Midnights Mayhem with Me!

I’m going to call it, the 9/11 on the MMwM was about the buildup to the VMA’s with the intention of creating a split in the narrative.

Taylor singing “I kissed a girl and I liked it” was for the gaylors and ending the night with thanking “my boyfriend Travis” was for the swifties. She held out for so long and did it on stage when all eyes were on her to create the most impact. This provides more proof on both sides with the gaylors seeing it as yet another PR move and encouraged the swifties to think they’ve won the battle.

For now we’re left with an ultimatum between track 1 with ‘lavender haze’ and track 5 with ‘you’re on your own kid’. And all of this was just the test run, the finale is still yet to come. I’m putting my money on the finale, and potentially the final show of the eras tour, being an ultimatum between Taylor Swift (Taylor’s Version) and Reputation (Taylor’s Version). 💚🖤

“I put the money in the bag and I stole the keys. That was the last time you ever saw Me!” The man wall is a decoy roadmap for the swifties and the MMwM track list is the cypher for the gaylors (the missing polaroid and the woman in ❤️).

The MMwM name itself seems to be a reference to how Taylor has blended queer references into her lyrics with a pattern of Men, Men, (Women), Men. Hence the McDonald’s references. “MMM, I’m (NOT) loving’ it” vs “A happy meal 🍔🍟💗”

Track 9 -bejewelled

She emphasised the with part of MMwM. And the tartan print matching Taylor’s VMA outfit? 💀 also note 9/11 was mentioned in her acceptance speech while wearing this outfit. I cant help but think the VMA’s were always planned to be on this date and Taylor planned around it. Either way, mentioning 9/11 in one speech and Travis in the other is confirmation for both sides in one night.

Track 11- karma

Outfit matching with the giant version of Taylor in the anti hero music videos. “Good evening.” This connection to the VMA’s confirms my suspicions of where we are in the Truman show timeline, with the anti hero music video recreating the first half of the movie. Notice the applause after Truman is reunited with his father is what Taylor described in her second speech of the night.

The remaining five

The following is my prediction of what’s still to come. Track 11 is where we’re at in terms of eras and solved clues. The last five were all released on the same day, so it’s worth considering this date and the time these ones were released.

Track 1- lavender haze

12am - Meet Me! (Taylor’s Version) at midnight. The five cats on her shirt. She said “The tension is palpable.” and the caption says it’s “Gonna be a wild ride 😜”. I feel like this MMwM is leading us back to the beginning so Taylor can finally move forwards.

Debut 💚 vs reputation 🖤

“If all you want is (track fives) for me, then it’s just white noise”

It’s fascinating that her real cats in the funeral scene picture represent debut, speak now and TTPD. These are based on the cats musical characters and Benjamin Button specifically represents the process of going back in time to reclaim her masters. If we’re going all the way back to the start then reclaiming her name is the destination.

Swifties have been so focused on anticipating reputation 🖤 and karma 🧡 that they’ve skimmed over everything else going on in the process. This created a decoy with 🧡🖤 as the 🥕 carrot dangling in front of the horse, distracting the majority from seeing the forest for the trees. Meanwhile gaylors are Chad in the funeral scene pretending that they don’t know about the secret encoded messages.

Track 5- you’re on your own kid

1am - 1 vs many. This one took a long time to get the ball out of the bingo cage and the caption says “I promise it’s worth the wait 🌌”. This emoji is the Milky Way, a galaxy of a billion stars.

Star 🌟 vs galaxy 🌌

There’s rumours that the Truman show was based on Princess Diana or Michael Jackson, but it’s come to represent many versions of fame and social media as technology has advanced over time. Seeing the many dedications to Britney Spears at the VMA’s and the outer space themes just highlights the fact that Taylor is not the only one who feels trapped in the web of being a celebrity (World Wide Web🕸️).

Taylor™ is Truman™, but so is everyone else within the industry. Robin Williams™, Michael Jackson™ and Princess Diana™ were all Truman™. Britney™ is Truman™. They’re all Truman™ because unlike the Truman show, the cycle of new stars doesn’t end. The free Britney movement highlighted her struggles as a star 🌟, but then everyone moved on once the conservatorship came to an end. They were so blinded by the details of Britney’s life that they didn’t look up and notice that her star was shining amongst a galaxy full of stars 🌌 in the same position.

Track 10- labyrinth (swiftie pov)

2am - 2 narratives. I feel like this is the point where swifties get stuck in the loop of demanding reputation and feeling like they’ve won the tayvis debate. The green gingham skirt matches Taylor’s outfit from the tennis match, which many swifties have used as evidence to confirm their view of the relationship. They’ll either stay here believing they’re on the right path anticipating an engagement right up until the end or will slowly start to come around to our point of view.

Track 10- labyrinth (gaylor pov)

2am - 2 narratives. Gaylors on the other hand saw through the tennis appearance with how their behaviour differed from everyone else around them, but the tennis reference still applies. The lilac short skirt from the for a fortnight challenge matches the skirt from blank space. It’s Travis’s ‘favourite’ song for a reason and we all know what that song implies. The shirt from the labyrinth clip is also a match to the anti hero challenge where she’s holding Benji like a baby. This feels like an acknowledgment of the “childless cat lady” being the correct path to follow.

On the Jimmy Fallon show Taylor invited us to go down the rabbit hole with her. If the rabbit hole is a labyrinth, it’s not a maze of tunnels with multiple endings. A labyrinth is a journey along a single path with one destination at the end. In the end only one side of the swiftie/gaylor debate can be right.

I mentioned earlier that the MMwM was a cypher. This is a form of communication that’s only understood through the use of a key. This is similar to how queer flagging works, both people need to have the prior knowledge of queer culture to interpret the message correctly. Gaylors have picked up on the deeper meaning of Taylor’s story because we’re all viewing it through a queer lens. Swifties on the other hand use this process in a more obvious way with friendship bracelets, hand hearts and merchandise.

To the swifties the rabbit hole is a cave like chamber, whereas gaylors hold the key that unlocks the door to the tunnel. We’re going to receive more backlash than ever following 9/11 because they don’t realise that the rabbit hole continues.

Track 12- sweet nothing

Swiftie ending? Nothing of note in this one, but I do think this is the point where we’re all on board and the tail end is to provide an insight to what the swifties will experience.

On the new heights podcast Travis described his outfit from the tennis appearance as an ode to the 1960’s cartoon character Mr Magoo, with the bucket hat and suspenders. Mr Magoo’s character is known for driving around blindly due to an extreme case of short sightedness. “You never saw the signs (I gave so many signs)”. He gets into many predicaments caused by his stubborn refusal to admit that his eye sight is a problem.

There’s also a business based term called Mr Magoo syndrome. It describes how someone has to water down the truth so much it distills every nuance of a complex issue to create a palatable version for the recipient to understand it. But then in the process they become trapped and have to continue having a shallow conversation that lacks the truth they began with.

The purpose of the Truman show is to encourage the viewer to see the director’s role in the story. Truman became Truman™ at a young age to fit in, but then became trapped living a lie because the director wasn’t able to see what’s inside Truman’s head.

All of this, combined with the lack of understanding to decipher Taylor’s lyrics through a queer lens is why the gaylors are right and the swifties are wrong.

To some extent they’re playing the role of director in Taylor’s version of the Truman show. Not being able to see what’s inside Taylor’s heart has kept her performing for them from the very beginning of her career. She has been watering down her truth the whole time because she wanted the swifties to stay.

“All this showmanship to keep it for you in *sweetness*”

TTPD is a goodbye to the swifties that will leave and a peace offering to the ones who will linger in the hopes they’ll stay. 🤍🖤

Track 4- snow on the beach feat LDR

Gaylor ending? “The season finale of Midnights Mayhem with Me, with QUITE the twist of an ending…”

[Alexa, play maroon! 💋]

Jack plays Taylor’s muse in the bejewelled music video to provide a neutral option on both sides, but what if it’s more than that? What if “karma is my boyfriend” is a reference to what Jack has been able to do to help not just Taylor, but help unite many others in the industry?When all eyes were on Truman, his best friend Marlon was working behind the scenes to make sure everything was in order. For the plan to have the biggest impact it was integral that Truman kept up the facade of Truman™, knowing that faltering so close to the finish line would prevent him from escaping when everyone least expected it. This is the role Jack would be fulfilling for Taylor now. “Every bait and switch was a work of art”.

Everyone in the industry that feels like Taylor™ is going through what Taylor describes in ‘I can do it with a broken heart’. “All the pieces of me shattered as the crowd was chanting ‘MORE’”. More of Truman™. More access to their private life. More influence on their choices. More, more, more, forevermore.

In the end Truman’s turning point was seeing how far the director was willing to go to force him to stay. He wanted Truman to help conceive the next version of Truman™. This push to repeat the cycle is what’s motivating Taylor to go through with it now. “You look like *Taylor Swift* in this light, we’re loving it” 🌟 And Travis is the key for the swifties to be able to see the bigger picture because just like the director, the swifties have been predictable enough that Taylor’s been able to plan things like this years in advance.

Others have played a role in influencing Taylor need to stay in the role of Taylor™, but now that Taylor is focused on sharing her side of the story we’re starting to see the role she’s started playing as the best friend and director for the next generation of artists.

Hey! Can you share your thoughts on Suga as an artist and a performer? This ask is inspired by all those gifs btw.

hi!! i have NOT forgotten about this ask, i promise. i was meant to answer this, like, a week ago, and then i got off track because my sister sent me a tweet and what can i say, i have the attention span and object permanence of a very small dog. sometimes. it HAPPENS. but i have not forgotten and that is why i am going to finally answer this.

under the cut because this is extremely long.

so, the thing is, it's been forever really since i've watched any bts live performances, they have just become so grating to me that i could simply NOT bear it, like. i have to love myself a little too, and i cannot deal with the rapid decline of their already subpar vocal standard, and the blatant disregard of the rap line's actual function. which is, you know. to rap. but all of this aside, i did sit down to relive the glory days of monster performances and, especially, rap line and yoongi solo performances.

which is why we will start this thing with my thoughts on yoongi as a performer. i even got out my hard drive with the bts concerts for this, which i haven't looked at in ages EITHER. *blows off the dust*

my favorite live performances he's done are: trivia: seesaw, outro: tear, cypher pt. 4, intro: never mind, boy with luv, and mic drop. i think? in that order. it's really been forever. honorable mention to interlude: shadow and black swan. black swan yoongi is something else and he shines in that song for reasons i will be getting into further down. it's kind of like the thesis of yoongi as a performer. but more to that later.

yoongi as a performer is very. hm. how do we get into this? this could (a/n: and will be!) be an endlessly long post. so, the main takeaway that i get whenever i watch yoongi is that he isn't a natural on stage. i think, whatever he does up there is hardly-fought-for and hardly-earned. yoongi is the kind of idol type that should not be an idol. that could not be suited less to be on an idol stage but he bodies it, because the yoongi who decided to become an idol is a product of his time and circumstance. the yoongi who became an idol is the kind of guy we saw in the late aughts and early 10s. the yoongi who is an idol can be traced back to a certain idol type that was super popular in the first and second generation of kpop, that only made it possible for a guy like yoongi to debut in the first place. you can draw a direct line from g-dragon, beast's junhyung, b.a.p's yongguk, block b's zico, and 2pm's taecyeon, to yoongi.

i have mentioned it before but pretty much everything bighit did with yoongi up until, like, 2016 (and especially during you never walk alone and the most beautiful moment in life) is quintessentially modeled after beast's junhyung. for good reason and unsurprisingly; beast was pretty much the biggest kpop group that existed at one point. yoongi and junhyung are the same type, visually and artistically, down to their similar vocal types. it's so obvious when you know what you're looking for. i had that epiphany when i was watching beast's 12:30 and good luck mv's.

anyways. yoongi is an introvert, above all, and you can tell when he performs. he will never know the sort of ease that hoseok possesses on stage, for example. when yoongi performs, he does not project his energy outwards. he is not a charisma bomb like hoseok or jimin, but he has a certain draw that makes you want to know more, look closer, keep your eyes on him at all times. he has a very commanding stage presence and especially up until 2018, there was a lot of anger and fury beating beneath yoongi's live performances. he mellowed out significantly for songs like boy with luv or dna, but if you watch him perform tear or seesaw or idol, you notice there is a certain sort of desperation that clings to him. that certain desperation wrote interlude: shadow, by the way. and i think he never let go of that feeling until he released that song (and black swan). everything had to be so immediate for yoongi when he performed. the energy he did project had no goal and was not aimed at anyone or anything; it just burst out of him. it's the kind of thing that drove him from the underground rap scene to the stage of wembley stadium.

that makes yoongi not the most likable performer in the world because he does not perform for anyone. when he is on stage, it is not for the crowd, it is for himself. i feel like yoongi spent the majority of his life as an idol proving something to the world at large, and to himself. to that kid that never thought he would make it there, but had all the swagger and arrogance to do whatever it took. (which is how we got idol yoongi)

something, something, this is why it all went down the drain after dynamite.

he shines in rap songs, unsurprisingly. yoongi is a passable, capable dancer, an okay singer if in his own range, but a very, very talented rapper. and his affinity for double time raps is driven by the desperation and fury i mentioned, i think, all the words he had to say had to get out somehow, no matter at what cost, and sometimes that meant squeezing them between the beats, the metronome. he is not just a 'fast talker'. in my opinion, that does a great disservice to his skillset. he is pretty good at what he does, actually. he is the most skilled rapper in bts, and bts has the second best rapline in the industry.

he is prone to arrogance, i know i already said that, and that makes him come across as plain unlikable very easily and has made him fuck up more than once. as a performer and as a human. it is not his best trait, but it works in his favor on songs like cypher pt. 4, idol, and blood, sweat and tears. it offers his rap an edge that neither hoseok nor namjoon can sell as well as he does. this is the classic idol rapper blueprint that has gone lost among the sauce of most 3rd and almost all 4th gen. we do not have performers like this anymore, because an idol has to be likable, needs to sell you a product, needs to be your potential love interest, etcetera.

yoongi as a performer: introverted, skillful, arrogant, commanding, sharp, desperate, furious, melancholic, occasionally gentle and sweet.

now, yoongi as an artist. well, that's a different beast, but not entirely. yoongi as an artist is in a way just another side of yoongi as a performer, but someone who allows us to delve deeper into who he is and what he wants to be. what he wants the public to perceive him as. which is paradox because yoongi as a songwriter and producer affords him to dig deep and say things that yoongi the idol, the performer, would never allow to be seen or heard. it's like a song allows him to confess things. and whatever is the result, well, it will be judged but not in real time. not directly out of his mouth. this is how we got the last, seesaw, his tear verse, and black swan. like, it is crazy to me that song he hasn't even written is so accurately a reflection of who he is as an artist. (the connection is dionysus -> black swan -> suga's interlude and sprinkled among that are first love, interlude: shadow and intro: never mind)

"born as an idol, reborn as an artist" led to "oh, that would be my first death i been always so afraid of," and ended at "honestly, it’s different from the future I hoped for, but that doesn’t matter, now it’s the matter of survival — however it is."

yoongi is cocky as a performer and he had no qualms of threading those parts of himself into his work, but i think what would truly kill him, and is partly why this recent development of bts is so hysterical to me, is if he would have to let go of the part of him that creates art. if yoongi would never be allowed to touch a pen or a piano, i think that would kill him. he lives and dies for this shit, and it makes up a lot of who he is as a person, too. it is no surprise that suga's interlude and black swan were released at pretty much the same time.

yoongi constantly lives with the success he has achieved and the dreams he has realized, and the dread that comes from how all of this has happened and none of it has turned out the way he had hoped for. a lot of his work is trying to come to terms with this super stardom and who exists beneath. and what happens when those dreams turn to nightmares. and how in the end, it doesn't matter, because he does it for the art. how much it pains him that he loves the success. what loving that success has done to him. the rot it infests you with, that you cannot help but crave. that kind of paralyzing fear it breathes into you.

on another note, the only reason why the most beautiful moment in life worked so well is because it was built around yoongi in so many ways. that entire narrative rises and fallswith him. he just, kind of, internalized and owned that. like, he is that manic pixie dream boy. if you are dead at the end of the story, you are dead at the beginning of it. it's so crazy! if i think about it for longer, i really do go crazy. yoongi's desperation, fury, tenderness. it all lives in that narrative. man.

i feel like i am just rambling at this point but yoongi as an artist is a safe space, a place for him to unburden himself, to do what he loves the most with no restraints, to practically stage an exorcism of a cripplingly introverted performer. yoongi as an artist allows him to speak his innermost thoughts. he is meticulous, sensitive, attentive. he has a great ear, a vision for what he wants to make, and a very definite style depending on the genre he produces for. his style reminds me a lot of the songs junhyung produced for beast (not a coincidence). so, here we are once again! full circle.

So todays morning pages are weird because I have so much on my brain I need to release and my hand will get tired real quick. It’s clearly afternoon so as we can see I’m still sleeping in late. So much has happened over the course of the past couple weeks and there’s no one to blame but myself. Nothing is bad I just can’t put the outcomes on anyone other than the choices Ive been making lately, which aren’t terrible but aren’t always beneficial either.

I’m just hella behind, my sleep schedule be a wreck and then it’s hard to get back on top of things. I’m glad I have today off because I’ve been able to catch up on a lot things including my week three of artist way so that I can finish week 4 this week as well.

Sleeping with Rah was a big regret and I also saw Angel which didn’t feel close to how bad I wanted him this summer. Im just happy I can finally close that door. I’m gonna give celibacy another shot but i’m not gonna initially aim for the summer, I’m gonna give myself a smaller time frame. I’m also planning to start lifting weights again to change up my workout. I also plan on going to church in Chicago again so that I can get dressed up to serve God. I see the things I can implement in my life and I see how well it will serve me if I’m consistent in them. So this is just another week of getting back on the horse and learning from my mistakes. I actually feel like this week there is a good chance of me doing the things I say I’m gonna do. Today I get to catch up on morning pages and go for a run as well as a 30 min stretch. I also just booked studio time to go over the jlo dance from Friday night session with Niki and Tiffany. I’ve been wanting to record a class and retake that class on my own in a different setting. So I plan on doing this next Saturday with Traes Choreo as well. So tomorrow Niki is reteaching so I’ll have it perfected by the end of class today and hopefully the goal is let myself shine in class and finally get some content to share and let myself be great. This will be in prepration of the cypher sage is having at their release party where I absolutely have to join. I plan on taking Jason’s freestyle class tonight to cleanse my pallet when it comes to my own freestyle and choreography. Tomorrow of course, retaking Niki’s and Wednesday I’m gonna record Tre Daniel’s house session so I can practice that in the mornings before my workout. Thursday I work at the bar where I plan on being presenting myself as the most professional I’ve ever been. Friday trae is back teaching so I’ll be taking him again and re learning that Saturday morning. I’ll need to find time to do an artist date in between . Then of course do my laundry and reset Saturday as well. Hopefully I get work Sunday I plan on actually going to church and then dancing the rest of the evening.

That’s a jam packed week and I’m already running behind now. I’m about to do my stretch as well as reset another 75 hard. There’s not much else to say but actually do. Reminder that I need to make time to get the gym membership.

I'm literally sitting in my room listening to his playlists on Spotify. How the hell did I get here? There are several things racing through my mind. None of which outweighs the other but are all hitting simultaneously. To help make things easier for you to follow, we’re micro focusing on the final boss per say. So, what's hitting my mind? First, but not really first, why the fuck am I doing this to myself? Am I just bored? Am I missing the idea of him again? (keyword= idea of him) Am I trying to manifest something that I know will never happen? Does this guy really think of that other girl when he listens to these love songs? Could the title of the playlist suggest some kind of hidden use of each? If so, does our old song fuel him with the kind of rage necessary to hit a new PR? Does he sing “Better Together” by Jack Johnson to her, to show how much he loves her? Why couldn’t I get the same or better treatment? I know he only loved me for a week or two tops, so why didn’t he just leave me alone while we were still young? I guess you kinda get an idea of what I’ve been through, but let's dive a little deeper into details. You see, I was in a serious relationship where, unfortunately, the girl loved the boy “more” or simply just loved the boy, and it was not reciprocated. I can try to blame conformality as a reason for why it lasted so long, but I really don’t know anymore now that I have had 4 years to reflect. You see, this reflection has produced a seed within my mind that makes me wonder if I ever knew him... I don’t think I ever did, yet I continue to daydream about the same stranger with that familiar mask. These are the questions that shall remain unanswered until the corresponding person answers them himself. Anyways, to cut a long story short, after several years of being together, he ultimately decided that he wanted to be with another girl that he had met at school. I remember the day he told me clearly. I can't lie and say that it doesn’t hurt anymore to think back on cause, unfortunately, it still does. After all, the sting of betrayal mixed with the apocalyptic heartbreak of your life isn't easy to forget. The thing about that type of situation is that it leaves scars and fears where happiness and peace used to be leaving behind some kind of overgrown thorn. Kinda like the thorn from the book, Legend of the Seeker. The more and more Richard Cypher tried to get rid of the thorn embedded in his hand, the more it burrowed itself. If it weren't for the help of his wizard friend, Cypher would have died. Heartbreak and fear can burrow deep inside of your heart if you're not careful. Sadly, wizards don’t exist in our world to help out either. But if you do happen to be a real wizard, please come find me and help me feel whole again. Come and erase the memories of my one true love.

Practice Game: Chaos Space Marines vs Tyranids

Lost. Big error was that I missed that models with Fly can go over other models, but not terrain. An early game charge might have changed things, a Daemon Prince knocking a badly wounded Carnifex out of the fight earlier and gaining points. A smaller one was improperly bringing Cypher in from reserve after using his Escape ability. Guy can’t deep strike. He should have been able to walk on and attack the same target, but whoops.

One thing I want to work on is being assertive without being a jerk. My opponent got the armor saves on their Trygon Prime and Maleceptor wrong most of the game, saying a 2+ instead of their 3+. Odds are that it would have knocked more wounds off both faster which again would have helped win the game for me. It sounded wrong, but I let it pass and that should have double checked. Further, he used a stratagem on a Malanthrope (to boost it’s Spore aura) with a Shrouding Spores. Can’t, as it’s not a Sporecaster. Most people wouldn’t notice, but again, an error I should have checked on. Finally, his super Screamer killer is strength 6, not seven, which helped him kill several vehicles and one of the Princes (where he would have been wounding on 5′s thank to Mark of Nurgle).

I’m not saying these are cheating, but they’re frustrating errors . My fear is coming across as a nitpicking boor. But errors breaking against me are a pain, and I want to be able to be treated fairly (and ideally, I do the same for my opponent). But I’m scared that if I bother people too much, I won’t be able to get a game in.

Army list thoughts:

Daemon Prince with Claw of the Stygian Court is just unimpressive. Maybe it was a bad target, but it’s just doesn’t hit hard enough. Urgh. But Princes overall are just too soft for premier hero characters.

I want to make Legionaries and Rhinos work, but they either shred inconsequential targets, bounce off a moderately tough unit, or get shredded by something before they can do anything. I’m going to stick by them (cut from 4 Rhino squads to 3), but they have to be handled like sugar glass. As far as power fantasy goes, they’re the worst.

Summary; little snippets into Hannah's life as an adoptive older sister for her younger crewmates.

Being the youngest of 4 (give or take) siblings wasn't easy. Hannah Hook knew this better than anyone.

Because for as long as she could remember, she'd always been the baby sister. The one everyone protected and bossed around even when she didn't need it.

And for as long as she could remember, she had wanted a younger sibling. Maybe that's why she took so many little kids under her wing. Even the ones no one else wanted. Or maybe it was just because of her big heart that she wore on her sleeve.

No one knew for sure.

What everyone did know, how ever, was that Hannah Hook was a natural born older sister. Even if she didn't have any biological younger siblings of her own.

And it was all because of how she interacted with her younger crew mates.

The first time anyone really noticed it, Hannah had been 6 and someone had decided it was a great idea to pick a fight with Isaac Cypher.

A somewhat meek but verbally biting 5 year old who kept mostly to himself that had joined Hannah's crew only days before as an escape from his unsavory home life.

No one really knew what had started the fight. In fact, all anyone could really remember from thay day in the fish and chips shop was that the older kid-- who was about 10-- had lifted the frail boy up by his collar...

Only to be hit over the head with a plastic tray by a livid and very tiny Hook. Who proceeded to repeat the action until the boy ran out of the shop, crying and clutching a broken nose, never to return.

It wasn't the first time she had resorted to violence to protect her crew and it wouldn't be the last either.

But protection wasn't all Hannah brought to the table in the department of being a natural born elder sister.

She also brought kindness and love. And support. Which all of her crew mates were in desperate need of.

Noah had been a bit delayed in his early development. Meaning he didn't start walking till he was nearly three, which was unusual for a godling.

Especially a full-blooded one.

Which was a great source of frustration for his parents and siblings who had to carry him every where.

They were beginning to give up hope that he'd even walk at all.

But not Hannah.

No, Hannah held out hope. She was patient. She used encouraging words and positive reinforcement and eventually, she was able to get him to walk to her.

She still has the video of that day hidden under her bed in a box full of things Noah had given her over the years.

She was his favorite non-sibling crewmate for a reason, after all.

Hannah crawled under the table were the newest member of her crew, 3 year old Fiona, sat hidden from view. A bowl of black berries in her hand.

Which she immediately handed over, silently.

Fiona took them and ate them in silence alongside her captain, who never tried to force her to talk.

"I miss home" she finally said. It was all she'd said in a very long time.

Hannah pulled her close "I know. I'm sorry"

Hannah handed 3 year old, Jolene Bog, a box wrapped in tissue paper smiling mischievously.

"Happy birthday!"

Jolene looked at her warily, like the shy child she was but took the present and opened it anyway. And let out a squeal of delight at what she found.

A barely chipped, black music box with a little dancing punk ballerina inside. Hannah had spent hours digging through the barrage looking for it.

Jolene never parted with it.

Hannah noticed and made sure to keep it in good condition so that it'd never stop working.

After all, She'd do anything to see Jolene smile.

Hannah was the one who gave Craven his favorite frog plushy the day he was born.

No one had asked her to.

No one had even told her about how close to tears little Jolene was about how her mama wouldn't wake up.

No one had told her that Anna and Aaron needed help taking care of their younger siblings because Chernabog couldn't be bothered.

But she had shown up anyway, bearing gifts and had stayed until her father had dragged her home.

She had named him.

He kept that plushie long into adult hood.

Just like how Hannah kept every drawing he and the others gave her.

Levi started giving Hannah little rocks he found when he first joined her crew at 2.

By the time he was 11, she had over a hundred of them stored in jars under her bed.

She never threw them out.

She made him a paper boat every year on his birthday knowing he'd lose them like he always did. And had a back up every year.

Hannah taught Icabod how to sword fight.

And how to swim.

She tucked him and the other little ones in and read them bed time stories.

Most of which she'd made up.

He loved each and every one.

Hannah jump roped with Skelebar.

No matter how many times she fell over.

No matter how many teeth she lost.

All to see Skelebar laugh and giggle.

She made her a cake on her birthday which wasn't easy and burned her hand but didn't complain.

She'd do anything to see that girl smile.

She did her hair and learned how to paint nails.

Everything for her.

She named Atlas.

She taught him how to talk and walk.

She handmade him toys and clothes.

She gave him Cuddles and sent him off to school.

She fought anyone who looked at him or Skelebar or Levi or Fiona funny.

Because she loved them all with every fiber of her being and then some.

So yeah. Hannah wasn't anyone's big sister, biologically. But she was one in spirit and heart. And via actions. And that was what counted, right?

Steve was fascinated by your intelligence the moment you joined the team after S.H.I.E.L.D. was dismantled. It didn’t take long for your friendship to blossom into a relationship. You both made up a secret alphabet to communicate in your own language, with him being able to remember it and hell, after a few months of leaving cute notes for each other, you had memorized it too. It was nearly a year into your relationship when the issues with the Sokovia Accords arose. As you stayed back in New York as if you weren’t a superhero, you were devastated by the news replaying the events in Germany. After weeks of being questioned, the CIA made the same conclusion that you did, Steve had abandoned you the same as he abandoned his title.

Three months later, you received a small box at your door with no return address.

It was a double sided locket. One side had a picture of you and Steve from when you first got together, the other side held a note in your secret language. Upon decoding it read,

It took about two weeks to coordinate your big plan but you made it to the coordinates in Bolivia as fast as you could. You requested room sixteen which they reluctantly gave to you after you paid extra. You looked all over the hotel room trying to find something he would’ve left you. The bathroom, the nightstands, the tile, the carpet, the tv guide, underneath chairs, anything but still nothing. Finally resting back on the bed your eyes made contact with the blue painting across from you.

“He wouldn’t.”

You muttered to yourself before getting up and taking the photo off the frame. Delicately peeling off the back you saw a message hinting about a numbers station. Getting out your radio and some granola bars out of your backpack you began to search for it. You weren’t sure when exactly you had fallen asleep but by the looks of it it was halfway through the decoding process.

It took another few days trying to translate the message to figure out he had run it through a cypher. With a sigh you went back to the picture frame to study the message again.

I like to think that our song plays constantly on the radio in 4/4 time.

He must have set the alphabet off by either 8 or 16. You just had to find out which. You ventured out into the city to get some actual food and a few cups of coffee before going back to work.

South America was the first place the group went to after leaving Bucky in Wakanda. They didn’t get to remain long, but they were there long enough for him to set up a signal and a trail for you to follow. When they finally made it to Alesund to Natasha’s dismay he decided to stay instead of going with them to help Yelena in Armenia. This was the start of his fourth month alone in Norway. He held a job as a lumberjack and his beard definitely sold the part. He was almost worried that if you ever did make it to him you wouldn’t like his new look. It was Friday night and he was out for his late night walk, stopping by the church. Walking to the back side of the church he was ready to sit on the hill and continue to read when he noticed some scratches on the siding. He sighed. He couldn’t believe that you would actually deface a church building just to leave a code for him. Looking down, Steve noticed a green button settled perfectly into the dirt. With a small smile, he bent down and unearthed it, seeing a vial underneath it. Picking up the vial he noticed a piece of paper inside. After quickly unscrewing the cap and tapping the paper out he unrolled it.

“How long have you been here?” He asked, still cupping your face in his hands.

“Five days.”

“What if someone followed you? Have you been-”

You sighed, “No one is going to be looking for me.”

“How do you know that?”

“I faked my own death… I waited until I left Bolivia to have the person I paid set it all up. I was worried if I did it too soon you would read about it and stop waiting for me.”

“I would’ve waited my entire life. Nat already was upset that I didn’t go with her and Sam, but I needed to wait for you.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.” He said with a small smile before kissing you once again.

When you woke up in the morning to his beard tickling your neck and back, he groggily pulled you back to him. “What’s so funny?”

“I’m not used to the beard yet, it tickles.”

“I’m sorry, baby.”

“Don’t be.” You told him before reaching your hand up and behind you to play with his grown out hair, “Where to now?”

He let out a happy hum as your fingertips lightly stroked his scalp, “Uhm, I have a cabin about five kilometers out of town. After that I can get in touch with Sam. He’s been camping out in Brunei. I just want to enjoy this moment a little bit longer.”

"What did Kun say?" Doyoung's eyes followed Taeyong as he strode back to the room. Fourteen heads peered at him curiously as he silently slipped his phone back into his pocket.

"The announcement was also blasted to them. WayV are also considered as candidates."

"And…?" Yuta asked slowly, urging him to continue.

"They said they won't participate."

A collective round of sighs echoed around the room. I slumped back on my seat in relief despite knowing this doesn't entirely solve the problem. Not even a few heartbeats after and a stillness settled over the crowd of men again, not a single soul wanting to bring up the elephant in the room.

Finally, a boy with almond-shaped eyes spoke up from his seat by the stairs. The vulnerable look on his face made the fact that he was the one asking the question much worse.

"And us…? Nobody is going to participate from us, right?" Jungwoo asked with a hopeful tone as his eyes scanned over the room. Nobody made a sound at first until Taeyong finally sighed and decided to speak out again.

"I can't really speak for all of us. I understand how heavy and important the situation is. Being the Don...is a very big deal. I wouldn't take it against anyone here if someone wants to give it a try," he said as he ran his fingers through his hair.

"Taeyong, you know if you do want to give it a go, 127 will back you—"

"I'm not planning on it, Taeil-hyung," he politely, but firmly interjected before the eldest of the group could even finish.

The current stand of the group didn't really surprise me that much. Each member of NCT are ranked as capos, the generals of a crime family—with everyone managing a small cluster of lower-tier soldiers and associates—but each sub-group has their own internal ranking as separate units. Taeyong and Kun are currently the de facto leaders of 127 and WayV, while the responsibility is shared between Jeno and Mark for Dream.

"How about Dream?" Doyoung decided to ask the youngest of the crew. Jeno and Mark exchanged glances before the latter finally spoke up.

"We're not planning on it either," Mark replied, speaking for his group.

"Yeah, Chenle and Jisung can barely remember to eat three times a day, imagine them trying to be a Don," Renjun added, though his usual snark and sass was a little bit dulled this time.

"I just don't understand what is happening," Doyoung said in frustration, crossing his arms over his chest. "So there is a need for a new head, but why make it a competition? Couldn't they just pick candidates and choose? It's not really like freedom of choice is a thing here."

"I think this is the first time that a Don blatantly waived the code, too," Johnny added as he leaned back against the stairs. "It's like they're inviting us to kill each other."

"But we won't, right? We won't do that," Jungwoo asked again, his eyes wide. Taeyong noticed the panic in his voice and he reached out to him to squeeze his shoulder.

"Of course, Jungwoo. There won't be any problems with us."

"Well, if none of us are participating, I guess we won't have any problems. They'll have to think of other ways to choose the new Don," Haechan said from his seat by the floor. The rest murmured their relief in response.

"That doesn’t solve anything." For the first time since the meeting ended, I found my voice again. Everyone turned to look at me, probably surprised by my presence after being so quiet for so long. My throat felt dry, but I pushed myself to speak.

"The position is open to anyone. Soldiers, associates, everyone, including the underlings you manage." Slowly, my eyes lifted to meet some of the confused faces as my words started to sink in. "Even Cypher."

The mention of the name itself made some faces in the crowd go stone cold. While NCT is considered the most influential within the family, it is not the only organized group in the brotherhood. It has always been the ruling steel hand over Seoul, but Cypher acts as their counterpart, reigning over Busan. Of course, just like any dysfunctional family, competition runs high between the two groups. Cypher, in particular, has always been after NCT out of plain, egotistic jealousy. In fact, the rivalry runs so high and tense that everyone knows the only reason the two groups haven't tried to blatantly kill each other yet was because of the code of loyalty and honor the family followed.

And now even that is gone.

"Maybe we should talk to Jihoon…" Jaehyun suggested, though his tone clearly shows his aversion towards the idea.

"There is no way I will talk to that asshole," Taeyong interjected, his voice barely concealing venom. He turned around in frustration and ran a hand through his face. "Fuck. We have to think this over."

I silently watched everyone from my seat, my stomach tied in knots. I felt like death, especially after my eyes ran over the young faces of the kids who will surely get caught in the crossfire once shit starts to hit the fan. He did this on purpose...the Don. Like the calculating, manipulative man he is, he set-up a stage to force everyone to fall into the roles he expected them to play. He knew that a neutral invite for anyone to prove their worth wouldn't stop at just people playing nice. With the code gone, everyone is also free to get rid of potential competition.

As if having enemies outside is not enough, he has now opened the possibility of a bloodbath inside the family itself.

"...to prepare." My attention snapped back to Taeyong as he addressed the group. "Watch your backs especially when dealing with your soldiers and associates. I'm sure there will be more than a handful who will be after our necks."

"As for Cypher…" his eyes moved towards me and I met his gaze, already knowing what he will say next. "Can you help us track their movements? You'll be our first line of defense," he asked, almost sounding apologetic about it. I tried giving him a firm nod despite my stomach feeling hollow. This is the least I can do.

"Of course."

He finally managed a small smile before turning towards the others again. "Good. Right now, we really can't do anything but trust each other."

Please allow me to tell you about one of my favourite cartoons through this informal essay I did for school a couple of months back.

Gravity Falls and How it Did The Unimaginable

**SPOILERS... KINDA**

The 2010s saw the creation of some of the most iconic animated tv shows ever made, the likes of Adventure Time (2010), Steven Universe (2013), Over the Garden Wall (2014) and The Legend of Korra (2012). To explain why this era’s shows are so admirable is honestly rather difficult. Yet, there are many factors that can be taken into consideration when looking for an answer.

The past decade was very successful in perfecting their craft and utilizing the animated format to their favour, creating some of the wackiest and fascinating cartoons ever made. With the advancements made in both 2D and 3D animation for film, this bled into the world of TV as well.

To mention that 2010s cartoons have stunning visuals would be an understatement. Everything about the animation was beautiful; the strong colour palettes, the clean and imaginative character designs, the colourful and immersive backgrounds and especially the mesmerizing worlds that can be found within episodes that are half an hour.

This era’s cartoons also led to a massive shift in storytelling, writing longer-running stories that spread out across seasons while also swapping out episodic adventures for serialization. This heavily aided in the popularization of these shows, due to the rise of internet fandoms and dropping the taboo that cartoons were only for kids. Many shows acknowledged their older viewers by leaving clues and even puzzles to be solved by the theorists who have a large appearance on social media platforms like Reddit, Twitter and Tumblr. As the shows progressed, their fandoms created many theories for what they believed might happen within their favourite series. The top three shows from this era all utilized these changes, being at the forefront of the shift and helping guide the creative vision of 2010s cartoons.

Often regarded as many people’s favourite cartoon, Gravity Falls presented one of the best mysteries of the decade with two seasons and only 40 episodes. Inspired by Twin Peaks and The X-Files, it’s considered as the kids’ version of these two iconic shows as this cartoon acts as many people’s first introduction to horror through bright colours and fun characters.

This series follows the adventures of Dipper and Mabel Pines, twins, who are sent to spend their summer with their great-uncle or Grunkle Stan in Gravity Falls, Oregon. This town is full of oddities like supernatural creatures, insane and eccentric inhabitants, and many puzzles. The Pines twins must adjust to the weirdness while uncovering the mysteries and protecting their new town.

While living in Gravity Falls, the twins are forced to work in the Mystery Shack, a tourist trap created by their Grunkle Stan that overcharges unlucky tourists, teaching about fake monsters despite there being real creatures all over town. On his first day in Oregon, Dipper accidentally came across a mysterious journal written by an unknown author that explains all the oddities to be found in this strange town. This book acts like an encyclopedic of the Weird for Dipper, an inquisitive 12-year-old kid who seeks answers.

Dipper is an extremely intelligent kid, his brain being far more developed than his body. He’s rather awkward and self-conscious as he often stumbles over his words or gets embarrassed trying to talk to girls. Despite this, the boy is an adventurer at heart who just wants to grow up and skip his upcoming teenage years.

While Mabel is quite the opposite in many ways, she is loud and has an in-your-face personality. Mabel is bouncy and fun, she is so excited to start high school. She is easily excitable and for the larger part of the series, she is in her boy-crazy phase. Mabel is a girly-girl as she likes all things; glitter, unicorns, rainbows, partying and crafting. Yet, she doesn’t often compare well with many of the other girls in town, they see her as weird and “too much”.

(In all fairness through, it is not too kind to either of the characters as their personalities are more complex than just awkward nerd and artsy girl-girly.)

Dipper and Mabel’s personalities are very different but somehow, they—along with their Gravity Falls family—manage to solve mysteries and save the town, multiple times.

Gravity Falls is an honestly genius series that completely changed the way cartoons were made. Originally when writing a series, you’d create a base of your story; characters, the universe and a basic plot. Yet, when creator, Alex Hirsch (who was in his early/mid-20)s and his small team first began constructing their show, they planned out everything they could possibly think of for the first season. Additionally, outlining some answers for their biggest mysteries that would be answered at the end of the series.

Despite being rated TV-Y7, this series really pushed the boundaries of kids’ television. From the teeth being ripped out of a deer’s mouth by a demon, rearranging the functions of every hole on a man’s face to an aggressive pop-rock sock puppet show that ended in a dramatic slow-motion scene of the puppets burning. Gravity Falls wasn’t afraid to get a little weird or creepy. Or create some genuine nightmare fuel.

From the beginning, Gravity Falls had built a mystery into its series, hiding secrets and clues all throughout the show. Most notably were the backwards-recorded message and cryptograms, using roughly nine different kinds, even creating two of their own.

The inclusion of cyphers and mysteries for fans to solve is possibly the reason why this series was so successful. As one of the first shows to do something like this, Gravity Falls used social media and internet fandoms to its advantage.

As mentioned earlier, cartoon fans have quite a presence on social media platforms like Twitter and Tumblr. They create theories and share fun ideas about their favourite shows. Viewers of Adventure Time, Gravity Falls and Steven Universe were all included in their share of theory fun.

Sometimes, fan theories end up being correct but when you’re Gravity Falls creator, Alex Hirsch, you don’t just watch from the sidelines as your viewers figure out the biggest mystery of your show. No, you create a hoax to get your viewers off your trail and that is what he did. Around 2013, only halfway through the first season of the show, viewers had started to follow the clues, theorizing who was the author is Dipper’s mysterious journal.

Unfortunately for the Gravity Falls production crew, the viewers were right— for the sake of readers who have never seen the show, I will not mention who the author was as it would be the biggest spoiler.

In 2013, a supposed leaked image of a tv showing a younger version of the show’s crazy old man character, Old Man McGucket, writing in the infamous journal was uploaded anonymously (by Alex Hirsch) to 4Chan.

Despite the image only being on up for a few hours, it spread like wildfire. Much to the team’s success, theorists stopped searching for the answer to “who is the author” and just accepted the image of McGucket as the truth.

To further push the fake-out, three words were posted to Alex’s Twitter, “fuming right now.”

The tweet was deleted a few minutes later and fans genuinely believed that someone from the Gravity Falls team had leaked the most important part of the story.

While doing research, I came across a Reddit post from April 10th, 2013, the day after ‘leak,’ Alex’s tweet was uploaded. In this post, user, TheoDW uploaded an image of Alex’s tweet with the caption, “It seems that Hirsch got mad at last night’s leak. He already deleted this tweet.”

Seeing the reactions of these Redditors in 2013 is kind of weird and crazy to look at. “He has every right to be upset. Someone internally released a plot revealing screen shot of series breaking spoiler information,” a deleted Reddit account commented.

“This is Alex Hirsch’s biggest success by far, he spent a huge amount of time carefully planning out the series, and then in a moment someone releases a major spoiler. It would make anyone upset,” the user, Time_Loop commented.

“Seriously, this is a nightmare for a storyteller, and shows a breach of trust. I feel so bad for him–honestly, I hope whoever did the leak gets caught and appropriate action is taken. You don’t f–k with someone’s story like this. It’s unprofessional.” the user, lonelybeloved angrily commented.

In 2014, this ‘leak’ was finally disproven when viewers were given an episode on McGucket’s backstory and an amazing tweet from Alex Hirsch.

Alex had post an image of himself playfully pointing at a monitor with the supposed leaked picture with the caption, “1) Make hoax 2) Upload to 4Chan 3) Post angry tweet about "leak" 4) Delete tweet 5) Let internet do rest”

It is so interesting to look at these comments know that all of this was orchestrated by Alex.

I wish I had been old enough at the time to follow theories and fandom stuff like I do now with current cartoons but really looking at this from an outside perspective, this was insane!

The real author wasn’t revealed until 2015 and when viewers first got the answer to this biggest show on their screens, they must have freaked out!

Following the finale in 2016, a single frame of a stone version of Bill Cipher, the show’s villain, flashed in after the credits had finished.

Alex Hirsch and his team actually created a real-life statue of their villain for their viewers to find and on July 20th, 2016, the Cipher Hunt began.

By following clues, the Hunters found themselves all over the world; Russia, Japan and then travelling throughout the United States for the final 12 clues. When the hunt took them to Los Angeles, actor, Jason Ritter (voice of Dipper Pines, also a massive fan of the series) and Alex Hirsch’s twin sister, Ariel Hirsch (the inspiration for Mabel) joined in the fun helping the search.

Finally, the hunt ended on August 2nd when someone tweeted out an image of the found statue in Oregon, the same state in which the fictional town of Gravity Falls exists. The Cipher Hunt had ended but finding the statue wasn’t Alex’s goal for the scavenger hunt, it was about the journey and bringing together the viewers, more than having them actually find the statue.

Creating its own hoax, an international scavenger hunt and quite a bit of nightmare fuel, Gravity Falls was a show truly unlike any other.

The 2010s saw some of the strongest cartoons ever made, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls and Steven Universe acting as the leaders for multiple different changes in the medium; storytelling, worldbuilding, interaction with viewers, utilizing social media, representation and further pushing music into the cartoon world. From what was created this past decade and what has already been released in 2020, I’m so excited to see what comes next.

Dragon Age 4 Short Stories

To celebrate Dragon Age Day 2020 with us, BioWare surprised everyone with a new version of the Dragon Age site and 4 short stories and illustrations. These short stories are heavily related to some chapters in Tevinter Nights.

The Next One

Tells us of Grey Warden Lwrence who’s already in the Deep Roads for the Calling, and despite his condition continues to fight, even as he could be about to die, when he hears someone in danger he goes to the rescue and this catches the attention of a spirit of Perseverance. The spirit takes possession of the body just long enough to save a dwarven girl and a sort of promise is made, that in return she saves the next person who may need it. The Grey Warden dies, Perseverance returns to the Fade, and the dwarven girl , Evka, becomes the Grey Warden from Tevinter Nights’ “Hunger”.

Ruins of Reality

Strife, whom we previously read about in Tevinter Nights’ “Three trees to midnight”, is in the Arlathan Forest, witnessing some sort of anomaly that defies his perception of time and space, and possibly of himself, as he tries to find his way in a maze where he can watch himself from moments ago heading into the same trouble he just barely got alive from. Holding a magical journal, a relic of Clan Morlyn that writes its own entries, trying to follow directions to find a powerful artifact, he finally reaches a point of reference, a Ghilan’nain statue holding a crystal halla figurine. Irelin shows up and both realise what they’ve been experiencing is very old magic, ancient. The shapeshifter turns into an eagle and takes the figurine while Strife has no option but to play bait to dangerous sylvans, and once the figurine is gone the forest suddenly, eerily, returns to normal.

The Wake

In this story we meet again some of the many Crows Tevinter Nights introduced. Viago and Teia from Eight Little Talons (previously from the comic Deception), and Illario from The Wigmaker Job. The latter is drunk and the other two are trying to get him away safely. Someone important, someone dear appears to have died and they were just at the wake. Illario laments the death of his cousin Lucanis, and drunkenly reminisces and tells anecdotes until his fellow Crows put him to bed.

Minrathous Shadows

At an unidentified establishment, a magister lady is playing cards when a man sits at the table. The magister identifies him as a Templar based on his appearance and he joins the game, taunting the magister on her low bet as the dealer hands the cards. The Templar is named Tarquin, and he rises the stakes with a ledger that he implies contains information implicating this magister to the Venatori. She denies it, of course, and carries on with the game. Tarquin doesn’t have a winning hand -he wasn’t really there to play cards- so when the magister wins the hand, she tries to teach him not to threaten her. Magic begins to gather at her fist but is suddenly countered, nullified, and then she notices the dealer; shocked, she seems to identify them as “the Viper”, and claims they’re supposed to be “just a tale”. When Tarquin is about to leave the magister asks him who are they, what do they want, is it gold? Is it power? The Templar tells her they are the Tevinter they forgot. What could they want then? From behind the magister, the dealer put up his hood. “Everything.”

While the first three short stories call back to Tevinter Nights in both location and characters, Minrathous Shadows, with Tarquin and the Viper -and whatever tale is spun around that name- are new elements, and i’ll get to that soon.

As these are very short stories i’ll try a quick anaylisis.

The Next One: serves as a sort of “origin story” to Warden Evka, and also illustrates how spirits can work. Spirits are drawn, not only to where the Veil is thin or where there’s blood and violence and negative emotions and desires, but also to good intentions, hopes and values. Perseverance lends its force to Warden Lawrence when he, fatally wounded, still wanted to fight to save one more life, and when that last and desperate goal is achieved, Perseverance leaves.

Ruins of Reality: The journal from Clan Morlyn sounds suspiciously similar to the Emergent Compendium, a tome that writes itself found at the Black Emporium in Act 3 of DA2. As described in the codex entry, it produces pictures and lines of gibberish, which are writen in a cypher; the last entry recorded is in reference to Fen’Harel. So to have the elves Strife and Irelin searching through an enchanted Arlathan Forest for a powerful artifact using a journal that one day started writing its own entries, well, there’s got to be something there. Specially considering as well the illustration that accompanies this story, where Strife is seen wearing clothes with suspended metal golden triangles much like one of the concept art pieces (that i insist could very well be ancient Elves and/or temple guardians.. Arlathan Forest has to have a temple or two)

The Wake: personally i loved Lucanis Dellamorte and refuse to believe he has died before we got to see him shine in 4K. He was the grandson of the First Talon, leader of the Antivan Crows, and he was most likely set to follow in her steps and become First Talon himself eventually, but that’s not a fate he desires and there’s no denying Grandma Dellamorte, so...he could have easily faked his death in order to escape that. And the reason Illario is so broken about it is because in order to make it safer and more believable, he wasn’t informed of the plan. And this is the theory i’m running with until and unless BW reveals something different. Viago and Teia are suspiciously unaffected by the loss of Lucanis and we could say maybe they didn’t know him enough to care, but i’m saying maybe they know he’s not really dead.

Minrathous Shadows: Tarquin is a templar and we know Templars in Tevinter are little more than law enforcement, they lack the templar powers their counterparts from the South have, which would explain the contempt the magister woman has for him on sight. A Tevinter Templar is hardly a threat to the power of a Magister, that’s why in response to his threat she attempts to strike him with magic she knows he can’t fight back. But she’s stopped by this other new character. Someone who the magister points out should be “just a tale”. And i suspect this would make the Viper a Templar who can actually counter magic, something that by all means seems is not allowed to exist in Tevinter. She was just accused of having ties with the Venatori, going against current Tevinter law, and maybe thinks she can get away with a bribe, but that won’t cut it. These new characters now claim to be “the Tevinter you forgot” and want “everything”. There are easily more than one way to read into that. Can’t be the Venatori, they were all about returning to past Imperium glory which was lost, not forgotten. No, what we get in this story tastes more like a claim for justice, like what the Tevinter the Magister, the powerful and self-absorbed, have forgotten is everyone else. I think this Viper and Tarquin could be part of a rebellion that’s been brewing in Tevinter for quite some time. Maybe they work with the Lucernis, maybe they are part of the Lucernis themselves, or belong to a different faction, but seems they’re ready to take the Magisterium trash out. Another possibility is they are Siccaris, Tevinter spies, working for the goverment cleaning house, the mention of complicity with Venatori being considered treason by the government adds to this. Either way, colour me excited about these two. Last note here, while we have nothing on the Viper but the name, Tarquin’s name has appeared before in lore, in a codex entry from Inquisition titled “Shriek”, as an entry in the Blighted Codex, a collection of studies on Darkspawn kept in the Imperial Library at Minrathous and accessible only to the Magisterium. Tells the story of the son of a Magister named Tarquin who was the sole survivor of a darkspawn attack on his unit. He was shocked, speechless, having nightmares, eventually improving only to speak the word “Shriek” over and over again. There’s no indication of when this recorded darkspawn attack took place, could have been centuries ago. And really all we can get for sure from this is that Tarquin is a Tevinter name.

That’s it for now, please correct me if there is something about the Viper somewhere, i’m really not finding anything (other than vipers being snakes and snakes being symbolically smaller dragons and both snakes and dragons being literally on the Tevinter flag)

Gorillaz: G-Sides

I have no idea how I came into possession of my copy of G-Sides. Most likely I copped it from my dad but it's just as likely to be a Christmas gift of some sort. Either way, I'm glad I got this album. This album of b-sides and remixes was always fun to listen to due to being given out in the Gorillaz more experimental days. It's always nice to see what gets left on the cutting room floor. Might find a Sausage Truck scene on there.

1. 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix)

Already talked about this one and my laziness in the last review. So, I will be transferring the score.

2. Latin Simone

The English version I alluded to in the last review. Damon Albarn is my favorite singer of all time and his melancholic crooning in this track is one of the reasons I've stuck with him for two decades. I love to imagine surreal images to go with this song while I lied on the floor in my bedroom with the TV off. Deep stuff, bro. Or nice to pretend to be deep to.

3. 19-2000 (The Wiseguys House of Wisdom remix)

Finally, a competent techno remix of this song. Probably not the best one and definitely not my favorite cover (we'll get to that later) but it manages to not offend my eardrums while allowing my foot to tap to a beat. And honestly, isn't that all we can ask for?

4. The Sounder

Fuck, this song slaps. These guys manage to hype Gorillaz up so much that they should have been paid to be kept on standby during their tours. I love this song so much, I only got one major problem with it: that person whisper singing during the chorus. WHAT ARE YOU HIDING FROM ME?!

5. Faust

This is an awesome semi-instrumental. Great piano, great effects, great use of Japanese children singing. There needs to be more Japanese children singing in western music. I just don't know how to explain the appeal to music executives.

6. Clint Eastwood (Phi Life Cypher version)

Oh, FUCK HELL YES. I love Del, I swear that I do. But this version blows the original out of the fucking water. Man, if only there was a way we could mix this version with the original version and create the the ultimate version of Clint Eastwood?

7. Ghost Train

Love the inflection Damon gave his voice in this one. Sounds kind of like a mourning woman until he...well, he doesn't. I loved singing this song and used every excuse to sing it when I could. Like when I was playing Kingdom Hearts 2 and hopped on the trolley while doing the seven mysteries shit. I kept singing "I got suicide for my baby" and my older brother had to call me out for being morbid. Good times.

8. Hip Albatross

Now this is how you sample! Gotta love Gorillaz' affection and borderline fetish for classic zombie films. Still, this is a pretty chill track. More musicians should incorporate the sounds of zombies moaning into their music. Missed fad there.

Hmmm...pretty relaxed way to end a track. Also pretty nice of Murdoc to give 2D a song to brag about himself in. Of course, he would blow him out of the water with his own titled track but that's a story for another day...

Next week...may or may not be fun for me. Laika Come Home is my least favorite Gorillaz album. Now, I've only listened to it once and back when I listened to it, I didn't have a healthy respect for reggae. Now that I'm older with a more refined taste, we'll see if my opinion was well-founded or not. Either way, see you or not.

Biggest Movie Traitors and Backstabbers in Cinema

Last week, as part of the streaming service’s ongoing plan to bring Warner Brothers’ slate of theatrical releases to audiences at home HBO Max premiered Judas and the Black Messiah on the same day it opened in theaters. Directed by Shaka King, the incendiary historical drama centers on the rise of Fred Hampton, the charismatic Black Panther Party leader, and his tragic betrayal at the hands of FBI informant William O’Neal. Daniel Kaluuya stars as Hampton, a scorched-earth performance that attempts to recreate the magnetism and magma-like intensity of the revolutionary figure, but Kaluuya is somehow not the star of the film.

The film’s true protagonist is O’Neal, played by LaKeith Stanfield. After getting himself into some hot water, O’Neal is propositioned by FBI agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons) to either infiltrate the Black Panther Party and report back on his findings or face jail time. At first O’Neal seems to luxuriate in the kickbacks he’s given by Mitchell for his intel but he quickly learns how dangerous it is to lead a double life. O’Neal also has to try to reconcile betraying the very movement he’s spent real time and energy trying to build.

Stanfield’s performance is filled with queasy anxiety and paranoia but also cockroach-like survival tics. It’s an all-time great turncoat performance, worthy of the biblical reference in the film’s title. To honor Stanfield’s turn as “Wild” Bill O’Neil, here’s a countdown of some of cinema’s greatest backstabbers.

Fredo Corleone – The Godfather Part II (1974)

Fredo Corleone, the least intelligent and most ineffectual of Don Vito’s children, has become something of a pejorative term used against anyone deemed to be the lesser sibling in a famous family. Played with a sense of melancholy and knowing pity by esteemed character actor John Cazale, Fredo’s betrayal of his brother Michael is due more to petty jealousy than it is to Machiavellian scheming or dreams of leading the Corelone Crime Family.

As the character pathetically rages, “‘Send Fredo off to do this. Send Fredo off to do that. Let Fredo take care of some Mickey Mouse night club somewhere’… I can handle things! I’m smart! Not like everybody says!” The worst part about Fredo’s actions against his family is that it’s unclear if Fredo actually knew what was being planned against his brother or whether he was just blindly jumping at the opportunity to be important and have something for himself.

Lando Calrissian – Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Perhaps the most lovable backstabber on the list, Lando at least shows some backbone and tries to make up for his nearly unforgivable alliance with the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader. While serving as Baron Administrator of Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back, Lando is visited by Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett and told to help trap his old friend Han Solo and the Rebels seeking sanctuary in Cloud City in exchange for the safety of the city’s citizens.

After selling his friend out, Lando has a change of heart when he overhears Han being tortured and realizes that Vader and the Empire were already reneging on their promises. He helps Leia and Chewbacca escape, and is able to evacuate Cloud City before the Empire is able to retaliate. Later he participates in the near-incompressible plot to rescue Han Solo and serves as a key general in the Rebel Alliance. Still, even back when he’s on the wrong side of the fight, Billy Dee Williams is able to turn Lando an appealing character, making his eventual redemption that much sweeter.

Henry Hill – Goodfellas (1990)

Ray Liotta plays the ultimate rat. After a long and fruitful career as a capo for local boss Paulie Cicero, Henry Hill’s mafia lifestyle comes to a final, screeching halt after he’s arrested by narcotics agents while trying to facilitate unapproved drug deals with his Pittsburgh associates. Henry’s good friend Tommy jokingly posits that Henry would crack under questioning earlier in the film, but Henry’s damning testimony against his associates Jimmy Conway and Paulie is all about survival: Henry knows that if he doesn’t cover his own ass, Jimmy will have him and his wife killed.

Becoming the very thing that mafioso’s hate most of all, Henry turns on his friends and is forced into the witness protection program. All Henry ever wanted was to be a gangster, but in the protection program, he’s reduced to “an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook.” It’s a fate that may be worse than death for him.

Mr. Orange – Reservoir Dogs (1992)

Arguably the villain of the story, depending on who’s side you’re on, Mr. Orange is actually L.A.P.D. undercover cop Freddy Newandyke. Looking to bring down crime boss Joe Cabot, Mr. Orange infiltrates his crew and takes part in diamond heist gone bad. In the ensuing chaos, Mr. Orange is shot and ends up killing an innocent civilian in retaliation. Played by Tim Roth, Mr. Orange screams and cries as he believes he’s fatally wounded, but it’s also possible that he’s airing out the guilt he feels in letting his undercover operation get so out of hand.

Without going into all of the bloodshed in the conclusion of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, Mr. Orange’s double agent status is so sound that it eventually leads to the demise of almost all of Cabot’s colorful crew, and Orange then feels compelled to confess his deception, resulting in an ambiguous ending that most believe concludes with his death.

Dennis Nedry – Jurassic Park (1993)

Wayne Knight’s Dennis Nedry is probably the most cartoonish Benedict Arnold of the bunch, and if you think about it, the only human antagonist in the original Jurassic Park film, if you’re not counting short-sighted, megalomaniacal John Hammond. The slovenly Nedry is chief architect of the computer system at the fledgling Jurassic Park theme park, and he’s miffed by perceived low pay. So he decides to take an offer from Lewis Dodgson (“DODGSON, WE GOT DODGSON HERE!) of rival biotech company Biosyn to steal embryos of 15 dinosaur species in exchange for $61,500,000.

To make his grand escape with the embryos, Nedry shuts down the park’s security systems, including the electric fences surrounding the dinosaur paddocks. He also uploads a self-aggrandizing computer virus to prevent the systems from being quickly turned back on. However, a perfect combination of his own harebrained scheme and a nasty storm leaves Nedry stranded and at the mercy of a young Dilophosaurus. It does not end well.

Cypher – The Matrix (1999)

Cypher’s betrayal of the Nebuchadnezzar crew in The Matrix is pretty easy to see coming, and not just because the character is played by Joe Pantoliano, who’s portrayed many malcontents throughout his career. Cypher being a red pill dabbler and wishes he had taken the blue pill instead. He also outwardly makes his disapproval of Morpheus known throughout the movie. Using “ignorance is bliss” as his mantra, he strikes a deal with Agent Smith to return him to the Matrix and erase his memory of ever awakening from it in exchange for selling Morpheus out.

Jurassic World: Top Jurassic Park Deaths by Dinosaurs

After tipping Smith off to a meeting with the Oracle, Cypher goes full villain and unflinchingly kills Dozer, Apoc, and Switch before finally being stopped and killed. At least he’s free from the reality he hated so much.

“Mad Eye Moody” (aka Barty Crouch Jr.) – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)

What’s a bigger betrayal: Death Eater Barty Crouch Jr. revealing that he’s been impersonating Alator “Mad Eye” Moody for the entirety of Harry Potter’s fourth year at Hogwarts, or Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling revealing herself to be a transphobe, betraying many of the themes of her beloved book series? We’ll leave that one to you, dear reader.

However, Barty Crouch Jr. (David Tennant before he was the Doctor) memorably betrays Harry Potter and the Hogwarts community by using the Polyjuice Potion to impersonate the former Auror and ensure that Harry would get into the Triwizard Tournament and ascend to the Third Task, which was a trap to help Lord Voldemort return to a body of his own. At least the real Mad Eye didn’t actually turn his back on those that revered him (like Rowling).

Colin Sullivan – The Departed (2006)

The biggest rat in a film full of “gnawing, cheese-eating fucking rats,” Sgt. Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is the criminal counterpoint to Leonardo DiCaprio’s undercover cop Billy Costigan, an undercover gangster who serves as the personal mole to Irish mob boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson).

Played with smarm and cowardice by Damon, Sullivan eventually double crosses the police and Costello when he discovers that Costello is an FBI informant—a rat leading rats. Scared but trying to retain his high-ranking job, Sullivan misguidedly tries to position himself as a hero and tie up all loose ends, resulting in a shocking, bloody finale that finds cocky Colin Sullivan miraculously as the last man standing. Or at least the last man standing for the moment, as a final, forgotten loose end returns to give the audience what they want; another dead rat.

Robert Ford – The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

Well, it’s all right there in the title, innit? Played with a jealous, insecure bent by a creepy (in multiple ways) Casey Affleck, Robert Ford starts off as a Jesse James fanboy, desperate to join the outlaw’s gang with his brother Charlie (Sam Rockwell). When he finally gets close to the mythical criminal (a shadowy Brad Pitt), Bob begins to resent the man, eventually brokering a deal with the Governor of Missouri to either capture or kill Jesse James in exchange for a substantial bounty and full pardon.

Bob Ford cozies up to Jesse James even further, eventually earning the man’s complete trust, before cowardly shooting the man in the back—although in the film both carry an air of expectation that it needs to happen. Ford then lives out the rest of his days known as the coward punk that betrayed Jesse James until his eventual murder.

Aaron Burr – Hamilton (2020)

Close knit allies but ideological opposites, Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton both fought in the Continental Army for independence from the British. However, when it came time to actual govern the new country that they fought to begin, the men drifted apart.

It’s unfair to call Burr the only backstabber in this relationship, because both men betray their former friend. Burr (Leslie Odom Jr.) becomes jealous that Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda) constantly has George Washington’s ear, and switches political parties to defeat Hamilton’s father-in-law in an election, ending their mutual admiration.

Burr also inadvertently pressures Hamilton to publicly reveal an affair, which strains the rivals’ relationships even further. However, when Hamilton endorses Thomas Jefferson (Daveed Diggs) in the third presidential election, a man that he doesn’t even like, to block Burr’s political malleability from the presidency, it becomes the final straw for Burr, who challenges Hamilton to a duel. In the ensuing gunfight, Hamilton throws away his shot, and Burr seals his fate to be remembered as the villain who killed Alexander Hamilton.
