana#nicholas st. north

Not to sound pretentious but I think at this point if you’re unwilling to engage with the gods debate in good faith and only engage with it based on stated biased information (Matt pointing out the gods stuff was written by the victors and the cleric’s relationship is not everyone’s ect ect) then you’re just being blatantly anti intellectual 😭 like they’re literally colonizers lol there’s a real reason why the campaign is dedicated to having tough conversations about them like. No one is saying we all should hate the wildmother 😭 but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a reason in universe many of the mortals hate the gods
#everytime I go into the cr tag people are complaining about the gods discussion like I’m sorry if you think having an#intellectual conversation and debate about something that effects everyone and everyone has a different relationship to is#ruining the campaign?? mayhaps you’re just stupid and incapable of engaging in good faith with media that makes you uncomfortable and or#self reflect like 😭#also. as an indigenous person it’s v weird seeing everyone brushing over them being colonizers like..#cr#critical role#I babble#discourse#cr3

Okay but reading Eve's story in the comics when she goes to "Africa" to use her powers to "help" as someone familiar with sustainable service and history of the negative effects of western "aid" just made me
#invincible#atom eve#i understand that it was not meant to be realistic#and it was probably supposed to show that she was naive and didnt know how to help people irl#but god it made me so frustrated!!!!#she just went to a random place and put a house there! (colonizer)#“every time i try to help it seems like things get worse” no sh*t!!!!#if you give people free food it tanks the economy!!!!#she didnt even go to a refugee camp she just went to a village she thought looked poor!!!!#she should have tried to collaborate with established local service organizations#let them lead her in how to maximize her effectiveness#she could have done so much sustainable good if she defered to the people with experience!!!#god it still makes me mad

One of the things that drives me bonkers when reading romance novels is books that want the set dressing of politics without the real world harm associated with political and historical powers and like don’t get me wrong i understand the impulse! The problem is many stupid people trying to write racism-free utopia versions of the present actually end up inventing new and embarrassing flavors of racism that I am forced to read with my eyes
#oh this african island was never colonized! just ignore that all of the residents speak english and have deeply british names!#that just happens in africa sometimes!#like you didn’t have to say that. you could have just left shit alone but no you had to go and claim special#‘never effected by imperialism’ africa for your white character to visit#come on

I feel as though the crew needed to read on dictatorship and colonialism so they can better portray them in the show I feels as thought it a tell don’t show type of phenomena, the isles became a utopia when Belos is gone and no one was upset their ruler was missing, the rebels didn’t provide evidence that Belos was planning a Genocide, and Philip was able to one-handily conquer the isles with the guise of wild magic being dangerous because why?
A lot of different stories have trouble portraying the power struggle and difficulties that arise as a result of a strong government with tight control of the people being removed.
In Avatar the Last Airbender, they did an incredible job of portraying the loss of culture and distinct boundaries due to the colonial behavior of the Fire Nation and even the way it affected the livelihood of towns and cities under it. They didn’t have time to also depict the way that the political structure would shift to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. This has led to a feature generally referred to as “The Good Successor” or something similar. The basic premise is that there is a descendent of the big bad who assisted the heroes and will take over after the fall of the aforementioned villain, allowing for a more satisfying resolution with less worries about the future while it’s implied that changes will happen after. In the example I used, Zuko would be this character.
The Owl House….did not do this. They don’t talk about the various ways that cultural traditions and history were erased by Philip’s actions and control of the government. From what we saw of Elsewhere and Elsewhen, he didn’t need to change much, anyway. The Isles already conform to the European and Colonial behaviors imposed by most wide-spread colonial empires, so there doesn’t appear to be a great loss of information history or culture, although there were mentions on the restriction of knowledge. They don’t mention any of the ways that the dissolution of the Covens affected the Isles or even what they did to counter that. It feels unrealistic and, quite frankly, lazy. Bad things don’t just go away because the person with the most power does; actual changes need to be made.

to shape a dragon's breath by moniquill blackgoose is amazing please read it
#its set in a fantasy world thats very vaguely a fantasy world and is pretty much just a parallel of our world. like the fantasy map at the#beginning it literally just a world map with different names for the same countries#main character is a native girl from an island called masquapaug#she finds a nampeshiwe (native dragon) egg and it chooses her as its nampeshiweisit (not MASTER but like. companion/soulmate/whatever?) and#they have to go to an anglish school on the mainland in order for anequa (mc) to be allowed to keep kasaqua (her dragon) by the anglish#government. its SUPER SUPER COOL and delves into the themes and effects of colonization and native genocide via fantasy world#its like. so thinly veiled the veil is basically glass. the veil is not there#the writing is AMAZING and kasaqua is adorable#im 128 pages in and anequs has made friends with a black maid/servant/slave working at the school and im kind of getting gay vibes from it#but that might just be me hoping for rep lol#HOWEVER on the page im on right now anequs talks about TWO-SPIRIT PEOPLE (or her culture's equivalent) and how her people have a name that#encompasses basically the whole transgender umbrella of people. transgender and nonbinary and genderfluid and UGH its just amazing i love it#so much. moniquill blackgoose i love you this is everything#magpie thoughts#books#magpie reads#new tag?#to shape a dragon's breath#nampeshiweisit#<- thats the name of the series

from a textual standpoint and also a personal experience standpoint i feel like the strilondes narratives and their struggles with being neglected (and subsequently extremely self destructive behaviors) would be so much richer when you factor in how some norms in the black community (especially the west indian + african american diaspora ) encourage the specific dynamics of abuse that rose and dave have going on with their parents + how dirk and roxy approach neglect. itd just make so much more sense. also explains why so many black people resonate w/ the strilondes.
#id like to clarify that abuse is not inherent to black people but just an effect of colonization that has long terrorized my people#i will expand on this later but i have writing to do right now#just wanted to get it into words before it fled my mind.#homestuck organizational tag#roxy lalonde organizational tag#dirk strider organizational tag#rose lalonde organizational tag#dave strider organizational tag

to add to the bf pepe during euros
pepe was always devoted watching it w/u whether its on his apartment, home, or hotel. he watched every game analyzing spain's opponent, which makes you laugh since he's so invested in it and just wishes england wins. pepe as a lovingly bf to a brit, also supports england (but ofc less than his home country)
however things changed when both of your country are fighting against e/o after the semifinal results, his apartment became a teasing ground for the both of you while waiting for finals day to arrive, wishing e/o that their home country would fumble during penalty, etc. you both even made a bet that whoever wins in the final has to post an ig story wishing the opponent's team a sincere congratulations.
when finals day came, you two are bickering as hell. whenever england did smth wrong pepe would laugh at you, especially with your reaction, almost tearing up from what she just saw. and when spain won, he screamed VAMOS ESPANYA on top of his lungs, and to add fuel to the fire, carried you like the trophy of eurocup while chanting spain's cheer.
an hour has passed and you are wrapped around your blanket, grieving on the loss while pepe has just finished cleaning up the snacks and drinks you ate. while walking to you, pepe saw your face and chuckled a bit too loud that you heard it and came of to you as teasing, which you already had enough of for today, so you faced around to not see his smiling face (which you hate to admit that looks so cute). pepe walked around to meet your face again, and this time comforted you, saying england has another shot at world cup.
next day you woke up to pepe spooning you, and you decided to take a picture of you two at bed and posting it to your ig story, tagging spain's football team with caption "congrats @/sefutbol, atleast you made my boyfriend the happiest man last night", before turning around to snuggle on his chest before going back to sleep once more

bestie… you have killed me… i am actually dead……. what the frick 😭 i dont even know what to say… i have nothing to add…… bestie you rlly popped off with this 😭😭
#him carrying you like a trophy 😭😭😭😭😭 had me dead fr#and the ig story :(((( help me#also whejdhsks the colonizing thing 😭 pepe just has that effect doesnt he#not fair#he makes us do all kinds of things#(im very willing tho)#asks!#anon!#honey anon!#🍯!#pepe thoughts

In the fallout of the election, a stream of social media content—some from passionate Harris supporters, some from lesser-evil Democratic voters, and some, presumably, from people simply lashing out, horrified and distraught at Trump’s win—took to blaming Palestinians for the outcome.
My initial fury at these statements eventually gave way to analysis. How could so many people be so callous and so wrong? The tendency to scapegoat in moments of crisis, along with pervasive anti-Palestinian racism, are surely factors, but there are larger forces at work as well.
...Simply put, most people have no idea to what extent this genocide is being perpetrated not only by Israel but also by the United States. For a solid majority of the center-left, what is happening in Gaza is tragic but ultimately less important than the most significant existential threat: the ascendance of Trump. During the run-up to the election, the argument goes, we Palestinian and Arab Americans should have understood that resisting fascism in the United States is the primary goal and gotten in line accordingly.
But resisting fascism is our collective goal. We just know that in order to resist it, we have to fight it on two fronts of U.S. state violence: at home and abroad. Because if the United States, together with Israel, manages to disembowel the ICJ, the ICC, the UN, and a broader global order built after the Holocaust and World War II, no one is safe. The fact that Israel has committed genocide, turned humans into walking bombs in its pager attack in Lebanon, and decimated countries while the UN Security Council watches passively should concern all of us. As Colombian President Gustavo Petro warned back in December 2023, “What we are seeing in Gaza is a rehearsal of the future.”
..In his searing 1950 polemic Discourse on Colonialism, Martinican writer Aimé Césaire wrote of the “boomerang effect,” whereby violence in the colonial periphery manifests itself in the colonial metropole. Hitler’s genocide of European Jews, he noted, was modeled after European rule over African and Asian colonies. (He may have had in mind the German extermination of the Nama and Herero people in Namibia during their period of colonial rule from 1884 and 1915—a period of brutality that scarcely registered in Europe while it was taking place.) Some seventy-five years later, Césaire’s point has been borne out many times over: there is no clear dividing line between a colonial power’s imperial geography and its metropole.

Atsushi's back in the game!!! ۶( ˆ o ˆ )
#And Kouyou!!!!#Also. I can say Steinbeck is kinda 👀👀👀#King of the specific category of “I forget I like him until he's on screen”#I'm seriously unlocking memories with this rewatch. Like I haven't thought about it in two years–#but I just know when I was watching the anime for the first time I was being like#“Of COURSE the villains need to spend several minutes each episode explaining in detail how their own superpowers work so that the–#protagonists can get a perfect idea of how to best counter them. Why are villains made so freaking stupid in this show” aljhvwslchvqliyqwb#But. Eh. I guess that's just bsd to you.#Alsoooooo random thought of the day: I don't really favour how Tanizaki's ability was adapted in the anime.#I very well understand they were going for this green Matrix-like illusion effect‚ but every time someone says “... Snow?”#I'm like please explain where do you live that has snow glowing green.#Aamsjgvfaskjhfv sorry this is me being very. Cranky and nitpicky and having terrible audience etiquette in refusing to–#engage in suspension of disbelief. It just bugs me akvakcvqkyb I just feel like... Green is such a non-snow color–#that quite of completely disrupts the Light Snow / Sasame Yuki aesthetic. I would have liked it much better light blue or simply white.#What else. The way the Guild just goes on at stereotypes still troubles me a lot. The “usamericans can't be touched by laws–#because they use money to corrupt anyone” “foreign criminal organization come in our country to corrupt our pure and untouched soil”#Idk. Maybe all of it is true. Can it still be deemed a stereotype when it's objectively something that's happened before–#and will probably keep happening?#I suppose I'm just not a fan of the constant hostility against any foreigner. Idk.#This situation besides is extremely ironical. If you meet me irl it probably won't take long to see me being very outspoken about–#how much I despise usa cultural colonization of all other countries. It's something that really bothers me‚ how rooted and pervasive–#their influence is. So in a lot of ways I can relate to the author's sentiment#I just feel that. If you start treating them as stereotypes and ignore the complexity of a country and the wide spectrum of causes–#that contribute to its attitude in international relations. You end up practicing precisely what you're trying to criticize.#Okay this is the last time I'm getting into the politics of the Guild arc lol#random rambles#This time I took watching the episode slow I feel a little late
