This made me chuckle in the middle of quite an intense episode. Let it be known that X-Men '97 does humour as well as it does drama.

Just finished Jane Eyre (1973) and I cannot say otherwise than that I absolutely adored it! 2006 must always be my favourite; I first saw it when I was little and it left a lasting impression on me; but this definitely takes second place! I think this adaptation was very successful in compressing some things—as is almost unavoidable—but never giving the feeling like something is truly missing. The compression in the film adaptations always makes it feel like something is lacking, but here I really did feel all the essentials were there. 1983 has as much, if not more, but the acting in this version elevates it beyond that one. Episode four was just constantly spot on, and their chemistry was so, so good. I love them together. The St John section was very, very decent, and I'm so glad we got Jane teasing Rochester at the end! The one thing missing in this adaptation is perhaps a certain moody atmosphere, but it has so much to make up for that and I'll take good acting over good cinematography any day!

I'm sorry it took me so long to answer this ask, but in the interim since I got it: i) an assignment I had for the end of October was moved to last friday and I had to rush it ii) the washer broke down iii) the water purifier broke down iii) the dishwasher broke down. So I have been running after things and being too tired at night to answer asks.

I'm so glad you liked it! It truly is a hidden gem. While I think the St John part is better in 83, this Rochester brings so much more to the rest. I think Michael Jayston commits to the notion that yes, Rochester loves Jane and really truly means to make her happy and is ALSO being very stupid about it and hurting her deeply in the process too. It's very clear (and poignant) in that bit at the wedding where he grabs Jane's hand and holds it over his heart, like he fears something will happen and she will be taken away from him. The very gesture shows both, how much she means to him, but also the fear and guilt that are plaguing him because he knows he's doing something he shouldn't.

I get what you mean about the moody atmosphere. It IS a big deal, but ultimately we have so many adaptations now, that time has made it less of an issue for me. If we only had, say, 73 and 83, I'd be begging for some Gothic atmosphere. As is, having 97, 06 and 11, I'm like "we can have a happy go lucky Jane Eyre. As a treat."

Elizabeth X is a horrific human being

Here is a list of things shes done:

Trapped a star whale that was offering itself..... because shes dense as fuck. Thats the only way she could have not figured out that it was offering itself

Decides that opening up the cranium to expose the brain and then shoot a laser at it for 300 years was a good idea

Creates a dictatorship with her as the "highest authority"

Creates a surveillance state

Creates robots (smilers) that her citizens are afraid of in order to keep them in line

Creates half human half smiler secret police

Holds pretend elections where there is only one correct option and then pretends that its the will of the people to keep the voyage going

Kills all political dissidents, the "protestors"

Kills, and I am quoting directly from the episode, "citizens of limited value" ... which includes children since children cannot be protestors

Sets up a system where SHE does not have to live with the fact that SHE did all this. She literally built into the system the ability to keep her conscience clean while simultaneously being the disgusting dictator in charge of it all.

Masquerades (quite literally, the mask and cloak) as a brave queen investigating her government because they are plotting behind her back and "feeding my citizens" to the beast.

Forced some people to NOT forget what is happening. Like Hawthorn who knows exactly whats going on. They have to live with the guilt while she doesn't.

Lets take this point by point

1 and 2 have no precedent since well no star whales IRL but I can't imagine her being anything but fucking stupid for not figuring it out.

3 The British Royal Family has no genuine power, so either between the 21st century and Elizabeth X they manage to regain power OR Elizabeth X took back power during the horrendous chaos they were trying to escape from. There is no prime minister or parliament or court system. She rules solo. She even says "I rule" and "I am the highest authority"

4 Every part of the ship is being watched, its why the Doctor was seen by Hawthorn doing the water check and why they knew that Amy was doing Bad Things™. Its also why all the adults were ignoring a little girl crying, they know they are being watched. Its got some East Germany Stasi level surveillance vibes.

5 & 6 Secret police are horrific organizations that have committed some of the worst acts in history. Gestapo a vital tool of Hitler or the NKVD responsible for Stalin's Great Purge etc the writers were also probably taking a page out of 1984's thought police & surveillance. Which 1984 itself is based on criticism of Stalinism

7 Every dictatior's favorite public tool! Elections where the outcome is 97+% in the dictator's favor. There should be no fucking elections it's ridiculous. Its not like the citizens even know what they voted for so why pretend to have elections. My only guess is because the beast needs food.

8 ..... bitch really decided "oh, you disagree with the decisions I've made?... well down a tube you go to your death immediately"

9 Say it with me people: E U G E N I C S. That is what that sentence is. As a permanently disabled person living on disability benefits and public insurance, ya know a "burden to society", this single line gave me a sick stomach. What the fuck. How can anyone like this fucked up character???? Remember SHE decided on these rules. SHE MADE THEM. Which also means SHE set the perimeters for "limited value." Limited value includes a child who got bad grades, is punished by the government (not his parents) for bad grades, the punishment is not being able to use the elevator. When he does use the elevator he is killed. So I'm going to go out on a limb and say people who use wheelchairs are definitely just outright killed. Which again remember the Queen decided who counts as limited value. Also if the whale won't eat children, do all the children that are sentenced to death and then work in the dungeon end up getting eaten when they turn 18? How fucking horrific to work in dungeon for years knowing you are literally on death row.

10 & 11 This has got to he THE WORST fucking thing. The character acts so goddamn righteous in her outraged, pissed that her citizens are being hurt, determined to uncover her evil government. When its all her. She gets to be a badass good queen for 10 years, figure out the mystery and how gross she is, erase her memory, and go back to being the badass masquerading righteous queen. She literally made it so she can live with an actual clear conscience. Not knowing any of this is all her fault and being outraged that it all exists. Also the video to herself doesn't mention anything but 1 & 2 by the way. She doesn't tell herself that she created a disgusting surveillance secret police regime run on crushing political dissidents and perpetuating eugenics in the video. She only mentions how bad conditions on Earth were and therefore they were assholes to a star whale, no mention of how shes evil to her own citizens. Hawthorn tells her that all of it is her but SHE doesn't in her own video to herself. She CAN remember, there is no reason she HAS TO forget. Maybe the public does, to live a semi peaceful life not feeling crushing guilt every moment. But the Queen? If anything she has a duty to know. A duty to carry the burden of knowing what she did to the star whale. And a duty to carry the guilt of knowing what she does to her people.

12 She SHOULD feel guilty every moment of every day, since it seems that "forgetting" is how they all manage to live with themselves. So if this whole system is set up to take the burden of guilt away from her citizens then she should be forced to live with it on their behalf but INSTEAD she forces Hawthorn and the secret police to know the truth. If they can know the truth so can she and she just chooses not to.

13 This surveillance police state built on crushing political dissent and rampant eugenics is 300 years old run by a single dictator. 300 years of this dictatorship and Elizabeth X has made herself believe its been only 10 years so that she doesn't have to feel guilty. She consented to having her body clock stopped/slowed by the way, so she knew she'd be a dictator for a very long time.

AND YET we, the audience, are supposed to like her. Shes portrayed as righteous to start—shooting down smilers and chasing after the Doctor to help her figure out her evil government. Then shes horrified at her own deeds with very good acting showing a horrified expression. Then the video we are shown is suppose to make us sympathize with her decision showing that if she abdicated everyone will die so OF COURSE she did all these horrible things. Then after Amy gives the Doctor the mask she says "Her majesty says no more secrets on starship UK" implying that this fucking disgusting dictator should be left in power after the absolute fucking hell and murder she sanctioned for 300 years against her own citizens. And I know we are supposed to like her because her supposed badassness returns in The Pandorica Opens with "This is the royal collection and I'm the bloody queen" while pointing a gun at River.

We are supposed to like a disgusting dictator because.... ??? Guess the idea of the monarchy lasting that long was supposed to be cool or whatever.

Elizabeth X is a disgusting oppressive eugenicist dictator

that should have been thrown off the ship. Or fed to the beast. Whichever the people she wronged choose.

Also how is the beast fed now? If no more secrets then no more elections, no more forget buttons, and thus no more protestors. But "citizens of limited value" (again I cannot believe that is an actual fucking quote) still exist. Do they become the sole diet? Do they figure out what star whales naturally eat?

okay so on one level i can appreciate that Casualty has Paula's baby taken in the same episode that Robyn finds out she's pregnant, especially with that moment on the two benches, with Dylan representing Paula's desire to keep her child, and Robyn so obviously not wanting to be pregnant...

but god, just once i'd like to see a character get pregnant, decide to abort, and be done with it. not every pregnancy on tv needs to be a drawn-out drama where the only inevitable option is keeping it!

My #1 post of 2022

so my family’s got the funeral on (they’re not royalists), and while i’m not watching the ceremony, i did catch bits of the procession to the abbey. and i just...

look. i knew it was gonna be ridiculous. but i didn’t expect it to feel unsettling on two different fronts.

first there’s the obscene wealth and pageantry of the crown. ordinary people had their funerals cancelled today, out of ~respect~, and all i can think about is how much time and money those people had to pay in the middle of a cost of living crisis, that will now have to be done again because of rescheduling. there are people who might not be able to attend those rescheduled funerals because they could only get time off work/school for the original date. all of these ordinary people having to make time for logistics in the midst of their grieving. meanwhile, one family gets to take precedence over everyone else, on an unimaginable scale.

it’s insane to me how many people there were for the queen’s procession. not people attending the funeral, just people following the coffin to the doors. and all of these servicemen looking like robots, everything in perfect sync, from their steps to the goddamn removal of their hats.

but then there’s also the frequent close-up shots of the coffin. and it’s like. don’t get me wrong. i have no sympathy for the woman who was an active participant in the colonialist horrors that this country inflicted on the rest of the world.

but there’s something deeply grotesque to me about her funeral being a televised spectacle. especially with how many close-ups there are of the crown on top of the coffin. really hammers home, quite unintentionally, how utterly unnatural it is to elevate one family over everyone else. millions of people stamped down, and the people at the top are reduced to symbolic objects. whichever way you look at it, humanity loses.

My Thoughts on X-Men 97 Episode 7 Bright Eyes

Another awesome episode, it was very heavy too. Again it has brilliant dialogue and animation. love the affects of wet hair in the rain.

Spoilers, also thought be best to put a trigger warning for grief, attempted suicide ect.

Damn! I didn't expect the episode to start with Gambit's funeral, I was not prepared for that.

I see Gambit's ex wife and his brother are there. Who's the black and white haired lady.

Nightcrawler is doing the funeral, the eulogy was beautiful.

Rogue is not at the funeral, she's gone Rogue

Oh damn! Rogue certainly trashes that secret base.

Oh cool it's Ross but not totally surprised as another Marvel character appears later.

President Kelly makes an appearance and he's being voiced by Morph's old voice actor from the original series.

I love how Cyclops has his visor round the back of his neck like headphones.

Hmm interesting, Jean has her hair down.

Nice to Amelia again.

I already knew that Captain America appears, I hope other Marvel characters appear.

Rogue confronts him, who is also looking for Gyrich. I just love that he's letting Rogue hold his shield.

OZT - Operation Zero Tolerance, I know that story.

Rogue throwing his shield was hilarious.

Hmm, are we getting a bit of Dark Beast.

Rogue found Gyrich in Mexico, she tries to absorb his memories but we only see a glimpse of Nimrod.

Cyclops and Jean find Emma Frost alive, she survived when her secondary mutation activated her diamond form.

Scott thought Madelyn might have survived but he teared up, pretty sweet of Jean consoling him then.

Roberto tells his Mum that he's a mutant but she already knew and is fine about it but wants to keep it private because money is more important.

Nightcrawler consoling Rogue was so sweet, I love that he called her his sister. Rogue wailing was so heart-breaking and I ended up in tears too.

Yikes!!!! there is actually an on screen murder happening. Bastion kills Gyrich by suffocating him.

Lol at everyone crammed in that elevator and Morph drinking that diet drink.

Oh damn!! Trask wants to end his own life.

Rogue 'killing' him was shocking, she didn't want him to end his own life because she wanted to kill him herself.

Turns out Trask isn't dead, he turned into a prime Sentinel and took out Rogue. Hope she's ok, Nightcrawler saves her and we don't see them again

Love the team up moment between Jean and Cyclops. Jean throwing that building into the sea was awesome.

Scott finds out Cable is Nathan, love the tension there.

So Sinister is working for Bastion. Does that happen in the comics I can't remember.

They find out Xavier is alive. due to getting hold of some Shi'ar technology and Lilandra is announcing her wedding engagement to Charles. So it does look like episode 6 and 7 are happening at the same time, that's probably why Storm wasn't at the funeral.

What is this song The Purple People Eater, I've never even heard it before.

Magneto is alive!!!!!! I did have a feeling he was but he is now captured by Bastion but how did he survive.

Bastion is very creepy, scary villain. That shaving scene was weird. What's he planning to do with Magneto? brainwash him, use him as a scapegoat, what? I'm so confused.

Again great episode can't wait for next weeks episode but i'm very nervous especially its the start of the 3 part final.

Great Star Trek Rewatch - Enterprise S2

Enterprise Season 2 is up next in my Great Star Trek Rewatch. As in Season 1, mini-reviews will document my progress.

Shockwave, Part 2: Most Star Trek cliffhangers have weak resolutions, but I think Shockwave is better than most. It’s a little gross to have Hoshi lose her shirt in front of Reed. The floating head gag is pretty great. And it’s fun to see the crew take their ship back. 8/10

Carbon Creek: One of ENT’s finest entries. No critiques here, just a perfect hour of Star Trek. 10/10

Minefield: Romulans! Mines! Body horror! The visuals still hold up after 17 years. Not showing the Romulans’ faces elevates the tension. 8/10

Dead Stop: If it seems too good to be true, it usually is. Luckily our heroes cotton to the sinister repair station’s motives quickly. The ending is appropriately eerie; I’d love to see DSC or PIC reference the station. 7/10

A Night in Sickbay: Season 2’s first dud. I love dogs but Archer’s obsession is almost out of character for him. I also don’t buy Phlox’s ignorance of human-pet bonds, since he claims to have learned a lot about humans. 2/10

Marauders: ENT’s heroes do The Magnificent Seven by way of The Road Warrior. Action-y but not necessarily memorable. 6/10

The Seventh: A spy mission! Involving T’Pol’s past! Guest starring Bruce Davison! Should be awesome and memorable, right? Unfortunately, no, it’s the opposite. There’s a reason it’s 87 out of 97 at TrekRanks. 5/10

The Communicator: Another pre-Prime Directive episode done blandly. It’s hard to put a new spin on a sublime TOS episode like “A Piece of the Action.” Trip’s cloaked hand gag is great. 5/10

Singularity: What starts off as light and farcical becomes sinister. Not particularly memorable except for “Reed Alert,” and “CARROTS!” 5/10

Vanishing Point: Hoshi has a bad transporter experience. Shades of “Realm of Fear,” but that episode was more entertaining. Strong concept, middling effort in execution. 4/10

Precious Cargo: A glorified sex slave was icky in 1991, and the same role (the same alien race too) in 2002 is twice as icky. This attempt at The African Queen/Temple of Doom homage is just a misfire on all cylinders. Trip and Kaitaama have zero chemistry. 0/10

The Catwalk: The neutronic wave front was a clever concept from VOY, and it was fun to see it again in ENT. Instead of Irish villages, we have militaristic aliens trying to steal the NX-01. A decent effort. 6/10

Dawn: I liked this one better when it was a TNG episode called “The Enemy.” 2/10

Stigma: An AIDS parable that is still relevant, unfortunately. The fact that T’Pol suffered consequences from Tolaris’s assault while he got off scot-free still stings, but it shines a light on the bigotry still facing LGBTQ+ people today. 7/10

Cease Fire: While I enjoy episodes featuring the Vulcan-Andorian conflict, especially those involving Shran, I don’t get much out of this one. Suzie Plakson as Shran’s lieutenant is pitch-perfect casting. The plot line moves forward but otherwise it’s a dull outing. 6/10

Future Tense: An intergalactic, inter temporal mystery! Plus, Tholians, Suliban, and Daniels' temporal database. And the mysterious timeship is…smaller on the outside ;) 7/10

Canamar: You've seen one prison break episode, you've seen them all. I kept waiting for Zoumas to be revealed as some master criminal, but it never came. Kuroda was well acted, but it's just another forgettable prison break episode. 5/10

The Crossing: Possession by non-corporeal beings has been done many, many times by Star Trek, but this episode belongs near the bottom of the list. No randy candle ghosts = no redeeming qualities. 5/10

Judgment: Klingon judicial intrigue a la The Undiscovered Country, with a side of "Rules of Engagement." Kolos is a great character. Not much happens though; Archer and Kolos are on Rura Penthe for all of five minutes before an off-screen rescue. Glad to see Hertzler again. 7/10

Horizon: Finally, a Mayweather episode! Finally, more boomer action! Why so dull? It's not Mayweather's fault. It's just a paint-by-numbers family drama. Not bad, not great, just cromulent. 6/10

The Breach: A twist on "Jetrel" where Phlox is Jetrel and the guest star is Neelix. Unfortunately, it hits all the same notes as the superior VOY episode. The B-plot of Denobulan scientists is also a letdown. 4/10

Cogenitor: A gut-wrenching ending elevates a worthy reinterpretation of "The Outcast." Archer and Trip's final scene in the ready room is a masterclass in directing, acting, and editing. 10/10

Regeneration: It tries too hard to keep our heroes from identifying the Borg, but damn if it isn't entertaining. The opening scenes give the Borg the creepiness factor they've been lacking since First Contact, and the effects are top-notch. Just a rip-roaring ride. 8/10

First Flight: Top-notch guest casting, powerful back story for Archer and Tucker, and a thrilling conclusion. Here's to you, A.G. 8/10

Bounty: Ugh. This episode. Ugh. Archer's scenes with Skalaar are fine. T'Pol's decon scene with Phlox, and her early-onset pon farr, is just an excuse to get Jolene Blalock into her skivvies and drags the score way down. 3/10

The Expanse: This episode floors it from the jump and doesn't let up until the NX-01 clears the thermobaric clouds. This is one of my all-time favorite season finales, and my favorite episode from Season 2. 10/10

And with that, Season 2 of ENT comes to an end in my Great Star Trek Rewatch. Final score: 5.92/10. Highest score(s): "Carbon Creek," "Cogenitor," "The Expanse." Lowest score(s): “Precious Cargo"

here’s a fun fact I learned from a deep wikipedia dive - the girls in the elevator in that scene with katya are procacci’s twin nieces

however, when i realized that my friend’s dad who’s been in the vfx industry for ages (he worked on stargate, it’s very cool, just a random guy i went to college with) worked on it, i asked the friend if there was anything else that i should know.

my friend’s dad emailed me to tell me the craziest thing - in some versions of the film, matteo jwjh 0715 is actually rotoscoped into the final scene as the thing katya seems afraid of! but scorsese thought it was better if she was acting on pure cold blooded calculation so he removed it from the version that’s most easily accessible today.
