TMZ journalist: It's been all over the internet the last couple of days about the newest love triangle Elisa Gonzales, Mick Schumacher and Y/n Verstappen. Let's take a look at this weird timeline of how Y/n betrayed her friend Elisa.
TMZ journalist: Y/n and Mick have been friends for a very long time, they met during her brother's karting days. Y/n and Elisa met back at Disney Channel when they both worked there and is said to be the one to introduce Elisa and Mick to each other. How did we end up here with her stealing her friend's man?
TMZ journalist: Have this been going on longer that the public is aware of? Did she get jealous because Elisa had a stable relationship for a very long time and she didn't? All we know right now is that poor Elisa is heartbroken while Y/n is living the best life of being a homewrecker.

Fantastic Fest was a great experience in seeing the range of artists out there making weird, disjointed art that doesn't seek to answer all the questions it presents. Amazing Elisa is one of those that made a fun revenge flick that...is unapologetic in its lack of explanation, and you gotta respect it for that.

Oh my goodness okay there’s this poem that I’m pretty sure you shared a couple of months back and it was about grief and it was the one where it was a sibling mentioning that her younger brother had been shot and it was long-ish and I was wondering if you remembered what it was called? Has a repetitive line that you quoted in your tags something like “brother you have to believe me” or something?? I remember that much only. It came back to me suddenly and I just need it so so bad. Ty in advance for your help sorry to bother
YES it’s “After My Brother’s Death, I Reflect on the Iliad” by Elisa Gonzales and don’t apologize for bothering it was amazing to be reminded of this poem & to reread it again

To My Twenty-Four-Year-Old Self - Elisa Gonzales
Sometimes you feel more intimacy with the woman who lives
in the apartment opposite—twenty years older, probably,
though she looks barely ten, devoted to evading age—
than with anyone stroked or kissed or otherwise handled.
You sit naked on the white sofa, lights on, looking into her home,
lights on.
She paints her toenails, watches a black-and-white film,
Hitchcock, maybe: there’s a woman with a platinum chignon.
She applies a green mask. A cream. A mystery ointment.
When you meet an older woman who resembles her, enough,
you do the obvious thing.
That woman says, after, Don’t ever leave me
but when you report to your friends
you change her words to Don’t ever forget me.
Typical of us, the lie and the lie.
Why couldn’t you tell the truth? That’s what I’ve come to ask.
Not to her—to your friends.
I can’t remember why it embarrassed you.
Was it that she was old enough not to bare her throat?
Or was it shame at yourself, for misunderstanding
how well you were understood?
(It always comes back to knowledge with us, doesn’t it?)
Maybe it doesn’t matter: you’ll think of this woman
so often throughout the years
that by some lights
you’ll have kept your vow.

Cesena, a Teatro Bonci “Voci per l’infinito. Beethoven – Schumann: grandi solisti per due capolavori”
Tumblr media
Defining Trauma (and writing it)
During intake with my new therapist, she recommended Pete Walker’s “Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving: A Guide and Map for Recovering from Childhood Trauma” (a title with two colons to let us know that it means business).
Because I want to get an A in therapy -- a goal that has nothing at all to do with C-PTSD, I’m sure -- I immediately bought the book and ripped through it. The speed of my reading is an indicator of digestibility rather than exceptional quality, which isn’t (necessarily) a knock: we’re living in a time when truly excellent resources on trauma are abundant and accessible, and my bar is high.
I did, however, mark the following definition of trauma, which elides the slippery and contentious debates over exactly how dreadful an experience has to be in order to merit the label by framing the matter, quite usefully, in terms of neurology:
“Trauma occurs when attack or abandonment triggers a fight/flight response so intensely that the person cannot turn it off once the threat is over. He becomes stuck in an adrenalized state. His sympathetic nervous system is locked ‘on’ and he cannot toggle into the relaxation function of the parasympathetic nervous system.”
...which reminded me of another passage in another (better) book about trauma, Laurence Gonzales’s “Surviving Survival: The Art and Science of Resilience” (a title with the acceptable number of colons: one):
“An ancient pathway in the brain, which scientists call the rage pathway, connects several areas to produce what neuroscientists call ‘affective attack.’ Affective means ‘emotional.’ When you are attacked, you automatically fight, scream, and bite. All mammals are born with this response. You don’t have to learn it. The rage pathway begins in the amygdala and sends signals to the hypothalamus, which monitors the state of your body and imparts tremendous powers of persuasion to all sorts of appetites, such as thirst and hunger. The rage pathway ties those structures in with an area called the pariaqueductal gray (PAG). The PAG is one of the places where you represent the physical self, both the outer and the interior body, and is involved in feeling pain and in responding to fear (freezing or fighting). The PAG also sends nerve fibers into the parts of the brain stem that control the jaw and face; biting and baring your teeth are part of the rage response. This response is so powerful that it can be overwhelming. It is, after all, meant to free you from the grip of a predator."
...which in turn reminded me of another passage in another (even better) book, Elisa Gabbert’s “The Unreality of Memory” (no colons at all):
“The psychologist and trauma specialist Peter Levine developed a model of what you might call trauma avoidance in prey animals. He observed that when they’re unable to flee or fight, they freeze instead—either hiding or playing dead. But while they are frozen, all the chemical activation associated with fight or flight persists. If the animal survives, once it’s safe it will need to ‘discharge’ this energy through shaking or trembling. He noted that humans also freeze in the face of threats, but rarely do they go through the discharge stage—likely because, as Scaer puts it, ‘dramatic shaking all over is “unseemly” or “hysterical,” and tends to be suppressed'...It’s like the fight-or-flight process can’t play itself out and so gets stuck.”
Taking these three passages together, we can conclude that trauma happens when the fight-or-flight reflex is triggered and cannot be turned off -- and when an attack activates the rage pathway but the physical response that is “meant to free you from the grip of a predator” is subdued or suppressed, leaving the survivor in a state of suspended chemical activation.
Gabbert connects this state to experiences of chronic illness and pain -- and indeed, survivors (especially of childhood sexual abuse) are more likely to experience both.
Looking at this conception of trauma, it’s useful for me (and perhaps for you) to think of C-PTSD as occurring when the conditions of trauma are also the conditions of life -- so enduring and seemingly inescapable that they become normal -- and so normal that any indication or suggestion that they may be abnormal can trigger a strongly negative and even defensive response.
This is something I’ve been thinking about in writing recently. In Part II/Chapter 18 of TGB, Luca has his first experience of conscious anger -- not at his abusers, but at the friends who are challenging his perception that the conditions of his life are normal. As a child subjected to extreme abuse in a society that sanctions it, he made the subconscious decision to accept the apparently universal consensus that his abuse is appropriate and deserved. This is a survival strategy: it’s what allowed him to stay sane. To bend without breaking.
As Gabbert says, “Abused children are prone to ‘inappropriate bonding’ with their abusers” -- and if the abuse is not just systematic but systemic, the product of a larger social logic, then the victim may also form an attachment to that logic itself, for the simple reason that it is the only way for them to make sense of the otherwise senseless violence that defines their lives.
Gabbert connects the inappropriate bonding patterns of abused children to the fact that laboratory rats, "when given shocks in a certain part of a maze, will tend to return to that part of the maze” even knowing that they will be shocked again. As the scientist who worked on this experiment puts it, “The familiar is more rewarding to the rats than the unknown.”
If abuse is “the familiar” -- if it is as deeply woven into everyday experience as the facts of gravity and inertia, and has itself taken on the quality of a fact -- then “the unknown” can be impossible to imagine.
Joan Didion says that we tell ourselves stories in order to live. In the context of C-PTSD, we believe the stories that other people tell us about ourselves -- no matter how awful -- in order to live. That’s why, when we are confronted by the falsity of these stories, it can feel as though our lives are at stake. We can become protective of the very people, systems, and behaviors that have most imperiled us.
The work of healing begins when we begin to imagine the unknown -- to shape in our minds a territory outside and beyond the world that has been given to us.
In the context of hurt/comfort, and thinking back to Levine’s model of trauma avoidance, we might think of this as the discharge stage.
Recs for h/c that writes the discharge stage particularly well:
- “A Little Life,” by Hanya Yanagihara
- “Like An Arrow Through a Flock of Doves” by @arsenicjade and @hoosierbitch
- “Marks Not Yet Made,” by empty_room
- “Freak Camp,” by brosedshield and LaviniaLavender
- “Broken Road” and “My Lips Have the Sin,” by @hoosierbitch
- “Motion Training,” by nonymos
- “Ipseity,” by SkyisGray
- “In Hell He’ll Be in Good Company,” by barbaricyawp
(The last three are Stucky, simply because that fandom is particularly interested in trauma recovery. No points for guessing why.)
Let this be a placeholder for a longer, better post in which I identify what the discharge stage can look like in fiction and why it’s an essential element of the comfort arc in h/c.
ETA: I would also LOVE recs for other works that focus on this aspect of the /comfort arc!

Hello my dear friend. I would like to ask a favor, would you know any poetry on the topic of siblings? I have experience more angst and anger and great sadness in my relationship with my younger sibling, younger brother. Many times I believe I’m overdramatizing and perhaps I am, but I cannot help it and feeling overwhelmed
I’m just not sure if anyone else has the same struggles (I am the eldest, I am female. #eldestdaughtersyndrome)
hi there! as an eldest daughter with two younger brothers i can relate. it's not always easy. i can't really think of many poems that center a sibling dynamic except 'after my brother's death, i reflect on the iliad' by elisa gonzales.... but here is a collection of quote and poem fragments about siblings someone compiled. really sorry i can't be of more help </3

hi there ! i’m looking to expand my muse list, so i’m adding a few new characters who you can find under the cut, along with a ( very ) brief, informal lil descrip of them. i’d love to get some starters going with them and get a feel for my newbies, so give this post a like if you’re interested in a starter from any of them ! i’ll come to you for muse specificity and to maybe work out a little plot.
Tumblr media
avery odelia cohen ! 30, bisexual, daughter of a billionaire tech mogul and murderer. ( riley keough. ) she has seen her family murder and get away with it, she has seen them steal and get away with it, so she was raised to believe she could get away with anything. like when she accidentally killed her first boyfriend in a freak drowning accident when she was sixteen? avery had no consequences. she’s terrifyingly privileged and protected by her father’s power, combined with her insanely high iq that no one suspects she has, she’s able to manipulate any situation to turn out in her favor. and more than one ‘accident’ has occurred in her life. she might even like it at this point.
Tumblr media
callista “callie” lucia ortiz ! 36, lesbian, university professor. ( aubrey plaza. ) teaching folklore and greek mythology was definitely a choice that callie’s parents didn’t understand, but she knew it was her passion and pursued it despite their disapproval. now she’s one of the leading specialists in the field and a sought out professor at a prestigious school. but she isn’t one of the stuffy and stuck up types that typically teach at her school. and most of the time, with success comes scandal, and there are definitely rumors circulating about her around school. and she hardly does anything to dispel them; she actually tends to revel in the attention and whispers that follow her through the halls.
Tumblr media
daphne josette byrne ! 29, bisexual, ghostwriter ( lily james. ) predominantly known on social media, it seems as if she’s an influencer in the making, but no one really knows just who daphne is. sure, the instagram ad payouts are nice, but she makes her real money ghostwriting for some of today’s most well known authors. she’s signed strict nda’s and binding contracts that will never allow her to spill the truth about the new york time’s bestseller she just write but knowing the success of her literature is rewarding enough. it allows her to live a life expressing herself as a successful writer and maintain normalcy in some twisted, modern way. but sometimes the secrecy does get old.
Tumblr media
elisa ianthe oliveira ! 28, bisexual, university student. ( camila mendes. ) double majoring in history and musical theatre, typical indecisive elisa, she also works part-time at the local museum and writes it off for extra credit. her parents are both mega history nerds and she was raised with dates and folklore being shoved down her throat constantly. she’s blunt, dry, and hard to tell if she’s having a good time, but tends to be fun to hang out with. soothingly genuine and keeps her private life private. but once you crack her intriguing interior, you truly do unlock another level to elisa, and she has no problem being her true self around you. it just might take awhile to get there.
Tumblr media
flynn arlo kapoor ! 35, bisexual, museum director. ( rahul kohli. ) he’s a first generation immigrant to parents who own a restaurant and work their ass off to make flynn’s life incredible and provide all the opportunities they can for him. and he hasn’t fucked up those opportunities. he finished grad school summa cum laude and was offered a position running a museum right out of school, which was his dream, so he quickly took it. he’s a big family guy and momma’s boy, and he made sure the new job was close by so he could always support his parents whenever they let him. family means everything to him, and he easily puts anyone he befriends genuinely into that catagory as well.
Tumblr media
ingrid dorothea langley !  26, pansexual, noblewoman. ( alicia vikander. ) much like emily dickenson, ingrid knew she was meant for more. meant for greatness. she lives every moment to it’s fullest and embraces every wild and weighty emotion she experiences. she’s full on all the time, and tends to be an open book. her sexuality is hushed in the times they live in, but she won’t ever not follow her heart where it leads. she’s optimistic and looks for the best in people and situations, and journals just about every moment in her life. she’s determined to never live a dull moment.
Tumblr media
peyton celeste kimura ! 22, queer, ballet student. ( kaylee bryant. ) focused is the best word to describe peyton. she’s always lived in her sisters shadow, from attending the same school to now living up to her quite infamous career, peyton does everything she can to be better. ballet is her life and she doesn’t let anything or anyone get in the way of her success. she’s insanely naturally gifted in the arts, but with the way she trains, you know that she has always doubted just how good she is. very hard on herself, never gives herself a break, and lets few people in. but cares deeply when she does.
Tumblr media
malia beckett dixon ! 34, bisexual, director. ( tessa thompson. ) malia truly knows what it’s like to find fame in a small town, having gotten ‘discovered’ her senior year of high school by a wealthy talent scout. she was swept away and appropriately funded to make her first indie film on a professional level, and hasn’t stopped producing award-winning films since then. she’s humble and emotional and uniquely in tune with who she is as a person and an artist. fame hasn’t gotten to her head but she does tend to get buried in her work and lose track of her personal life and relationships because of it.
Tumblr media
marguerite “marty” alejandra gallardo ! 30, lesbian, social worker. ( eiza gonzales. ) having loving parents who died at a young age, marty was left to fend for herself and her younger sister while they grew up in the system. living through it, she decided to take on a career that could help out and change children’s lives for the better, while also fostering a healthier life for her and her sister. she is an internally emotional person, and finds it hard to bottle up her feelings as much as she would like. she’s intelligent and her sister is her world, she would never let anything happen to her.
Tumblr media
sabina ines caldeira ! 21, pansexual, university student and heiress. ( alba baptista. ) raised in europe to wealthy parents who made their fortune off the vineyard she grew up on, sabine is the epitome of aesthetic spanish summers spent wine drunk and lusting for freedom. she’s pursuing life outside of that fantasy while going to school before having to learn the family business. luckily she loves the empire she will one day be taking over. free spirited and naive, she seems like you could walk all over her, but you might want to think twice about that.
Tumblr media
siena anne norwood ! 28, pansexual, vampire. ( florence pugh. ) she was turned in the height of the tudor era, a place where she sat on the king’s lap and thrived in court, but she wronged someone in power who targetted her as their next victim. the feeding didn’t go as planned and siena ended up becoming a vampire, and honestly prefers this life to her former one. she’s old and strong and much smarter and conniving than she lets on. she loves to fuck around and mess with people and has only met few who actually impact her life. truly little remorse for her actions.
Tumblr media
sebastian anthony hernandez ! ( nathan wallace — repo the genetic opera ) 28, heterosexual, repo man. ( sean teale. ) he works for a mysterious employer who sebastian only met when they made a mysterious donation for his heart surgery. the anonymous donor saved his life and pays well, so he doesn’t complain. he has a two year old daughter who isn’t in his custody to provide for and does whatever her can to make sure she’s always taken care of no matter how shitty the job. he doesn’t let anyone close to him for fear they will get hurt and he’s upset he can’t let anyone know his full self.
