"you shouldnt use ai for schoolwork because its not actually helpful" this is true "and anyways if you cant even write a 600 word essay then you're stupid and an idiot" well now i think we've gone too far in the wrong direction.

yeah so if you genuinely don't know how to write an email instead of using chatgpt and getting something that 1: has a chance to just fucking suck (and potentially be noticeably AI) and 2: uses stolen content, ruins the environment and indicates to the gen-AI companies that you want more gen-AI bullshit that will steal things and ruin the environment, you can look up how to write an email or look up email examples. here's a website, here's another, here's the wikihow page (it's a bit shit but it does its job), here's a good one for formal emails, and here's an email I sent today (more examples under the cut):

something that's really annoying right now is that most websites are desperately trying to sell you their cool funky AI friend that can write the email for you, and look at me: you have to tell it to go fuck itself (in your head, don't use it). this isn't about you being a moron for not being about to write an email, I struggled with it for a while too, I still do sometimes, writing emails notoriously sucks. gen-AI sucks more.
also, this might not be the case for everyone, but please at least try to learn how to write the email before using chatgpt, it will help you forever. if you have a question about emails or if you're not sure how to write one specific email, you can send an ask: I'm not all-knowing but I'll do my best to help.
I can mostly help for college/high school levels and I am studying in a French school, so the codes may not be exactly the same, but I am in fact being taught by English speakers, sometimes native ones.
I'll give more general advice at the end, but here are a few examples of emails I would send.
If there's even a small chance of your teacher not recognizing you, write at the top something like "I am Name Last name, I am in your X-Y-Z class on Mondays from 8AM to 9AM". This isn't too useful in high school because your teachers likely know you, but in college your teachers might not. This will give them context.
Do your best to avoid typos or grammar errors. Reread your email, especially if the teacher is a language teacher.
Be polite, always, unless the teacher explicitly specified they don't care.
You do not need to beg for anything, don't debase yourself, and if a teacher makes you debase yourself, report them. You shouldn't have to beg for something that you ask for in an email. (so no more than one please per email, and avoid this one please if possible).
If it's possible and safe for you, prefer discussing important matters IRL.
Remember who you're talking to. Is the teacher strict or chill? Younger or older? Are they a white abled man or a Black disabled woman? Are they very into "respect the teacher!!" or do they put themselves at your level? Are you a 15 y/o high school student or a 20 something college student? Is this teacher familiar with you? Have they been understanding in the past? etc.
Generally, despite all my warnings above, a simple polite email will be fine with most teachers. If you're not sure how to identify the above possibilities or how to alter your emails depending on them, just write a formal, polite email (like seen above).
Some universities have online courses that teach you how to write emails. If there is a web-type course in your university and you can take it, take it.
Mine has one. I hate it. They defined a tweet as a "post on a blogging platform". I have to complete it or I don't pass. It still has a good tutorial for writing emails. You are lucky in the sense that emails are like the basic thing that even the boomer teachers know how to do (even if they don't like doing it), so there are a lot of resources for people who haven't written emails yet and need to learn.
If possible, ask your teacher at the start of the year what email to contact them with - if you're lucky, they'll say things about what kinds of emails they want.
If you're lucky still, someone else will send a shit email and the teacher will make a point during the class to remind how to write a proper email.
I put "Dear name" everywhere, but if it's not an extremely formal setting, some teachers will be fine with a "Hello". If you're not sure of the receiver's gender, use their title (Dr. etc).
For the extension: sometimes teachers aren't allowed to give you an extension or are assholes who don't want to give you an extension. In that case, don't bother writing another email (again: don't beg. + it will make them dislike you which you don't want).
This works more in work settings, but I read once that it's good to say "I will be taking a day off" rather than "May I take a day off/is it possible to take a day off". Just say that it's going to happen.
Know your rights. I can't know them for you. Figure out what the teacher can and cannot do through legal documents on your school's website or whatever. Know your rights depending on your state or country.
If you have a bad memory and don't want to have to look up how to write an email everytime, open your notes app or your blocknote or any preferred place to take notes and write down the important. I'd advise to note common greetings, subjects, opening and closing lines. Same for your teachers, if you need to remember which one is a bitch and which one is chill, write their name down with a description.
#people who know how to write emails. I'm calling you. post email examples lmao#like if you have time to make a guide or to compile examples. do it#mumblings//#emails#how to write an email#chatgpt#(if you're a tech bro and you see this: do not bother I will block you)

a wild moment at work today, when my boss (at the end of quite a long speech about why I should track my work better) essentially said, "but you're not getting any credit for your accomplishments!" and I realized I genuinely didn't care.
#I mean part of this is that she wants credit for being my boss and I simply have no desire to assist with that.#but it doesn't particularly matter to me that an email blast doesn't give me credit.#I know what I do. I know what value I offer. I have solid professional relationships and if they fired me....well.#(best not enjoy that particular gloating daydream too much.)#she brought up one of the attorneys who - during a recent group meeting - talked about collaborating with me#as an example of ''not getting credit''#and excuse me? the prompt was all about collaboration! the point was to give an example of how you collaborated!#the attorney even ASKED FOR PERMISSION before the meeting; I said that it was fine to use as an example#I got namechecked TWICE during that meeting for two different projects I was very pleased.#sorry you apparently hate your coworkers and feel the need to duel them in a conference room but I'm fine.#no wonder the company has to secretly manipulate you

community college is so funny because half of the teachers are like "For this class you need to use lockdown browser for all quizzes and tests. You need to buy this 70 dollar textbook, and all papers turned in must be in APA format with a title page even if they're only 500 words long. I will not accept late assignments. Also you have a minimum of 4 assignments a week." and the other half are like "you don't need proctoring for the final exam I trust you. here's a download link to a pirated copy of the textbook. as long as your writing is coherent and demonstrates an understanding of the material I literally could not care less what format you use. I can't figure out how canvas works so I'm not giving you due dates, just make sure it's turned in before the grading period ends. your only weekly assignment is a forum post with a minimum of 100 words."
#my favorite teacher so far is still the film history professor I had in my first semester.#he was very old and didn't understand how canvas worked at all and sometimes had trouble opening a video file#but simultaneously he was tech literate enough to recommend we use firefox with an ad blocker#because whenever someone missed class and was like 'where do i go to find the movie' he'd be like 'use an ad blocker and google it'#he said the school made him stop emailing links to free movie sites because people would open them on chrome with no ad block#and there'd be borderline malware on them. like this guy gave me the impression he was like. a veteran movie pirate lol.#that class had barely any assignments. like there wasn't a final exam or anything.#he just wanted us to write a paragraph or so answering a few questions about the movies we watched. it was chill.#and i also learned a lot actually. like i didn't know what a nickelodeon was before then. or the Hays Code.#the movies were genuinely good. i never thought Id be that into old black and white movies or westerns for example but they actually slapped#some of them had really mature themes and i definitely started to understand the people on this website who are like#'if the only media you consume is children's media you should maybe branch out instead of calling steven universe problematic'#because a lot of the movies we watched depicted very 'problematic' things and were able to directly address them because they are for adults#(to clarify I didn't just like kids media before then. i just mean that it introduced me to some older stuff i didn't think I'd like)#(but i ended up liking a lot. it also made me realize that movies made today are kind of shit. which i also already knew)#(but it put it more into perspective because I have more to compare it to)#im rambling now. community college is pretty swag i enjoy it. and i do get along with the teachers who have crazy requirements too lol.

in northern ireland during the troubles (and before) catholics used murals as a way of both claiming territory/identity and taking up space in public when they couldn't march. it was a way of forcing their voices to be seen and heard when the media and the government were against them. it was a way of protesting. i will elaborate later but do you get me. marching, posting - all good but not the only way to resist. there is so much in our arsenal and we aren't exploiting it. you don't need 100k followers or ten thousand people marching with you to make your voice heard - you can start now, alone. make it impossible for palestine to slip from public consciousness, make everyone know and everyone remember
#murals are just an example btw#for talentless fucks such as myself posters stickers and graffiti also work#protestants also used murals btw. they did it first in fact#catholics only really picked it up after bloody sunday and shit#ok might actually make a post later bc murals and shit played a pretty big role#very interesting. to me ig#anyway history repeats!!! this struggle has been fought and won before#learn from what has helped snd what has worked#i feel as though many of us are stuck in a loop of not really being able to do shit besides. email post and weekly protests#all good for sure but there is more you could do#there always is#palestine#gaza#free palestine#israel#northern ireland#ireland#free gaza#colonialism#genocide#ethnic cleansing#politics#social justice

*crawls onto dash like an axolotl*
i- i am alone. back home. writing time.
#I got halfway through Authority and it's honestly pretty baller. I think the protagonist will connect less with most people but#It still has that juicy juicy deranged Annihilation flavor. Oh your family was fucked up and that's why you can understand The Horrors#I want to carry the author over the threshold bridal style or something.#Also I got halfway through 'Foundations' which was written by a physicist noble prize winner with grossly inflated sense of ego who#was trying to make a religion out of Abductive Reasoning while barely knowing how Abductive Reasoning works. All his social takes#were fascinatingly bad (not wrong to be clear; just bad examples no solid logic) and he also clearly gave the halflife of C14#and proceeded to say that we used it for figuring out Neanderthals were in Europe a few hundred thousand years ago.#I swear to god physicists should have emotional support geologists they can consult on the phone whenever they're feeling#a bit spicy about psychology and philosophy and it would save the world half a dozen bad takes.#His physics and 'layman' outline of how the physical world works though was really good. I quite liked that though. I would've#finished the book except it's my brother's and it's not good enough I would steal it. Except that fucker bought#THE ALTERATION OF ECONOMIC GEOLOGY and for HIMSELF not ME and that I might yoink lol.#Anyway COOL I AM BACK IN MY OWN BED I CAN RESPOND TO SOME EMAILS AND TRY TO AIM FOR CHAPT 34#I hope everyone had a really good Christmas! <3#ptxt

When you tell people they should be sending every spare penny to their chosen Gaza fundraiser or they are Bad. But then it all gets a bit too stressful so you have to leave tumblr. :(
#if you know who i'm talking about don't say the username let's be civil#to me this is an example of dishing it out but you can't take it#like oh does it not feel good to feel like shit? you need a break?!#btw i've spoken with the organiser of the fundraiser in question- they live in pennsylvania#according to them they are withdrawing the money a few thousand dollars at a time from the GFM#then transfer the money to the family in gaza out of their account and eat the fees (so kind! there is no proof though)#there's also no way to prove that none of the money raised stays in their account. i have only seen some transfer screenshots#which frankly could be anything. the gfm still says the money is for evacuation but the organiser now says (to me) it is for daily food etc#but the campaign still talks about evacuation. i have asked them to update it to make it clear money is being spent on other things#and to explain if the plan is still to evacuate- that is why these gfms have high goals because of that war profiteering egyptian company#people donate so people can FLEE to SAFETY and if that's no longer the plan you must SAY THAT#they probably will not update the gfm though#it's not like there are 10s of 1000s of dollars involved here or anything /s#i am extremely concerned that at least some of these funds are being skimmed by the bank account owner#i've been watching gfm scamming from waaaay before 7/10 made evacuation from gaza an urgent matter#and large amounts of money is so so soooooo tempting for an everyday person#like easy access to that amount of money that is not rightly yours is dangerous!!#i hope someone is investigating this issue- might email the podcast the opportunist and see if they can have a look

apologies for offering unsolicited advice but I know where you MIGHT be able to find copyediting work if you are interested
oh i am definitely interested! admittedly i'm kind of jaded at this point - i worked for the same editorial and translation agency for 7 years, only to get dropped without a word when the companies that typically commissioned us started pivoting to ai translation - but copyediting is still like,, the one thing i'm qualified to do lmao. please feel free to send me any pointers you have in these troubled times
#i had a weird incident the other week where i applied for some freelance copyediting work#passed a bunch of editorial tests#wrote some example copy for them based on prompts#was told 'congratulations you did good we'll get back to you soon about next steps!'#and then (a week later) received an email saying 'thank you for your time but we will not be progressing with your application any further'#and when i wrote back like ???? no one ever responded. so.#still don't know what went wrong or why they changed their mind and now i guess i will never know lol

what are your fandoms? I’m curious. Do you have any you haven’t posted about?
uhhh IDK actually lol I don't partake as much in fandom culture as I used to in the past. so, unless it's a hyperfixation, i usually won't talk/post much about it. -but things that I have fell in love as of recently(besides epic the musical): Dungeon meshi, the elusive samurai, baldurs gate 3, who made me a princess, I’m Stanning the Prince and DBD - fandoms that ive been part to but have not interacted with it for some time: Homestuck(i mean,... 90% of my old cosplays were just homestuck), PJO (I may go back to it cuz i want to reread the books and maybe watch the new tv show), Overwatch (still play sometimes, just not as much into it as used to), harry potter (the whole transphobic thing from jk rowling left a bitter taste on my mouth), doctor who and glee - things that will be forever in my heart and love talking about: Lord Byron, mythology in general, fun historical facts, musicals, THE SECRET HISTORY (my favorite book in all time, I have 3 versions of the book)
#new ask tag who dis#tbh i have a terrible memory so Im prolly forgeting lots of stuff#and there are stuff that either I like but I dont love to the point i feel it would be considered a fandom#or stuff that idk if youd consider as fandom as they are basic stuff that most people kinda love#for example ive been addicted to sabrina carpenter's music since “emails i cant send”#ive also started listening more to chappell but i only know 5 songs from her as of now#tbh I love music in general#I specially love listening to music from different cultures and sugesting songs from my country#uhhhh I also been rewatching game of thrones and watching/reading fire and blood#and its fading out rn but Ive been addicted to watching UNHhhh
