MAG 185 Relisten

Activity on my first listen: cutting the jasmine in my garden.

"So when she turned and saw them standing there, so official in their vests and helmets, what else was she to think? Ah, thank goodness, it flitted through her mind as Tina felt herself relax, whatever it is, someone is taking care of it. Because that’s what they were for, to take care of these problems, to shuffle people away for their own protection, and keep the world working as it should be." There is an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, when Will and Carlton drive the car of a friend of the Banks' family somewhere to meet up, and being two black young men in a nice car, they of course get pulled over. Will already knows what this means, but Carlton (while being black has still lived a rather privileged life because of his dad's wealth, private school, country club, a butler etc.) was super oblivious about the officer's suspicions and intentions. I always have to think of this episode when I think about MAG 185.

"This did not happen to people like her." I mean, I do think MAG 185 isn't about the typical racial profiling per se, more about it happening to people who think of themselves to be so privileged and safe from police brutality, that they never would have guessed it could also happen to them?

"It had all been there, all of it. Her life, her loves, her choices, her mistakes. No details spared, no nasty inference ignored." That's one of the domains, that can't be sorted that easily. This is clearly Eye, and even before Tina was arrested she felt like being watched. Then the identical looking police men who arrested her sound like the Stranger. That thing with the world just carrying on without her and even if there are people noticing, they antagonize her like the girl hurling a stone at her and the father quickly shooing her away in terror could be Lonely?

"'None of these things are illegal,' she had said." And Spiral?

Hmm, I mean yeah, that statement had rather few fantastical things happening which makes it seem more realistic and not like a supernatural, impossible twisting of reality.

MARTIN: "No it’s just… Is that how these creatures see us now? As one of them?" JON: [Amused] "I forgot that’s a new experience for you." MARTIN: "Excuse me?" JON: "You have to remember I’ve had this for years. Right from the start, it’s always been ‘Archivist’ this and ‘Archivist’ that. All these weird, awful creatures assuming I’m ‘in’ on all the secrets. Even when they were trying to kill me, they treated me like I was a… a peer." Hm yeah, we know it because we're seen primarily Jon's story, but there are big chunks of information missing for Martin (especially S3 and 4). Even though he was there when he was been addressed as "Archivist" for the first time. Or for the first two times? Elias singing "dear Archivist" at Jon's birthday, and then when Prentiss texted him (lol, that sounds funny...)

JON: "Not all of them. And now? Sure the power’s shifted, it’s all politeness and respect, but it still feels just like more of the same. I guess I just stopped caring at some point. Besides they are technically right, I am one of them. To a degree." Yeah, in the beginning they were like "Ohhhh, did I hurt the poor young Archivist? What'cha gonna do? You're gonna cry? Gonna run to Elias?". Then after the coma it's suddenly "What are you doing... Stop it!" and now they're full on Schrödinger's douchbag with "Pls don't kill me, I didn't mean it! It was just a joke!"

MARTIN: "It’s not the same. I’m still just your ‘plus one’." JON: [Amusedly] "Don’t put yourself down. It’s not your fault you’re a bit overshadowed. I am such a very big deal after all." MARTIN: "Oh, very big arse, more like it." Lol

JON: "Either way, even if I wasn’t here, I don’t think you’d be in any danger. Not anymore. I wasn’t sure when we first started out, I hadn’t properly, er… looked into it, as it were. But now I’m certain." Still, I think Jon actually did mean the "I won't let it [harm you]" in MAG 161. He would have fought tooth and nail if he had to in order to protect Martin.

MARTIN: "I’m one of them." JON: "One of… us." MARTIN: "That’s not as comforting as you think it is." JON: "Doesn’t mean it’s not true though." Still a bit in denial^^

MARTIN: "Even though I didn’t ask for it? Did nothing to deserve it?" JON: "‘Deserve’. Huh. Now there’s a word that always causes trouble." MARTIN: "Don’t be patronising." JON: "I just mean that nobody here deserves the position they’ve found themselves in, not really. I suppose a few may have asked for it, sought it out even, but far more didn’t. They just made the wrong choices for the right reasons. Or even the right choices. But ones that still led them here in the end." NOT REALLY! Also, yes, more philosophizing about morals, I love that shit!

INSPECTOR: "Argh! Look, you can’t know if they’re all guilty, alright? It’s just about evidence…" Right, so if that one's here in this domain, then was Tina in the statement really that innocent? "None of these things are illegal" can mean a lot of things.

INSPECTOR: "Hey, fuck you, you scrawny little tit! What the hell do you know?" Luckily, there are a lot of awful people out there who, sooner or later, will show their true face in public (And then this becomes a whole new problem when the majority of society can’t understand why that was wrong...). Also, we got a bit of physical description of Jon there! I never really gave anything to Nikola's "little Archivist" in MAG 97, I thought she meant it in a belittling way. But Jon get's called "little" again, so I guess there's something to it xD Also, we knew he's not the fittest since he gets tired from carrying a metal pipe around, but another confirmation here, boy's scrawny!

MARTIN: "No, you were right to. That’s… that’s a lot of power to have to deal with. Lot of responsibility." JON: "Yes, thank you, Uncle Ben." MARTIN: [Chuckle] "Pop culture? Really?" JON: "I’m allowed to know what Spiderman is." Even if Jon embodies this old fashioned dark academia look, I don't think that's him at all and people just misjudge him. He's been a bookworm in his childhood after all!

MARTIN: "Not helping people is still a decision, isn’t it?" JON: "Well, you saw Jordan, I’m not sure ‘helping’ is –" MARTIN: "I know, I know, not the right word. Ignoring them then." JON: "Yes. It’s a choice I’ve been making a lot recently." MARTIN: "I guess we should get used to it. Knowing that all these awful things are happening for our benefit." JON: "Maybe it’s better if it never gets comfortable." MARTIN: "Maybe." Huh, that's a thought you can convert to rl. The luxury we live in first world countries is sustained at poorer country's cost. And it's so hard to fight this, to try and get resources, which were traded fairly or get them locally. And if you can find something like that, then you need to be able to afford it because these things are of course a lot more expensive than the exploited thing.

Heh, how that familiar Lonely squealing already starts and Martin immediately noticing^^

That is a really cool cliffhanger. Not only teasing Martin's domain, but Martin and Jon being separated in a Lonely domain, again!

Elias watches the whole ordeal from the doorway as you wrestle with your two year old to get off her fathers suitcase he has packed for his roadie.

She looks over at Elias “Daddy!”

“Astrid I’ve got to go to work baby”

She pouts “but I miss you” he wants to cry at the crack in her voice but instead picks her up and hugs her “I know Älskling”

Elias feels guilty and he buys her stuff on his trips all the time. She has a million New York themed stuffed animals and one too many Carlton the bears to count.

MAG 92 - baking apple pie

HOLD ON! Is that operator and Chief Inspector Hannah "Laura Popham/Jane Prentiss/Rosie Zampano" Brankin and the officer on the phone Alexander J"ared Hopworth/Martin Blackwood" Newall??? The operator sounds fairly clearly and the officer just sounds like Alex disguising his voice to sound deeper (or it's just edited like with Jared). Not so sure about the Chief Inspector. It lists both of them as additional voices, so it's possible?

"My dear Jonah" - ¬‿¬

"I know that what is done by those I cannot see might be felt here" - clever, using a place of Beholding to uncover those turned invisible by the fog. So… Did Barnabas know what the Institute was? What Jonah could do?

ELIAS "No, it was because he was curious. Because he had to know, to watch and see it all. That’s what this place is, John, never forget it. You may believe yourself to have friends, to have confidantes, but in the end, all they are is something for you to watch, to know, and ultimately to discard. This, at least, Gertrude understood." - Jon did better! Jon tried to help and save every single one of them! And in the end, exactly this was his doom to become the Archive. Gertrude did let all her assistants die, let others do the dirty and deadly work, which prevented her to get marked be all the fears.

MARTIN "Uh, sorry to interrupt, er, J-Jon’s here!" - Awww, he sounds so happy about this!

ELIAS "Goodness, Jon. Whatever happened to your hand? And your neck?" - Letting us know that the blunt knife did actually do some damage. Also Elias sounds so bored here. I mean, of course he Knew what happened, but usually he puts in a bit more effort to sound surprised or concerned.

JON [Chuckles] "I’ve had a hell of a week." - Yeah you did. On this day Jon got marked by the Vast and the Hunt. And just 4 days ago he got marked by the Desolation. (It is a Friday btw. and he met Jude on Monday.)

DAISY "Before I strangle the grinning bastard." - Letting us know, that Elias finds this whole situation amusing…

Oh yes, the static's pretty loud when Jon consciously compels someone.

Even though Elias sounds amused about the feeling of the compulsion, he also sounds like it takes a bit of effort to resist it.

ELIAS "There’s so much of this place, of ourselves, twisted by forces far beyond us. I just wanted you to know –" - Okay, was he about to talk about the Web? Since he wanted the others to know that he was not controlled and acted of his own free will. And conveniently in this moment Martin retrieved the others and interrupts him! Another Web!Martin moment!

BASIRA "Ah… Oh, god! And you killed him? You sure we shouldn’t be giving him a medal?" - Lol. Nobody liked Leitner xD At least his reputation.

God, the others finding out what really happened to Sasha… Martin and Tim I mean, I guess Jon already told Melanie.

ELIAS "Precisely. It finally tried to kill John. Then Leitner killed it. Then I killed Leitner." - THIS is a huge clue that Elias can't see what happens inside the tunnels! He couldn't see what actually happened to the Not!Them and he also couldn't hear Leitner (because of his A Disapprearance tho) when he told Jon that he entombed it.

Ben makes such a good villain! That chuckle when he phone rings!

ELIAS "No, there are plenty of other rabid dogs out there, mad with the hunt." - Smirke'ian name of the Hunt first time drop!

Martin doubting the police would do something like this reminds me of that The Fresh Prince of Bel Air's episode where Carlton thinks the police was only "doing their job" when they stopped him and Will and threw them in jail. That naiveté of disbelief that people wouldn't take advantage of their power.

ELIAS "Basira is now tied to the Institute. All of you are. Like fingers on a hand. And I am the beating heart of it. Should I, or the Institute, be destroyed, you will all, unfortunately, follow suit." - When I was first listening to this I stormed out of the kitchen to the group of friends staying at our place (because we would go on vacation together the next day) and babbled something incoherent to them about OMG THEY CAN'T LEAVE OR THEY'LL ALL DIE!!!

ELIAS "To offer some congratulations. You’re doing a lot better than I expected." JON "Feels like all I’ve managed to do is… not die." ELIAS "And believe me, that is a remarkably rare skill." - It's kind of true. All Elias needed was for Jon not to die. Yet.

ELIAS "The easily-digestible sort that wipe away any doubt and fear, and neatly organise your new world into happy little" - DOORBELLS!

ELIAS "These are things you must discover on your own." - This and with his explanation of Leitner "Telling Jon too much too soon!!!" I thought was a bad excuse. Turns out later, it was and it was intended! It was just an excuse to get Jon marked. Something I first considered lazy writing suddenly turned into brilliant writing!

ELIAS "Precisely. It is your job to chronicle these things, to experience them, whether first-hand or through the eyes of others" - Jon theater-kid explanation.

JON "I never chose this." ELIAS "You never wanted this, no. But I’m afraid you absolutely did choose it. In a hundred ways, at a hundred thresholds, you pressed on. You sought knowledge relentlessly, and you always chose to see. Our world is made of choices, John, and very rarely do we truly know what any of them mean, but we make them nonetheless." - Elias kinda gaslighting Jon here? How can it be choice if we don't know, what it means. When we don't even know there was a choice. That's kind of a philosophical question here that everyone can see differently… Also door motif!

ELIAS "I could. But I believe that if I did so, you would fail. The Stranger is antithetical to us. We thrive on ceaseless watching, on knowing too much. What we face is the hidden, the uncanny, and the unknown. If you are to stop them, you need to get better at seeing." - Ok that one actually does make sense. But I believe that in this instance Elias was also genuine and not making excuses to get Jon marked. Not directly at least. He needs him to survive death.

The explanation of the Unknowing, what it is and does was also pretty mind-blowing for me the first time listening.

Jon lingering to ask if he's still human is so sad…

Even though Elias does sound like an absolute villain, grooming Jon into horrible things, I was still not entirely convinced Elias is the super bad when I was first listening. He does want to stop the Unknowing after all.

Elias' ambiguous villainy and obvious asshole-ness was performed so well in this episode

The Carlton siblings

It's time to meet my Lackadaisy Ocs, the Carlton siblings!

But first, a little history about these four..

The Carlton family is a family of rum runners and brewers. Supplying speakeasies with not only imported alcohol but home brewed alcohol as well (though it cost more). The business began with Robert Carlton, who sold home brewed alcohol on the side to provide for his family. Word quickly spread of this home brewer, and soon, the Carlton brewery business began.

As time went on, Robert gained a crew of rum runners to deliver and smuggle alcohol to the many speakeasies who sought business with him. It wasn't long before his children, three sons and a daughter, joined the family business.

But alas, this type of business is never without its dangers. For this small family of brewers and rumrunners caught the attention of a dangerous gang, with a boss who had a bone to pick with Robert.

This led to an incident that resulted in the tragic death of his wife, Rosemarie, and near death of his youngest son. After this, many of Robert's crew left, and Robert sought to protect what remained of his family. Which led him to make a partnership with St Louis' most prominent bootleg operation at the time, Lackadaisy.

The partnership was successful for both Lackadaisy and the Carltons. Both provide one another with the things needed. The Carltons had the alcohol and Lackadaisy had the muscle and funds.

But in 1926, when news of Atlas's death got out, the Carlton family soon found themselves on a sinking ship as Lackadaisy slowly fell apart.

Three months later, Robert Carlton was found dead by his children. The cause of death was unclear. Though his children believed that he suffered a heart attack in the middle of the night.

His eldest son, Elias Carlton, took over the family business. Breaking ties with the now diminished Lackadaisy and partnering up with Marigold.

....now with that out of the way, let's meet the siblings!

Elias Carlton

Born: July 28, 1899

Age: 28

Elias Carlton was the firstborn son of a loving household that expected much of him. He worked hard to help out his family and was close with his younger brother, Connor. At the age of 14, Elias was encouraged by his grandfather to pursue music since he possessed great talent at the piano, but his dreams were soon quashed by the loss of his grandfather. Despite this, he continued to encourage his younger sister, Lucille, to pursue her musical ambitions.

When Prohibition came around, Elias and Connor began to engage in dangerous and illegal activity as their father began a home brewery business. Elias took on the responsibility of preparing Lucille and Anthony for these jobs, teaching them how to handle a gun and defend themselves if they were unarmed. Despite the danger of these jobs and the trauma they sometimes caused, Elias never doubted his place in the family business. He was in a loving relationship, discussing his future role in the family business, and he felt like everything was on track.

However, a seemingly simple task changed everything for Elias. As he had a date with his girlfriend, Sarah, he asked his younger brother, Anthony, to take his place helping their mother with a pickup from a shady supplier.

Elias was coming home from his date, Sarah in tow, ready to share the news of what he had asked Sarah. However, upon returning home, he noticed a commotion. The devastating news of his mother's death and Anthony's injuries, along with the revelation that Anthony was now mute because of the trauma, left Elias racked with guilt. The guilt only grew as he learned that he could have prevented all of this from happening if he hadn't asked Anthony to take his place that day.

Elias Carlton took the loss of his mother and brother's trauma to heart. In an attempt to deal with the guilt and grief he felt, he buried himself in his work. He became a reclusive and distant individual, pushing away those he cared about. His relationship with his brother, Connor, and his ex-girlfriend, Sarah, suffered as a result.

When their father passed away, Elias took over as the head of the family business. Many believed he made these decisions for his own benefit, but in reality, he was making these tough choices for his siblings.

He wanted to atone for his mistake of asking his brother to take his place on that fateful day. He hoped that by ensuring his siblings' financial security and protection, he could make it up to them. Even if it meant taking on clients or suppliers he didn't trust or like. Even if it meant his siblings would end up hating him. As long as he protected them and provided for them, that was good enough for him.

Connor Carlton

Born: September 15, 1900

Age: 26

Connor Carlton was the second eldest in the Carlton family, being born a year after Elias. The two were close, though they often bickered about minor matters. While Elias was encouraged to pursue a life outside of the simple countryside, Connor felt at ease in the quiet surroundings of their home and would often assist his mother around the farm.

Connor was a responsible young man, protecting and looking after his younger siblings, Anthony and Lucille. At the age of 19, Prohibition began, and Connor's father started the home brewery business. He did his part to help out until a hijacking went wrong, and Connor was struck by a bullet and left behind at the Carlton home. While he recovered, he began to take an interest in the brewery process and eventually became a brewer himself, working alongside one of his uncles who had joined the family business. Connor was also put in charge of finding ingredients, suppliers, and clients, which often meant traveling to the city, though he much preferred the solitude of the countryside.

After the incident, Connor and Elias's once-close bond had been affected, with Connor lashing out and blaming his brother for the loss of their mother.

Although Connor eventually apologized, having regretted what he had said after seeing how much Elias was suffering from the guilt, the bond between the two was never the same. Connor then started to consider leaving the family business behind, hoping his siblings would also agree on finding a peaceful life. However, it was too late to turn back, as by then, Anthony had already spilled blood on his hands. Though Connor resented his father for leading him and his siblings down the path of crime, he felt obligated to stay with his family and uphold the family business.

Connor still lives in the countryside with his siblings, working in the family business into the late hours of the night without complaint.

Despite it all, Connor still hopes to find a way out, to have a more peaceful life. Yet, he knows leaving will be difficult after all the crimes he and his family have committed. It won't be easy to revert to a normal way of living after everything they've done.

For now, Connor focuses his efforts on running the family business, providing for his siblings, and keeping a close watch over them, hoping to prevent any more trouble from falling into their paths once more.

Lucille Carlton

Born: October 6, 1904

Age: 22

Lucille Carlton is the third child of the Carlton family, but being the only daughter in a family of mostly boys meant she didn't quite fit the norm of the day. Still, her family gave her all the same love and attention they gave her brothers. Lucile was a spirited and energetic child, though as she grew older, her energetic nature waned as she took on a more calm and mature demeanor.

At the age of twelve, Lucille noticed how she was treated differently, seen as weak and defenseless, and this annoyed her to extent. The only people who understood and saw her true nature was her three brothers.

When Prohibition came around at the age of fifteen, Lucille wanted to help out and prove herself, but her father wanted her to work alongside her mother. After some persistence from Lucille, she was allowed to work alongside her brothers, whose jobs included hijacking shipments. Despite the danger, Lucille learned how to defend herself and handle a weapon with the help of Elias. She helped with many jobs, though things went wrong frequently and eventually led up to 'the incident'.

After the tragic loss, Lucille realized just how dangerous hijacking and other illegal jobs could be. By that point, however, it was too late to turn back from going down that path. It was also at this time that Lucille became engaged to Philip, but things took a turn for the worse as his true nature was possessive and controlling. In some cases, violent. Though her brothers urged her to break off the engagement, Lucille stayed with Philip, wanting to please his family and not wanting to let anyone down.

The day of their wedding, Lucille finally decided she could not bring herself to do it. She snuck out of the church, and her brothers waited for her outside in the car. They whisked her away, knowing they had to protect her from the inevitable fallout when her absence was discovered. She finally decided she could no longer stay with Philip after realizing the situation was irredeemable.

However, this would lead to her brothers becoming protective of Lucille. As the three felt guilt for practically allowing Lucille to go through what she did with Philip. They didn't want to risk her ending up in such a situation again.

Her brothers were doing what they thought best for her to spare her from another potential disaster with a man, but in the process, they unintentionally prevented Lucille from making new connections. As Lucille settled into her role as a singer at the Maribel hotel, word began to spread about her brothers' aggressive behavior. Guests became fearful of approaching Lucille as they feared running afoul of the brothers. This made her feel isolated, as while men admired her from afar, she became the subject of ridicule and spite by women who envied her and resented how the men admired the girl they couldn't have. This started to affect her self-esteem and self-worth, and she began to feel invisible and alone.

Yet, despite her brothers' extreme behavior, she still loves them and appreciates them for always having her back. However, she also grows tired of feeling like the odd person out and wishes her brothers would just let her be. Still, she never voices these feelings because she is always thankful and understands why they act this way, even if she wishes they wouldn't.

Anthony Carlton

Born: November 17, 1905

Age: 21

Anthony Carlton is the youngest of the Carlton siblings, born only a year after Lucille. The two shared a close bond, practically inseparable as children.

Anthony was talkative and filled with life as a child, and was very close with his mother, despite occasionally being teased by his older brothers for it. Despite the teasing, Anthony could always rely on his brothers and sister to have his back whenever it came to bullying from neighborhood kids.

When Prohibition began, Anthony was only fourteen. Despite his worries, he accompanied his siblings on hijacks. As time went on, he eventually became an effective triggerman for the family business. He developed a reputation as a bootlegger, making him a valuable asset to his family, and eventually gaining the attention of rival gangs.

One day, Anthony was asked by Elias to take his place on a job so that he could go on a date with his girlfriend. And Anthony agreed. I mean, what harm could it do?

Ultimately, this decision turned out to be a deadly mistake, as rivals aimed to kill Anthony and killed his mother in the process.

The tragic incident that brought grief to the Carlton siblings.

Despite his wounds, Anthony managed to survive. However, the trauma from seeing his mother killed right before Anthony's eyes caused him to go mute, a stark change from the talkative, upbeat person he was before.

His siblings felt deep guilt and grief over the incident, having noticed the drastic change. Anthony distanced himself from people for a while, though his bond with Lucille stayed relatively unchanged. While Anthony no longer speaks, it seems like his connection to Lucille remained mostly intact. Lucille is able to understand his thoughts and emotions through physical cues and mannerisms and remains closest to him among the other Carlton siblings, with his relationship with Elias seemingly strained. Despite all this, Anthony persists with his duties to his family.

When the Carltons began doing business with Marigold, Anthony was sent to work alongside Mordecai Heller and the Savoy siblings. Due to the fact that Anthony still lives in the countryside with Connor and Lucille, he is only sent on hijacks and hits whenever he is in town visiting Elias alongside his siblings.

During that time, Anthony has seemingly caught the attention of the Savoys, specifically Nicodeme Savoy. It is currently unclear what their intentions are.

Prince Albert Sheds New Light on When His Parents Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier First Met

The royal couple succeeded in keeping their developing romance secret until Prince Rainier sailed for America, proposing seven months after their first meeting

Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco's royal marriage continues to fascinate. The modern fairy tale involving a prince and a Hollywood actress remains a love story for the ages. Now, 67 years after the couple's first meeting, their son Prince Albert is shedding new light on their storied encounter.

Kelly and Rainier's meeting was orchestrated in part by Gone with the Wind actress Olivia de Havilland. Recalling her role in the pairing, the Oscar winner, who died in 2020 at the age of 104, told PEOPLE in 2017: "I'm tempted to think it was destiny." 

On May 4, 1955, de Havilland and her husband, Paris-Match editor Pierre Galante, were traveling by train to Cannes. When Galante learned that Kelly was a fellow passenger, he was "struck" by the idea that the actress should meet Prince Rainier, de Havilland recalled.

When the train arrived in Cannes, de Havilland ran to catch Kelly to suggest the meeting.

"Grace struck me on the first encounter as a rather reserved, self-possessed, well brought up young woman," de Havilland said, recalling their fateful exchange which occurred "on the small platform between the dining car and the next carriage when I overtook her to ask if she would agree to a meeting with Prince Rainier."

"She immediately agreed, but made the highly professional proviso that such a meeting must first be approved of by the studio sponsoring her visit to Cannes: MGM."

With Kelly's "immediate agreement" secured, Galante set to work. He telephoned Kelly to announce Rainier had invited her to his palace at 4 p.m., the following afternoon. Explaining her required presence at a Cannes cocktail for her film at 5:30, she declined. Later, when Galante called back saying Rainier had consented to move their meeting up to 3, Grace relented.

The morning of the pair's meeting started badly — and got progressively worse.

Waking late, Kelly washed her hair before discovering a labor strike had cut off all the festival city's electricity. No hairdryer, makeup lights or iron. With two cars waiting downstairs outside The Carlton hotel, Kelly pulled her hair back, arranged it with flowers, put on her one unwrinkled outfit (a thick silk taffeta "Easy To Sew" floral model she'd worn a year earlier for McCall's Patterns) and of course, finding the elevators without power, rushed down several flights of stairs, to meet Galante and a carload of photographers.

A fender-bender with photographers in a following car delayed them and when they eventually arrived at the Palace, Rainier wasn't there. 

According to Prince Albert, Rainier's aide-de-camp welcomed Kelly, but for 55 minutes, it was the palace's maitre d'hote Michel Demaurizi who "heroically" kept Grace occupied. 

As Albert recently recounted to Paris-Match, Demaurizi walked her through the rooms of the palace's grand apartments, where he "shared his fascination for Napoleon, lingering in front of Empire-period masterpieces" collected by Rainier's grandfather Prince Louis II.

The clock was ticking and Kelly was due back for a reception in her honor at Cannes. "It was nearly 4 p.m. when my father finally appeared in the royal antechamber. A few shots were made. The famous handshake photograph, posed," Albert said.

When Rainier invited Kelly to see his 225-room palace, she replied she'd already had the full tour. "As the whole visit was already done, there was nothing left for the prince to show — except the gardens," Albert added.

The couple walked ahead, speaking privately, outside the earshot of photographers and journalists, as they toured the gardens and Rainier's private zoo. "The atmosphere changed," Prince Albert said. "The couple relaxed."

The royal's menagerie housed a Bengal tiger and three monkeys, and Rainier took pride in "showing off two injured lions he'd picked up during a cruise on the African coast.

"My father, at ease, let his charm work and a dialogue began," he added.

There was, however, Grace's reception in Cannes and "no time for a glass of champagne, not even time for a signature in the Palace's Visitor's book," Albert added. "It's as if the date of May 6, 1955, wasn't going to remain in the annals of the Principality."

In contrast, the McCall's Patterns floral dress worn by Kelly that day has since "become legendary." According to Albert, it is "carefully preserved" as part of the Palace's collection. 

When the pair's visit ended, Grace rushed back to Cannes. During her drive, she described the prince as "charming" de Havilland noted. "Afterwards, Pierre praised how flawlessly Grace endeavored to observe the protocol required for presentation to the prince."

"I guessed things had gone wonderfully well by Grace's manner upon returning from her presentation to Rainier," said de Havilland, who also attended the late Friday afternoon cocktail party in Cannes. "When she took her place at the head of the receiving line at the American reception, instead of offering her hand for a handshake, Grace extended her hand as if offering it to be kissed. She was in a state of enchantment."

After their initial meeting, Kelly and Rainier began a private correspondence. Despite rumors, they largely succeeded in keeping their developing romance secret until Rainier sailed for America, proposing seven months later during Christmas.

"What happened between May and January? How did my parents reconnect?" Albert asked in his Paris-Match interview. "As with any good story, a veil of mystery should revealed. My grandmother Kelly gave me the story involving the stay in Monaco, during the summer, of the Austins — friends of the family." 

Though Father Francis Tucker (a Vatican-appointed priest from Delaware who served as Rainier's "father confessor"), is thought to have played cupid between the couple behind the scenes, Prince Albert says that Margaret "Ma" Kelly also credited Russell and Edith Austin "with facilitating the idea of a reciprocal interest and feeling" between the lovers. 

The couple, who were neighbors of the Kellys at the Jersey Shore in the summer, were vacationing in France and hoped to attend a Monaco gala. Learning the July event was sold out in advance, the Austins decided to send an appeal to Rainier's palace, "as friends of Grace." Their request landed on Father Tucker's desk. 

Having played a hand in the beginning, de Havilland "was not particularly surprised by the [engagement] news, but I was particularly charmed by it," she recalled. Expecting the birth of her daughter, she was unable to attend "the wedding of the century" in Monaco alongside Galante.

They would only cross paths one other time. 

"I saw Grace Kelly only once in the long years after our meeting on the train and Cannes," said de Havilland. "I was lunching with an American friend at a restaurant in Paris and saw Princess Grace at a table across the room with Princess Caroline, then about 10 years of age."

"When they finished and were leaving, Princess Grace very graciously came to my table to greet me. Of course, I rose and curtsied."

Until her death, de Havilland maintained a rigorous schedule and correspondence. Days after her recollections were first pûblished by PEOPLE in 2017, she sent this author an unexpected note that read: "The story of Grace and Rainier makes very good reading, doesn't it? It has enduring appeal."
