Sightings of Easter Bunnies, 1990s-2000s. While popular western mythology has adopted a singular “Easter Bunny” as a childrens’ holiday mascot akin to Santa Claus, actual Easter Bunnies are in fact a diverse species of “house demons” regarded as pests in most realms (cosmically, humans are considered unimaginably vile for celebrating Easter Bunnies alongside their gods).
Foul-smelling, disease-carrying, and devoid of language, Easter Bunnies lay colorful eggs annually which they leave as “gifts,” seeking to gain an invitation into a host home. But once invited into your home, it is very difficult to get an Easter Bunny to leave. They may present as givers, but make no mistake, they are there to take: At night they rifle through your belongings, taking small odd things here and there to decorate an underground nest they spend most of the year building out of trash and their thick, paste-like bile. Easter Bunnies are filthy and mischievous demons; they are able to walk among us mostly just slightly out of quantum phase, imperceptible to the human eye, which allows them to watch you at night when you don’t realize it. They particularly enjoy watching humans in times of quiet privacy: showering, using the toilet, dressing, and especially masturbating. They are notorious panty-sniffers, and nothing attracts Easter Bunnies more than dirty underwear left out for them to smell and steal.
Easter Bunnies lay eggs filled with quantotropic matter which can assume the form of simple baubles or candies that would be pleasing to whoever opens the egg. This is a trick to win over children and gain invitation to homes. In other realms Easter Bunnies are often vicious and considered dangerous, but here in the human world their methods have been so effective that they rarely ever attack, as long as they’re left to do their business. After being exterminated from planet after planet, realm after realm, Easter Bunnies finally found a perfect ecosystem balance here on earth: We love their eggs, and they love smelling our panties.
So with their season of emergence upon us once again, remember: That shadow you could have sworn just moved in the corner of an empty room; that rattling you hear at night; that closet door left open that you could have sworn you closed; that pair of underwear you can’t find; that strange feeling that someone is watching you while you’re on the toilet… that’s an Easter Bunny.

Out of sight, out of mind. That’s the fate of global shipping, even though all of us depend on it for our daily supplies. Everything from bananas to toilet paper to iPhones travels by sea at some point. But we only pay attention when something goes wrong, whether that happens in the Red Sea, the Suez Canal—or underneath what used to be Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge. This week’s accident, which occurred when the container ship Dali lost power and headed straight into a support pillar, has delivered a reminder of the sheer overlooked scale of the shipping industry—and how unprepared many systems are to handle it.
Part of this is the massive size of today’s container vessels themselves. A few minutes before 1:30 a.m. on March 26, the Singapore-flagged container Dali issued a mayday call, which allowed construction workers on the Key Bridge to get a few cars to turn around. Down below, the Dali appeared to have engine problems; camera footage shows its lights flickering before smoke emerges and it hits the support pillar. Within seconds, the bridge collapses into the water. Some of it collapses onto the Dali, too, and with the bridge, cars plunge into the water. At the time of writing, six people are unaccounted for and presumed dead.
Now lots of ordinary citizens around the world are discovering marine websites such as vesselfinder.com and marinetraffic.com, which track merchant vessels. They will have learned that the Dali has a gross tonnage of 95,128 tons, a summer deadweight of 116,851 tons, and that it’s 300 meters (nearly 1,000 feet) long.
When it struck the Key Bridge, the Dali had 4,679 TEU (20-foot-long shipping containers) onboard and was crewed by 22 Indian seafarers, who had been joined by two pilots from Baltimore. Merchant vessels are predominantly crewed by relatively tiny staffs that are usually made up of people from India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Russia, and Eastern European countries. Indeed, it has been decades since it was common for Western Europeans and Americans to go to sea. Today’s seafarers are skilled, but they do hard and lonely work with long absences from home—and when disaster strikes, shipping can be extremely dangerous. Earlier this month, a Houthi attack in the Red Sea cost the lives of three seafarers—two Filipinos and one Vietnamese.
All this is in service of the goods that make our lives so convenient—and which require a vast and largely invisible ocean network to support.
Just consider the arrivals, off-loading, loading, and departures at the Port of Rotterdam, which is merely the world’s 10-busiest container port. Last year, Rotterdam handled 13.4 million TEU at its 14 terminals. That’s 36,712 TEU every day of the year. In the afternoon on March 26, 149 ocean-going ships were docked in Rotterdam, where cargo containers were being offloaded and new ones added. Another 132 were about to arrive, and another 161 had just departed. The expected arrivals included the Ever Living, a sister to the ill-fated Ever Given, of Suez Canal fame.
At a length of 335 meters (nearly 1,100 feet), width of 45 meters (145 feet), and with a deadweight of 104,653 tons, the Ever Living is almost as massive as the Ever Given. But only almost. With a capacity of nearly 10,000 TEU, it’s very similar to the Dali. The Ever Given, by contrast, has a capacity of just over 20,000 TEU, and it’s not even one of the world’s largest container ships.
Indeed, these days, the world’s fleet of ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs)—vessels of more than 14,500 TEU capacity—features a growing number of beasts that can transport 23,000 TEU and more. The MSC Irina, for example, can carry an astounding 24,346 TEU. Today, in fact, the Dali’s capacity of 10,000 makes it a midsize box ship. Compare that to container ships in 1972, when construction began on the Key Bridge: Back then, the largest container ship in the world had a capacity of a mere 2,984 TEU.
The shipping industry keeps making things more efficient—and thus more cost-effective and more attractive. It’s thanks to shipping that it has made so much sense to build a globalized economy: It’s so cheap to ship goods globally that people in wealthy nations can have them made elsewhere, transported across a few oceans, and still pay less than if they were made at home.
But the massive ships come with equally massive logistical demands. Ports have to be expanded to be able to receive and service them. The port service, for example, involves higher cranes with a wider reach: just imagine 24,000 containers stacked upward and sideways. The ports also need larger storage facilities to hold such vessels’ cargo until it’s picked up by trucks. The financial picture involving ULCVs is clear on the vessel-owner side, because buying a ULCV eventually pays off.
Ports are usually public-private partnerships, which means that investment often involves the taxpayer. The Port of Virginia in Norfolk, which the Dali had left just before its ill-fated call at the Port of Baltimore, has just allocated $1.4 billion to widen the port to make it accessible for two-way ULCV traffic. Norfolk is also currently being dredged to the tune of $450 million, after which it’s expected to have the deepest and widest channels on the east coast of the United States.
“This is a true advantage for anyone delivering to or from America,” said Stephen A. Edwards, the CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, in an interview with World Cargo News. “Our wider channel sets The Port of Virginia apart by allowing for consistent vessel flow, increasing berth and container yard efficiencies, and further improving harbor safety.” It’s a competitive marketplace, and lots of Chinese ports are already set up for ULCVs. Ports and countries that can’t afford ULCV-worthy expansion are out of luck.
And as the Dali has taught the world, accommodating large vessels is not just about ports. They traverse oceans, sail under bridges, and sail through canals. Imagine if the Ever Given or another ULCV were to strike a bridge. Even a sturdier bridge than the Key Bridge (which received a rating of “fair” during its most recent federal inspection) would struggle to withstand such a blow.
Such calamities happen very rarely. It would be extraordinarily expensive for cities and countries to strengthen bridges and other infrastructure that a massive container ship might hit. The Dali’s crew and pilots appear to have tried their hardest to steer the ship away from the Key Bridge when the power supply failed, and they issued a mayday call to alert authorities to the fact that the ship was approaching the bridge. This, though, is unlikely to be the last time that machines fail man.
Even as ships get bigger and bigger, with more and more sophisticated technology, the human brain and hands are an indispensable backup. Giving crews a few more tools with which to manually counteract technology may be the best way of avoiding another Key Bridge disaster.
Shipping—an industry that involves ratings, officers, stevedores, crane operators, ship managers, insurers, and many others—goes on delivering your favorite consumer goods around the clock. It remains a miracle that mishaps involving their floating fortresses occur so rarely.

Do you, or anyone actually, know where/when the '-bowl' sufix started being used in Fandom? Because I can't find any kind of origin, and surprisingly Fanlore doesn't have a article about it (as far as I checked maybe I didn't search well?). I just found and know that it's used for kinda old and relatively new fandoms, thanks to a two-year-old Reddit post.
For anyone who doesn't get/know about the '-bowl' sufix: is basically an All × One thing. For example, if you encounter 'Dekubowl' this means that Deku, the character, is shipped with everyone or that at least everyone else have a crush with Deku.
I can only think of the 'Super Bowl' (just as one comment in that Reddit post suggest) for its origin, but when we talk about Fandom culture we never know. It could have originated from anything no-related to the Super Bowl, LOL.
--
Ooh, interesting. I've never heard of this in my life, and I have no idea what a -bowl suffix is supposed to mean, even if I guess it has to do with the super bowl.
It's not surprising Fanlore doesn't have this if it's coming from BNHA or somewhere similar. Fanlore is fantastic on the history of Western "Media Fandom", zines, K/S, etc. It's much weaker in areas that OTW early adopters haven't spent as much time in.
You should write the -bowl article yourself!
--
I went into AO3's tag search and looked for 'bowl'. I found 1311 tags, 90 of them canonicals.
I'm seeing a ton of references to the Super Bowl, dust bowl AUs, pet play with pet food bowls, Dream in the fishbowl, unending uses like "I'm crying into my bowl of cereal as I write this", "bowl of honey nut feelios", "bowl of pornflakes", "me shaking the food bowl of sbi wilbur-centric angst: come get y'all's juice", etc., and plenty of references to YOI katusdon bowls. Lots of fandoms and episodes have 'bowl' in their titles.
Zeroing in on more related things, I'm seeing BNHA over and over and not much else...
EXCEPT!
Fruit bowls!
I see scattered references to "let's add him into that whole fruit bowl" and "the whole fruit bowl is here" and so on. Some of them are crack fic where everyone is a banana, but a lot of them seem to be a metaphor for "everything together".
Okay, I just spent far too much time trying to categorize tags. Out of the 'bowl' ones, about a third appear to be this kind of sense (counting by number of tags, not number of works).
Game of Thrones has a bunch, but they refer (as far as I know) to which characters will hypothetically kill each other and emerge victorious, not to group shipping.
Some tags I found, like 'edelbowl' sounded more like a group ship than an X/everyone. I also found a scattering of tags that were like 'all of them in a bowl together', which is probably related.
But mainly, what I found is that this is from BNHA and it's recent.
Tumblr media
The other fandoms where I found it were:
Demon Slayer, Dr. STONE, Naruto, South Park, Fire Emblem, Genshin, HP, Lego Ninjago, My Next Life as a Villainess, She-Ra, Teen Wolf, Tower of God, VLD, A3! (Video Game), Assassination Classroom, Avatar, Batman, Black Clover - Tabata Yuki, Bleach, Blue Lock (Manga), BTS, Bungou Stray Dogs , Dangan Ronpa, Danny Phantom, Detective Conan, Dragon Age, Durarara!!, Fate/Grand Order, How to Train Your Dragon, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Kaiju No. 8 (Manga), LEGO Monkie Kid, Osomatsu-san, Ouran High School Host Club, Percy Jackson, SK8 the Infinity, Soul Eater, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., Toilet-bound Hanako-kun, Tokyo Revengers, Virtual Streamer Animated Characters, Warcraft, Xenoblade Chronicles 2
That's giving me a very distinctive picture of a fan who's probably in their 20s or 30s, mostly like anime and some video games, and is not the type that edits Fanlore.
There's nothing actually old here: it's recent anime and stuff that is still a megafandom, like Naruto.
I'm seeing a scattering of 'dekubowl' from 2017 and then other character tags taking off in like 2019. This is definitely a recent trend in terminology, at least on AO3.

justice in bullet train would be if the producers were forced to film the entire movie in black and white so they couldn't make every single japanese thing cyberpunk neon LMFAO... and if Ladybug got smothered by momomon every time he tried to make a weird comment about zen gardens, japanese culture, or japanese toilets... bullet train is not a film set in japan-- it is a film set in the western fiction of japan!!!
furthermore it's weird bc the way the movie frames ladybugs odd comments acknowledges that ladybugs comments ARE weird, but the structure and content of the movie as a whole actually reinforces ladybug's orientalist view of japan. (samurai swords and mount fuji??) and we have lemon who is more outwardly aware of racial struggle than the other characters, and we can take solace in him as we watch the movie, but he cannot make up for the movie's lack of like, being normal about japan. i feel like on first watch i got bamboozled into thinking the movie was progressive because it has progressive characters where the movie as a whole is rather yeeaaghhhh
also how are luck and fate gonna favor ladybug in the movie (he emerges alive) when he's the orientalist white man bumbling around japan😭 (i understand he would live bc he's the protagonist, i'm examining the movie's choice to construct him so, and how it constructs everything surrounding him!!) he's like the racist who gets given good boy points because he's self aware about all the superficial things-- mansplaining for example. but maybe we can take this as another example of how western orientalist fictions of East Asia often bend the narrative around the white man. Think about Blade Runner, or Neuromancer. For a subversion of this, see the short story "Termination Stories for the Cyberpunk Dystopia Protagonist" by Isabel J. Kim in Clarkesworld.

2024 Paris Olympics: theft, technical errors and “plague letters”
The long-awaited Paris Olympics continues to upset with yet another embarrassment. Despite the huge amount of resources spent during preparations for the large-scale sporting event, thousands of people are threatening not to watch the Olympics as the slogan “Boycott the Olympics” has emerged around the world after the opening ceremony in Paris 2024 was marred by a giant scandal.
Paris cancelled a triathlete’s training session for the second day in a row
The second consecutive training swim for triathletes at the 2024 Olympics has been cancelled due to poor water quality in the Seine.
The first training swim was due to take place on the morning of July 28 and the second one on the 29th. According to the organising committee, the water quality has deteriorated due to heavy rains. Triathlon competitions are scheduled for July 30 and 31.
Earlier in July, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a swim in the Seine to prove that the capital’s river is safe for competitions. Hidalgo was in a short wetsuit and without a cap, she lowered herself into the water from a special pontoon. Before that, the area of the swim site was surveyed, two bicycles and a scooter were pulled from the bottom.
According to local media, the organisers hope that the water condition will return to normal before the competition. However, in the mayor’s office of Paris allowed that the competition may be postponed to reserve dates and even combine two days into one. Earlier it was reported that Paris spent €1.4bn on cleaning the Seine. Macron claimed that the river was safe, but never bathed in it before the start of the Olympics.
Organisers of the Games mixed up the anthem of the South Sudanese team
The debut of South Sudan’s basketball team at the Olympics started with a scandal. Before the debut match of the national team for 20 seconds switched on the anthem of Sudan, from which South Sudan gained independence in 2011. The players continued to stand with their hands clasped to their hearts and drew applause from both fans and opponents – players from the Puerto Rico national team.
Three minutes later, the correct audio track was played to the applause of the fans. At the end of the match, South Sudan won with a score of 90-79. In addition, the organisers made a number of technical errors: the Olympic flag was hung upside down at the opening ceremony and the South Korean team was announced as North Korea at the athletes’ parade in Paris.
WADA hid samples of the Ukrainian Olympic team
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, after an investigation, all samples of Ukrainian athletes taken before the Olympics have disappeared from both the storage facility and from the general database of WADA.
“Doping was found in the samples,” the BBC believes.
IOC removed video of snippets of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics
The International Olympic Committee has removed a video with key fragments of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
The opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Paris on July 26 caused a lot of negative reactions both among spectators and in the sports community. The event included an LGBT parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s work “The Last Supper,” which depicts the last meal of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. During the performance, the apostles were portrayed by drag performers.
Greek portal pronews.gr called the Last Supper parody a collapse of civilisation and Christian culture in Western Europe. The French bishopric also condemned the ceremony, saying the show contained scenes of mockery and ridicule of Christianity.
Obscene toilets at the Olympics
Organisers of the sporting event installed street toilets with “revealing” designs for fans. The main complaint from fans is that these toilets only partially conceal the person inside.
France’s interior minister got a “plague letter”
The strange appearance of the parcel prompted staff at the sorting centre to call the police. On the back of the parcel were racial and other insults against Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, Le Figaro reports.
Upon inspection, the police found black powder in the parcel. The powder was tested by the police’s nuclear, radiological, biological, chemical and explosives unit.
The powder eventually tested positive for plague, a potentially very dangerous disease. New analyses conducted by the Pasteur Institute are underway. The results will be known this Monday.
Qatari Emir’s daughter-in-law was robbed in France: 11 Hermès handbags stolen
The daughter-in-law of Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani had her personal luggage, containing 11 Hermès bags, stolen aboard a high-speed train from Nice to Paris on her way to the Olympics, Le Parisien reports.
Accompanied by her domestic servant, the daughter-in-law of the Emir of Qatar boarded the high-speed train at Cannes station this Saturday, July 27. The train, travelling from Nice, was due to reach Paris’ Gare de Lyon. Between 12:00 and 01:40 p.m., she noticed that 11 bags of luxury brand Hermès had been stolen.
According to the French publication, an investigation has been launched into the incident. Currently, the bags and those who stole them have not been found.
First lady Jill Biden praises Paris Olympics opening ceremony
While Olympic organisers are panicking as the blasphemy row grows, US First Lady Jill Biden is overwhelmed by the Olympics opening show in Paris. And she has no idea how it could ever be surpassed. She said in a statement:
“So, last night, it was just spectacular. The rain did not dampen our spirits…. Every step of the way, I was thinking to myself, oh my god, oh my god. How are we going to top this?”

Ilta-Sanomat writes (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that Turkey's change of heart concerning Finland's application to join the western alliance is the result of a tough behind-the-scenes game in which the United States has offered both a carrot and a stick.
Finland's President Sauli Niinistö begins a two-day visit to Turkey on Thursday. It is widely expected that on Friday Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will announce the country's approval of Finland's Nato membership bid.
Risto E. J. Penttilä, the director of the think tank Nordic West Office, told Ilta-Sanomat that he believes that the US has been the driving force in recent developments concerning Finnish Nato membership, having made it clear to Turkey that the delay must end.
Penttilä says that US President Joe Biden and his administration have worked behind the scenes to promote the membership of both Finland and Sweden.
"I wouldn't be surprised if we hear news about F-16 fighter jet purchases [by Turkey] soon," he told Ilta-Sanomat.
President Niinistö visited the US last week where he met President Biden in Washington, even though the original programme did not include talks between the two. Penttilä took this as a sign that matters had moved forward significantly.
According to Penttilä, Turkey is ultimately dependent on the United States. It needs both military and economic cooperation with the US.
He noted, though, that Finland itself has done well in handling negotiations with Ankara. At no point, he said, has Turkey been able to say that Finland is a problem.
Just three years ago
Although it may already seem like the distant past, it was only three years ago as of Thursday that a state of emergency was declared in Finland in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Iltalehti reminds readers (siirryt toiseen palveluun).
Because of the Covid pandemic, Finland was in state of emergency from 16 March to 16 June 2020, and again from 1 March to 27 April 2021.
The paper recalls how initially people rushed to stockpile dairy products and toilet paper.
As the state of emergency was announced, Prime Minister Sanna Marin (SDP) and Minister of Family Affairs and Social Services Krista Kiuru (SDP) held a press conference to reassure people that they could still safely go outdoors.
The capital and surrounding province of Uusimaa were cordoned off from the rest of the country on 28 March of 2020. The police and defense forces cut off all major roads, restricting travel in and out of the province.
Face masks caused public debate from the very beginning. At first, stocks were distributed only to healthcare staff. It was not until August 2020, that the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare THL issued a recommendation on the use of masks by the general public.
The paper notes that in the early stages the Covid pandemic also sparked measures that now seem excessive, such as an order for all people over the age of 70 to quarantine.
Cleaners' strike
Most papers, including Hufvudstadsbladet (siirryt toiseen palveluun), report the Thursday start of a strike by cleaning and real estate maintenance personal after the service union PAM rejected a mediation offer in a contract dispute Wednesday.
The strike includes 2,500 employees who work in cleaning services at around a hundred companies. These include VR's trains, Helsinki's Olympic and Katajanokka terminals, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, several hotels and a long list of industrial properties around the country, all of which will be without cleaning services for three days.
This strike ends on 18 March, but the union has issued warnings of two more strike actions if no settlement is reached. Up to 25,000 union members could walk off the job later this month.
Cold keeping birds at bay
Very few spring migratory birds have returned to Finland over the past few weeks, according to the group BirdLife Finland.
The farmers' union paper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus (siirryt toiseen palveluun) points out that freezing temperatures and cold northerly winds have largely delayed migrations.
However, the forest soundscape already does include the songs of titmice, Eurasian treecreepers and greenfinches, as well as the drumming of woodpeckers.
According to BirdLife Finland, there are a few early returnees. More than 20 skylarks were seen in Turku last week, and in the past couple of weeks more than 70 skylark sightings were reported in the coastal municipalities between Pori and Porvoo.
The most unusual sighting of March so far was made on Monday of last week, when two little auk (Alle alle) were seen in Imatra.

Anime NYC 2022 - New York Be Back, Y’All~
Tumblr media
What a return. What. A. Full-fledged. Return.
After last year’s chaotic line mess, Anime NYC returned with a new panel queue system and revamped health check. This year's event was a possible glimpse of a full-on NYC anime convention would be like, post-pandemic emergency times. They were front-loaded with guests from top to bottom - one of which was the creator of Attack on Titan, Hajime Isayama.
While it’s impossible to check out everything, I had a fun time.
Friday was somewhat chill as I got to avoid the line for regular pass holders. It sounded like a bit of a mess from what I heard, but things apparently got better as the day went on. After the Press check-in, I went up to check out the riichi mahjong gaming area held by Riichi Nomi NYC and bought a lanyard from them that matched my now-mahjong state of mind. I did play with the group for a little bit before heading down to the Exhibit Hall.
Tumblr media
At the Exhibit Hall, I bought some manga from Denpa Books and checked out their panel. What’s nice this year about the Denpa panel was the promotion of the BL imprint, KUMA. So not only it was Ed Chavez of Denpa fame talking, but also Andrea Donohue, the head of KUMA, who promoted a good amount of BL titles that I actually want to take an interest in. Especially a title called Crappy Happy Life because a gag BL manga is something I would eat up in a hurry. Ed would then talk about current and upcoming Denpa releases like the final volume of Inside Mari, the first volume of Under Ninja, TabeGirl: The Art of JUN, and the first volume of March Comes in Like a Lion. What really impressed me the most is the community that supports Denpa and I noticed how excited fans at the panel were about their books. There’s something else that happened there that I want to talk about, but that will be the main topic of a later post.
I also checked out the return of Anime for Humanity, the anime-centered mental health NPO that I volunteered for back in 2019. They got a booth this year and were still giving out Anime Therapy Kits. I caught up with the main guy I worked with there and talked about many things, anime and manga-related. I would see them through the whole weekend and donated to them as well. It was good to see AFH back.
After that, I just straight up left the convention because I wanted to go home and get my Kaname Date (AI: The Somnium Files, a game franchise which I wrote about) cosplay ready for Saturday and Sunday. While the Exhibitors’ Hall was packed, I never felt that it was congested as in years past.
Anyway, on to Saturday, busy, busy day. I went to my first ever Yen Press panel! It was nice to see the a good sized crowd show up and even writer TurtleMe (of The Beginning of the End fame) stopped by to talk about himself for a bit. There’s way too many books Yen Press announced and I won’t mention them all here. But Yen Press did mention an upcoming Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun box set and they licensed the Elden Ring gag manga that I heard about, so now I’m intrigued. I also wish them luck for their print release of Oshi no Ko.
Tumblr media
I later checked out a Yakuza/Like a Dragon/Ryu ga Gotoku Studio meetup and it continues to amaze me to see how much the franchise has blown up since 2017. As a fan of the franchise before it became mainstream, I think Westerners like myself are super-spoiled with what’s to come. I don’t think it’s a bad thing because I think everyone should play RGG Studio games.
Tumblr media
I next went to the Dark Horse Manga Panel. And they really did not disappoint. The big news was that Innocent by Shin’ichi Sakamoto is coming to the U.S. around Fall 2023. I would have never foreseen the day that this work would get licensed here. There’s a really good video of Sakomoto and his thought process on Archipel. He has made an emphasis on promoting about the value of manga despite Japanese readers treating it as “one and done” most of the time. Also, Carl Horn (who I love hearing talk about comics) mentioned how much manga has made a significant impact in America. He talked about how he brought a group of Japanese manga editors to a Barnes & Noble bookstore one time to check out its manga section. The editors were amazed that manga had its own unique section in a store that’s known for Western-centered material. It’s funny because a month ago, a friend and I were at a Barnes & Noble checking out the huge manga shelves on display. We had a conversation about how different it was back in 2009-2010 for manga fans like us in terms of promotion (Spoiler: it was dark times). To see how far we’ve come, it’s a bit surreal. We don’t get every manga licensed, but damn, the Americans who appreciate manga and work in promoting it know how to give the titles we do get the spotlight they deserve.
I also won a free NieR: Automata artbook at the panel too! I was the 1st winner out of 6!
I would later take part in a Zero Escape/AI: The Somnium Files meetup. There weren’t many people sadly including myself, but we all made the most of it. I was also amazed at the amount of people who recognized me as Date at the con. I’m so glad that there were fans who have played the Somnium Files games and I will always recommend the franchise whenever the games are on sale.
I did find out what happened in the Hajime Isayama panel that I didn’t get into. I heard that fans at the panel had a positive reception to Isayama ending Attack on Titan the way he did and that their reaction almost made him cry. Isayama wrote a message on Kodansha’s website prior to the event saying he knew the ending was controversial and that people should be kind to him. I wish he didn’t had to write that because the internet isn’t always real life despite what social media says otherwise. But I do get that for every few positive comments that get you hyped, there’s always that one nagging negative comment that overshadows all the positive ones. I’m glad that Isayama got a chance to meet people from the one country that really ate Attack on Titan up when it became mainstream.
Finally, as I left for the day, Saturday night was banging with DJs blasting hip-hop and fans dancing in front of the main exhibit hall entrance. I even recorded a video looking from above and it was, as the kids say, lit.
Tumblr media
So onto Sunday. I went up to where the Community Stage was for the “Defending Manga” panel hosted by the brain behind Manga in Libraries, Jillian Rudes (who I finally got a chance to talk to in person at the Dark Horse panel). Unfortunately, it got canceled. I was really looking forward to seeing it too. It’s possible that someone might have gotten sick and given that COVID/RSV/cold/flu cases in the U.S. have gone up the last few weeks, it’s understandable to not let something spread at the con. I gave up on going to the Kodansha USA panel due to mental exhaustion, though I did hear what they announced and Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen, The Darwin Incident (I’m interested in this one the most), My Lovesick Life As a ‘90s Otaku, Limbo the King, a Magic Knight Rayearth paperback release and an upcoming Blue Period box-set stand out to me.
So I just decided to play mahjong with the Riichi Nomi NYC gang. Originally formed in 2020 by a small group of passionate New Yorkers interested in riichi mahjong, they have become a juggernaut in the North American riichi mahjong scene. Ever since I became a part of the club in the summer of 2021, Riichi Nomi NYC has gone from doing organized meetups to hosting multiple tournaments at their leader’s apartment and running a huge 2-day tournament of 70+ players in NYC in July 2022. They also made their anime convention debuts in 2022 at Anime Boston and Otakon with huge positive reception by both convention fans and staff. I felt that Anime NYC would be the perfect way to end the year for Riichi Nomi NYC and the culmination of all their 2022 success. This was the also the first time Anime NYC ever officially had mahjong in all of its 5 years of existence.
Riichi Nomi NYC absolutely killed it. They ran a 12-person tournament on Friday and a 16-person tournament on Saturday with little-to-no problems all while teaching newcomers and selling great merchandise. The gang did an excellent job in ensuring beginners weren’t frightened and that players already skilled in the game had a great time. I got a chance to play with 2 Cantonese-speaking players and I got a chance to show off my Cantonese outside of talking to family. We all felt a sense of communal/cultural pride that was wonderful and only something I could experience via mahjong, so huge props right there. I’m so proud of what Riichi Nomi NYC has accomplished and I’m looking forward to see what they do next year!
I finally went to Artists’ Alley and got some Spy x Family and Chainsaw Man goodies. The crowd over there wasn’t super-packed like last year’s. I also got a chance to check out the big Hajime Isayama “Thank You” message wall at Kodansha’s booth and I wrote something too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, I thought Anime NYC was fine for the most part. They really addressed the line problems last year to check-in at the con and for panels. The staff enforced an attendance cap for all 3 days and it showed. With only 4,500 3-Day passes sold, it wasn’t crowded to the point of being super-congested. I got to walk around crowds with little to no problems. I also liked how bag checks were replaced with walkthrough scanners unlike in previous years. Mask enforcement was hit and miss for the most part, but I felt comfortable because I wore a KN95 mask the whole time I was there, kept to myself a bunch, and was in parts of the convention center that were well-ventilated. I think the last part is key here because I honestly think great indoor ventilation on par with outdoor air levels makes going mask-less bearable in my opinion. Let’s not have the Anime Expo 2022 Artist Alley mess here.
I do notice that the Anime NYC panel lottery now makes panel hopping not as hyped as before. I know people sneaking into the biggest and coolest panels even when they were jam-packed was a thing and it was great. Those days might be over for the most part. But I do wonder about the after-effect since lines for other panels might become jam-packed as fans want to see what other options are there. However, I haven’t heard anything of that sort at all. I might be talking out of my butt here. I think the Community Stage helps to alleviate concerns and having panels there is refreshing. They provide a more fan-perspective view that’s needed and is sometimes missing in a industry-focused con such as Anime NYC.
I’m also now curious about Anime NYC’s continued co-existence with New York Comic-Con. This year’s NYCC gave a huge spotlight to anime and manga - arguably the best ever. VIZ Media did show up at Anime NYC, but there were really no manga promotions from them. Those seemed to be now saved for New York Comic-Con. I don’t think NYCC will supplant Anime NYC with regards to anime-related experiences, but I will admit that there’s things about NYCC on the manga side of things I want to check out now compared to Anime NYC.
Yet I will say, after cosplaying as Kaname Date, I still think Anime NYC is a good spot for underrepresented Japanese-related series. I found a small group of fans for AI: The Somnium Files (which wasn’t a hugely marketed franchise) somehow. Anime NYC still has some issues, but for me, it was worth going. The experience I had this year was far better than last year’s and this was due to all of the various people I connected with and the friends I already made who showed up.
So much love to the Anime NYC staff and here’s to 2023!
Tumblr media
I will have a follow-up post (if anyone is interested) about a fan Q&A moment at the con that made think and reflect, so that will be up soon.

Sir Flars, could you tell us a bit more about your bestseller? What was your inspiration?
Eu de Peo has become one of the best-selling perfumes worldwide. It all started when I was feeling completely unmotivated and clueless about my life. I decided to go on an inspiration trip to India with my life coach, Harsha. At that time, my main activities were binge-watching random cat videos on YouTube and eating tostis.
But Harsha turned my life around. He told me that to reach nirvana, I had to follow the divine guidance of God Shivansh, which quite frankly, was to eat food prepared by someone using their feet and nails as knives(can still remember the ingrown toenail). I remember enduring an intense and terrible diarrhea . I couldn't stop, and let’s just say, I needed a cork in my butt.
When I finally emerged from the toilet, Harsha said, (listen to the audio attached to hear Harsha's words)' and that’s when the idea hit me—farts trapped in a jar! Believe it or not, it’s now a must-have in India. So, a huge thank you to Harsha. My beloved Harsha. What would be the equivalent smell in the Western world? Probably like a bunch of rotten eggs.

Japan issues first-ever 'megaquake' advisory, leaving citizens scared, confused

Japan issues first-ever 'megaquake' advisory, leaving citizens scared, confused
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Japan, one of the most earthquake-prone nations on earth, issued its first-ever “megaquake advisory” last week after a powerful quake struck off the southeastern coast of the southern main island of Kyushu. The magnitude 7.1 quake caused no deaths or severe damage but the advisory has led to widespread confusion and a lingering sense of worry — in a country well accustomed to regular quakes — about when the next big one will hit.The Associated Press explains what the advisory means, what people are being told to do, and what could happen if a massive quake hits Japan.7.1 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES OFF JAPAN’S COAST, TSUNAMI ADVISORY ISSUEDThe Japan Meteorological Agency issued the advisory after concluding that the magnitude 7.1 quake that struck on Aug. 8 on the western edge of the Nankai Trough increased the likelihood of another big one. There is a 70-80% chance of a magnitude 8 or 9 quake associated with the Nankai Trough within the next 30 years, and the probability is now “higher than normal” after the latest quake, the JMA says. But that is not a prediction that a megaquake will happen at any specific time or location, says University of Tokyo seismologist Naoshi Hirata, who heads the JMA’s experts panel. He urged people to remain cautious and prepared. The Nankai Trough is an undersea trench that runs from Hyuganada, in the waters just off the southeastern coast of Kyushu, to Suruga Bay in central Japan. It spans about 500 miles along the Pacific coast. The Philippine Sea Plate there slowly pulls down on the Eurasian Plate and causes it to occasionally snap back, an action that could lead to a megaquake and tsunami, JMA says. The last Nankai Trough quake off Shikoku in 1946 recorded a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 and killed more than 1,300 people. In 2013, a government disaster prevention team said a magnitude 9.1 Nankai Trough quake could generate a tsunami exceeding 33 feet within minutes, killing as many as 323,000 people, destroying more than 2 million buildings and causing economic damage of more than $1.5 trillion to large swaths of Japan’s Pacific coast. As a result of the “megaquake advisory,” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida canceled his planned Aug. 9-12 trip to Central Asia and announced he would lead the government response and ensure preventive measures and communication with the public. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency instructed 707 municipalities seen as at risk from a Nankai Trough quake to review their response measures and evacuation plans.Experts and officials have urged people to stay calm and carry on their daily social and economic activities while also securing emergency food and water and discussing evacuation plans with family members. In a reassuring note on Monday, JMA experts said they have so far found no abnormal seismic or tectonic activity that would indicate a megaquake. The “megaquake advisory,” which is filled with scientific jargon, has worried and baffled people across the country. Some towns closed beaches and canceled annual events, which has led to challenges for travelers during Japan’s Obon holiday week, a time for festivals and fireworks across the nation. Many people have put off planned trips and rushed to stock up on rice, dried noodles, canned food, bottled water, portable toilets and other emergency goods, leaving shelves empty at many supermarkets in western Japan and Tokyo, even though the capital is outside the at-risk area. The Summit supermarket chain said microwavable rice is in short supply and the store is limiting purchases to one pack per customer.Yoshiko Kudo and her husband Shinya said they had trouble understanding what exactly the advisory meant, how worried they should be and what they should do.”We are trying not to go overboard. Too much worry is not good,” Yoshiko Kudo said.”We don’t know how to be prepared and to still live normally like the experts tell us,” said Shinya Kudo, a caregiver in his 60s.Yoneko Oshima, walking by a major train station in Tokyo, said: “It’s scary … They say there’s a (70-80%) chance in the next 30 years, but it could be tomorrow.” Her latest purchase is a portable toilet. She says water is indispensable for her diabetic husband, who needs to take medicine after every meal.”I plan to take this opportunity to make a list and make sure we have everything at hand,” Oshima said. She hasn’t changed her holiday plans this week, but her daughter canceled a planned trip to Mount Fuji.In Matsuyama city on the island of Shikoku, which has many hot springs, hotels and resorts reviewed their evacuation procedures and emergency equipment and launched a radio communication system for emergency use. They have received hundreds of cancelations since the advisory was issued, said Hideki Ochi, director of the Dogo Onsen Ryokan Association.Rail companies serving the region said their trains are operating at slightly reduced speeds as a precaution.A crisis management task force in the coastal town of Kuroshio in Kochi prefecture, where a tsunami as high as 111 feet was predicted in the government risk analysis, initially set up 30 shelters across town. But only two are still open following Monday’s JMA statement that there has been no indication of an impending megaquake.Higashi Osaka urged residents on the town website not to engage in “unnecessary and non-urgent” travel in case of a major quake. The popular seaside town of Shirahama in Wakayama prefecture said its four outdoor hot springs, parks and other facilities would be closed for a week. Saturday’s annual fireworks festival was also canceled.

Alfea redesign based on the Dark Academia direction taken by netflix:
Alfea:
Mostly girl-only school
The building would be U-shaped with a standing square in the middle, slightly narrower at the front than the back. The back of the building faces North. The empty space of the U would have a wide cobblestone path leading from the entrence door to the door of the back building. A mixture of grasses and mosses cover the rest, while the path is lined with an alternance of birch and linden trees. Near the back building, there are some dogroses growing. It has nine floating buildings orbiting around it, serving as classrooms.
The entrence building is small, and doesn't close the U, the gates do, which are just hedges of dogroses. The entrance building contains two small storage spaces, usually a temporary spot for food deliveries or consumable goods of little value such as erasers or cleaning supplies. It's second story is used for two offices: the two offices of the direction. It's attic is only used for storage of goods that aren't needed often, usually expedition equipment.
The main buildings are all stuck together forming the U: two octogonal towers with four floors (ground floor, first, floor, second floor, third floor, forth floor) plus the roof, at the back two round, larger towers at the same height. The octogonal towers are connected to the round towers by two lateral building, one on each side, with two floors (ground floor, first floor, second floor) with the roofs. The back building is three floors tall (ground floor, first floor, second floor, third floor).
All Alfea's buildings are a soft pink (plastered and painted) with green roofs (the tiles themselves are this color), with tiles forming a diamond pattern. The window decorations and exterior shutters are either white or the same color as the roofs. The decorations are mostly comprised of swirls and sea-shell patterns.
In in one of the octogonal towers, it would have a room dedicated to fungiculture. This is a vestige of when the school was under attack by the Three Ancestral Witches and their armies, allowing to produce some fresh food. The other ground floor of the other octogonal tower would have the kitchen. The ground floor of the back building would have the grand hall (the entire length of the back building), minus the width of the corridor, the estern side building would have a librarie, a toilet rooms and a music room, while the other side buildings would have two class rooms, with a corridor. The West side building would have two class rooms. The ground floor of the Eastern round tower would have the staff room, with the western one having the second bathroom.
The undergrounds of the school have: secret librarie, archives, fungiculture, cold room for food storage and emergency bunkers.
On the first floor of the back building, two class rooms, a corridor, and two tiny bathrooms. The West side building has the infirmary and two classrooms, while the other side building has three classrooms. Each of the towers accomodate a student dormatory for 5 to six students (although the personal space is very limited, with bunk beds with curtains), each of them with: a varenda surroundint the entire story, a bathroom, three rooms for sleeping and a common room, plus the stare case. The common rooms are equipped with study desks, an electric lunchbox, a small cubbard and a kettle.
The second floor prioritises education, with 3 dorms, 8 classrooms (some corridors for connections of course) and 1 bathroom in the octogonal tower.
The third floor has four small classrooms in the back building, two larger ones, one in each round tower, and two dorms in the octogonal towers.
On the forth floor of the towers, there are only doorms.
The interior design focuses on beige walls with white ornements and wooden floor boards or sometimes hexagonal terracotta tiles.
The atticks of the main buildings mostly serve as storage, although one the one of the West side building was converted, half into a dorm, and half into a "tea/bath room".

a 1545 anti-papal woodcut depicting German peasants mockingly farting in Pope Paul III's direction. Produced by Lucas Cranach, commissioned by Martin Luther. (x)
The mines of Mansfeld may help explain another of Luther's conspicuous traits — his scatology. His relish for obscenity and toilet language would prove embarrassing to not just contemporary supporters but also generations of Protestants. In his tracts and Table Talk, references to the Word of God and love of Christ appear alongside mentions of farting and belching, asses and excrement. "I have shit in the pants, and you can hang them around your neck and wipe your mouth with it," he said at the table one day. (In many Table Talk editions, such comments are either cleaned up or excised.) Mansfelders, operating in a harsh and unforgiving environment, were known for their crude, blunt language. Luther moreover lived at a time when people were less squeamish about their bodily functions than they are today — when people defecated on roadsides and emptied chamber pots into the street. The fastidious Erasmus was a rare exception. A son of the emerging middle class, he had modern ideas about hygiene, and throughout his life he would wage a lonely battle against the muck and grime of his age.
