Our Flag Means Death does a great job at tackling multiple queer characters and gay moments in ways that prioritize LGBT members in a narrative including pirates, adventure, and a well done kiss scene. But what this gay pirate show called "Our Flag Means Death" does just as well with its exploration of queerness, is use Taika Waititi’s Blackbeard -- through his relationship with the main character Stede Bonnet -- to tell an allegorical story about how close-knit toxic masculinity is to internalized homophobia leading up to the kiss scene, and how one’s journey of emancipation can be more difficult than it seems.
