No form of love is to be despised
words written by Eleanor Roosevelt ; printed & bound by Peter and Donna Thomas.
To celebrate Iowa City Pride that happened this month, here is another little item featuring violets, and a lovely rainbow roll.
The "rainbow roll" letterpress technique, where the rollers are inked up using more than one color, produces the lovely gradient of pink and purple shown on the text. The text itself is attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt, who was close friends with several lesbian couples during her lifetime and was rumored to be bisexual herself.
"The scroll is wrapped around a capped brass shaft. This scroll unit is slipped inside a hole that was drilled into a small paduk wood block. This block was in turn glued as a textblock into the covers of the book. (The) label which depicts violets and the script initials 'E.R.', as (Eleanor Roosevelt) signed her letters, was printed from a linoleum block carved by Donna." --Catalog

Looking back I see that I was always afraid of something: of the dark, of displeasing people, of failure. Anything I accomplished had to be done across a barrier of fear. https://www.quotenova.net/authors/eleanor-roosevelt/qw5665

ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
1884-1962
FIRST LADY / MARRIED TO FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Eleanor was born into a wealthy family, and was related to President Theodore Roosevelt. Both her parents died before she turned 10 and her brother died when she was nine. In 1902 she moved to New York to prepare for her ‘coming out’ in society. She started dating her cousin, Franklin Roosevelt and they were married in 1905 and had six children. Her children grew up feeling resentful that their mother cared more about strangers than about them.
During World War I in 1917, Eleanor volunteered to treat wounded soldiers. In 1918, she discovered her husband Franklin was having an affair which traumatised her. Eleanor wanted a divorce but Franklin refused because he was worried that it would tarnish his public reputation, he continued to have affairs.
During World War II, she helped gather volunteers and visited troops abroad. In 1921, Franklin was stricken with polio and he was no longer able to stand up. Eleanor increased her activity in her husband’s political career and used this opportunity to bring attention to causes that she cared about.
Franklin became President in 1933 and she became the most politically active First Lady in history. She was involved in many causes including poverty, the rights of women, and child welfare.  In 1939, when the DAR refused to let African-American singer Marian Anderson perform, she resigned her membership and arranged for the concert to go ahead near the Lincoln Memorial. When Alabama officials insisted that seating at their meeting be segregated by race, Eleanor sat in a chair in the middle of the aisle.
Franklin died in 1945, and Eleanor continued her involvement in political causes during Truman’s term as well as President Kennedy.
Eleanor died in 1962, aged 78, from a rare form of tuberculosis and is buried at Hyde Park.
