Finrod from The Warning Sounds Too Late
The Warning Sounds Too Late
Part 18 of The Atandil Series Rating: T Relationships: Finrod/Bëor, Finrod & Maedhros, Finrod & Gildor, background Fingon/Maedhros, Finrod & everybody at this dinner basically Characters: Finrod, Bëor, Gildor, Angrod, Eldalótë, Orodreth, Orodreth's wife, Finduilas, Aegnor, Fingon, Maedhros, Maglor, Original characters Word Count: 6,218
“Blessed was the joining of your forbearers’ souls, and blessed are we by the fruit of their labor.” Eldalótë stood at one corner of the table with a slim chalice raised in salute, first to the king at her left, then to her husband at the foot of the table. “May joy be upon what joy hath wrought!” “And may Elbereth make light to shine upon you!” came the echo along the length of the table, the clinking of glasses, the laughter rippling like a brook. Balan sipped from his cup and let his eyes drift over the little assembly. They were strange, these feasting customs of the Nómin—the ritual washing each of another’s hands, the bread broken and passed to the guest at one’s side, the form of the toasts, indeed the gathering itself. “Do you celebrate birth’s remembrance among your kind?” he had asked once in Estolad, curiosity piqued as Nóm watched the merriment of Belen’s feast with rapt fascination. “Or does the counting become too cumbersome?” “Nay,” Nóm had flashed a sidelong grin, “tis the day of begetting that we celebrate.” And Balan had laughed, thinking him in jest, till the king’s look of earnest confusion told him otherwise, and then he laughed still more in bemusement. It was the crude term Nóm had used in his assertion—the trouble, Balan teased him later, that came of learning a language through prodding about in another’s head. The vocabulary thus gleaned was only as respectable as the mind he plumbed.

Non-Canon Silm Friendships that I love
Ok, not really completely non-canon but I love Fingon, Maedhros, Maglor, & Finrod as a quartet.
Eldest son trio + Noldorin bard trio = Logical friend group.
Even though I don’t see Finrod as super close to any of them except Fingon (who I HC was like an older brother to him & is his 2nd closest cousin after Turgon), I feel like he still adds balance to what would otherwise be a trio where someone is definitely 3rd wheeling.
I can see Maemags as a duo, Russingon as a duo, & even Kano² as a duo, but the 3 of them together? That feels awkward. Unless Finrod is there, he fixes that & definitely vibes with all of them.
Fingon, Aredhel, Celegorm, Curufin, Angrod, & Aegnor as a chaotic hunting squad
They would probably also go on a lot of fun camping trips together.
Again, not really totally non-canon but still adds some friendships who aren’t canonically friends like Fingon + C&C and Aredhel + A&A. Actually to be fair, I’m not sure I can see Fingon + C&C as close, but I think Fingon & Celegorm at least could vibe decently.
Angrod, Aegnor, & Aredhel though? I see them as super close. She’s like a second little sister to them except she’s way more similar in personality to them than their actual little sister. She’d love to join them on their adventures and they’re all close to C&C.
Edhellos & Galadriel. They’re shitting on a certain someone together & using the “s” whenever they get the chance (which is literally every single conversation).
Gil-Galad & Celebrian. Second age Arafinweans. The dynamic is even better if it’s Celebrian & Fin-Galad because Arafinwean girlies 🔛🔝, but if not I still see Gil-Galad as an older sibling figure to her regardless.
Orodreth & Celeborn. Let Celeborn be friends with the one person in Galadriel’s family who is normal. Orodreth & Celeborn are in Valinor having tea and chatting about their precious daughters together because they’re the most wholesome girldads.
Argon & Orodreth purely because they’d be funny together. Argon is too fearless for his own good & Orodreth is the type of person who panics over everything. It’s said in one of the drafts that all the sons of Fingolfin & Finarfin were close so… point for me I guess, but I personally see Orodreth as a generation younger but they’re still close in age.

the stars glimmering coldly - TRSB 2024
Oh my god, I survived my first @tolkienrsb as a fic writer xD. I picked up @elentarial's beautiful collage, to write about the lesser known princesses and princes of the Noldor. It also incorporates a bit of Silmarillion draft from the Lost Road, namely Aegnor and Amrod sailing to Beleriand with the Feanorians. Originally, it was supposed to be a collection of moments centered on these lesser written about characters in Aman and Beleriand. But as a certain disastrous beach-excursion started to overtake my attention, I had to make this a Part 1, so to say. (Tbc eventually) I hope you enjoy reading about how everything went really, really wrong really quickly, now with a pinch of Arafinwëans getting emotionally (and somewhat physically) beaten into a pulp.
Read the fic here
Rating: T Warnings: Graphic Depictions of Violence (about canon-typical severity for a kinslaying) Relationships: general Finwëan family relationships Characters: Fëanorians, Fingolfin, Irimë, (+their host), children of Finarfin minus Finrod, Eldalotë. Olwë, citizens of Alqualondë Word count: 6655

Eldalote, snippet
@finweanladiesweek, for Ladies Who Married In
A snippet on Edhellos or Eldalote after Angrod's death (not, I think, posted publicly before).
In Himring 'verse, she escapes and chooses to become the guardian of Barad Nimras, the watchtower on the coast.
Edhellos stands on the top of the white tower of Barad Nimras, looking out to Sea. It is her task to scan the coast and the horizon northwards in case Morgoth attempts an invasion by that route. They have gradually begun to suspect, during the time since the tower was built, that no attack will come that way, that Ulmo will continue to bar the way over the waves. However, that is no reason for Edhellos to relax her watch. Morgoth has surprised them before—and death and devastation followed. As far as it is in her, he will not be allowed to catch them out again. This is a task she has taken on by choice, pleased to find that she was relieving others from an irksome duty who are more usefully employed elsewhere.
Unlike her husband, lost to her in the destruction of Dorthonion, Edhellos does not have much of an early affinity with the sea. She has no Telerin heritage. Kinder memories of visits to in-laws in Alqualonde are overshadowed by later events: the long, weary, lightless trek along the coast of Araman, the terror and grief of Alqualonde behind, the terror of the Helcaraxe ahead, constantly conscious of the wrath of Uinen on the seaward side, like moisture and salt on her skin. Others might take comfort from the view westward, towards Aman beyond the horizon, but to her it mainly underlines how unreachable the past is.
Looking out, keeping watch—it is these tasks that have become somehow almost reassuring and familiar. Strictly speaking, Nargothrond might, in fact, have been safer but it did not feel so to her—more like the maw of a giant beast whose jaws might one day, unexpectedly, close. Of course, she would never have said so to her brother-in-law Finrod.
She also has some skill in handling the naltalma apparatus that is installed on top of the tower and that can be used to send light signals to Brithombar and Eglarest.

DAY FIVE: Ladies Who Married In From Nerdanel to Eldalótë, the sons and grandsons of Finwë had wives of their own. What did these sisters-in-law have in common? Were Elenwë and Amarië the best of friends or the worst of enemies? What really was going on with Anairë and Eärwen? How did Amarië and Andreth feel, getting so close to the grandsons of Finwë but never quite marrying into the Noldorin royal line? Did Elwing consider herself Finwëan when she married Eärendil, and how did her husband’s family receive her in Valinor? These ladies are as Finwëan as the rest of the family, and this day is for exploring the lives of the mothers and wives who weren’t born into the great extended family of Finwë.
These prompts are optional, and we are open to any content about the Finwëan Ladies whether or not you stick to our suggestions! Please tag your posts with #finweanladiesweek AND @ mention this blog @finweanladiesweek so they can be easily found.  If your submission turns into a long post, please put what you can beneath a “Keep reading” divider. If you are posting your submission to AO3, you can add it to the event collection here.

Smh sent that ask then remembered that Angrod’s wife actually gets a name in canon, oops. So as per my last ask, any thoughts of Eldalótë?
Haha no worries!!
But soo many thoughts. I don't talk about her enough but she's my specialist girl. This is actually my design for her. I still need to finish and post it, not happy with her yet. But here she's wearing a swan feather capelet she got from Angrod :)
Tumblr media
Anyways, Orodreth gets his Stupid from her, even though she won't admit it. She herself is like "Angrod darling our boy is a bit dumb" but still loves the silly boy a lot. She's very fancy & loves to gossip with her noldo ladies about fashion and what some rival vanya lady did that week. I actually headcanon she wanted to go for Finrod but settled with the Second Son and thought he was actually kinda cute. And of course she had some vanya prince picked out for her son. She's the classic opportunist high society lady really haha
I also hc she loves theatre a lot and considers herself a bit of an actress! She loves to perform little plays to her ladies, where she usually plays some sort of damsel in distress type of character and have Angrod save her. (Her friends all adore Angrod because these bitches are obsessed with the vanyar beauty standards)
Angrod obvs adores her and just like with his son can't say no to her in anything. Orodreth is very happy to sit with mama and her friends, and she often has him perched somewhere prettily with his harp, as an essential part of the decoration. As a parent Elda is a little stricter than Angrod (a nonexistent bar to beat tbh)
But yea they are the most family of all time to me. They couldn't get any more children because Angrod only has two hands!!!

Favourite Female Tolkien Character Poll - Round 1, Match 11
Elenwë
The wife of Turgon and mother of Idril; died in the crossing of the Helcaraxë.
Elenwë…perished in the crossing of the Ice; amd Turgon was thereafter unappeasable in his enmity for Fëanor and his sons. He had himself come near to death in the bitter waters when he attempted to save her and his daughter Itaril [Idril], whom the breaking of treacherous ice had cast into the cruel sea. Itaril he saves; but the body of Elenwë was covered in fallen ice.
Írissë [Aredhel] was under the protection of Turukáno [Turgon] who loved her dearly, and of Elenwë his wife.
Eldalótë
The wife of Angrod in the version where he is the father of Orodreth (rather than his brother, as in The Silmarillion). Since a Sindarin translation of her name is given, she likely went with him to Beleriand - making her, I think, the only named wife of a Finwëan who went there and survived the journey.
