9-1-1 REACTION
We finally get the conclusion for our harrowing season 7 opener! This reaction is for the season 7, third episode “Capsized” which originally aired March 28, 2024. The episode was written by Juan Carlos Coto and Lyndsey Beaulieu and directed by executive producer and Glee and American Horror Story director Bradley Buecker. Spoilers ahead!
Tumblr media
“It’s the pungent aroma of orange people having sex.” – Kianna Harris
We begin the episode by going back to the very beginning. We are introduced to the Harris family in a scene very much reminiscent of the 1990 comedy film Home Alone starring Macauley Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern and Catherine O’Hara. We see the youngest Harris sibling, Corey (played by Leo Abelo Perry) sitting on the curb playing his Nintendo Switch while his parents Lonnie and Eliza Harris (played by Eddie Blackwell Williams and Amy Argyle) argue over who is supposed to order the car for their drive to the airport. The rest of the Harris family is rounded out by older siblings Kianna Harris (played by Kiara Muhammad) and Keshawn Harris (Samuel Dunn III) and their grandmother Darlene Harris (played by Deborah Marcano). In true Home Alone fashion, they almost leave Corey behind.
Tumblr media
We switch over the cruise ship where Kianna and Keshawn are complaining about the smell of the ocean air. Meanwhile, Corey is still glued to his video game. We then see the Harris family walk by Norman and Lola Peterson (played by Daniel Roebuck and Romy Rosemont). Lola compliments Darlene on her hat. We also see quite a few moments of Corey nearly getting left behind including the moment when all passengers are told to evacuate the ship. When Eliza realizes Corey is not in the lifeboat with the rest of the family, she gets off in search of him. Poor Corey is blissfully unaware of the all the chaos erupting all around him until he feels the explosion several floors below. He sits up and climbs out of the top bunk. We see Corey looking out the window at the giant wave coming towards the ship.
Cue title card.
Tumblr media
“What are you all doing on the ceiling?!” – Norman Peterson
We see the aftermath of the ship capsizing. Everyone is accounted for except for First Mate Kenneth (played by Anthony Carvello) who we last saw in the crow’s nest trying to send a distress call right before the wave hit. Since nothing was ever mentioned about the poor guy in this episode, I’m gonna assume he’s sleeping with the fishes at the bottom of the ocean. OMG, they killed Kenny! Sorry, had to do it. Speaking of people not long for this world, our belligerent and greedy passenger Jarod (played by Christopher Livingston) is lying crumpled on what used to be the ceiling. The rest of our crew is huddled around the walls of the room while Norman Peterson is still strapped to the craps table which is currently on the ceiling.
Tumblr media
These first three episodes of the season are supposed to be an homage to the 1972 disaster film The Poseidon Adventure starring Gene Hackman and Shelley Winters, but this scene reminded me of the upside-down puzzle in the 2019 film Escape Room starring Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, and Tyler Labine. Bobby is concerned about the table Norman’s attached falling from what used to be the floor and goes to work using some red straps to fashion a rope which he uses to repel down on top of the bottom of the table. He ties the same red rope to each of the table’s legs and then uses a wrench to unscrew the bolts holding the table in place. The others down below slowly lower Bobby and Norman down. My heart was pounding so hard during this sequence. We usually don’t get to see Bobby in Tom Cruise Mission Impossible mode. He usually leaves the heroics up to Buck. Athena tells Bobby she wishes Buck could’ve seen him do what he just did. He tells her that he would’ve rather seen Buck do that.
“Bobby and Athena’s cruise ship might be missing.” – Maddie Buckley, to Howard “Chimney” Han
Tumblr media
Back on dry land, Maddie talks with Chimney about recent events. She tells Chimney that Hen has been cleared by Chief Simpson to come back to the 118. Chimney wonders that if that’s the case, why hasn’t she come back to work. He asks Maddie how she knows all of this, and Maddie tells him about Hen’s visit to the call center. She tells him that Bobby and Athena’s cruise ship might be missing and that the Coast Guard has attempted tried to reach out but hasn’t heard anything. Chimney asks if Hen reported any of this information to the chief. Maddie says that she did, and that Chief Simpson told her to report back to work. The 118 gets a call which means Chimney and Maddie have to end their conversation. Buck asks who is missing: Bobby and Athena or Hen. Chimney says both. As the ladder truck leaves, Hen sneaks into the station before the doors close.
“I won’t be an idiot if you won’t be a selfish harlot. Too late!” – Norman Peterson, to Lola Peterson
Tumblr media
Back on the ship, now that Norman has been lowered from the ceiling, Bobby suggests they all head to the bottom of the ship, which is now the top of the ship, remembering there’s an open hole there after the explosion. Julian (played by Rick Cosnett) thinks this is a bad idea because even if they somehow manage to make it to the top, there will be no one to save them. Lola tells him to lay down and die. Ouch! Bobby says that while they don’t know what will be waiting for them at the hull, they do know that if they continue to stay where they are, the ship will sink. The funniest part of this scene is when Bobby asks Julian to assist with moving Norman. Norman doesn’t want the man who has been having an affair with his wife to lay a finger on him. Lola tells him to not be an idiot. Norman tells all of them that if he’s going to die, he’s going to do it with dignity. With the help of the ship’s doctor, he is able to get up on his feet. The group make it out of the casino right as a grand piano falls down on the glass center causing water to rush inside.
“Nobody wants to look for a ship that hasn’t asked for help.” – Hen Wilson
Tumblr media
Hen sneaks into the office and fills out a Los Angeles Fire Department Property Resource Requisition form. She gets a call from Maddie who tells her she’s trying to get people to take their situation seriously. Maddie asks where she is and tells her she knows she didn’t go back to the 118. Hen asks if she’s checking up on her. Maddie tells her whatever it is she’s doing she doesn’t have to do it alone. Hen tells her that she tried using official channels but that didn’t work. Now she is going another direction. Maddie asks her what that means and Hen ends the call by telling her the less she knows the better.
“I know a little about you. That little squeak you make.” – Julian Enes, to Lola Peterson
Tumblr media
The ship is taking on water and Athena questions the path they are taking. Security Officer Wes (played Denzel Johnson) suggests using a door behind one of the cafes to access the maintenance shaft to get to higher ground. When he attempts to open the door, there’s another explosion. Security Officer Wes takes the brunt of the damage and quickly succumbs to his injuries. Bobby, Athena, and the rest of their gang are shocked by his death but press on without him. It was super sad watching the security officer’s body floating in the water. Now, just in case you’re keeping tabs on our remaining survivors, we have Bobby, Athena, the Petersons, Captain Ochoa (played by Mercedes Colon), Dr. Gibson (played by Eddie Jemison), and Julian left. At this point, the body count is rising faster than the water.
“That could be why I haven’t been getting your Christmas cards.” – Tommy Kinard, to Hen Wilson
Tumblr media
Hen takes her requisition form over to the Los Angeles Fire Department Air Operations unit. She introduces herself as acting captain from the 118 and tells the pilot named Melton (played by Thomas Hobson) she has an emergency requisition for a chopper and pilot. Melton looks over her form and tells her he hasn’t heard anything about a missing cruise ship. Hen says the situation is fast-moving due to the hurricane. Melton continues to question Hen’s motives but thankfully an old friend comes to the rescue. Former Los Angeles firefighter Tommy Kinard (played by Lou Ferrigno Jr.) tells Melton he and Hen used to work together at the 118 back when she was just a probie. I was so happy to see Tommy. I’m a big Lou Ferrigno Jr fan and the last time we saw him was way back in season 2 in the episode “Bobby Begins Again”.
Tommy tells Hen he has a chopper fueled and ready to go. Hen is confused by all of this and asks him what going on. Tommy tells her he’s just helping out an old friend. She asks him who called him. Tommy opens the door to the chopper and Hen sees Chimney, Eddie, and Buck inside. Eddie hands her a jacket and tells her to get inside.
“C’mon, guys. Stop agreeing with each other like you’re fighting. It’s weird.” – Eddie Diaz, to Howard “Chimney” Han and Hen Wilson
Tumblr media
Tommy flies them right into path of the hurricane. Things are really intense inside the chopper. Eddie and Buck attempt to break the tension by getting Hen and Chimney to talk to each other. Chimney is miffed because he thinks Hen doesn’t believe they all have her back. He says that they all faked having food poisoning to get them out of their shift at the 118. Hen admits that Chimney didn’t do anything wrong and that he doesn’t have to prove anything to her. Chimney tells her she didn’t do anything wrong either. Buck asks the two of them if they’re good. Hen says they’ve always been good. Chimney asks her why she didn’t reach out to them for help. Hen tells him she knew that if she told him, he’d want to tag along, and she didn’t want him to risk anything over some wild hunch she had. Buck says he will back her hunches any day of the week. No questions asked. Eddie voices his agreement. Buck says that if there’s any chance Bobby and Athena are in trouble, he doesn’t mind getting fired. Tommy says he doesn’t think anyone should be worried about getting fired because they’re probably not going to survive this mission. Yikes!
“Bobby! Bring him back to his mother and bring yourself back to me.” – Athena Grant, to Bobby Nash
Tumblr media
Back on the ship, our crew has stumbles across Eliza Harris, mother of Corey Harris, trapped under fallen debris. While Athena attends to her, Norman and Lola have a conversation about the state of their marriage. Lola admits that she let Julian use her. When Norman asks her why, she tells him it’s because he stopped touching her. She then points out that they’ve been together since they were 17 years old and that she’s never been with another man. I actually laughed out loud when Norman responded with, “Neither have I”. He asks her if she’s fallen out of love with him. Lola says she thought she had but she was wrong. Norman says he thought they’d be together until they both died, and Lola says she still wants that. Norman says that she might still get it.
Meanwhile, Bobby is trying to pry open the door that currently has Eliza’s arm penned. He breaks open a nearby case and takes out an axe. I got really nervous watching this scene because the last time I saw an axe brought out on this show, someone lost their arm. Thankfully, Bobby uses the axes to break the handle on the door. He’s now able to slide open the door; however, he quickly realizes the door was acting as a tourniquet for Eliza’s arm. With the door moved, Eliza is bleeding profusely. Bobby sends Julian to grab some blankets out of one of the nearby cabins to use as a tourniquet. Dr. Gibson finally does the thing he purports to do and manages to stop the bleeding. Bobby tells Julian the two of them are going to have to carry Eliza but the mother of three refuses to go without her son. Captain Ochoa says that the son’s room is on deck twelve. Athena offers to go look for him, but Bobby tells her to stay put. He will be the one to go search for Corey but not before he and Athena share one of those passionate kisses you only see in the movies.
“Who cares!?” – Tommy Kinard and the 118
Tumblr media
Tommy flies Hen, Chimney, Buck, and Eddie to the vicinity of where the ship last showed up on radar. He tells them they have about twelve minutes to search before he has to turn them around and head back. A message from Chief Simpson comes in over the radio but Tommy pretends there’s static and shuts off the radio.
“You were right. That is one big hole.” – Norman Peterson
Tumblr media
Athena leads the others minus Bobby to the giant hole made by the explosion. Athena hears a helicopter and tells the others that whoever is searching for them is expecting to see a cruise ship, not the bottom of one. Julian climbs up to the top and attempts to fire the flare gun. He slips, falls, and dies. I hate that he died. Yes, it’s because of him that things are as dire as they are and he’s definitely to blame for the deaths of First Mate Kenneth, passenger Jarod, and Security Officer Wes. I do wish he would’ve stayed alive, so he could’ve been taken into custody. Bobby manages to locate Corey and this kid has the nerve to say, he doesn’t talk to strangers. Lola, meanwhile, goes underwater and grabs the flare gun that Julian dropped as his body plummeted into the water. Athena sends off a flare and Tommy and the others are finally able to see the capsized ship. Just as a Bobby and Corey are about to drown, Buck and Eddie open a hatch and rescue them.
“Let’s talk about it in 10 or 20.” – Norman Peterson, to Lola Peterson
Tumblr media
Much like the episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star where Judd and Grace’s truck crashes into a lake, a lot of details of the actual rescue are glossed over in favor of a scene where we see everyone safe and reunited with their loved ones. Chief Simpson delivers a press conference and makes it seem like the rescue mission was his idea. Hen is relieved none of them are getting fired for going rogue to save Bobby and Athena. Hen thanks Maddie for tattling and Maddie says she will always have her back. I really like this scene because as I’ve said in a previous reaction, we rarely get scenes between these two characters which is funny to me considering how close Hen and Chimney are. Bobby gets off the helicopter and sees Athena. The two of them rush over to each other and share a kiss straight out of a golden age Hollywood film. Lola goes to see Norman before he is rushed off to the hospital. She asks if he’ll ever be able to forgive her. He implies they’ll talk about it after she gets out of jail. Lola is then escorted away by an officer. Bobby tells Hen he is proud of her and calls her captain.
“Alone at last.” – Bobby Nash, to Athena Grant
Tumblr media
In the final scene of the episode, a weary Bobby and Athena return to their home with takeout food. They sit on the sofa and sit in silence. This silence is much different from the kind Athena was worried about. Bobby jokingly says he needs a vacation and Athena says she needs a toothbrush. They talk about how all of their luggage is sitting at the bottom of the ocean and share a laugh. I love how they’re both wearing very touristy T-shirts they probably got from a gift shop once they made it back to land. The two of them kiss and run off to the bedroom.
Wow! What a satisfying ending to an amazing season opener. 9-1-1 is back and better than ever and they have the ratings to prove it. Words cannot express how happy I am to have this show back on TV. The move to ABC was a brilliant idea. Not only did it save the show, but the viewership has also gone up considerably. According to the 9-1-1 page on Wikipedia, since the switch from FOX to ABC, ratings have gone up from an average of 4 million viewers to over 5 million viewers. If the show continues in this direction, there’s no doubt in my mind about getting another season.
I’m glad we got the happy ending I was wanting for this story. Yes, we lost some people along the way, but I’m especially glad Athena, Bobby, and Norman Peterson survived. I honestly feel bad for Norman and how things unfolded. He seems like a decent guy and yes, maybe he did neglect his wife, but the response to that should never have been to cheat on him and turn to a life of crime. I hope we get to see him again at some point and see that he’s moved on with his life, hopefully not with Lola. I cannot see a reality where Lola doesn’t go away for a long, long time. I wonder what her son thinks about all of this. I imagine it must’ve been really embarrassing for him to see his mother naked on a billboard pointing a gun at the LAPD and LAFD.
Tumblr media
I’m also happy we got a happy ending for Hen and Chimney. These two are #friendgoals and I’ve never seen them fight like this before. I’m glad Hen was able to admit there were things she could’ve done better regarding the drunk driving incident, and I like that Chimney acknowledged he could have done things better as well. I’m glad that in the end, Chimney, Buck, and Eddie proved they had Hen’s back no matter what. They all risked their lives and their livelihoods to save their captain and Athena. That’s real friendship right there. I’m also glad that Tommy helped them out because he’s a big part of Hen and Chimney’s origin story at the 118.
Lastly, things seem to be back on track for Athena and Bobby. I like that their relationship issues weren’t magically remedied. They still have a lot of work to do but at least each of them understands where the other is coming from. Athena realizes that she’s not alone in the relationship and Bobby knows now that he is deserving of his second chance at love and life. I hope the next time we see them in therapy they’re together. Bobby and Athena are endgame as far as I’m concerned so I wasn’t too afraid for their relationship; however, it’s good to see that all relationships need maintenance.
This was an incredible episode, and I cannot wait to see what happens next. According to Wikipedia, we’re only getting ten episodes this season which I don’t mind. After the strikes last summer, I think most of us are just happy to have any new television right now.  As far as disaster episodes go, this one has been moved to the top of my list. The tsunami episodes from season 3 and the earthquake episodes from season 2 have been shifted down to the second and third spots on my list, respectively. I look forward to more action-packed episodes on 9-1-1. Until next time …

So, you've all requested I give an oc snippet/background from the poll!
Worldbuilding Context/Story Summary: BOT is a story about climate disaster leading into "time" disaster (the flow of time itself freezing/stopping) full of wars, political instability, and militarization. The current story begins at a few years after the 2nd Time War, of which was a civil war, where there has been more time collapse at an increasingly severe degree out of nowhere. Our main characters find ourselves investigating the cause. The story is meant to critique war, militarism, climate inaction, and many other things. The genre is action/fantasy/steampunk-esque.
This story has been a long time WIP that I've recently been rewriting. Thus, things are subject to being changed in the canon as i figure it out...* (for example, military titles may be changed as i currently am using basic ones as a place holder)
Character Info Below:
Name: Eliza Sherri Blackwell (she/her)
General Appearance: white. Dyed dark red long hair worn in pigtails with choppy long bangs, brown eye (Left) and glowing green prosthetic eye (right) due to time shard insertion (this eye can be used to enhance aiming/perception/zooming in). The prosthetic is due to eye-loss related injury. Left eye/face is heavily scarred due to stab wound. She wears an eyepatch over the prosthetic due to it causing migraines after long use. She is 5 foot 5 and 28 years old.
Occupation(s): Admiral of the Navy; Owner of a gun/projectile weapon's shop (which makes customs/etc.)
Uniform/Outfits: Naval uniform (when required), generally wears jumpsuits (black leather/etc.) with a light jacket and lace boots. Casual-wear can be anything, though i'd describe her aesthetic/fashion sense as very casual/baggy with lots of hoodies/snapbacks/etc.
General/non-spoilerish background: Eliza is the admiral of the navy, specifically supervising the branch at the country's capital & harbor (+ neighboring towns/county). Her boss is the Noble Senator: the Count of this city. She never wanted to join the military, nor lead a branch of it. She is married to another military officer (Clover) and currently her and her wife are leading the investigation to the most recent time disasters. Her parents hold religious and military influence.
Weapon proficiency: Her standard battling is around dual pistols & small hand daggers she hides in her boots. Though with her eye modification, she often will do long distance/sniping.

Happy Founders Day to the Women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority 🖤💛❤️🤍❤️ Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (ΔΣΘ; Deltas or DST) is a Greek-lettered sorority of college-educated women dedicated to public service with an emphasis on programs that target the African American community. Delta Sigma Theta was founded on January 13, 1913, by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University, many of who had been initiated into the Alpha chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. The Founders are Osceola Macarthy Adams, Marguerite Young Alexander, Winona Cargile Alexander, Ethel Cuff Black, Bertha Pitts Campbell, Zephyr Chisom Carter, Edna Brown Coleman, Jessie McGuire Dent, Frederica Chase Dodd, Myra Davis Hemmings, Olive C. Jones, Jimmie Bugg Middleton, Pauline Oberdorfer Minor, Vashti Turley Murphy, Naomi Sewell Richardson, Mamie Reddy Rose, Eliza Pearl Shippen. Florence Letcher Toms, Ethel Carr Watson, Wertie Blackwell Weaver, Madree Penn White, Edith Motte Young. The Sorority has more than 350,000 initiated members that are mostly college-educated women. The sorority has over 1058 chapters located in the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, England, Germany, Jamaica, Japan, Liberia, South Korea, and all 50 states. Delta Sigma Theta is a member of multiple umbrella organizations, including the NPHC, NAACP, and the NCNW. The National President and CEO is Elsie Cooke-Holmes. The Founders wanted to change the symbols, and motto, change the sorority colors, and be more politically oriented. This new name was to reflect the group's desire to change the direction of the group and change the philosophical underpinnings. The members of the new organization sought to move towards social activism and greater public service, rather than continue to focus on social activities. Membership is open to any woman who meets the requirements, regardless of religion, race, or nationality. In March of 1913, the Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. performed their first public act. They participated in the Women's Suffrage March. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was incorporated in 1930. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #deltasigmatheta https://www.instagram.com/p/CnW1x-ermDa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

ULTRAMagic Alternate Character Rules
Given how there is mature art for UMAE, I am going lay some ground rules.
Rule of Thumb: If I haven't drawn a character and they are not appropriate for mature art, they won't appear here on this blog and I will be not drawing mature art of them... FOR OBVIOUS REASONS.
Rules:
List of Characters:
Some things to note:
These changes are only retroactive to characters on the SFW only list. Unless I SPECIFICALLY ask you to take down art, you are fine.
If a character in my gallery is not listed here, it is most likely a retired character. Please do no draw them until I decide to use them again (my discretion). Note that this mainly applies to older characters. Some characters may not be ready to be placed on the list yet. This applies to newer characters. And I may have missed a character or two (let me know if that is the case)
I will not change my stance on the SFW characters, so don't even bother asking. I also reserve the right to move characters into the SFW category at my discretion.
Unless I specifically asked you take down art made prior to the list, assume you're fine
There is a lot of characters on display here, but just remember the following: This list covers multiple series, many characters are important to other characters, and there is overlap with younger and alternate versions of certain characters
Some of these characters will only ever be mentioned
All characters can be found in their respective folders.
Yes, I am fully aware this can potentially spoil future characters. And YES, I even alphabetized this for easy reading and reference. Also this will be updated as time goes on.
SFW Only characters:
Aoife Crawford/ULTRAMagic Devil
Bethany Briggs
Brendan (child + wolf)
Charles Blackwell Ford
Cynassa (young) (UMAE)
Dark lord Kris
Deadlock/Zas (young)
Dr. Ethan Luminate
Elaine "Ember" Gabriella O'Nessie

Orion
Randalph Theoprastus Scarfe
Stolas (young)
Terrus, Toa of Shadow
Trevor
ULTRAMagic Ex
ULTRAMagic Revenant
Will (child)
Zelgo (Pre-reboot)
Verdict: These characters are either too young, not human, are legitimately not into NSFW, or are a unique situation. If I find NSFW art of these characters, I will expect you to take it down ASAP.
Please refrain from NSFW/Mature art of:
Buster Ash
Brendan (adult)
Captain Roger
Cynassa (UMAE)
Ellen the Wayward
Ignatius "Infinity" Daren Ford
Kyu #9
Lucifuge Rofocale (UMAE)
Olivia Briggs
Stolas (UMAE)
ULTRAMagic Walker
Vladislav Velimir Faust
Verdict: I am not saying no, but I'm also not saying yes. Please refrain from drawing NSFW/Mature art of these characters.
NSFW/Mature art wouldn't make sense for:
Abraham Van Helsing (UMAE)
Adrien Irons
Af, Angel of Anger (UMAE)

Archangel Raguel (UMAE)

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
One of my earliest memories is of finding a treasure trove. I was in my Aunt and Uncle’s house (a beautiful house in a small village outside Wolverhampton, that is still the model for the type of house I would like to live in one day), sitting in front of a gigantic wooden bookcase. Or at least it seemed gigantic, to my young eyes. It was filled with books of every size and colour. Some were very old, leather-bound books, and some were newer editions, with colourful jackets and pictures on the front cover. One title caught my eye instantly. It was bright red, small, and bound in leather. The cover and pages were worn, and it had clearly been read and enjoyed many times. It was called Jane Eyre.
I remember opening the book and reading the small text on the first page. It said, “There was no possibility of taking a walk that day”. Why? I was intrigued. I read onwards. But after a few lines, I was confused. Who was speaking? Was this Jane Eyre? Who were the other people the mysterious narrator mentioned – Mrs Reed, John, Eliza and Georgiana? They couldn’t be Jane’s family, surely? They didn’t share her name. Why was she lurking in the window seat, "cross legged like a Turk?" Why was she observing the family but not joining them around the fireplace? The language stuck in my throat (“The said John and Eliza”) and made no sense. After reading a couple of pages, I put the book down.
The next time I visited, I returned to the treasure trove of books and once again Jane Eyre caught my eye. This time, I asked to take it home with me and started again. I made it a bit further on this second go around, and solved the mystery of who the Reed family were in relation to Jane (Mrs Reed is her widowed Aunt, and the three children are her cousins). I recall being very saddened by the cruelty Jane experiences during her time with the Reed family, and wondering why no one seemed to love this lonely little girl. When Jane is shortly afterwards sent away to Lowood school, I felt a strong sense of injustice when, having finally been given a chance to make friends and spend time around other like-minded children, she is branded a liar and the other children are instructed not to befriend her. I think at this point my sensitive young mind found the novel simply too upsetting, and I decided I couldn’t read another word.
Years later, I attended a university lecture on the concept of the madwoman in the attic. I remembered my previous attempts at reading Jane Eyre, and that shamefully, as a child I had given up on it. I remembered how much I had enjoyed Wuthering Heights and wanted to read something similarly engrossing and dramatic. I suddenly developed an urge to give it another try. But I was in Newcastle upon Tyne, and that beautiful red leather copy was back at home in Walsall (a 3-and-a-half-hour train journey away). So, the next day, I walked to my local book shop, Blackwell’s, and purchased a copy.
That night, I sat down to begin again – this time, I didn’t stop until I had finished. Night after night, I would settle in with the autobiography of Jane Eyre, and I can say without doubt that each new instalment thrilled me. This wasn’t a sad story about intense cruelty, with a terrible denouement for its characters, like Wuthering Heights. It is instead the story of a survivor, of someone who rises above the cruelty and anxiety of her childhood to become a passionate woman with a distinct sense of self-worth. It is also about the internal struggle between Jane’s desire to be loved, and her desire for freedom. After I finished the book, I missed it terribly.
For those who have never read Jane Eyre, it tells the story of an orphaned girl who, when her parents die, is sent to live with her cruel aunt and cousins (the widowed Mrs Reed, John, Eliza and Georgiana), who treat her as less than a servant. After angering the difficult Mrs Reed one too many times, she is sent away to Lowood school, where she befriends the introverted Helen Burns and eventually stays on to work as a teacher. After teaching for two years, Jane longs for new experiences out in the wider world, and accepts a position at Thornfield Manor, where she befriends the housekeeper, Mrs Fairfax, and teaches a lively young girl named Adele. Adele is the ward of Mr Rochester, a mysterious man with whom Jane finds herself falling in love. Jane and Rochester begin a tentative romance which culminates in a marriage proposal. However, on their wedding day, Jane discovers that Mr Rochester is already married: to Bertha Mason, whom he married in Jamaica as a young man. The mentally disturbed Bertha now lives at Thornfield, isolated in the attic with her nurse. Appalled and horrified, Jane flees Thornfield and is forced to sleep outside, penniless and begging for food. She is rescued by the Rivers family, three kindly siblings who take her in and help her to find work at a local school. St John Rivers eventually proposes marriage and a new life overseas as a missionary. However, after hearing Rochester’s voice calling her name one night over the moors, Jane realises that she cannot abandon the man she loves. She returns to Thornfield to find that it has been burnt to the ground by Bertha Mason, and Rochester has been left blinded. At his new residence Ferndean, Jane and Rochester re-build their relationship and eventually marry.
For readers who have read both Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, we can make a series of comparisons between the two works. Both contain elements of the gothic. An isolated house in a moody, windswept location. An anti-hero / love interest in the forms of Heathcliff and Mr Rochester. But while Cathy and Heathcliff’s story ends in tragedy, with the male protagonist made only more bitter by the events of the novel, Jane and Rochester’s story ends happily, with him redeemed and changed by her love. It is important to note at this point that, particularly for readers interested in the feminist aspects of Jane Eyre, that their relationship is reconciled on Jane’s terms. Throughout the novel, Jane largely enjoys economic autonomy, working independently and engaging in useful and worthwhile work as a governess and teacher. She desires a marriage based on love and companionship, not for financial gain or a loveless partnership. Her experiences with Reed family and at Lowood school bestow her with a strong self of her own self worth. When St John Rivers proposes marriage following her split with Rochester, it is based not on feelings on love but a partnership based around a common purpose. She refuses his proposal. Following the reveal of Rochester’s wife in the attic, she also refuses to stay at Thornfield, horrified at the thought of living as his mistress.
That copy of Jane Eyre bought from Blackwell’s bookshop still sits on my bookshelf. It is now missing a front page but is otherwise largely intact. I have returned to it several times over the years. What I love most about Jane Eyre is her ability to survive, no matter what life throws at her. Her influence on my life has been enormous. She showed me that it is possible to survive. No matter what terrible events come our way, we have the ability to survive. Life goes on, whether we like it or not, and we can either choose to move forwards with it or remain trapped within each situation or feeling.
In my life, I have been made redundant several times. I have had two breast cancer scares. My heart has been broken so badly I thought that it would never mend. I have reached out in friendship to people who took advantage of my kindness. I have struggled throughout my adult life with bouts of depression, the most recent of which was so serious that even considering writing about it terrifies me. But somehow, I survived. I chose to survive. A small part of me refused to be beaten. She kept going, chose to get out of bed each morning and hold her head high. She chose to move forwards and choose happiness.
Jane Eyre is a book that everyone should read at least once in their life. In addition to the theme of survival, it is a novel about the struggles between passion and conscience, wanting to belong versus being an outsider, wanting to be loved versus the desire for autonomy. The plot is evenly paced, and it is never boring (despite what my 7-year-old self would have told you!) It is not a difficult novel to read, with such well-developed descriptions of Jane’s emotions that it is hard not to feel moved. Many quotes from Jane Eyre have passed into common parlance. Try these on for size:
“Reader, I married him”.
“I would always rather be happy than dignified”.
“I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself”.
“I am no bird, and no net ensnares me.”
It says a lot about Jane Eyre and its influence on my life, that the last of these quotes now sits on the wall in my study, facing my desk.
At moments when I feel overwhelmed, when I feel anxious, trapped, or when I can feel myself slipping into the dark hole of depression, I take a moment to read that quote and remember that I am an independent human being. My self worth lies in my own hands, not in others. I can stay quiet, as I have done for so many years, or I can use my voice to say the things I want to say. I can wallow and lose myself in my current state, or I can choose to do as Jane does and pick myself up, move forwards and fly away from my troubles.
I choose the latter.

They say Angelica and Eliza,
That they were both at his side when he died.
Eventually, you found true peace in your life, as did Thomas and Eliza. She forgave him for his affair with Nadia Reynolds, for a lesson her son’s death had taught her was that there were more important things in life than holding onto grudges.
They went on to rebuild their marriage, while you found work doing business with dignitaries on behalf of Jimbaari as well as Larione.
You and Thomas found your fond feelings for each other again, often going for long walks together in the park and reading Scottish tales to the children.
Life was good. You were content. But when has contentment ever lasted for the oldest daughter of Larione?
One morning, you were outside watering a single red rose you and Thomas had planted together when Eliza came running out, hollering, “(Y/N)! (Y/N), it’s Thomas.”
You looked up at her confused but didn’t ask any questions, simply taking her hand and following her to the carriage and allowing her to explain once you were inside. She told you that Thomas had been gravely injured early that morning in a duel with that insufferable Aaron Blackwell.
You and Eliza ran into the hospital, hand in hand, immediately begging to see Thomas. The doctor permitted it, seeing as you were family, but he let you know the bullet had punctured Thomas’ rib, and it was unlikely he would survive.
The sight you saw upon entering the hospital room broke your heart. Thomas was lying on an operating table, a white piece of fabric covering his bullet wound.
“Oh, Thomas,” Eliza said, tears filling her eyes as she rushed to his side.
You were simply speechless, rushing to the other side of him.
“Oh, my dear girls. I fear I don’t have much time left.”
He turned to Eliza. “Oh, my Yelizaveta, The consolations of Religion, my beloved, can alone support you; and these you have a right to enjoy. Fly to the bosom of your God and be comforted. With my last idea; I shall cherish the sweet hope of meeting you in a better world. Adieu, best of wives and best of Women. Embrace all our darling Children for me. Remember, I am forever yours.”
Eliza nodded, a sad smile painting her face.
Thomas then turned to you, his hand cupping your face. “And oh, my dearest, (Y/N), you are eternally my dearest partner of greatness,” you let out a sob at the Macbeth quote, “I hope you shall never forget your most affectionate soldier. Wherever I am, believe always that there is no one who can pay a more sincere or affectionate tribute to your deserts than I do.”
You smiled gently, nodding. But before you could quote Lady Macbeth back at him, his hand went limp. His eyes turned cold. At that moment, Thomas Holland was dead.
Eliza screamed in agony, clutching his limp hand tightly. You fell to your knees, wrapping your arms around yourself as you shook with sobs.
There was nothing but sadness for a great long while after that.
But you and Eliza quickly realized there was no more time for tears.
You went on to live another forty years. You helped your dear Eliza tell Thomas’ story, interviewing soldiers who fought with him, and publishing essays as a tribute to his genius and eloquence. You spent much of your life dedicated to traveling between countries of the world, addressing any disputes or conflicts between them. You briefly returned to Saataun and helped Eliza establish the first private orphanage in the city. After which, you went to the island where Thomas was born, establishing your own orphanage there. You’re sure Thomas would have been happy to see all the work you went on to do. You never did have any children because although you were married, your heart belonged to Thomas, and that never changed, even after his untimely demise.
Eventually, at the age of fifty-eight, after a life well-lived, you passed peacefully in your sleep.
Eliza found herself at peace with your passing, knowing you were happy with all you had gone on to do. She made sure you were buried in Trinity Church near Thomas and Peggy, just as you had requested.
And so, here ends the story of Princess (Y/N) of Larione. She was intelligent, ambitious, protective, and generous to a fault.
In the end, Princess (Y/N) was satisfied, and that was the greatest gift she had ever had the honor of receiving.
-
You open your eyes, scanning your surroundings. You’re in your old chambers. The ones you grew up in. You stand, confused, looking at yourself in the mirror. You’re in a stunning teal gown with multicolor flowers embroidered into the fabric. You look young. Suddenly, you hear your favorite song playing. It was written by a composer who never amounted to anything, but you had always loved him.
You wander down the familiar corridors of Larionian Court, following the sound of the music. You find yourself in front of the double doors of the ballroom, two doormen smiling brightly.
“Princess, welcome home.”
They swing the doors open, and you feel nostalgia hit you like an ocean wave. The setting resembles the Winter’s Ball. The one you attended all those years ago.
You look around in awe as you see faces you never thought you’d see again. Friends you’d lost in your youth, your favorite stablehand, Baron Alexander of Ville de New York. As you get closer to the end of the ballroom, you begin to see your nearest and dearest.
On your right, is your dear sister Peggy. Your younger sister smiles gently at you, stroking your face and kissing your cheek. On your left, you see your mother. She looks the same as you remember her. “I’ve missed you, my (Y/N),” she says. The tenor and rasp of her voice is just the way you remember it.
As you approach the end of the ballroom, you see the silhouette of the person you’ve missed most in the world.
It’s Thomas.
His hair is long and silky, just as it was when you first met him, and he is wearing his military uniform. His eyes are as beautiful as ever. You can see the hard-won wisdom he had earned in them. They aren’t weary anymore, they are shining with adoration.
For you.
“I’ve been waiting for you. Welcome home, my dearest, (Y/N).”
He extends his arm out to you, inviting you to dance. You take it and allow him to lead you to the center of the ballroom floor. He gently strokes your face, planting a soft kiss on your forehead. You smile lovingly at him, placing your hand on his shoulder, and allowing him to lead you into a waltz.
There is no one else but you on the ballroom floor. It’s just you and Thomas, finally sharing the dance you promised him all those years ago. That is how you will spend the rest of your days. Dancing with your one true love for eternity.

This was just a little something that came to mind is all. Besides, there have been days when i have compared these three with each other as well.
In the first corner, we have the young naturalist-in-training and Animal Buff; Elizabeth "Eliza" Thornberry, the second-born globetrotting daughter of the well-known naturalists, Sir Nigel and Marrianne Thornberry, the one with the ability to speak to Animals of all kinds.
In the second corner, we have the young archeologist-in-training and member of the Medjai order; Alexander "Alex" Rupert O'Connell, the only son of archeologists, Rick and Evelyn "Evy" O'Connell and the Supreme Medjai of old legend,
And in the final corner, we have the young cryptozoologist-in-training/adventurer-in-training; Zak Saturday, the only son of Dr. Solomon "Doc" Saturday and Drew Blackwell Saturday, as well the reincarnation of the ancient malevolent Sumerian Cryptid, Kur, who once terrorized the ancient world.
Who will claim victory?
